Dusting powder is a cosmetic product that can be used to add subtle fragrance to the body while helping to keep you dry. The addition of vanilla powder, lip safe mica and flavor fragrance creates a product that is also edible and adds subtle "shimmer" to the skin. A fun way to enhance romance. Sweet, not sticky, absorbs quickly into the skin, but doesn't leave you feeling dried out. Also referred to as "edible body powder".

You Will Need:

2 oz Natrasorb Bath (Tapioca Starch - Modified)
1.5 oz Vanilla Powder

1 ml Honeycomb Flavor Fragrance

1 ml Radiant Gold Mica (optional)

Dispensing Brush

Combine all ingredients in a zipper style plastic bag. Knead gently to incorporate all ingredients. If your raw materials seem lumpy, use a sifter to smooth out the lumps.

Fill dispensing brush by unscrewing the end and scooping desired amount into reservoir. Attach cap and press dispensing button several times to start the flow of the powder out of the brush end.

To Use: Dispense powder onto brush and apply directly to the skin.

Recipe: Cocoa Butter Massage Bar

A Lotion Bar is a blend of plant oils, exotic butters and wax combined in a formula which remains solid at room temperature.

You Will Need:

2 oz Beeswax Pastilles, White

2 oz Cocoa Butter (Natural)

2 oz Coconut Oil, Fractionated

0.5 oz Vanille Essential Oil Blend

0.15 cc Mica Pigment Powder - Red (Oil Soluble) (optional)

Silicone Mold

Combine wax, butter and coconut oil in a double boiler over medium-low heat until liquified. Remove from heat. Add Vanille Essential Oil Blend and stir well to combine.

Remove a small portion of the mixture to another heat-proof container and add optional colorant (skip this step if you are leaving your bars natural). Whisk well to combine and pour this colored portion into your mold. Allow to set up.

Pour the remainder of your lotion bar mixture over the hardened, colored layer and allow to set up completely before removing from the mold.

To Use: Gently rub over skin. Can be used as a massage tool or as a solid lotion. Product is intended to melt at skin temperature, so store below 70F to maintain shape and consistency.

A lip plumper is a cosmetic product used to make lips appear fuller. In appearance, it ranges from translucent to opaque and tinted. Lip plumpers are used by those with thinner lips when full, "pouty" lips are desired. These products typically work by irritating the thin, delicate skin of the lips with ingredients like menthol, cayenne or cinnamon. This makes the lips swell slightly, which may also diminish the appearance of fine lines in that area. Other perceived benefits include stimulating collagen production and moisturizing. A lip plumper's effects are temporary, so it must be reapplied throughout the day to maintain the results.

Hand Mixer

Add all ingredients to a sterile, glass or stainless steel mixing container. With a hand mixer reserved for formulating, mix ingredients on low until fully incorporated. Package in an airtight container until use.

To Use: Using your index finger, apply scrub to lips in a circular motion. Move in gentle, small circles all the way around the lips. Gently wipe off exfoliant with a tissue or washcloth. Afterwards, apply lip balm to protect fresh skin from drying out. Repeat as needed.

What is "Certified" Gluten-free? (Part 3/3)

We've defined "Gluten-free" and we've defined "Gluten-free Skincare", but what makes a product "Certified Gluten-free" and why does it matter?

The "Certified Gluten-free" logos are registered trademarks for products that do not contain gluten and that has been verified by a third party. These logos are intended to be easily visible to consumers interested in gluten-free products and helps them to shop without constantly consulting ingredient lists; it helps companies recognize a growing gluten-free market; and it helps bring the word "gluten-free"—and the lifestyle it represents—into the mainstream.

One "Certified Gluten-free" logo is administered by Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO). The mark assures that the product contains less than 10-ppm gluten (5-ppm gliadin) and similar proteins from rye and barley as measured by using testing methods that are accepted for gluten testing by analytical associations such as the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC), testing researchers and other such agencies. No testing method is available that measures to zero. Certification is a yearly process based on ingredient review, on-site inspection, and product testing.

Another "Certified Gluten-free" logo is administered by Quality Assurance International (QAI). The QAI Gluten-Free Certification program is appropriate for food producers and manufacturers of gluten-free products. The QAI Gluten-Free Certification program verifies the safe production, storage and transportation of gluten-free products. Monitoring continued compliance is an essential part of the QAI Gluten-Free Protocol. QAI conducts annual monitoring, which includes annual manufacturing facility inspections and product testing.

When products that are not certified make gluten-free claims, often it is the processor themselves that is making the claim. Sometimes manufacturers do their own internal routine testing. Other times, gluten-free claims on labels are not substantiated by any testing. Some manufacturers believe that if their ingredients do not specifically contain gluten, then their product is gluten-free. This behavior can be unsafe if consumed by someone who is sensitive to gluten and believes a product is gluten-free based on conjecture.

The FDA has been working on a definition for ‘gluten-free’ for some time and, ideally, a time will come when
there will be a federal law governing the production and labeling of gluten free foods. Until that happens, taking the proper steps to become "Certified Gluten-free" proves to consumers that you have taken the extra steps to prove that your products are safe for use by gluten-sensitive consumers.

These products, derivatives and processes create a veritable nightmare for someone who is looking to avoid the consumption of gluten. This is why it is so imperative to educate ourselves about a label before we use it to define our product.

