So after nothing completed in the beginning of January 2012, I am now on a sewing roll. I completed my third dress, which is both work appropriate and cruise worthy. I can wear this out for one of the more casual dinner nights since this trip has open dining where you can go to the restaurant of your choice.

I wore it to work with a jacket and received several compliments. Admitedly, I love this fabric, but think it might be just a tad too slinky for the dress pattern. It's comfy and not too clingy, but my next version will be with a less stretchy material for a more fitted look.

I am still working on my Minoru jacket. Tonight I will add the zipper to the collar and attach the hood. Tonight is the last night of my tailored trench coat class and all I have managed to do in the three months is to body fuse the pieces with interfacing and cut out the lining. LOL. Well at least I'm handling things with my Minoru.....stay tuned.
So no long post about this Maxi since I just posted about my original version. I think that both of these dresses will be great for my cruise. Comfy with a bit of style. I really wanted the stripes to be in the other direction for this one, but the fabric would not allow this option. Good thing I have enough fabric left to make a top...like Tasia's new Renfrew top! I ordered the pattern yesterday. My friend Latrice and I are both making her Minoru jacket as part of her sewalong. We are also taking a knits sewing class at the San Diego Continuing Education program starting next week, so this top will be perfect.

I will be making more of these Maxi dresses as they are comfy and perfect for both my cruise and San Diego's weather.

I'm currently working on a new Vogue dress pattern....stay tuned....

First 2012 FO - Mission Maxi

So my first FO for 2012 is the Mission Maxi dress by independent designer Jamie Christina. I have never used her patterns before, so I am happy that I got to use it as the first pattern for the year. I have been really into buying independent lately (like my current Minoru jacket that I'm working on as part of Tasia's sewalong).

For my first version, I made A, which has the godet in the back. It is nice to give this dress a bit more interest since it is a plain fabric. This is part of my knits collection that I'm putting together to wear for my cruise next month.

I already have a Missoni type fabric to make version C, which is a straight cut maxi dress. Hopefully I will have this completed by the end of this weekend as well. I am really feeling the pressure to make some outfits for my trip. This pattern really fits the bill.
I am even on track with the first three days of small steps accomplished. My fabric is from Yardage Town in National City, while my lining fabric was from my stash (originally purchased at Joann Fabrics on sale).

I am also trying to come to terms with my sewing woes (i.e. what to sew for my upcoming cruise). I will most likely make knits and comfy items due to my time constraints. In addition to sewing from my stash of patterns and fabric, I did purchase the Mission Maxi pattern from Jamie Christina. Since we are both in California, it came in one day. Because of its length, I will need to get some fabric, which I was hoping to avoid, but am happy that I will have a perfect cruise dress for my trip. I will try to take a few progress pics of my Minoru as the sewalong progresses....

The DOM Post....

Please excuse my common talk but I have a lot to say. First off DOM stands for diarrhea of the mouth for those of you that just don't know. Yup, I'm a gutter mouth tonight. Sorry....sort of. So, here's my laundry list of issues:

I am going on another cruise with my family. My daughter and I will fly out to NYC to meet up with everyone for a 7-day cruise to the Bahamas on the Norwegian. Doesn't sound like a problem you say, except that I have NOTHING to wear. Seriously, I have lost a lot of weight since having Nilah, but I am not at my pre-cruise weight since the last time I went.

So while my daughter's father is VERY active in her life, we have been parenting separately since before she was even born. That being said, I don't really feel like a single parent since we both take care of her 50/50. I have a good schedule down and have plenty of time for cleaning, general household upkeep, and even sewing. So what's my problem?! I have not sewn a successful piece yet in 2012. I have two items cut and ready to be sewn since two weeks ago.

I am on a mission to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I have lost over 40 pounds, but have more to go. I gained over 10 pounds on my last cruise and got pregnant days after returning, thus gaining weight on top of cruise-weight gain. I have 20 pounds more to go before I'm satisfied. I have been going to Curves since before Thanksgiving. I go 5 times a week during my lunch now that I have weaned my daughter (yup, no more nursing during my lunch break). I am also taking an Aerial Fabrics Acrobatics class from an organization of people that are part of Cirque du Soleil once or twice a week. With all that work-out action, I have no idea what size I will be by the end of next month. So how do i start sewing my cruise wardrobe?

