Digital News Report – Last Night film director Martin Scorsese accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globe Awards. The director, screenwriter, producer and actor said he wished he could write music but he can’t. Scorsese joked and went on to say he would continue to make movies.

Last night there was a lot of talk about “Shutter Island” (see video below), a Martin Scorsese film staring Leonardo DiCaprio as U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels.

In 1954 the Marshal and his assistant are sent to a hospital for the criminally insane on an island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate a report of an escaped prisoner.

The plot thickens when a hurricane hits the island and a prison riot ensues.

The movie was supposed to be released last year but was held off until February 19, 2010.

Some music in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Due to a lack of funding, the Baltimore Symphony is not presenting its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial concert in conjunction with the State of Maryland, a considerable loss to the community. If all goes well, the event will return next year. Meanwhile, here are a couple of MLK-related performances around the area worth catching.
On Monday at Baltimore's An die Musik, Opus Nine, the imaginative young chamber ensemble that features several Peabody Conservatory alumni, will give matinee and evening performances of an appealing program that aims "to celebrate the vitality of [Dr. King's] dream." The lineup includes John Williams' "Air and Simple Gifts" (composed for the Obama inauguration) and Gershwin's "Lullaby" for string quartet, as well as works by Duke Ellington, Darius Milhaud and Ricky Ian Gordon.
On Tuesday at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, the
Washington Symphonic Brass will perform Joseph Schwantner's "New Morning for the World," an affecting work that incorporates selections from King's writings (Bill Ray will be the narrator). Music by Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington and Wynton Marsalis will also be played.
Here's my own humble contribution to the MLK holiday -- a live performance by legendary contralto Marian Anderson from 1939 (the same year of her triumphant concert at the Lincoln Memorial after being barred from Constitution Hall). Something about the spiritual "Deep River" seems particularly appropriate on this occasion, especially the line "That promised land where all is peace," and it would be impossible to surpass the eloquence Miss Anderson achieves here:

In a Chaotic Capital, Haitians Anxious for U.S. Troops.

The once seemingly immovable white pillars of Haiti's presidential palace are strewn across the streets. The central towers of what locals nicknamed the "Little White House" have crumbled like a kicked-in sand castle, one of the more dramatic casualties in the wake of the Jan. 12 earthquake. It is symbolic of the power of the Haitian state, which is itself in ruins. The absence of any effective authority in the five days since the tremor has led hungry and desperate residents to loot and fight over the crumbs to survive. On Monday, the U.S. is sending troops in to help restore order — and far from resenting the intervention, many Haitians are anxious for the American colossus to arrive quickly and to completely take over the running of their country.
"We want American soldiers to be swarming all over this place," says Joel Auguste, 33, a barber who is staying in a refugee camp thrown up in the national soccer stadium. "They shouldn't give one dollar of aid to my politicians because they will just steal it. Let the white man come and hand it out." Auguste once lived in the U.S. himself, selling tickets at Madison Square Garden. While living in America, he had the misfortune of being caught up in Hurricane Katrina. But he says the much criticized U.S. response to that catastrophe is practically a role model compared to the Haitian government's collapse now. "They evacuated me straight out of Alabama," he recalls of the 2005 hurricane. "Here it is every man for himself. There are escaped criminals all over the place and people are trying to rob whatever you have."

Such calls for Washington to take the direct reins of Haiti — a state founded in 1804 after the world's first successful black slave revolution — may seem bizarre. But the opinions are loudly voiced by residents scavenging for supplies in the postapocalyptic Port-au-Prince. "Haiti is part of America," says English teacher Franz Dejean, whose home was reduced to dust. "We need Obama to take over." Dejean, like many Haitians, is encouraged by a country being run by its first black President. "He seems to be a good person inside. It is not about color. It is about what you feel."

No one feels safe in Port-au-Prince now. In downtown streets, crowds often rush into any store or building that looks like it might have supplies. In most cases, people are simply looking for food and drink; the looters calmly walk away with crates of Coca-Cola or packs of rice on their shoulders. But in the commercial center, which looks like it has been flattened by an atomic bomb, people shout and shove over cell phones and stereo systems that they haul out of stores. In some parts of town, Haiti's murderous gangs have returned to haunt the streets and it is no longer safe to be outside after dusk.

