Fashion Week is in full swing and I've had so much fun hanging out with everyone! Last night was especially fun at the LuLu's Style Studio event. Emma, Kennedy and I got some pizza before heading into the city to meet Erin, Emily, and Kater. I'm just so glad everyone is in town and to be honest that is the best part of fashion week. It's like a friend reunion that happens every 6 months! Be sure to check out my Instagram for lots of random, silly pictures of all of us!

I had the privilege of attending the Lauren Moffatt Fall 2012 presentation on Wednesday! The inspiration and concept was super cute - a school for wayward girls where mischief and fun lurked around every corner. I love the classic buttoned up look of a school uniform and Lauren Moffatt put a great spin on that with all her fantastic attention to detail and the amazing prints.

I'll let the photos (there are A LOT) do the rest of the talking!
I've been waiting for the next Grain & Gram feature for what feels like an eternity. If you haven't heard of them, they're a fantastic online men's journal that interviews artisans and craftsmen across the country. These are honest to goodness men who work with their hands making things every day. Whether it's leather goods, furniture or music, these guys tireless hone their craft and take pride in what they do.

This particular feature caught my eye because the guys who work with Jason Gregory at Makr Carry Goods remind me so much of my old friend, Cade. He just has this totally laid back style and could make wearing a t-shirt, jeans and a pair of Converse look as good as a three piece suit. I always envy people who can pull off that type of effortless all-American look and the crew at Makr seem to wear it as their uniform.

Take a look at the great video Grain and Gram put together of the Makr studio and staff and shop Makr Carry Goods here.
Photos by me.

It was abnormally warm this week, which usually bring these jeans out of hiding. Jeans and flats are just my go-tos for warmer weather when tights are too much and bare legs are a bit too much.

I had been scouring Ebay for a pair of Bardots for years when I happened upon these in Beacon's Closet a few years ago. My jaw dropped to the floor and I had to take a minute to look around and make sure no one else was noticing my miraculous discovery. They fit like a glove and I would do just about anything to find another pair before these ones wear out.

Kennedy is in town this weekend and I cannot wait to see her tomorrow! I haven't seen her since Memorial Day (!) last year, so it's a much over due reunion!

Here's the break down:

Monday: J.Crew sweater, Leah's shirt via ModSwap, vintage skirt and shoes
Tuesday: American Apparel Cardigan, thrifted shirt, J.Brand Bardot jeans from Beacon's Closet, Dalaga flats
Wednesday: J.Crew sweater, thrifted shirt, J.Brand Bardot jeans, vintage saddle shoes via Etsy
Thursday: Dalaga shirt, H&M denim jumper, Madewell shoes
Friday: J.Crew sweater, vintage silk tank top, Steven Alan sample sale skirt, Madewell shoes

Michelle told me about Kimbra a month or two ago and didn't really pay much attention because I'm generally not a pop music kind of girl, but I can't stop listening! She's only 21 but has an amazing soulful, jazzy voice which is perfectly paired with the dark, quirky arrangements and I really dig the world she creates in her videos.

She's obviously cute as a button too and to be honest I'm kind of a sucker for anyone with blue eyes and dark hair. I also feel like we are kindred dancing spirits. Greg tells me her moves are not unlike my own haha!

I really love her live sessions at Sing Sing Studios (one of which is below) the best because they really highlight her voice and the music is much simpler.

Anyway, here are a bunch of videos - Happy Friday!

I love David Hockney. He was my favorite photographer, painter, artist and all around inspiring creative person during college. I even chose one of his paintings to try and copy exactly for my color theory class, so I was thrilled when Greg notified me of this great write up and style profile Mr. Porter did about him.

I always thought he had great style that was maybe a little bit too square for his art, but it was such a nice contrast to the otherwise weirdness that was happening during the 60s and 70s pop are scene. He was still wearing the nerdy classes, bow ties and classic English trench coats he donned during his formative years at the Royal College of Art.

