Pada 5 September 1977, NASA meluncurkan spacecraft Voyager 1, dengan tujuan tidak diketahui. Muatannya hanya berupa kumpulan rekaman yang dipilih oleh ahli astronomi US Carl Sagan.

Kumpulan rekaman ini dirancang untuk bertahan selama milyaran tahun dan berpotensi memberikan sekilas gambaran tentang umat manusia kepada makhluk hidup di luar planet bumi.

Rekaman-rekaman itu dicetak dalam piringan emas dari tembaga agar tidak mengalami korosi, yang berisi antara lain:

· Musik Internasional (Termasuk di dalamnya musik dari Indonesia berjudul "Puspawarna" karangan Mangkunegara IV, yang dipersembahkan oleh Gamelan Pura Paku Alaman, arahan K.R.T. Wasitodipuro)

· Ucapan salam dalam 55 bahasa (termasuk Bahasa Indonesia, yang disuarakan oleh Ilyas Harun, dengan kalimat: “Selamat malam hadirin sekalian, selamat berpisah dan sampai bertemu lagi dilain waktu”)

· Bunyi gunung berapi, gempa bumi, guntur, lumpur mendidih

· Bunyi hujan, hempasan ombak samudera, tiupan angin yang melalui pohon ek.

· Bunyi suara ikan paus, burung-burung, jangkrik, kodok, gajah, simpanse, hyena, anjing liar

· Bunyi kereta, traktor, bis, mobil

· Bunyi suara tertawa, detak jantung manusia, langkah kaki

· Bunyi suara kecupan/ciuman

· Kumpulan gambar rincian kehidupan manusia di bumi termasuk diantaranya adalah gambar ibu yang menyusui, demonstrasi tindakan makan, minum, menjilat, gambar taj mahal, tembok besar cina, para wanita dari pegunungan andes, hingga penari bali.

· Kumpulan gambar yang mengindikasikan skala waktu, ukuran atau massa, komposisi kimiawi dan sebagainya.

Pada 27 September 2013, pukul 12.15PM Central Standard Time, setelah 36 tahun melakukan perjalanan angkasa, Voyager 1 akhirnya keluar dari Sistem Tata Surya kita dan masuk dalam wilayah yang belum terpetakan.

Namun sebelum meninggalkan Tata Surya kita, pada 14 Februari 1990, Voyager 1 mengambil foto Planet Bumi dari Kejauhan 6 milyar kilometer. Ya, titik biru pudar itu adalah kita. The Pale Blue Dot is our home. Mari kita pelihara dan hargai Planet Bumi kita, the only home we’re ever known.

MY TOP 6 MAC NEUTRAL EYESHADOW PICKS

Out of all mac eyeshadow I have these are the shades, that I love the most and use the most and I know that are really really popular in term of customer coming to buy them. Also listed under MAC's bestselling eyeshadow shades on maccosmetics.com.

Shroom is a lightly shimmered beige color and has a satin finish. It's great on the lid for the ultra neutral look, and perfect for natural yet glam bridal makeup look. It also makes for an excellent brow bone highlighter for just about any look. It def an essential for anyone looking for neutral shadow. Shroom is listed as 8 Must have MAC Neutral Eyeshadow by temptalia.com, based on quality, univesality, uniqueness amongst the line.

Ricepaper is a smooth, shimmery peachy beige and has a frost finish. It's amazing brow bone highlighter, great to highlight the inner tear duct. It also makes an awesome lid color too for daily flawless makeup look. Ricepaper is also listed as 8 Must have MAC Neutral Eyeshadow by temptalia.com.

Naked lunch is a beautiful warm of minimal pink with shimmer (frost finish). It's one of my favorite colors to wear as a wash color. It's also great all over the lid. It adds soft shimmer perfect for super natural look.

Woodwinked is the softest gorgeous bronze color I've ever used with a veluxe pearl finish. It's so soft but not powdery and the texture almost feels creamy since it has the benefit of the veluxe finish. It also produces a great pearlized effect. I looks great on the lid during the day and creates a sultry smokey eye at night. It's very versatile. It's said that woodwinked has been the best selling shade in the entire world.

Satin Taupe is a brownies grey color with a slightly dark brown purple reflection. Very wearable and works with so many different color. Makes for a great one eyeshadow or as a wash over. Can be worn on crease or outer v. One of my favorite ways of wearing it is by applying a dark brown base to my lids and layering satin taupe over top and creates a smokey taupe eye look. It's listed as Top 10 MAC Neutral Eyeshadows in makeupgeek.com.

Carbon. MAC Carbon is my all time favorite black eyeshadow. I recently found out that a lot of makeup geek said that MUG-Corrupt is the blackest black and the best black eyeshadow they've ever seen. For me MAC Carbon is still the best. Why? Because it's a matte black eyeshadow, means there is absolutely no glitter, no sparkle, no effects. When something is matte, it has individual color with nothing added. That makes MAC Carbon is perfect for blending and wonderful for smokey look. It's probably not as pigmented as MUG-Corrupt, but that's kind of the reason I love it, because I have more control over how heavy it applies and I'm better able to blend it out.

So yeah.. Christmas is around the corner.. many people are still in a tizzy, trying to find that perfect gift, while others are discovering they still have a long list to shop for. This last minute situation often leaves them hapless.

So I thought I will share my opinion of some cosmetics I’ve been using for a while, that I think are perfect christmas gifts for makeup lovers this year. Plus I’ll also show you some swatches.

They’re not necessarily what I would say everyone should buy for christmas gifts to their love ones or friends. But if you’re looking for a gift for makeup lover, then I hope this review helps to give you a few ideas before you hit the shop on Christmas Eve looking for last minute gifts X

REVLON PHOTOREADY EYE PRIMER + BRIGHTENER

It’s one of Photoready collections from REVLON. It’s a primer and a brightener in one. Slick it under eyes and freshen up eyes or add it to bare lids to brighten that area up as well as prime for shadow.

Love it because:

Has a matte finish and soft texture, creamy, easy to blend and hydrating. Brighten up tired eyes. It’s kinda primer slash concealer. Who doesn't want a single product to multitask at a ton of different things, right?

Hate it because:

It’s a bit too pricey. Also I don’t like the packaging. It’s the kind where you twist the end and the primer comes out of a little brush. It's very hard to control how much product will come out. When I opened it the first time, I had to twist about 5 - 6 times, and a lot of product gushed out. Tips: twist it 2 – 3 times and be patient untill the product comes out.

Love it because:

Creamy, glides on effortlessly (no pulling, tugging or fading) and it’s affordable!! It’s pencil, so can be sharpened. It’is an excelent multi-tasker. Its intended purpose as an eyeliner that also doubles as an eyeshadow. But for years I’ve known that people have actually been using this as an eyeshadow base and also as a highlighter. Well, for me Cottage Cheese ROCKS used in both capacities.

Hate it because:

It easily gets dirty in your make up bag because of the white packaging. Has to be sharpened. It’s hard to find because it sells out. It doesn’t available in NYX Indonesia Official Online Store (www.nyx-makeup.com)

Hate it because:
The lighter colors are not as pigmented as the dark one

Long wear and waterproof. Has rich and blendable formula. Creamy and smooth texture. Silkier and softer finish. In short , it creates beautifully defined lines. Plus, it’s affordable.

Hate it because:

Poor made plastic packaging, has a tendency to dry out quickly. Tip: Always try to keep the cap closed as soon as you get the creme eyeliner you need on the brush.

Red is a must color for Christmas. So red lipstick or red lipgloss is a must have makeup for lips this christmas. As red lipstick and red lipgloss are very pigmented and hard to remove, so here is the tip to easily remove red lipstick or red lipgloss: wet a cotton ball with milk and gently wipe cotton ball over your lips.

Love it because:

It has intense cherry red shade with a glossy finish which is richly pigmented. It will change the entire look dramatically. This color in my opinion looks best on medium to dark skin tone. If you have tan skin like mine, this bright lipstick will lighten up you face. The formula is smooth and glides on like butter, making any face look instantly elegant and glamorous.

Hate it because:

It doesn’t stay longer than 4 hours. It melts easily, especially in the kind of weather that tropical countries have.

REVLON SUPERLUSTROUS LIPSTICK - CREME 740 CERTAINLY RED

Price:

Love it because:

It’s a pretty true red lipstick. Unless you are a huge fan of sheer lipsticks, this isn’t for you, because this one is extremely bold and opaque, which is i love. Because for me there is no point wearing red lipstick if it’s sheer. The texture is smooth and creamy. It leaves your lips soft but without the super glossy look. It’s definitely working beautifully with neutral eyes and it’s super super inexpensive.

Hate it because:

The packaging is average. The color tag at the bottom is not in my opinion always a true match. Some people find it’s not too moisturizing and makes their lips dry. You need to be prepared to fix it up afterwards. You can easily look like a child playing with makeup if you aren’t careful applying it.

REVLON COLORBURST LIPGLOSS – 018 (FIRE)

Love it because:

It’s a creamy bright red, not so sticky and very pigmented. The texture is thin (weightless) and moist, It creates medium shine effect. Can be built into an opaque high gloss, because it’s having extreme smootness and excellent light reflecting qualities. The color stays on 4 – 5 hours on my lips (without eating and drinking). The applicator is awesome. It picks up just enough product and the fuzzy part feels so soft.

Hate it because:

Revlon states that this gloss is intended to give 5 times the shine of patent-leather, but in my experience, I don’t get that effect. So if you’re looking for the glass-like shine this may not be for you. The scent is slightly chemically, but it dissipated after a few minutes.

Love it because:

The color is super pretty, it’s lovely soft white. It has a really subtle but distinct shimmer. Look good under red shatter.

Hate it because:

It’s hard to find. I found that even after 3 coats the polish still wasn’t very even, but it’s white polish which is in my opinion is hard to apply. Tips: Apply a thin coat first, then wait untill it dries. The apply a second coat, shoud be thicker then the first one, wait until it dries. Finally apply a third coat (i normally wait overnight before applying the third coat, but this is not necessarily what you should do).

OPI RED SHATTER – NL E55

Love it because:

The formula shatters pretty nicely and dries well. Look good over white and silver or lighter colors. It brings out the bottom color beneath and makes it stand out more.

Hate it because:
Thinner in consistency than black shatter. It's hard to blend with other colors (your color options are very limited), only lighter colors will blend well with it. It doesn't really show over dark colors. Tips: try to apply over light cremes, light peaches and or shimerry or metallic polishes. Must apply on completely dry polish and apply quickly.

KONSELING KRISIS PADA REMAJA

I. Pendahuluan.

Selama rentang kehidupan manusia, telah terjadi banyak pertumbuhan dan perkembangan dari mulai lahir sampai dengan meninggal dunia. Dari semua fase perkembangan manusia tersebut, salah satu yang paling penting dan paling menjadi pusat perhatian adalah masa remaja. Para orang tua, pendidik dan para tenaga profesional lainnya mencoba untuk menerangkan dan melakukan pendekatan yang efektif untuk menangani para remaja ini. Lalu ada apakah di masa remaja ini? Seberapa besarkah pentingnya untuk menangani masa remaja dan seberapa besar pengaruhnya untuk kehidupan dimasa depan individu tersebut?

Masa remaja yang dimaksudkan merupakan periode transisi antara masa anak-anak dan masa dewasa. Batasan usianya tidak ditentukan dengan jelas, sehingga banyak ahli yang berbeda dalam penentuan rentang usianya. Namun, secara umum dapat dikatakan bahwa masa remaja berawal dari usia 12 sampai dengan akhir usia belasan ketika pertumbuhan fisik hampir lengkap.

Salah satu pakar psikologi perkembangan Elizabeth B. Hurlock (1980) menyatakan bahwa masa remaja ini dimulai pada saat anak mulai matang secara seksual dan berakhir pada saat ia mencapai usia dewasa secara hukum. Masa remaja terbagi menjadi dua yaitu masa remaja awal dan masa remaja akhir. Masa remaja awal dimulai pada saat anak-anak mulai matang secara seksual yaitu pada usia 13 sampai dengan 17 tahun, sedangkan masa remaja akhir meliputi periode setelahnya sampai dengan 18 tahun, yaitu usia dimana seseorang dinyatakan dewasa secara hukum.

Banyaknya permasalahan dan krisis yang terjadi pada masa remaja ini menjadikan banyak ahli dalam bidang psikologi perkembangan menyebutnya sebagai masa krisis. Pada masa ini perubahan terjadi sangat drastis dan mengakibatkan terjadinya kondisi yang serba tanggung dan diwarnai oleh kondisi psikis yang belum mantap, selain dari pada itu periode ini pun dinilai sangat penting bahkan Erik Erikson (1998) menyatakan bahwa seluruh masa depan individu sangat tergantung pada penyelesaian krisis pada masa ini.

II. Karakteristik Masa Remaja

Sebagai periode yang paling penting, masa remaja ini memiliki karakterisitik yang khas jika dibanding dengan periode-periode perkembangan lainnya. Adapun rinciannya adalah sebagai berikut :

a. Masa remaja adalah periode yang penting

Periode ini dianggap sebagai masa penting karena memiliki dampak langsung dan dampak jangka panjang dari apa yang terjadi pada masa ini. Selain itu, periode ini pun memiliki dampak penting terhadap perkembangan fisik dan psikologis individu, dimana terjadi perkembangan fisik dan psikologis yang cepat dan penting. Kondisi inilah yang menuntut individu untuk bisa menyesuaikan diri secara mental dan melihat pentingnya menetapkan suatu sikap, nilai-nilai dan minta yang baru.

b. Masa remaja adalah masa peralihan

Periode ini menuntut seorang anak untuk meninggalkan sifat-sifat kekanak-kanakannya dan harus mempelajari pola-pola perilaku dan sikap-sikap baru untuk menggantikan dan meninggalkan pola-pola perilaku sebelumnya. Selama peralihan dalam periode ini, seringkali seseorang merasa bingung dan tidak jelas mengenai peran yang dituntut oleh lingkungan. Misalnya, pada saat individu menampilkan perilaku anak-anak maka mereka akan diminta untuk berperilaku sesuai dengan usianya, namun pada kebalikannya jika individu mencoba untuk berperilaku seperti orang dewasa sering dikatakan bahwa mereka berperilaku terlalu dewasa untuk usianya.

c. Masa remaja adalah periode perubahan

Perubahan yang terjadi pada periode ini berlangsung secara cepat, peubahan fisik yang cepat membawa konsekuensi terjadinya perubahan sikap dan perilaku yang juga cepat. Terdapat lima karakteristik perubahan yang khas dalam periode ini yaitu, (1) peningkatan emosionalitas, (2) perubahan cepat yang menyertai kematangan seksual, (3) perubahan tubuh, minat dan peran yang dituntut oleh lingkungan yang menimbulkan masalah baru, (4) karena perubahan minat dan pola perilaku maka terjadi pula perubahan nilai, dan (5) kebanyakan remaja merasa ambivalent terhadap perubahan yang terjadi.

d. Masa remaja adalah usia bermasalah

Pada periode ini membawa masalah yang sulit untuk ditangani baik bagi anak laki-laki maupun perempuan. Hal ini disebabkan oleh dua lasan yaitu : pertama, pada saat anak-anak paling tidak sebagian masalah diselesaikan oleh orang tua atau guru, sedangkan sekarang individu dituntut untuk bisa menyelesaikan masalahnya sendiri. Kedua, karena mereka dituntut untuk mandiri maka seringkali menolak untuk dibantu oleh orang tua atau guru, sehingga menimbulkan kegagalan-kegagalan dalam menyelesaikan persoalan tersebut.

e. Masa remaja adalah masa pencarian identitas diri

Pada periode ini, konformitas terhadap kelompok sebaya memiliki peran penting bagi remaja. Mereka mencoba mencari identitas diri dengan berpakaian, berbicara dan berperilaku sebisa mungkin sama dengan kelompoknya. Salah satu cara remaja untuk meyakinkan dirinya yaitu dengan menggunakan simbol status, seperti mobil, pakaian dan benda-benda lainnya yang dapat dilihat oleh orang lain.

f. Masa remaja adalah usia yang ditakutkan

Masa remaja ini seringkali ditakuti oleh individu itu sendiri dan lingkungan. Gambaran-gambaran negatif yang ada dibenak masyarakat mengenai perilaku remaja mempengaruhi cara mereka berinteraksi dengan remaja. Hal ini membuat para remaja itu sendiri merasa takut untuk menjalankan perannya dan enggan meminta bantuan orang tua atau pun guru untuk memecahkan masalahnya.

g. Masa remaja adalah masa yang tidak realistis

Remaja memiliki kecenderungan untuk melihat hidup secara kurang realistis, mereka memandang dirinya dan orang lain sebagaimana mereka inginkan dan bukannya sebagai dia sendiri. Hal ini terutama terlihat pada aspirasinya, aspiriasi yang tidak realitis ini tidak sekedar untuk dirinya sendiri namun bagi keluarga, teman. Semakin tidak realistis aspirasi mereka maka akan semakin marah dan kecewa apabila aspirasi tersebut tidak dapat mereka capai.

h. Masa remaja adalah ambang dari masa dewasa

Pada saat remaja mendekati masa dimana mereka dianggap dewasa secara hukum, mereka merasa cemas dengan stereotype remaja dan menciptakan impresi bahwa mereka mendekati dewasa. Mereka merasa bahwa berpakaian dan berperilaku seperti orang dewasa sringkali tidak cukup, sehingga mereka mulai untuk memperhatikan perilaku atau simbol yang berhubungan dengan status orang dewasa seperti merokok, minum, menggunakan obat-obatan bahkan melakukan hubungan seksual.

III. Tugas Perkembangan Masa Remaja

Menurut Havighurst ( Hurlock, 2004) tugas perkembangan adalah tugas yang muncul pada saat atau sekitar periode tertentu dari kehidupan individu, yang jika berhasil akan menimbulkan rasa bahagia dan membawa ke arah keberhasilan dalam melaksanakan tugas-tugas berikutnya. Akan tetapi jika gagal menimbulkan rasa tidak bahagia dan kesulitan menghadapi tugas-tugas berikutnya. Setiap tahapan rentang kehidupan manusia memiliki tugas perkembangan yang khas, mulai anak-anak hingga dewasa. Tugas perkembangan membantu individu untuk mengetahui apa yang diharapkan masyarakat dari usia-usia tertentu dan memotivasi individu untuk melakukan apa yang diharapkan masyarakat dari individu oleh kelompok sosial pada usia tertentu sepanjang rentang kehidupan. Semua tugas-tugas perkembangan masa remaja terfokus pada bagaimana melalui sikap dan pola perilaku kanak-kanak dan mempersipakan sikap dan perilaku orang dewasa. Rincian tugas-tugas pada masa remaja ini adalah sebagai berikut :

1. Mencapai relasi yang lebih matang dengan teman seusia dari kedua jenis kelamin

2. Mencapai peran sosial feminin atau maskulin

3. Menerima fisik dan menggunakan tubuhnya secara efektif

4. Meminta, menerima dan mencapai perilaku bertanggung jawab secara sosial

5. Mencapai kemandirian secara emosional dari orang tua dan orang dewasa lainnya

6. Mempersiapkan untuk karir ekonomi

7. Memperiapkan untuk menikah dan berkeluarga

8. Memperoleh suatu set nilai dan sistem etis untuk mengarahkan perilaku.

IV. Perubahan-perubahan yang terjadi pada Masa Remaja

a. Perubahan Fisik Masa Remaja

1. Tinggi badan

Rata-rata anak perempuan mencapai tinggi dewasanya pada usia 17/18 tahun dan bagi anak laki-laki satu tahun lebih dari usia tersebut.

2. Berat badan

Perubahan berat tubuh seiring dengan waktu sama dengan perubahan tinggi badan, hanya saja sekarang lebih menyebar ke seluruh tubuh.

3. Proporsi tubuh

Berbagai bagian tubuh secara bertahap mencapai proporsinya. Misal: badan lebih lebar dan lebih kuat.

4. Organ seksual

Pada laki-laki dan perempuan organ seksual mencapai ukuran dewasa pada periode remaja akhir, namun fungsinya belum matang sampai dengan beberapa tahun kemudian

5. Karakteristik sex sekunder

Karakteristik sex sekunder utama mengalami perkembangan pada level dewasa pada periode remaja akhir.

b. Emosionalitas Masa Remaja

Selain terjadi perubahan fisik yang sangat mencolok, juga terjadi perubahan dalam emosionalitas remaja yang cukup mengemuka, sehingga ada beberapa hal yang dapat disimpulkan dari perubahan pada aspek emosionalitas ini.

Masa ini disebut sebagai masa “storm and stres”, dimana terjadi peningkatan ketegangan emosional yang dihasilkan dari perubahan fisik dan hormonal. Pada masa ini emosi seringkali sangat intens, tidak terkontrol dan nampak irrasional, secara umum terdapat peningkatan perilaku emosional pada setiap usia yang dilalui. Misalnya, pada usia 14 tahun, remaja menjadi mudah marah, mudah gembira, dan meledak secara emosional, sedangkan pada usia 16 tahun terjadi kebalikannya mereka mengatakan tidak terlalu merasa khawatir.

Hal yang paling membuat remaja marah adalah apabila mereka diperlakukan seperti anak-anak atau pada saat merasa diperlakukan tidak adil. Ekspresi kemarahannya mungkin berupa mendongkol, menolak untuk bicara, atau mengkritik secara keras. Hal yang juga cukup mengemuka yaittu pada masa ini remaja lebih iri hati terhadap mereka yang memiliki materi lebih.

c. Perubahan Sosial pada Masa Remaja

Salah satu tugas perkembangan yang paling sulit pada masa remaja adalah penyesuaian sosial. Penyesuaian ini harus dilakukan terhadap jenis kelamin yang berlainana dalam suatu relasi yang sebelumnya tidak pernah ada dan terhadap orang dewasa diluar keluarga dan lingkungan sekolah.