Celiacs and those partaking in a gluten-free lifestyle take these choices very seriously. When buying a product labeled as "Gluten-free", the expectation is that it be completely free of gluten and gluten derivatives. We do not expect to find Massage Oil containing Wheat Germ Oil (derived from wheat) labeled as Gluten-free. Nor do we expect to see lip balm containing "natural flavoring" or "vitamins" (both of which may contain gluten) labeled as Gluten-free. However, it does happen and often not intentionally.

The gluten-sensitive have taken the time to learn what contains or may contain gluten and as manufacturers of Gluten-free products, we must take the time to learn it too if we intend to successfully and safely sell Gluten-free Skincare Products.

There are a plethora of chemicals, additives, colorants and flavorings that are either derived from gluten or processed with gluten. You can view a listing of some of these ingredients here (or above). Although this is not a comprehensive list, it is an excellent source which will continue to be updated as new information becomes available. If you currently market your skincare as Gluten-free, this list is an indispensable resource.

This information is solely intended to define Gluten-free Skincare and to educate you regarding the expectation of Gluten-free Shoppers. What Does "Gluten-Free" Mean? (Part 1/3)

Gluten is a protein composite, meaning it is a substance made up of several different proteins, in wheat and related grains in the triticeae family of grassy grains or cereal grains. These grains include (but are not limited to) barley, bulgur wheat, durum, einkorn, farro, graham, kamut, rye, semolina, spelt, and triticale. Between 0.5 and 1.0 percent of people in the United States are sensitive to gluten due to Celiac disease.

Gluten-free, to the medical community refers only to the storage proteins known to damage the small intestine for persons with gluten sensitive enteropathy (celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis). Gluten-free diets avoid the storage proteins found in some grains. Gluten-free products are products safe for persons with celiac disease. They have none or very low levels of the 'gluten' proteins that could be harmful to persons with celiac disease. Celiac disease is not an "allergy to wheat", it is a t-cell mediated reaction (or a type of autoimmune reaction).

The Gluten Free (GF) logo stands for the independent verification of quality, integrity, and purity of products. Products carrying the GF logo certify products with unmatched reliability for meeting strict gluten-free standards. Gluten Free Certification Organization is the leading gluten-free certification program in the world.

Today, trend analysis often refers to the science of studying changes in social patterns, including fashion, technology and consumer behavior.

How Important Is Color To The Bottom Line?

Consider these powerful facts from various marketing studies:

Color increases brand recognition by up to 80%.
Color improves readership as much as 40%.
Color accelerates learning from 55 to 78%.
Color increases comprehension by 73%.
Color ads are read up to 42% more than similar ads in black and white.

The statistics indicate that color is a powerful tool in the marketing of products for sale. Why not use that knowledge to your advantage in 2012? Color is synonymous with "meaning". For clarification, look to the "pink" branding used for breast cancer awareness. Pink can also indicate a level of femininity, as we see in many products geared towards females. Add 12 oz Shower Gel and 1 oz Liquid Pearlizer to a glass pyrex container and mix thoroughly to combine. Add optional fragrance, we used Cinnamon & Clove Fragrance Oil, and stir well to incorporate. Pour pearlized soap into your bottle.

In a separate pyrex container, combine the remainder of your shower gel and colorant. To create a festive red, we combined equal parts FD&C Red #40 and D&C Red #33. We used approximately 8 drops of the red combination for this project. Slowly pour red shower gel into the bottle of pearlized shower gel. Apply closure and allow to sit overnight.

Note: Over time, the red shower gel will slowly sink through the pearlized shower gel to create an ombré effect of concentrated color at the top that gradually becomes lighter at the bottom of the bottle.

Recipe: Festive Layered Lotion Bar

You Will Need:

33 g (1.16 oz) Aloe Butter

33 g (1.16 oz) Beeswax

34 g ( 1.20 oz) Meadowfoam Seed Oil

2 g (0.07 oz) Fragrance Oil (optional)

0.15 cc Mica Pigment Powder - Red (Oil Soluble)

2 - Lotion Bar Tube (Clear) SAN

Combine ingredients in a double boiler over medium heat until melted. Add optional fragrance (we used Jack Frost Fragrance Oil) and remove from heat source. Allow to cool slightly before pouring your first (natural) layer into your push up tubes. Allow to set up almost completely. There should be a thick skin on the top of your first pour.

Return double boiler to heat source and warm gently to re-liquify lotion bar base. When liquid, add colorant and whisk gently to combine. Carefully pour second layer over first natural layer and fill to top. Allow to cool completely.

5 ml Christmas Ale Fragrance Oil

Begin by decorating your bottles. We glued pom pom ribbon to the top and bottom lip of the first bottle and green velvet ribbon to the other.

To make "red" Santa salt, combine 9.5 oz dendritic salt and 5 ml Plum Tarte Fragrance (or fragrance of your choice) in a zip close bag. Squeeze out most of the air, zip closed and knead salt and fragrance oil to incorporate. To make "red" color, we combined equal parts FD&C Red #40 and D&C Red #33, then added it to the scented salt. We used approximately 15 drops of the "red" dye mixture. Keep in mind that using too much dye may stain both your tub and skin. Use a funnel to transfer your "red" salt to the bottle before applying cap to seal.

To make "green" Elf salt, combine 9.5 oz dendritic salt and 5 ml Christmas Ale Fragrance (or fragrance of your choice) in a zip close bag.
