Check Back after April 22nd

Let's go dancing in the Roaring 20's

2011-01-07T11:31:00.000-08:00

My blog this week is inspired by a book I'm currently reading called American Gangster and Other Tales of New York.. I love gangster movies, mafia movies, etc. I've watched everything from Goodfellas, Scarface, Blood in Blood out. but I have to admit my favorite era is the 20's.

My new favorite show is Boardwalk Empire. I
love the way people talk, dress, and act in that period.

Although I can't jump into a time machine and go back to the Roaring 20's at least I can dress the part....

The best way to dress for this era is to go vintage shopping.
Online or in the big city... If you don't find anything than I'm sure you'll find something inspired by the 20's.

This one is for the Gossip Girl fanatic

2010-12-11T12:28:00.000-08:00

I am a huge fan of Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl...I love her fashion sense, confidence, and ambition (not a big fan of her treachery though).. Besides being a little Manhattan rich kid, she's different from Serena because she actually strives for greatness and comes from a home with an actual working mother.

One of my favorite quotes to Chuck Bass is "As long as I'm with you, I'm Hillary in the White House. And I want to be Hillary, Secretary of State. Except with better hair".

She doesn't just want to marry rich, she wants to make it on her own and that says millions. Okay I know she's a character but when Monday comes around I can't wait to see what Blair Waldorf will be wearing next.....

I love Valentino Red (Oscar De La Renta mind you) and this dress is hot. The Best part is the pink shoes, handbag, and don't forget Harry Winston of course.

Do you Etsy?

2010-12-02T09:54:00.000-08:00

It's shocking how so many people have no clue what Etsy is and not shocked that my sister who resides in Mississippi did.
If you go on Craigslist to find used cr*p for cheap prices or go on EBAY to bargain your way into something new or semi used than I think you'll like Etsy.
If you enjoy craft fairs or shopping for jewelry at the Farmers Market than Etsy is for you.

Etsy is community of buyers, sellers of handmade products. They also sell vintage and supplies, You will find just about everything....jewelry, blankets, ribbon, clothes, dog collars. Below are a couple finds on Etsy:

What it takes to be a woman and fabulous

2010-11-24T10:53:00.000-08:00

Being a woman isn't easy but we all do our best to look good and feel fantastic and empowered. It's not easy to keep up with changes in fashion and beauty when you're on a budget but it's not impossible.

Some woman buy fabulous clothes for cheap prices, wear the latest perfume, and work out when possible. Everyone has their own way of being a woman and fabulous. Below are a few suggestions for the 2010 Holiday Season to continue the efforts we make to be fabulous in our everyday lives.

Holiday reads to EMPOWER the everyday Woman

Chanel: A Woman of her Own by Axel Madsen

Becoming Jane Austen by Jon Spence

BEAUTY for thought: feel, smell, and look fabulous

Mani/pedi- personally I prefer saving my money and doing my nails myself so I try to keep it simple. I am currently in love with dark nail polish and apparently celebrities are too..I always look to CHANEL to see what new colors are out. Although I prefer not spend 25.00 a bottle on nail polish it's not hard to find a Chanel color knock off at Target or Sephora for a lot cheaper.

OPI for Sephora currently sporting color caffeine fix

(not sold online but should be in-stores)

OPI for Sephora $9

Butter LONDON nail color Union Jack Black

(awesome if you don't mind wearing black even though it's not Halloween)

butter LONDON $14

CHANEL nail color Black Velvet

(beautiful nail color)

CHANEL $25

Bath & Body- everyone needs to buy the perfect body wash but what if it's 3 in 1. Bath, Body wash and Shampoo. I recommend the new Philosophy product at Sephora or if you love the smell of freshly squeezed lemons then Bath & Body works is the place to.

Philosophy- Amazing Grace Bath, Shampoo and Shower Gel.