Pada masa ini remaja paling banyak menghabiskan waktu mereka di luar rumah bersama dengan teman sebaya mereka, sehingga bisa difahami apabila teman sebaya sangat berpengaruh terhadap sikap, cara bicara, minat, penampilan, dan perilaku remaja.

Perubahan dalam perilaku sosial terlihat dengan adanya perubahan dalam sikap dan perilaku dalam relasi heteroseksual, mereka yang tadinya tidak menyukai keterlibatan lawan jenis menjadi menyukai pertemanan dengan lawan jenis. Secara umum dapat dikatakan bahwa minat terhadap lawan jenis meningkat. Selain itu, perubahan sosial yang terjadi dengan adanya nilai-nilai baru dalam memilih teman, dimana sekarang remaja lebih memilih yang memiliki minat dan nilai-nilai yang sama, bisa memahami dan membuat merasa aman, dapat dipercaya dan bisa diskusi mengenai hal-hal yang tidak bisa dibicarakan dengan guru atau orang tua. Pada masa ini pun remaja memiliki keinginan untuk tampil sebagai seorang yang populer dan disukai oleh lingkungannya.

V. Stres dan Depresi pada Remaja

a. Definisi Stres dan Depresi

Menurut Lazarus & Folkman (dalam Morgan, 1986) stres adalah keadaan internal yang dapat diakibatkan oleh tuntutan fisik dari tubuh (kondisi penyakit, latihan, dll) atau oleh kondisi lingkungan dan sosial yang dinilai potensial membahayakan, tidak terkendali atau melebihi kemampuan individu untuk melakukan coping. Menurut Selye (Bell,1996) stress diawali dengan reaksi waspada (alarm reaction) terhadap adanya ancaman, yang ditandai oleh proses tubuh secara otomatis, seperti: meningkatnya denyut jantung, yang kemudian diikuti dengan reaksi penolakan terhadap stressor dan akan mencapai tahap kehabisan tenaga (exhaustion) jika individu merasa tidak mampu untuk terus bertahan.

Dalam makalah tentang Depresi Remaja yang dipublikasikan oleh Bagian Pediatrik Universitas Diponegoro Semarang, dijelaskan bahwa Kondisi yang ditandai dengan ketidakmampuan berkonsentrasi, perubahan pola tidur yang parah, menurunnya energi, ketidaknyamanan fisik, mudah tersingung, serta perasaan sedih , kesal dan tidak berdaya yang ekstrim. Depresi dapat terjadi pada keadaan normal sebagai bagian dalam perjalanan proses kematangan dari emosi sehingga definisi depresi adalah sebagai berikut: (1) pada keadaan normal merupakan gangguan kemurungan (kesedihan, patah semangat) yang ditandai dengan perasaan tidak pas, menurunnya kegiatan, dan pesimisme menghadapi masa yang akan datang, (2) pada kasus patologis, merupakan ketidakmauan ekstrim untuk mereaksi terhadap rangsang disertai menurunnya nilai diri, delusi ketidakpuasan, tidak mampu, dan putus asa. b. Penyebab/Etiologi Depresi

Beberapa faktor yang diduga berpengaruh terhadap penyebab/etiologi depresi, khususnya pada anak dan remaja adalah:

1. Faktor genetik

Meskipun penyebab depresi secara pasti tidak dapat ditentukan, faktor genetik mempunyai peran terbesar. Gangguan alam perasaan cenderung terdapat dalam suatu keluarga tertentu. Bila suatu keluarga salah satu orangtuanya menderita depresi, maka anaknya berisiko dua kali lipat dan apabila kedua orangtuanya menderita depresi maka risiko untuk mendapat gangguan alam perasaan sebelum usia 18 tahun menjadi empat kali lipat. Pada kembar monozigot, 76% akan mengalami gangguan afektif sedangkan bila kembar dizigot hanya 19%. Bagaimana proses gen diwariskan, belum diketahui secara pasti. Bahwa kembar monozigot tidak 100% menunjukkan gangguan afektif, kemungkinan ada faktor non-genetik yang turut berperan.

2. Faktor Sosial

Dilaporkan bahwa orangtua dengan gangguan afektif cenderung akan selalu menganiaya atau menelantarkan anaknya dan tidak mengetahui bahwa anaknya menderita depresi sehingga tidak berusaha untuk mengobatinya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa status perkawinan orangtua, jumlah sanak saudara, status sosial keluarga, perpisahan orangtua, perceraian, fungsi perkawinan, atau struktur keluarga banyak berperan dalam terjadinya gangguan depresi pada anak. Ibu yang menderita depresi lebih besar pengaruhnya terhadap kemungkinan gangguan psikopatologi anak dibandingkan ayah yang mengalami depresi. Levitan et al (1998) dan Weiss et al (1999) melaporkan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara riwayat penganiayaan fisik atau seksual dengan depresi, tetapi mekanismenya belum diketahui secara pasti.Diyakini bahwa faktor non-genetik seperti fisik maupun lingkungan merupakan pencetus kemungkinan terjadinya depresi pada anak dengan riwayat genetik.

3. Faktor Biologis lainnya

Dua hipotesis yang menonjol mengenai mekanisme gangguan alam perasaan. Hipotesis lain menyatakan bahwa depresi yang terjadi erat hubungannya dengan perubahan keseimbangan adrenergik-asetilkolin yang ditandai dengan meningkatnya kolinergik, sementara dopamin secara fungsional menurun.

c. Kematian dan Perceraian: Sebagai Sumber Depresi Masa Remaja

Menurut Fuhrmann (1990:485) depresi pada masa remaja awal, remaja umumnya cenderung lebih mengarah ke perilaku daripada ke pikiran. Mereka menutupi stress dan depresi yang dialami dengan tingkah laku yang liar dan memberontak. Karenanya depresi pada remaja dapat dilihat dalam kesedihan, ketidakmampuan untuk berkonsentrasi, kondisi tubuh yang sangat lelah, insomnia/gangguan tidur, keluhan fisik, kebosanan, ketidaksabaran, kecemasan, ketegangan, frustrasi, penyalahgunaan alkohol dan obat – obatan, sikap yang tidak terkontrol, memiliki hubungan seksual secara kasual dengan banyak orang, kegagalan, melarikan diri, bahkan memiliki kecenderungan untuk terluka atau terlibat dalam kesulitan.

Fuhrmann (1990:484) menyatakan bahwa 40% - 50% depresi yang muncul pada remaja merupakan suatu respon atau reaksi dari kondisi kehilangan seperti kematian, perceraian, atau perpisahan. Menurut Nurhadi (http://nurhadi-noe.blogspot.com/p/coping-with-loss-gieving.html) loss atau kehilangan adalah situasi aktual/potensial dimana seseorang.obyek yang berharga atau sesuatu yang disukai tidak bisa lagi dilihat sebagai sesuatu yang berharga. Pengalaman kehilangan dapat berupa kehilangan gambaran diri, orang lain yang berarti, kesehatan, pekerjaan, keyakinan dan lain – lain. Dengan kata lain, kehilangan adalah satu situasi di mana seseorang tidak lagi memiliki sesuatu dalam hidupnya.

Dalam pembahasan kita saat ini, anak mengalami kehilangan orang tua, entah ayahnya atau ibunya atau keduanya. Tentunya ‘kehilangan’ orang yang dikasihi merupakan bagian menyedihkan dalam perjalanan hidup seseorang. Kehilangan bisa dialami oleh siapa saja. Bencana alam, penyakit, atau kecelakaan lain dapat merenggut orang yang kita kasihi dari sisi kita. kehilangan di sini umumnya kita mengartikannya dengan kematian. Namun kehilangan juga bisa dalam pengertian psikis, misalnya perceraian orangtua.

Behrman & Arvin (1996:140) menyatakan bahwa pada anak – anak umur sekolah sampai remaja yang telah kehilangan orang tuanya karena kematian, segera sesudah kehilangan, perasaan sedih dan banyak menangis tidak dengan secara jelas nyata ditunjukkan. Anak – anak terus seperti biasa melakukan aktifitas harian. Namun mekanisme utama dari reaksi terhadap kondisi kehilangan ini adalah penolakan, baik secara jelas/sadar maupun tidak sadar, dan didukung oleh keinginan dan harapan gaib untuk bersatu dan kembali munculnya orang tua yang telah meninggal.

Beberapa anak memiliki mekanisme pertahanan yang sangat kuat, yaitu dengan mempertahankan suasana hati yang baik, beberap menjadi lebih aktif daripada biasanya. Wolfenstein dalam Behrman & Arvin (1996:140) melihat suasana hati yang baik sebagai bagian dari penolakan yang efektif. Beberapa anak menunjukkan permusuhan dan marah terhadap orang tua yang masih hidup dan cenderung memihak pada dan mengidealkan orang tua yang telah tiada, kadang – kadang dengan fantasi penyatuan kembali dengan orang tua yang meninggal menyertai penolakan dalam mekanisme pertahanan dirinya ini. Keadaan lain, beberapa anak menunjukkan duka cita yang sangat pada saat orangtua meninggal atau setelah lama meninggal, dimana mekanisme pertahanan dirinya untuk penolakan tidak lagi efektif.

Selanjutnya Behrman & Arvin (1996:140) menjelaskan bahwa pengalaman kehilangan orang tuanya karena perceraian, menimbulkan reaksi seperti menangis karena marah, protes, sangat sedih. Namun ada juga tipe remaja yang bereaksi secara tenang. Sesudah perpisahan beberapa hari atau seterusnya, anak mungkin tampak lebih lemah, menarik diri, dan diam atau rewel, suka murung, melawan dan tidak dapat dikontrol. Gangguan nafsu makan juga dapat terjadi, gangguan tidur. Anak usia sekolah dapat bereaksi dengan depresi yang nyata, agak acuh, sering membantah dan menghindari masalah dengan perilaku atau secara lisan.

VI. Pencegahan

Untuk mencegah depresi dapat dilakukan dengan menggunakan keberadaan dan peran serta guru pembimbing di sekolah. Upaya-upaya pembentukan kelompok belajar, kegiatan ekstrakurikuler, pemilihan jurusan, pramuka dan semacamnya, kesemuanya itu merupakan bagian dari rangkaian upaya preventif. Layanan bimbingan dan konseling dapat berfungsi preventif atau pencegahan. Kegiatan yang berfungsi pencegahan dapat berupa rangkaian layanan orientasi/informasi, konseling pribadi, konseling kelompok, bahkan dalam program bidang pengembangan bimbingan karir. Selain itu kegiatan pendukung lainnya berupa aplikasi instrumentasi, inventarisasi/himpunan data, dan kunjungan rumah.

Pelaksanaan bimbingan dan konseling di sekolah menitik beratkan kepada bimbingan terhadap perkembangan pribadi melalui pendekatan perorangan dan kelompok siswa yang menghadapi masalah untuk mendapatkanbantuan khusus untuk mampu mengatasinya. Tugas guru pembimbing adalah (a) membantu murid untuk mengenal dirinya, kemampuannya dan mengenal orang lain, (b) membantu murid dalam proses yang menuju kematangannya, (c) membantu dan mendorong murid untuk pemilihan-pemilihan yang tepat sesuai dengan kemampuan dan interestnya, (d) memberikan kesadaran kepada murid-murid tentang pentingnya penggunaan waktu luangdan mengembangkan interest dalam hobi yang berguna, (e) membantu murid untuk mengerti metode belajar yang efisien agar dapat mencapai hasilnya dengan waktu yang lebih singkat.

Selain itu, diperlukan pula peranan orang tua (keluarga) dengan menghabiskan waktu bersama sehingga dapat mempererat hubungan antara anggota keluarga, bersikap lebih terbuka dengan cara mendengarkan pendapat anak dan mau dikritik sehingga remaja merasa lebih dihargai.Deteksi dini dengan menggunakan alat skrining (Child Behavior Checklist, Beck Depression Inventories , Child Depression Inventory) saat didapatkannya permasalahan disekolah baik prestasi atau permasalahan perilaku anak akan sangat membantu mengenali lebih dini remaja dengan depresi.

VII. Terapi

Perawatan di rumah sakit perlu dipertimbangkan sesuai dengan indikasi, misalnya penderita cenderung mau bunuh diri, atau adanya penyalahgunaan atau ketergantungan obat. Pada umumnya, penderita berhasil ditangani dengan rawat jalan. Sekali diagnosis depresi berat ditegakkan, psikoterapi dan medikasi merupakan terapi yang harus diberikan. Namun, pengobatan selalu bersifat individual, tergantung pada hasil pertimbangan evaluasi dan keluarganya, termasuk kombinasi terapi individu, terapi keluarga, serta konsultasi dengan pihak sekolah.

Pendekatan biopsikososial digunakan dalam mengobati remaja yang mengalami depresi. Pendekatan ini meliputi psikoterapi (individual, keluarga, kelompok), farmakoterapi, remedial / edukatif, dan pelatihan keterampilan sosial. Sebelum memulai suatu bentuk terapi, sebaiknya dipertimbangkan dengan hati -hati. Adanya obsesi untuk bunuh diri harus diobservasi dengan cermat dan sebaiknya pasien di rawat inap. faktor lain seperti kemampuan untuk berfungsi atau stabilitas keluarga merupakan faktor yang harus dipertimbangkan untuk merawat inapkan remaja ini.

Psikoterapi. Beberapa pendekatan psikoterapi yang dapat dilakukan adalah : psikoterapi perorangan (individual psychotherapy), terapi berorientasi kesadaran (insight-oriented therapy), terapi tingkah laku (behavioral therapy), model stres hidup (life stress model), psikoterapi kognitif (cognitive psychotherapy) ,lain-lain seperti terapi kelompok (group therapy), latihan orangtua (parent training), terapi keluarga (family training), pendidikan remedial (remedial education), dan penempatan di luar rumah (out of homeplacement).
Farmakoterapi . Saat ini, belum ada obat yang direkomendasikan oleh FDA. Pengobatan secara farmakoterapi masih kontroversial pada anak dan remaja . Farmakoterapi yang sering digunakan:

Golongan antidepresi trisiklik: Amitriptilin, Imipramin, dan Desipramin. Berbeda dengan orang dewasa, pada anak tidak menunjukkan perbedaan yang berarti antara antidepresi golongan trisiklik dengan plasebo. Obat ini bersifat kardiotoksik dan cenderung berakibat fatal bila melampaui dosis.

Golongan obat yang bekerja spesifik menghambat ambilan serotinin: fluoksetin dan sertralin. Obat ini memberikan harapan yang cerah dalam pengobatan depresi pada anak dan remaja. Merupakan obat pilihan pertama pada anak dan remaja karena dapat ditoleransi dengan baik dan efek yang merugikan lebih sedikit dibandingkan dengan antidepresi golongan trisiklik. Sayangnya, sedikit sekali penelitian tentang pengobatan rumatan (maintenance) pada anak dan remaja. Dibandingkan dengan usia dewasa, pada masa remaja cenderung berkembang untuk agitasi atau menjadi mania bila mereka mendapat SSRIs (Selective serotinine reuptake inhibitors). Obat ini juga dapat menurunkan libido.

Litium karbonat .Obat ini telah digunakan untuk pengobatan anak dan remaja yang mengalami agresi, mania, depresi, dan masalah tingkah laku, tetapi lebih berguna pada kasus yang berisiko menjadi bipolar.

Beberapa contoh obat yang ada di Indonesia : imipramine 25 – 125 mg / hari, clomipramine 25 – 200 mg /hari, fluoxetine 10 – 80 mg / hari, fluoxamine 100 – 300 mg /hari, sertraline 50 – 200 mg / hari, moclobemide 150 – 300 mg / hari.

VIII. Kasus dan Konseling Krisis Pada Remaja

a. Biodata Konseli

Biodata Konseli:

3. Jenis Kelamin : Perempuan

4. Pendidikan : Pelajar (Kelas XI)

5. Jumlah Saudara : 2 (dua)

6. Masalah : Siswa jarang masuk sekolah akibat adanya masalah dengan orang

tua dan mengalami stress cukup berat akibat perceraian orang tua.

b. Deskripsi Kasus

AK adalah seorang siswa SMA berusia 16 tahun, anak kedua dari dua bersaudara. Orang tua AK bercerai sejak AK di kelas IX (sembilan) SMP. Sejak bercerai AK tinggal bersama ibunya. Sedangkan Ayahnya tinggal di luar negeri bersama kakak perempuannya. AK diminta untuk dikonseling karena berdasarkan abesensi dan laporan wali kelas, siswa jarang masuk sekolah. Menurut informasi yang disampaikan AK, AK jarang masuk sekolah akibat jarak rumah yang jauh dan tidak ada yang mengantar sekolah. Menurut AK, ibunya terlalu sibuk sehingga tidak sempat mengantar sekolah.

Menurut AK, karena tidak ada yang mengantar sekolah, maka biasanya AK ke sekolah dengan mengendarai angkutan umum. Namun ada kalanya ibu lupa meninggalkan uang transport, hal inilah yang menyebabkan AK tidak masuk sekolah. Belakangan AK mengakui bahwa ketidakhadirannya di sekolah juga terkadang disebabkan oleh rasa kecewa dan marah yang besar terhadap kedua orang tuanya yang bercerai, serta ibunya yang sibuk bekerja. Awalnya hal tersebut ia lakukan untuk mendapatkan perhatian ibunya. Namun karena tujuannya tidak tercapai, AK semakin sering tidak masuk sekolah sebagai bentuk “pemberontakan” nya terhadap orang tuanya.

AK merasa kedua orang tuanya, terutama ibunya tidak perduli padanya dan pendidikannya. AK bahkan berpikir bahwa ibunya tidak mencintai dan menginginkannya. Pikiran dan perasaan demikianlah yang mengakibatkan AK berpikir bahwa tidak ada gunanya bersekolah, toh orangtuanya tidak perduli ia berangkat sekolah atau tidak, atau ia berhasil atau tidak. AK mengaku sering sekali bertengkar dengan ibunya dan tidak betah tinggal di rumah. Seringkali AK mengaku ingin melarikan diri dari rumah, karena merasa tinggal dirumah tidak membuatnya senang, tapi sedih dan marah. AK sedih karena rindu dengan ibu, ayah dan kakaknya dapat berkumpul, tapi juga marah kepada ibu dan ayah karena memisahkannya dengan kakaknya.

Kenyataan – kenyataan diatas merupakan pemicu perasaan tertekan AK yang kemudian membentuk stress dan depresi. Disamping itu keadaan pasca perceraian ayah ibunya, AK merasa ibu selalu meninggalkan dan lebih mementingkan pekerjaannya. Akibatnya AK merasa bahwa ia adalah anak yang tidak diinginkan orang tuanya. Perasaan inilah yang semakin menumbuhkan rasa kekecewaan yang mendalam pada ibunya. Rasa kecewa yang mendalam ini akhirnya membuahkan keinginan untuk pergi jauh dari rumah. Bagi AK rumah adalah neraka, sumber kesedihan dan ketidakbahagiaan.

AK sebenarnya termasuk anak yang cerdas. Dalam kondisi keluarga yang demikian, AK masih dapat mempertahankan nilai – nilai mata pelajarannya dia atas rata – rata. Hal ini disebabkan karena AK memiliki keinginan yang kuat untuk melanjutkan sekolah hingga tingkat perguruan tinggi dan mencapai cita – cita masa kecilnya menjadi seorang dokter. Disamping itu, ibunya pernah menjanjikan akan menyekolahkannya ke luar negeri dimana ayah dan kakaknya berada, sehingga ia bisa tinggal bersama – sama mereka lagi.

c. Perspektif Konselor Terhadap Kasus

Untuk menolong remaja yang mengalami stress dan depresi akibat kehilangan seperti perceraian, Dokter Keith Olsen dalam Haksasi (2010:101) menunjukkan beberapa ciri khas mereka yang berhasil melayani remaja depresi, yaitu:

1. Mempunyai kecakapan mengembangkan hubungan yang hangat dan penuh empati.

2. Dapat dipercaya dan konsisten dalam tanggapan mereka.

3. Mengendalikan diri dan tata cara konseling dengan menggunakan secara tepat kewibawaan tanpa merendahkan martabat konseli.

4. Tidak peduli jika mereka tidak dipercaya.

5. Dapat mengembangkan hubungan yang menyenangkan dengan si konseli.

6. Sangat mendorong konseli untuk mandiri.

7. Tahan menghadapi kemarahan dan permusuhan dari konseli.

8. Merupakan konselor yang penampilan, kepribadian, gaya konseling dan keseluruhan penyajian mereka diterima baik oleh remaja.

Bertolak dari hal – hal di atas, maka konselor yang menangani remaja yang mengalami stress dan depresi akibat kehilangan orang tua, baik akibat kematian atau perceraian, memegang peran penting untuk memberikan terapi edukatif. Yang dimaksud dengan terapi edukatif adala memberikan bimbingan dan menunjukkan perilaku menyimpang remaja dan berupaya bekerjasama dengan orang tua dan pihak terkait (psikolog atau psikiater) untuk menyelesaikan masalah tersebut.

Konseli pernah mengalami peristiwa dimana ketika ia berumur 7 tahun, ia ditinggal orang tuanya selama tiga bulan bersama pembantu. Dimasa SMA, beberapa kali ibu konseli lupa meninggalkan uang transportasi untuk konseli, sehingga konseli tidak dapat berangkat sekolah. Beberapa peristiwa yang pernah dialami konseli ini merupakan peristiwa yang diikuti oleh perasaan tidak enak, yang sekaligus ikut mempengaruhi pikiran AK. Seperti yang di kemukakan Prayitno (2005:79) bahwa “Pikiran seseorang dapat menjadi perasaannya, dan sebaliknya.” Oleh karenanya pada saat AK melakukan penilaian negatif terhadap perceraian orang tua dan kesibukan ibunya, pada saat bersamaan timbul juga pikiran negatif tentang hal itu. Perasaan negatifnya: Ia merasa tidak dicintai, tidak diperdulikan, dan ditolak. Pikiran negatifnya: Buat apa bersekolah, toh ibunya tidak perduli, ia berangkat sekolah atau tidak, dan apakah dia akan berhasil atau tidak.

