So, Tim Cook and company took to the stage today to show off their
revamped product line as well as adding the long-awaited iPad Mini to
the Apple family.

We’re going to break it down for you.

What We’re Skipping Past

Number one — Apple always loves blowing themselves and letting
everyone know how well Apple’s doing. That’s fine, it’s great, but we’re
not going to talk about that right now.

iPhone 5 sold a whole bunch, inspired quite possibly the most obnoxious advertisement ever (that’s right, Samsung. You’re more annoying than the Cult of Mac. How does that feel?), and is the savior of civilization. Great.

iBooks Got A Little Upgrade

Right quick — they updated iBooks. Continuous scrolling, integration with Facebook and Twitter so you can prove that you’re actually reading Infinite Jest
instead of just looking up grad papers about it and having it broken
down for you, and it supports Japanese and Chinese text, which… well, I
guess matters to a lot of people that aren’t me.

Upgraded 13″ Macbook Pro

They’ve made the Macbook Pro 3/4 of an inch thick, now, and at three
and a half pounds, it’s almost a full pound lighter than the preceding
model, which is actually quite nice. Though pretty soon — as in, three
years or so — we’re going to start getting complaints that laptops are too light.

The optical drive is gone, and they’ve given it a Retina display,
which was long-rumored and assumed by everyone so hard that no one
seemed surprised. At 2560×1660 pixels, it has a larger display than most
HDTVs.

Better speakers, an HD camera, and USB 3 connectors round out what
else is upgraded, as well as the insides. I.e., it’s faster. I could
talk a while about CPUs, y’know? Let’s just say it’s faster and you’ll
believe me and we can move on.

Upgraded Mac Mini

The Mac Mini line hasn’t really been talked about in a while. It’s
usually either ignored or a, “oh, by the way, we did something with
this” is all you’ll get out of them.

So they’ve upgraded it, and added the option of a Fusion Drive
— which is essentially a hybrid between a flash drive and your
conventional hard drive. Both technologies are all under the same
volume, so you’re not saving one thing onto the flash drive and another
onto the hard drive.

Basically, you’re getting the processing speed of flash and the
bigger, long-term storage of a hard drive. What Fusion Drive does is
keep track of what applications and documents you use. The things you
use more get put into flash. Things you use less get put into the deeper
archives. And it does it automatically. You don’t have to do anything.

In reality, it’s a stop-gap until flash drives become cheaper to
produce. But hey, if you need a lot of space and you’re a power user,
this would be something helpful.

And the Fusion Drive is also in what I think is the most impressive piece of the event.

Upgraded iMac

The iMac looks sexy. I like my Windows desktop.
I like building that PC and I like using Windows 7. But damn, the iMac
looks great, here. It is ridiculously thin. It’s 80% thinner from the
previous generation. People originally thought it was going to be a
monitor to show off some software, but turns out, the monitor also had a
dang computer in it, too.

The iMac also has the Fusion Drive option, which I don’t know how you fit that shit in there, but go nuts.

Upgraded iPad

Faster, Retina display, yes, yes, we’re there. Okay. It comes in every color you want — provided it’s either black or white.

There’s not much here, they know what y’all are waiting for. So here it is:

Unveiling: iPad Mini

And there it is. It’s an iPad. It’s smaller, with a 7.9″ diagonal (compared to iPad’s 9.7″ diagonal). They spent a long time talking about how it had to be smaller, but couldn’t be too small. A nice design move was to make sure the resolution between the iPad and iPad Mini didn’t change, so it doesn’t futz with your existing iPad apps. That was nice of them.

Also, on the inside, the iPad Mini is actually faster than the iPad
2. So if you’re planning on making an upgrade and want to stay in the
Apple family, you can keep in mind that the Mini wouldn’t be a
performance decrease, if all of a sudden the iPad feels too bulky.

It also has a 5 Megapixel iSight camera, which is cool. It starts at 16 GB for $329 (wifi only). iPad 2 still at $399. So the Mini is also a bit cheaper. If you want more price checks — go look for yourself.

The iPad Mini is reported to be the new little iPad will feature a
7.85-inch IGZO display with 330 pixels/inch, 1024 x 768 resolution. It
will be more affordable. It is also assumed that the new tablet will
feature Apple's upcoming operating system, iO6.

