They don't require much exercise, they don't need obedience training, and they have a convenient litter box to go to the bathroom. In fact, it is often said that dogs have masters while cats have servants. Nevertheless, the breed of cat you choose will depend on a few factors that require a closer look.

If you choose a kitten, purebreds will be a more predictable choice since you'll know precisely how they'll look as adults. There are also popular breeds like Siamese, Maine Coon, and Persian that are chosen for their distinct look. There is more, however, to choosing the right cat for your household than meets the eye.

One should consider a cat's personality, for one thing. An Abyssinian is a much friendlier cat with strangers than a Siamese or a Bombay, for instance. An American Shorthair or a Ragdoll would be other good choices for houses with children. If there are other animals in the house, this may impact your decision as well, but most dog breeds can get along with cats, with patience.

Grooming is another issue. Long-haired cats like the Birman, Persian, and Angora breeds require frequent brushing to keep their fur in good shape, and may require baths and conditioner to eliminate tangled, matted fur.

Cats, like dogs and humans, have specific health issues that require either vaccinations or frequent monitoring to diminish their impact on your pet. Fleas and worms are parasitic pests that can cause a host of health issues, including anemia.

Some breeds, like Persians, have specific respiratory problems or eye diseases that require immediate attention. Regular vaccinations and checkups with a vet will protect against the most common viruses like Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.

Some people are extremely sensitive or allergic to certain cat breeds, while others may cause no reaction at all. Scientifically, there are no known hypoallergenic cat breeds, though some claim that Siberians are. All cats have dander, and this is the element responsible for most allergies, not cat hair.

Cat breeds also differ by how active they are. Bengals, Burmese, Abyssinians, and Balinese are all examples of very lively breeds that need space to run and play, while the Bombay, Ragdoll, Russian Blue, and Havana Brown are known for being quiet and very docile.

Whatever breed you choose, it helps to have these specific requirements in mind, and to research the characteristics of different types of cats before making a final decision. This is the best way to choose a pet that fits your personality and thrives in your home environment.
If you're a dog person, well this article really isn't for you. However if you're the type that loves cats you really need to look into one of the most beautiful breeds out there and that is the Persian. This is a very popular breed and one you should consider if looking to get your very own feline.

Known as one of the most attractive, adorable, and interesting breeds of cats, Persian cats make great pets because of their ability to adjust to an indoor environment. With unique characteristics such as big eyes, wide heads, and thick fur, people can identify them more easily from other cat breeds. Because of their thick fur, pet owners need to wash, clean, and brush these cute little creatures regularly.

Compared to other breeds of cats, pet owners love Persians for their gentle and relaxed appeal, which makes them a perfect pet especially for children. Another advantage of owning such cats is their natural inclination to stay indoors, making them suitable pets even for busy people who are always in and out of their house. Their thick coats make them extremely lovable and very nice to cuddle.

Because of their diverse colors, people can classify Persian cats into several different kinds. Some of their most common colors are lilac, black, and white. In the meantime, some of the cutest types of Persians are the Shaded Silver Doll-Faced Persian, the Persian Chinchilla, and the Red-and-White Bicolor Persian. Additionally, other types such as the Tortoise-Shell Persian Cat, the Persian Calico, and the Blue Point Persian are also very much adorable.

Persian cats are very easy to feed and nourish, however their tastes are more sensitive compared to ordinary cat breeds. Owners usually feed them with cat biscuits, raw meat, and chicken. As they grow, their nutritional needs change, making it necessary for the owners to make a diet plan that will keep their pets healthy all the time. For one to two months old Persians, a milk diet seems very much appropriate. As they reach four months and beyond, pet owners can now start feeding them with soft diet, including chicken and other vitamin-enriched food.