Kemarahan yang sangat besar dan kesedihan mendalam terhadap perceraian orang tua dan ibu yang terlalu sibuk dengan pekerjaan, menimbulkan rasa kehilangan yang mendalam juga. Inilah yang menjadi sumber stress dan depresi AK. Baginya rumah adalah sumber kesedihan dan penderitaannya. Ia bahkan berpikir rumah adalah neraka. Akibatnya muncul keinginan untuk melarikan diri, meninggalkan ibu dan rumahnya.

Disinilah tugas konselor memberi terapi edukatif, dimana konselor membimbing dan menunjukkan pada konseli bahwa perilaku “pemberontakan’ yang dilakukannya karena tidak masuk sekolah selama ini tidak benar. Konselor dengan sabar perlu membimbing konseli dengan menunjukkan hal – hal realistis yang dapat dilakukan konseli mengatasi kekecewaannya yang mendalam dan rasa tertekan yang selama ini ia rasakan akibat perceraian orang tuanya.

Dalam kasus yang dialami AK, konselor mengarahkan konseli untuk memiliki padangan hidup yang lebih realistis, yaitu dengan mengajak konseli berpikir secara rasional untuk mengubah sikap dan tingkah laku yang muncul akibat gagasan – gagasan AK yang berpikir bahwa kesibukan ibunya adalah tanda penolakan terhadap dirinya. Demikian juga perceraian kedua orang tuanya merupakan peristiwa yang sangat mengecewakan AK, sehingga ia menganggap kedua orang tuanya tidak mencintai dan tidak perduli padanya.

Goliszek (2005) dalam Haksasi (2010:102) menyarankan konselor yang menangani remaja yang mengalami stres dan depresi, agar membekali remaja dengan kemampuan management stress. Menurutnya konselor dapat menerapkan langkah – langkah berikut:

1. Ungkapkan kembali komentar anak untuk menunjukkan anda memahaminya dan meyakinkan anak bahwa anda mendengarkannya.

2. Perhatikan wajah dan bahasa tubuhnya; kadang antara apa yang diutarakan dengan ekspres wajah dan tubuh berbeda.

3. Memberikan dukungan nonverbal dan semangat.

4. Gunakan kalimat yang memberi semangat untuk menunjukkan minat konselor sehingga percakapan tetap berjalan, misalnya dengan kalimat sederhana.

5. Berikan banyak pujian; carilah prestasinya dan berikan apresiasi terhadap apa yang telah dilakukannya, sehingga mereka memiliki perasaan positif tentang dirinya.

6. Pujilah usahanya bukan hanya prestasi; upaya yang dilakukannya dalam menyelesaikan masalah kendati belum memperoleh hasil.

7. Bantulah anak untuk menentukan sasaran yang realistis; disini konselor dapat membantu anak menyesuaikan antara harapan dan kemampuan yang dimiliki agar tidak mengalami kegagalan kembali.

8. Jangan membandingkan usaha anak dengan anak lainnya, karena hal ini akan membuat anak berkecil hati untuk melepaskan diri dari masalahnya.

9. Pada saat mengoreksi, kritiklah dengan tindakannya bukan pribadi anak; konselor harus memperhatikan ungkapan – ungkapannya jangan sampai terkesan menghakimi anak karena kesalahan yang dilakukan.

10. Berilah tanggung jawab yang nyata pada anak, misalnya dengan melakukan tugas – tugas di rumah yang akan merangsang anak memiliki tanggungjawab yang lebih baik.

11. Tunjukkan pada anak bahwa anda mencintai dan memperhatikan dirinya sehingga ia semakin bersemangat untuk merubah diri dan menerima saran konselor demi kebaikan anak itu sendiri.

IX. Kesimpulan

Masa remaja sebagai periode perkembangan yang paling penting bagi individu pada kenyataannya merupakan suatu periode yang sarat dengan perubahan dan rentan munculnya masalah. Meskipun demikian adanya pemahaman yang baik serta penanganan yang tepat terhadap remaja merupakan faktor penting bagi keberhasilan remaja di kehidupan selanjutnya, mengingat masa ini merupakan masa yang paling menentukan. Selain itu perlu adanya kerjasama dari remaja itu sendiri, orang tua, guru dan pihak-pihak lain yang terkait agar perkembangan remaja di bidang pendidikan dan bidang-bidang lainnya dapat dilalui secara terarah, sehat dan bahagia.

PETUNJUK :

Lembar ini merupakan alat untuk mengungkapkan masalah-masalah siswa pada umumnya. Para siswa diharapkan menjawab apa yang dikemukakan di dalam buku ini dengan sungguh-sungguh dan jujur. Jawaban siswa tidak akan dinilai benar atau salah, melainkan merupakan gambaran tentang keadaan diri siswa sendiri. Semua jawaban siswa dirahasiakan dan hanya akan digunakan untuk membantu siswa.

Bacalah daftar berikut ini dengan teliti dan tandailah masalah-masalah yang menjadi keluhan dan mengganggu anda. Ikutilah tiga langkah berikut ini :

Langkah pertama

Langkah kedua

PENTINGNYA KONSELING KARIR DI SEKOLAH

A. Latar Belakang

Dalam era pembangunan dan perkembangan teknologi mutakhir masa kini, kebutuhan akan sumber daya manusia yang memiliki keterampilan dan kompetensi yang unggul, sebagai pemikir, perencana, penggerak, dan pendukung pembangunan semakin tinggi. Bertolak dari hal tersebut, maka telah menjadi tujuan pendidikan nasional, untuk mengembangkan manusia Indonesia terutama generasi muda, agar mampu mempersiapkan diri untuk kelak berpartisipasi dalam usaha – usaha pembangunan Indonesia. Hal ini seperti yang dirumuskan dalam UU No. 2 tahun 1989 tentang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional bahwa “tujuan pendidikan adalah terwujudnya manusia Indonesia seutuhnya yang cerdas, yang beriman dan taqwa kepada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa dan berbudi pekerti luhur, memiliki pengetahuan dan keterampilan, kesehatan jasmani dan rohani, kepribadian yang mantap dan mandiri, serta rasa tanggung jawab kemasyarakatan dan kebangsaan.”

Bimbingan dan konseling di sekolah merupakan bagian integral dari sistem pendidikan nasional. Dengan kata lain pelayanan bimbingan dan konseling pada dasarnya membantu dan menyokong tercapainya tujuan pendidikan nasional, yaitu mewujudkan individu yang utuh, yang mampu memanfaatkan potensi yang dimiliki secara optimal untuk mengatasi permasalahan yang dihadapi. Dengan demikian tercipta manusia Indonesia yang memiliki ketaqwaan terhadap Tuhan YME, pengetahuan yang luas dan perkembangan kepribadian yang optimal. Hal ini sebagaimana yang dijelaskan oleh Hamrin & Clifford, dalam Jones (1951) bahwa “tujuan bimbingan dan konseling adalah membantu individu membuat pilihan – pilihan, penyesuaian – penyesuaian, dan interpretasi – interpretasi dalam hubungannya dengan situasi – situasi tertentu.” (Prayitno & Amti, 2004:112).

Salah satu bidang pelayanan bimbingan dan konseling yang berupaya mewujudkan tujuan pendidikan nasional adalah bidang pengembangan karir, atau disebut juga bimbingan karir. Ahmadi (1977) dalam Salahuddin (2010:116) merumuskan bimbingan karir atau jabatan sebagai “usaha bimbingan kepada peserta didik dalam usaha pertimbangan untuk bekerja atau tidak, dan jika perlu bekerja.... memiliki lapangan kerja yang cocok dengan ciri – ciri pribadi, menentukan lapangan pekerjaan dan memasukinya serta mengadakan penyesuaian kerja secara baik.” Berdasarkan rumusan ini, dapat dikatakan bahwa bimbingan karir merupakan suatu proses bantuan yang diberikan pada individu melalui berbagai cara dan bentuk layanan agar ia mampu merencanakann karirnya dengan mantap, sesuai dengan bakat, minat, dan kemampuan, pengetahuan dan kepribadian, serta faktor – faktor yang mendukung kemajuan dirinya. Faktor – faktor yang mendukung perkembangan diri individu ini antara lain adalah status sosial dan ekonomi keluarga, layanan informasi dan konseling karir.

Layanan informasi karir pada dasarnya merupakan layanan yang memberikan data atau fakta kepada siswa tentang dunia pekerjaan/jabatan/karir. Informasi karir ini menurut Winkel & Hastuti (2010:319) mencakup “semua data mengenai jenis – jenis pekerjaan yang ada di masyarakat (field of occupation), mengenai gradasi posisi dalam lingkup suatu jabatan (level of occupation), mengenai persyaratan tahap dan jenis pendidikan, mengenai sistem klasifikasi jabatan, dan mengenai prospek masa depan berkaitan dengan kebutuhan riil masyarakat akan jenis/corak pekerjaan tertentu.” Sedangkan Sears dalam Suherman (2009) mendefinisikan konseling karir sebagai suatu hubungan one to one atau kelompok kecil antara seorang konseli dan seorang konselor dengan tujuan membantu konseli mengintegrasikan dan menerapkan pemahaman diri dan lingkungan untuk membuat keputusan – keputusan dan penyesuaian – penyesuaian karir yang lebih tepat.

Sebagian besar orang menganggap bekerja dan memiliki karir adalah hal yang penting dan merupakan kebutuhan yang harus dilakukan. Karena tanpa bekerja kita tidak dapat memenuhi kebutuhan – kebutuhan hidup kita. Bagi sebagian orang yang lain, bekerja dan berkarir tidak hanya bermakna agar ia dapat mempertahankan hidupnya secara fisik, namun juga merupakan suatu aktifitas yang membawa dampak positif bagi masyarakat dan bangsa. Lebih jauh lagi, bekerja dan berkarir memberi kepuasan pribadi dan makna bagi dirinya sebagai suatu identitas. Hal ini seperti dikemukakan Fuhrmann (1990:426) bahwa “kita [Orang Amerika] adalah bangsa para pekerja yang memperkenalkan diri kita pada orang lain sesuai dengan pekerjaan yang kita lakukan. Ketika orang bertanya “Siapa anda?” hampir semua orang menjawab dengan jenis pekerjaan yang dilakukannya, “Saya adalah seorang guru”, “Saya adalah seorang pengacara, “Saya adalah seorang dokter”.”

Banyaknya jumlah pekerjaan dengan variasi jenis dan tahap keahlian, yang menuntut penguasaan pengetahuan, kemampuan – kecakapan, keterampilan dan sikap – sikap tertentu yang juga terus berkembang atau berubah dengan cepat, sering kali menimbulkan kebingungan dan masalah pada remaja. Kebingungan dan kesulitan remaja dalam memahami, merencanakan dan mempersiapkan diri memasuki dunia kerja, juga dipersulit oleh kenyataan yang dihadapi saat ini, yaitu kelangkaan lapangan kerja. Krisis moneter negara kita yang terjadi beberapa tahun lalu, menyebabkan banyak perusahaan menengah dan besar mengalami kebangkrutan. Sejumlah karyawan dan buruh mengalami pemutusan hubungan kerja atau PHK.

Disamping itu, kondisi dalam negeri yang seringkali mengalami goncangan sosial dan politik, mengakibatkan hingga kini perkembangan ekonomi Indonesia masih berjalan lambat. Birokrasi yang masih berbelit turut mengakibatkan para investor asing sangat berhati – hati untuk menanamkan modalnya di Indonesia, akibatnya kondisi sosial ekonomi masyarakat Indonesia masih tetap rendah. Bahkan awal tahun 2011 dilaporkan oleh wartawan VIVAnews, bahwa ditahun 2010 masih terdapat 31,02 juta jiwa penduduk Indonesia yang masih hidup di bawah garis kemiskinan. Kondisi demikian, tentu saja turut menambah rumitnya masalah dan kebingungan yang dihadapi berbagai pihak termasuk remaja, dalam menghadapi dan merencanakan masa depannya.

Berkenaan dengan masalah pekerjaan atau bekerja ini, hal yang sering menjadi perhatian adalah padangan masyarakat tentang pekerjaan atau bekerja itu sendiri. Sukmadinata (2007:89) menyatakan bahwa “Selama ini ada pandangan bahwa yang dimaksud dengan bekerja itu adalah bekerja pada pemerintah, pada lembaga atau perusahaan negara atau swasta, atau bekerja pada orang lain dan mendapatkan gaji atau upah. Bekerja sendiri, memproduksi sesuatu barang, memberikan jasa atau pelayanan, berdagang, dll., sering dipandang sebagai bukan bekerja.” Pandangan masyarakat ini sangat besar pengaruhnya terhadap pandangan anak dan remaja khususnya, karena remaja di Indonesia cenderung mengikuti pandangan orang tua mereka dan masyarakat pada umumnya.

Untuk menghadapi dan mengatasi masalah dan kebingungan tersebut, remaja perlu mendapat bantuan dari orang tua, sekolah dan lembaga – lembaga terkait. Melalui bimbingan dan konseling karir di sekolah, peserta didik dapat memperoleh layanan informasi karir yang lebih terencana, sistematis, dan terfokus. Dengan demikian peserta didik dapat dipersiapkan dan dibantu untuk merencanakan hari depannya dan lebih termotivasi dalam belajar demi mencapai cita – citanya. Hal ini seperti dijelaskan oleh Winkel & Hastuti (2010:621) bahwa “ragam bimbingan karir berkaitan erat dengan komponen bimbingan penempatan (placement), yang mencakup semua usaha membantu peserta didik merencanakan masa depannya selama masih di sekolah dan setelah tamat, memilih program studi lanjutan sebagai persiapan kelak memegang jabatan tertentu.”

Lebih lanjut Sukardi & Kusmawati (2008:14) merumuskan pokok – pokok rincian bidang bimbingan karir yang salah satunya adalah “orientasi dan informasi terhadap pendidikan yang lebih tinggi khususnya sesuai dengan karir yang hendak dikembangkan.” Dengan kata lain, bimbingan karir dan konseling karir di sekolah adalah upaya pemberian informasi yang berhubungan dengan sekolah lanjutan. Misalnya ditingkat SD diberikan informasi tentang jenis – jenis pekerjaan pada umumnya yang dikenal di masyarakat, seperti dokter, guru, polisi, dll. Di tingkat SMP, dijelaskan tentang apa itu SMA, SMK, MTs, dan MA; jurusan apa yang dapat diambil pada pendidikan lanjutan kelak sesuai dengan minat, bakat, dan kemampuan siswa, dan sebagainya. Ditingkat SMA dijelaskan tentang jurusan IPA, IPS, dan Bahasa. Perbedaan universitas, sekolah tinggi, dan institut. Serta persiapan masuk perguruan tinggi. Ditingkat Perguruan Tinggi, dijelaskan mengenai kesiapan seseorang dalam bekerja. Memberi motivasi bagaimana agar senang atau menyukai pekerjaan yang dipilihnya.

Layanan konseling karir penting diberikan bagi remaja, sebagai salah satu sarana meningkatkan kesejahteraan remaja. Dengan demikian remaja memiliki peluang untuk mencapai masa depan yang menjanjikan. Santrock (2007:15) mengingatkan bahwa “masa depan anak muda merupakan masa depan masyarakat kita. Remaja yang belum mengembangkan potensinya secara utuh, yang hanya memberikan kontribusi yang kecil, yang tidak berperan sebagai orang dewasa yang produktif, akan merugikan masa depan masyarakat kita.” Karenanya, layanan konseling karir dalam program bimbingan karir di sekolah, penting diberikan bagi remaja. Dengan begitu remaja memiliki gambaran apa yang ingin dan dapat dilakukan setelah lulus sekolah, yang membawa manfaat bagi kehidupan pribadi dan masyarakat secara luas. Disamping itu, melalui informasi dan konseling karir, remaja lebih siap kelak ketika memasuki dunia orang dewasa dengan berbagai resiko dan tanggung jawab yang diembannya.

Layanan konseling karir merupakan bagian dari bidang pengembangan karir atau bidang bimbingan karir dalam program bimbingan dan konseling di sekolah. Konseling karir diharapkan dapat memberikan tidak hanya informasi karir, namun juga bantuan untuk mengatasi masalah dan kebingungan remaja, dalam

Melalui informasi yang diperoleh dalam konseling karir di sekolah, siswa dibantu untuk memilih dan menentukan apa yang ingin dilakukan setelah menyelesaikan pendidikannya di sekolah. Apakah ia ingin meneruskan ke jenjang pendidikan selanjutnya, atau memilih untuk bekerja. Dengan kata lain, melalui informasi yang diperoleh dalam konseling karir, remaja dapat mempersiapkan dan atau merencanakan karir dan masa depannya. Apabila remaja memiliki motivasi studi lanjut yang tinggi, akan terbuka peluang baginya untuk memperoleh kesejahateraan di masa depan, begitu juga sebaliknya.

Generasi muda yang sejahtera dan produktif tentunya turut menyejahterahkan kehidupan dan pertumbuhan bangsa dan negara. Hal inilah yang secara tidak langsung tersirat dalam tujuan pendidikan nasional dalam UU No. 2 tahun 1989 tentang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional, yaitu terwujudnya manusia Indonesia seutuhnya yang cerdas, yang beriman dan taqwa kepada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa dan berbudi pekerti luhur, memiliki pengetahuan dan keterampilan, kesehatan jasmani dan rohani, kepribadian yang mantap dan mandiri, serta rasa tanggung jawab kemasyarakatan dan kebangsaan.

B. Bimbingan Karir Di Sekolah

1. Pokok – Pokok Pelayanan Bimbingan Karir di Sekolah

Menurut Sukardi & Kusmawati (2008:14) dalam bidang bimbingan karir, pelayanan bimbingan dan konseling di SMP, SMA/SMK membantu siswa merencanakan dan mengembangkan masa depan karir. Bidang ini dapat dirinci menjadi pokok – pokok sebagai berikut:

a. Pemantapan pemahaman diri berkenaan dengan kecenderungan karir yang hendak dikembangkan.

b. Pemantapan orientasi dan informasi karir pada umumnya, khususnya karir yang hendak dikembangkan.

c. Orientasi dan informasi terhadap dunia kerja dan usaha memperoleh penghasilan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidup.

d. Orientasi dan informasi terhadap pendidikan yang lebih tinggi, khususnya sesuai dengan karir yang hendak dikembangkan.

2. Syarat – Syarat Dilaksanakan Program Bimbingan Karir Di Sekolah

Bimbingan karir dimasukkan ke dalam kerangka umum pendidikan karir, dimana pendidikan karir akan berfungsi dalam perkembangan karir. Untuk itu menurut Winkel & Hastuti (2010:673) program bimbingan karir di sekolah harus memenuhi syarat – syarat sebagai berikut:

a. Terpusat pada siswa, yang mengandung tuntutan memberikan serangkaian pengalaman yang dibutuhkan oleh para siswa, yang mengandung tuntutan memberikan serangkaian pengalaman yang dibutuhkan oleh para siswa untuk meningkatkan perkembangan karir mereka.

b. Berorientasi pada lingkungan sosial, ekonomi, dan budaya yang mengelilingi para siswa, dengan mengindahkan bahwa lingkungan itu akan mengalami berbagai perubahan yang mempunyai dampak terhadap perkembangan karir orang muda.

c. Terarah ke arah perkembangan seperangkat kemampuan peserta didik yang mereka butuhkan untuk dapat merencanakan masa depannya dan mengimplementasikan rencana itu dalam rentetan tindakan nyata.

3. Cakupan Materi Bimbingan Karir

Program bimbingan karir disusun berdasarkan struktur program bimbingan dan konseling serta perkembangan karir. Adapun materi bimbingan karir menurut Salahudin (2010:119) mencakup:

a. Informasi tentang dunia kerja, hubungan industrial, dan layanan perkembangan belajar.

b. Substansi informasi dunia kerja, meliputi antara lain lapangan kerja, jenis dan persyaratan jabatan, prospek dunia kerja, budaya kerja.

c. Substansi hubungan industrial, meliputi hubungan kerja, sarana hubungan industrial, dan masalah khusus ketenagakerjaan.

d. Substansi layanan perkembangan belajar, meliputi antara lain kesulitan belajar, minat, dan bakat, masalah sosial, dan masalah pribadi.

4. Tujuan Bimbingan dan Konseling Karir Di Sekolah

Menurut Salahudin (2010:116) secara umum, tujuan bimbingan dan konseling karir di sekolah adalah sebagai berikut:

a. Memiliki pemahaman diri (kemampuan, minat, dan kepribadian) yang terkait dengan pekerjaan.

b. Memiliki pengetahuan mengenai dunia kerja dan informasi karir yang menunjang kematangan kompetensi kerja.

c. Memahami relevansi kompetensi belajar (kemampuan menguasai pelajaran) dengan persyaratan keahlian atau keterampilan bidang pekerjaan yang menjadi cita – cita karirnya di masa depan.

d. Memiliki kemampuan untuk membentuk identitas karir, dengan cara mengenali ciri – ciri pekerjaan, kemampuan (persyaratan) yang dituntut, lingkungan sosiopsikologis pekerjaan, prospek kerja, dan kesejahteraan kerja.

e. Memiliki kemampuan merencanakan masa depan, yaitu merancang kehidupan secara rasional untuk memperoleh peran – peran yang sesuai dengan minat, kemampuan, dan kondisi kehidupan sosial ekonomi.

f. Mengenal keterampilan, minat dan bakat. Keberhasilan atau kenyamanan dalam suatu karir amat dipengaruhi oleh minat dan bakat yang dimiliki. Oleh karena itu, setiap orang harus memahami kemampuan dan minatnya, dalam bidang pekerjaan apa dia mampu, dan apakah dia berniat terhadap pekerjaan tersebut.

g. Memiliki kemampuan atau kematangan untuk mengambil keputusan karir.

h. Memiliki kemampuan untuk menciptakan suasana hubungan industrial yang harmonis, dinamis, berkeadilan, dan bermartabat.

