Nail Dilemma: I'm in a Wedding on Saturday

I'm in a wedding this weekend. It's in Mississippi... I'll let that sink in for a minute.

Anyway, I'm the maid of honor. I have been stru-guh-ling with trying to decide which nail color I should rock. I need to figure out colors for both toes AND feet.

I only have one requirement:

I have to look fly.

Easy enough, right?

So this is the dress, I'm wearing...

Cute, right?

I'm wearing a black satin peep toe shoe...I tried to find a pic but couldn't.

It's an evening wedding.

If you've been reading my blog, you know that I love making a statement with my nails. Please help me pick a color.

I'm Doing the 50 Book Pledge!

So one of my New Year's resolutions is to read more. In fact, a couple of days ago, I finished my first book of the year, Midnight by Sister Souljah (review coming this week).

I happened to be on Twitter one afternoon and saw a tweet from a fellow blogger, Mandee from BooksandBlingdotcom, that mentioned a 50 Book Pledge created by The Savvy Reader. It seemed like it was right up my alley so I went to their website to find the deets:

We officially took the #50BookPledge for the first time last year, vowing to make reading a priority in 2011. Here, Cory explains why. Basically, we pledged to read 50 books in 2011, or roughly a book a week. Now, 50 really was just a random number. The real reason we wanted to take the pledge was to track our reading progress over a year, and really make an effort to make reading a bigger part of our lives.

I have decided to make the pledge.

So each week or so, I will post a review of the last book that I read starting with "Midnight" which I will post in the next couple of days. You will also be able to find a page listing the books that I have read throughout the year at the top of my blog ^ up there.

I would absolutely love it if you, my fab readers, would join the pledge and we can share favorite books and recommendations. I am also going to have my kids take the pledge with me. Let's make it a family affair.

A Busy Year for My Son

I was just reflecting on 2011 for my 3 year old son, BJ. Man, a lot went down with him. But there were two major things:

1. We found out that he is allergic to pretty much EVERYTHING outside.

I knew BJ had allergies since he was an infant because he was always and I mean always congested. But because he was so small, the pediatrician was hesitant to have him tested. Well, in May of last year, I just couldn't bear to continue to see him suffer through ear infections, pink eye, infinite congestion and fevers anymore. So I bucked the system and took him to an allergist (so pleased with them, by the way). They could see right away that he was completely miserable. He was diagnosed with a sinus infection and the doctor said that he needed to be tested for allergies. After a variety of prescriptions they sent us on our way to return in a few weeks for a skin test... Ouch.

When we came back for the skin test visit, BJ was all happy go lucky because he actually likes going to the doctor....First they applied something to numb his arm and then wrapped it in saran wrap to really make it numb...

As we waited for the numbing to take effect, they tried to distract him with toys...which worked.

But then...OUCH!!!

And more OUCH!...

Yeah, he was not happy about that AT ALL.

As you can see from all of the raised bumps and red marks, he has quite a few allergies. Turns out he's allergic to:

Trees (yes, we had to get a fake Christmas tree this year)
Grass
Ragweed
Mold
Dustmites
Dogs
Cats

Yeah, pretty much everything outside....and any pet, his sister has ever wanted LOL.

So now BJ takes medication everyday for his allergies- an oral med and Nasonex (and some other stuff, as needed). I'm not really happy about the meds everyday but he feels SO MUCH better. So I'll deal with it.

2. We found out that he needs glasses (yep, at 3 years old).

This past year, shortly after we found out he had allergies, I noticed that BJ started squinting when he was watching television- red flag #1. I thought it was strange but also remembered that a side effect of his new allergy medication was blurry vision so I blamed it on that. When it didn't go away, I called the allergist to ask about this side effect, he did not feel it was the medication so I made an appointment for him to see one of the ~~best~~ most popular pediatric eye doctors in Atlanta. This doctor assured us that he did not need glasses yet but to come back in six months. I believed him because he was supposedly one of the "best"- hmmmmm.

Well when school started, BJ's teacher told me that he was squinting when they would do flashcards and other activities- second red flag. This time, I did my own due diligence and found another popular pediatric eye doctor in Atlanta who really is the BEST. At this doctor's visit, QT and I found out that BJ is extremely farsighted and has really bad astigmatism. The doctor said that he felt it was necessary to prescribe glasses for BJ because he did not want his vision to hinder him from being the phenomenal little kid that he is on his way to being (yeah, he made a big impression on everyone in that office). So now BJ is rocking his glasses with no problem. I don't have to fight him about wearing them as I thought I would (although the doctor assured me that he would love them). And more importantly, he can SEE. No more squinting....plus he looks so cute in them.