Grooming is an integral part when taking care of Persian cats, mainly because of their thick fur and gooey eyes. Bathing, drying, and brushing are basic procedures needed to maintain the beauty and texture of their fur. At the same time, pet owners can make their Persians always healthy through regular visits to veterinarians. Keeping these cats always clean can help prevent infections and other diseases from pestering these lovable creatures. Concerning the skin of Persian cats, pet owners must check them out for wounds, abrasions, or cuts, which are possible sources of infections and diseases.

While Persian cats do make excellent pets, owners can reciprocate such advantages by taking good care of them always. Expect longer years together with these super lovable and adorable creatures by taking care of them well through proper grooming and nourishment.
In this article, I present a few tips to help prevent litter box problems.

Location of litter box:

• Do not put the litter box in an out-of the-way spot to minimize odor and prevent cat litter from being tracked throughout the house.

• Your Persian cat, as well as other cat breeds, may not like their litter box ending up in the basement, next to an appliance or on a cold cement floor

• The litter box should be kept in a spot that affords the cat some privacy, yet is also in a convenient location

• If you place the litter box in a closet or bathroom, be sure the door is wedged open from both sides to prevent he or she from being trapped inside or locked out

• Depending upon the location, you might even consider cutting a hold in a closet door and adding a pet door
Litter:
• Research has shown most cats, which includes the docile Persian, prefer fine-grained litters, most likely because of the softer feel

• The new scoop-able (clumping) litters usually have finer grains than the typical clay litter and are very popular

• High-quality, dust-free, clay litters are relatively small-grained and may be perfectly acceptable to your cat

• If the pet has spent part of his or her life outdoors, he or she may be inclined to eliminate in your houseplants. Try mixing some potting soil with your regular litter. Pellet-type litters or those made from citrus peels are not recommended.

• When you find a litter your Persian cat likes, stick with it.

• Do not be tempted to buy the sale or least expensive litter in any given week. This could result in your pet not using the litter box.

• Many cats do not like the odor of scented or deodorant litters

• It is not a good idea to place a room deodorizer or air freshener near the litter box

• A thin layer of baking soda placed on the bottom of the box will help absorb odors without repelling the cat, and odors should not be a problem as well if you keep the litter box

• If you find the litter box offensive, your Persian cat will probably find it even more offensive and won't want to eliminate there

• Always keep one litter box per cat, this helps prevent multiple cats from eliminating in the litter box because it is already occupied

• You might also want to consider placing litter boxes in several locations around the house in multiple cat households

• Place at least one litter box on each level of your house

• Since it is not possibly to personalize the litter boxes for each cat in your household, someone might occasionally refuse to use a litter box after another cat has used it (sort of like people don't like to use a toilet that was just used and not flushed). In this case, all litter boxes will need to be kept extremely clean and additional boxes may be needed.

Covered Litter Boxes
• A covered litter box may introduce potential problems

• To find out which type your Persian cat prefers, you might want to experiment by offering both types at first
Potential Problems of Covered Litter Boxes
• You might forget to clean the litter box as frequently as you should because the dirty litter is "out of sight."

• A covered litter box traps odors inside. It will need to be cleaned more often than an open one.

• A covered litter box may not allow a large Persian cat sufficient room to turn around, scratch, dig, or get into a preferred position

• A covered litter box may make it easier for another cat to lay in wait and "ambush" the user as she or he exits the box

Positive side to a covered litter box:
• It may feel more private and timid Persians or other cat breeds may even prefer it

Keeping the litter box clean:

• Feces should be scooped out daily

• How often you change the litter depends upon the number of cats you have, the number of litter boxes, and the type of litter you use

• Twice a week is a general guideline for clay litter

• If you clean the litter box daily, scoop-able litter may only need to be changed every two to three weeks

• If you notice an odor or if much of the litter is wet or clumped, it is time to change it

• Do not use strong smelling chemicals or cleaning products when washing the litter box. The cat may refuse to use it, and some cleaning products are toxic to cats. Soap and water is sufficient.

Liners:

• Some Persian cats may not mind having a plastic liner in the litter box, while others do. You may want to experiment to see what your cat prefers.