5. Bimbingan Karir Sebagai Bagian Dari Pendidikan Karir

Walaupun secara formal pendidikan karir belum dikenal dalam dunia pendidikan sekolah di Indonesia, namun masyarakat Indonesia mengenal apa yang disebut bimbingan karir, dimana bimbingan karir merupakan bagian dari pendidikan karir. Hal ini seperti yang dijelaskan oleh Winkel & Hastuti (2010:673) bahwa:

Menurut konsepsi pendidikan karir, bimbingan karir merupakan bagian integral dari keseluruhan program pendidikan karir. Seluruh kegiatan bimbingan karir melengkapi usaha – usaha pendidikan karir yang lain.... Dengan demikian bimbingan karir atau bimbingan jabatan merupakan salah satu wujud upaya pendidikan karir atau pendidikan jabatan, dan harus sama – sama berorientasi pada pendampingan proses perkembangan karir manusia muda.

C. Pendidikan Karir Di Sekolah

Tujuan remaja bersekolah adalah mencapai sesuatu yang bersangkutan dengan masa depan, yaitu pekerjaan atau karir. Dengan kata lain, pendidikan sekolah akhirnya akan bermuara pada suatu karir atau jabatan yang bermakna bagi dirinya sendiri dan bagi masyarakat. Pencapaian tujuan ini tidaklah lepas dari usaha – usaha berbagai pihak untuk mempersiapkan dan mendampingi remaja dalam proses pemilihan dan pengambilan keputusan karir. Usaha – usaha untuk mempersiapkan remaja dalam pengambilan keputusan karir antara lain berupa pemberian informasi sehubungan dengan pengetahuan, keterampilan, sikap serta nilai, yang semuanya diperlukan dalam menekuni karirnya. Hal ini diwujudkan dalam apa yang disebut pendidikan karir (career education).

Hoyt (1975) dalam Fuhrmann (1990:458) mendefinisikan pendidikan karir sebagai “kombinasi dari berbagai aktifitas dan pengalaman dimana melalui berbagai aktifitas dan pengalaman tersebut individu – individu memperpersiapkan diri mereka untuk bekerja (baik yang dibayar maupun tidak) selama hidup mereka.” Pendidikan karir menurut Beane (1979 dalam Fuhrmann 1990:459) “menolong orang dalam mengembangkan keterampilan – keterampilan hidup (life skills), nilai dan minat pribadi, penghargaan terhadap kerja dan komitmen pada masyarakat dan kemawasan diri.” Selanjutnya Herr (1979) menegaskan bahwa “terutama di era teknologi tinggi masa kini, secara pribadi setiap orang harus menyadari kelebihan, kelemahan, dan apa yang mereka sukai; mereka memerlukan berbagai keterampilan untuk menggunakan berbagai sumber dan material, keterampilan untuk mempertimbangkan berbagai alternatif, untuk membuat keputusan, dan memahami hubungan antara pendidikan dan pekerjaan.” (Fuhrmann, 1990:459). Pendidikan karir harus mencakup semua hal tersebut dan juga mengembangkan keterampilan – keterampilan khusus.

Tujuan Pendidikan Karir Di Sekolah

Reinhart (1979) dalam Winkel & Hastuti (2010:670) mendeskripsikan pendidikan karir sebagai usaha dalam lingkungan pendidikan sekolah dan masyarakat luas untuk membantu semua individu selama seluruh kehidupannya untuk mencapai tujuan – tujuan sebagai berikut:

a. Mengenal berbagai jenis jabatan yang terbuka baginya dan sekaligus bermakna serta memuaskan, menghayati semua nilai yang diamali oleh masyarakat yang berorientasi pada kerja.

b. Menjadi mampu untuk mengambil keputusan rasional sehubungan dengan tujuan – tujuan yang ingin diperjuangkan dalam bidang kegiatan/aktivitas vokasional.

c. Melaksanakan keputusan tadi secara nyata dalam bentuk mengintegrasikan semua nilai yang terkandung dalam bekerja (vocational value) serta semua sikap yang dituntut dalam bekerja (vocational attitude) dalam seluruh gaya hidupnya.

Berdasarkan deskripsi pendidikan karir di atas, Winkel & Hastuti (2010:670) merumuskan bahwa program – program pendidikan karir di berbagai jenjang pendidikan sekolah bertujuan:

a. Mendampingi orang muda mengeksplorasi beraneka kelompok jabatan (occupational clusters).

b. Memahami berbagai tuntutan yang harus dipenuhi dan keseluruhan pergeseran yang berlangsung di pasar kerja.

c. Memperoleh kemahiran – kemahiran intelektual, pengetahuan, sikap – sikap, dan keterampilan umum serta khusus yang diperlukan untuk mulai bergerak di pasar kerja, dan mengadakan perencanaan bagi pembangunan masa depannya sendiri (career planning).

Manfaat Pendidikan Karir Di Sekolah

Sebagai hasil dari proses pendidikan karir di sekolah ini, lebih lanjut Winkel & Hastuti (2010:671) merumuskan bahwa peserta didik pada masing – masing jenjang pendidikan sekolah diharapkan akan:

a. Memiliki bekal akademik, sehingga dapat menyesuaikan diri dengan fluktuasi perubahan dalam masyarakat.

b. Mempunyai tata cara bekerja yang baik dan tepat dalam melakukan apa saja (good work habits).

c. Berpegang pada nilai – nilai yang mendorong mereka mau bekerja keras.

d. Menguasai cara yang tepat untuk mengambil keputusan tentang jabatan dan melamar pekerjaan di pasar kerja.

e. Memiliki keterampilan umum serta yang memungkinkan untuk mengikuti program latihan lebih luas dan mendalam dalam lingkungan jabatannya kelak (trainable).

f. Dan sudah mengambil keputusan, berdasarkan pertimbangan matang terhadap data dan fakta tentang diri sendiri serta penawaran kesempatan memperoleh pendidikan tambahan, sebelum akan memasuki lingkungan suatu jabatan.

Dengan demikian program pendidikan karir di institusi pendidikan diharapkan bermanfaat bagi anak remaja yang putus sekolah, bagi remaja yang akan melanjutkan ke jenjang pendidikan selanjutnya, baik ke sekolah lanjutan atas maupun ke perguruan tinggi, bagi siswa yang tamat pendidikan menengah dan akan langsung bekerja, bagi mahasiswa untuk memantapkan diri dalam perkembangan karirnya selama belajar di perguruan tinggi, dan bahkan bagi siapapun juga yang pernah mengikuti program pendidikan karir di sekolahnya dahulu, seandainya pada masa tengah umur terpaksa memulai karir yang kedua (second career).

KRISIS

A. Pengertian Krisis

Dalam kamus psikologi C.P. Chaplin (1993:117), krisis di definisikan sebagai “titik balik ditandai oleh
kemajuan atau kemunduran yang tajam.” Selanjutnya Chaplin (ibid:118) menyebutkan juga bahwa krisis adalah “satu keputusan yang besar dan sangat penting bagi seseorang.” Sedangkan pengertian krisis dalam Kamus besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI, 1997) adalah “keadaan yang berbahaya, keadaan genting, kemelut, dengan suram dalam berbagai hal seperti ekonomi dan moral.”

Business Dictionary mendefinisikan krisis adalah “kejadian atau peristiwa penting dan genting atau titik pengambilan keputusan, dimana jika tidak diatasi dengan cara dan waktu yang tepat (atau bahkan tidak diatasi sama sekali), maka akan mengakibatkan bencana dan tragedi.” Webster mendefinisikan krisis sebagai suatu masa yang gawat/kritis sekali dan suatu titik balik dalam sesuatu. Istilah ini sering dipakai untuk menunjukkan suatu reaksi dalam diri seseorang terhadap suatu bahaya dari luar. Krisis dapat membawa kesempatan dan juga bahaya. Kesempatan untuk bertumbuh menjadi lebih baik jika ditangani dengan benar dan bahaya jika penangannya tidak benar. Menurut Wikipedia, krisis adalah situasi dari suatu sistem yang kompleks (keluarga, ekonomi, masyarakat) yang tidak berfungsi dengan baik, sehingga penting mengambil keputusan segera, namun penyebab disfungsi ini tidak diketahui.

B. Unsur - Unsur Krisis

Unsur-unsur yang umum dalam sebuah krisis, menuru Norman Wright (1993) dalam Haksasi (2010:9-10) adalah:

1. Kejadian yang penuh resiko

Ini adalah kejadian yang mengawali suatu reaksi berantai dari kejadian- kejadian yang mencapai puncaknya dalam suatu krisis. Seorang istri yang masih muda yang bersiap-siap menghadapi kariernya selama tujuh tahun sekarang menemukan dirinya hamil. Seorang mahasiswa tahun terakhir yang menyerahkan dirinya untuk bermain sepak bola selama waktu kuliahnya agar dipilih sebagai pemain profesional, mengalami kecelakaan sehingga pergelangan kakinya hancur. Seorang duda yang memelihara lima orang anak pra remaja kehilangan pekerjaannya dalam suatu profesi yang sangat khusus. Semua orang yang disebut di atas mempunyai banyak persamaan. Adalah penting bagi orang-orang yang berada dalam krisis dan bagi para penolong untuk mengenal peristiwa- peristiwa yang menimbulkan krisis itu.

2. Keadaan rentan

Tidak semua peristiwa ini membawa seseorang kepada suatu krisis. Kalau orang tidak rentan, pasti krisis itu tidak mungkin terjadi. Tidak tidur dua malam saja bisa membuat seorang menjadi rentan terhadap suatu situasi yang biasanya dapat ia tanggulangi tanpa kesulitan. Keadaan sakit dan tertekan menyebabkan mekanisme untuk mengatasi masalah makin menurun. Baru-baru ini saya berbicara dengan seorang wanita yang ingin melepaskan anak angkatnya, membatalkan suatu peristiwa pengumpulan dana yang penting dan meninggalkan usahanya. Ia sedih karena ada ancaman suatu kehilangan lain dalam hidupnya. Saya mengatakan kepadanya untuk tidak membuat keputusan selama ia mengalami depresi, karena keputusan-keputusan itu sering disesalkan kemudian.

3. Faktor pencetus yang menimbulkan krisis

Cara lain untuk mengatakan hal ini ialah bahwa ini adalah faktor terakhir yang ditambahkan pada faktor-faktor lain. Sebagian orang kelihatannya dapat menguasai diri pada saat dilanda kehilangan yang cukup berat atau kehancuran hati, tetapi kemudian mereka ambruk karena suatu persoalan kecil saja. Ini merupakan persoalan yang terakhir, tetapi reaksi dan air mata saat itu merupakan tanggapan terhadap kehilangan yang cukup berat sebelum itu.

4. Keadaan krisis yang aktif. Ketika seseorang tidak dapat lagi mengatasi situasi, maka krisis yang aktif dapat berkembang. Hal ini ditandai dengan adanya gejala-gejala stress, sikap panik atau gagal, fokusnya adalah untuk pembebasan dan efisiensi yang menurun. Ada beberapa petunjuk tentang keadaan ini.

1) Ada gejala-gejala stres -- secara psikologis, fisiologis, atau kedua-duanya. Ini dapat termasuk depresi, sakit kepala, kegelisahan, luka lambung. Selalu ada suatu jenis kegelisahan yang ekstrem.

2) Ada sikap panik atau gagal. Orang itu mungkin merasa bahwa ia telah berusaha sekuat tenaga, namun tidak ada hasilnya. Karena itu ia merasa seperti seorang yang gagal -- kalah dan tidak berdaya. Tidak ada harapan. Ia mempunyai dua jalan untuk menanggapi hal tersebut saat ini: pertama, menjadi terdorong untuk berperilaku yang tidak produktif, misalnya: mengikuti arus zaman, mabuk-mabukan, memakai obat bius, kebut-kebutan, atau terlibat dalam suatu perkelahian. Jalan yang kedua adalah menjadi acuh tak acuh atau apatis. Satu contoh adalah tidur terus- menerus.

3) Fokusnya adalah pada pembebasan. "Keluarkan aku dari keadaan ini!" merupakan keinginan dan jeritannya. Ia ingin lepas dari penderitaan karena stres tersebut. Kondisinya tidak memungkinkan dia untuk bertindak secara rasional dalam menghadapi masalah itu. Kadang-kadang seseorang yang berada dalam keadaan krisis kelihatan bingung atau bahkan memberikan reaksi dengan cara yang aneh-aneh. Dalam usaha-usaha mereka, mereka dalam keadaan agak kalut sehingga mengharapkan orang lain untuk menolong. Mereka mungkin akan terlalu bergantung kepada orang lain untuk menolongnya keluar dari permasalahan yang mereka hadapi.

4) Pada masa itu efisiensi menurun. Orang-orang dalam krisis yang aktif mungkin akan tetap berfungsi secara normal, tetapi daya bereaksi mereka yang seharusnya 100% mungkin menurun sampai sekitar 60%. Semakin besar ancaman dari penilaian orang itu akan situasi yang dihadapi, semakin kurang efektif kemampuannya untuk mengatasi. Mereka mungkin sadar akan hal ini yang selanjutnya mematahkan semangat mereka.

Sedangkan dalam Wikipedia dijelaskan unsur – unsur krisis, mempunyai ciri khas sebagai berikut:

a) Krisis terjadi pada sistem yang kompleks (Sistem yang simpel atau sederhana tidak dapat dikenai krisis). Misalnya kita dapat menyebut terjadi krisis moral dan nilai – nilai, krisis ekonomi, krisis politik, krisis pangan, tapi tidak dapat dikatakan krisis makanan kecil.

b) Tidak berfungsinya sistem – sistem dengan baik. Perlu diingat, pada saat krisis suatu sistem tetap berfungsi dan tidak sampai berhenti sama sekali, walaupun kinerjanya buruk.

c) Keputusan yang cepat sangat penting diambil untuk menghentikan hancurnya suatu sistem lebih jauh.

d) Penyebab krisis sangat banyak dan tidak diketahui sehingga tidak mungkin diambil keputusan rasional dan familiar untuk membalikkan keadaan tersebut.

Krisis memiliki beberapa karakteristik. Menurut Seeger, Sellnow dan Ulmer “krisis memiliki tiga karakter, yaitu spesifik, tidak terduga, dan bukan kejadian yang terjadi setiap hari atau rangkaian kejadian yang menimbulkan tingkat ketidakpastian yang tinggi dan mengancam atau dianggap mengancam tujuan yang paling utama dari suatu organisasi.” Dengan kata lain suatu kejadian dikatakan krisis jika memiliki 3 karakteristik berikut: (1) tidak terduga (mengejutkan); (2) menimbulkan ketidakpastian; (3) dipandang sebagai ancaman terhadap tujuan – tujuan yang penting. Venette menyatakan bahwa “krisis adalah suatu proses transformasi dimana sistem lama tidak dapat dipertahankan lagi.” Oleh karena itu, karakteris ke empat adalah kebutuhan akan perubahan. Jika perubahan tidak diperlukan, maka kejadian atau situasi tersebut dapat dikatakan sebagai suatu kegagalan.

C. Jenis - Jenis Krisis

Wikipedia merumuskan jenis – jenis krisis sebagai berikut:

1. Krisis yang menyangkut masalah kemiskinan.

Terdapat dua jenis krisis yang masuk dalam kategori ini, yaitu:

a. Krisis karena tidak memiliki pekerjaan. Krisis ini dapat mengakibatkan seseorang tidak memiliki tempat tinggal atau menjadi gelandangan. Kesulitan keuangan juga dapat mengarahkan seseorang pada kekurangan gizi dan makanan, mengalami depresi, dan mengalami berbagai penyakit.

b. Krisis karena pekerjaan yang dilakukan tidak sesuai dengan kualifikasi seseorang. Misalnya seorang sarjana bekerja sebagai tukang batu atau kuli bangunan. Krisis ini sering kali terjadi akibat kurangnya lapangan pekerjaan. Akibat dari krisis ini seseorang dapat merasa rendah diri, mengalami stress mental, dan tidak banyak melakukan kontak sosial dengan sesama pekerja karena minder.

2. Krisis Ekonomi

Krisis ekonomi adalah transisi yang tajam dimana terjadi penurunan siklus bisnis dan secara umum memperlambat kegiatan perekonomian.

3. Krisis Lingkungan

Terdapat tiga jenis krisis yang masuk dalam kategori ini, yaitu:

(a) Bencana Lingkungan: Bencana yang diakibatkan oleh aktifitas manusia. Akibat perubahan – perubahan yang dilakukan manusia terhadap ekosistem (misalnya penebangan hutan secara liar, pembukaan lahan baru bagi pertanian dan pemukiman, dan sebagainya) menyebabkan konsekuensi yang menyebar dan tidak berkesudahan. Hal ini termasuk punah atau matinya hewan – hewan, tumbuhan, bahkan manusia, dan terancamnya kehidupan manusia.

(b) Bencana Alam: adalah bencana yang diakibatkan secara alami oleh alam (misalnya meledaknya gunung berapi, gempa bumi, dan longsor). Bencana alam dapat mengakibatkan hilangnya nyawa manusia, harta benda, ketidakstabilan sistem politik dan ekonomi.

(c) Terancam Punahnya Beberapa Spesies: adalah populasi dari suatu organisme yang terancam punah antara lain diakibatkan karena semakin berkurang jumlahnya, terancam oleh perubahan lingkungan, dan terbatasnya sumber makanan.

4. Krisis Internasional

Krisis ini didefinisikan secara bebas sebagai suatu keadaan atau situasi dimana muncul persepsi adanya ancaman, meningkatnya kecemasan, kemungkinan munculnya tindak kekerasan, dan keyakinan bahwa tindakan apapun yang muncul dapat memperluas akibat yang ditimbulkan. Contoh krisis internasional adalah krisis ekonomi global, terorisme, tsunami samudra hindia (tsunami aceh 2004).

5. Krisis Pribadi. Krisis pribadi dapat muncul akibat peristiwa luar biasa yang terjadi pada kehidupan seseorang, yang menyebabkan ketegangan dan stress yang sangat besar, dimana keadaan ini membutuhkan pengambilan keputusan yang penting dan tindakan yang tepat sebagai jalan keluarnya. Misalnya kehilangan pekerjaan, kesulitan ekonomi, kecanduan alkohol dan napza.

D. Kebutuhan - kebutuhan Manusia Dalam Krisis

Ada 14 kategori konseli yang membutuhkan pelayanan untuk menyelesaikan masalah krisis yaitu:

1. konseli yang menginginkan seseorang yang kuat untuk melindungi dan mengontrol mereka (tolong ambil alih masalah saya).

2. konseli yang membutuhkan seseorang yang menolong mereka berhubungan dengan kenyataan (tolong saya mengetahui bahwa saya bersifat nyata).

3. konseli yang merasakan kekosongan dan membutuhkan kasih (peliharalah saya).

4. konseli yang membutuhkan konselor untuk rasa aman nya (beradalah selalu untuk saya).

5. konseli yang dipengaruhi rasa bersalah dan ingin mengaku (ambillah rasa bersalah ku).

6. konseli yang membutuhkan mencurahkan segala persoalan nya (biarkan aku mencurahkan isi hati ku).

7. konseli yang merindukan nasihat-nasihat (katakan apa yang seharusnya ku lakukan).

8. konseli yang berusaha memisah-misahkan ide-ide mereka yang kompleks (tolong aku menempatkan ide-ide pada perspektif seharusnya).

9. konseli yang rindu mengerti sendiri dan mempunyai wawasan tentang masalah mereka (saya minta konseling).

10. konseli yang meilihat kegelisahan mereka sebagai masalah medis yang memerlukan perawatan dokter (aku perlu dokter).

11. konseli yang memerlukan bantuan praktis seperti bantuan ekonomi atau tempat tinggal (aku membutuhkan bantuan khusus).

12. konseli yang menganggap kesulitan mereka disebabkan hubungan-hubungan yang sedang berlangsung (lakukan itu untuk ku).

13. konseli yang membutuhkan informasi memuaskan berbagai kebutuhan mereka (katakana pada ku dimana aku dapat mencari pertolongan).

14. orang-orang yang tidak punya motivasi atau orang-orang gila yang dibawa kepada konselor tanpa kehendak mereka (aku tak membutuhkan apa-apa).

E. TAHAP – TAHAP KRISIS

Menurut Nova (2009:110-111) ada lima tahapan dalam siklus hidup krisis, yang dijelaskan sebagai berikut:

1. Tahap Pre-Crisis (Sebelum Krisis)

Pre-crisis adalah kondisi sebelum suatu krisis muncul. Benih krisis sudah ada, sehingga jika muncul suatu kesalahan yang kecil saja, krisis dapat terjadi. Benih yang mulai tumbuh pada tahap ini, biasanya tidak begitu diperhatikan karenanya tidak ada perencanaan menghadapi krisis.

2. Tahap Warning (Peringatan)

Dalam tahap ini suatu masalah pertama kali dikenali, dapat dipecahkan, diakhiri selamanya, atau dibiarkan berkembang menuju pada kerusakan yang menyeluruh. Krisis dapat dengan mudah muncul pada tahap ini karena ketakutan menghadapi “badai” atau “masalah” dan menganggapnya tidak ada. Reaksi umum yang terjadi pada tahap ini adalah kaget, menyangkal, dan pura – pura merasa aman.

3. Tahap Acute Crisis (Akut)

Pada tahap inilah krisis mulai terbentuk. Jika krisis sudah sampai tahap ini, seseorang atau suatu sistem tidak dapat berdiam diri, karena akibat krisis mulai menimbulkan kerugian. Saat ini, segala upaya dilakukan untuk menghadapi krisis.

4. Tahap Clean-up (Pembersihan)

Pada tahap ini dilakukan pemulihan dari kerugian – kerugian yang diakibatkan oleh krisis. Dalam tahap pemulihan dapat melibatkan pihak – pihak lain misalnya konselor, pihak penegak hukum, dan para ahli – ahli lain terkait dengan krisis yang dihadapi.

5. Tahap Post-Crisis (Sesudah Krisis)

Ketika seseorang atau suatu sistem kembali ke kondisi yang normal dan dapat berfungsi dengan baik, maka secara formal dapat dikatakan krisis telah berakhir.

