Grandaddy Hudson

Hey friends! SO sorry that I have been scarce lately. I have been giving a lot of time and energy to my new business venture (post on that coming soon) and trying to spend as much time as possible with my sweet Grandaddy.

He has been fighting the battle with lung cancer since October, and 3ish weeks ago, we were given the news that it had spread to his liver. Those next weeks were filled with a lot of love and round the clock care for him, and then Friday morning he went home to be with Jesus and with my grandmother, who he lost when my mom was eleven. Here is a photo of us with him on our wedding day, almost exactly 2 years ago (the 22nd was our Anniversary).

We all knew where he was going when he passed, but it had still been so hard to let him go. His final night here on the earth, my sister and sister-in-law sat by his bed singing him his favorite hymns. Also, for Christmas 2010, I made him a jar of memories that I collected from all of the members of our family. I wrote them each on a piece of paper and put them in a ball jar so that he could pull out one at a time and read them. He loved that jar. My mom and her sister (and other family members that were there) pulled those out and read each one to him, one by one. They said that he smiled as they shared precious memories with him.

He had a beautiful life. He fell in love with my grandmother and had 6 children with her. He served our country both in the Navy and the Air Force. He lost my grandmother to cancer when his children were very young, and met Jeanette, the grandmother that I have known in my life (in the photo above). He had so many grandchildren that I lost count of us. And he lived for the Lord, the most important legacy that we can leave.

I remember when I was little, he used to bring us fresh vegetables and I would help him clean and prepare them. He loved to garden. I also remember his smile and his laugh and how he always made me so happy. I remember the silly way that he used to ring the doorbell 4 million times when he came. It was only him that did that. There are so many things that I remember that I will not write here, or else this post would go on forever. But the best memory that I have, the one that I will hold on to forever, was from last Sunday. It was before he had progressed too far that he was not coherent. I had been to his house visiting with him and was leaving to go to the grocery store. I leaned over to kiss him, he kissed me and then looked in my eyes and said "I love you. SO much." It was the last coherent sentence that I ever heard from him, and I will treasure it in my heart always.

My uncle Darryl was supposed to be baptized on May 20th. My grandfather passed away on May 18th. It was very important for him to know that his children would all meet him in heaven someday and he really wanted to be there. So as a family, we decided to baptize my uncle at his funeral, as a way to honor him. It was such a beautiful thing.

Now I ask that you would pray for peace and comfort for my family. Especially my mom and her siblings. Now that the hustle and bustle of the funeral has passed, they have to face taking care of all of his earthly matters, which as any of you that have lost someone know, is very hard to do while you are grieving. I leave you with this beautiful quote from a story that my sweet, sweet Grandaddy wrote:

Little Shed on the Prairie

Okay its not really on a prairie. Its in the back yard. But for some reason that is what the before pictures made me think of, so that is what you get! Last Saturday (I know...fail that I am just now posting from last Saturday) Michael decided that our rusty shed needed a little love.

It really needs a coat of paint, but that is not what we did. It will happen in the future, just not yet!

He decided that it really needed a bit more landscaping around it.

First, he dug around the front and sides the shape of the bed that he wanted. This is easier with a square shovel, but we don't have one, so he made do with the one in the pic!

Here she is with the bed shape dug out.

Then he let me place the plant variety that he bought how I wanted them.

The next step was to get the edges straight in the back and then lay out the edging.

Edging is important! It helps to define the bed and keep weeds and grass out!

He carefully lined the edging along the side of the bed and drive edging steaks into it. This helps to hold it in place.

Here is the other side of the ramp with the edging down.

Next he put down underlayment weed guard. This helps keep the weeds from coming up from the bottom.

He cut holes for the plants (with potting soil under them). Once the plants were in he filled around them with black mulch.

Here is the left side of the shed with the underlayment.

And the finished product!

It made the shed look so much nicer! Someday soon (probably not soon) we will paint it so that it looks better itself, but for now its spruced up by its surroundings!

Colorful Deviled Eggs

Oops! I totally forgot I did have one other Easter project that I did on Saturday to share with you! In addition to the Waffles, I decided to make deviled eggs. But I did not want to make just any deviled eggs, I wanted to make them festive! Here is a little tutorial for ya!

First, get a glass for every color of egg that you want. Fill the glass about half full of water, add a little (I mean little bit) of white vinegar which is optional, and a few drops of food coloring.

I wanted to do the whole rainbow! For the purple I just mixed blue and red drops.

Take your shelled hardboiled egg and cut it in half.

Carefully pop the yolks out and put them in a separate bowl.

Then, you want to drop one or two egg halves ino each glass and let them sit for 5 minutes.

