Unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have been the subject of fascination, controversy and disdain for many years. Almost every culture known to mankind at different periods in history has experienced and recorded the presence of strange unknown objects in the sky.
Even though 95% of all UFO reports are proven to be fallacious, every now and then there is the report of a sighting that sends a few shivers up and down even the most conservative spines.
Such an occurrence happened last month (July 7th) when a UFO disrupted air traffic over Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou, the capital city of east China’s Zhejiang Province.
All outbound fights were suspended after air traffic controllers spotted the fiery object skimming across the sky. The municipal government abruptly closed the airport, pending an investigation into the matter.
The UFO was detected in the sky about 9pm, causing flights to be re-routed to other airports in Ningbo and Wuxi cities.
The Chinese Internet lit up with possible theories concerning the identity and purpose of this strange object. They ranged from a hoax incurred by the US to an actual planetary invasion.
The airport soon resumed normal activities, but something lingered that altered the texture of everyday life and it is still there, hanging like an invisible cloud over conventional thoughts and understanding.
To date, there has been no public statement concerning the resolution of any investigation or scientific inquiry.

Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto's "1945-1998" is an animated map showing the 2,053 nuclear explosions that took place around the world during the 20th century, from the detonations at Alamogordo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 to the tests conducted by India and Pakistan in 1998.

The month and year are displayed in top right corner, and the number of nuclear explosions for each country appear next to the flags in the margins. The total is displayed in the bottom right corner.
The numbers reveal that, on average, 1 nuclear explosion occurred every 9.6 days during the 54-year period, with the greatest activity in 1958 and 1962.
The time map does not include the two nuclear tests conducted by North Korea in October 2006 and May 2009, nor does it include the dozens of subcritical nuclear tests (explosions that do not produce a sustained nuclear chain reaction) conducted in recent years by the US/UK and Russia.

Although not unheard of, the incidence of polydactylism, or being born with extra fingers and toes, doesn’t happen every day. The word derives from the ancient Greek (polus=many and daktulos=finger). A twelve-year-old boy named Ouyang Guangchun from Songpo village in southern China’s Hunan province was born with 12 fingers and 12 toes and has lived his life with all of his dactyls intact. His parents have declined to permit the surgery because they feel the extra digits do not in any way interfere with their son’s quality of life or his ability to use his hands or feet.

The boy is the only member his family to be so afflicted with extra fingers and toes. While it is not unusual for children to be born with additional digits, it is not common for those extra digits to look and function normally, which they do in Ouyang’s case.
“If people don’t look at his hands or feet carefully, they can hardly tell anything, as the extra digits are growing naturally along with the others,” his mother told the press.

Li Wei (born 1970, Hubei, China) is a contemporary artist from Beijing. His work often depicts him in apparently gravity-defying situations. Wei started off his performance series ‘Mirroring’ and later on took off attention with his ‘Falls’ series which shows the artist with his head and chest embedded into the ground. His work is a mixture of performance art and photography that creates illusions of a sometimes dangerous reality. Li Wei states that these images are not computer montages and works with the help of props such as mirror, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics.

The thought of drinking from a glass containing a huge spider is enough to make most people feel a bit shaken - up but this Cambodian tuk-tuk driver seems to be enjoying his favourite cocktail.

The arachnophobe’s nightmare is made using rice wine, jack fruit and a tarantula – which many Cambodians believe can help your heart and work as an aphrodisiac. Photographer Tim Whitby, who took the pictures, said the tarantulas are added live to the mixture to preserve their freshness. They are also fried and sold at roadside kiosks.

The trade for spiders as food has been in effect since the 1970's in Cambodia - but only very recently have tourists been finding a way to see where the spiders are hunted in the nearby countryside. This particular tuk-tuk driver has even started offering spider-hunting tours.Mr Whitby said: ‘I bought a spider from a particularly greasy looking tray and pulled off a couple of legs. They tasted sweet and a little crunchy.’

Pepper trumpets, leek violins, celery bongos, cucumberphones, pumpkin drums – these are just a handful of instruments used by the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra to entertain audiences everywhere, with their organic music. This one-of-a-kind music group was born when its current members were students. At first they started playing vegetable instruments, as a joke, but quickly realized they might be on to something, and took their work more seriously.

The dozen members of the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra carve their instruments themselves, using whatever vegetables are available, at the location of their performance. After 12 years of making vegetable music, the group has learned what type of vegetables sound better in every country, judging by a range of factors, such as temperature and water content.
The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra needs 70 kilograms of fresh vegetables for every concert, and three hours to carve the instruments they use. But their music wouldn’t exist without modern technological equipment, like amplifiers or sophisticated microphones. Combined with the squeaking of cucumbers, crackling of cabbage leaves and banging of aubergines, they create a hypnotic type of music, described as something between techno music and whale songs.

After fastening two metal hooks into his lower eyelids with ropes attached to the amphibian plane, he pulled the aircraft, which weighed half a ton, in less than one minute for sixteen feet.

“I have pulled a car with my eyelids before, but this was the first time with an aeroplane…To be honest, I didn’t use my full strength and I think I could probably pull it three times the distance.
