Sugar beet is such a feature of Norfolk farming that one may
take it for granted. One expects to get stuck behind those lorries and to see
the plume of steam above the Cantley factory. We are always hearing of new pests
and diseases and of the wrong sort of weather for the crop, and we don’t notice
that these headlines are interspersed with record-breaking sugar beet harvests.