Some of the Haitian police force returned to patrol the streets Saturday, hitting looters with tear gas and gunshots. That has done little to deter the ransacking of establishments and warehouses. There is also sporadic violence among the hungry and desperate. In a street in the shattered upper-class neighborhood of Pétionville, the fresh corpse of a young man lay with a machete wound in his head. Almost nonchalantly, onlookers said he was murdered in a street brawl. The countless dead and dying as a result of the earthquake have inured residents of this city to something as petty as homicide.

Not everyone, of course, is in favor of the Americans arriving to save the day. U.S. military interventions in Haiti in 1994 and 2004 were criticized by many as a superpower meddling in a poor country's politics. One wild rumor circulating in the rubble-ridden streets on Sunday was that the earthquake was really a CIA plot to give the U.S. an excuse to take over. But most say the troops themselves at least will be a welcome antidote to the lawlessness.

There is little clear, however, about what the full objective of the U.S. military mission will be. American officials seem unsure about even how many troops will go in, with statements ranging from 3,000 to 10,000. With the acquiescence of the Haitian President, the U.S. armed forces have been running the Port-au-Prince airport since Friday. But it is still unsure how far into the disaster-zone capital the new troops will go or what exactly they will be allowed to do.

Like many on the street, Auguste thinks people will respect orders given out by the American soldiers. But he says he expects the troops to hit back if things get out of hand. "They need to make people line up for food and wait their turn and not steal it from other people," he says. "If people get in their face and start shouting at them in some language that they don't understand then, of course, they are going to shoot."

Ukrainian Presidential Election Set for Runoff

KIEV - Viktor Yanukovych, and the target of defamation Portokalli Revolution, marked a return to the Ukrainian presidential election, returns showed on Monday showed him leading the field of 18 candidates in the first round but was forced to avoid a second round against the champions of the Intifada in 2004, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The same count by the Central Election Commission put Ms. Tymoshenko solidly in second place, with 24.7% of the vote.

Official results will be released by the commission in the next 10 days. But there was no doubt that the incumbent premier, Ms. Tymoshenko, and Mr. Yanukovych, who was prime minister 2002-2004 and again 2006-2007, will enter the two-person runoff on Feb. 7.

Uncertified returns from four-fifths of Sunday's voters gave 35.8% of the vote to Mr. Yanukovych, the pro-Russian politician whose tainted victory in the previous race was overturned by Ukraine's Supreme Court after massive street protests over allegations of fraud.

"Yanukovych's hand will never be placed on the Bible to take the presidential oath," she declared." She called on supporters of "democratic" candidates to unite behind her.

Serhiy Tihipko, a former central banker, emerged as a new force in Ukrainian politics, finishing third Sunday with 13% of the preliminary vote count, according to exit polls, and securing the strongest negotiating position as the runoff candidates jockey for support. He is a former adviser to both Mr. Yanukovych and Ms. Tymoshenko, and has expressed interest in working as prime minister under either.

About two-thirds of the electorate voted Sunday, somewhat lower than in 2004.

"In the '90s, we voted against Communism and in 2004 against criminal politicians, in the hope that things would change," complained Elyzaveta Svetlenko, a Kiev resident who stayed home. "Now there is no one to vote for. They're all corrupt and controlled by businessmen."

Sunday's election brought charges of falsifications, but none as serious as those that marred the 2004 vote.

Militants Launch Bold Attack in Central Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan - The militants launched a brazen attack and strong in central Kabul on Monday morning, with high explosions and gunfire echoing across the city. The Taliban said its fighters carried out the attack.

Police and paramilitary officers at the scene said the onslaught began with an initial suicide bombing in the downtown area which includes the Justice Ministry, the Central Bank, the presidential palace and the Serena Hotel favored by Westerners. Hotel residents took cover in a basement as the fighting swirled above them, according to a BBC reporter at the hotel.

There were no immediate independent estimates of casualties, which some reports said appeared to be light. But the Taliban claimed to have killed 40 people.

Militants have become increasingly bold in penetrating the capital as their campaign broadens in many parts of Afghanistan, prompting President Obama to promise 30,000 additional American troops to reinforce the international coalition.

“The fighters and the suicide bombers are now in the Afghan National Bank , the Justice Ministry, and other official departments,” he said almost three hours after the fighting started. “Fighting is still going on but our men are still alive,” he said, claiming that 40 government officials had been killed. By noon, witnesses said, the fighting seemed to be over, save for scattered gunfire.

The attack seemed designed to undermine the already frayed authority of the Karzai government even as it seeks to move against the militants politically.The presidential spokesman, Waheed Omar, said Sunday that the government will soon unveil a major new plan offering jobs, security, education and other social benefits to Taliban followers who defect.

