Students who have been nominated are then ranked by a panel of senior academics and they will make the final selection. These scholarships will be awarded to those students who have been ranked the highest based on academic merit and potential. The successful candidate will be selected by the Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Award Benefits

In addition to a full tuition fee waiver from Cardiff University the awardee will receive £10,000, which is intended as a contribution towards general maintenance costs (accommodation, travel, subsistence, etc) while in the UK. This will be paid in instalments directly to the grantee upon arrival in the UK. Limited sickness and accident benefit coverage (typically not needed with free access to the NHS) is also provided.

All grantees in the UK attend a 3-day orientation program on arrival in September, a 5-day Fulbright Forum in January and a farewell event, the Fulbright 'End-cap'. The Commission has arranged a number of memberships for grantees during their stay and will assign a British alumna/us as a mentor.

Selection Criteria

Minimum eligibility for this award category:

US citizen (resident anywhere but the UK)

Rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence

Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK

Interest in the peoples and cultures of the UK

Clear set of objectives for the Fulbright year

Commitment to the host community through volunteer and extra-curricular activity.

Candidates need not be recent graduates, and financial need is not a factor in the selection process. The program seeks the widest possible variety of fields and career goals among applicants, including the arts and professional studies in addition to traditional academic disciplines. Preference will be given to those who do not have extensive experience in the UK.

In making these awards the Commission is looking not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to work for the betterment of the home and host countries both during and after studies.

Applying

The online application is facilitated by IIE and is used by Fulbright Commissions worldwide. Each Commission sets its own policies and procedures with country-specific information for making an application for a Fulbright Award in their country. You will be able to log in and out of your application account and will not be required to complete the application in one sitting.

It is imperative that you read the Terms and Conditions on this website before submitting your application. Applicants should review all available US Award categories and the FAQs before submitting an application. Applicants are also encouraged to register to the Fulbright Commission’s website to receive updates from the Commission.

Successful applicants will be invited for telephone interviews on the date(s) listed below. Interviews will be held on the indicated date(s) only and may not be rescheduled.

Applicants are solely responsible for applying and gaining admission to Cardiff University. Fulbright proposals, however, must receive endorsement from Cardiff University, and the Commission will seek this final confirmation on behalf of successful applicants.

Weekly mentoring sessions focused on decision making, skill building and career development prepare the students for life after school.
The Likoni Scholarship Fund (LSF) works to increase the number of Likoni students who are able to attend and complete secondary school, by providing scholarships to dedicated students from families that can’t afford school fees.

In Likoni, Kenya unemployment is high, wages are low and Secondary education is expensive, costing an average of 27,000 Kenyan Shillings, or $400, per student per year. Few Likoni families can afford these fees, so most students end their education after primary school, when they are about 14 years of age. With greater access to education, more Likoni students will become qualified for good jobs and university admission.

Number of Scholarships
In its first year, 2007, Likoni Scholarship Fund sponsored seven students, but will grow to 10times the original size to sponsor 70 students in 2011.

Scholarship Worth
The exact amount is determined by the cost of each school and the amount each family is able to contribute. The scholarships include fees, uniforms, books, bags, shoes, lunch for day students or boarding fees for boarders, school trips, and weekly mentoring.

Selection Criteria
The foundation selects Secondary students from 8th grade classes at Likoni’s public primary schools and partner with families to pay educational expenses. Every scholarship is need-based.
Since 2002, public primary education in Kenya has been paid for by the government and is available at a relatively low cost to families. However, public primary schools have become disgracefully overcrowded, often accommodating 60 children per classroom. The foundation sponsors the children of Twaayf Children’s Home to attend St Kevin’s Hill Academy, Likoni’s top primary academy, to ensure that they receive the best quality education.

About the Hatua Likoni
Hatua Likoni is a community based development NGO dedicated to alleviating under-education and poverty among youth in Likoni, Kenya. Through education, mentoring and career guidance, Hatua Likoni fosters personal and professional development among young people, while promoting economic development and civil society within Likoni.
The Likoni Library will offer Likoni students a quiet, well-resourced learning and study environment. Even though the library is still in its final phases of development, the building is already crowded every evening with students eager to make use of this place to study. Likoni students are hungry for a better learning
environment
As of April 2010, there are five full-time and two dozen part-time scholarship students. Based on Sankofa’s experiences, most students in Ghana are struggling to make payments. Therefore, to expand the Sankofa Scholarship Program and provide financial relief for more students, in 2010, Sankofa established The Sankofa National Scholarship Program (SNSP), under Sankofa International Youth Ghana, a NGO based in Ghana. Under the SNSP, individuals can register to win full scholarships at the senior secondary, vocational, technical, and tertiary school levels.