Sedangkan Wright dalam Haksasi (2010) merumuskan empat fase yang terjadi dalam setiap peristiwa krisis, yang dikelompokkan sebagai berikut:

Wah.. dadar gulung, ga ngejual banget niy judulnya.. gue ganti aja..

Judul baru:

--ON THE INTERNET, NOBODY KNOWS YOU’RE A DOG --

Tentunya, ga semua orang mau menikmati biji melinjo seperti itu. Banyak juga orang yang justru cepat banget give up ama rasa. Kenapa?? Yaa karena itu tadi, banyak orang yang ga mau menikmati rasa itu, dan membiarkan lidah terbiasa. Padahal tubuh kita ini luar biasa banget. Sebenarnya, kalau kita membiasakan makan sesuatu yang kita ga suka, sebut aja daun pepaya atau buah pare yang pahit, maka lama kelamaan tubuh kita akan menerima dan doyan sendiri, atau istilah londo-nya, craving ama makanan itu. Itu alami dan ilmiah. Tapi kita ga usah bahas disini yaa? Selain untuk menghindari para pembaca akan jatuh tertidur, gue juga ga punya fakta-fakta pendukung yang kuat. Secara gue bukan expert apalagi ilmuan. Plus kalau – kalau ada yang merasa nama baiknya terancam, hanya karena gue nulis opini gue, atau ungkapan hati gue. Trus gue di sue, diperkarain, terakhir dipenjara, atau disuruh bayar denda beratus-ratus juta. Dan secara duit gue ga banyak-banyak amat, plus gue ga yakin bakal ada Koin Peduli mantan waitress kayak gue.

Makanya, gue memutuskan untuk membatasi informasi yang pengen gue kasi tau ke orang banyak. Bener ga? Mending diem dan sakit perut seumur hidup, karena ga ngasi tau informasi yang kita anggap akan bermanfaat bagi kepentingan orang banyak, daripada udah cape – cape nulis dan ngasi tau, eh mala dipenjara. Belum lagi, kalo pake acara dipukulin dulu, untuk mengakui tuduhan yang ditudingkan (atau mengakui tuduhan yang dibuat - buat?). Nasib.. nasiibb.. hidup di Indonesia.. dimana hukum dan aparat hukum sudah busuk, bak ikan busuk. Mau dikasi garem untuk diasinkan, ga bisa. Mau digoreng, bakalan ancur dalam minyak. Sekali lagi.. nasiiibb... nasiiibb...

Kalau mau hidup aman di negeri ini, emang harus banyak-banyak dan sering-sering membatasi kemampuan luar biasa semua panca indera lo. Jadi misalnya, kalo lo punya kemampuan merasakan ketidakadilan, mendingan lo tulis di diary lo aja, ga usah sok nulis di internet gini kayak gue. Walopun waktu jaman kuliah dulu, pembahasan akademik tentang Internet sebagai media communication hybrid, berbeda 180° dengan kenyataan sehari-hari, yang terjadi akhir-ahir ini di tanah air tercinta. Kalo secara akademik siy.. menurut Barr (2002)[1], di salah satu tulisannya yang berjudul “The Internet and Online Communication”, dia nyebut internet itu sebagai “a beast of different kind”. Menurut gue kalimat ini adalah metaphor yang sangat tepat untuk mendefinisikan penemuan terdahsyat abad 21 ini. “A beast of different kind”, kalo menurut terjemahan bebas gue, berarti sejenis creature dengan kualitas dan karakteristik bak raksasa atau monster, namun dari spesies yang berbeda.

Kita mungkin pernah dengar kata beast muncul dalam judul film/cerita Beauty and The Beast. Tokoh Beast dalam cerita ini digambarkan sebagai mahluk setengah monster, setengah manusia. Tubuhnya adalah tubuh manusia, namun bagian wajahnya menyeramkan seperti monster atau sejenis creature yang menakutkan. Namun dibalik wajah yang menakutkan dan sosok seperti raksasa yang ganas, The Beast berhati lembut, penuh kasih dan kebaikan. Kualitas itulah yang membuatnya unik dan berbeda dari karakteristik monster atau raksasa, yang sering diasosiasikan sebagai mahluk jahat pemangsa manusia dalam dongeng – dongeng.

Bagi pak Trevor Barr, the Internet digambarkan seperti The Beast, yang mempunyai dua sisi kepribadian yang unik dan berbeda dari jenisnya. Menurutnya, the Internet merupakan suatu sistem informasi, dimana orang-orang menggunakannya untuk mencari informasi melalui search engine. Secara bersamaan juga, Internet adalah medium dimana orang dapat mengkaryakan dirinya sesuai dengan kapasitas masing-masing dan mendistribusikan karya tersebut melalui platform World Wide Web (WWW). Karakter inilah yang kadang kala dipandang sebagai sisi Internet yang bersifat monstrous The Beast. Mengapa demikian? Sebelum menjawab hal di atas, gue pengen berbagi opini, tentang mengapa Internet menjadi trend dan fenomena terbesar abad 21?

Jawabannya adalah Internet membuka peluang mewujudkan apa yang sebelumnya terasa tidak mungkin terjadi dan dilakukan, menjadi kenyataan. Internet membuka peluang bagi setiap orang untuk menjadi the creator (pencipta), the producer (pembuat), the author (penulis), person responsible or person behind (penanggung jawab/pengarah/pengatur), sekaligus menjadi the audience (penonton), the receiver (penerima informasi). Konsep dan praktik pluralisme Internet, didefinisikan sebagai suatu proses yang menghasilkan berbagai macam opini/ide/kreativitas/ilmu dan informasi, dari berbagai dan bermacam sumber. Kondisi yang seakan – akan membebaskan semua orang, siapa saja, untuk melakukan apa saja yang mereka inginkan inilah, yang dianggap sebagai “ancaman”, “bahaya”, bagi terwujudnya manusia “tertib aturan” dan “taat hukum”. Namun aturan siapa dan hukum siapa? Ini yang mesti di highlight.

Flew (2002) dalam bukunya New Media: an Introduction [2] menjelaskan bahwa perkembangan terpenting kedua dari Internet, setelah packet switching, adalah perkembangan suatu set networking protocol yang universal, yang memungkinkan para researchers diberbagai local area networks (LANs) saling berkomunikasi satu sama lain, melalui koneksi internal LANs ke wide area network (WAN). Protokol inti dari Internet disebut Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), yang berperan penting dalam internetworking, yaitu sebagai penghubung berbagai jenis networking yang berbeda dan berbagai sistem komputer. Dengan kata lain, TCP/IP menjadi “language” atau “Bahasa Nasional” atau “Bahasa Pemersatu” Internet, yang memungkinkan terjadinya lintas komunikasi antar network atau cross-network communication bagi hampir semua jenis komputer (Apples, PCs, Mainframes) dan network (lokal atau nasional). Dengan kata lain lagi, TCP/IP inilah yang menjadikan Internet sebagai suatu medium komunikasi global bagi penggunanya, dimana semua komputer dan network dapat saling berkomunikasi dalam bahasa yang sama. Karena rancangan TCP/IP ini dipublikasikan open standard, artinya model atau prototype nya disediakan untuk umum atau tidak dimiliki oleh perusahaan apapun, maka karakteristik terpenting yang dihasilkan dari Internet adalah komunikasi hybrid yang bersifat global dan bebas, serta tersedia bagi siapa saja yang dapat mengaksesnya.

Hakekat Internet sebagai medium yang unimpeded atau unrestricted dalam dunia informasi, merupakan perbedaan mendasar Internet dengan media lain seperti televisi, radio, koran, majalah dan lain sebagainya. Karena dengan begitu, tidak seorangpun berkuasa untuk mengontrol isi/informasinya (termasuk bagaimana, kapan, dan dimana menyampaikannya) karena tidak seorangpun punya hak kepemilikan/owenership Internet (Nobody can control the Internet because nobody owns the Internet). Karena sifat ini pula, pada hakikatnya, semua orang memiliki kesempatan yang sama, dalam menyampaikan informasi, dalam berkomunikasi, beropini, berkarya, dan menciptakan identitas dirinya sendiri. Contoh: ngakunya perempuan, padahal laki – laki ; ngaku pria single umur 25 tahun, padahal: married, 2 kids, and 35 years old ; umur masih 15 tahun, ngaku – ngaku udah 18 tahun (kalo ga ngaku – ngaku mana bisa punya email, apalagi sampai facebook – an? Bah!), etc. etc.

Sayangnya, ada segelintir orang yang tidak memahami atau tidak ingin memahami karakteristik terpenting internet ini (i.e. kebebasan menyampaikan informasi, kebebasan berkomunikasi, kebebasan berpendapat, kebebasan mengeluarkan ide, berkreasi, berinovasi, dan kebebasan menjadi apapun yang kita inginkan). Kebebasan berbicara dinegara yang mengagung-ngagungkan demokrasi ini, dan tidak memfavoritkan bentuk-bentuk pemerintahan orde lama, ternyata bukan untuk semua orang. Di negara ini, lo bebas mengeluarkan pendapat selama lo setuju ama pendapat penguasa. Ironis, setelah bertahun-tahun kita memproklamirkan kemerdekaan dari bangsa-bangsa yang kita anggap penjajah yang kejam (portugis, belanda, jepang, you name it. Eh, itu udah semua ya?? Hihiho..) ternyata kita masih terjajah oleh penguasa-penguasa baru. Yang merasa penguasa harap jangan tersinggung, tapi kalo udah terlanjur tersinggung... derita lo!

Okok, gue mau mengakhiri bagian ini, tapi gue mau nyambung-nyambungin dulu ama statement gue di atas tentang makan biji melinjo dengan judul bagian ini, BELAJAR BERADAPTASI... blablabla, plus bahasan tentang internet dan free speech.. Setelah gue baca-baca lagi, kok ga nyambung yaa... hahahaha. Tapi rugi dong kalo gue apus, gue udah ngetik panjang-panjang ini. Yaa udah gue sambung-sambungin aja yaa... toh emang kebanyakan orang Indonesia suka nyambung-nyambungin masalah yang ga nyambung, dan nyari-nyari alesan untuk merasionalisasikan tindakannya. Naa berikut ini, adalah rasionalisasi dari tulisan gue di atas. Untuk dapat menikmati biji melinjo, setiap orang harus belajar beradaptasi dengan rasanya. Namun sekali lagi, kebanyakan orang begitu cepat give up sama yang namanya rasa. Rasa kasih, rasa peduli, rasa sungkan, rasa malu, rasa bersalah, rasain lo! :- D. Kebanyakan orang yang tidak mau belajar beradaptasi dengan situasi dan hal baru adalah orang-orang yang sangat mengutamakan kepentingannya saja atau kepentingan kelompoknya saja. Hal ini sebenarnya lumrah saja kalau ditempatkan pada situasi dan kondisi yang sesuai tempatnya. Lo masi ngerasa ga nyambung?? Yaa derita lo!

CHAPTER I: FIRST YEAR

--LDR – Long Distance Relationship--

Menjadi mahasiswa tahun pertama di perguruan tinggi, adalah pengalaman yang penuh perasaan campuraduk. Apalagi bagi yang baru-baru aja lulus SMU. Semakin campuraduk lagi, kalau ini pertama kalinya sekolah di luar daerah atau luar negeri, yang jauh dari orang tua, kakak adek, om tante, kakek nenek beserta famili-famili yang lain. Plus jauh dari teman-teman segank, juga teman-teman gaul. Untungnya kalau gak punya pacar (Gak punya pacar kok untung ya?? Namanya orang Indonesia, biar susah juga tetap aja untung), list prasaan campuraduknya berkurang satu. Kalo punya pacar di Indo trus kamunya sekolah diluar negri, kan susah kalo kangeun gada yang dicipok dan dipeluk. Trus juga gada yang bisa disuruh jadi supir buat ke salon, mall, dan tempat-tempat gaul lain (yang ini siy khusus buat cewe-cewe). Plus lagi, gada tempat buat dicurhatin or a shoulder to cry on kalo lagi seubeul ama kakak, adek, bapak, ibu, BFF (Best Friend Forever), dan tukang jual minyak (abis harga minyak naik mulu.. bah!!). Intinya, ga enak dey kalo pacaran jarak jauh. Yang pasti, berat di ongkos kalo mau ketemuan. Buntut-buntutnya jadi garing, trus brantem, capee deeyy.

Kalo ga telpon sehari aja.. udah mikirnya yang ganjil-ganjil, kayak.. kenapa yaa gak telpon, gak kangen apa? Masa siy sibuk banget sampe lupain aku, padahal aku udah nungguin telponnya seharian. (Yah.. salahnya kamyu, emang gak ada kerjaan lain, selain nungguin telpon seharian?) Trus kalo ditelpon gak diangkat-angkat, pasti bawaannya curiga. Miskolnya aja ampe 10 kali… (Miskol doang, biar ditelpon balik, pacaran kok ga modal :-P). Padahal, mungkin aja pacar lo lagi di kelas, ada kuliyah or lecture and tutorial (istilah londonya). Ato kali aja lagi diwese, kencing, berak, ato bedakan (khusus buat yang cewe niy.., tapi kalo cowo juga mo bedakan diwese, monggo lho..hihiho). Yang paling annoying lagi, kalo sms gak dibales. Biasanya bakalan disms lagi:

Perasaan campur aduknya niy, kalau dibuat sayur.. jadi sayur asem kali yaa.. kenapa?? Karna, sayur asem, walopun namanya sayur asem, rasanya bermacem-macem, secara campurannya kan macem-macem juga. Rasa asemnya.. pastinya dari asem laa yaa.. trus ada rasa manis-manisnya dikit, yang asalnya either dari jagung manisnya atau gula yang biasanya ditambahin dikit buat penyedap rasa. Ga asik kayaknya kalo sayur asem ga ada manisnya dikit. Naa rasa pahitnya.. asalnya dari biji melinjo.. ga pahit-pahit ama siy.. pas awal digigit doang.. tapi, lama-lama jadi enak kok kalo dinikmatin, dan diselingi dengan menghirup kuahnya yang asem manis itu (setidaknya, itu menurut gue). Terakhir dan yang paling penting adalah rasa asin. Semua makanan kalo ga pake garem, pasti hambar dan ga asik. Makanya, dalam dunia masak dimanapun dibelahan dunia ini... garam adalah ingredient yang terpenting.

Kesimpulannya.. dalam menjalani hidup ini, apa aja itu bentuknya, perasaan campuraduk kayak sayur asem tadi adalah hal yang biasa. Harus dinikmati seperti memakan biji melinjo yang awalnya pahit, tapi lama-lama terasa enak.

A WEB ANALYSIS - LORD OF THE RINGS & POWERHOUSE MUSEUM WEBSITES

The web was built by million of people simply because they wanted it. As a distributed browsing and searching system, the web functions as a huge library with its vast storehouses of information. The introduction of the World Wide Web in 1991 led the transformation of the Internet from a text-only environment into a multimedia site. It allows for incorporating and displaying colourful pictures, animations, sounds and video. This is why the web makes the Internet as a powerful communication medium and a warehouse of valuable information. As a multimedia text, a web or website has become a medium to produce social, cultural and political expression. It has generated representation of human being as individual and society. This essay will analyse Lord of the Rings website (http://www.lordoftherings.net) and Powerhouse Museum (http://www.powerhousemuseum.com). The analysis will explore social, cultural, and political meanings of the websites. It also will describe potential meanings and how they are created. These aspects will be dealt with in turn in this essay.

According to Bhatnagar, Mehta & Mitra (2001:139):Typeface are divided into two broad categories: Serif [e.g. Times New Roman] and Sans Serif [e.g. Arial]… On paper, serif fonts are easy on the eye because the flags at the end of the letter stroke guide the eye along the line. So, serif fonts, such as Times, are used when there is a lot of tet to be read. Sans Serif typefaces, such as Arial, are used for titles and headlines. On computer screens, the situation is different. Screen resolution is poor which makes the flags on letters difficult to read. Therefore, serif fonts are difficult to read on-screen.Unlike most of websites, The Lord Of The Rings (LOTR)’ website does not use sans serif as the title or headlines, but serif typeface. However, sans serif is used to show all information about the site e.g. if we click all parts in “THE FILM”; “THE LEGEND”; & “THE IMAGINARY”, it will show us all the information in sans serif typeface.

There are two reasons I will explain about the use of serif typeface as the title or headlines LOTR site. The first explanation is aesthetic reason. As Mclean (1980:64) puts it “The serif, … when written with pen, or cut in stone, for reasons that are both functional and decorative.” The way the title/headlines written in serif font makes LOTR’s website looks more attractive and eye-catching. It gives us a feeling of engagement with the movie and also a feeling of enjoyment from being entertained. It urges us to want to look more and to see more information we might have/not expected before. This is precisely what the LOTR’s website is all about. The Website not only gives us information that we cannot find in the movie, but also entertains us through juxtaposition of visuals and writings, e.g. the style of font, size, and colour. The second explanation is cultural representation of the website. According to Mclean (1980:44) “The basic principle is that roman type [serif typeface] has become “norm” for most Europeans & Americans”. Since serif is the standard typeface in western culture, thus combination of certain colors, font type and size convey meanings and representation of the LOTR as a classic high fantasy tale in western culture.

Poynor (2001:51 in Cranny-Francis 2005: 34) “the process by which particular typeface embody the look, mood, and aspirations of a period is mysterious and fascinating. It cannot be predicted with any accuracy and no single designer can will it to happen, but somehow a typeface will look fresh, unexpected, precisely attuned to the moment – and a consensus emerges.” It means that when we look at the website of LOTR, it situates historically and culturally not just by the images, or by the colours, or the language employed in the website, but also by the typeface used. Typeface embodies a particular time in the past in fictional world. It then reminds us of other similar texts – websites – such as harry potter (http://harrypotter.warnerbros.com), and the chronicle of narnia (http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/narnia).

The visualisation of images combine with colours and the style of font, tells us that The LOTR’s website is drawn from the legend/myth particularly in western culture, It is a high fantasy tale, which is the sub genre of fantasy fiction. The movie itself is a trilogy of live action fantasy epic films. The website could be categorized as the entertainment site since it provides not only the exclusive images from all three LOTR movies that we can download, but also contains the extended information about the movie or the story, for instance in “THE LEGEND” part: characters, cultures, weapon and war, locations, insides the effects, interviews.

The sound effect comes out as soon as we fully access the web, generates a visceral response. Responses that are resembling feelings of menace and terror, but at the same time there are also feelings of curiosity and adventure. This happens as the result of combination of loudness, pitch, and timbre. Together with a brief sound effect at the beginning, we also can hear the welcome greeting from different casts of the LOTR’s movies. The sound is creating an emotional environment and the same time it livens up the mood of visitors. As Cranny-Francis (2005:60) puts it “… sound can be touching in more than a metaphorical sense. It is a semiotic that is experienced bodily, as more than a bundle of sense impressions to interpret. Sound can bodily move us, and we embody ourselves in (response to) sound.”

When we look at around the website, the websites gives us an insight of how humanity placed in fictional past – people and cultures of LOTR – represents humanity in our real contemporary world with different kind of habits, traditions, languages, colours but also similar in concept of peace, war, and survival. These then lead to power mechanisms and practice discourse. It is knowledge as power’s instrument has constructed to convince every individual to believe it as the truth. How the concept of peace, war, survival, and society for every human race is constructed through the relation of knowledge and truth. Foucault (in Gordon, 1980:97) puts it “… how it is that subjects are gradually, progressively, really and materially constituted through a multiplicity of organism, forces, energies, materials, desires, thoughts, etc. We should try to grasp subjection in its material instance as a constitution of subjects” It other words power generate people to perform certain behaviour, thoughts, feelings and desires in order to produce certain subjectivity. As soon as we know who we are, our races, cultures, believes, and so on, we interpret the concept of peace, war, survival and society according to the truth planted in our society.

The next multimedia text to be analysis is the website of Powerhouse Museum Sydney Australia. Powerhouse Museum’s website does not emphasis on aesthetic function. The website is more informative and educational. As any other educational websites, which stress on giving information rather than entertaining the visitor, Powerhouse Museum uses conventional style in way of conveying the information, such as the style of font – sans serif, the size and the colour seem very simple, regular and serious. This is one of characteristics of educational websites, where the chosen of typeface as a decorative function is not significant. The more important is what inside the web could provide the needs of visitors when they go to the website. Visitors will be expected to read rather than to enjoy the images around the web most of the time. Hence sans serif is the right typeface to convey the information, since it is easier to read on computer screen than serif.

The main list of options that the website offered such as Exhibitions & Events, Education, Collection & Research, Online Research are in fact representing Powerhouse Museum as the website of education, science, art and technology. The juxtaposition of visual images and writings signify the vision of Powerhouse Museum to celebrate and explore human creativity and innovation. The image of two little girls for instance, could signify the commitment of Powerhouse Museum to promote education and science in the future. It also could represent diverse audiences, which have inspired and informed the advance of Powerhouse Museum to explore design and history for the people of New South Wales and beyond. As Barthes (1977:39, in Kress, G. & van Leeuween, T. 1996:16) puts it, “The meaning of the images [and of other semiotic codes] is always related to, and, in a sense, dependent on, verbal text. Images are too ‘polysemous’, too open to a variety of possible meanings. To arrive at a definite meaning, language [text] must come to the rescue”. This website then leads us to the discourse about the impact of science and technology in our everyday lives.

Powerhouse Museum’s website is a depiction of new culture or way of living in our contemporary world today, where we are really affected by science and technology. Together with the era of digitalization and the Internet, the world seems not so big and places not so far one to each other. Since science and knowledge are always considered as a process of progression, Powerhouse Museum is an explanation about how science and technology will bring the world to the future. The question raised is how the future would be like when the worlds were so scientific and technological? Would it be utopia or dystopia? We might answer this question by questioning ourselves in what way we use, and how we treat science and technology for our better lives. And that is what the Powerhouse Museum’s website is all about.