I think Mr. Porter did a fantastic job of picking out the essentials that evoke Mr. Hockney's slightly quirky look and it just goes to show that the classics never die. Check out the full interview on Mr. Porter here and look at Mr. Hockney's fantastic art here.
Sunglasses: From Anna via a swap
Shirt: St. James
Jumper: Vintage via Etsy
Bag: Dalaga
Shoes: Madewell
Coat and scarf: J.Crew

This graffitied wall is right around the corner from our apartment. The awning says it's a produce stand, but it hasn't been open since before we moved in. I think it was/is owned by the same people who had the bodega on the first floor of our building (which has since closed), but it doesn't look like they will be reopening it anytime soon. I'm hoping for a cute coffee shop, bar or little cafe to open in it's place! It would be so nice to have something like that right at our doorstep.

I felt very Parisian in this outfit, but that's only because of the St. James tee and the red lipstick. Stripes are always my go-to when I'm not quite sure what to wear. I have a huge stack of them and they take up most of my shirt drawer, but this St. James is definitely my favorite. I've also amassed quite the jumper collection which seems kind of weird, but they're perfectly suited for all the stripes I own that it somehow makes sense.

Sometimes I feel like I dress too young (whatever that means) - that I'm missing that "adult" element, but I can never quite put my finger on what that is exactly. Maybe I'm just being too self critical. Either way, I won't be getting rid of this winning combo for a while to come!

Photos by me.

Another week gone by! This Madewell dress is the first actual new, non-discounted item that I have purchased in a long time. I got a gift card for Christmas and the minute I saw this thing I new that I would be using my store credit to buy it. I'm thinking about going back and getting it in white too because I know I will wear it all the time, but that might be overkill...

I should also mention the necklace I'm wearing. It's from In God We Trust and I wear it almost every day! It was a belated birthday gift from Greg and it has a little inscription on it. I won't tell you what it says, but I will say that it's very sweet and I love it to pieces.

Friday's outfit initially felt like a mess because I woke up so late that I didn't have time to shower or really think about what I was putting on my body, but it ended up being one of my favorite outfits from this week! I need to wear my hair in a braid more often.

Here's the break down:

Monday: H&M dress (worn as a shirt), Steven Alan jumper via sample sale, Madewell boots
Tuesday: In God We Trust necklace, Madewell dress, thrifted shoes
Wednesday: Thrifted sweater, Built by Wendy skirt via sample sale, Madewell boots
Thursday: Madewell sweater, Leah Goren dress, Madewell shoes
Friday: J.Crew sweater, Zachary's Smile dress, my moms belt, vintage shoes

Monday

Wednesday

I came across Frances Baker not too long ago via Lauren of Blooming Leopold and I have to say that it's one of the best discoveries of last year. Since then, Josie and I have had a little bit of an internet friendship and I have to say that she is just the sweetest lady and obviously really, really talented.

I definitely prefer Summer to Winter and these photos have me desperately wishing for warmer weather. As you know, I'm a fan of road trips and country adventures and the wood fences, small colorful houses and somewhat desolate landscapes are reminiscent of some of the towns Greg and I have driven through. There's also something effortless about Australian Summer style and the Frances Baker look book really embodies that easy, but classic style.

I'm also really proud of Josie! She left a job she hated to pursue her passion and I feel like that's what I've been trying to do the past year. It just makes me really happy to see creative and talented people go after what they really love and seeing other people's success gives me hope for my own.

I received some Frances Baker items this week and I cannot wait to wear them when I go to Texas in March. You will definitely be seeing this dress and these bloomers on here very soon!
I don't usually post collections, but the Sessun S/S 2012 look book is just... amazing. It's the perfect balance between sweet and adult, which I feel like is something that I struggle with on an daily basis.

I love how they combine classic silhouettes with youthful details, but it never feels juvenile. Maybe it's because it just snowed in NYC and I'm longing hard for summer, or maybe it's the romance of French culture, but Sessun is hands down my favorite spring/summer look book thus far.
Photos by me.