Putting iOS 6 in the mini tablet will include a new, Google-free Maps app, and Passbook, and promises better Facebook
integration, better maps, and better video conferences that use
cellular data, according to Entrepreneur.com. It is also said to have a
smaller dock connector and thinner bezel. It may also feature a music
service similar to Pandora radio, WiFi, and Retina Display.
Rumors claimed that iPad Mini will cost around US$299 and US$349,
which is more expensive than its rivals Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire
HD that starts at US$199.
Below are some of the features that you should expect on the launching event of iPad Mini.

Screen Size - The iPad Mini will most probably
feature a 7.85 inch screen display diagonally. It will be slightly
bigger than other 7-inch tablets in the market.

No Retina Display - The final resolution of the iPad
is not available but it can be said that the screen will not feature
the Retina Display. However, the latest iPad Mini from Apple will
feature an extremely high density which will render everything in great
details and will offer smoothest, sharpest text and pictures.

Smaller Dock Connector -iPad Mini will most likely include an 8-pin dock connector that was first introduced in iPhone 5. Though the new connector is a little more costly for the iPhone
5 owners who will have to purchase the lightning adapters to run their
applications on the iPhone 5, still it is a welcome development since it
does away with the 30 pin connector many pins of which are obsolete and
seldom used.

iOS 6 - The new device willr run with Apple's latest
mobile software - iOS 6. This operating system includes new iOS Maps
and other features.

Thinner Design - The pictures released in the
beginning showed that the iPad Mini was significantly thicker than the
original iPad, the later pictures suggests that the iPad Mini will be
much thinner and is easier to carry than the iPad.

Who's to blame for Apple's disappointing Maps experience?

Fingers are pointing at Apple iOS software Vice President, Scott Forstall, and some say he should be fired over the mess.

Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt asks, "Does Apple have a Scott Forstall problem?"
Forstall eloquently introduced Apple Maps to the world at its
conference a few weeks ago. There was no mention of the service having
any limitations.

Former Apple executive and venture capitalist Jean-Louis Grassee writes of the deception:

"[Forstall's]
demo was flawless, 2D and 3D maps, turn-by-turn navigation, spectacular
flyovers… but not a word from the stage about the app's limitations, no
self-deprecating wink, no admission that iOS Maps is an infant that
needs to learn to crawl before walking, running, and ultimately lapping
the frontrunner, Google Maps. Instead, we're told that Apple's Maps may be 'the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever.'"

Maps isn't Forstall's first let down either. Last year he unveiled Siri on the iPhone 4S, another Apple embarrassment. But at least Siri was clearly label "beta."

Other reports say Forstall has issues internally at Apple too. Last year Bloomberg Businessweek reported that he doesn't get along well with other Apple executives; designer Jony Ive and Bob Mansfiled avoid meeting with Forstall unless Apple's president Tim Cook is there.
"He routinely takes credit for collaborative successes and defelcts blame for mistakes," Bloomberg wrote of Forstall.

But then Forstall has done a lot for Apple. He's been at the company for nearly two decades and joined the company when NeXT was acquired in 1997. He was one of the original architects of the Mac OS X operating system and has headed up iPhone and iPad software since 2006. In that same Bloomberg article he was dubbed "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" under Steve Jobs. He's long been considered Apple's "CEO-in-Waiting."
Is it fair to blame Forstall for everything and are Apple Maps really
that big a deal? Probably not. But some Apple fans are really upset.

A reader wrote to Elmer-DeWitt, "There's no excuse [for Apple Maps].
Quality control on Apple Maps had to have been terrible to not get this
right. Bluntly, Scott Forstall should be fired over this mess."

True to their word, Apple has unveiled the next generation of the
iPhone 5 today – it is now official. We have heard all sorts of rumors
over the past year about this gadget that the Apple fan boys have been
eagerly anticipating. One of the most talked about feature that the
iPhone has indeed come with is LTE. From the first looks, the iPhone 5
is a taller gadget than the previous generations of iPhones. Let us
have a look at the other features and specs of the newest entrant into
the smartphone market.

Build: Thinner but taller
As most people expected, there is a very big change in the shape and
size of the new iPhone compared to its predecessor the iPhone 4S. the
new iPhone is 18% thinner (only 7.6mm) than iPhone 4S and is designed to
have a screen ratio of 16:9. The screen is however the same at 1136 X
640 pixels but has a Retina display at 4.0 inches. Apple has however
improved the display density which now stands at 326 pixels per inch.
Still on build, the iPhone 5 is said to weigh 112 grams, 20% lighter
than the iPhone 4S.
Apple has promised that widescreen movies viewed on the iPhone 5 will
look better and clearer with the 44% increased color saturation
compared to the 4S.
The touch sensors are now incorporated in the display itself. This,
according to Apple, is what makes the screen 30% thinner and will
significantly reduce screen glare.
Applications built for the earlier versions of iPhone will not have a
problem working with the new screen setup. However, the windows will
leave black borders top and bottom on portrait so as not to be scaled or
cropped.