In conclusion, it appears that since the development of the World Wide Web in the early 90s has brought powerful impact to change and shape the way we live in this world. As we go through the website of Lord of the Rings and Powerhouse Museum, we recognize how the websites have been constructed not in a simple single meaning. They both have represented the social, cultural, and political meanings through the juxtaposition of visual image, writing – typefaces – and sound. Through all combination of those aspects the websites have succeeded signifying the function and the purpose of the creation of both.

WAR ON WHAT - AN ANTI WAR POSTER

ANALYSIS OF MULTIMEDIA PRACTICAL RESEARCH PROJECT

Posters are a frequent tool of advertisers, propagandists, and protestors to communicate their massages. The use of poster as medium to convey the intended purposes could give great impact for its viewer or audience in a way that they could easily being persuaded by the content of a poster. This is because most of posters utilise specific words or combination of words – images to create meanings of the messages. The main idea of this poster is an anti-war protest. It is a self-expression to react against wars. Many people believe that there is never a good side to war. It is innocent children that have suffered the most from war and we have lost many of precious children, soldiers and innocent people because of it. This kind of anti war poster is a crucial tool not only to promote anti war campaign but also to support victims of wars in order to make the world a better place to live. This essay will analyse the use of poster as multimedia product to represent the practice of communication through juxtaposition of verbal texts – in term of typography –, representation of colours and images. This poster will be analysed in the context of its intended purpose, that is an anti-war protest. All aspects of analysis – verbal texts, colour and images – will be dealt with in turn in this essay.

Walter J. Ong in his book Orality and Literacy (1982) explains since the introduction of the technology of writing, it becomes the most drastic invention in human history. This is particularly in way it started the next generation of different type of writing forms such as print and computer. As he wrote “It [writing] initiated what print and computers only continue, the reduction of dynamic sound to quiescent space, separation of the word from the living present, where alone spoken words can exist” (Ong, 1982 : 82). Writing is not merely a bad copy of spoken word. Writing in fact has changed the way we think and talk. This is what Derrida in his book Of Grammatology was trying to draw. He coined the term “deconstruction” as crucial opposition between speech and writing. Derrida’s theory of deconstruction describes writing as a technology and communicative practice for indicating the politics of a situation or an event or act. He expresses the meaning of writing by stating, “The idea of the book, in which always refers to a natural totality, is profoundly alien to the sense of writing. It is the encyclopaedic protection of theology and of logocentrism against the disruption of writing, against its aphoristic energy, and, … against difference in general” (Derrida, 1976 : 18).

This poster tries to communicate the message using combination of writing, images and colour. The expectation of this attempt is that the audience will stop and look, then interpret the meaning of the message according to their own perception. As a tool of communication, writing has a powerful impact on our consciousness in way it could change our perception about the world around us. Ong, (1982 : 82) explains how technology of writing could affect our consciousness:
Like other artificial creations and indeed more than any other, it is utterly invaluable and indeed essential for the realisation of fuller, interior, human potentials. Technologies are not mere exterior aids but also interior transformations of consciousness, and never more than when they affect the word. Such transformations can be uplifting. Writing heightens consciousness.
As a central processor in our mind, consciousness will make a selection which stimulus is most likely being processed as information. As Hodd & White, JR (1980 : 34) explain “Naturally, we would except the pertinent percepts generated earlier to have a greater probability of entering consciousness than the less valued percepts.” Certain stimuli are selected and occupy consciousness because they have certain characteristics that draw our attention. This is for instance people organise ads in a manner so as to capture attention. Contrast, Colour and size of print are important characteristics to raise our consciousness.

On the choice of typeface, the title War On What uses shlop type of font designed by Ray Larabie. The reason to use this type of font is simply because it gives sense of terror and fear. And this type of font is a useful tool to illustrate the horror of the war. Gage (1999 : 22) states that “responses to colour, it is argued, go back to archetypal human experiences of black night, white bone, red blood, and so on.” The use of combination black-red on white could signify dead and blood, brought by war to the children and many innocent people, who suffer and die without even know and understand what war is about. White signifies cleanliness and purity for children and other innocent people. As Tschichold (2001 : 120) puts it “New Typography colour is used functionally, i.e. physiological effect peculiar to each colour is used to increase or decrease the importance of a block of type, a photograph, or whatever.” Hence, the already strong contrasts between black – the basic colour of the poster – and white can be greatly enhanced by the addition of red.

The same idea for the words GREED, ANGER, JEALOUSY, HATRED, AROGANCE, HEGEMONY is to signify the meaning of the word itself through this type of font – horror designed by Patrick Broderick –. The contrast colour between black and white explicitly indicates bad and good or darkness and lightness. The words in black signify bad qualities of human being. Whereas white signifies the nature of the world as a representation of the characteristics of God – purity, cleanliness, and sacredness –. The idea is derived from the iconography in the early Middle Ages, where the use of these colours in the Western Church represents specific offices. “Black, wrote Innocent III about 1200, is emblematic of penance and mourning, and thus used for Advent and Lent, white of innocent and purity, and was used on the feast of the Virgin…” (Gage, 1999 : 70).

The poem at the right side of the poster uses bearpaw font – designed by Dennis Anderson –. The font seems as it is written by hand with repeated lines and shapes. The intended purpose is to give sense that someone has written the poem for the soldiers and also for the war victims who died because of war. The last sentence “By the loss of another precious child” after the words “A World Diminished” is put above the images of war victims, which is in a grave shape. These sentences reinforce the images and the grave or vice versa, in order to deliver the message. As Cranny-Francis (2005 : 11) puts it “… the verbal and visual are interrelated to generate meanings.”

The juxtaposition of visual images and writings in the middle of the poster also generates the meaning and the idea of the poster. The title War On What related to this combination image-text, particularly the captions “WE’RE ONLY HERE FOR THE OIL” and “WHOSE WAR”. Both captions in satirical way indicate the political purpose (e.g. oil, money or profit) behind many wars, for instance The Iraq War or The Second Gulf War, which is by U.S. military, called Operation Iraqi Freedom. The question “WHOSE WAR” highlights the image of George W. Bush, JR. and his coalition groups who carry guns and money. This is what Barthes called “the text loads the image”. As he puts it “the image no longer illustrates the words; it is now the words which, structurally, are parasitic on the image” (Barthes, 1977 : 25). In other words the meaning of the image of George W. Bush, JR. and his coalition groups becomes more obvious with the words “WHOSE WAR” on it.

In short, all juxtaposition of images and texts has produced meanings that related to the intended purpose of this poster as an anti-war campaign. Barthes (1977:39, in Kress, G. & Theo Van Leeuwen, 1996:16) argues, “The meaning of the images [and of other semiotic codes] is always related to, and, in a sense, dependent on, verbal text. Images are too ‘polysemous’, too open to a variety of possible meanings. To arrive at a definite meaning, language [text] must come to the rescue”. In other words the images will be ‘disabled’ without verbal texts. And verbal texts furnish more obvious meaning to the images.

In summary, it appears that the utilisation of specific words or combination of words, colours, and images plays significant role to express the intended purpose of the poster. The choice of certain fonts and colours will affect the way we interpret the messages conveyed in the poster. The images also will be reinforced by the present of certain verbal texts. All these combinations will construct the whole point and idea of the poster.

A SHORT TRIP TO BANDUNG

A few weeks ago, on one lousy Sunday in Jakarta, I decided to pay Ibeth (my BFF – Best Friend Forever) a visit in Bandung – West Java. I took 2-ish Argo Gede train from Gambir in the arvo. The train arrived 30 minutes late – like always *hmpp. So I rushed to catch a cab to Ibeth’s, as we wanted to attend 6.30p Mass at Gereja Pandu on 4 Pandu Street – Pajajaran Street area. Gereja Pandu reminds me not only of a nice quite leafy area, with 20s-50s like ducth colonial bungalow, but it will also and always remind me of some real tasty food selling around the area.

The one that I love the most is Nasi Kuning, sold just exactly at Pandu Street entry, if you come from Pajajaran Street. What makes this Nasi Kuning very appetizing is its super hot Sambel Oncom (Oncom Chili Sauce). You might as well want to mix it with Sambel Terasi (Dried Shrimp Chili Sauce), if you love everything and anything spicy. Hmm.. tasty!! Bet you can’t help yourself to imagine how scrumptious Nasi Kuning Pandu is. You gotta come early, but. Say around 6-ish in the morning, because if you come at 10... I’m pretty sure, no more Nasi Kuning Pandu left for you.

Of coz i didn’t get my Nasi Kuning after the 6.30p Mass. But I still get a chance to have a fine delectable dinner and a quick handy evening shopping at PVJ Mall – Paris Van Java Mall. OH... MY... GOD!! It was one of my finest and coolest shopping nights since I am back to Indo. Me and Ibeth took a Lembang – St.Hall “angkot” (one of the most popular public transportations in Bandung and in some provinces in Indonesia. It’s sort of like small van or family car). It sure cheaper than taxi. It costed us Rp. 1000,- per person from Istana Plaza to PVJ Mall. Some say angkot is not safety and is incovenience for tourist, but if you’re into adventure and looking for exciting experience, then by all means you should try angkot! Paris Van Java Mall is on 137 – 139 Sukajadi Street. Offers you the quite attractive atmosphere, a mix and match setting between outdoor and indoor mall. First stop was Sagoo Kitchen. An old-fashioned chinese-betawi style of design theme restaurant. The restaurant is decorated with replicating goods and food from 50s – early 80s or “the-hard-to-find stuff” and those that sold only at the traditional market e.g. rattan and bamboo storage baskets, krupuk (flavored crackers), coklat ayam (ayam brand chocolate milk), alba patilles candy, and other retro and old time candies, snacks and drinks.

The furnitures and tablewares are also designed with the old timey style. Even the menus are written with the old indonesian spelling, e.g. nasi goreng roewet (ruwet fried rice, rodjak malaysia (malaysian fruit and vegetable salad dish), mee & bee hon (noodle and rice vermicelli), mee djawa (javanese noodle), mee krioek (hot plate noodle), es/jus katjang ijo (mung bean juice), es kelapa djeroek (coconut and lime ice), and teh djahe (ginger tea).

We had mee djawa and jus katjang ijo, we also had anchovies fried rice take-away, which was really good. After dinner, we walked around the mall and found a bamboo handbags stall not far from MNG boutique. I bought a small bamboo satchel bag with yellow plait leather handles for my sister. We hung out and shopped a bit at Sogo and Rumah Bagus stall before heading home.

The next day, we came back and had lunch at QUA-LI, UG floor A-39. The food was great but a bit pricey plus the portion was a bit too small. I had nasi goreng sapi lada hitam (black pepper beef fried rice) and Ibeth had kwetiaw goreng (fried kwetiaw), said as one of the most favorite dishes of QUA-LI. We chilled out at Starbucks for an hour. I had soy caramel mocca, she had mocca frappuccino on skim. Smart choice!! I took 4.15 Argo Gede back to Jakarta. My Bandung weekend trip was awesome and fun!! Will be back again in a couple of weeks for sure. Hmmm really had a blast that weekend ^_^

THE SECOND MEDIA AGE – MEDIA CONVERGENCE, GLOBALISATION, AND PROPAGANDA MODEL

What do theorists mean by the 'second media age'? Do the kinds of media forms emerging suggest the need for new sociological concepts and analytic tool?

In any discussion of new media, a question that needs to be addressed is why some media are considered to be 'new'. It is however difficult to understand different degrees of 'newness' among and across various media, partly because the rate of change in media technologies, services, and uses has been so rapid that what we call 'new' in media technologies will quickly become dated. This is also because new media is basically an advance of old media. For instance the technology of the MP3 player or the iPOD is fundamentally a development from their former audio technologies such as Discman, Walkman, and Radio.

Until the 1980s media relied primarily upon print and analogue broadcast models, such as those of television and radio. The last twenty-five years have seen the rapid transformation into media, which are predicated upon the use of digital computers, such as the Internet and computer games. However, these examples are only a small representation of new media. New Media has become a significant element in everyday life. It allows people to communicate, bank, shop and entertain. The global network of the Internet, for instance, connects people and information via computers. In this way the Internet, as a communication medium of new media, overcomes the gap between people from different countries, permitting them to exchange opinions and information. This essay will discuss what theorists mean by ‘the second media age’ or what we call new media. This essay also will analyse the relationship between media convergence and globalisation to consider the need for new sociological concept and analytic tool with reference to the emergence of the new media. These aspects will be discussed in turn in this essay.

Meyrowitz (1985:317) states that our advanced technologies stage allow us to hunt and gather information rather than food. The evolution in media has changed the way we communicate by altering the ways in which we transmit and receive social information. This evolution has led us to what Fritz Machlup called the information society. As Webster (1994:315) puts it The common definition of the information society emphasises spectacular technological innovation. The key idea is that breakthroughs in information processing, storage, and transmission have led to the application of information technologies in virtually all corners of society. In other words this evolution route to the information society attend to the convergence of telecommunications and computing. In this sense information processing and storage technologies (e.g. computer) lead to widespread distribution.

In general we can define new media as those forms that combine computing and information technology (IT), communication networks, and digitised media and information content. The new media can also be thought of as digital media. According to Flew (2002:10) digital media are forms of media content that combine and integrate data, text, sound, and images of all kinds; are stored in digital formats, and distributed through networks based upon broadband fibre-optic cables, satellites, and microwave transmission systems. The digitalisation of information, combined with the development of related electronic technologies such as microprocessors, and so on has greatly increased the capacity to store and transmit information and has created the basis for a convergence of information and communication technologies, so that information can be converted relatively easily between different communication media.

The capability of new media to be easily changeable and adaptable at any forms of storage and transmission has assisted the information to be broadened. All forms of information also could be shared and changed among a large number of people who can access the net and all the way through enormous geographical area by using networks based upon broadband and satellite. In short new media have given a huge contribution for society to rapidly gain the information all around the world. Through digital media, massive amounts of digital information can be stored in small spaces such as compact disc and USB drive or flash drive which is a small, portable data storage device that plug into USB port of computer. These unique characteristics of digital media bring efficiency in how the information spreads all around the world. Therefore new media have brought broad impact in our society particularly in term of broadcasting information around the world simultaneously.

New media rely on digital technologies, allowing for previously separate media to converge. Media convergence is defined as a phenomenon of new media and this can be explained as a digital media. The idea of 'new media' captures both the development of unique forms of digital media, and the remaking of more traditional media forms to adopt and adapt to the new media technologies. Convergence captures development futures from old media to new media. Barr (2000:22-8, in Flew 2000) divides convergence in three levels. The first level is functional convergence, which is according to Miles (1997, in Flew 2000:18) as information and media content is increasingly processed through computer-based information technology systems and carried to its end-users across broadband telecommunications networks. According to Flew, functional convergence occurs when technological solutions to a variety of different technical problems end up using the same technological process to solve what were very different problems. For example, collecting news is one problem. Disseminating news is another. Up until the 1970's, news was collected by reporters using a very different series of technologies to those used to disseminate these. Since 1970's, information and media content is being processed through computer based it systems and carried to end users through broadband telecommunication networks.

The second level of convergence is industry convergence, which involves a series of takeovers, mergers, and strategic alliances that strengthened linkages between the computing and IT industries, telecommunications companies, and the media sector (Flew, 2002:19). This is for instance Microsoft and Nine Network to create NineMSN, Yahoo and Channel 7 become Yahoo7, or the Telstra and Foxtel Linkup in Australia. Many media businesses are now becoming part of global entertainment oligopoly. The formation of alliances as a product of convergence has meant that many former great media companies have now been subsumed into larger entertainment conglomerates. For instance Disney/ABC, Viacom/CBS, NBC/Universal, Time Warner and News Corporation are four huge corporations, which dominate the world's publishing and entertainment business right now. Takeovers, mergers and strategic alliance have reinforced the power of media conglomerates to broaden their empire. In this logic industry convergence in the media occurs when technology developing to earn more money.

The third level is convergence products and services which are forms of media and information content that take advantage of a networked broadband infrastructure, the capabilities provided by digitization, and the scope for interactivity and user customization of service ((Flew, 2002:20). This is for instance products and services provided by telecommunications and information services companies such as Telstra and Optus in Australia. These companies not only provide mobile telecommunication services but also broadband access and content, and or carriage service providers and ISPs. Convergent products and services are increasingly being directed to consumers during the 2000s, such as the capacity to access e-mail and other Internet services through Short Message Service (SMS) – enabled mobile telephones, networked games consoles such as Sony's Playstation 2 and Microsoft's X-box, or through digital television.

Three levels of convergence are significant because they affect media as a powerful source to distribute information – e.g. idea/ideology/certain discourse – with certain agenda rapidly and simultaneously around the world. Flew (2002) states that as a result of media convergence and or the evolution of new media technologies, globalisation occurs. In the most general sense globalisation refers to the growing interconnectedness of different parts of the world, which give rise to complex forms of interaction and interdependency. (Thompson, 1995:149). This means that space and time is no longer forming a boundary among people around the world to share and exchange information. Globalisation thus shortens the distance between people all over the world by the electronic communication.

New media radically break the connection between physical place and social place, making physical location much less significant for our social relationship. As Webster (1999:320) puts it
Courtesy of immediate and effective information processing and exchange, economics has become truly global, and with this has come about a reduction in the constraints of space. Companies can now develop global strategies for production, storage, and distribution of goods and services; financial interests operate continuously, respond immediately, and traverse the globe. The boundaries erected by geographical location are being pushed further and further back.
News used to be collected by using different kind of technologies such as camera and film. It then would be disseminated using other different technologies such as newspapers, radio, and television. It took days to publish the information around the world. Today, however what happened on the other side of the world will be broadcasted and circulated around the world in count of second through the convergence of digital media, e.g. 9/11 attacks – 2001, Indian Ocean Tsunami – 2004, and The 2006 FIFA World Cup. News collected and then distributed through the convergence of computer-based technological system and broadband telecommunication networks, satellite, or microwave transmission systems. Since all this process of colleting and disseminating information can be solved through one source called networks, we now see the other side of the world not as far as we thought from our home. Communication seems easier by using the same language called globalisation.

What globalisation should mean was that the boundaries of nation states were eroding, that people were gaining the freedom to mingle freely and adopt a multinational/multi-ethnic/international sense of the self. When we all could cut and paste an identity for ourselves that drew from the best that cultures of the world have to offer us. Globalisation should mean when everyone could draw from the distinctiveness of the cultures around them and create their own unique blend of what it meant to be human. When we could take in the cuisine of Asia and the Middle East mix with this the spiritual outlook of the Dali Lama. (Darrell, 2005:56). However, rather than having this cosmopolitan mix, globalisation has been referred to as the McDonaldisation of the world. This perspective sees what is lost when Mcfries – represents American culture – replace croissant or any other given cultures of the world. It looks at the amazing cultural diversity that capitalism demands began to take over. As Ritzer (1993:1) puts it McDonaldization,...is the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as of the rest of the world.

According to Thompson (1995: 161) The development of new technologies has played an important role in the globalisation of communication in the late twentieth century, both in conjunction with the activities of communication conglomerates and independently of them. The spread of American media including TV, film and American music artists, has been the main component of what we called Americanization of other countries. American TV shows are broadcast around the world. Many of the shows are broadcast through American broadcasters and their subsidiaries such as HBO Asia, CNBC Europe, Fox Channel and CNN International. All of what is known as the 'big four' American broadcasters have international distributors, for example HBO broadcasts to over 20 countries. Many of these distributors broadcast mainly American programming on their TV channel. American films are also extremely popular globally. Many of the world's biggest computer companies are also American, such as Microsoft, Apple Inc., Dell, and IBM. Much of the software used world wide is created by American based companies. The two largest personal computer companies, Dell and Hewlett Packard, which maintain over 30% of the market, are American based. In this perspective it seems that globalisation, as we know it in the twentieth century, can also be thought of as the result of culture imperialism.

The central proposition of cultural imperialism is that certain dominant cultures threaten to overwhelm more vulnerable ones, for example America over Europe and Asia, and Western domination over the rest of the world. This is for instance The United States (and other 'western' countries) still dominates cultural production and the direction of media and cultural flows. Consider the way that United States news, imagery and products continue to dominate the world. In The Propaganda Model, Edward S. Herman tries to explain why the mainstream US media perform as they do using a propaganda model. He claims that the propaganda model is a model of media behaviour and performance with variable effects. As he puts it:
The [propaganda] model does suggest that the mainstream media, as elite institutions, commonly frame news and allow debate only within the parameters of elite perspectives and that wen the elite is really concerned and unified and/or when ordinary citizens are not aware of their own stake in an issue or are immobilised by effective propaganda, the media will serve elite interests uncompromisingly. (Herman, 2002:103).

Herman (2002:102) explains how the propaganda model generally works by stating that:
Its crucial structural factors derive from the fact that the dominant media are firmly embedded in the market system. They are profit seeking business, owned by very wealthy people (or other companies); and they are funded largely by advertisers who are profit-seeking entities, and who want their advertisements to appear in a supportive selling environment.
It is not the major media institution of this century – press, radio, television – have manipulated or dictated to audiences what they must think, rather, they have influenced what they can think about. As Barr (2000:162) puts it media and communication institutions are central players in influencing and legitimising individual and national identity. What we choose to see as critical issues in society depends in part on how the media constructs its agendas of discourse. Information that spreads globally around the world is more likely created and controlled by the owners of media institutions and or media conglomerates with their specific agenda. From this perspective rather than being neutral, professional, objective, and restrained, media institutions exist to express one single voice to controls the whole industry as well as to make profit.

In conclusion, it appears that the relationship between media convergence and globalisation have explained what theorists mean by 'the second media age' or what we call as new media. It occurred that media convergence is defined as a phenomenon of new media, and that globalisation occurs as a result of the three levels of media convergence. Through the intersection between media convergence and globalisation seem that the new media emerging has been explained clearly using the propaganda model, therefore the need for new sociological concept and analytic tool is unnecessary.

THE RACIALISATION OF CRIME AND CULTURAL PANICS

What are the key issues that emerge from the yoking of crime to ethnicity, and the consequent criminalisation of specific ethnic minorities? Discuss in the context of Collins et al's essay and Of middle Eastern Appearance.

