The pilot made an announcement during the flight to the passengers to look out of the windows to the East. It was the Endeavour taking off for the last time in history. A passenger took out the cell phone and got this picture. It has become so popular that the Associated Press bought them!

Δύο χρόνια συμπληρώθηκαν από την κατάληψη του χώρου που οριοθετείται από τις οδούς Χαριλάου Τρικούπη, Ναυαρίνου, Ζωοδόχου Πηγής και Διδότου, στην καρδιά των Εξαρχείων, από κατοίκους που απαίτησαν το πάρκινγκ να γίνει πάρκο! Και τελικά τα κατάφεραν, με αποτέλεσμα ο αυτοδιαχειριζόμενος χώρος να σφύζει σήμερα από ζωή...

Η ιστορία του χώρου:
Στο οικόπεδο που φιλοξενεί σήμερα το πάρκο Ναυαρίνου, χτισμένη από το 1907 μια διάσημη στην εποχή της κλινική, το «Γερουλάνειον Ίδρυμα», η μετέπειτα «Κλινική Σμπαρούνη» που το 1972 έπαψε να λειτουργεί και αγοράστηκε από το Τεχνικό Επιμελητήριο της Ελλάδας. Στη δεκαετία του ΄80 το 4όροφο κτίριο γκρεμίστηκε με σκοπό να χτιστεί στη θέση του μέγαρο που θα στέγαζε τα γραφεία του ΤΕΕ, σχέδιο που δεν πραγματοποιήθηκε ποτέ. Το 1990, το ΤΕΕ προσέφερε το οικόπεδο στο δήμο Αθηναίων για να γίνει πλατεία, ζητώντας να αποζημιωθεί με τίτλο μεταφοράς συντελεστή δόμησης σε ιδιοκτησία του στο Μαρούσι. Λόγω καθυστερήσεων και αλλαγής του πολεοδομικού κώδικα, η ανταλλαγή δεν υλοποιείται κι έτσι το οικόπεδο παρέμενε επί χρόνια, νοικιασμένο σαν πάρκινγκ.

Με τη λήξη της μίσθωσης του πάρκινγκ στο τέλος του 2008, το ΤΕΕ επανέφερε το θέμα οικοδόμησης του οικοπέδου. Η Επιτροπή Πρωτοβουλίας Κατοίκων Εξαρχείων, ωστόσο, ενημερώνει τη γειτονιά, κινητοποιείται και ζητάει άμεσα τη μετατροπή του οικοπέδου σε χώρο υψηλού πρασίνου. Στις 7 Μαρτίου 2009 μαζί με τη συλλογικότητα «Εμείς, Εδώ και Τώρα και για ΄Ολους Εμάς» οργανώνει εκδήλωση και προχωρά σε κατάληψη του χώρου, με αίτημα «το πάρκινγκ να γίνει πάρκο!». Εξαρχειώτες και αλληλέγγυοι σπάνε την άσφαλτο με κομπρεσέρ και κόφτες, φέρνουν φορτηγά με χώμα, φυτεύουν δέντρα και λουλούδια και το γιορτάζουν.

2. Air New Zealand launches new 'cuddle class' seats

From next April, passengers on Air New Zealand can travel in the new 'Skycouch' seats which consist of three economy class seats in a row that can be turned into a couch.

Two people travelling together can buy the middle seat for half the price of a regular seat and then fold up the armrests to give them an area the width of a twin bed.

Speaking about the new seats, Air New Zealand's Chief Executive Rob Fyfe said: “For those who choose, the days of sitting in economy and yearning to lie down and sleep are gone.

“The dream is now a reality, one that you can even share with a travelling companion – just keep your clothes on.”

3. Stand-up airline seats unveiled

Italian firm Avioninteriors, which is developing the SkyRider seat, claims it will offer both cheaper fare options and more capacity on board, reports Travolution.

The designs were released just months after Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary said that he planned to introduce standing room on his flights, with tickets selling for as little as £5 per passenger.

Wobbly Earth Means Your Horoscope Is Wrong! If you look to your horoscope for a preview of your day, look again: You're probably following somebody else's supposed fate.

Thanks to Earth's wobble, astrological signs are, well, bunk. (Or even more bunk than you might expect.)

Astrological signs are determined by the position of the sun relative to certain constellations on a person's day of birth. The problem is, the positions were determined more than 2,000 years ago. Nowadays, the stars have shifted in the night sky so much that horoscope signs are nearly a month off. The shift is caused by precession, the wobble in the Earth's axis caused by the gravitational attraction of the moon to the Earth's equator.

This is very old news however! "The earliest known astronomer to recognize and assess the movement of precession was Aristarchus of Samos, who lived around 280 B.C.," Rao told LiveScience.

Here's what astronomers know: The Earth is like a wobbly top. As it rotates, its axis swings in a circle, pointing in different directions. As the Earth's position shifts, so does our perspective of the night sky.

For example, Rao said, we take the North Star, Polaris, for granted. It's the star most closely aligned with Earth's North Pole. But back when the pyramids were constructed, the star that aligned with the North Pole wasn't Polaris at all: It was a star in the constellation Draco called Thuban. In 12,000 years, Earth's North Star will be Vega, the brightest star in the constellation Lyra.

The complete rotation takes 26,000 years, Rao said.

"Everything in the sky is in flux," he said.

