This is what you paint when you have not decided what to paint at the end of the day. I had just studied using Dreama's transparent oils and was attracted to anything white that I could put Indian Yellow under as the base for the block-in. So even though I have the apple, broken spoon and the cookie in the painting, they only have bit parts and the cup is the star. This is my entry to Paint Party Friday. My first attempt at the new tangle by Molly Hollibaugh.

I found this very difficult, because I didn't have my "S's" lined up.

I did like doing it on a black Zentangle Tile, however. It saved time in the fill areas.

I used "Purk" and "Footlites" & "Sannibelle" in addition.

Still very much a struggle! I was ready to graph the page out to do this, but that goes against the whole idea of Zentangle. I used "Mooka" as well.

Well, I tried the tips given by Cris@TangledUpInArt. They were very helpful. But I still am not satisfied. I can see a lot more practice needed on this tangle! I did it tonight, because I am having my mom come for a visit starting May 23rd. I want to devote all my attention to her, since we only see each other about once a year. Mom is 91 years young! So I will be spending all my time for awhile just visiting with her, my children and grandchildren. This photo was a little askew, so I didn't crop it down all the way. The actual cut will be at the edges you see above at the outer edge of the design. I used a stack design with tangles.

This week is flying by. I finally decided what I wanted to do for the Daily Paintworks "Yellow" challenge.

I had thought of sunrise, bananas,lemons, koi, and finally realized that it was all relative. In this painting, I have a cool yellow(lemon) but added a halo of red. There are sections in the design that are hot colors next to the cool yellow. With the yellow challenge, it meant "heat" to me, so I used other colors to get the heat. In painting and life, a color is always seen in relationship to the other colors around it. So I think I gave you some "heat" here with my yellow, orange, fuchsia and red combo. Drawn with permanent marker and colored with inks, markers and paint pens. There is a little color distortion, as my oranges are not quite this bright, but trying to change them just messes up the rest of the colors. I am adding this to Jennifer Mclean's The Artist Playroom challenge for this week as some of my favorite things...bright colors, and tangles! Plus Happy Birthday Jennifer!

I immediately thought of strawberry shortcake because this Sunday is Mother's Day and my Mom's favorite dessert is good old fashioned strawberry shortcake made with real biscuits,not the ones in a can! Real strawberries and real whipped cream. Yum! I enjoyed making the drawing a little abstracted and used a tangle pattern for the tablecloth. I would also like to say "Hello!" to all my Paint Party Friday friends and add this to this Friday's party. Happy PPF. This week, Carol Marine threw a curve ball! Her prompt is to go to the link for interior rooms of the White House and pick a scene using any angle of the room you wish. Well, the phrase about using "any angle" is what intrigued me. So I walked through the lovely, historical but very impersonal and cold,in feeling,rooms that are open to the public. I finally found a room with some colors I love,greens,rose and blue. I picked that room but couldn't decide how to paint it until I went at an odd angle. It included the rosy arm chair, the flower arrangement, a lamp with the light on and a carpet. No political comment intended. That's it! I am way late for Paint Party Friday this week! A lot of "stuff" going on today since 5AM! All week for that matter! I hope you all have a good weekend and check all the artists websites to see what they accomplished this week. Happy PPF!

The inspiration for this painting is from a photograph of a statue in Florence, Italy taken by Lee A Brown and offered for the April challenge on his website called "A Day Not Wasted". I am hoping that even though I just posted, that this got in just under the wire! My artist friend Judy and her husband just got back from Arizona. Judy is a pastel and watercolor artist. So when she is in town I try to do at least one pastel painting a week. We will be joining Bonnie Paruch for a "Flowers and Gardens of Door County" workshop in August at The Clearing Folk School. It is a great week of all day painting, and eating fabulous home cooked meals with 18 painters,18 woodworkers, and 18 poets! We have a party on Friday night to show and tell all our works accomplished for that week.

