Meeting Tomorrow

Just a reminder that we will be having our general assembly meeting this Thursday, February 7th at 4:30pm in Temple 105. We will be recapping the MO Love retreat, finalizing details for the DC trip, and breaking into committees to make goals and set a timeline for Ecopalooza. There will also be some opportunities for fun events and volunteering. See you there!

If you are planning on attending the DC trip, please bring $20 to the meeting tomorrow to secure your spot. If you would like to learn more about the trip or are unsure about attending, email Lauren.

Meeting Thursday

Hey everybody!

I hope you are having a fantastic first official week of fall! We have a lot of important events coming up so make sure that you attend meeting, if possible. We will be meeting this Thursday at 4:30 outside of Temple Hall (it's supposed to be BEAUTIFUL this week!). See you there!

Last week, we broke into committees for the Shoe Drive, Game Day recycling event, and different homecoming committees. Here's some information about what we discussed and what we will be talking about this week:

Shoe Drive: This is an event that will be benefiting the local organization, Friends Against Hunger. Old shoes will be collected in a bin in the PSU for the entire week following Fall Break (Oct. 17-21). The shoes will either be recycled or sent to needy countries. We are in the process of finishing up a flyer for the event, as well as starting on other promotional ideas.

Game Day Recycling: We will entering a competition with the EPA to reduce the amount of waste at our football games, and will focus on the Homecoming football game. We will need a lot of people to make this event successful, so make sure you are available this day!

Homecoming: We will be participating in 3 different events: PSU window painting, the Chili Cook-off (with veggies from the campus garden), and the Parade. These events are going to super fun and an exciting way to promote our club so get EXCITED!

Other announcements:

- We will be volunteering in the campus garden on Sunday. I will have more information about specific times later this week.

- The retreat was AWESOME! Thank you to everyone who was able to attend. We look forward to returning to the Watershed Center to hike the trails in the area.

- There is still time to register for Midwest Power Shift! Last spring, we brought together 10,000 young people in Washington DC to stand up for clean energy, stop dirty energy projects, and get corporate money out of our democracy. Powershift 2011 was pretty awesome, but this fall we're going deeper, and focusing on the issues that we're facing locally and regionally in order to really build our movement and launch the campaigns that our generation has the power to win. I'm hoping you'll join thousands of students October 21st- 23rd in Cleveland, Ohio for Midwest Powershift: It's gonna be epic. If you are available this weekend, we will arrange a cheap way for you to get to and from the event.

- We are looking for a Fun chair, Treasurer, and Media chair. If you are interested, please let us know! These are not demanding positions, and we really hope some folks step up and take on one of these exec positions!

Hello all!

I am SO excited to kick off another great year with Students for a Sustainable Future! Just a reminder, we will be meeting THIS THURSDAY at 4:30 PM in the Temple Hall pit (that's the little gathering area just inside Temple Hall). As far as an agenda goes, we will be doing some quick introductions, updates from officers, and going over some options for everyone to get involved right away! We might even be having our first dumpster dive that day.. who's excited??

I can't wait to see you all Thursday at 4:30!

The word sustainability is derived from the Latin sustinere (tenere, to hold; sus, up). Dictionaries provide more than ten meanings for sustain, the main ones being to “maintain", "support", or "endure”.^[3]^[4] However, since the 1980s sustainability has been used more in the sense of human sustainability on planet Earth and this has resulted in the most widely quoted definition of sustainability and sustainable development, that of the Brundtland Commission of the United Nations on March 20, 1987: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”^[5]^[6]
At the 2005 World Summit it was noted that this requires the reconciliation of environmental, social and economic demands - the "three pillars" of sustainability.^[7] This view has been expressed as an illustration using three overlapping ellipses indicating that the three pillars of sustainability are not mutually exclusive and can be mutually reinforcing.^[8]
The UN definition is not universally accepted and has undergone various interpretations.^[9]^[10]^[11] What sustainability is, what its goals should be, and how these goals are to be achieved are all open to interpretation.^[12] For many environmentalists the idea of sustainable development is an oxymoron as development seems to entail environmental degradation.^[13] Ecological economist Herman Daly has asked, "what use is a sawmill without a forest?"^[14] From this perspective, the economy is a subsystem of human society, which is itself a subsystem of the biosphere, and a gain in one sector is a loss from another.^[15] This can be illustrated as three concentric circles.