I have been trying to get out and date. *Dating in 2012 sucks*. lol. I am not use to all this drama.

That's all the DOM I have peeps. I think that was plenty or should I be honest and say too much? Any suggestions you can offer on how to plan a cruise wardrobe when you don't know what size you will be is welcome. I need to get moving immediately.

Here is my second to last FO for the year, another McCall's 6400 top. this time for my Sister. I also made her a dress, but she has to take pictures and send it to me first. This is my second time making this shirt. The first time was the black gauzy knit that I had to double layer. This was a quick project that took no more than an hour to make. I like how it is more drapey on her versus me. I made the medium and that seems to fit a more petite frame. I will try to buy the next size up when they go on sale again to get the larger slouchy look.

So I counted my successful FOs for this year and it totaled 61. My goal for 2011 was to make less volume and more quality, but I am happy with most of what I made. I will try to make a post that shows my favorites and the breakdown of what I made.

FO - Vogue 8774 Jeans and McCall's 6400 Knit Top

I completed two new FOs this week. I started a wearable muslin for the Vogue 8774 jeans pattern. This is a great pattern. The only real change I need to do for my fashion fabric is to raise the pockets in the back (my fault) and remove excess in the CB seam to avoid the gaposis issue.

This is a fast and fun top with only one piece. I think the medium might be a bit tight on me, especially since I had to double the gauzy fabric to make it work-appropriate. I have already cut a second version and will try to wear it tomorrow. More pics to come.

FO - Birthday Pendrell Blouse

Wow! I have not posted in over a month. That is unheard of for me. I have not been sewing, well successfully at least. I attempted the <a href="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1267-products-15130.php?page_id=174"target=new>Vogue 1267 and it was a DISASTER. Seriously disappointing. Anywho - I have finally made something and just in time for my birthday. Yesterday (yes, on Pearl Harbor Day) I turned 37. I spent the day working, but did get to go to my Trench Coat Sewing Class. This was great. I am way behind, but will have time to catch up when we go on break for two weeks.

Back to my current project....I completed my Pendrell slowly but surely. It should have taken me two to three hours, but my mojo has been lacking. Still, I did a smidge of work on it over the last few weeks and voila! Success. I am rocking it with jeans and my Nine West mary janes. This was the first pattern from Tasia with <a href="http://sewaholic.net/"target=new>Sewaholic Patterns. She is a real sweetheart with an amazing skill of designing wearable patterns. I have her Minoru pattern waiting to be started during her sewalong.

Here's a close up of the ruffles...

Up next? Who knows. lol. Well - I already have the <a href="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v8774-products-15154.php?page_id=174"target=new>Vogue 8774 skinny jeans cut out, but also want to make <a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6460-products-15230.php?page_id=96"target=new>McCall's 6450 dress, especially since I already bought the fabric. I also have my eye on a few pairs of leggings that I bought patterns for. We will see....
I made two more clovers. The center image and the one on the top left hand corner. I am absolutely hooked on this pattern! Nothing more to say. The middle pair uses stretch cord denim. While I don't celebrate Halloween, Fall is one of my favorite seasons. I managed to take Nilah to the Pumpkin Patch at Bate's Nuts Farm in Valley Center, California this weekend for some Mommy-Daughter time. It's about an hour away from San Diego, but well worth the drive. There were animals in one section in addition to pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and horse rides. Nilah had a ball, despite being a little young to truly get the extent of the activities. I am already excited for next year!

FO - Simplicity 2418 & Clover 3.0

Yes, I have made three clovers in one week. I plan on making several more. I have the fit down to where I like it and think it lends itself to both work and play. This clover version is paired with my new Simplicity 2418 top. I am one happy camper. The outfit is very slimming without compromising comfort. The ankle length looks great with my new 5" Mary Janes to boot.

Stats:

Simplicity 2418 top:
I made a size 14 with zero alterations. The material is a lightweight polyester. Since it is cut on the bias, it has a nice drape. I made the belt extra long.