Earlier this week I mentioned that I started documenting my daily outfits on Instagram. It seemed to go over pretty well so I figured I would start doing a weekly round up for y'all! I also like looking back and seeing the patterns in how I dress. I clearly love tights and my Madewell boots almost never leave my feet. One thing I also noticed, which doesn't actually surprise me, is that most of what I wear is either, vintage, free from a swap, purchased at major discount or from Madewell (thanks to my year long stint there).

Here's the breakdown:

Monday: Plaid from some store in SF, $10 H&M denim jumper, Madewell boots
Tuesday: J.Crew sweater, H&M dress via a swap, Madewell boots
Wednesday: Goodwill sweater, Steven Alan sample sale skirt, Madewell boots
Thursday: J.Crew sweater, Madewell dress and boots
Friday: Madewell sweater and boots, vintage lace tee, vintage skirt via a swap (Thanks Emily!)

Monday, Tuesday

Thursday, Friday
P.S. How do you guys feel about this format? Do you like the two photo collage or would you prefer to see all five photos at full size?

Winter is Here

Photos by Greg

Hat: Gap a couple years ago
Shoes: Etsy

Well, guys, it's officially winter here in NYC. It has been pretty darn mild up until now and I think we are definitely paying the price. This weekend was especially chilly and called for tights under pants. I wore these red ones during the afternoon, but had to switch to a gray cable knit wooly pair for the evening.

I am finding it rather challenging to take outfit photos because of the weather. I don't have very good light in my apartment and to be honest it's still a bit of a mess from moving... but I will figure something out! Gotta work with what you have. For now you get more pictures of me bundled up like that kid from A Christmas Story.
I'm not able to take full photos of my outfits every day so this has been a really great alternative. You can follow if you'd like (@olivemylove) to see more plus lots of random things from work, my apartment and various things around Brooklyn.

You may have also noticed that I gave my blog a facelift! I have been wanting to redesign this thing for a while now and I was finally able to implement it with Greg's help. He is an html genius and generally my go-to internet wizard. I've added a bunch of things like about and contact pages, plus some sponsorship info. What do you guys think?
That plus Anja's year end post totally had me rethink this entry and actually reflect on what happened in 2011. To be honest, things have been rough for me since 2009, and it's only now that I am starting to feel like I might be approaching happiness. I can see it on the horizon, but I'm not quite sure how long it will take to get there.

One major event that I can think of was FINALLY getting a job after months upon months of soul crushing unemployment and living like a pauper. Not that I live like a king now, but I can at least go buy groceries without the fear of not being able to pay rent if I buy a can of black beans. This job has actually lead to a greater realization, which is that I think I would like to have my own store some day. I know I could do it and I know I would damn good at it, so at least there's that.

Other major things included buying a bike, my John Wilkes Booth road trip, one of my best friends getting married and the trip to St. Croix, Fashion Week, moving in with Greg and generally just getting our lives on the right paths. We have been such a support for each other this year and I feel lucky to have him as a partner in my life.

I guess I don't have much to offer in terms of wise words or an all-knowing phrase to sum up the year, but I will say that I am looking forward to the next one. For now I am going to paint my nails and stress about tonight's outfit.

Happy New Year!

Happy Christmas!

I'm up in New England for a couple days for the holiday weekend and I could not be happier to be sitting in a bed at almost 4 pm on Christmas day, still in my pjs.
Well, it's really starting to feel like winter is about to be here any second now. Every day is getting a little colder and I'm starting to wish I had brought my hat with me every time I leave the house without it.

Although I might look cozied up in this outfit, I wasn't even close to being warm. I really needed to be wearing another pair of tights (my winter secret to keeping the gams from freezing) and a sweater of some kind. I braved the chilly wind to get these pics though, and felt like a real model for a second because of it.