• If you use a liner, be sure it is anchored in place, so it can't easily catch your cat's claws or be pulled out of place

Depth of litter:

• More is not better. Most Persian cats won't use litter that is more than about two inches deep, and some even prefer less litter and a smooth, slick surface, such as the bottom of the litter box

• Adding extra litter does not help keep the box clean

Litter-Training:

• Cats are not litter-trained in the same way dogs are housetrained.

• A cat does not need to be taught what to do with a litter box

• Instinct will generally take over

• Provide an acceptable, accessible litter box using the suggestions in this article

• It is also not generally necessary to move her paws back and forth in the litter, and may create an unpleasant experience that is likely to initiate a negative association with the litter box. However, there are some cat owners who feel this is necessary, it is not generally recommended by most cat behavioral specialists.

What if problems still develop?

• If your Persian cat begins to eliminate in areas other than the litter box, call your vet. Many medical conditions can cause a change in a cat's litter box habits

• If the vet determines your Persian cat is healthy, the cause may be behavior that can be resolved by using behavior modification techniques

• Punishment is never the answer

• Never throw your cat outdoors for a litter box problem

• If you cannot solve the problem yourself, contact an animal behavior specialist who has experience working with cats
As an instinctive habit, cat groom themselves, and as part of this process they lick and swallow the excess hair off their coat. Surprisingly enough, almost all of this hair goes through the feline's digestive system without any problems. This only becomes an issue when the hair doesn't go through an remains in the digestive tract. This hair accumulates over time, as more and more hair join together to form a hair ball. The larger the size of the hair ball, the greater the threat becomes of this becoming a health issue.

Many felines are able to remove this excess hair simply by scratching it off. However, swallowing the hair complements this process. When they have accumulated a hair ball in their stomach they usually get ready to get rid of it some way or another. The sound they make when making an effort to expulse the hair ball out is most annoying, similar to a person with something stuck in their throat. Many cat owners agree that the worse time for their cat to get rid of a hairball is in the middle of the night, when they can keep everyone in the house awake. To make things even worse, the hairball is left in either the bathroom floor or living room rug where the pet owner is sure to step on it.

As undesirable these hairballs may be laying around your home, there are less desirable when they remain in your cat's digestive system. If the cat fails to extract the hairball from his stomach, it could make its way into the intestine, where it would create an obstacle that could only be removed through expensive surgery.

The signs of a hairball gone bad, and into the intestine are usually loss of appetite, depression, continuous coughing and a general lack of interest to groom himself anymore. Pet owners of long haired cats, such as the Persian breed, should be extra careful with hairballs affecting their pet than any others. Their long hair gets tangled easier and is likely to make a large hairball much faster.

Grooming your pet will always be the most effective action against the forming of hairballs. Scheduled brushing of the cat's coat at least once a day will ensure that the excess hair don't end up in the pet's tongue and stomach. As an extra measure for owners of long haired cats, you might want to consider keeping the length of the hair under control. Extra long hair is liable to become a hairball much faster.

Cat owners may also want to consider purchasing special cat food that contains ingredients which are especially made to combat hair in the digestive system. However, this type of food can be expensive. If your budget is limited, consider anti-hair remedies you administer your cat to prevent the hairballs from forming. In any case, responsible pet owners should consult their veterinarian first before submitting their cat to any substances they are not familiar with.

Short hair cats also suffer from this problem, but it's more common to those that have longer hair, like Persian cats.

What happens is that the cat licks the fur, and swallows hair as a result. Since the digestive system can process it easily, sometimes it gathers in hairballs in the stomach. This doesn't happen all the time, as it usually just gets evacuated like anything that reaches the stomach. When the hairball does appear, sometimes it can become quite big, and the health of the cat can be in danger.

When a cat has problems because of hairballs, it will be evident by the fact that it doesn't eat anymore. In most cases, cats are able to just cough up the hairball, so don't be alarmed when you hear harsh noises coming from the cat. It sounds a bit like it's choking, but it all goes away once the hairball is spat out.