Clover pants:
I made a straight size 8, reducing the crotch depth by 3/4", adding 3 1/2" at the length mark, and moving the zipper to the back. This version has the front, waistband pockets in a black voille fabric. The pants are made out of a stretch suiting that has some nubby texture to it, which I love.

Up next....another Clover. Yup, I'm hooked. lol

I finally finished my Hitchhiker shawl. I really am happy with it. Way back, I commented on my friend Brandi's gorgeous version, so she surprised me with a copy of the pattern on Ravelry. Thank you Brandilion. Next time Nilah and I visit you in Seattle, I will be rockin' this shawl!

The pattern is by Martina Behm. Here is the information she provides:

Garter stitch. It‘s simple, its warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sock yarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. Because the knitting starts at one end, you can stop anytime, bind off and end up with a useful neckerchief, shawlette or shawl. A perfect project to relax in between more complicated ones, also very suitable for beginners and young knitters.

Brandi was right. This was the perfect "new mommy" project. Although I'm barely finishing it before my LO turns one next month. lol. Regardless, I am happy to have a bit of my knitting mojo back in addition to my sewing.

FO - Versace Inspired Clover

I completed my second version of Clover the other day. This pair is in a bold black and white floral print. It is a bottom weight fabric that has about 3% stretch, so it was perfect for my Clover pattern. I was looking over the new Marie Clair magazine that just came out and they had a piece on Versace-inspired prints including bold pants. I had already put my fabric on the cutting table to breathe before cutting into it - so I am feeling VERY on-trend. lol. Not my usual M.O.

For this pair of Clover pants I did make some adjustments. I made slightly wider seams than my denim pair, including the inseam and side seams. I added an additional 4" of length at the length line, took in the CB seam at the waist to remove a bit of gaposis, and shortened the crotch depth by 3/4 " (or so). Overall, these are a very well fitting pair of pants. The only really issue I am having is that my zipper is getting stuck at the seam of the waist band. I tried to reduce the bulk there, especially since I used hair canvas interfacing for the waistband, but it is still sticking there when I zip it up. Unzipping isn't a problem once they are on though. Any suggestions on how to fix this (and to avoid it in the future)?

Next up? I'm not sure. I have already cut up the fabric and lining for the new Vogue 1267 pattern, but I just haven't been feeling inspired to sew it. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not great at lining patterns or because of all the darts, but I'm just not feeling the oomph to actually make it. Yikes. I hope I figure out something soon.

Oh my - I almost forgot some FABULOUS news for me (when it comes to knitting). I finished my Hitchiker shawl. I am so happy! I wove in the ends last night. I plan on wearing it to work tomorrow, so I'll post some pictures soon.

FO - Clover in Gold Metallic Denim

I finished my muslin for my first attempt at sewing Clover. This is for Colette Pattern's sewalong that is happening <a href="http://www.coletterie.com/sewalongs/welcome-to-the-clover-sewalong"target=new>here at the Coletterie blog. I think that the photos do not do these pants any justice. I have been out and about and have actually had four strangers of all walks of life stop me to comment on how fabulous these pants/jeans look on me. Score!

I purchased some stretch denim a gold metalic color from Yardage Town for this project. I really love the outcome, although it might not be the best material to interpret fitting issues, since the metallic shows a lot of wrinkles naturally. I think the fit is fairly good, although I failed to let my fabric lay out on the cutting table to breathe before cutting it. I think it did grow a tiny bit after wearing it out to dinner with friends.I did get some nice compliments, which is always affirming. Janell claims she rarely EVER gives compliments on clothing so I felt fabulous. I wore it with my second Sorbetto top and a RTW cardigan out to dinner. I took pictures in a different top though, so you can see more of the fit.

