EEOC to Participate in Live Twitter Chat Equal Pay Day Tuesday

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) will participate in a “Tweet Chat” on Tuesday, April 9 from 1-2 p.m. ET to discuss the pay gap between women and men. The Equal Pay Tweetchat, using the hashtag #talkpay, is sponsored by the National Women’s Law Center, with these distinguished guests:

· U.S. EEOC Chair Jacqueline Berrien

· Jocelyn Samuels, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Civil Rights Division, U.S. Department of Justice

· U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (MD)

· Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3)

During the chat, EEOC, along with other organizations, will answer questions on the issue of pay discrimination using its Twitter handle @EEOCNews.

The EEOC seeks to heighten awareness of gender-based wage discrimination on Equal Pay Day, which is held annually in April to signify the point in the year that a woman must work to earn what a man made the previous year. According to the most recent data, women earn only 77 percent of what men earn in a full-time annual salary.

The EEOC has been at the forefront of the federal government’s effort to secure equal pay for women. As part of the National Equal Pay Enforcement Task Force created by President Obama, the Commission has undertaken important efforts to raise awareness and strengthen enforcement of wage discrimination laws. The 50^th Anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, enforced by the EEOC, will be commemorated this June.

Dress for Success provides professional wear for women looking for work or are in the workplace. A woman can get two outfits; one for a job interview and the other to wear to work. In fact, visit the site to find out where you can donate a suit.
Women's Sports Foundation helps promote physical and sports activities awareness to girls and women. This is a great site
Kickstarter allows you to post your creative venture idea online in hopes of getting financial supporters to make it a dream come true. There are different categories available. Be sure to take a look, and be inspired to create or back an idea financially. No backing is too small.
International Museum of Women: An online museum that curates via multimedia arts, stories and ideas of women globally. There are also real live events as well. Be sure to visit it for a little taste of the cultural arts.
Women for Women: This organization works with women who are from war torn countries. Women are given opportunities to learn new skills and training, in hopes of rebuilding their lives with stability through work.

Recipe: Minestrone Soup

A bowl of soup goes a long way during winter. A bowl of soup warms up the heart and soul. My hubby asked me to make his favorite soup: Minestrone, especially if I can get it close to the Olive Garden version. Not sure what goes in the soup, I did see this tasty recipe the Olive Garden Minestrone Soup. My recipe is an adapted version of this soup because who has every single ingredient available in their home? For sure not my home.

Prep: 15 min. (I like to prepare the ingredients before actually cooking.

Cook: 50 min., depending on consistency

Servings: 6-8

Ingredients

2-4 T Olive Oil (we are usually generous)
2 c of seasoned hamburger
1/2 c minced onion
1/4 c chopped zucchini
1/4 c green beans
2 tsp minced garlic
4 cups of Swanson chicken broth low sodium
1 can red kidney beans, drained
1 can black beans, drained
1/2 can diced tomatoes, drained
1/2 cup chopped carrots
2 T dried parsley
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp of sea salt
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 dried basil
1 1/2 cup of boiling water
1 cup of shell pasta

Directions:

Heat the olive oil in a pot. Saute the onions, carrots, zucchini, green beans, garlic, and the seasoned hamburger for about 5 minutes. Add the Chicken broth, drained tomatoes, beans, spices and hot water. Bring soup to a boil.

Once boiled, simmer for 25 minutes, with lid on top of pot. Add pasta, and continue to simmer for 20 minutes or until desired consistency.

Let me just say my hubby and son loved the soup. My 9 year old son loved the veggies in the soup! I am so excited. My hubby isn't the only one who can cook around here. ;)

As we say in Arabic: "Sahtain" (Bon Appetit).

Recipe: Broiled Chicken with Spiced Vegetables topped with Mozzarella Cheese

When Hubster is in the mood for cooking, it really shows in the dishes he prepares. One: he comes up with his own combination of prepared meals, and Two: it becomes an artistic venue for him.

On this cold, wintry day, Hubster came up with this fabulous, healthy, delicious dish.I present to you the Broiled Chicken with Spiced Vegetables topped with Mozzarella Cheese.
Prep time: 5-10 minutes
Cooking time: 45 minutes
Servings: 2

Ingredients:

2 pieces of boneless chicken breasts, thawed
2-4 pieces of fresh mozzarella cheese
2 cups of cut carrots
1 medium size zucchini
2 medium size tomatoes
1 cup of fresh mushrooms
1 1/2 tsp of mixed spices: turmeric, curry, chili powder, paprika, saffron,dried garlic, and lemmon pepper
1/2 tsp of dried basil
a pinch of sea salt (optional, for taste)

Mix all veggies together with olive oil in pan on medium heat for about 5 minutes. Then add the chicken on top of the veggie mixture. Cover the pan, allow cooking for 15 minutes on medium heat. Put the veggie mixture in an oven pan, and place the chicken pieces on top of the mixture.

Place the pan in the oven, and broil for 20 minutes. Be sure to flip the pieces of chicken halfway through broiling. Put the chicken aside, to place fresh mozzarella on the veggie mixture. Broil in the oven 1-2 minutes.

Be sure to serve on plates, and as we say in Arabic: Sahtain (Bon Appetit in French).

Look at the mozzarella cheese! Yumm...

It is so delicious! You will be wanting seconds.

Roasted Almonds and Walnuts Recipe

On his day off, Hubster likes to mess around in the kitchen, especially on cold, winter days. He decides to come up with his own recipe of Roasted Almonds and Walnuts. Yes, I have permission to post this delicious and warm snack on our blog!

So without further delay, I present to you the recipe! As we say in Arabic, Sahtain (many know the French version Bon Appetit).

Ingredients:

You can determine how the size of the portions.