However, if the cat can't spit out the hairball, it can get lodged in and it will keep growing. The result might be constipation for the cat and they might stop grooming themselves. If it gets to this stage, the cat needs to be taken to a vet as soon as possible, so they remove the hairball from the stomach, surgically. While your wallet (or the cat) will not enjoy this visit to the vet, it's a necessary procedure if the cat can't spit out the hairball on her own.

You can use a cat grooming rake to get the hair that is loose and dead from the cat, helping her with the grooming and trying to prevent the appearance of hairballs in her stomach. If the cat is moulting, the importance of such a grooming process is even more important. In the beginning the cat might hate the grooming process, but if you start doing it since it's a kitten, she will learn to like it. Doing this, you will notice a large quantity of dead hair taken off your cat, hair that will not get in her stomach if you groom her.

If the cat has problems with hairballs on a regular basis, you can buy some food products that are designed to help cats digest the hair, so it doesn't build up in their tummy. I can't guarantee for these products, as I haven't used any of them.

Well known for their gentle and sweet personalities and their long hair, Persian cats have very attractive features. They are great companions for virtually anyone, and not very demanding. Unlike other breeds, such as the Siamese breed, Persian breeds need very little attention.

Although white is the color normally associated with Persian cats, they actually come in a variety of other colors as well. During competitions, they are divided into seven color divisions - solid, silver and gold, tabby, shaded and smoke, particolor, bicolor, and Himalayan. No matter what color of Persian cat it may be, they are best noticed during competitions by their long and flowing coats.

Persian cats should always be kept inside of the house, to protect their coat. If they travel outside, they can easily damage their coat. They will also need to be brushed daily with a metal comb, or their coat can become tangled, which will lead to hairballs. You'll need to bathe your Persian cat on a regular basis as well, to help protect his coat. Bathing works best when the cat is young, as it will get him used to it. Bathing should never be overlooked, as it will keep your cats coat looking clean and healthy. Although some breeds can maintain their coats on their own, Persians can't. Their fur is long and dense and you'll need to groom them daily to ensure their coat stays healthy.

The Persian breed is gentle and sweet, getting along great with everyone - including kids. They have a pleasant voice that is always good to hear. Using their voice and their eyes, they can communicate very well with their owners. They are very playful, yet they don't require a lot of attention. They love attention however, and love being admired. Unlike other cats, they don't climb and jump much at all. They aren't destructive either; they just love being admired and lying around. A majority of the time, Persian cats love to bask in the sun and show others just how beautiful they truly are.

Although most breeds can be kept indoors or outside, Persian cats should always be kept inside and never allowed to go outside of the house. Keeping them inside with protect their coats and also keep diseases and common parasites away from them as well. You won't have to worry about cars or dogs either if you keep your pet inside. To ensure that your Persian pet stays healthy, you should always take him to the vet on an annual basis. If cared for properly, such as grooming, shots, and checkups, Persian cats can live as long as 20 years. One thing you'll need to be aware of that's common with Persians is their eyes. Their eyes are very big and can sometimes be too much for the cat to clean. This is a common healthy problem with the breed, and should be checked on a regular basis to ensure that it doesn't get out of control.

When you compare Persians to other breeds, you'll notice that the Persians are among the easiest to keep. You don't have to worry about things like jumping or climbing, as Persians don't like to do either. All you'll need to do is feed your cat and groom him or him on a daily basis. Even though grooming can be quite a bit of work in the long run - it's well worth it when you have a healthy an beautiful Persian cat.
It is a well known fact that skin and coat problems account for a large percentage of trips to the vet.

The hair support systems require a variety of nutrients that include fatty acids, minerals and vitamins to function properly. As the body delivers these nutrients to the primary organs of heart, lungs, and liver, the remainder is sent to the sebaceous glands in the skin. Lots of protein is required for a healthy Persian cat coat of hair.