Processor
The iPhone 5 comes with an A6 chip which is up to twice faster than
its predecessor the A5 chip. The graphics on the new iPhone have faster
speeds whilst the chip is 22% smaller than the chips on iPhone 4S.
According to the specs sheet of the iPhone 5, users should expect their
web pages to lead up to 2.1 times faster and music applications to load
up to 1.9 times faster with songs.

Connectivity
It is not a surprise that iPhone 5 comes equipped with 4G LTE,
especially since we have been hearing over the past two weeks of how
Apple has been trying to get its hands on the LTE patents. The new
iPhone 5 will feature 4G LTE capability in addition to the capabilities
of iPhone 4S including GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO and HSPA data networks.

Software
iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6 as expected. Apple did not announce any
unseen or new features of iOS 6 today – but you already probably know
what iOS 6 is all about because the company released the features during
this year’s WWDC in San Francisco. What we know though is that Siri
has been updated and we should soon see it driving cars, there is a
system-wide Facebook integration, ability to conduct FaceTime calls on
cellular networks as well as new maps (Apple dumped Google Maps) that
can provide turn by turn voice directions. Other lesser features in the
iOS 6 include a new App store user interface, an improved music
application, a Game Centre and an improved Safari browser.

The star of the software show though was the mention by Scott
Forstall that iOS 6 provides 200 new features to the iPhone. The new
Maps application was created by Apple after dumping Google Maps and
features turn-by-turn directions (along with info cards for businesses),
a full 3D view that shows terrains, buildings and landmarks and
‘flyover mode’ when looking for an address. More good news to iPhone
users is that iOS 6 will be available to iPhone 3GS and later models and
second and third generation iPads starting September 19th. Note however that not all the features in this newest operating system will be available to all devices.

Hardware features and specs
The camera sensor of the iPhone 5 has been improved from what the
iPhone 4S has although it remains with an 8 MP resolution. The sensor
on the iPhone 5 camera is 25% smaller than the one on iPhone 4S. Still
on the camera, you can use the iPhone 5 to take panorama pictures at
full resolution – Apple showcased a panorama picture at 28 MP, we are
not sure if it was taken with the iPhone 5 though. The front facing
camera has also been upgraded and can now support up to 720p HD video
recording.
iPhone 5 sports three microphones, a smaller speaker, noise
cancelling earpiece and a new lightning connector. The connector is 80%
smaller and has 8 pins. This port is also reversible but there is an
adapter for the older 30 pin port.

Battery
LTE is a very handy feature for data transfer but its greatest
downside is that it is a power drainer. The iPhone supports LTE 4G but
they have come up with a newer battery that can power LTE. The new
battery promises better performance – up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G, 8
hours of browsing on 3G, 8 hours of browsing on LTE and up to 10 hours
of browsing over WiFi. Estimates by Apple also give the battery a life
of 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours for music and up to 225 hours of
standby time on a single charge.

Colors
The iPhone 5 will be available in both black and white. The black
will feature an anodized finish and the white will have a lovely
aluminum back. Apple is drifting away from its traditional singular
design and hue and seems to start offering a variety for its fans.

No NFC
Unfortunately, iPhone 5 does not have Near Field Communication (NFC),
a feature that almost all mid-range and high performance Android
smartphones have been coming equipped with lately. This means that
iPhone users will not be able to use their iPhones to pay for goods,
public transport and services using this technology – for quite a
while. Apple thinks NFC is not secure enough and this deals a big blow
to networks that were trying to convince its users that NFC is the
technology of future payments.

Availability
Preorders of the iPhone 5 will begin on September 14th –
this Friday. For users in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France,
Australia, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong and 22 other countries, the
phone will be available on September 28 off the shelf. Apple says that
the list of countries where the new iPhone will be available will
increase to 100 by the end of the year.

iPhone 5 will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The 16GB will
sell at $199, 32GB at $299 and 64GB at $399 with a 2 year contract.

Getting an iPhone 5 is a major step for any Apple user – but can you
take advantage of the LTE capability on your network? In the US, the
networks that have LTE are Sprint, AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile users
will lose out on this great feature. Good thing though is that if your
career does not have LTE, the iPhone 5 will run on dual band 3.5G HDPA+
which is almost as fast.