The plan, in the final stages of preparation, will go beyond the government’s previous offers to the Taliban, Mr. Omer said at a news conference. “The mistakes we have committed before have been considered in developing this new plan,” he said. “We have not done enough.”

He was invited to speak March 14, 1968, at what was then Grosse Pointe High School by a local fair-housing advocacy group. An estimated 2,700 people filled the gym.In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday, let's recall the civil rights leader's last trip to the state.

Three weeks before he was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., King delivered his speech "The Other America" in Grosse Pointe.

The school board's decision to host King was controversial and part of the deal was that the Grosse Pointe Human Relations Council take out a $1-million insurance policy to protect against any damage to school property if the event turned violent.

Tensions were so high in the community that a local police chief sat on King's lap in the car on the way to the school to shield him from danger.

Police checked the gym for bombs hours before King's speech, and five dozen officers from neighboring communities were on hand in case the evening turned ugly.

Miami’s DJ Seasunz believed to have killed girlfriend Jaclyn Torrealba.

Twitter is buzzing with rumors that popular Miami club dj DJ Seasunz has surrendered to police in the beating death of 18-year-old girlfriend Jaclyn Torrealba.
On Twitter and Facebook, users began tweeting and re-tweeting a plea for Jaclyn’s return:
18 year old Jaclyn Torrealba was last seen at Space Night Club on October 11 at 2am… (number redacted)
According to the Miami Herald, a man walked into a police station Sunday night, lead police to a body in his car and turned himself in to authorities for the murder. While the victim has not been publicly identified, Twitter users and commenters on the article report confirmation from Torrealba’s family that she is the victim in this case.
No comments have yet been made on DJ Seasunz’s Facebook page, and there is no official word that Torrealba has died, but many Miami locals are posting memorial tweets and condolences to the Torrealba family. We will update with details as they become available.

Elinor Ostrom and Oliver E. Williamson Win Nobel in Economic Science.

The Nobel in Economic Science was awarded to Elinor Ostrom, the first woman to receive the prize, and to Oliver E. Williamson on Monday.

They share the prize for their separate work on economic governance, organization, cooperation, relationships and nonmarket institutions.

Both professors teach at American public institutions: Ms. Ostrom at Indiana University, Bloomington, and Mr. Williamson at the University of California, Berkeley.

Ms. Ostrom’s work focuses on the commons, such as how pools of users manage natural resources as common property. The traditional view is that common ownership results in excessive exploitation of resources — the so-called tragedy of the commons that occurs when fishermen overfish a common pond, for example. The proposed solution is usually to make users bear the external costs of their utilization by privatizing the resource or imposing government regulations such as taxes or quotas.

Ms. Ostrom’s empirical research has shown that this explanation is “overly simplistic,” the prize committee says: There are many cases around the world in which common property is “surprisingly well-managed.” In these cases commons users “create and enforce rules that mitigate overexploitation” without having to resort to privatization and government regulation (which can both pose their own practical difficulties).

The grasslands in the interior of Asia — shared for centuries in traditional group-based governance — are one such example. They appeared to fare better under group-based systems than under either socialism or privatization.

Ms. Ostrom received her Ph.D. in political science at U.C.L.A., and said in a phone interview during the prize committee’s announcement that she considers herself a political economist. She said she hopes her work may guide policy on climate change.

Mr. Williamson’s work focuses on the boundaries of the firm, and the reasons for economic activity inside of firms: Why is there so much vertical integration in the marketplace? Why don’t we all just work for ourselves and sign contracts with each other instead of working together inside of a big company?

His work argues that “hierarchical organizations sometimes dominate markets because they provide a cheaper way to resolve conflicts,” the committee writes. When two employees quarrel about how best to use resources, a chain of command within the firm — usually leading back to a single chief executive — makes the decision about who is right. In contrast, in the markets, both parties would have to keep negotiating until they reach an agreement of some sort, which takes time and money.

Such a firm-based hierarchy is less necessary, however, if the two parties can easily achieve an enforceable contract, or find new trading partners.

Mr. Williamson was unavailable during the prize committee’s announcement in Sweden.

When asked whether the events of the global credit crisis factored into their choice of prize recipients, a committee official said that the prize is typically not given based upon events of the past year, but rather a body of work.

Andrews' lawyers began making calls and sending e-mails for websites to pull the video. They issued a public statement that websites or anyone found to be trafficking in the video or images from it could face legal action.