The hair of a Persian cat is one aspect that makes it so beautiful to look at. You want to really pay close attention to cultivating a beautiful coat of hair as well as maintaining healthy skin.

With the very best of nutrition levels, almost 95% of the protein that's taken in by your Persian cat is used by the body to support hair production and maintenance. Protein is extremely important for nourishing the Persian cat's hair and skin.

You want to concentrate on finding the most nutritious food on the market to feed your Persian cat. Read your pet food labels carefully and be sure it contains high protein levels.

In addition, it is also advisable to give your Persian cat companion a balanced supplement on a daily basis. This will provide optimum nutritional support necessary to achieve the utmost in a healthy coat and skin.

A perfect balance supplement will contain:
• Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to help provide nourishment to the skin
These oils should also be certified-free of contaminants and in microencapsulated form to increase absorption, so your Persian cat receives the maximum of a nutritional benefit.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are being studied intensively for their nutritional value throughout the body in humans, dogs and cats. The Cornell Feline Health Center was one of the first to demonstrate the positive effects of Omega-3 oils in maintaining healthy skin and coat. Be sure your skin and coat supplement contains these vital oils.

Other important ingredients to look for in a skin and coat supplement for the Persian cat are:
• Vitamins A, D, and E that provide antioxidant support
These vitamins are all necessary for the maintenance of healthy skin and a glossy coat in all companion animals as well as the Persian cat.

Another good point to look for is where the supplements are manufactured. Are they manufactured in a human pharmaceutical plant so you can be confident that you are providing your Persian cat with the highest quality product available?

What about the taste and flavor of the supplement you choose for your Persian cat? Is it tasty enough that the cat will look forward to receiving it each day?

No matter what season it is, a Skin and Coat supplement can help to make your Persian cat's coat healthy, glossy and beautiful.
Most Persian cats have thick coats of fur and are nice to cuddle with. If you wish to find that perfect little one that you can love and adore, then the best place to go to would be a Persian Breeder or a Persian Cattery.

Persian Breeders are people and businesses that breed and raise Persian cats for a living. These people usually breed with the best and most healthy Persian cats. They dedicate their time and effort into raising beautiful, healthy Persian cats that are registered with CFA or similar associations. As with any type of business -- for Persian Breeding is a business -- you will find both reputable and deceitful Breeders. Those of a reputable standard will be able to show you proof of where the cats came from, parents of kittens and the necessary documentation for their cats. If you find yourself conversing with someone less reputable or outright deceitful then it is best to contact your local authorities.

The difference between a Persian Breeder and a Persian Cattery is that a Persian Cattery breeds and raises their Persian cats for their own benefit as much as for the customer seeking a Persian kitten. There are many reputable catteries and they also have many different goals. Some Persian Catteries breed their cats for the main purpose of having the perfect show cats. Many Persian catteries do not breed their cats for the purpose of providing pets for families but rather for the purpose of having the best and most beautiful show cats.

Having the perfect cat is one thing but maintaining that cat's health and beauty is quite another. Persian cats have thick fur and their coats need to be groomed daily -- combed or brushed. You can find many Cat grooming products at your local pet shop. It is best to use a wide-metal tooth comb instead of a brush. If you use a brush, then only do so to 'fluff' the coat and make sure to first remove any mats in the coat. If you groom your cat daily then matting should not be a problem.

You can either bathe your cat yourself or you can go to a professional groomer. You know that your cat needs a bath when they begin to look greasy as the dirt accumulates and matting will increase if you do not bath your cat. If you decide to bathe your Persian cat yourself then you need to first remove all mats with a wide-toothed comb. Do not pull on the hair as you can remove the hair to the root and bald patches will form.
The perfect cat needs the perfect home and you will reap the benefits of having the perfect Persian cats if you show him/her the love and care that all cats deserve. Care for your cat to the best of your abilities and they will love and care for you in return.
