Furthermore, a semiconductor capable of emitting blue or blue-violet light would need to be manufactured from elements at the high end of the periodic table. This was a major challenge. Elements at the high end of the periodic table are difficult to crystallize because of their strong bonding characteristics.

Sony's development efforts started with the raw materials. It began to explore the characteristics of the various elements, using a trial-and-error approach. In July 1993, it created the world's first ZnSe semiconductor laser capable of room-temperature continuous-wave operation, an achievement that was previously regarded as impossible. In February 1996, Sony succeeded in maintaining continuous oscillation of a ZnSe semiconductor for 100 hours. These successes brought the commercial development of a blue semiconductor laser within reach. Subsequently it was decided to use GaN, which produces a more stable blue-violet light. Sony had succeeded in developing a blue-violet semiconductor laser suitable for use in consumer electronic products, and in 2003 it launched the world's first BD recorder, the BDZ-S77.

There are differences in the voltage-current properties of a BD laser and CD-R laser. Because a BD laser has a shorter wavelength, the energy per photon is greater. This means that the drive voltage and power consumption are higher than for a CD-R laser.

Creating a Triple-Wavelength Laser

By using a triple-wavelength laser, it is possible to simplify the optical pickup in the optical systems. The advantages include a reduction in the number of parts required, and in the number of assembly and manufacturing processes involved. However, the lasers used in CDs, DVDs, and BDs are all made from different materials, and the development of a simple three-in-one device was thought to be impossible.

The impossible was made possible through technology used in PlayStation 2. Sony had already succeeded in developing a hybrid CD/DVD pickup for PlayStation 2 and was able to apply this technology to the creation of a triple-wavelength pickup. It did this by fabricating a substrate with a BD GaN laser chip and mounting a hybrid CD/DVD chip on top. The excellent thermal conductivity of the BD GaN substrate ensures efficient removal of heat generated by the hybrid CD/DVD chip.

PLAYSTATION 3 was designed to accommodate three totally different optical disc standards—CD, DVD and BD—in a single unit. As a game console that also functions as a next-generation HD player, PLAYSTATION 3 has taken the market by storm.

The Future of the Technology

The evolution of optical discs as media for the storage of video has advanced from the CD to the DVD, and now from the DVD to the BD. The development of semiconductor lasers has been a major factor in this evolution.

With the emergence of the blue-violet laser, the development of lasers with shorter wavelengths appears to have reached a plateau. A semiconductor laser with a wavelength shorter than the blue-violet laser would produce ultraviolet light, and in addition to the development of the semiconductor laser itself, it would also be necessary to develop optical components and recording media capable of withstanding exposure to ultraviolet light. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is often considered the more technical part of marketing. This is because SEO helps in promoting the sites and at the same time requires some technical knowledge - at least familiarity with basic HTML. SEO is sometimes also called SEO copyright, as most of the techniques that are used to promote sites on search engines with text. Generally, SEO can be defined as the activity of optimizing Web pages or entire sites to make them more search engine friendly, achieving high positions in search results.

One of the basic truths in SEO is that even if all the things that are needed to do, this will not automatically ensure top ratings but if you neglect basic rules, this will certainly not go unnoticed. Also, if you set realistic goals - ie to enter the top 30 Google results for a particular keyword, rather than being number one in 5 words, 10 search engines, you will feel happier and more satisfied with their results.

Although SEO helps to increase traffic to your website, SEO is not advertising. Of course, can be included in search results payment for certain words, but basically the idea behind the techniques of SEO is to get the top position because their site is relevant to a search term, not because you pay.

SEO can be a work of 30 minutes or an ongoing activity. This brief explanation is not the most accurate, because as we shall see below, the search engines perform several activities in order to deliver search results - crawling, indexing, processing, calculating relevancy, and recovery.

First, search engines crawl the Web to see what is there. This task is performed by e piece of software called a crawler or spider (or Googlebot, as is the case with Google). Spiders of the links from page to page and index everything they find in their path. Taking into account the number of web pages (more than 20 million euros), it is impossible for a spider to visit a site daily just to see if a new page has appeared or if an existing page is modified. Sometimes crawlers do not visit your site for a month or two, so during this time your SEO efforts will not be rewarded. But there is nothing I can do about it, so just keep quiet.