For some reason on days when I don't have anything in particular in mind to paint, pears and apples come to mind. Is that like com"pear"ing apples and oranges?! I decided on some nice plump pears. And to give them extra humph, I decided they are French pears, la-di-da!

On the last day of the Dreama Tolle Perry workshop, the artists were either finishing up paintings started in the four previous days or starting new ones. I decided to paint some pansies that were on the table set for us with coffee and fresh baked goods from Cary Jurrians,the owner of the Whidbey Island Fine Art School, and a terrific baker. I love Spring flowers and now that I am home in Illinois have put out several containers of these colorful flowers.

Today I did this painting for my entry into Ria Hills and Pamela White's "Shoot and Paint" challenge for the month of April. Ria did a wonderful painting of her latte. The challenge is paint your mug or cup with your coffee or tea, or even your O.J., if that is what you drink in the morning. I really enjoy my one cup of Folgers 100% Colombian coffee every morning in my favorite polka-dotted coffee mug. Be sure to visit Ria's blog to see the other entries.

This weeks Daily Paintworks Challenge is called "The Up-close Animal Challenge" offered by Taryn Day. Taryn did a sheep's head. I decided I would also do a sheep, but a different one which I again searched for my reference on Wet Canvas in their image library. For some reason I was spooked by the look of the sheep's eyes!? So instead of running away as fast as possible, I just stared him down. And guess what he said to me "How are Ewe?" in a very soothing and soft voice.

This is my April entry into the Virtual Paintout. This month we are walking through Gdansk, Poland. This is The Church of Saint Mary. The skyline of the cathedral and the adjacent buildings silhouetted in a stormy sky was what attracted my attention. Day Four Round-about Painting

8" H x 8"W Round-About Art from Dreama's 4th day.

On the 4th day of Dreama's workshop she did a beautiful sunflower demo, but instead of doing it chunky style, she finished it quickly and then said we were going to have some fun! She gave us each a picture of a sunflower, or a waterlily or a cupcake. If there was a "U" on our printout, we had to turn our reference upside down at our easels. Next she told us we were going to start our drawing, but that at about 5 or 7 minutes she was going to say "NEXT!" and we were to move to the next easel and start painting on that persons painting! Well, after about 8 moves to the next easel, the paintings were pretty much finished. Lo and behold, they all came out pretty darn good. This painting is the result of 8 different people painting on my canvas. I wish I had had all of them sign the back. I think I will send it to them and ask them to give me their names if they are one of the 18 painters who painted on mine. Since only about 8 people painted on it, it will be interesting to see who they were. I will write their names on the back. Okay, I found out who painted this painting in the "musical easels"! It was Barb, McClure, Faye Truman Castle, Jo Ann Cater,Sue Darius, Christine ?, Laura Gable, Bente Hanson, Karri Street & David Street. Thank you guys!

At the end of that day, Dreama had us put our names on a piece of paper and then drew from the jar to see who would have the opportunity to buy her original painting of the sunflower in the lottery. Guess what!? I won and here is Dreama's original 8" x 8' painting. You can see the beautiful pure/clean colors she achieves with her painting style.

The Daily Paintworks challenge this week is a "reclining" figure. I didn't have a photo of a reclining figure, so I used one of the images on Wet Canvas. WC has a huge image library of copyright free photos. This young man has fallen asleep with his phone open, hence the title of my painting.

On our third workshop day, Dreama did a chunky demo of a teacup. Then we had the choice of using her photographic reference or our own photo. I had been wanting to paint my cookie jar for a while now so I used my own photo. I used the transparent oils as the block-in. Under the lid I used Indian Yellow and I think Sap Green and Rose under the body of the jar. You can see the difference in warmth. My cookie jar sits on my green tile kitchen counter that I just love and have put in several of my pastel paintings. You can see them on my website. www.gloriajzucaro.com There were cookies for us at the workshop, so I added those to the composition. My cookie jar at home sits empty most of the time, because if I baked or filled it from the grocery, it would soon be empty anyway! I love cookies!