The warning only seemed to exacerbate the issue. It seemed that the entire world was attempting to see Erin Andrews naked. News that viruses were being attached to pictures and video links purporting to have the Erin Andrews peeping tom video.

It was also discerned that the video was actually a collection of different videos, perhaps as many as six or seven. Rumors began to spread that it was an inside job and ESPN announced an internal investigation into the allegations.

Hurricane Fred quickly strengthens to a Category 2 storm over the Atlantic Ocean.

Hurricane Fred has quickly strengthened to a Category 2 storm in the Atlantic and forecasters say it could become a major hurricane later in the day.
Fred’s maximum sustained winds have increased to near 105 mph (165 kph) early Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Fred could become a Category 3 storm later Wednesday but is expected to start weakening Thursday.
Fred is centered about 500 miles (805 kilometers) west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and moving west-northwest near 13 mph (20 kph).
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Linda is drifting slowly far out over the Pacific with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph (100 kph).

A new Google Monopoly that won't incite regulators.

Marketing offline products in an increasingly digital world can be a difficult task. But gaming company Hasbro is going global to get the word out about its new version of Monopoly.
Starting tomorrow, Hasbro is launching a worldwide game of Monopoly online using Google Maps.
Users begin with $3 million of Monopoly cash in hand and can digitally purchase real city blocks around the world. They can then build skyscrapers, prisons or stadiums and begin collecting rent. Despite what you think about the game of Monopoly, this is a great move for Hasbro.
Combatting the creeping growth of digital games and gamer bias toward less competitive games like Catan, companies like Hasbro have their work cut out for them.
The interactive version of Monopoly is scheduled to last for four weeks and has been launched to promote the new City Edition of the game.
According to the Monopoly City Streets' website:
"The goal is simple. Play to beat your friends and the world to become the richest property magnate in existence."
Beyond simply being an interesting use of Google Maps, if the game catches on, there are opportunities for Hasbro to extend its brand exponentially. If the game is done well, it could update the franchise for the digital age and create new product outlets for Hasbro.
In addition to playing and purchasing streets and towns they know, players can have a say in the way the game is run. At some point today, blog readers can start suggesting new building ideas for the digital game.
But even if the game doesn't take off on a longterm basis, it has a lot of potential to increase sales. After restructuring in 2000, Hasbro has seen sales numbers jump by updating its classic games in recent years. Last month Hasbro created a live version of Candy Land on San Francisco's famously crooked Lombard Street and the company is also benefitting from its newly revamped G.I. Joe line.
Meanwhile, some press members have already gotten early access to the game and have started gobbling up real estate, meaning that some of the best pieces of earth will be purchased even before they go on sale to the general public. Just like in real life!
Monopoly also fails with many adults because it requires almost no strategy. The only meaningful question in the game is: To buy or not to buy?

Teenagers should know that the President is saying that the country needs each kid to succeed because each is endowed with talents that can benefit our country. So many times adults don't take teenagers seriously. But not today!
Adults sometimes treat teenagers like they don't know much. But here is the president of our country calling upon the kids and teenagers of our nation to develop their skills and ideas because what they have to offer isvaluable.
Some teens might be thinking that this applies to others but not to them. They may have lost their self confidence. Maybe their families have kind of put them down. Or maybe no one ever asks their opinions. But teens should remember that just because they might feel incapable at times doesn't mean that they are incapable.
Experts in mental health understand that each person has something unique and lovely and useful to offer in this world. Sitting at home won't help one do this. Engaging in life through school and other activities is key. This is what President Obama is talking about.
If teenagers are feeling unmotivated, they could ask themselves, is there something they really would like to do but they are afraid that others will make fun of them, or are afraid that they will look stupid?
President Obama talks about the fact that it takes awhile to learn how to do things. Nobody is born an expert. School years are the time to make mistakes, everyone does. But those who succeed and become confident are those who try anyway.
Look at President Obama. Many thought an African American would never be President. But he believed that he could and he did not give up. This is an example of success worth following.

King Brothers, Released From Prison After Murdering Father As Children, Break Silence (VIDEO).

The King brothers, then 12 and 13-years-old, were convicted nearly a decade ago as adults of beating their father to death with a baseball bat while he slept. While their motives are unclear, speculation is that they were under the influence of their neighbor, a convicted sex offender. He was initially acquitted but then convicted of being an accessory after the fact.
The brothers, now released from prison, are speaking out about their life before and after incarceration in an interviews with NBC.

