Apple sets Oct 23 event, smaller iPad expected

Apple has sent out invitations for an event at the California Theatre in San Jose on 23 October, with the tagline "We've got a little more to show you" – prompting intense speculation that it will unveil an "iPad mini", a 7.85in version of its iPad.
The invitations, which had been widely expected – because Apple usually sends them out a week ahead of an event, and the AllThingsD news site had previously pinpointed 23 October – use the same palette effect as in the original iPad invitation from January 2010.
The invitations were sent only hours after Microsoft announced prices for its Surface tablet, which will start at the same price as the existing iPad, but offer 32GB of storage rather than 16GB. The largest model will offer 64GB. However, there are no 3G-capable versions of the Surface, unlike the iPad.
Rumours have been growing in intensity through the year that Apple will release a smaller version of the iPad. Leaks from its supply chain have pointed to the possibility of a device, while analysts, bloggers and developers have speculated that it could release a device with a 7.85in screen – which would have half the area of that 9.7in full-size device – by offering a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, half that of the current generation of iPad.
That would mean developers wouldn't have to rewrite apps to size correctly on the tablet.
However that would also leave questions about the screen resolution of such a device – which would then be lower than the new 7in Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7, made by Asus.
Testimony released in Apple's trial with Samsung earlier this year also showed that Apple executives had previously discussed building a smaller version of the iPad.
However the launch in September of the iPhone 5, which has a longer screen, could mean that Apple has some other form factor in mind for a smaller tablet.
Speculation has also been growing that Apple will show off new versions of its Macbook laptop line with a smaller 13in screen using its "retina" high-resolution display, and a refreshed version of its iPad ~~mini~~.

CISPA  is the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act passed with bipartisan support by a 248-168 vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, despite warnings from privacy experts and a growing public outcry.

The main reason companies are supporting CISPA is because it takes the pressure to regulate users off the private company. Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) required private companies to keep track of what its users were doing and held private companies liable for its users. CISPA transfers that role and responsibility over to a government entity. Effectively, it makes it so a company cannot be sued by a user for handing their information over to the law.

What the problem with CISPA?

 

The problem is that the legislation would give ISPs and other Internet companies too much leeway to collect and share all kinds of user data with the government. And, they add, government agencies could use the data They say it will let federal agencies use the data for national security and other law enforcement purposes as well as to blunt cyber thieves.

Google Drive: Cloud Storage for Google

One of the worst-kept secrets in the technology space, Google Drive, is finally here — live and yours to explore, if you’re game.

But if you’re already using a cloud service, or maybe even a couple of services — I actually use a combination of existing Google products, Dropbox and Apple’s iCloud — the question undoubtedly becomes, Do I really need another cloudplatform in my life?

This question gets a bit more complicated when you consider that Google already has a number of cloud services such as Play for music storage, Picasa for photos, YouTube for videos and even Gmail as well. Who hasn’t emailed himself a file before, right?

Google Drive doesn’t seek to replace any of these existing Google services — though it does replace one cloud service (more on that below). Instead, Google Drive seeks to replace the USB thumb drive stuffed into your backpack or purse. And, if you pay up for extra storage, maybe even the portable disk drive on your desk too. You can store all manner of file formats, and Drive gives you the option to convert files into Google-friendly formats as well.
After spending a couple hours using Google Drive on an Apple iMac, a Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone, and an Asus Transformer Pad tablet, it’s clear that those who will prefer Google Drive are those who already prefer Google itself.

Indeed, if you’ve ever used Google Docs, you’ll feel immediately comfortable using Google Drive. And if you’re a Google Docs power user, you’ll probably outright love Google Drive.
The service offers an iCloud-matching 5GB of storage for free, which should be enough for most users. If you want more space, it will cost you — 25GB of storage will run $2.50 monthly, 100GB is $5 monthly and 1TB will cost $50 a month. Google will allow users to purchase as much as 16TB of storage, but isn’t yet disclosing pricing beyond 1TB. Upgrading to any increased storage size will boost your Gmail storage up to 25GB.

In the browser, Google Drive works exactly the same as Google Docs. In fact, Drive is replacing Docs and soon all Docs users will be Drive users, on mobile devices and on the web. No need to worry about lost files: All your documents will show up in your Google Drive once you’ve switched over, and the process is painless.

Editing documents — even real-time editing of shared docs with multiple people — works in Google Drive just as it did in Google Docs. Sharing and emailing also works exactly the same as before and, just as Docs did, Drive maintains a revision history of edited files, allowing users to view previous versions as far back as 30 days.
Like Google Docs (and unlike Gmail and Google.com), there are no ads to be found in Google Drive. There is, however, a lot of whitespace that could make for ad real estate if ever Google wanted to go that route.