What you can do is to check what a crawler finds your site. As already mentioned, crawlers are not humans and do not see images, Flash movies, JavaScript, images, password-protected pages and directories, so if you have tons of these on your site, you'd better run the simulator below the spider to see if these things can be seen by the spider. If you are not visible, are not spidered, not indexed, not processed, etc. - in a word that is absent for search engines.

After the robot is the next step is to index its contents. Indexed pages in a giant database that can later be retrieved. Google has announced Chrome OS, an operating system that will give netbooks and full-size desktops alike with its well-known speediness. The OS will be compatible with x86, meaning Intel Atom and ARM Chips will be compatible.

With its main intention for use on netbooks and low cost portable PCs. The move is likely to sharpen the already intense competition between Google and Microsoft, whose Windows operating system controls the basic functions of the vast majority of personal computers.

While Google Chrome OS is aimed initially at netbooks, Google said it believed the software would be able to power full-fledged PCs. This adds a slight confusion to us as Google has already developed the Android open-source operating system that is used in some mobile phones and also netbooks by several manufacturers.

Multiple OEM manufacturers have already jumped onboard it seems, and are prepping a netbook Chrome OS marriage sometime in the second half of 2010. As our friends at ElectricPig have mentioned, Google has had enough of browser wars, they’re now attacking from the core - Windows OS is Microsoft’s home turf.

Android Architecture

The following diagram shows the major components of the Android operating system. Each section is described in more detail below.

Applications

Android will ship with a set of core applications including an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts, and others. All applications are written using the Java programming language.

Application Framework

Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.

Underlying all applications is a set of services and systems, including:

A rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser
Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications (such as Contacts), or to share their own data
A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files
A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar

Libraries

Android includes a set of C/C++ libraries used by various components of the Android system. These capabilities are exposed to developers through the Android application framework. Some of the core libraries are listed below:

Android Runtime

Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.

Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included "dx" tool.

The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

Linux Kernel

Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.

Latest technology: Toyota develops mind controlled wheelchair

The clever Japanese researchers at the Brain Science Institute (BSI) Toyota Collaboration Center have done something quite incredible once again. Using a wheelchair controlled by brain waves measured using EEG, it’s basically a system that will control the ride using brain waves analysed every 125 milliseconds; therefore the name “mind controlled wheelchair”.

As you will see in the video to follow, testers using the wheelchair and the EEG cap system have achieved accuracy of up to 95% which is not a bad figure considering a high tech wheelchair like this may be used in place of current manual wheelchairs for patients who have had strokes or other significant mobility impairments.

Commands for smooth left and right turns and forward motion of the wheelchair are processed every 125 milliseconds by analyzing brain waves using signal processing technology.

This technology is expected to be useful in the field of rehabilitation, and for physical and psychological support of wheelchair drivers.

The BSI-TOYOTA Collaboration Center (BTCC; Hidenori Kimura, Director), has succeeded in developing a system which utilizes one of the fastest technologies in the world, controlling a wheelchair using brain waves in as little as 125 milliseconds (one millisecond, or ms, is equal to 1/1000 seconds). BTCC was established in 2007 by RIKEN, an independent administrative institution (Ryoji Noyori, President), as a collaborative project with Toyota Motor Corporation (Akio Toyoda, President), Toyota Central R&D Labs, Inc. (Takashi Saito, President), and Genesis Research Institute, Inc. (Kiyoshi Nakanishi, Representative Director of Research). Also collaborating in the research were Andrzej Cichocki, Unit Leader, and Kyuwan Choi, Research Scientist, of BTCC’s Noninvasive BMI Unit.

Recently technological developments in the area of brain machine interface (BMI) have received much attention. Such systems allow elderly or handicapped people to interact with the world through signals from their brains, without having to give voice commands.