LSU defeats Washington 31-23 in season opener.

LSU 31, Washington 16, 4Q, 1:54

LSU came through offensively with its best drive of the night to put the game away. Jordan Jefferson hit Brandon LaFell with a 5-yard scoring pass set up by some nice runs by Keiland Williams and a big pass to Terrance Toliver.

LSU really just needed a couple of first downs to run the clock out, but Williams ripped off a couple of 9-yard runs and then had a big one down to the 5.

LSU Coach Les Miles said he would be happy with any kind of victory. It's obvious LSU has some things to work on.

LSU 24, Washington 16, 4Q

LSU is hanging on. The Tigers' defense can't get off the field and Washington just kicked another field goal with about five minutes left.

The last two offensive possessions have resulted in three-and-outs. Charles Scott, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards last year, has disappeared. LSU has never established any offensive rhythm in the game. They really need a first down on this next possession, because Washington has momentum.

Washington has run 75 plays and LSU only 42..

LSU 24, Washington 13, 5:50, 3Q
Jefferson to Tolliver again for a touchdown. The Tigers got a nioce drive going and Jordan Jefferson kept it alive with a nice stretch on third and 1 to get a first down. On the next play Jefferson faked a run to the left and threw to Toliver, who faked out safety
Greg Walker for a 44-yard scoring play.

The Tigers have the momentum back. But the defense needs to get some stops., Washington has converted eight of 11 third-down tries.

LSU 17, Washington 13, halftime
LSU had a chance to go into halftime with the momentum but allowed the Huskies to drive from deep in their own territory to a 38-yard field goal on the last play of the half.

The LSU defense is getting shredded - 296 yards at the half. The Huskies have converted several third down plays and Jake Locker hit a big pass to set up the field goal. The yardage totals are far in the Huskies favor and at times LSU has looked confused on both sides of the ball.

The Tigers needs to make some defensive adjustments in the second half. Washington running backs at times have wide open field to run to and are ripping off 10-yard runs. LSU has made some plays, some tackles for losses, but they haven't really stopped Washington the whole first half. The two turnovers are the difference in the game. Without them, LSU would be trailing.

It doesn't look to me like the LSU defensive line is any better than last year's. LSU has allowed 113 yards rushing in the first half. In fact, it looks decidedly worse. The LSU offensive line hasn't been all that impressive either. LSU had 165 total yards.

LSU 17, Washington 10, 1:15 2Q

LSU finally busted loose. Jordan Jefferson connected for a 45-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Toliver, who took advantage of a missed tackle. Of course, fans watching on TV missed the first half of the play because ESPN cut away to another one of its annoying updates.

That's a boost for LSU but the Tigers so far have been disappointing.

LSU 10, Washington 10, 2Q

LSU dodged a bullet by recovering a fumble at the LSU 5-yard line but couldn't move. Washington got a good punt rerturn off a short kick and set up camp at the Tiger 24-yard line but the defense came up with a stop and forced a 34-yard field goal by Erik Folk.

LSU has not been impressive defensively and aside from the first drive the offense has looked disheveled. LSU would be in a hole without the two turnovers.

Washington 7, LSU 0, 1Q

LSU didn't look very impressive on its first defensive series, getting burned badly on a blitz which went for a 50-yard play. That set up a 17-yard scoring pass from Jake Locker to freshman wide receiver James Johnson.

So far, the effort hs been characterized by missed tackles. And it looked like the Tigers blitzed seven guys on a third-and-12 play. There was no one in the secondary to make a tackle and Patrick Peterson had to come from the other side to save the touchdown, at least for the time being.

LSU 10, Washington 7, 5:49 1Q

Well the LSU defense has made amends quickly. Jacob Cutrera batted a pass by Jake Locker into the air, intercepted it and returned the ball 29 yards for a touchdown. Cutrera is a guy who missed a large part of camp and was looking like a guy who might not play much in the game.
He's also one of the least likely players to make an interception.

Washington 7, LSU 3, 6:02 1Q

The offense looked pretty good for a while but a critical penalty down on the goal line killed the Tigers' chance to tie the score. It looked like half the team moved forward and the other half stayed put in what turned out to be a false start. Jordan Jefferson threw incomplete on third down from the 7 and his pass was nowhere near receiver Terrance Toliver.

What made it worse is LSU called a timeout and promptly went out and fouled it up. Left tackle Ciron Black was visibly upset at Jefferson. Not sure why.

It's a bad omen letting a team get momentum going at home.