But the new service isn’t perfect. In the web browser version of Google Drive, I found that audio files don’t play back automatically, instead forcing you todownload the file to your desktop, and open it up in another app before you can give it a listen.

In the mobile app — which is currently only available for Android, but is promised for iOS — audio files are kicked out to music apps such as Google’s own Play Music or Spotify. Videos play back just fine in the browser, but in the mobile app, you’re once again kicked into another app to view your media. Rivals such as Dropbox, SugarSync and iCloud stream media without requiring a download or opening another app. It would be nice to see Google do the same.
On the Galaxy Nexus, the Google Drive app worked as well as any other app (e.g., People, Calendar, Maps) built into Google’s latest version of Android, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. With a clean, ICS-consistent aesthetic, it’s one of the better looking and easier to use cloud storage apps available for Android today.

Like Dropbox, Box, SugarSync and many other competing services, a desktop app for Windows and Mac OS X is available for Google Drive as well. But I see little advantage to using the desktop app over the web-based version of Drive. In both versions, uploading a file is as simple as clicking and dragging a file from your desktop into a folder or webpage. And in both versions of Drive, stored documents open in a browser window, and not into other apps.
So far, the best feature of Google Drive is its integration with other Google products, and Google says further integration with Google+, Gmail and Chrome is on the way. So, if you’re already using an Android phone, and Gmail is your main inbox and Calendar is where you make your plans, then Drive will fit into your life nicely.

But there is a flipside: If you’re not steeped in the Google ecosystem, or you’re perfectly happy using one of the many competing cloud services, I don’t see much reason to get behind the wheel of Google Drive just yet. Unless, of course, you refuse to pay for cloud storage, and you want to distribute your overflowing files across as many free services as possible.

Yahoo Laid off 2,000 Workers

Troubled Yahoo has been forced into laying off 1/7 of its total global workforce (significant 14%). Industry experts admit that most likely the cuts won’t stop there.

Yahoo has already axed around 2,000 employees throughout its num

erous branches, and the online giant has warned that more may well be yet to come. Yahoo’s Chief Executive Officer Scott Thompson is on the warpath to slash unnecessary debts and decided to do so by shaking the corporation by the collar in so-called “restructuring”.

The company explained that it should save about $375 million annually from laying off the workers. Meanwhile, it is still unclear whether it is coincidence that, since Yahoo is in financial strife, it is also at odds with another online giant – Facebook – which is preparing for an IPO, and looking forward to a large cash settlement.

At the same time, Yahoo’s advertising has been losing out to both Facebook and Google. According to Bloomberg’s report, Scott Thompson faces a struggle against investor Third Point LLC that already owns almost 6% of Yahoo. The company is looking to place 4 of its own nominees (among whom there is Chief Executive Officer Daniel Loeb) onto the board called “sorely in need” of restructuring. The great idea, it has been suggested, is a fire sale.

Everyone understands that the atmosphere can’t have been rosy at the online giant over the last few years. Despite the fact that Yahoo still boasts of being the most popular Internet portal in the United States, it has been under flak for poor management from former Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz and founder Jerry Yang, who left the building a while ago.

If you recall the latest Yahoo’s attempts to cooperate, you will remember that the possibility of a deal with Chinese Alibaba also fell through.

War Between IE, Firefox, Opera & chrome IE Leads to faar

Internet Explorer seemed to be written off in the war between Firefox and Chrome. However, today it appears that the browser is making a comeback.

Statistics, provided by Net Market Share, revealed that for the second time in 3 months, Internet Explorer made large gains, picking up around 1% of market share. Consequently, Google’s Chrome, Firefox, and Safari lost ground with Internet Explorer 9 winning over new users.

According to the latest results, Internet Explorer gained almost 1% for a 54% market share, taking it to a 6 month high. As for Firefox, it suffered a drop in around 0.5% to 20.5%. Actually, this drop is the worst that the browser has been for the last 3 years. Google’s Chrome fell to 18.5%, and Apple’s Safari lost 0.2% to 5%. My favourite Opera, by the way, also lost 0.09% to 1.62%.

Meanwhile, these results fly in the face of previous announcements from Internet analysts who claimed that Google’s Chrome had overtaken Internet Explorer for the first time ever in March 2012. Today’s statistics measures raw pageviews, without taking into account corrections for pre-rendering, or counting unique visitors to a page.

It reveals that Internet Explorer 9 has gained 2.6% of share in the last month, while its 8 version fell by almost the same amount, dropping by 2.2%. Edition 7 dropped a fraction, down 0.1%, and the much maligned Explorer 6, which even its developer wants dead, picked up over 0.5%. This means that users of IE 8 are switching to IE 9 with 34.5% of Windows 7 users choosing the new browser.