Moral of both of these stories: As a mom, you know what's going on with your child. Don't ignore your gut. And if you're not sure about the first opinion, get a second.

Although I did not want him to have any allergies and really didn't want him to have to wear glasses, I am relieved that we are finally aware of these issues and that they can be corrected. Definitely a stress reliever.

Polish Change: 10 in Always and Forever (Yay, pink!)

Yesterday, I ran into CVS to pick up a spray bottle for my hair. Of course, I had to check out the polish to see if they had any on sale. To my surprise and delight, they had 10 polish on sale! I picked up a few of these polish at CVS before but never actually bought any (thought they were overpriced). Well, guess what? They had two really pretty colors on sale for 75% off!- a pink and a purple! Of course, I snatched them up!

I decided to try the pink first because I couldn't even remember the last time I rocked pink on my nails. Plus it's called "Always and Forever"- I love that song.

I must admit- I was impressed. The application was so easy I was literally caught off guard. Beyond just a little bit of streaking (which for 75% off I could deal with), it only took two coats to satisfy me! This is really a pretty pink and oh so girly. The real surprise was that it is not as demure as Revlon in Cotton Candy but a bit more edgy. This is pink that wants to be seen which you can't really tell by the bottle. Check out my pics:

My Work Day Turned Out To Be Margaritas for Lunch

I was scheduled to go back to work today. As I'm driving in this morning, there was literally NO ONE on the road but me. When I got to work to see the parking lot look like this:

I was convinced that we were the only people in Atlanta going into the office today.

But when I got there, someone was already there so I guess I didn't have the wrong day. But I did ask her, why we were at work when everyone else was clearly still in bed. LOL.

When my boss arrived, she realized that today was, in fact, the holiday and told us to go home. My boss, a co-worker and I decided to go have lunch at Uncle Julio's on Peachtree. And we each had a celebratory margarita for 2012. Peep the polish (you know I try to keep them fly too):

Cute, right? My co worker (middle) is actually rocking Rimmel London in Steel Gray which I bought her for Christmas teeheehee. I love it when a plan comes together...Besos, P&P.

New Blog Direction for 2012

I had a chance to think long and hard about my blog over the holiday. Over the short 7ish months that I've been writing this blog, there were many times when I felt stifled by the topic. Don't get me wrong, as you can tell I really do love my Pearls and Polish but to be limited with only posting on those subjects was ~~torture~~ really weighing on me. I am not a nail artista nor do I want to be. I like nice colors on my nails and fly jewelry on my neck, wrist, etc. but my life is so much more than that. After all, just like my tag line says, I am a professional, "busy mom" and wife with a lot going on- like many of you. So although I will continue to make many posts along the lines of the blog title, there will also be other posts about my life, thoughts and family. I also happen to love NBA basketball (I'm seriously like a fiend, you guys) and I have a lot to say about that too, especially on Twitter (follow me!). I hope that you will continue to read, follow and share. Either way, I wish you a happy and fulfilling 2012, perlas!...Besos, P&P.

Black Tie Nails

A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to attend the Mayor's Masked Ball by a client. The black tie event was held at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta. This is an annual event to benefit the United Negro College Fund hosted by the Mayor of the City of Atlanta that began with the Honorable Andrew Young. Supposedly all of the who's who of Atlanta was in the house.

The weirdest part of the night, in my opinion, was the entertainment. Guess who it was? Seriously, you will never guess. Now you know that Atlanta is like a mecca for entertainment, right. Well, the featured artist was...Keith Sweat...-_-.....yeah I don't even feel like commenting on that because that was just plain ridiculous to me. So just chuckle amongst yourselves.

Anyway, of course I wore black. A long black dress that I found at Dillards at the VERY last minute- tres sexy. I also found some really hot shoes at DSW at the last minute as well (which Im excited about because I can also wear them to a January wedding that I'm in). Check out the pic.

The crazy thing is that I didn't take one picture at the event. Although I did tweet like crazy for as long as I could before my phone died.

More importantly, I was rocking the cu-utest sparkly red polish- Color Club in Santa's Cinnamon. Not only was it extra spicy but it also smelled like cinnamon!!! Now I have never been a red chick but this polish is hot. What do you think?

A definite keeper that I will wear again. I can't think of any other red that I would say that about...I may rock this again on NYE- haven't decided yet.