Carefully scoop the egg up to see if it has reached the desired color. If not, put it back in for another 3-5 minutes.

Once the eggs are the color that you want, lay them face down on a paper towel to dry.

While the whites are drying, smash up your yolks in your bowl. Add mayonaise and mustard to get desired consistency. I just sort of do this to taste. I also add just a pinch of Splenda or sugar and a tiny dash of salt.

Put your yolks on whatever you intend to serve the eggs on.

Usually I use an icing bag for this step, but I was out and this is more for the everyday person that does not keep icing bags handy! Just fill a ziplock bag with your egg filling and snip the corner off.

Squeeze the bag to swirl filling into the hole of each egg. I would recommend starting by filling each egg just enough and then go back and add more, to make sure that you fill all of the eggs.

The last step is to add a dash of Paprika to each egg!

There you have it! Super cute, colorful deviled eggs good for any Spring get together! I may have to make some if we have a Mother's day party too! And for the summer, you could make red, white and blue! How fun!

Easter 2012

Happy belated Easter my friends!

I took the weekend off from blogging, etc. to enjoy celebrating Christ and relaxing with my family. (by relaxing, I mean spring cleaning all day Saturday, but relaxing for Sunday and Monday!) We had a little get together at our house for Easter Brunch on Sunday. I was a horrible blogger and did not take many pictures (like I said, my mind was not on blogging) but I wanted to share the few that I did take with you!

For centerpieces, I made these cute little Easter trees! I got those teal pails from the Target dollar bin. You will see those again this summer! And the eggs and Easter grass there too. Then I just cut dogwood branches from our yard. They are held in place in the buckets with rocks and I put a little water in there too.

Here they are on the tables. We had to tape the cloths to the tables because Easter decided to be really windy! And since we don't have a large dining area inside we had scrubbed down and set up on the carport. The day turned out to be perfect, despite the wind.

Everyone brought yummy brunch items, but alas I did not get a photo of those. I did get a picture of our cute little waffle irons pre-action! I made waffle batter from scratch and we had our and my parents waffle iron cranking out fresh waffles! I can't stand frozen waffles, but give me a warm fresh waffle any day!

Easter Cake Balls

On Sunday we had a cookout with some friends from our community group and I volunteered to contribute the dessert. Since most of us are working on eating healthier, I wanted something bite-sized for dessert so ~~that I~~ that we would not eat 1,000 calories worth of dessert. So I decided what better bite-sized dessert is there than cake balls!

On Saturday night I whipped up a batch (using the crubmled cake-icing method for the inside), dipped them in fun springy green white chocolate, and covered them in Easter Sprinkles!

Once the chocolate had hardened, I placed a piece of parchment paper in my easter basket and arranged them inside.

I love the "eggs in the easter basket" look! Such a fun way to transport cake balls!

Really, they just made me smile! I love love love this super easy dessert! Makes me want to make another batch just to look at them!

Spring Flowers

You may remember when I shared my Spring Mantle (here) that I opted to use real flowers that I found in our yard. Well, a week later they were starting to get a bit crispy. So I threw out the old, and set about finding new blooms...still from our yard!

I started with some beautiful dogwood branches in the vase on the entryway table. They had just bloomed and still look fresh!

For the pitcher on the mantle, I did something I thought I would never do. I stole flowers from the outside! We planted parrot tulips a couple of years ago and they just came up about 2 weeks ago. I love the way that they dress up the outside of the house, but I figured three for the mantle was no biggie :)

I love the way that they just sort of have a mine of their own. And they are a lovely pop of color!

I also replaced the old branches in the mason jar with dogwoods.

I think they are so cute! I really love the look of fresh flowers in the living room!

Also, for a little bit of accountability for us, I wanted to put this out there. Michael and I have decided both for the sake of our dietary changes and mainly for the sake of finances, we are going to take a fast from eating out (lunch, dinner, dessert, etc.) for the entire month of April. We figure we spend $300-400 a month on that junk and its something that we can live without for a month to help pay off other things. I am also hoping that cooking at home a lot more will give my diet another kick-start!

So, my local friends/family, if you invite us out and we politely decline, know that we love you and have a conviction and a reason for turning you down. We are totally okay with having people over or eating in at other people's houses, just trying to cut the money for a bit! :)

Mom's Birthday Cake

Hey friends! I for once have quite a few little projects that I need to get posted on here! This one, I could not WAIT to show you guys!

We celebrated my sweet momma's birthday on Friday. I was commissioned to make the cake. I have this bad habit of putting lots of effort into cakes that I am being paid for, but then slacking when I make them for the ones that I love. So I decided to make this one a labor of love and part of our gift to her. She has always loved when I did basketweave piping on cakes, but it has been years since I have done it! So when I was planning her cake, I knew I wanted to incorporate that at least on part of it.

