As reported earlier today, our website is currently down due to a power outage where our servers are located in Vancouver, Canada. A fire occurred this morning in the financial district of Vancouver which has terminated power and internet service to the Vancouver area as well as to several server banks which house the servers that our website is currently hosted on.

Until power is restored to the server bank, access to our website will be limited or non-existent. However, orders may still be placed by phone: 1-330-467-1637 or fax: 1-330-467-2166 .

Recipe: Bath Fizzies - Sodium Borate in Formulation

You will need:

8 oz Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
4 oz Citric Acid
4 oz Zea Mays (Corn Starch)
3 oz Dead Sea Salt, Fine Grain
1 oz Sweet Almond Oil
0.5 oz Witch Hazel or Floral Water
5 ml (1 tsp) Fragrance Oil
1.25 ml (1/4 tsp) Borax Powder
Liquid Colorant, Herbal Powder or Mica (optional)
Soap Mold, Plastic Ornament Ball, Meatballer or Silicone Mini Muffin Pan

Phase 1: Wear a face mask to protect against inhaling fine dust particles and work in a well-ventilated area. Carefully combine dry ingredients including mica and any optional herbal additives until they are well blended.

Phase 2: Measure and combine the witch hazel or floral water with the borax in glass mixing utensil and stir well over low heat (or in a double boiler) until the borax granules dissolve. Mixture should be warm to hot, but not boiling. If using liquid, water based colorant, add it now. Lastly, stir the oil into this mixture and blend well. The borax acts as an emulsifier to combine the oil and water portions of the blend.

Phase 3: Slowly drizzle the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, gently stirring to prevent the fizzing reaction from starting. Make sure you combine all the ingredients thoroughly. The mixture will become dry and crumbly and has to be packed in your mold quite firmly to keep shape. The mixture should just start to hold together when pressed between your fingers.

Phase 4: Unmold the fizzies after 30 minutes and let them dry for a few days before using them. (Store in a dry place).

Recipe: Basic Soy Lotion - Sodium Borate in Formulation

You will need:

8 oz Soybean Oil (EU Non-GMO)
1 oz Beeswax Pastilles - White, Unrefined
4 oz Distilled or Purified Water
1.25 ml (1/4 tsp) Borax Powder
5 ml (1 tsp) Germaben IIE (Preservative)
Fragrance (optional)

Phase 1: Combine the soybean oil and beeswax in a double boiler and heat gently until the beeswax has completely melted. Set Aside.

Phase 2: In a separate container, carefully combine the water and borax powder and heat until very hot, but not boiling.

Phase 3: Pour the oil mixture into a deep glass container with high walls (alternately you could use a blender reserved for formulating) and begin stirring slowly. Add the water solution and mix on high with either a stick blender (or in a blender) until a medium thickness lotion has formed. Allow to cool slightly before adding preservative. If you are using fragrance, it can be added at this time.

Phase 4: Pour cooled lotion into a sterilized container and allow to cool completely before applying your closure.

Borax acts as an emulsifier, natural preservative and buffering agent for moisturizers, scrubs and bath salts. It is commonly used in laundry detergent recipes to help soften the water and release stains from clothing. Sometimes used in cream soapmaking recipes and lotions, this is a chemical with toxicity when ingested and should be treated in the same manner with which you treat lye.

Borax cleans by converting some water molecules to hydrogen peroxide.

The pH is approximately 9.5 and produces a basic solution in water, which increases the effectiveness of cleansers.

Independence Day, the only holiday that celebrates the United States, is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Families often celebrate Independence Day with a picnic or barbecue, and take advantage of the day off and in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives.

It is our desire that all of our staff spend time with their families and celebrate this very important holiday. Therefore, all divisions of Smell No Evil, Ltd will be closed 7/3 and 7/4.

During this holiday, our website will remain open to take orders. When we return to work on Monday, we will fill orders as they were received.

Recipe: Basic Bath Fizzie (Bath Bomb)

What you will need :

12 oz Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
4 oz Citric Acid
5 ml (1 tsp) Fragrance Oil
Witch Hazel or Rubbing Alcohol (in a fine mist sprayer)
Liquid Colorant, Mica or Herbal Powder

Soap Mold, Plastic Ornament Ball, Meatballer or Silicone Mini Muffin Pan

Phase 1: Sift Baking Soda and Citric Acid together to get all the lumps out. Be sure and wear gloves, as the Citric Acid may burn and/or dry out your hands. (Work in a well-ventilated area.)