I really can't wait for Christmas this year because I'm just really looking forward to taking a break. This week is especially crazy with Dalaga participating in two holiday markets - The Brooklyn Night Bazaar and the Yelp Giftacular Holiday Market. I'll be working the BK Night Bazaar on Friday and Saturday, so please come by and visit me if you plan on checking it out! It looks pretty darn awesome - over 100 local merchant and food vendors, live music, art installations, DJs... Should be a good time!

P.S. My bangs are almost completely gone! It's crazy!

This past Friday Dalaga hosted a party to celebrate the launch of The Loved One! I think Emily said it best in that this matrimony has been a long time coming. TLO is really the perfect fit for Dalaga. It's vintage boudoir inspired lingerie mimics the store's intimate decor and Hannah mentioned that she thinks Dalaga has a sophisticated femininity that TLO fits perfectly in. I couldn't agree more!

As many of you know, TLO has their own storefront in Pasadena, but up until now there was no where for us East Coasters to get the pretty underthings in person. Lucky for us you can now shop the entire TLO collection at Dalaga and even get a few items online!

Onto the party pics! I obviously wore some TLO underthings and felt secretly sexy all night. I decided to glam it up and wore my new white Steven Alan sample sale dress, red lipstick and simple black pumps. I have to say that my hair managed to look the way I wanted it to for once and I felt pretty darn good about it.

It was basically a girl fest save Greg, Bob (Dalaga owner Michelle's husband), Landon and few of his pals. I always have a blast when I get to hang out with Alley, Emily, Anna, Emma and Hannah and I was really happy that Amy and Frankie came too! It was great to meet Amy's sister and Leeann who I have been following on Tumblr forever.

All in all it was a great time with pink drinks, pigs in a blanket and frilly under things. You can see lots more pictures from the party on Dalaga's Facebook!
I never really think about it until I get her call, so I'm always at a loss. After some thinking and window shopping on the internet most of the things I'm longing for come from Etsy and some of my other favorite hand made sellers.

Left to right, top to bottom:
She is so pretty and I'm so excited to see her in Anja's gorgeous photos.
The colors and the rich textures are perfect and the Iowa scenery make me wish I was somewhere in the woods in New England. I'm definitely excited and ready to go home for few days during Christmas!

I had just been laid off from my job, and one of my best friends e-mailed me with a super cheap airline promo for tickets to LA. Naturally, I purchased the tickets immediately and took a two week vacation from my life and the misery I was feeling for the sunny west coast.

It just so happened that Thanksgiving fell in those two weeks. We had a giant potluck in LA before the actual holiday, but Emily, her roommate Mo, her co-worker Kristin and I decide to leave the city for the holiday weekend for... you guessed it - VEGAS!

We stayed in the New York, New York hotel (hence the Statue of Liberty and roller coaster in the first picture) where we played slots, jumped on our beds and ordered room service. On actual Thanksgiving we walked to the Hooters Hotel and Casino (yes, THAT Hooters) and proceeded to have a fried pickle feast. Little known fact: Bud Light is $1 in the casino and full price in the restaurant, BUT you can go out to the casino to buy said $1 beers and bring them back into the restaurant!

While I was up getting us a round of these cheapo beers, the girls told our waitress that it was my birthday. I sat down only to be greeted by a bunch of Hooters girls clapping their hands and singing to us. I thought they were just coming over out of solidarity and in the spirit of being independent ladies out on the town during a major US holiday, but I was wrong. Luckily Kristin was able to capture the moment this dawned on me, resulting the the most hilarious photo from the entire week.

As I started to type this post, Emily, Mo, Kristin and my friend Sarah called me. They're having another Friendsgiving road trip this year, but this time they're in Joshua Tree. I so badly wish I could be there, in the middle of the desert with them camping, laughing, and drinking wine by the fire.