Any suggestion on fit? I made a size 8 which is much smaller than normal, but I still think it has room. I made a waist adjustment on this one so that is a size 10. I also added some length to the pants. This pattern is for ankle length pants, but with heels, I needed this extra 2-3" to get it to my ankle. The zipper came in perfectly, but unfortunately it looks like there is a small tear in the zipper fabric, so its getting stuck at the top when I zip it. Since this was just the muslin, I don't know that I'll redo it. With my overly narrow hips, I'm still able to pull them off without unzipping them anyway. That makes me think I could have skipped the waist adjustment. What do you think? I'm laying new fabric out on the cutting table today so it can breathe and grow before I cut it. Should I retry this pair exactly as it and then recheck? I really want the perfect fitting pants. That's what's so great about this sewalong.

Sorry for my long absence. I haven't posted since the end of last month. I have been buying patterns, fabric, vowing to stop buying patterns and fabric, and buying patterns and fabric....ahem. I started this tunic last week and have worked on it a bit here and there in the evenings. Since returning from my business trip in Florida, I have been fighting to stay healthy. While I am still a bit run down, I'm getting my stride back.

Here is my completed project using Simplicity 2365. This tunic has a lot of great details including piping at the center of the chest, princess seams, and tabs to pull up the sleeves. I also decided to have a clean finish on the inside and used french seams. I could have just serged it, but wanted a more polished look on the inside of this one, to match all of the outside details. I can see more of these in my future, especially in a nice crisp fabric. This was also the first time that I used my piping foot for my Bernina. Worked like a charm! I've paired my tunic with an old pair of leggings that I made in 2009. Still love 'em!

For my next project I am making the new Vogue 1267. I am using a crepe back satin fabric in a rich purple color with a lavendar charmeuse lining. I'm hoping this will come together quickly as I have high hopes to wear it to a meeting I have on Wednesday.

Last Post for Self-Stitched September 2011

So I completed my SSS11 challenge and manage to wear a different self-stitched item every day for the month of September. It was a good challenge as I now know that I rely on a few key pieces of clothing to keep in heavy wear-rotation.

Here is the breakdown for this last week going clockwise:

* New Look 6823 knit dress
* Butterick 5627 snake print Lanvin knock-off dress (with purchased cardigan)
* Simplicity 2315 skirt and February Lady Sweater in Cascade 220 yarn
* Buterick 5614 stretch cotton pants (with store bought button down shirt)
* Zephyr's Wicked sweater in soy silk yarn ( with store bought pants)

That's all I have for now. The Butterick pants are a new creation. I like them, but they already feel a bit loose. I have a feeling that I'm always a bit heavier or bloated in the evening when I sew. Everything fits perfectly at night and then hangs a bit looser in the morning when I'm dressed for work. lol

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Self-Stitched September 2011 - Eight More Days

Here are some more of my outfits that I have worn for Self-Stitched September. Most of these were worn during my conference in Florida or over the weekend at home. The only new item this week is Simplicity 2444. I saw an amazing dress at <a href="http://experimentsandaccidents.wordpress.com/completed-projects/the-anthro-copy/"target=new>Experiments and Accidents. I decided to copy her Anthro-inspired dress. I love it head to toe.

Here's my breakdown for the SS11 outfits going clockwise:

* Self-drafted skirt & Simplicity 2590 cardigan
* Butterick 5496 purple tunic top (worn under store bought jacket)
* McCall's 6264 pink knit dress
* Butterick 5327 pink tuck top
* New Look 6875 top and skirt (worn under store bought vest)
* Butterick 5495 swirl knit top
* Simplicity 3775 knit print dress (worn under store bought sweater)
* Simplicity 2444 polka dot dress (worn under store bought wrap)

Overall, I am very happy with my week's worth of outfits. I have still kept to my goal of wearing a different self-made item each day. I have only six more days to go...

FO New Look 6875 & Self-Drafted Skirt

I have been sewing quite a bit these days. I am even taking a sewing class on Wednesdays at the San Diego Continuing Ed. Our class is working on a lined trench coat with welt pockets and properly placed topstitching. This is perfect for me since I have yet to make welt pockets and my topstitching is far from perfect. lol. I am participating in Self-Stitched September. My goal is one self-made item a day, but also to only wear my self-made item once during the month. For this reason, I have been adding a fair amount of separates to my wardrobe this month. It's been fun actually. Once my little one falls to sleep, I get cracking. I am one of those people that need minimal sleep to function. The pants I posted in a previous post were started at 12:30 in the morning when I had to be at work at 7:30 am the next day.