( perfumed gel that can be used for ll three, smells divine. If you don' take my word for it, ask for a sample at Sephora)

Amazing Grace 16oz $22, 24oz $30

Bath & Body Works- C.O. Bigelow's Lemon body cleanser
( I love the scent of lemon so this is a fave of mine)

C.O. Bigelow's Lemon body cleanser 10oz $12

Join reward clubs at all your favorite stores....especially Sephora. You will enjoy all the perks that come with them.

STOP!!! if you're thinking of getting a dog/cat..please consider adopting

2010-11-14T21:26:00.000-08:00

Man's Best Friend

Today I went to Sierra Vista Mall to check out the new Kohls that sprung up on that side of town. As I walked in I heard two dogs barking and quickly went on a search to figure out where the barking was coming from. It was a pet adoption center called ACT (Animal Compassion Team of California). As I walked it my heart began to melt. I have such a soft side for dogs and wanted to take them all home.
I think everyone who is considering getting a dog or cat should strongly consider adopting instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a pure breed. There are so many cute, adorable, and absolutely lovable animals that will make the whole process worth it.

Just walk in and trust me these animals will win your heart over.

To read more on the topic I have listed some links below:

If you are interested in adoption here is the link to ACT and some of the dogs/cats they have up for adoption:

Patch 2 month old pitbull terrier

Abigail 2 months Dachshund/Chihuahua and brothers Archie and Arnold

Airline Magazines-Great Ideas can equal Great Success!

2010-11-12T17:10:00.000-08:00

While I was flying home from Mississippi I started flipping through the pages of my AmericanWay Magazine (the magazine offered on American Airline flights) and came across an interesting article.

The Denim King

By the way I love reading inflight magazines and finding half finished crossword puzzles.... okay back to the article.

The article was titled "The Denim King" ands hunky cowboy look-alike image quickly caught my attention. As I started reading the article I noticed that the concept was about clothing resale. Better yet....DENIM RESALE. Everyone loves a good pair of denim jeans and it's amazing how long they've been around and not much has changed. Brit Eaton aka Hunky Cowboy look-alike, travels around the U.S. in search of really old used denim jeans. He travels to remote areas where people most likely don't know what Facebook or Google is and finds jeans that are 50-100 years old. He buys these jeans for nearly nothing and sells them for hundreds of dollars at places like the Rose Bowl flea market in Pasadena. People buy these jeans to foster new ideas in fashion, buy a unique collectable or to add a new OLD pair of jeans to their closet. I think the best part is that he's utilizing the idea of recycling fashion. Cotton prices are skyrocketing and jeans are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Great ideas can equal great success. The trick is to follow your intuition and see your idea through.

I find it incredible how individuals fall upon a gold mine unexpectedly and end up on Forbes 400. I doubt Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, or even Bill Gates knew they would one day make this famous list of "The Richest People in America". It's amazing how one idea can revolutionize the way people think, shop, and network. I like to stop once in a while, flip through the pages of Forbes and imagine where I might be 10 years. You never know....maybe one day I might make THE list.

WINE bars!

2010-11-08T18:42:00.000-08:00

When I lived in LA I loved drinking wine and chatting the night away with my girlfriends. A good wine bar isn't always easy to come by. It's not just about the wine....It's the lighting, the people, the entire atmosphere! One of my favorite places to go to in Downtown LA was The MUST

The hardest thing about moving to Fresno is the lack of places like the MUST. Actually the lack of wine bars in general. I found a couple through word of mouth and friends.

-Vino and Friends
-The Tasting Room
-The Cellar Door

Now I plan to attend them and follow up with a review!

Fall is definitely HERE!

2010-10-30T09:31:00.000-07:00

Legwarmers!

I want some Legwarmers...well sort of

Above the Knee Socks!!

The best part of above the knee socks is that you can wear pumps or open toes and still stay warm in the fall. Knitted socks paired with some knee high boots looks awesome!

Creative tights!

If you must wear tights under your dress make sure they have a creative pattern on them this fall.

Boo!!! Great Halloween Costumes 2010

2010-10-30T08:59:00.000-07:00

Popular Costumes and great ideas for the future

Corpse Bride- if you saw this week's episode of Modern Family my advise is make your own Corpse Bride. Go to a second hand store, yard sale, etc and find a bride costume. Buy some tulle and make your own veil. Stain the garments with coffee, dark dyed jeans, or if desperate DIRT.