This was actually my first time using Color Club which I found at the Sally's in Morrow, GA (by Southlake). The funny thing was after leaving Sally's I went to Ross where I found a whole collection of Color Club polish which of course I bought. So more Color Club reviews coming soon...Besos, P&P.

Polish Change: Rimmel London in Steel Gray

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving. Mine went well other than that my computer decided that it would no longer power up (insert expletives). It is for that reason that my blogging has been limited (although you can always find me on Twitter). And yeah, that issue has not yet been resolved but I don't want to talk about that right now.

Anyway, so over the Thanksgiving holiday, I found myself at Target (although it certainly doesn't take a holiday to find me there). I am never overly impressed with their selection (at least not at the location closest to my house). I was actually looking for Essie in Very Structured because I thought that would be the perfect Thanksgiving color. Never found it. But I did stumble upon a brand that I had not tried before- Rimmel London. I really like grey colors so I picked it up in "Steel Grey."

The brush was a bit awkward (kind of like the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure brush which I can't stand) but oddly enough the application was not bad at all. The first coat was pretty thin so I added another. These are pics with two (yes, only two) coats. Check it out:

So even though its called "Steel Grey," it really has a purplish tint to it. I really like it though. It seems to go perfectly with my mood today- laid back (but still fly). A great color when you want to say something...but not too much.

This color reminds me a lot of Confetti in Moonstruck. I know some of my readers could never find that color. This is a good alternative.

And oh yeah, this polish is supposed to last up to 10 days....I'm skeptical but then again we'll never know because the same color will never last that long on my hands- chippy or not (maybe I should try on my feet).

Do HS Basketball Players Wear Polish?

We have a new addition to the P&P household. My 14 year old step-daughter is now living with us. Yep, I now have a teenager in the home. Ready or not, LOL. She is an avid basketball player. And pretty good, I might add. In fact, she just made the Varsity basketball team as a freshman. Awesome, right?

Aaliyah- Rest In Peace

So let's talk a little about style. On one hand, my ten year old daughter, Summer, is a great mix when it comes to style. Not too girly but not too boyish either. And she is so serious about what she wears. When she's a teenager, I could so see her style mimicking that of Aaliyah's (RIP) or Ciara's (before she became a bit too raunchy). Summer also loves nail polish. Check out some of her summer colors here and here. (We also have a three year old son who definitely ain't wearing polish- no matter what J. Crew says.)

My stepdaughter, on the other hand, well, I really can't call her style.
QT would say that she really doesn't have any (which may drive him crazy because he is so very stylish lol). She pretty much wears jeans and t-shirts every day but not with any pizazz or flavor. She thinks I'm too girly lol so I try not to overwhelm her with my recommendations. I'm thinking that I may start small by offering to do her nails weekly. I don't know how basketball players feel about polish. But I think it would be fly on the court. That could be almost like her trademark lol.

It's Back: Summer's (Summer) Nails

I started doing my daughter's nails again. Yesterday, Summer and I went to a beauty supply store to look for polish because I'm pretty bored of the selection in drug stores. We decided to purchase a few from a brand called "Ruby Kisses" because they had some really cute colors and they were only 99 cents. Summer chose two colors: a pinky purple and a blue called "Blues Clue" (no lawsuit here- LOL).

She decided to start off with "Blues Clue." It turned out to be really fly. Check out the pics:

Cute, right? But peep the fly watch that she wanted to make sure was in the pic!

I really like the color. Hopefully, the powers that be at her school won't have anything to say about it. She already has a really strict uniform so I think this is one way that she can express herself.

Oh, the watch is a "Baby G" which she got this year for her 10th birthday (can you tell we love watches in the P&P household?). She's definitely a trend setter in the fifth grade LOL! Not to mention so smart!

Can Clorox Bleach Away My Pain?

Spending time with friends and family can lead to fun and memorable moments, but also some very messy ones. Tell us about the messiest moments that you’ll always remember!

I am still trying to figure out a way to get the polish out of my new WHITE bedspread (back story here). Somebody recommended Clorox. Duh! I think I was so pissed at the time (an understatement) that I didn't even think through how to get the stains out (and there are many).

I mean obviously bleach would be the first try. Unfortunately, I immediately threw the bed spread in the washing machine with just my regular detergent... Yeah, it basically did NOTHING. See!

