Learned from My New Friend Kay

This Week with Kay the Walker

After spending almost six months flat on my stomach in the hopes of regaining my eyesight, two other unfortunate dynamics set in: the manifestation of not using my muscles at all for half a year. Since I love food with a passion and just can’t seem to give up my pizza, I gained 50 pounds. Because I had been immobile, my muscles had atrophied and my whole body had zero strength.

So at the end of 2009, a year in which I missed two whole seasons, I made a New Year’s resolution to walk every day in 2010, without a miss.

At the end of January we were stuck in a deep cold spell. When I double-checked the outside temperature, (hoping the weatherman was wrong), I noticed it was indeed 7F. (For those using Celsius, I believe it is somewhere just above absolute zero.)

Sticking to my resolution, I donned my trusty snowmobile suit, hood, scarf, mitts, and insulated boots. Off I went on a six kilometer walk. I was prepared for a hike to the North Pole and was soon sweating inside my cocoon! Living a block from Lake Ontario, the perpetual north wind which seems to blow in off the lake probably made the effective temperature colder than the top of Everest, but I was warmer than toast.

Canadians know this weather. Each footfall makes a crunching sound. The little amount of exposed skin you didn’t realize you had suddenly starts to feel it is on fire. I adjusted my scarf to cover this bare patch of face and now, totally embedded and safe in my winter ensemble, I peered out of pinholes in my scarf to find my way. I was indeed oblivious to the cold.

It was mid day, usually the time I would see many people out and about, driving into town, or walking their dogs. The streets were like a ghost town. No one had ventured out on such a cold day.

After walking over five kilometers without even seeing a car, and turning into the second to last street from home, I was amazed to suddenly see a small child in a heavy fur coat almost running towards me.

This was strange sight on the winter’s coldest day. Why would a little girl be out in such freezing weather, scurrying like a rabbit, and in an adult coat? Was she okay?

As she approached, with her scarf covering her face like mine I called out, “I wonder who is warmer … you in your fur coat or me in my snowmobile suit.”

She stopped instantly and slowly unwound the scarf from her face. It was not a little girl at all, but a senior citizen!

Relieved, but still wondering what the heck she was doing out in such cold, I asked if she was okay, in case there was an emergency. I was ready to run and get the car.

She replied she was fine and was out on her second of two one mile daily walks, without fail. She introduced herself as Kay.

Explaining I had just made a resolution to do the same thing, she asked how old I thought she was.

Now this question has destroyed many a man, so to be safe, I asked Kay if she was approaching her seventies.

Incredibly, she half-shouted back, “I’m 95!”

I stood there amazed and speechless for a moment. It was Canada’s coldest winter day and here she was out for her second one mile walk of the day!

Finally, I asked, (thinking of her safety), “Why don’t you walk with a friend?”

That is when I learned the valuable lesson what walking truly can do for you.

Kay replied, “I would, but they’re all dead.”

I've decided to make daily walks my annual New Year's resolution!

Way Back When

Raising the Jacques Cartier Bridge

The bridge was too low for ships to pass under ... where the St. Lawrence Seaway was being constructed ... so as traffic continued to commute between Montreal and the South Shore, the bridge was raised and shimmed inches at a time. Marvellous engineering!
