If you have a large backlink increase in a short time, you may not actually benefit from it, you may even rank worse than you started with! The question is, why would Google do such a thing?

Well their reason for it seems to be that they want to stop un-natural link building, so they can keep their Search Engine rankings as natural as possible. An interesting comment was seen on Digital Point Forums. The poster said that this isn’t really a valid reason because this is what happens naturally - Someone publishes great content and then everyone links to it (A huge increase of backlinks) and then it suddenly dies off. Of course this can’t be classed as un-natural, can it?

Another worrying point is that if you’re in a market with a lot of competitors and you’re doing well, then obviously the tough competition is going to try to knock you back, and some may delibrately do a lot of link building for you so that you get penalized! That seems very unfair on you, but it just shows how possible it is with Googles apparent “Natural” Search Engine Results.

In conclusion, try to build links slowly and not all at once, or you could be punished by Google. This is only a short post, but it covers a short issue.

Build quality pages on your website. If people see interesting content that they want to see, you’ll probably find that people link to your content themselves, meaning the job of link building is much easier for you.
Once you’ve published another page, keep building links to each individual page too and make sure that that individual page ranks. You don’t just want your homepage to rank well, you should want all of your pages to do well. You’ll get more traffic that way.