And oh, here are the remnants (yeah, most are EMPTY) of the bottles that were used to ~~decorate~~ destroy my bedspread by my three year old... And blue is my fav color- *tears drop on my computer keyboard*

Wrist Candy

I am always on the hunt for different types of pearl jewelry. I must admit that I have so much of the expected that I was getting a bit bored of pearls (horrors, I know). That has really been the reason that my pearl posts have been few and far between.

I came across these two bracelets which have re-ignited my spark for pearls.

This is a bracelet made from rare freshwater Keishi pearls. Keep in mind, perlas, that you don't always have to stick to the usual round or semi round pearls. Different- I like.

I love this next bracelet. These are AAA freshwater pearls that range in size from 3mm- 9mm. I actually have a faux version of it that also includes gold beads- dope. So feminine but with a little sass. (You all should know by now that I'm all about that.)

Perfect Christmas Green

So I'm a little over a month early but at least I know what color I will be rocking for Christmas. Confetti in My Favorite Martian is a fab sparkly green that is perfect for the upcoming holiday season. (But as my daughter was quick to tell me, its not for Thanksgiving. She thinks I need to wear something in the brown-red family for Turkey Day. Ok, Summer. LOL.)

This really is a gorgeous green with flecks of gold. And not too much sparkle, just enough for you to look at your hands and say "ooh la la."

I must admit that I was afraid after I put on the first coat because it was very (I mean EXTREMELY) sheer. I wasn't satisfied until I got to the third coat- then of course I did another (you know how I do). What do you think?

I love it. This is one of my new favs. Confetti has some nice colors and its only $1.99 at that drug store with three letters- grrrrrr (post coming soon about my issues with that place that I refuse to name). Here's another color you may like from Confetti....Besos, P&P.

Woeful Wednesday: R.I.P Heavy D

My heart is so heavy. Every birthday I sing "Happy birth- ba-diddly, diddly, diddly, dee" like you used to on 98.7 Kiss back in the day. I was so excited when you were on the BET Awards just a few weeks ago. Without you, there is no Biggie, no Rick Ross. You are who every big guy is compared to when they can move ;-). My ten year old daughter heard some of your music this morning. She loved the "you're a chicken McNugget and I'm a Big Mac" line. She also said that she likes hip hop from our generation much better than current rap music. She said that she can actually say the words (no profanity)... It's so ironic that your last tweet was "Be Inspired." After all, you inspired so many. I and your other countless fans will continue to "be inspired" and inspire others in your memory...Anyway, just thought you should know. Rest In Peace, Heavy D. Yeah, so its more blue. I'm obsessed I tell you.

This weekend, I actually had my nails professionally done. I got some much needed cuticle love. My QT's birthday was on Saturday so I had to be extra fly.

I don't have much China Glaze in my collection but I know many people swear by it. I like this blue- it's cute...but I don't LOVE it.

I'm really on the hunt for some FLY navy blues for Fall. Any recos??...Besos, P&P.

Preliminary Disclaimer: This post is not about "Pearls" or "Polish." I've got other stuff on my mind this morning.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have suffered from a dry and itchy scalp like forever. I swear I have tried every freakin product from prescription to Nizoral to Head and Shoulders and yeah even that BS T-Gel. Nothing has really worked....Anyway, so I always bring my own shampoo to the salon. I decided to try something new since nothing really worked anyway. This is what I picked up at...Actually I'm not going to tell you where I got it just because I'm disgusted with their stores in inner city areas. So you won't hear any more plugs from me. But you can find this at any drug store chain. Check it out!

Holy SNAP! Now I don't know who Dr. Miracle is. Quite frankly, I kinda looked down on this line because I thought it was a load of crap. But this stuff actually WORKS! My scalp is so clean and stays clean! Even my hair stylist and the shampoo ladies said they were going to recommend this for other clients. And it tingles- I love the tingly feeling. It's a shampoo and conditioner so its not as drying as some of the other shampoos. And it's great on natural hair- as mine is. And NO TANGLES... AND (to make this even better), my three year old son has been complaining about an itchy scalp. There was never anything actually on his scalp but he was always scratching. I bought Milani in Lemongello mostly because it reminded me of a joke from back in the day. You know the joke where the woman named her twins after lemon and orange Jell-0? Am I the only one who heard that?

Sun warms the color up significantly.

Man, I keep trying. But I still continue to struggle with yellow.

I really don't like this color. It's a one and done for me. I'm taking it off the same day that I put it on. This color reminds me of I promise I really do like yellow but a little better quality (not much though)....Don't get me wrong, I do like Milani though.

If you are looking for a yellow, Orly in Spark is a good option...Besos, P&P.