Phase 2: Add mica and/or herbal powder and mix it in. You'll notice that it seems to all disappear. When your finished bath fizzie hits the water, those additives come out in full force. If you are using liquid colorant, add one drop at a time to avoid setting off the fizz and mix thoroughly between drops until the intensity you desire is achieved.

Phase 3: Adding fragrance or essential oils should also be done by the drop. Once your scenting material is well blended, then it is time for the tricky part.

Phase 4: Give the mixture a couple of sprays of Witch Hazel or Rubbing Alcohol. Be careful of adding too much. Once you add too much, there is no going back as it will set off the fizz. Spritz about 3 or 4 times and stir and spritz and stir, being careful not to over spritz before you stir.

Phase 5: When done, the mixture will stick to itself a bit when you pinch it between two fingers. Be very careful to not over-wet the mixture. Witch Hazel is good about not setting off the fizz, but if you give it too much it will destroy the batch. (Adding more of the powdered ingredients won't fix it.)

Carefully, but firmly press the mixture into the mold/ornament/meatballer. Leave the bath bombs in the molds for about 5 or 10 minutes, then flip the mold over and tap it out. They will be fragile at this stage, so work carefully.

Phase 6: Set the fizzies out in a dry place (or in an enclosed room containing a dehumidifier) until you need to wrap them or use them. Let them sit over night before attempting to wrap them up or package them for sale. When storing fizzies, be sure to put them in a very dry place. Some people put them in an oven with very low heat to dry them out well before packaging them. This is a good idea if you live in a very humid area.

Recipe: Detoxifying Body Scrub

You Will Need:

8 oz Dead Sea Salt - Fine
0.50 oz Parsley Powder
0.50 oz Bentonite Clay
3 oz Jojoba Oil, Clear - Organic
3 oz Polysorbate 20
5 ml (1 tsp) Liquipar Optima (Preservative)
5 ml (1 tsp) Caffeine Powder
5 ml (1 tsp) Ocean Scent Fragrance Oil

Phase 1: Combine all dry ingredients in a glass or stainless steel mixing bowl until thoroughly blended. Set aside.

Phase 2: In a separate glass or stainless steel mixing bowl, combine jojoba oil, polysorbate 20 and fragrance. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients from Phase 1.

Phase 3: Add preservative to finished product and mix well to blend throughout. Package product in an airtight, sterilized container of your choice.

FYI: Bentonite clay contains over 70 trace minerals. Externally, Bentonite is used as a clay poultice, mud pack, in the bath, and in skin care recipes. Bentonite clay is believed to have the ability to absorb toxins, impurities, heavy metals and other contaminants from the body.
FYI: The primary chemical constituents of Parsley Seed Powder include chlorophyll, protein, beta carotene, vitamins C and K, iron, magnesium and calcium. Parsley is thought to be soothing, cleansing and detoxifying in baths and skin care products.
FYI: Caffeine Powder has skin firming, toning, and astringent effects. It is thought to work to eliminate puffiness by improving circulation to the surface area to which it is applied.

Recipe: Chai Tea Latte Bath

You Will Need:

12 oz Dead Sea Salt - fine
4 oz Goats Milk Powder
4 oz Natrasorb Bath - Tapioca Starch
5 ml (1 tsp) Chai Tea Fragrance Oil
1.25 ml (1/8 tsp) Radiant Beige Mica

Phase 1: Combine Natrasorb and fragrance oil in a contained blender reserved for cosmetic use only. Pulse until thoroughly blended.

Phase 2: Combine Dead Sea Salt, Goats Milk Powder & Mica in a stainless steel or glass mixing bowl. Combine until thoroughly incorporated.

Phase 3: Combine ingredients of Phase 1 & Phase 2. Mix gently until thoroughly blended. You may wish to don rubber gloves and mix with your hands.

Phase 4: Select an appropriate packaging solution for your product.

Note: Natrasorb is very light and will become airborne if mixed vigorously. Use either an enclosed mixing container, blender or perhaps a sealed ziplock bag to mix without breathing the fragrance laden dust. Alternately, work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask.

16 oz Dead Sea Salt - fine
1 oz Natracorb Bath (Tapioca Starch)
2 oz Goats Milk Powder
0.50 oz Pomegranate Juice Powder
5 ml (1 tsp) Strawberries & Cream Fragrance Oil

Phase 1: In a stainless steel or glass mixing bowl, measure 1 oz Natrasorb Bath and fragrance oil. Mix thoroughly to combine. When completely blended (no lumps), add 8 oz Dead Sea Salt and Pomegranate Juice Powder and mix thoroughly to combine.