Mad Hatter, Alice in Wonderland, Queen of Aces- I love the new take on an old Classic. The costumes were beautiful and the make up was insane. I love everything Alice in Wonderland. My take on the costume is to make your own. Most Alice in Wonderland costumes out there are a bit sl*tty and if that's not the image you want to portray then I would definitely try to make your own or hire someone to make it for you. The Mad Hatter Costumes are not too shabby. You can always add more decor to the mass made costumes sold at Halloween stores.

LADY GAGA- she is perfect for Halloween. All here looks scream costume and there are so many to pick from. Just make sure that if you sport the look to also hold the attitude. She's a DIVA and anyone pretending to be Lady GAGA needs to have the same attitude.

Diana Ross- I love seeing people dressed as diana ross on Halloween. Especially kids....they're the cutest things ever! Very simple costume. Just buy a fabulous short dress, get the made up smokey, some high heel pumps, and work the hair (tease it until it makes you a whole inche taller) . If you don't have the hair than you buy a wig and tease it.

...you can never have too MANY sweaters

2010-10-14T14:53:00.000-07:00

I love sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, and you name it. My closet probably consists of 50% sweaters/hoodies/sweatshirts/cardigans/etc. Every time i walk into a store I normally gravitate towards hoodies and oversized cardigans. All the colors, styles, and sized. Now that fall is here I won't look so crazy when I'm wearing my favorite hoodie around.

Must haves for Fall/Winter 2010

Cardigan: a sweater, usually long-sleeved,collarless and originally knitted from wool that fastens up the front , typically with buttons.

[everyone needs a cardigan...they compliment just about anything you wear and it is easy to carry around if it is not in use]

Sweater: a knitted or crocheted upper-body garment, in either pullover or cardigan style. Constructed in various fabrics, commonly wool, and with different types of necklines.

[ remember sweaters and sweatshirts are similar but not the same thing. everyone should have a wool sweater for cold winter days]

Sweatshirt: A casual, loose-fitting top typically made of heavyweight fleece-backed cotton or other cotton blends, with cuffs, neckline, and waistband constructed in a rib knit.

[I usually love buying my sweatshirts in a french terry or velour fabric]

Hoodie: a term first used in the 1980s to describe a sweatshirt that features a hood. Hoodies typically have a kangaroo pocket and a drawstring.

[My FAVE....hoodies are perfect for everyday use...cleaning, exercising, camping, lounging. They come in different shapes and sizes, materials, and can be very decorative with rhinestones or embroidery. ]

"Green" is the new PINK

2010-10-01T14:35:00.000-07:00

GO GREEN

Not too long ago whenever you walked into a grocery store you noticed the supermarkets NEW effort to get the buyer to use reusable bags.

Most people say "no thank you" either because the grocery store charged 5 cents for each bag or doubted they would ever use them again. On top of that the bags were usually a single color with the name of the store, not durable ,and has "0" style.

Some stores like IKEA have been doing this for years. They'll just charge you for both (.5 cents for plastic or .59 cents for BIG BLUE) but at least the big blue comes in handy (laundry, moving, etc) and reusable.

*99% of the time a percentage of the sale of these bags go back to help the cause.

I found some bags that I think are fashionable and at the same time show that you are doing your part for the Environment.

seabag - tote 14 x14 made from recycled sails. pricey but awesome even for arts and crafts. Check out the site and see other cute bags available from recycled materials

gogreenbags.com- wholesale manufacturers supplying stores with the option for their customers. If you own a store I would consider going to this site.

Blueavocado.com- Blue Avacado has a great selection (patterns & colors) and many other type of reusable bags including sandwich bags.

Green Girls Market- selection of bags with quotes.

Other cool/cheaper alternatives:

Trader Joe's: awesome prints and durable ($1.00)

Ikea: now they come in different styles and offer more stylist prints (.49-$2.99)
