Whitney Houston and I both was born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in East Orange, New Jersey.

Whitney was found in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills Hotel room by a staff member around 3:30 pm on Saturday afternoon. 2/11/12

This has been another hard hitting blow to the African Americans and the world!

She apparently mixed alcohol and prescription drugs together which at this time is her know cause of death.

She was 48 years old.

So, sad she died at such a young age.

R.I.P Whitney!

We will miss you and your beautiful voice.

Native New Yorker is a song written by Sandy Linzer & Denny Randell & was a 1977 hit single for the dance band Odyssey, which reached number five on the UK charts. In the U.S., the song went to number three on the disco chart.

Native New Yorker also went to number six on the soul chart & number twenty-one on the Billboard Hot 100.

It was also recorded by Frankie Valli in 1977, Esther Phillips in 1978 & Black Box in 1998.

The song was later sampled by Rich Cronin's band Loose Cannons for their song New York City Girls.

"Tighten Up" was a 1968 song by Houston, Texas based R&B vocal group Archie Bell & the Drells. It reached #1 on both the Billboard R&B and pop charts in the spring of 1968. It is ranked #265 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and is one of the earliest funk hits in music history.

"Tighten Up" was written by Archie Bell and Billy Buttier. It was one of the first songs that Archie Bell & the Drells recorded, in a session in 1967, along with a number of songs including "She's My Woman". Soon afterwards Bell was drafted into the U.S. Army and began serving in Vietnam. The song became a hit in Houston, and was picked up by Atlantic Records for distribution in April 1968.

By the summer it topped both the Billboard R&B and pop charts. It also sold a million copies by May 1968, gaining an R.I.A.A. gold disc. The line in "Tighten Up", "we dance just as good as we walk" was a little ironic, given that Bell had been shot in the leg and was consigned to a military hospital bed at the time.

The introduction features Bell introducing himself as being from Houston, Texas. According to the Billboard Book of Number One Hits by Fred Bronson, Bell heard a comment after the Kennedy assassination in Dallas, that "nothing good ever came out of Texas." Bell wanted his listeners to know "we were from Texas and we were good."

The song described an accompanying dance that the band had invented, also called the "Tighten Up"; this dance became popular concurrently with the song.

The phenomenal success of the single prompted the band to rush out an album, despite their incapacitated leader. In 1969 the group recorded their first full album with Gamble and Huff, I Can't Stop Dancing, which reached number 28 on the R&B chart.

Generations of music lovers are mourning the death of "Soul Train" producer/host Don Cornelius, who was found dead in his L.A. home. Cornelius created the music and dance show that became a staple of Afican-American culture. "Soul Train" was a Saturday-morning must see. It also was the longest running first run nationally syndicated show in televison history.
Long before MTV, VH1, and even BET there was Don Cornelius and Soul Train, consistently providing exposure on television for R&B and Soul artists who up until that time could only be seen on shows like the Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand and, once in a while, an NBC special (remember The Temptations and Supremes TCB?) Mr. Cornelius helped changed the landscape of Saturday morning television and influenced the entire American culture.

Soul Train was a staple for ALL YOUNG AMERICANS, and a part of American culture. We didn't watch sesame street, but we watched soul train, everyone I knew did, it was a part of growing up, the part we loved, ALL of us! If you liked music, boogie or not, we ALL got on the SOUL TRAin! So rest in peace, Mr. Cornelius, we ALL appreciate the CULTURE you let us ALL share.

I am truly saddened as well are many others by his passing.

I can remember I couldn't waite for Saturday mornings to come to watch Soul Train. This is when music was simple and fun. The music on Soul Train didn't have any special effects or the new mixers that they have now. It was straight up, down right buggie music.

Personally, I feel that MTV, VH1 and BET should run a Soul Train Marathon in honor of Don Cornelius. Those video channels just don't know how important he was to their very existence. American Bandstand was good... but it didn't groove nearly as hard as Soul Train did. It's a shame that not many people are talking about Don and the wonderful show that he brought to the world for over 35 years.

Bill Withers (born July 4, 1938 in Slab Fork, West Virginia) is an American singer-songwriter who performed and recorded from the late 1960s until the mid 1980s.

Bill’s father died when he was thirteen. He joined the US Navy at seventeen, and stayed there for nine years, before he moved to Los Angeles in 1967. While in Los Angeles, he worked full-time in a Lockheed assembly plant in the day, making toilets for Boeing 747 airliners, then recorded demo tapes and performed in juke joints during the night. When he debuted on the music scene with “Ain’t No Sunshine,” he refused to give up his job at Lockheed because of his belief that the music business was a fickle industry and that he was still a novice compared to other working acts like The Temptations or Sammy Davis, Jr.

His first success was with the company Sussex Records in 1971 with his debut hit single Ain’t No Sunshine on the album Just as I Am. He assembled a touring band made up of: drummer James Gadson, guitarist Bernoce Blackmon, keyboardist Ray Jackson, and bassist Melvin Dunlap.

His second album Still Bill also did well on the charts. It was recorded during a break in the “Just As I Am” tour and included the well-known single “Lean On Me,” which went to #1 on the charts on July 8, 1972. His live album, “Bill Withers, Live at Carnegie Hall,” released in 1973, was one of the best live albums to be released during the 1970s. Other popular songs he sings are “Use Me” and “Lovely Day,” as well as “Just The Two Of Us,” which he performed with jazz saxophonist Grover Washington Jr.