I hope you all have an amazing holiday with whoever you call family.
Scarf: Steven Alan sample sale
Coat: Thrifted
Dress: Via a swap
Sweater: J.Crew
Tights and shoes: Dalaga
Bag: Vintage

This jacket is one of my most treasured thrifted items. I got it way back in May during Memorial Day weekend when I went thrifting with Kennedy. It's really hard for me to find vintage jackets because I'm relatively petite, so you will often find me in the kids section looking for outerwear. That usually leads to me wearing things that are cropped with 3/4 sleeves, but I think this jacket must be a juniors size which is why it's so perfect. It fits me like a glove. Seriously, it's like this jacket was made for me. The sleeves are exactly the right length, it's not too wide or tight in the shoulders... not to mention the amazing stripe detailing on the sleeves and collar. Love at first sight!

I had a pretty lazy weekend, which was much needed after burning the candle at both ends last weekend. I forgot to mention in my last post that I went to Elephant's Trunk with Alley and Emma. I woke up at 5 am and we left by six to get there by eight. I was out until 3 am the night before for a friends birthday, so it's really my own fault, but hey. It was totally worth it. I got a rad 48 star American flag (with a 49th star hand sewn on!), an old wooden painters ladder and the most delicious hand made mini donuts I have ever eaten.

Greg and I just did a few errands in Manhattan and we stopped by Madison Square before heading to TJ's for groceries. I really wanted a vanilla milkshake, but even in the fall there was a line about a quarter mile long. I can't really believe its already Thanksgiving, but I'm excited at the prospect of going home for Christmas. I love New York, but there really is no other place like New England this time of year. I could use an injection of that traditional Northeast holiday spirit.

Oh! And this scarf is one of my newest Steven Alan sample sale finds. I went on Friday morning and the man himself was there. Pretty sure he saw me in my bra as I was trying stuff on, but what are ya gonna do? I also left with this dress which I had been eyeing since the spring. Score!

I have been a terrible blogger lately. Work has been all consuming as we prepare for the holiday shopping season. There has been a lot of late nights shooting and editing photos so they're ready for our weekly newsletter (which you can sign up for here). More and more stuff comes in every week, so it's been hard to keep up. Luckily this is basically my dream job so I couldn't be happier being at work until 10:30 at night.

We quickly took these shots as the sun was setting after an afternoon of hanging out with Greg's nephews in Manhattan. Man, those babies are so darn cute! I miss their baby/toddler faces. I can't wait to buy them lots of cute little presents for Hanukkah and Christmas.

Anyway, this giant warehouse is directly across the street from our apartment. It's called "CHEAP STORAGE" and that's what everyone I know calls it. It's been converted into giant lofts, like most of the old warehouses and factories in North Brooklyn. The people who live there have parties and shows quite often, but luckily it's not terribly loud. Greg and I have joked about crashing a party some time, but the thought of watching Felicity, or Dowton Abbey in my bed is just so much more appealing 99.9% of the time. Am I right or am I right?

Kate and Nick's St. Croix wedding celebration was at the St. Croix Yacht Club, which was super close to the house we were staying at. We had some food, got to know Nick's family, drank, danced and hung out on the dock for most of the evening. As you can see, everyone put on their most dapper version of a yacht club go-er outfit. Kate wore another Alexandra Grecco dress, (she wore a custom Alexandra Grecco dress for her wedding!) which I also have, and Nick wore his white linen suit.

There was another amazing sunset and it really was the best way to end our crazy week there.
My sinuses are clogged and it feels like my head is an expanding fuzzy balloon. Did I mention that I lost my voice too? Oh, well, I lost my voice. Please let me know if you find is wandering the streets of Brooklyn.

Greg is currently buying supplies for chicken soup and I'm not sure why, but every time he's made it for me I feel better. Maybe it's a comfort thing or maybe it really is the best remedy for when you're sick, but either way I am excited to eat it even though I won't be able to taste a thing.

Anyway, this is a little preview of and outfit post I have planned so unless I die from this not so common cold you will get to see the full thing very soon! Hope you're all staying healthy (unlike me) and that your immune system is fairing better than mine this fall.