The way we can differentiate between the categorised of ethnic and racial is that ethnic refers to your country of origin e.g. Greek Australian, Italian Australian, Sri Lankan Australian, and so on. Racial is the bureaucratic ways in which we are still classified along racial hierarchy and grouping e.g. we might be identified as Caucasian, Black, and Asian. Racialisation here is understood as the ways in which complex social phenomena are explained and assessed mainly in term of ethnic and racial categories of social perception. Therefore Racialisation of crime is always attitudes of racial prejudice and understood in racialised term.

There has been a series of events, which have been subject to much media coverage and public debate in Australia over the last decade, and increasing in the late 1990s about 'ethnic crime gangs', 'race rapes', 'invasion' of asylum seeker or 'boat people', the terrorist attacks 9/11 in the USA, and the Bali Bombing in October 2002. These events have constructed the basis of sequences of fear and moral panic towards Arabic-speaking background and especially those of Muslim faith. Such wave of panic have been deliberately caused and encouraged not only by the mouth of shock-jocks – talkback radio but also from the mouth of opportunist politicians.

Public discourse on ethnic gangs has been very pervasive in all types of Sydney media since late 1998. Television news programs, radio talk back shows and newspapers have been giving the issue of ethnic crime and ethnic gangs repeated headline coverage. Moreover, this coverage has directly linked ethnic crime and ethnic gangs to specific ethnic and regional groupings of immigrants in particular Lebanese and immigrants of Middle Eastern appearance have come in for particular attention.

There are suburbs in Sydney's west that have become identical with "ethnic" crime. Cabramatta is identical with "Vietnamese triads" and Bankstown is identical with "Lebanese gangs". Based on a small number of crimes committed in the Bankstown area in the past six years, including the stabbing death of 14-year-old Edward Lee, the drive-by shoot-up of the Lakemba police station, and the gang-raping of a number of young white women by a group of young Lebanese Australians, the corporate media has run a sensationalist campaign about a "crime wave" in South Western Sydney involving "Lebanese gangs" or "Middle Eastern crime gangs". This essay will discuss the key issues that emerge from the yoking of crime to ethnicity, and the consequent criminalisation of specific ethnic minorities, focusing on Arab – Australian or people from what we might be broadly identified as a "Middle Eastern" ancestry. These two aspects will be discussed in the context of Collins et al’s essay and a short film Of middle Eastern Appearance.

Many researches and data available to date are not of sufficient quality to support the claim that there is a clear positive relationship between crime and ethnicity in Sydney. People in Australian cities like Sydney however still worry so much about criminal gangs, particularly if these gangs are ethnic or racial minorities or the "other". Lebanese crime incidents in Sydney in the early spring of 1998, the gang raping by a group of young Lebanese Australians and The 2005 Cronulla Riots are some of the examples of what media in Australia called "ethnic" crime. As Collin et al (2000:55-56) put it fear of crime among section of the Australian community was transformed into a fear of ethnic crime... the words 'Lebanese', 'Middle Eastern', and 'ethnic gangs' began to be increasingly associated with images of, and worries about, criminality in Sydney.

From the beginning, the crime was casually linked by police and media to ethnicity, the perpetrators were described in racial terms and the image of 'ethnic' gangs was raised by police and media, feeding off each other. Two weeks after the Punchbowl stabbing, gunshots were fired into nearby Lakemba police station. While no-one was injured, there followed a spiralling of press briefings from police spokespeople, comment on talkback radio, statements by parliaments and other public figures, letters to the editor, press editorials. These conditions then led to date of a classic 'moral panic', as defined by Stanley Cohen:
A condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests; its nature is presented in a stylised and stereotypical fashion by the mass media; the moral barricades are manned by editors, bishops, politicians and other right-thinking people; socially accredited experts pronounce their diagnoses and solutions; ways of coping are evolved or resorted to; the condition then disappears, submerges, or deteriorates and becomes more visible. (1973:9 in Poynting, 2002:147).

Again Alan Jones led the 2GB talkback hosts in creating moral panic. In November 2003 Jones pushed the race angle of criminal gang gun violence in his Today Show editorial. Jones argues While this (shooting) is happening in Punchbowl, Greenacres and Bankstowns of Sydney, providentially, we don't hear about them in Perth, or Glenelg, or Bendigo or Wagga or Dalby or Cairns. Which means we have to confront reality. It must have something to do with the people who are living in this area. (Lygo, 2004:134). Moreover, after criticising loudly and angrily against gun violence by youths of "Middle Eastern appearance" Jones argues Well it's quite plain that there are some people who don't want to live by the standards that Australians expect of those who live here. Is this proof of the failure of a multicultural society? (ibid., 135) It is clear that violence is now typically linked to ethnicity by shock jocks that simplify the debate by highlighting ethnicity and religions rather than social and economic factors as the cause of violent actions. Jones concludes his editorial by stating We are multi-racial but monocultural. And if there are some people who can’t live under the Australian cultural umbrella, then we are better off without them (ibid.,135) In other words Jones points out that 'Australian culture' is higher and greater than other cultures by declaring we are better off without people who can't live under the Australian culture umbrella. The commentary like this is now usual in the tabloid media.

The debate of 'ethnic' criminal gangs by the tabloid media tend to focus on nationality or physical appearance of the perpetrators rather than the complex socio-economic factors that lead to criminal behaviour. According to Collin et al (2000:55) The criminal in Sydney had a new police identikit profile. NSW police force uses the ethnic descriptor of Middle Eastern appearance in order to construct its identity-kit profiles. In other words the ethnic descriptor of Middle eastern appearance is a racist construct which assumes that everyone from Middle East looks the same, and automatically identifiable as Middle Eastern. The ethnic descriptor of Middle Eastern appearance is a type of structural contradiction or a paradoxical formulation i.e. I am of Middle Eastern appearance – dark skin, black hair, black beard, wearing of hijab (veil) and so on – and I am not Middle Eastern. (Pugliese, 2003:5).

Pugliese (2003:5) argues that:
Everything in this [ethnic] descriptor is predicted on situating the interpellated subject within a geographical location: this descriptor assumes its animating essence precisely through its naming and invocation of a geopolitical place [i.e. the Middle East]. Yet, this descriptor, when applied to individual bodies, obliterates the specificity of geography as such, as it sweeps up into its biometric grid bodies from across a range of countries that fall outside the geography of the Middle East.

Moreover, Pugliese (2003) states that this ethnic descriptor is an Orientalist construct. According to Said (1978:205) The Oriental is seen as degenerate, primitive or backward, uncivilised, unreliable and sexually rapacious, with an 'aberrant mentality' and a tendency to despotism. Orientals are rarely seen as people, but as problems to be solved or confined – and there is a particular fear of the Oriental male. Furthermore, Said (1978:287) argues that Film images emphasise the Arab Oriental as dishonest and menacing, physically violent and an 'oversexed degenerate'. In other words as an Orientalist construct, ethnic descriptor forms its targets as demonic, unlawful, violent and naturally criminal. The best example of this is how television newscast and cinema keep promoting the notion of evil and dangerous Arab particularly after the airborne attacks in the US 9/11 in 2001 and the Bali bombings in October 2002. The racial stereotype is also portrayed in a short film 'Of Middle Eastern appearance', through the scene where woman in a car suddenly looked panic and locked her car’s door when she saw three Arabian boys passing her car.Arab and 'terrorist' are by now an almost natural adjective/noun grouping. Images and imaginings of the Arab also immediately conjure up other qualifiers – Hezbollah, Hamas, bombings, Muslim fundamentalism, fanaticism, and so on. Not only do these almost natural combinations create the Arab as Other, but locally they immediately pose the Arab Other as a real threat to an authentic Australia. (Fraser, Melhem, Yacoub, 1997:76).
This means Middle Eastern appearance, Arab-ness, and Islam are seen to be the same thing, and are seen to be essentially and pathologically evil, inhuman, violent and criminal. Terror, violence, Islam all pose an immediate and real threat which must be faced and defeated if the real vision of Australia is to be upheld and defended as White English Speaking civilised and Christian.

Collins et al also argue that part of problem with the debate on ethnic crime in Sydney is that the media's use of the terms "Middle Eastern", Lebanese "Ethnic" reinforce myths of ethnic homogeneity. This then promotes a fallacy of composition. That is according to Collins et al (2000:60) if we focus on ethnicity as a factor as if it were a cause of crime, the misdeeds of a minority criminal element of different ethnic communities are attributed to all others who share that cultural background. This means through the use of the "fallacy of composition" it standardize whole ethnic communities as "criminally predisposed". In other words merely because some members of a community commit crime, the entire community is constructed as automatically criminal. As Mukherjee puts it
If an Australian commits a misdemeanour, responsibility for it is attributed to him individually. If a migrant commits a similar misdemeanour it is usually reported in such a way that the fact that he is a migrant, rather than the crime itself, is featured and the responsibility for the offence is thus shared by the whole migrant population. (in Lygo 2004:130)

The use of fallacy of composition indeed affects the whole people who share the same cultural background or are considered having similar religious beliefs and values. For instances the bombing of World Trade Centre was portrayed in the news as an attack against America and its coalition by non-western figures or groups i.e. Al-Qaeda, Palestinians = Terrorists. Thus people, who are considered as Arabs or figures of Middle Eastern appearance will be judged and accused as part of terrorist, then discriminated and treated as criminal. What happened to Mamdouh Habib – and his family – after his release from detention in Egypt and Guantanamo Bay is one of the best examples of the effect of the use of fallacy of composition. According to Osuri (2006: para 2) …since Habib’s return to Australia, governmental attempts to silence him as if he were a terrorist… .

The same treatment happened to the refugees and asylum seekers which invariably described as "Middle-Eastern" when they arriving on Australian territory off the coast of /western Australia, throughout 2000 and up to August 2001. The Australian government refused permission for the ship to enter Australia's territorial waters, insisting on their disembarkment elsewhere. They were disparaged and devalued then claimed without evidence, that many of them 'maybe' associating them with terrorist. The asylum seekers linked to the deepening concern regarding terrorist activity, arising at the same time as the refugee crisis: the Daily Telegraph in its editorial column claimed that, 'While on board, SAS members were able to place under surveillance a suspected agent of the Osama bin Laden terrorist network' (Daily Telegraph 13/10/01:24 in Poynting, Noble, Tabar & Collins, 2004:25). As with the link to terrorism, the accusation that the asylum seekers were bad parents through the infamous 'children overboard affair', only served to strengthen the popular opinion that refugees would not be good and decent Australians. Prime Minister Howard repeated, I don’t want, in Australia, people who would throw their own children into the sea (Four Corners 15/04/02, in Poynting, Noble, Tabar & Collins, 2004:27).

We have seen the emergence in recent years of a highly racialised framing of current events, around crime and terrorism, on a local, national and international level. This framing works to marginalise certain groups because crime images are typically structured through oppositions of us and them, good and bad, victim and villain, right and wrong. These oppositions are then understood in racialised term. An investigation into Lebanese or Middle Eastern crime in Sydney is the same time an investigation into racialisation of crime. That is according to Collin et al (2000:92) attitudes of racial prejudice, directly or indirectly shape practices of individual and institution, including the labour marker and the police. The racialisation of crime functions to construct particular ethnic or racial groups as naturally or inherently criminal. Another term for this is racial profiling.

Racial profiling means that according to your look or how you look, you will be deemed as a suspect, in advance having committed any offences. For example opposition to and suspicion of refugees and so-called illegal have been a dominant theme in racialisation of crime discourse particularly in Australia. As the function of racial profiling is to construct racially targeted subjects as guilty in advance of having committed any criminal offence, thus refugees, asylum seekers, Arab and/or Muslim-Australians are denied within this regime, the right to due legal process. The government even put them – asylum seekers in detention centre merely based on racial profiling assumption – Asylum Seeker, Arab, Muslim are figure of Middle Eastern appearance therefore they are considered as terrorist.

According to Pugliese (2006:7) in the context racial profiling, targeted subjects are represented as figures of fear, suspicion and violence. As a result, they are disenfranchised from exercising the same freedoms and rights as the rest of the citizenry. Of Middle Eastern Appearance depicts racial profiling by the police and the harassment being experienced by Muslim youth in Sydney's West. Simply because the boys were of Middle Eastern appearance and share the same colour hair, skin, and eyes with the real terrorist, they automatically become racially suspect and were treated as criminal. Fadia Abu Karim described furthermore about racial profiling when she was asked the question: 'Do white people have ethnicity'?. According to Fadia Abu Karim:
There seems to be two distinct groups in this country. There is Australian and there is racialize others. If you look at the reporting of crime, you will see when white people suspecting criminal activity, it is reporting that police is looking for a man wearing grey jumper and brown shorts. If the suspect is non-white, he is automatically was said Middle Eastern appearance. That is what you will end up inaccurate and distorted picture. This phenomenon is commonly known as image distortion disorder. People of colour especially men and boys are targeted because of distortion perception of they pose physical threat to white. Stereotype of particular community participate in the continuing of prejudicing policy and actual violence against disempower placing the very body of accusing jeopardy…. The sensitivity around stereotype and distortion largely arises then form the powerlessness of marginalized group to control their own representation. (in Of Middle Eastern Appearance, 2001).

In conclusion, it appears that a series of events over the last decade about 'ethnic crime gangs', 'race rapes', 'invasion' of asylum seeker or 'boat people', the terrorist attacks 9/11, and the Bali Bombing have ignited moral panic about the figure of Middle Eastern appearance and ethnic crime in general. This racialisation of crime and cultural panics have laid behind the response to the events by media personalities. Incidents of 'ethnic crime' have also been irresistible to newspaper, editors, and talkback show producers. In order to understand the complex issue of 'ethnic crime' in Sydney, we need to consider how the social construction of the term 'ethnic' produces a discourse about ethnic crime that often reproduces racist stereotypes rather than challenging them.

THE CULTURAL POLITICS OF SUBURBAN SPACE AND ETHNIC ARCHITECTURE

Is Suburbia a utopian idea? Discuss with reference to Sydney
Historically, race has been a central concept in the formation of the Australian nation. It has operated here as a marker to exclude those who were not considred to eligible to be members of the nation. It has worked as a guarantor of a particularised homogeneity. Homogeineity of language and culture as well as race, was throughout the nineteenth century and up until recently, the most basic concern of the nation. Since 1788, the primary basis of Australian culture has been Anglo-Celtic. Following World War II and through to 2000, almost 5.9 million of the total population settled in Australia as new immigrants, meaning that nearly two out of every seven Australians were born overseas. As a result of post-war migration Australia has become a religiously plural, multicultural society.

When migrants come to Australia, they do not choose to settle in country areas. They want to settle in the areas where they can find work, where they can find support services, where they can find other people who speak the same languages and share the same experiences. Culturally, however migrants were always positioned as the unspoken and invisible other of mostly white aesthetic and cultural discourses. Politically, migrants also were always associated with the common experience of racism and marginalisation in Australia. It thus came to provide the organising category of a new politics of resistance, amongst groups and communities with, in fact, very different histories, traditions and ethnic identities.

Negotiating the insertion of new types of building into existing urban environments is often cause of contestation, as they are usually judged on the degree of their departure from what are considered to be original elements. The architectural interventions of recent immigrant groups are particularly problematic in this case, especially if they have overt cultural content and expression or what is considered as ethnic architecture. As well as the more usual disputes about overlooking, site coverage, they must contend with the privileging of the Anglo-Celtic original – indigenous culture. The architectural impact of non Anglo-Celtic societies and cultures in Australia have thus been mainly considered in terms of how built others or other spaces might not be fitting into surrounding styles and forms or existing environments. This essay will analyse whether suburbia is a utopian idea. Furthermore this essay also will analyse the relation between migrant architecture, hegemonic concept of nation/identity and abjection. These aspects will be discussed in turn in this essay.

According to Theophanous (1995:197) multiculturalism is the belief that Australia is, culturally, a pluralist society, that this should be recognised, and fostered to an extent by various means. Howard may well have been the first person to publicly make the link between multiculturalism and national identity in Australia. In interview during the immigration debate, which he ignited in 1988, he argues that the issue [with multiculturalism] is whether the emphasis is on those things that brings us together as Australian nationals rather than on those things that keep us separate, as overseas-born or Australian-born…[He also considers that] national identity cannot be plural. (Stratton, 1998:106-7). In other words Howard sees national identity as something singular, and unifying in its singularity. Like Howard, Alan Jones the host of 2GB talkback radio show also made a statement, which suggests that national identity as something that has to be singular. In November 2003, Jones concludes his Today Show editorial by stating, We are multi-racial but monocultural. And if there are some people who can’t live under the Australian cultural umbrella, then we are better off without them (Lygo, 2004:135). Jones points out that Australian culture is superior to other cultures by declaring we are better off without people who can’t live under the Australian culture umbrella.

The policy of multiculturalism is organised according to a metaphorical spatial structure in which migrant ethnic cultures are peripheral to a core culture, named these days as Anglo-Celtic, which is privileged. The rhetorical distinction has become pervasive in Australia between migrants, who can be people who have been born in Australia but who are from non-British or Irish backgrounds, and Australians, sometimes identified as real Australians. These are the people whose ancestors, it is implied, settled Australia. The privileging of culture gets played out in surprisingly recent development of the discourse of national identity. In Australia, the concern with national identity, as opposed, for example, to some notion of an Australian type, or way of life.

Plato devised the first idea about ideal place in his Republic (4th c. BC). Long after Plato, however Sir Thomas More was the first to apply the word of Utopia (from Greek ou, 'not' + topos, 'place') to a literary genre when he named his imaginary republic Utopia that is ‘place (where all is) well… (Cuddon, 1998:957). Furthermore, More (2003) suggests a welfare state to explain further about the concept of Utopia that is no private property, free universal education, six hours manual work a day, utility clothes, free medical treatment, meals in civic restaurants (meals accompanied by reading or music) and all religions were to be tolerated. The idea of a place where all is well also a utopian analysis which assumes that social structures and process have developed for the good of all and that these tend to represent the best possible practices. The seeming impossibility of utopia and the many failures to create it has produced its converse: dystopia or anti-utopia. A dystopian analysis assumes that social structures and processes do not automatically function for the good of all or even the majority. Dystopian analysis speculate that these may well function to the disadvantage of many, if not the majority.

The ideal city and the dream house are the key symbols in the grand narrative history of occidental architecture. As utopian spaces, the ideal city and dream house are abstract mathematical production. The history of architecture has established a dialectical relation between this ideal-dream and the real inscriptions on the ground – the real city and the real suburb. These spaces are constituted as maps. At the same time other spaces would be seen to be the spaces in the crevice, in the interstices between architecture, or the space of contradiction and ambiguity.

According to Davison (1994:99):
For over two centuries, Australian dreams of the good life have been shaped by a cluster of interrelated ideas we may loosely describe as the suburban idea. The owner occupied, single-storey house standing in its own garden in suburban area was the standard of domestic comfort to which most Australians have continued to aspire.
In other words the suburb has become so closely identify with popular conception of the good life that any move away from it, is apt to be viewed as an attack upon people’s living standard. In this view, the idea of suburban for some people is seen as utopian space or the ideal place to live.

King (1997:57) argues:
The suburb was instrumental in producing the architectural form of the bungalow, just as the bungalow was instrumental in producing the spatial form of the suburb. It was a process that, in the early twentieth century, was to be repeated in the suburbs of Anglophone colonial and post-colonial countries worldwide: the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
In this view, the bungalow (fig.1) is seen as a form of architecture which suitable for the suburbs whether in North America, Australia or in other countries where English is the main language that is spoken. Moreover King points out that in Australia the developments of bungalow in suburban have gone much further than Britain, and suburban, single family, single-storey homes are the typical pattern. The bungalow is generally regarded as the first truly national type of domestic and suburban architecture. Ironically bungalow, in fact, comes from India, which is a non-Western country.

Australia’s suburbs were shaped, decisively, by the successive waves of immigrants who pioneered them. The demands for land, for space and for independence have always been prominent in the aspiration of immigrants to Australia. Earlwood, like many Sydney suburbs held up as monuments to the story of multiculturalism. This area is densely populated. In June 1995, 43,2% of its 129,235 residents were born in non-English speaking countries… The Greek community is the biggest…19% of the Australian born residents have both parents from overseas, and 53% speak a language other than English at home. (Allon, 1997:4). This fact is making Earlwood one of the most multicultural populations in Australia.

One of the significant features of this area has been the transformation of the traditional bungalow and Federation housing styles (fig.2), which regarded as indigenous or national styles of Australian house. As Allon (1997:3) puts it The experience of post-World War II immigration has resulted in the rise of hybrid housing forms, including one style in particular that has been termed, using a rather awkward neologism, Mediterraneanisation. This means that many of the typical red and dark-purple brick bungalows and Federation houses have been changed with what the hegemonic culture labelled as Mediterranean Palace – that is to signify migrant house. The label is given to migrant house because some of them decorate their gateway with sculptures of eagles or lions (fig.3&4). Some decorate their garden and/or backyard with figures of goddess (fig.5&6) and/or mythical symbols (fig.7&8).

Many housing researchers and practioners argue that the interactions of people with their external social, economic, political and physical environments, in particular their houses and local neighbourhoods are important to construct their sense of belonging and identity of the place where they live. Personal identity according to Casey (2000:406 in Easthope 2004:130) is no longer seen as a matter of sheer self-consciousness but now involves instrinsically an awarness of one’s place, [an awareness that] there is no place without self and no self without place. A sense of place can be seen as part of our cultural interpretation of the world around us. Rose (1995) provides a working definition of a sense of place. In her arguments about the nature of senses of place, she argues that A sense of place is part of the politics of identity…this includes the idea of defining oneself in opposition to an other (Rose, 1995:103-4).

As a multicultural society, we have seen a growth in the opportunities for groups of people to meet and experive the initial recognition of difference in Australian. Once difference has been recognised, groups begin to form boundaries to differentiate themselves from the other and this may lead to an idealisation of the group and a negative stereotyping of the other. Penrose and Jackson (1993) address these issues in their discussion of the connections between place, race and nation.