Now this first skirt was actually started last year. It's a self-drafted skirt with a front pleat and red elastic waistband. I have a dream of one-day creating my own patterns for sale. I am not naturally gifted in this area, it will be a labor of love down the road. I am happy with how this came out and am thankful for Self-Stitched September as it was the only reason I dug it out of my drawer to wear on Saturday. I am pairing it with my Simplicity 2590 Cardi, which was a pretty popular pattern a while back.

Last night (again - after little girl was asleep) at around 11:00 pm I decided that I wanted a new outfit to wear to work with my new shoes. I recently purchased New Look 6875 which is a simple pattern of coordinates. I made the top and skirt in a flash. The material was purchased at the new Yardage Town off of Morena Blvd. It's pretty light-weight, so I'm sure I'll be using this outfit to weigh in at Weight Watchers when I'm looking to show some weight loss *grin*. I'm pairing the outfit with one of my infinity scarves, so you can't see the front gathers, but it is flattering for sure. After seeing the pictures, I may take the skirt in on the sides a bit. Other than that, it's perfect for me.

I am heading off to a trade show for work in Florida this week. Booo! While the trade show is a good one for work, this will be the first time Nilah and I will really be apart. I know she will have a bunch of fun with her Daddy, while I'm gone, but that doesn't really make me feel any better. Boooo! My only consolation is that I can wear dresses that zip up the back while I'm at the trade show. I have made three new items this week. My last post showed two of them. I also made another pair of Butterick 4789 pants in a drapey taupe fabric. Since I plan on wearing different self-made items this entire month (no repeats of self-made items), I have been trying to add to my collection. lol. Here's the breakdown for the last seven days.

Clockwise:

* Collete Pattern Sorbetto top + Butterick 4789 pants
* Butterick 5562 top + New Look 6735 pants
* Simplicity 2187 jumper dress
* Butterick 5497 top
* Butterick 5496 top + New Look 6005 pants
* Vogue 1179 dress + infinity scarf
* McCall's 5662 tunic top + New Look 6735 pants

I am currently working on a dress to wear to my trade show next week. Since I will not have little girl with me, I can wear dresses that are not nurse friendly for a bit. Ahhhh, the thoughts of a new mommy. lol. Stay tuned...

FO - New Look 6005 Linen Blend Pants & Second Simplicity 2187 Jumper Dress

So my SSS11 (Self-Stitched September) challenge is going well so far. I am trying to not only wear one self-made piece every day, but also try not to duplicate an item during the month. For that reason, I have been adding a few new projects every week. I am still nursing and seem to be picking either separates to make or dresses that have a wrap or crossed neckline. Of course I do have a dress that I cut fabric for that will not be baby approved, but perfect for Mommy on her work trip to Florida next week. Here's to hoping I get to it before I leave on Tuesday.

I made another pair of pants. This time I tried a different pattern. I picked up New Look 6005 at Joann's last week. The fabric is a nice drapey, textural linen blend. I paired it with my first Butterick 5496 top that I made earlier this year. I really love how I looked in this outfit. I felt very modelesque.

Here is my second version of the Simplicity 2187 jumper dress. I added 4 inches to the length to make it more work appropriate. Since this is my second time making it this month, it went together fairly quickly. I had a good time making this one and enjoyed the way it is comfy, yet dressy. Another great work dress that can also do double duty for going out on the town. I have plans to make one more of these dresses. I will probably go down a size though. The first two I made were both a size 14, but I noticed that the second one felt a little loose, even though the fabric is similar. Hopefully the Weight-Watchers is working. lol. Stay tuned.

