Sub-floor types are many and varied. All three types of flooring in your question can be installed equally well on many types of sub-floors. Concrete installation, concrete slab generally are glued using water proofing mastic glues are designed for this type of installation.

Plywood, O.S.B. or floating over existing - joist or nailed to existing flooring are all possible. Solid wood planks can be used on joist systems only. Engineered or laminate can not! Plywood or O.S.B. sub's can only be nailed to or stapled as well as click in place floating systems. These are also good candidates for glue installation.

The most important feature is to evaluate your specific sub-floor. Stability - soundness - above or below grade. Is the sub-floor wet (test concrete) or moisture meter wood or composite sub-floor, they should be 7% to 10% wet. Crawl spaces must be dry and well ventilated so moisture does not seep from under the house's foundation into sub-floor. Termite on rotting and mold are all potential problems that must be considered before installing new wood floors. Call a professional for a thorough consultation before you start. ProSand recently completed another beautiful kitchen tile backsplash in Indiana. The customer wanted her old ceramic tile removed and new tumbled marble tile installed in its place. A good client of ProSand Floors contacted Rick our project manager concerning a maintenance system ProSand provides, our client had installed a Brazilian Cherry floor eight years ago and asked ProSand to inspect its condition to see if it needed another coat to revitalize the shine and add protection from wear. Since ProSand originally installed the floor we had a good idea of clients needs. The family entertained frequently and had a eat in kitchen that supported a family of six.

Upon inspection it was clear that the main kitchen were the bar stools consistently scooted back and forth as well as back hall by the garage entry. The client and our inspector agreed a maintenance coat was required to bring back consistency to the shine and repair wear in problem areas.

Several day's later we returned to start the buff and re-coat procedure. At 8 A.M. the dust free vacuum system was engaged and buffing began with a 150 grit screen, the light abrasive pad was not overly aggressive so to damage existing finish but intense enough to smooth clean areas removing the scuffs and light scratches as well as dirt and most foreign properties that had stuck to the floor from 8 years of heavy us. After buffing was completed the floor techs got on the floor with their hands and knee's and hand buffed and cleaned areas that the buffer could not reach. A back pack vacuum was then used to clean and track floors along with a finish inspection to insure the floor was ready to be re-coated.

The final step started by applying a heavy coat of finish with a roller to insure self leveling and good coverage for added protection. The floors were then left to dry for 24 hours and furniture was returned to their original locations after an additional 24 hours.

All chairs and furniture were inspected to make sure their feet were fully protected and to insure scratches or premature wear were safely addressed. A water base cleaner was left with client to insure no build up from oil wax or silicone after cleaning. Water base cleaners are the most effective product on the market to day for new floors.

You probably know that hardwoods look great and add an air of class to your house, but do you realize some of the biggest benefits of hardwoods are things that might not cross your mind.

Did you know that hardwoods are actually more resistant to fire than carpeting, tile, and laminates? It's odd to think of wood being fire resistant, but it's true. Carpeting ignites at a lower temperature than hardwoods, and because much of the backing and glue is petrochemical based it can burn violently. Carpet also releases toxic fumes when it burns, and it is usually smoke and toxic vapors that cause most injuries and fatalities in house fires.

Many people are shocked when they find out that while tile flooring seems to be ceramic it is actually petrochemical based and can burn and release toxic smoke and fumes just like carpet. Unlike hardwoods there is also no way to repair or refinish fire-damaged carpet or tile, meaning that even a small fire could result in costly and time consuming repairs.
Hardwoods are also healthier than other types of flooring. A properly installed hardwood floor resists stains and doesn't hold moisture the way carpets can. This means that it doesn't provide a proper environment for the propagation of mold and mildew.
Hardwoods are also easily cleaned and sterilized. For persons with sever allergies or depressed immune systems this can be the difference between a healthy, comfortable life and one spent with unneeded health problems. For the allergy sufferer there's no reason to go with anything but hardwoods. Unlike carpets that can actually produce allergenic compounds hardwoods don't give off dust or other debris.

Hardwood floors also don't hold dust and dander meaning that with a simple dusting your hardwood floors will be clean, and more importantly, allergen free. Hardwoods also don't contain chemicals and dyes that can aggravate allergies.
Surprising some is the fact that a properly installed hardwood floor can actually help lower your home's heating and cooling costs. Hardwoods don't contain air pockets unlike most carpets. Because of this the hardwood will retain the temperature of the air above it. To put it simply a hardwood floor will be warm in winter, and cool in summer and will keep drafts from rising into the room, and will keep your hot or cold air from seeping into the basement. It's also a myth that hardwoods are cold in winter when you get up in your bare feet. If you flooring has been properly installed your tootsies will encounter a floor that's the same temperature as the rest of the room.

Probably the most overlooked benefit of hardwoods is the price. Do you realize that hardwoods are sometimes less expensive to purchase and install than carpets, tile, or concrete? When you factor in that most hardwoods are rated to last at least 50 years-5 to ten times longer than most carpets-it starts to become clear that hardwoods are the way to go. What's more hardwoods will require less maintenance than other types of flooring and their value will actually go up over time.

Besides looking great and adding a touch of class to your home there are plenty of reasons to choose hardwoods for your next building project. Before you install anything else talk to your builder or contractor about using hardwoods, and compare the benefits and prices with other materials. Chances are you'll make the same decision that savvy builders have been making for hundreds of years and hardwoods will adorn your home.
