The 2011 Bed and Breakfast season is coming to a close in Prince George! Our off season and short term rental rates are now in effect.

A warm thank you to all our wonderful summer guests - it is just amazing who sits down at our table. This year we had guests from The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, UK, Australia, Spain, France, Canada, the US AND for the first time Beijing. Although English can sometimes be an issue it is just amazing what stories are told.

Fall is in full swing and although we have had several frosts the gardens are still looking good. The local colours are beautiful and we realize how lucky we are to live in a place so close to nature and at the same time have our lives so enriched by the wonderful B&B guests that pass through our door.

Growing Cucumbers in a Green House in North Central BC

Living in P:rince George BC growing cucumbers can be a bit hit and miss. This year I did some reading and decided to do an experiment. I planted 2 Sweet Slice Cucumber plants from seed. After transplanting they were placed in my green house and trained to grow up some twine. I read of two different methods of "pruning" - both guaranteed to give greater yields and quality. So the very unscientific Julie decided to do an experiment. One plant with no pruning, one plant with the plant buds pruned out and one that had the buds, flowers and tentacles pruned out until there were seven leaves.

This is a picture taken August 8 of the Sweet Slice Cucumber with no pruning - just let it grow and fertilized regularly. Today there is no sign of any baby cukes

Pruned until 7 leaves appeared

This is a picture taken August 8 of the Sweet Slice cucumber with pruning of the flower, bud and tentacle until there were 7 leaved. We have a few flowers but not much in the way of fruit developing.

Just the leaf buds were pruned

This is the cucumber that had all the leaf buds pruned out. We have already eaten one large very tasty cucumber and as you can see there are many more! Now we have to admit that July was really lacking in heat and sunshine and that many have been a factor but it looks like I have found the pruning method that work best for Sweet Slice in my greenhouse.

One of our most popular breakfasts at Arbor B&B in Prince George is our "Dutch Baby Pancakes". This morning we had guests from Reunion Island ( a beautiful place in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar). The Dutch Baby Pancakes were a hit with seasonal strawberries, blueberries, orange zest and a topping of icing sugar. The strange thing is none of our gusts from Holland have ever heard of "Dutch Baby Pancakes" prepared this way so we are a bit unsure where the name came from! Many of our guests have requested the recipe so I have included it below:

Dutch Baby Pancakes ( per person)

preheat the oven to 475F
preheat individual casserole dishes ( approximately 6" in diameter)
Spray with non-stick oil
for each pancake put in a blender 1 egg, 1/4c flour, 1/4c milk and a pinch of salt - blend well on high
Pour into the preheated casserole and cook 12 minutes ( they will rise up and brown)
Turn out onto warm plates and fill with fruit in season. Top with orange zest and a sprinkle of icing sugar
This breakfast can be served as is for our "meatless" guests or accompanied with bacon
For the Canadian touch I suggest a drizzle of maple syrup.

Pidherny Bike Trails Prince George BC

Bikers, hikers, trail riders , naturalists and other outdoor enthusiasts who don't know about Pidherny Trails in the North Nechako Bench of Prince George ( right next to Arbor Bed and Breakfast) have a great experience waiting. This 650 ha. area has been used year round for about 50 years. It became an official established recreational site on Crown land two years ago.

The International Mountain Biking Association is helping to give the trails the same standard as found in Whistler as to width and rating the difficulty with international signage of a green circle, blue square and black diamond.

Development of the trails locally is by the Prince George Cycling Club. For a map of the trails click on the map.

World Baseball Challenge Prince George, BC July 8 - 17

The 2011 World Baseball challenge set for July 8 - July 17 offers world level excitement at Citizen field in Prince George. The opening game at 7 pm July 8 comes with the Sound Addiction good time rock and roll band starting the activities at 6pm.

Each day three world-level games will be played: at noon, 3pm, and 7pm .. the semi-final games will be at 3pm and 7pm July 16 followed by the final game at 3pm July 17.