FO - Second Simplicity 7092 & SSS Days 1-9

Self-Stitched September Breakdown (clockwise):
* Simplicity 2187 - knit jumper dress
* McCall's 6076 - cowl neck top
* Butterick 5456 - black,red, & white knit dress
* Vogue 8597 - brown cowl neck top
* BWOF 5-2010-105 knit dress & Ella Rae Fushion knit shrug
* Simplicity 7092 - silky, striped pants
* Simplicity 2554 - knit ruffle top
* Simplicity 7092 - pink linen pants
* Colette Sorbetto patatern - top without pleat

I have been a busy bee these past few weeks. First off, I am doing Self-Stitched September. I also managed to make another pair of pants using the Simplicity 7092 pattern. The funny thing is that my favorite patterns this year have been by Simplicity. Hands down. Normally, they are my least favorite of the big 4, but may have become a true Simplicity convert at this rate. I also went to Seattle for the Labor Day Weekend! My former roomie <a href="http://knittingforhealth.blogspot.com/"target=new>Brandi flew me up to visit her.

So I have been sewing, but not really feeling like I have been happy with the projects' outcome. That was until Simplicity 2187. I cannot express how happy I am with this one! It was an easy project that I sewed up on Sunday evening. I cut the pattern and fabric for a week ago. If I knew how quick and easy it was, I would have cut TWO different fabrics to make another one immediately after the first one. Speaking of fabric - this knit was bought a year ago for a cardigan. When I dug it out, I knew it would be perfect for this jumper dress.

I have received a lot of compliments on this one. It seems to be slimming too. Bonus! Comfy AND slimming? Who would have thunk it. lol I have plans for this pattern in my near future for sure. I will also try the pants-jumper for this pattern also.

As far as Self-Stitched September goes...I can't decide if I will commit to doing it or not. The funny thing is that I have managed to wear at least one piece of clothing that I have sewn or knit everyday since Me-Made-June. So why not join in for this one? I think I have been slacking more on the photo taking. Well, now that I think about it, my co-worker is back to work from maternity leave and she always <strike>makes me look skinnier than I really am in real-life</strike> takes one striking photo after the next. Count me in....

FOs - Simplicity 3833 Dress and Simplicity 7092 Pants

Here are two more FOs to share. The first is my Jackie-O inspired dress. I love how the shaping is on this one. I used a 1960s retro reprint pattern from Simplicity (3833). The fabric is a heavy cotton that I picked up at Ikea. I wore it to church with a white cardigan and my hair swept up and felt fabulous. I believe I made a size 14 and did a mini-FBA on this one. I could have probably gone a tad bit bigger on my bust alteration, but am sure it will be fine once <strike>the watermelons reduce</strike> I finish nursing.

30 minutes before going to church, I also decided to sew these Simplicity pants that I cut out the night before. I am in love with them! I went to Yardage Town to find a white seersucker fabric to make a second pair, but came back empty handed. This is one of Simplicity's 1-hour patterns. It is for pants and shorts. I made the medium and omitted the drawstring.

The pants are pajama comfy, but pack a nice punch for style. The fact that two people told me that I looked really skinny in them - BONUS! Yes, that might be the reason for wanting a few more pairs....lol. Actually, I was reading about silky pants being a fall trend. I am all for it! Here's a <a href="http://www.net-a-porter.com/am/product/111070?cm_mmc=LinkshareUS-_-ProductFeed-_-Seventh_Wonderland-_-Pants&siteID=J84DHJLQkR4-xrDlxvoTivCpZQYaLWkuoA&siteID=25ZRSXYPVYg-l7wwxTVd_va7e9ldHBkbmg"target=new>link to a pair I saw on Net-a-Porter.

I have been sewing. I have been a little bit of a lazy bones after work - just relaxing with little girl, but I have stilled managed to get some new pieces made. My latest items are cropped pants and another version of the Sorbetto top. Actually, if you see the cropped pants picture, you'll notice the makings of another Sorbetto. I hadn't hemmed it at the time of the photo, but it is completed now. I hope to get a pic update soon. I added about 2 1/2 - 3 inches of length this sorbetto and omitted the bias binding. For the cropped pants, I moved the zipper to the side instead of the back.

Right now I'm planning on making a flowing, simple pair of pants that will transition into the fall weather. After that, I want to make a tunic top using a free burdastyle pattern. Let's just hope I get behind my sewing machine to make it happen. lol