This is my painting from Dreama's reference of Santa Monica beach. Reference photo below. I added the palms on the left and eliminated the path with the people. I like the sort of Gauguin look. The glow on the sunny side of the umbrella is from putting transparent Indian Yellow beneath the white during the block-in process.

Colors vary due to differences in lighting and monitors.

This painting has been donated to The Heart of good Shepherd Hospital "Let's have Tea" fundraiser held to promote awareness of heart disease in women. And it sold!

My supplies from the Dreama Tolle Perry workshop arrived late yesterday. On our first day we had introductions and a name tag with an affirmation given to us. After our intro we were to read our affirmation. My name tag got displaced around the fourth day, but my affirmation was something like"the world is a better place because I share my creative talents." Next we learned about the palette starting with transparent oils and the addition of the rest of the palette colors. Afterward Dreama started her "chunky" demo for this painting above. The term chunky referring to the process of demoing in three or four parts so that we wouldn't forget how she had started. At the end of each part we returned to our easels and painted up to where that part of the demo had ended using a photo she had given each of us. It was a fun and interesting first day!

Well, I am finally home and well enough to paint! I had a wonderful 10 day trip to the pacific Northwest to visit an old friend in Anacortes,Washington for 3 days then drove down Whidbey Island to the town of Langley. The Whidbey Island Fine Art School operated by Cary Jurrians was hosting a Dreama Tolle Perry workshop for 5 days. I was intrigued by Dreama's use of transparent oils in her paintings and her wonderful writings and paintings in her blog posts, so just forced myself to take a trip out to see her in person! LOL! Any excuse! I am so glad that I did because Dreama is a wonderful instructor and a fun and giving person. I met lots of other artists from across the USA, too, and we hope to keep in touch. Cary was an absolutely wonderful hostess with fresh fruit, coffee and homemade baked goods every morning. Faye Castle , the class monitor was such a help with any questions about supplies, restaurants, and putting out all the goodies every day. Cary and her husband hosted us for dinner on Sunday with the most wonderful homemade breads, choices of pasta, salad and fresh berry cobbler for dessert. I stayed at a lovely B & B called Country Cottage of Langley operated by Tom and Jacki Stewart. A beautiful waterview room with delicious breakfasts every morning. They were eager to arrange meal times and anything else you might need. The last night I was there I came down with "stay up all night" stomach issues. They were so kind and brought crackers and gingerale, ginger tea, ginger chews to try to ease my upset. I slept later than checkout and they gave me help with the suitcases to the car and insisted I take a banana to see if I could keep that down a little later. That trip home was not the best I have ever experienced! But all is well!

This is the monthly challenge for the Virtual Paintout site. Our globe trotting on Google Maps/Streetview this time around was the city and environs of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is always fun to travel around the city and feel like you are there in the streets watching all the people walking along with their shopping bags. This location is on the little island to the West of the city itself, but still considered Saint Petersburg. I couldn't decipher the name of the island or this pretty building. I do know that many government buildings in Russia are painted in cheerful colors so that everything looks better during their long, snowy Winter's. This is also my entry for Paint Party Friday this week. Happy PPF

The Daily Paintworks assignment this week is to "Paint Your Donut". So, of course, one was not enough since I would be painting at the Mainstreet Studio with my friends. I ran(not literally!) to Jewel and picked some donuts from the bakery department thinking I would maybe just paint the green decorated Long John in honor of Saint Patrick's Day. I had brought a red plate and a green plate with me, figuring that most donuts have a reddish tone to them. When I started my set-up I thought I liked it better with a variety instead of just one donut. I finished the painting by lunchtime, so these were our dessert. Yum! Paypal

This is the challenge from Carol Marine at the Daily Paintworks for the week. I brought the horizon closer to the horse and tried to keep the shapes in mind.. I had toned the canvas with cad red before beginning and let it show through around the silhouette of the horse.

I love my electric drill, which for me is really my electric screwdriver. I mainly use it when framing my paintings or taking down curtain rods, etc. I wasn't liking my drill all alone, but once I added the flower, I felt good about it.
