This particular Kindle collection consists primarily of the landmark articles written by members of the Behavioral Science Units, National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, at the FBI Academy.

These seminal publications in the history of FBI profiling were released by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of the information on serial killers provided by the FBI's Training Division.

Consultant psychologist Dr Craig Jackson has reignited the debate over the utility and effectiveness of criminal profiling.

Jackson argues that criminal profiling is unscientific and potentially harmful adding that "Behavioural profiling has never led to the direct apprehension of a serial killer or murderer, so it seems to have no real-world value." Dr. Jackson's views have received considerable press coverage (see following links).

To be honest, there is nothing new in this type of criticism, particularly of the criminal profiling methodology developed by the FBI. In 2007 Malcolm Gladwell wrote a provocative article on criminal profiling entitled "Dangerous Minds" that appeared in the New Yorker. The article documents the historical roots of criminal profiling, beginning with the pioneering work of psychiatrist James Brussel and how the work of Brussel influenced FBI profiling. The article then presents a critical review of the work of prominent FBI profilers such as John Douglas; a review that clearly questions the usefulness of criminal profiling as an investigative methodology.

In the early 1970s, Special Agent Howard Teten and others in the FBI began to apply the insights of psychological science to violent criminal behavior. In 1972, the FBI Academy launched a Behavioral Science Unit—later called the Behavioral Analysis Unit—which began looking for patterns in the behavior of serial rapists and killers. Agents John Douglas and Robert Ressler conducted systematic interviews of serial killers like John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer to gain insight into their modus operandi, motivations, and backgrounds. This collected information helped agents draw up profiles of violent criminals eluding law enforcement.

By the 1980s, the concept of criminal investigative analysis was maturing into a full-fledged investigative tool for identifying criminals and their future actions by studying their behaviors, personalities, and physical traits. Accordingly, in July 1984, the Bureau opened the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) on the campus of the FBI Academy to provide sophisticated criminal profiling services to state and local police for the first time.

The Forensic Panel is the premier forensic science practice in the United States. They consult on psychiatry and behavioral sciences, neuropsychology, pathology, toxicology, neuroradiology, medicine and emergency medicine issues in civil and criminal courts.

The Forensic Panel offers internships in the forensic behavioral sciences to undergraduate and graduate students. Each position represents a unique opportunity to advance your knowledge and skills in a closely managed environment where you learn real-world skills. Interns for The Forensic Panel observe and participate in challenging projects that reward them with transferable experiences for future careers.

The Forensic Panel seeks creative, responsible individuals who thrive in a challenging and dynamic environment with energetic and bright colleagues. Candidates must be prepared to complement an existing team, bring their own ideas, and produce results.

The ideal candidate is an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student who is responsible, detail-oriented and self-motivated, with strong editing and research skills. Preference will be given to those with writing and publishing experience.

Deadlines and Starting Dates

The Forensic Panel offers year-round internships for which there are no deadlines. Internships are granted on a first-come first-serve basis.

Internships offer flexible schedules, allowing students to take outside classes or hold a part-time job.

All internships require a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week (typically four days a week for 5 hours, or three days a week for 7 hours). Preferred candidates are able to commit to a period of six months to one year or a greater number of hours per week.

Compensation

All internships with The Forensic Panel are on voluntary basis. There is no financial compensation or transportation reimbursement. Class credit can be earned when applicable through your university.

A forensic psychology research collection has just opened at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (Downtown LA Campus).

The Garner collection - named in memory of Kenneth Garner, the late (LAPD) Deputy Chief includes books, online periodicals and peer-reviewed journals, DVDs, access to academic research papers, and Internet-based research tools focused on the application of forensic psychology theories, principles, and evidence-based practices in law enforcement.

The collection is available free of charge to local and regional criminal justice agencies and organizations including LAPD, CDCR, the Mayor’s office, and community and faith-based organizations involved in local parolee reentry projects.