Prime seating tickets behind home plate at $199 while open seating tickets are $149 for the week and are available at Ticketmaster .

Dominion Day at the Huble Homestead

Arbor Bed and Breakfast just had guest leave from Cambridge England this morning. They are ardent bird watchers and extremely well travelled. Yesterday they headed up Highway 97 from prince George to visit a destination they had researched on the internet - it was the Huble Homestead which is located 40 kilometers north of Prince George, BC on Highway 97.

They were absolutely entralled with the restorations and particularly commented that the bonus is it was authentic and not "overdone". They also appreciated that the Homestead was staffed with volunteers. This is one of the many interesting daytrips close to Prince George and is included in the Golden Raven Tour.

On Dominion Day ( July 1) there are special celebrations at the Huble Homestead from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We always have very interesting guests at Arbor B&B in Prince George! I have been in the fabric /sewing/quilting business since the late 1980's and have been a sewer for almost - good grief - 50 years ( I started young). In the last two weeks we have had ardent sewers/quilters from all over the world! Lindy from Queensland who we had last night has exactly the same sewing/embroidery machine that I do - the Husqvarna Viking SE. Ramona from Vernon who has been with us all week has a Husqvarna Viking Designer One USB and has trained as a Sulky Educator. Gayle from Ricmond is a member of the Richmond Quilters Guild and loves traditional Quilting. Anne from Red Deer Quilts all her Quilts by hand. So Often I wonder how people end up in our B&B - how did they know I have a life long love of fabrics ( and a very serious habit). The answer is I need to create a new page on our Bed and Breakfast Website about my love of sewing and projects I have done. Ohhh for the time.

Attached is a small collage quilt done through a course at Quilt University called Flower Power . the collage was just a quick exercise in working from a photo and I really liked it.

The BC Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers Guild has just published their new brochure. This is a very professional booklets with all the members of the Guild in BC. The new excitement is the inclusion of QR Codes both for the whole brochure and each individual region.

A friend and I went out for our annual Pre-Christmas lunch and this year chose Hummus Brothers Tapas Bar. This new eatery , that opened in the Spring of 2010, is very Vancouver both in decor and cuisine and is located on 4th Ave. just down from J.J. Springers.

My friend chose the "Daily Soup" that was a creamed roasted pepper with mascarpone cheese and a vegetarian panini - both the presentation and food quality was first rate. I was trying to eat within my Weight Watchers plan and was pleased with the grilled shrimp salad with dressing on the side.

The big bonus was although the restaurant was busy it was not noisy and we were able to have a great visit.

This will definitely be a place that I will suggest to our guests at Arbor Bed and Breakfast !

Pidherny Trails gain Official Recreational Status

The Pidherny Trail system has been granted official recreational status. This extensive trail system (650 hectare) is adjacent to our Bed and Breakfast in Prince George BC. We have used the trails for the last 13 years for walking, skiing, snowshoeing and dog walking BUT the main use is for mountain biking.

The Prince George Cycling Club has an extensive trail map on their website. The area’s protected status is a result of the joint co-operation of the City of Prince George; the Prince George Cycling Club (PGCC); the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts; Ministry of Transport; Ministry of Forests, Ministry of Environment, First Nations; and the woodlot owner. Pidherny became popular two decades ago after the Nechako Ridge Trail Society started building trails there and the PGCC took on the project about four years ago.

Prince George has been selected as the site of the Northern Regional Pond Hockey Championships and the second location in the BC Provincial Pond Hockey series! Players will lace up the skates for the inaugural launch of what will become an annual event in PG’s winter sporting line-up on January 14-16, 2011!

We loved the quiet, cosy atmosphere of Julie's Arbor B&B. We had a lovely evening munching on her wonderful cookies and watching movies she had provided, while staying warm by the gas fireplace. It felt like being at home but more special! We enjoyed a lovely breakfast and good conversation and went off to our day satisfied. Thanks Julie! -