We do not know the full features and specs of the newest addition to the
iPhone family yet, but check with us soon because we will update when
we do.

***UPDATED*** With the Huge spike in the value of bit coins (as of writing this it is $1240USD per coin) this post has never been more important. All the free bitcoin links have been updated as well as the miner links.

OK so I have been getting into bitcoins as of late (don't worry I'll explain) and i thought it might be a good idea to share what I've learnt. also at the end i will help you get started by walking you though getting your first bitcoin transaction.

***FYI ALL LINKS HAVE BEEN ROUTED THROUGH AN AD SERVICE I'LL EXPLAIN WHY LATER. JUST CLICK SKIP ADD AT THE TOP RIGHT UNLESS YOU SEE SOMETHING YOU LIKE***

First things first
Be Sure to add this page http://applemakeorbreak.blogspot.ca/2012/08/bitcoin-101.html to your bookmarks

What is a bitcoin?
I could write out a long lengthy description but instead i will show a video from http://www.weusecoins.com/

So bitcoins are a digital currency, cool. Currently bitcoins are worth about $10 USD/CAD but they move quite often. Now the video mentioned mining.

***UPDATE*** Coin prices have spiked and are now worth about $1240 USD/CAD

What is Mining?

What is mining? well mining is using your computer hardware to verify other transactions. Now I don't understand mining very well so instead of explaining it and getting it horribly wrong i will send you to https://www.spendbitcoins.com/bitcoin-mining-guide. Now what i do know about it is that CPU mining is virtually dead and if your not running not running a mac pro or a PC with a decent video card (AMD Radion are the best for this) don't even bother. Even the dual xeon 8 core mac pro's will only get about 25 mhash/s and that is about .01 bit coins every 2 days. I wouldn't bother unless you have a vid card that can do at least 200 mhash/s (these numbers will be explained soon).

***UPDATE*** These days FPGA miners and ASIC miners are the best choice if you have the cash as they use less power than an ipad charger.

What is a hash/s

A hash is a search or "check" so your hash rate is how many checks per second you are doing khash/s is 1,000 checks a second a mhash/s is 1,000,000 checks per second so when i say you need a video card that can do a minimum of 200 mhash/s it means that it has to be capable of 200,000,000 checks per second.

here is an example of what my mac can do

My mac MBP 13" base (late 2011) can use it's CPU to do 1792 khash/s or 1.792 mhash/s with nothing else running. my mac can not do hashing with it's vid card because it is an integrated card and not a dedicated card.
However my old pc with an upgraded vid card (amd 7770) is doing just under 200 mhash/s so it is good for what I'm doing

here is a list of vid cards that have been tested https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison.

Now if this is something you want to get involved in i will have links below with the mining software you'll need

What is a mining pool?

A mining pool is a bunch of people who get together and put all of there hash/s together to do the work faster. Unless you have/planning to build a huge mining rig (4 x 600 mhash/s cards or more) you should join a pool here is a calculator to show you why http://bitcoinx.com/profit leave all the numbers the same except change the hash rate to what ever it is for the card your using we will use 200 mhash/s like in the example above you can change your electricity rate if you know it but mine is .106 per kilowatt so i will use that. the wattage we will use if for the card so in this example it is also 200w. change the time frame to 12 months change the cost of hardware to 0 and the profitability decline to 1 then hit calculate.

Now go back up to where you entered the hash rate. now look under that. at the time of writing this it says

"Average generation time for a block (solo):
1 year, 179 days can vary greatly depending on your luck"

that means that not being in a mining pool you would open one block containing 25 coins every year and a half depending on luck. Now enter 6000000 mhash/s (6 thash/s) and calculate (this is the current hash rate of the pool I'm in)

"Average generation time for a block (solo):
26 minutes, 8 seconds can vary greatly depending on your luck"

the coins (or parts of coins) generated in this way are split among all the contributing members based on how much you contributed!

that is why you want to be in a pool because you make a little less but it is daily.

How can i get started?

1. First you need to get a wallet. it is a program downloaded here: http://www.weusecoins.com/getting-started.php download and install. once the program opens (can take a while) click receive coins at the top then click new address and it will give you your coin address. that address is used to send coins to your wallet. you can have many addresses that all goto one wallet in the same way that you can have many jobs that deposit into one bank. NOW REMEMBER all coins in your wallet are stored on your computer so if something happens to your system the coins will be lost. So BACKUP AND EXPORT your wallet often (from the file menu) to a thumb drive and secure it you would your wallet.

once you have that you can start reviving coins BUT they will not show up in your wallet until all the updates are done (usually 24 hours). Once they are done all payments made will show up all at once. To see the status of your updates hover over the green spinning circle in the bottom right corner.