Phase 2: In a second stainless steel or glass mixing bowl, combine 8 oz Dead Sea Salt and Goats Milk Powder and mix thoroughly to combine.

Phase 3: Select a container for your salts. To package, you can alternate the scented salts with the milk salts to create a layered effect. If creating a single use product, try layering milk salts on the bottom and scented salts on the top for a bi-layered product. These salts could also be combined so that no layering is necessary when packaging. Be creative!

Note: Pomegranate Fruit Juice Powder contains a wide range of polyphenolic compounds including ellagic acid, flavonoids, anthocyanidins and tannins, as well as Vitamin C. While herbal powders are not FDA approved colorants, they are reasonable additives that happen to provide color to the product base. In this case, Pomegranate Juice Powder produces a pink color.

Stearic acid is useful as an ingredient in making candles, soaps, plastics and cosmetics. Stearic acid is used to harden soaps, particularly those made with vegetable oil.

Esters of stearic acid with ethylene glycol, glycol stearate and glycol distearate are used to produce a pearly effect in shampoos, soaps, and other cosmetic products. They are added to the product in molten form and allowed to crystalize under controlled conditions.

A waxy solid substance, Stearic Acid acts as an emulsifier and thickener for lotions and creams. This stearic acid has been triple pressed and is Vegetable Source, making it appropriate for use in Vegan formulations.

Grandpa Joe...A Man For All Seasons

Joseph Cox Elton, Jr., 80, died June 7, 2008.

"Born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, he was a 50 year member of the Bricklayers Union #7 and a lifelong contractor who worked on numerous building projects in Northeast Ohio. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a supporter of Walsh Jesuit High School. He loved spending time with family, camping, hunting and fishing.
Preceded in death by his parents and a son; he is survived by his wife of 59 years; 2 sisters; 7 children; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren."

Even reading this obituary and seeing it printed in the local papers doesn't make it seem any more realistic that he is really gone.

My grandfather was a great man, father, confidant and a companion to my grandmother for nearly six decades. On Saturday morning at 2:00AM he peacefully closed his eyes and left this world an emptier place. In life he was a teacher and a force to be reckoned with. In death he has become an icon of what we should strive to attain in our own lives. In each of us, his legacy will continue...

Recipe: Citrus Bubbling Bath Salts

You Will Need:

6 oz Dead Sea Salt, Fine
4 oz Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
2 oz Citric Acid
4 oz Lathanol LAL Powder
1 oz Cyclomethicone
1.5 oz Dendritic Salt
5 ml (1 tsp) Citrus Fragrance Oil
20 drops FD&C Yellow #6 - LIQUID
5 drops FD&C Red #40 - LIQUID

Phase 1: Measure the salt, baking soda and citric acid into a glass or stainless steel mixing bowl. Put on a dusk mask, maintain a well-ventilated work area, and carefully measure the Lathanol LAL into the same bowl. Stir gently to combine.

Phase 2: Measure the cyclomethicone into the salt mixture. Stir well until completely combined. There should be no lumps, just a smooth, free-flowing mixture. This may take some time until combined thoroughly.

Phase 3: Combine the dendritic salt, fragrance and colorant together in a separate mixing bowl. When thoroughly blended, combine with the salt mixture and mix until well combined. Be sure to continue wearing your dust mask throughout this process as the Lathanol LAL is a very fine powder and the the resulting dust can irritate airways. Continue mixing until all lumps are crushed and a free-flowing powder results. It may be helpful to sift the final mixture before packaging.

FYI: Lathanol LAL creates foam in bath formulations. This is a very airborne product. You will need a mask and a contained space when making your finished product. It is also sometimes called SLSa.

Note: Do not package in glass, as moisture can set off a chemical reaction (fizzing) between the baking soda and citric acid and could cause a glass container to explode. Do not use metal caps as the salt and citric acid could cause corrosion.

5 ml (1 tsp) Rain Fragrance Oil
10 ml (2 tsp) Kelp Powder

Phase 1: Combine Baking Soda, Citric Acid and Dead Sea Salt in a glass or stainless steel mixing bowl and set aside.

Phase 2: In a separate, smaller glass or stainless steel bowl, combine dendritic salt and fragrance oil until well combined.

Phase 3: Combine contents of previous two mixing bowls together until well blended.

Phase 4: Combine the scented salts with the Kelp Powder until well blended.

Phase 5: Package in a plastic, airtight container of your preference.

Note: Do not package in glass, as moisture can set off a chemical reaction (fizzing) between the baking soda and citric acid and could cause a glass container to explode. Do not use metal caps as the salt and citric acid could cause corrosion.