BTCC’s new system fuses RIKEN’s blind signal separation¹ and space-time-frequency filtering² technology to allow brain-wave analysis in as little as 125 ms, as compared to several seconds required by conventional methods. Brain-wave analysis results are displayed on a panel so quickly that drivers do not sense any delay. The system has the capacity to adjust itself to the characteristics of each individual driver, and thereby is able to improve the efficiency with which it senses the driver’s commands. Thus the driver is able to get the system to learn his/her commands (forward/right/left) quickly and efficiently. The new system has succeeded in having drivers correctly give commands to their wheelchairs. An accuracy rate of 95% was achieved, one of the highest in the world.

Plans are underway to utilize this technology in a wide range of applications centered on medicine and nursing care management. R&D under consideration includes increasing the number of commands given and developing more efficient dry electrodes. So far the research has centered on brain waves related to imaginary hand and foot control. However, through further measurement and analysis it is anticipated that this system may be applied to other types of brain waves generated by various mental states and emotions.

iPhone 3.0 secrets: 7 Hidden features

iPhone 3.0 has settled in quite well in my view and I am sure many have been more than pleased to see Apple finally give the iPhone features such as copy and paste, MMS, landscape mode typing, Spotlight search, push notifications and many more. But did you know that actually there are some “hidden” functions that weren’t announced?

You may have figured out some of them yourself already but there are actually quite a few of them. I wouldn’t like to call this a secret but rather just tips and tricks to using the new iPhone OS 3.0. Check out the full list after the break…

1. You can now have 11 home screens instead of the previous limit of 9 home screens. So you can now launch 32 more iPhone apps from your iPhone’s home screen.

2. Thanks to Spotlight for iPhone, there is no limit on the number of iPhone apps that can be installed on the iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0 assumming that you have the required storage space on your iPhone. If you install more applications then the home screen icon limit, you can now access them using Spotlight.

3. This hidden feature addresses one of the minor annoyance in previous iPhone OS. When a phone call interrupts you, after the phone call you are taken back to the iPhone app you were using before you were interrupted.

4. iPhone’s virtual keyboard has also been updated with few more extra special characters while holding certain characters down similar to the “.com” button. In iPhone OS 3.0, when you hold down the “.” you also get “…”. The dash “-” also displays an em-dash “-” and quotations and apostrophes display “<<” and “>>” and can also be curved.

5. Along with Spotlight, Apple has also added Camera app to the Home button settings (Settings > General > Home Button) in iPhone fimrware 3.0 so if the Camera application is your favorite iPhone; you can quickly launch it from your iPhone’s home screen or any other iPhone app by double-clicking on the Home button.

6. You now have another option to force quit an unresponsive iPhone app. You can hold the sleep/wake button until the red slider appears, then press and hold down the home button to quit the iPhone app.

7. You can undo typing by shaking the iPhone. When you are in the Mail, Messaging, Safari or Notes applications, after you typed a word/several words, just shake the phone and a pop-up will appear, asking you whether you want to undo what you have just entered.

Firefox 3.5: Pasts one million downloads, almost 100 per second!

Firefox 3.5 is shaping up to be one of the most successful Firefox releases to date. Its been reported that the fastest Firefox yet has already been download more than one million times (within a matter of hours and counting!) with downloads almost hitting 100 per second, that’s quite something.

Still, Apple claimed that of the 11 million, some 6 million were users on Windows machines. And Firefox also pings users to do auto-updates when a new version is available.

World’s First Brain-Controlled Gaming Headset is Available

The trend of developing brain controlled handsets affected Emotiv too and the company specialized in brain computer interface technology announced the neuroheadset called EPOC, which lets you control the gameplay with your thoughts and emotions.
EPOC was presented at Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and the retail price was set at $299 with the headset available for pre-orders online on Emotiv’s website.

HTC Hero - first Android phone with flash support

The first Android phone with flash support has been unveiled. A true iPhone killer this time? Known as the HTC Hero, it is a phone which has been speculated with images leaked previously, now officially revealed and pictured below.

The new open source Android based HTC Hero sports a 3.2-inch HVGA (480×320) screen, a five megapixel camera with autofocus, AGPS, digital compass, gravity sensor, 3.5mm headphone jack and a dedicated search button. On the inside lies 512MB of storage, expandable by microSD, 288MB of RAM, and a 528MHz Qualcomm processor.

The Hero will be available later this summer in Europe in July and Asia later in the summer, but won’t be available to the US until some point later this year.