They say that:
The social construction perspective…. reveals that much of what is deemed to be natural or a matter of common sense deeply rooted in the dominant ideologies of particular societies. [Both race and nation are] empowered by their assumptions of naturalness and by their tendency to be viewed as unproblematic by those whom they privilege…place contextualizes the construction of race and nation, generating geographically specific ideologies of racism and nationalism. (Penrose & Jackson, 1993:202-5).
In this view, people’s sense of place can become heightened when they think that it is being threatened. The ideas of home-place thus have equally been important bases for resistance and liberation.

The creation of places is influenced by physical, economic and social realities. As Gieryn (2000:465 in Easthope, 2004:129) explains with reference to the work of Soja, places are doubly constructed: most are built or in some way physically carved out. They are also interpreted, narrated, perceived, felt, understood, and imagined. It means that the physical environment is an essential part of place, but it is always an interpreted element. A work of architecture cannot be seen as merely material point, Architecture intervenes, maps, and signifies and in doing so it constructs identities. Architecture can also be powerfully symbolic - it can take on a totemic quality. Eagles and lions adorning the gateway to the migrant house, for example, they do not merely function as decoration to adorn the gateway, but they carry certain meanings. They are mythical masculine symbols of war and defence. They adorn the gateways of the migrant house – which perceived as big and labelled Mediterranean Palace by the hegemonic culture – in a masculine gesture to fend off enemy. For migrant the hegemonic culture is seen as the enemy. The hegemonic culture recognises migrant houses by these mythical creatures, which guard the gateways and something the site perimeter of the migrant territory.

The migrant house and the migrant enclave according to Lozanovksa (1994:193)
…play in deconstructing a persistent an mythic, hegemonic culture in Australia… the strong negative reaction often associated with the migrant house can be understood by its similarity to abjection – an unconscious revulsion before our own body and ambiguous but necessary precondition for subjectivity. The addition of symbol and signs on the migrant house are seen as physically distinctive. The lions and eagles are no longer just ornamental objects for the hegemonic culture. They become a sign – or representation for migrant as neither subject nor object. They were transferred from object to abject. In other words the lions and eagles become symbol of abjection because they disturb identity, system and order, rules, boundaries or limit of culture and language. Since they are the sign for the abject, thus they become a sign of cultural resistance to dominant.

As Lozanovksa (1994:197 – 198) puts it:
Whilst for migrant these figures are images of power and force, in transfer into mythic signification they become figures of the marginal. They signify the migrant as non-citizen, as other. At the same time though, what meaning do they impose on their environs; as figures of war and defence they signify the environment as a hostile territory, they make visible mythic territorial divisions. They become figures of resistance.

According to Lozanovksa (1994:201-3) The architecture of the migrant house constructs a reversal of the function of tongue between the host culture and the migrant. The host culture respond to the migrant house: it is an architecture of bad taste… a mild form of oral disgust… Ah yuk! Ah yuk is the response sometimes unspoken, to images of migrant house e.g. Mediterranean palace in Australia. Kristeva suggest that oral disgust – aah yuk – signifies the abject. Kristeva identify oral disgust as the most archaic form of abjection and one would extrapolate that aah yuk as a distinctly non-verbal response signifies that the body has already begun to transgress the boundaries between inside and outside, into the space of self-repugnance: abjection.

For Lozanovksa, The migrant house represents the site of the abject for the unstable subject position of the host culture. The migrant house threatens the homogeneity and hegemony as the site of abjection, the migrant house is the limit to its (unstable cultural) subjectivity. In other words the image of territoriality of the migrant house is particular response in the hegemonic culture because it marks the limit to their consistency and standardisation. The migrant houses terrorize the apparent unity of the host subjectivities with disruption and dissolution. The distinctive styles and forms of migrant houses mark both the point of their recognition of difference and therefore the instability of their host subject position. Thus, from this point of view, it seems that suburbia is a dystopian idea.

The geographer Yi-Fu Tuan coined the term of topophilia to describe the affective bond between people and place...this bond may be stronger for some individuals than for others and can be expressed differently by people form different cultures (Duncan & Duncan, 2001:41). Topophilia is an affective response to place by people who live in that place. This means the places and the spaces influence human memories, feelings and thoughts. For the migrants, a backyard to the site of perimeter contained symbolic statues, ornament or signs of ritual elements embody certain meanings, where memories, history and identity are attached to them. All ornaments in migrant backyard function as topophilia for the migrants.

In conclusion it appears that the architectural of migrant houses in Australia have been mainly considered not appropriate into surrounding styles and forms or existing environment. Migrant houses have challenged with the privileging of the Anglo-Celtic original – indigenous culture with their physical distinctive form. The dissimilarity becomes a sign of abjection and resistance to hegemonic concept of nation/identity. For migrant their garden and backyard decorated with symbolic statues and/or ornament of ritual elements have strong connection with their personal and cultural identity. It is a site of resistance and refuge against assimilation ideologies of the dominant culture.

PUNK - THE MOVEMENT, THE LEGACY

Popular music has always been associated with the alternative, yet the question remains, what exactly is the alternative that is implied here? Has popular music actually helped to foster an alternative way of thinking? If so, how?

Started in continental Europe in the 1910s, Futurism and Dadaism were avant-garde performance movements that sought to capture a modernist critical theory about art and use them to construct new and radical change in oppressive social and political systems. Over the last century, avant garde has come to be associated with any type of art that is anti-traditional or anti-conventional in form. Futurists and Dadaists exemplified the modernist avant-garde: provocative, often outrageous, contemptuous with tradition and respectability, self-promoting through their manifestos and staged public events. Italian Marxist theorist Antonio Gramsci saw [them] as cultural revolutionaries, praising their destruction of rigid traditions and values (Tiddall & Bozzolla, 1993 in Murphy and Potts 2003:46).

While the movement itself failed to make meaningful political progress, it did have significant impact on music and culture. Their alternative values were echoed decades later in punk subculture that express youthful rebellion and rejection of mainstream culture. Their celebration of youth and danger was revived in the Hope I die before I get old (The Who) ethos of punk rock and youth culture. This essay will analyse how punk rock as a genre of music and as an anti-establishment movement may have done to undermine the dominant, hegemonic cultural context when it emerged in the mid-1970s. It will also examine how punk rock becomes the alternative when it is associated with popular music and how popular music actually helps to foster an alternative way of thinking. These issues will be discussed in turn in this essay.

Early punk rockers, like the 60s hippie movement, the Situasionist International, the anarchists, the Beats, Fluxists, Surrealists, Dadaists, Futurists, and any number of disaffected visionaries, represented an age-old spirit of spontaneous defiance toward the established order. What punk rockers and all of them have in common – beside a belligerent attitude toward authority – is willingness to take big risks, and a commitment to pursue small, spontaneous moment of truth. Opportunities to act boldly – which often means not the way you would normally, reflexively act – present themselves everyday and maybe even every hour. Authentic acts tend to get noticed among the correctness on which postmodern culture thrives. Punk as Savage puts it (1991:440) was a total cultural revolt. It was a hardcore confrontation with the black side of history and culture, right-wing imaginary, sexual taboos, a delving into it that had never been done before by any generation in such a thorough way.

The message punk movement was sending out was one of rebellion, individuality, and do it yourself – DIY. In his book Lipstick Traces, American cultural critic Greil Marcus fixes The Sex Pistols Johnny Rotten squarely in the tradition of the rebel seer. Rotten was a gleeful anarchist who used the word FUCK on television and sang like he meant to change the world – or at least explode the dreamy, Beatles – fuelled optimism of the day, and stick a fork into classic rock. It was the Situasionists who first applied that spirit of anarchy to modern media culture. As Lasn (1999:101) puts it They [the Situationists] were interested only in freedom, …The creativity of everyday people, which consumer capitalism and communism had weakened but not killed, desperately needed to find expression. In other words bureaucracies, hierarchies and ideologies have stifled spontaneity and free will. To the Situationists, everyone is a creator of situations, a performance artist, and the performance – of course – is our lives, lived in our own way.

The Sex Pistol and the SI were most definitely on the same page, philosophically. Their song Anarchy in the UK encouraged, in crudely poetic form, the philosophy of the SI movement. As Marcus (1989:13) puts it The Pistols wanted to live not as an object but as a subject of the story.

What emerged became what is now known as punk as the result of social and political climate back in 1970s especially in Britain when it was in recession. Unemployment figures were the worst since World War II, with school leavers least likely to find work. Public spending had risen to 45% of national income and the optimism of the 1960s had faded away. (Punk Music in Britain, BBC.co.uk, 2002) This social and political condition in which they had been growing up resulted in a feeling that was a mixture of frustration, boredom and poorly focused anger. Marcus recalls watching Johnny rotten shouting madly over the band’s guitars in front of the Berlin Wall and understanding that his aim… was to take all the rage, intelligence and strength in his being and then fling them back at the world; to make the world notice; to make the world doubt its most cherished and unexamined beliefs. (Marcus, 1989:7). They were the first to feel nihilism and to rail against a world that offered no future and for a few years their rage shook the world.

The associated punk subculture was not only expressed by youthful rebellion and a variety of anti-authoritarian ideologies, but also through distinctive clothing styles e.g. military boots, Brothel creepers, Dr. Martens boots, tapered jeans, tight leather pants, bondage trousers, fishnet stockings, spike bands, other studded or spiked jewelry, safety pins in clothes or as body piercings, brightly-colored or white and black dress shirts randomly covered in slogans, deliberately offensive word and anarchy symbols, hair was often dyed bright unnatural colours with liberty spike and mohawk or bihawk hairstyles. These fashion were originally an expression of nonconformity with mainstream culture, as well as that of hippie counter-culture. Many female punks rebelled against the stereotypical image of a woman by combining clothes that were delicate or pretty with clothes that were considered masculine, such as combining a Ballet tutu with big, clunky boots.

Distinctive clothing styles of punk subculture was not only representing punk fashion and lifestyle but also representing its message and ideology. Through a change in basic terminology of Saussure concept of signs where the signified becomes the content and the signifier becomes the expression. (Nattiez, 1990:4), we then could analyse the meaning behind punk fashion in relation with its ideology. In other words punk fashion displays many of the things that punk music expresses: aggression, rebellion, and individualism. This use of fashion to shock may also have been partly influenced by the Futurist art movement.

John Holmstrom – Punk Magazine founder in Punk Celebrates 30 Years of Subversion states I felt punk rock had to come along because the rock scene had become so tame that bands like Billy Joel and Simon and Garfunkel were being called rock and roll, when to me and other fans, rock and roll meant this wild and rebellious music. (McLaren, 2006). Punk rock bands avoiding the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. In any event, some of punk rock's leading figures made a show of rejecting not only mainstream rock and the broader culture it was associated with, but their own most celebrated predecessors: No Elvis, Beatles or Rolling Stones in 1977, declared The Clash. (Harris 2004: 202). What makes punk rock bands different from the mainstream 70s rock was they created short, fast, hard music, with political and often nihilistic lyrics. The vocal sometimes sound nasal, and often shouted instead of sung in a conventional sense like what we usually hear in popular music.

According to Holmstrom in Punk Celebrates 30 Years of Subversion – BBC News [punk rock was] rock and roll by people who didn't have very much skills as musicians but still felt the need to express themselves through music. (McLaren, 2006). The music is famous for being based around three or four chords. In the fanzine Sideburns in December 1976, the guitar chords A, E and G were displayed, along with the words This is a chord... this is another... this is a third... Now form a band. (in Punk Music in Britain, BBC.co.uk, 2002). This demonstrates that a large part of the appeal of punk music was its accessibility, the feeling that anyone could have a go. This also challenges the traditional way of thinking that only a truly gifted and skilled person can be an artist or musician and can create major works and become phenomenal.

Because anti-establishment attitudes are such an important part of punk ideologies, punk demystified that their music was the product of small level independent record and distribution. Thus a network of independent music labels, venues, and distributors has developed. The message that anyone can do it was applied. The DIY ethic promotes the ability of the ordinary person to learn to do more than they thought were possible. You just did it yourself. You did not wait for someone to come and discover you. That was the most important thing that came out of punk.

Punk rock movement has inspired many bands on independent record labels that did not fit into the mainstream genres of the time. They applied its spirit and DIY ethics to very different kinds of music and created a new musical genre called alternative rock. Alternative rock consists of various subgenres that have emerged from the independent music scene since the 1980s, such as grunge, Britpop, gothic rock, and indie pop. These subgenres are unified by their collective debt to the style and/or ethos of punk. Punk is musical freedom. It’s saying, doing, and playing what you want. (Kurt Cobain in Azzerad, 2001:205).

However the effect of DYI ethics has been an amazing expansion of local music making. As the result its development has been a cultural version of consumerism. According to Frith (1997:169) This consumerism has led to the creation of an alternative production system that both parallels the established industry (alternative shops sell record made by alternative record companies and featured in the Alternative Charts) and is integrated into it. Independent records, made by do-it-yourself companies, remain commodities. In other words in economic terms punk is basically petit-bourgeois that lies between the workingmen and the capitalists. This makes them betrayed their anti-consumerism ideology. The punk aspiration was to make everyone a star. This could be represented in an untrue way by the process of commercial production, but only if this process was in the wrong hands of multinational corporation.

In conclusion, it appears that punk rock as an anti-establishment rock music genre and movement may have done to undermine the dominant, hegemonic cultural context through their rebellion and belligerent attitude toward authority. The message they wanted people to learn and do was that everyone has ability to create something vital for other people and the world. Their music, fashion and style were a representation of their ideology against the dominant, hegemonic culture planted in our society. They have challenged the traditional notion of making music and how to live ourlives in the world that half full of clubland’s evil empire of commercialism, and the creeping corporate capitalism.

MODERNISM AND POSTMODERNISM

What is the relationship between modernism and postmodernism? Is the distinction between them valid?

The concepts of modernism and postmodernism refer to cultural experience, artistic style or aesthetic forms, and philosophical position. Both terms are used in a variety of context to describe movements in the arts, economic and social conditions, and scholarship. Modernism is a tendency based on the idea that the traditional form of art, literature, social organisation, and daily life had become outdated. Since the traditional forms were believed to be static, monotonous, and believed that they would not improve society and human condition, therefore they needed to be changed or even to be got rid of. For many historians and scholars postmodernism is a movement of ideas arising from, but also critical elements of modernism. This essay will discuss the relationship between modernism and postmodernism. It also will explore the validity of the distinction between them and will be explain in turn in this essay.

Modernism and postmodernism are cultural and epistemological concepts. The relationship between modernism and postmodernism is the concepts of the two concern cultural formations and cultural experience. For example modernism as the cultural experience of modernity and postmodernism as the cultural experience and formation of postmodernity. Both concepts also concern artistic and architectural styles and movements. For instance modernism as a style of architecture (Le Corbusier) or writing (Kafka, Brecht) and postmodernism in film (Blade Runner, Kill Bill, The Matrix 1,2,3), photography (Cindy Sherman) or the novel (E.L. Doctorow, Salman Rusdhie). Finally the concepts of modernism and postmodernism concern a philosophical position that asserts the character of knowledge and truth. Modernism is associated with the enlightenment philosophy of Rousseau, Marx, Weber, and others, whereas postmodernism in philosophy has been associated with thinkers such as Lyotard, Baudrillard, Foucault, and others.

It was the Enlightenment of eighteenth-century Europe that set the ground-work for artistic modernism. “The Enlightenment philosophers believe that through the application of reason they could create a new society unrivalled in its fairness and equality. Progress promised a more just society, liberated from the tyrannies of the past: monarchy, religion, superstition, fixed social hierarchy.” (Murphy & Potts, 2003 : 41). In other words the enlightenment philosophers believe that reason and rationality form the basis for human progress. Reason is the source of progress in knowledge and society that will improve human condition. According to Marx (1995 : 20 in Murphy & Potts 2003 : 41) “the Enlightenment idea of progress was absorbed into the new inflection of technological progress, whose aim was “the continuing improvement of technology’ itself.” It means that better technology would produce a better world.

The central cultural experience of modernism marked not only by change, innovation and dynamism, but also ambiguity, doubt, risk, uncertainty, and fragmentation. These characteristics underpinned by the social and cultural processes of individualisation, urbanisation, rationalisation, commodification, and bureaucratisation. It happened as the result of industrialism, capitalism, surveillance (control of information and social supervision), and military power (control of the means of violence through the industrialisation of war). As industry, technology and communications systems have transformed the human world at a breathless pace, which celebrate technological speed, dynamism, and innovation, so they have also dissolved the beliefs of tradition. Thus cultural modernism is an experience in which, to paraphrase Marx, ‘All that is solid melts into air’, which suggests change, uncertainty and risk. Here, for example, is Berman’s (1982 : 15) description:To be modern is to find ourselves in environment that promises adventure, power, joy, growth, transformation of ourselves and the world – and, at the same time, that threatens to destroy everything we have, everything we know, everything we are. Modern environments and experiences cut across all boundaries of geography and ethnicity, of class and nationality, of religion and ideology; in this sense, modernity can be said to unite all mankind. But it is a paradoxical unity, a unity of disunity; it pours us all into a maelstrom of perpetual disintegration and renewal, of struggle and contradiction, of ambiguity and anguish. To be modern is to be part of universe in which, as Marx said, ‘all that is solid melts into air.’

Many artists at that period of time have responded enthusiastically to these technological and social transformations. The avant-garde movements such The Futurists, The Constructivists, The Dadaists, The Surrealists, and others were group of modernists who represented and emphasised the notion of technological speed, dynamism, innovation, newness, and contemptuous of tradition in their piece of arts. Modernism reject the idea that it is possible to adequately represent the ‘real’ so that representation is not an act of mimesis or copying but an aesthetic expression or conventionalised construction of the ‘real’. It means that modernism emphasised the creativity of individualism, originality and uniqueness of every piece of arts. These are the representation of the ‘real’.

As Jameson puts it

The great modernisms were predicated on the invention of a personal, private style, as unmistakable as your fingerprint, as incomparable as your own body…the modernist aesthetic is in some way organically linked to the conception of a unique self and private identity, a unique personality and individuality, which can be expected to generate its own unique vision of the world and to forge its own unique, unmistakable style. (Foster 1983 : 112).

In contrast postmodernism asserts that originality is no longer possible. All possible styles have been done. Art now consists of creative arrangement of diverse style. As a cultural style postmodernism marked by what according to Jameson one of the most significant features in postmodernism is pastiche. Jameson in Foster (1983 : 115) defines:Pastiche is, like parody, the imitation of a peculiar or unique style, the wearing of a stylistic mask, speech in dead language: but it is a neutral practice of such mimicry, without laughter, without that still latent feeling that there exists something normal compared to which what is being imitated is rather comic. Pastiche is blank parody, parody that has lost its sense of humor: pastiche is to parody what that curious thing, the modern practice of a kind of blank irony.In this sense pastiche is the act of copying a piece of style from somewhere else then mix it with other different styles to recreate and reuse the original one. Pastiche is found in both literary and non-literary works include art and music. Many DJs and musicians often engage in the practice of pastiche. Adagio For Strings by DJ Tiesto for instance is a pastiche of American composer Samuel Barber. The films of Quentin Tarantino are often described as pastiches, as they often imitate pulp novels, blaxploitation (the films were made to attract the urban African American audience) e.g. Pulp Fiction and Chinese Kung Fu films e.g. Kill Bill.

Postmodern culture is also marked by an indication of hyperrealism. Baudrillard (1984 : 2) defines hyperreality as following: “Abstraction today is no longer that of the map, the double, the mirror or the concept. Simulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal.” In other words the world we live in has been replaced by a copy world, where we seek simulated stimuli and nothing more. Our consciousness has lost its ability to distinguish reality from fantasy. We begin to engage with fantacy without understanding what it is doing.What we think as the real world has shifted into the world of the hyperreal. Hyperreality is best illustrated in The Trilogy of Matrix.

Wag The Dog is another example of how the mass media creates hyperreality by showing that the idea of war as a creation of the media.

As Baudrillard (1984 : 3) puts itThe real is produced from miniaturised units, from matrices, memory banks and command models – and with these it can be reproduced an indefinite number of times. It no longer has to be rational, since it is no longer measured against some ideal or negative instance. It is nothing more than operational. In fact, since it is no longer enveloped by an imaginary, it is no longer real at all. It is a hyperreal, the product of an irradiating synthesis of combinatory models in a hyperspace without atmosphere.The development of technology has given the world a massive progression of machines, gadgets, and/or any computer based-technology that we would have never thought decades ago. Such massive development of technology has allowed the world to create another world that seems exist only in a fantasy world. The ‘real’, the originality is no longer real. Reality has been swept aside by simulation, artificial, imitation, that is to say hyperreality.

As a philosophical movement, postmodernism rejects ‘grand-narrative’ (that is, universal explanations of human history and activity) in favour of irony and forms of local knowledge. As Lyotard (1984 : xxiv) puts it “I define post-modern as incredulity toward metanarratives.” Postmodernism rejects the Enlightenment philosophy of universal reason and progress. In postmodernism concept knowledge is not a question of discovering that which already exists, rather it involves the construction of interpretation about the world that are taken to be true. The truth is the consequence of power, that is, of whose interpretations count as truth. Therefore the postmodern condition is said to involve a loss of faith in grand narrative or metanarrative.

In conclusion, it appears that the relationship between modernism and postmodernism is the concepts of the two concern cultural experience, artistic style and a philosophical position that emphasises knowledge and the truth. Modernism as a cultural experience marked by change, innovation and dynamism, ambiguity, doubt, risk, uncertainty, and fragmentation. These characteristics occurred as a result of industrialism, capitalism, surveillance, and military power. Postmodernism as a cultural experience marked by one of the most significant practices in postmodern era, pastiche. Postmodernism also marked by a sign of hyperrealism and the loss of faith in metanarrative or grand-narrative. It seems that there is a valid distinction between modernism and postmodernism, through the exploration of these characteristics that marked both terms of cultural and epistemological concepts.