I will give you a bunch of links at the end of this article that you can get some free coins. normally between 0.01 and 0.00001 of a coin so it's not much but it's free and at least it's something to start.

Earn some coins!

First way is mining you will first need a client to do the work

Mac
DiabloMiner (GPU miner for mac)
RCPminer (CPU miner for mac)

PC
GUIminer (CPU and GPU miner)

Next you will need a pool. I'm in BitCoinCZ (slush's pool) feel free to use any of them but the settings I'll be telling only work for this one.

To use BitCoinCZ goto there site https://mining.bitcoin.cz and signup for an account. After you confirm your account you will be asked to setup a worker. you can have many different workers. I have one for each system i use it on.

The info you will need for the mining software is:

The host name or IP for this pool it is: http://api.bitcoin.cz
The Port for this pool (and most) it is: 8332
The Miner User name this is the worker you just setup NOT THE ACCOUNT
The Miner Password again the one for the worker NOT THE ACCOUNT

And your done. just tell the program to auto start the miner when you open it.

***VERY IMPORTANT***
Be sure to keep your system ventilated, mining will cause your system to work very hard and you could cause damage if it is not properly cooled.

OK now for some freebies

Here are some links that give free coins. I will break them into category and will update them as they stop working or new ones come up. you may want to bookmark my page so you have an updated list
This is the site all of my URL's have been going through. I'm not sure how much they pay yet but if you have a website with no advertising (like this one) they are great

Final Thoughts

Some of the sites only give out a limited amount of coins each day so hit em early if you can. also when a site runs out some times it can be a few days before they begin giving coins away again.

There are more sites than this that give out coins but I will not include anything that makes you register an account OR enter a phone number. I hate spam and I'm sure you do to. that having been said if you find one not on this list leave a comment and leave me the URL.

I will be checking the sites to see if they go down but if you notice before I do leave a comment and let me know

We have new Mac Pro's, Mac Air's, and a very convoluted MacBook Pro.

I'm going to start by saying i work at a Canadian Educational Apple authorized Reseller so the prices are canadian educational.

So let's break them down and compare old to new! Starting with the air

The Air almost didn't change
- Both 11" airs went from a 1.6GGHz dual core to a 1.7GHz and the 13" went from 1.7GHz to 1.8GHz
- The bottom LvL 11" went from 2GB of ram to 4GB of ram
- the all changed video cards from the intel HD 3000 to the Intel HD 4000
- And they all got Turbo boost for the processor wich i can assume is a go baby go button for when you need to render a movie quickly or something else along that line. I do warn that if it is a go baby go button that won should not leave it on for the risk that won could burn out your processor. The turbo boost will take the 11" airs to 2.6GHz and the 13" to 2.8Ghz
- The price got weird to, the 11" is $979* ($30 more) and $1079* ($70 less).
- 13" $1179* ($70 less) and $1479* ($70 less)

I am looking for someone to make a 5-20 sec intro for my YouTube channel nothing to complex. If your interested in making one for me this is what I'm looking for

5-20 sec long
Needs to have something to do with apple
colorfully!
could reference how too's, hardware tear downs, and unboxings

You may put a "intro designed by" in the video so long as it is only at the end of the video and so long as it only takes up the bottom 1/3rd of the screen

I will also be including links to the designer in every video that i use it

you can send questions or complected video's to my EMAIL
HOW TO: Do a Clean install of Lion Using the recovery partition

So i finally got the video uploaded so here is my How To Video for installing Mac OSX 10.7 on a MBP early 2011, This will work on any system that currently has lion on it.

All
you need to do this is a system that already has 10.7 on it because as
part of your original install it created a recovery partition and that
is what we will be using.

REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR DATA!
Following this tutorial will wipe your hard drive clean and you will
loose all your data YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

an Imac G5 (ya i know right)
a MacBook pro 15" late 2007
and a MacBook Pro 17" late 2007

so my job is to make the iMac work and make at least one MBP of the 2 work... the iMac is only booting about 1 in 20 attempts but works great while it is running. as for the MBP's they have both been scavenged for parts but between the 2 i think i have one full system. The 13" has a broken screen and is missing it's ram and HDD but the 17" has only it's HDD and Super drive missing. So the plan is to take superdrive out of the 13" and see if i got a working system. Should have a video of my testing software in action on the iMac and then we get into the MBP.