Despite the complete lack of scientific and observational evidence for astrology, here are the "real" dates of astrological signs, according to astronomers:

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

The list includes Ophiuchus, a formation the ancient Babylonians discarded because they wanted 12 star signs, not 13. That's yet another example of how astrologers cherry-pick and ignore astronomical observations, Rao said.

"It's crazy," Rao said. "Really, they have their own set of rules."

This title has been given to the latest braking news from Cyprus in the Associated Press news and needless to say it is one of the rare articles one can find in its thematology! The famous American news agency didn't bother to write anything about the most important problems we have in Cyprus (the Cyprus problem for example) but the Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou being offended from the "Patates Antinakhtes" show broadcasted by CyBC (Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation or RIK).

The year 1964 was a watershed year by any measure. The Beatles arrived, the Civil Rights Act was passed, Nicolas Cage was born and in two separate parts of the world, two separate scientists proposed the existence of quarks, the teeny-tiny subatomic particles that combine to form matter. If you've been paying attention, you know one of these guys is about to get screwed. (Hint: It's George Zweig.)

Zweig had three things going against him in 1964. One, he was a young graduate student, unpublished and unproven. Two, he was working at a particle research center in Geneva. You'd think that would be an advantage, but it turns out his institute had a stringent model for publication, and his paper on quarks, which he called "aces," didn't meet its standards (even though he had come up with a much cooler name for the particle). And three, an older scientist from his grad school proposed the exact same theory at the exact same time and because of his stature was able to publish that exact same theory with the exact same publication that rejected Zweig's.

Just seeing if you're paying attention.

At first, both men were called crazy for their insane notions of invisible particles. They had no model of behavior for the buggers and no methods of ever actually looking at them. But eventually the science world came around, and by 1969, Zweig's rival was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work. As for Zweig ...

It wasn't until the 1970s that anyone could actually prove the existence of quarks, and by that time, the Nobel Prize committee felt it had already given the little particles enough attention, so it was reluctant to revisit the subject. Nevertheless, in 1977, Zweig and his rival were both nominated, but neither won. Zweig ended up changing his field of study to neurobiology, presumably believing that if he made a seminal contribution to every area of science, he'd eventually get credit for something.

Sadly, they don't give a Nobel Prize for smoldering looks.

For those who are familiar with the current economic/political realities in Greece, the following cannot be anything else but funny and hilarious!

The current Prime Minister of Greece during the last pre-election period claimed that "λεφτά υπάρχουν" which translates into the phrase: "Money exist". The whole campaign was centered around phrase which was the flagship towards his victory. Days or hours after the election results he changed his mind maiking this phrase synonymous to mislead and lie..

Hilariously enough, if you put this phrase in Google Translate, the result is "No Money" and not "Money exist"! You can check it yourself!

Days of Heaven - Cambridge University Newspaper

For the first time in the 63 years of presence of the Cambridge University newspaper (Varsity), a controversial photo article is hosted. The newspaper was first published in 1947 as the independent student newspaper for the University of Cambridge and this is the first time ever they include a topless photo.

A 20 year-old girl/student appears half-naked wearing a wool scarf only in the wet fields around Cambridge for this art photography/fashion article of the newspaper. They named it "Days in Paradise" and the aim is to get a simple and tender result!

We've brought up poor old Semmelweis once before, but just in case you don't have a running loop of Cracked articles going through your head, here's the recap: Back in 1847, Semmelweis found himself in charge of two maternity clinics. The first clinic was a teaching school, with medical students learning birthing, autopsying and everything in between. The second clinic was intended for women who couldn't afford health care and was serviced by midwives, not actual doctors or students.

His ear-hair acted as attending physician.

Yet it was the second clinic that women of all social statuses begged to get into. Why? Because if they went to the first clinic they'd have a 10 percent chance of dying of puerperal fever, a six percent greater rate of death than in the midwife-run hospital. Women literally had a better chance of surviving a birth on the street than in the first clinic. After an exhaustive study, Semmelweis figured out that medical students were smothered in disease cooties from cadavers, and that maybe, just maybe, they should wash their hands in between the autopsy room and the birthing rooms.

Not pictured: Sterility.

He insisted students perform a simple chlorine wash after handling dead guys and immediately got the death rate down to one to two percent. With numbers like that, you'd think the whole continent of Europe, much less the medical community, would have crowned him "king of live babies" or something.
His Genius Was Rewarded By ...
First dementia, then a beatdown at an insane asylum, then death, by virtually the same disease he had eradicated in his own hospital.

Semmelweis didn't just have the disregard of his contemporaries, he had their flat-out scorn. Maybe it was because he didn't get around to explaining himself on paper right away, so no one understood what hand-washing had to do with keeping people alive. Some doctors were actually insulted that he was accusing Viennese medical students being dirty enough to kill people.
Within 14 years of his groundbreaking discovery, Semmelweis just stopped giving a fuck. He got drunk all the time and called all his detractors "ignoramuses" and "murderers." He started chilling with prostitutes and lashing out at family. That last part proved to be a bad move, because in 1865 they had him committed to an insane asylum, where he was promptly beat up and stuck in a dark cellar.

He died two weeks later. It took another 20 years and Louis Pasteur's germ theory for the rest of the world to come around to the concept of washing your hands to keep from getting sick.
