Police say Woodard shot Hightower multiple times during a robbery and then later bragged about it.<br /><br />Woodard was arrested Thursday after police got a tip from the public. Police say he shot Hightower Sunday morning at the EZ Mart at Matlock and Bardin roads in Arlington.<br /><br />Police arrested early Woodard Thursday morning as he was leaving his father’s apartment to take an Uber out of town. Police credit the swift arrest to tips police got after releasing surveillance images of the shooter.<br /><br />"We’re thankful that people had the guts to come forward and say, ‘This is the guy. Recognize the clothing,’" said Arlington Police Lt. Chris Cook.<br /><br />At least one tipster told police Woodard had allegedly told other people about what happened.<br /><br />"And so detectives were able to zero in on him based on these two tips," Cook said.<br /><br />Hightower was working his overnight clerk shift early Sunday morning when police say Woodard entered the store around 3:15 a.m. Without warning, he pulled out a handgun, walked up to Hightower and shot him eight times.<br /><br />Police say Woodard then demanded Hightower open the register, but he was too injured to do so. So police say he shot Hightower one last time, tried to open the register himself, gave up and stole some tobacco products and snacks.<br /><br />"After he shot the clerk, he made a comment ‘why did you look at me? A 15-year-old has been charged in juvenile court.<br /><br />In a news release from the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department Tuesday afternoon, police say the investigation indicated that Sloan, Griggs, Halthon, Bryant and a the 15-year-old went to Bailey’s residence in Oakwood at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday for a drug transaction. The five individuals then tried to rob Bailey, police said. During the altercation that followed, Bailey and Sloan suffered gunshot wounds.<br /><br />The five individuals fled the area in a vehicle following the shootings, but were stopped by a Vermilion sheriff’s deputy on U.S. 150 between Oakwood and Danville.<br /><br />Sloan was then taken to Carle Hospital in Urbana for his injuries. Grasty was arrested in Detroit on Jan. 19 in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Conner Street. <br /><br />He's since been lodged at the St. Clair County Intervention Center and faces charges of open murder and disinterment/mutilation of a corpse. Grasty's bond was set at $750,000.<br /><br />In June 2020, police discovered Orlow's body on the former Navy vessel located at 60 Griswold Street. At approximately 3:30 pm officers spotted the suspect near his house in the 2300 block of Fulton Street and attempted to talk to him.