I wanted to fill the basket with something, like maybe fruit or flowers. I settled on hydrangeas because they are one of the prettiest spring plants in my opinion!

Here is the top view. I decided to mix the blue in for some contrast.

I had initially planned to make the bottom cake white too, but then I thought it would be really fun to make that lavender. That is actually what inspired the hydrangeas. I could not be more pleased with the way that it turned out!

So one last time, Happy Birthday Mom! I love you and I hope that you enjoyed (and are still enjoying...I made way too much!) your cake!

My Newest Addition!

Betcha thought this post was going to be about a pet, child or decor item? Nope! As I mentioned on here oh...forever ago (btw I had a huge relapse since then), and then again right after my hospital scare, I have been on a journey to make healthy lifestyle changes and get in shape. I really committed to this back in mid-January and have lost 15lbs so far, just working out 4 days a week and eating healthy.

Probably 80% of the problem for me when I am trying to get in shape is that I get really bored with doing the same workout day in and day out. Also my body adjusts to them and they stop working. So this time I have been constantly looking for new ways to work out.

Recently my husband got into kettlebell fitness and I can see that he is having great results. I have wanted to start using them too, because I know they are great, but his is way over my weight limit. So today I was in WalMart and came across one just my size for $15! I couldn't walk away. I figure that he can teach me the moves that he does and help me out with it. Only problem was that I wanted to try it tonight and he had to work! So I started scouring the web and found this workout:

It actually is not super hard. I have been using an 8 lbs kettlebell. Most of the movements are pretty easy, like this one:

However, after doing several reps you start to feel it. I also really love the swings, because I can feel them in my core.

I did the full workout in 2 circuits, waited an hour and half (a bad storm hit and I decided to chill and wait it out...tornado warnings, etc) and then 2 more full circuits when the storm was done. It was a great workout! I know I will be feeling it in the morning! Anyone looking to start a workout or to diversify the one that they are doing, I would HIGHLY recommend getting a kettlebell!

I will let you know how trying to do these with my husband goes!

Spring Mantle

Happy Saturday, friends! The other day I decided that I had had enough of our winter mantle, so I decided to switch all of that chilly decor out for some spring! I was wanting to do it without spending anything, so I went outside and cut some blooms and branches to use in the livingroom.

For the entryway, I placed some branches in my quatrefoil vase and then filled my cloche with jute wrapped eggs that I made last year and some moss balls.

For the mantle, I rearranged a lot of what was already there and brought my cute Phaltzgraff pitcher in and filled in with branches.

Its so cheerful and bright! I know they will wilt soon, but I plan to juse keep replacing them with other branches. I am rebelling against the concept of buying fake ones!

For the other end, I filled a ball jar with water and placed some blooms in that as well.

Its such a cheerful change to the feel of the living room. We are spending a lot more time wit the windows open so it even feels and smells more Springy.

I also filled my little decanter with water, snipped some greens and placed them in the water. It turned out so cute!

Brown Sugar Body Scrub

So I know I have been a failure at regular posting lately, but honestly I think I just needed a little break. It has been lovely. After being sick, I was able to finish my most recent class and take a week of "Spring Break" from school as well, before my next class starts. I have still had to work, but things have been much more laid back outside of that.

That being said, I am FINALLY getting aroung to sharing with you guys the brown sugar scrub that I made for my sister-in-law's birthday gift basket that I shared in this post.

To make the scrub, I don't remember the exact amounts that I used becaues I ended up doctoring it, but I believe I started with two cups of brown sugar, 1/8th cup of olive oil and 3 tbsps of honey. Then I may have added the ingredients without measuring to doctor it into what felt like a normal body scrub consistency. I forgot to take photos of this part! So sorry!

Next, I poured my gloopy mixture into a simple mason jar.

I cut a square of white linen and placed in over the inner part of the lid and then twisted the collar over it, securing it in place and adding a bit of charm.

Next, I hot glued a strip of burlap around the center of the jar, like this:

I love the texture added by the burlap! To finish it off, I tied a cute little tag around it with some twine. I really could not be happier with the way that it turned out!

You will have to let me know if any of you try this! I really want to make a batch for myself, I just haven't gotten around to it just yet. Also, I finally finished that coffee table makeover, I just have not taken pictures of it yet! I promise to try to do so this week!

I hope you all are loving the springlike weather! I cannot WAIT to get our spring decor out. I loved what we had for winter, but I am over it! :) Hopefully I will get to that sometime this week too!
