On May 21, 2015 MOHAN Foundation was invited to address the congress party members on organ donation at Lovely Public School, Krishna Nagar, New Delhi. The campaign on organ donation was organized in remembrance of former Prime Minister Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his 24th death anniversary.

Dr Anshu Gupta (Block Vice President, Mahila Congress, Preet Vihar, Delhi) took the initiative to organize the talk. She is also associated with Dr Subhash Gupta (Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon & Director CLBS, Apollo Hospital) as a liver Transplant Coordinator. The main objective of the campaign was to spread awareness on organ donation amongst the party members.

The program started with presentation on basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation by Dr. Suresh Singhvi (Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, SGRH, New Delhi). Dr. Akshay Gupta (Consultant, Liver Transplant, SGRH) spoke on technical aspects of liver transplantation. Foundation’s representative gave information on organ donation, eye donation, cardiac death/brain death, donor card and types of donations. The counselor also handled individual queries in a professional manner.

Arvinder Singh Lovely and Anurudh Lal were few of the prominent Congress members who attended the program. Around 15-20 people attended the session and few donor cards were picked up.

India is one of the top medical tourism destinations in the world.

Liver transplant is one of the most popular procedures medical tourists visit India for.

Liver transplant in India costs much cheaper as compared to developed nations like US, UK or Canada.

Laws related to organ donors vary from country to country. In India there are certain requirements that need to be fulfilled before a liver transplant can be done for patients from foreign country.

Below are the few prerequisites for liver transplant in India:

As per Indian law, liver donor needs to be relative of the patient therefore donor also need to travel along with the patient for liver transplant.

The patient will have to provide documents/certificate from their local authorities to certify the relationship.

The relatives have to be of the first degree i.e. Mother, father, sister, brother, children or spouse.

This certificate will have to be endorsed by the Embassy of the respective country. The hospital will forward these documents to the DMER- Directorate of Health Services who give the final sanction for the transplant.

Blood group of the recipient and donor should match.

The recipient and donor will need to undergo Basic medical examination to assess their medical status

Apart from the above mentioned things, listed below may be required by the liver transplant surgeon:

Information like age, blood group, height and weight of both recipient and donor.

Medical reports of the patient like USG findings on Portal venous system and liver, Alpha Feto Protein and 2D echo report.

Once things are finalized the both donor and recipient need to visit India for the transplant. Liver transplant is done after the patient is admitted to the hospital. Patient may require staying for a period of three weeks.