Raw Almonds
Walnuts
Spices such as Saffron, Cinnamon, Chili Powder, Black Pepper, and Sea Salt

Put the Almonds and the Walnuts in the pan on low heat. Put about 2-3 ounces of water over the nuts. Add each of the spice listed above one at a time. Do NOT forget the Saffron because that is what makes it special. Keep stirring the ingredients. Cover for one minute to be sure the spices are soaked into the Almonds and Walnuts.

Be sure to uncover after one minute, and roast for another five minutes and don't forget to stir in between. Total time roasting: 10 minutes.

Did I mention that Hubster loves Dates? (In fact, we've always made sure Dates were available in our household).

Hubster made me Cinnamon Tea as well.

Hubster said this image reminded him of his childhood, sitting at the beach, watching the waves and the boatings, while snacking on dates, and drinking tea.

Sportsboy, my 9 year old, designed this plate. He put his artistic touch to make a pattern, which turned out to look like a flower.

I gave my Nikon to Sportsboy to practice taking photos. This is what he came up with. I think it is hilarious.

If you live in or near cities such as Denver, Chicago, Charleston, Ann Arbor and San Diego, you have access to great food for less, too. A quick Google search should educate you on the timeframe and participating restaurants in your area.

2. Get Rewarded for Research
By now you know to never enter a new restaurant without first reading reviews. Sites like Yelp.com dominate restaurant review resources, but sometimes you can also find a voucher for additional savings. This is especially true for new restaurants hoping to build a customer base.

3. Facebook It
Social media enables you to get personalized recommendations from people you trust the most -- your family and friends! Before trying a new restaurant or selecting one in your city, ask friends for advice. You may discover a new favorite spot or know to avoid an over-hyped establishment.

4. Use Tech to Save

Innovations in online shopping have made the Internet an increasingly popular outlet for fashion. From technology that promises the perfect fit to widgets that allow you to discuss your potential purchase with friends, virtual clothes shopping is on the rise.

With e-retail spending projected to increase 62 percent by 2016, it's no wonder this trend is on an upward trajectory. However, anyone who's shopped for clothes online knows the defeat of getting the wrong size, or discovering a store's version of bordeaux is actually fuschia. As a fashion-obsessed online shopper, I've had my share of both failure and success. That's why I've compiled these do's and don'ts to make your next online experience a positive one.

DO Know Your Budget
When shopping online, inventory from nearly any merchant is at your fingertips, presenting both an exciting and perilous opportunity. Before perusing your favorite retailers' offerings, determine a spending threshold so you don't tempt yourself with items priced beyond your budget. As you browse for coveted items, remember taxes and shipping fees will add to the price of your selection.

DON'T Forego Making a List
Be a proactive online shopper and take stock of your closet to determine key items you need. It's easy to get distracted by the full-price "new arrivals" and the super-cheap "final sale" offerings, and a list will help you stay focused. Be wary of high-priced trends and spend the most money on classic pieces that transition well through the seasons. Consult Glamour.com for 10 items every woman should have in her closet, then shop (and spend) accordingly.

DO Find a Coupon Code
Before you hit up your favorite fashion sites, look for promo codes to determine which site has the best deals. Some retailers such as Kohl's allow you to use more than one code, so make sure you know these details before checking out. You can find coupons and free shipping deals for Kohl's and other retailers from sites such as FreeShipping.org.

DON'T Buy at First Sight
I rarely buy an item the first time I see it online. That's because I know every "new arrival" will eventually go on sale when it becomes old news. When you find a full-price item you love, bookmark it and monitor the cost over the next few weeks. Though waiting is the hardest part, I saved $50 on a pair of wine-colored skinny jeans by holding out for a 50-percent off sale.

DO Read the Return Policy
It's important to know the details of online return policies since you may be responsible for return shipping if the item doesn't work out. Check here for a list of stores that offer free return shipping, and remember most retailers will cover the cost if you're simply exchanging the item for a different size or color. Some big retailers allow you to return a garment to their local store, so know your options before you click "purchase."

DON'T Spend More for Free Shipping
While free shipping promotions seem pretty commonplace these days, most retailers have minimum order requirements. If you don't want to spend more than $50, adding a bunch of items to your cart to qualify for the free shipping threshold of $75 doesn't make sense. You're essentially paying an extra $25 for "free" shipping and loading up on items you wouldn't otherwise buy. Bad idea!

DO Read Reviews
Online reviews aren't just for electronics and Amazon users. Most fashion retailers enable customers to review clothes they've purchased, and these insights are extremely helpful for potential buyers. In some cases, reviewers will let you know if an item runs small or big, or if there are style defects that aren't obvious on screen.

DON'T Skip the Sizing Chart
Despite the potential of TrueFit, ordering clothes online can be daunting if you're not familiar with the retailer and their sizing standards. Study the charts offered for each garment and take the time to measure yourself as suggested by the retailer. Doing so will reduce the likelihood you'll need to return something because it doesn't fit.

DO Sign Up for Savings
Regardless of whether you're shopping online or offline, it's important to know the best time to score a good deal. Sign up for your favorite e-retailers' newsletters and deal alerts so you know when sales are happening. Set up a separate email account for these notifications to keep your personal inbox from being inundated with marketing messages. The sense of urgency created in these notifications often inflates the value of the deal, so remember to practice restraint.

DON'T Go Crazy with Store Cards
Store credit cards can be tempting, as most of them boast free or reduced shipping costs and other perks for online orders. However, these cards carry high interest rates and can negatively impact your credit score. If you have good credit and shop at the store frequently, getting a store card might be a good savings strategy. Strict management of my Limited Couture Card enables me to enjoy the free shipping perk without racking up debt.