Bill Gates’ software giant has been promoting IE 9, suggesting that users should give it a second chance. The company has been moving users of IE 7 and 8 onto the latest version through automatic updates.

As for Google’s Chrome, it appears to be doing well, while Firefox continues to have a large number of users on edition 3.6 and below, who aren’t upgrading.

Iphone 5 Features And Release Date

The Iphone 5 was expected to be released with the new iOS 5 but complications happened which made the release of the iphone 5 with iOS 5 impossible in Apple’s eyes. So here we have the Iphone 4S, which to many was a major disappointment. Most people were expecting more from one of the world’s biggest and most technologically influential companies to date. The day the Iphone 4s was announced, Apple’s stock plummeted and for good reason. While the Iphone 4s does offer performance upgrades and added features, it was not enough according to the majority of Iphone enthusiasts. While it isn’t the first time Apple released an ‘S’ version in between official versions, it was the fact that it was so out of the blue and unexpected it has shocked people and Apple’s stock.

The iPhone 5 release date is still just rumors circulating with no concrete information. However the fact that Apple seems to prefer to have their major launches in late spring to early summer is probably a good place to speculate as the next release date for Iphone 5. As of right now most tech gurus are saying early summer 2012, but now with the recent release of the Iphone 4s the iphone 5 release date could be delayed further. Customers that buy the iPhone 4s could be extremely angry if Apple were to release the Iphone 5 less than a year later. Unfortunately in today’s technology world 1 year is a very long time, so get used to it.

Not only are these release dates a matter of releasing a bug free product, but there is also a marketing aspect behind them. Apple wants to release at the absolute best time to maximize profits after building months and even years worth of hype. Delaying too long could allow for competition to come in and snag a good percentage of customers that grow tireless of waiting. Releasing too soon could result in a bug filled product that wasn’t tested enough causing major customer support issues and potentially damaging the company’s reputation.

As you can see the iPhone 5 release date is a very touchy subject for both customers, developers and manufacturers with many variables coming into play. Who will know the official release date of the Iphone 5 first? Apple of course! Who will be the next to know? Something to keep in mind though is that Steve Jobs delayed the iPhone 5 because he felt it wasn’t ready, however his successors seem to feel otherwise moving forward with the new phone. So there could be new standards and protocols Apple is taking now that could affect things like release date patterns we’re used to.

Windows could not find any updates(SOLVED)

First, let me say that I've been working on this issue for more than an hour, not including scan times...
it's been a long night.
Every time I tried to update Windows,
I received an error 0x80070643 or 0xc8000247 (mostly the latter) saying Windows could not find any updates.
It was obvious that it wasn't even trying to look for updates,
so I assumed a port was blocked on my firewall or that I had incorrectly configured my new subnet.
After carefully checking these options, I found nothing wrong. I tried downloading the updates manually,
but they wouldn't install, throwing off error after error.

So, from there, I started looking at malware..
I pulled the HDD from my laptop and scanned using a dongle connected to a known-working PC.
MSSE, Spybot S&D, Kaspersky and MicroTrend found nothing.
I searched several forums (including Microsoft's forums) and found several ideas, but no working solutions.

With no light at the end of the tunnel, I looked for disk issues.
No errors with my CHKDSK /R and zero files needed to be replaced with my SFC /SCANNOW.
That's when I checked the Intel Matrix Storage Manager software and found it out of date.
After downloading the newest version from http://ftp.hp.com/pub...8000/sp47845.ex (add the e to the end of the link if you also need the software)
and ran the installer in Administrator mode.
Like a freaking miracle, it worked.
If you come across this same issue trying to update Windows 7,
please check to make sure this software is current,
as apparently you can't even contact the update server,

if it's out of date. Cheers. !!! :)

How to get data off a damaged PC using UBUNTU

If your PC will not run under Windows and you want to test the hardware with another operating system try UBUNTU.

If your PC will not run and you need to get some data off the hard drive, it may be possible with another operating system so try UBUNTU.

So what is this UBUNTU? – well, it is an operating system like Windows, the most important program that runs on a computer. Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.

Ubuntu is easy to use and free. The Ubuntu operating system powers millions of desktops, netbooks and servers around the world. Ubuntu does everything you need it to. It’ll work with your existing PC files, printers, cameras and MP3 players, and it comes with thousands of free applications.

So let’s see if it’s possible for your PC to boot from another Operating System.
This will at least test the hardware and also see if you can see the hard drive and possibly get data off it.

There are two ways to use Ubuntu; by creating a bootable CD on a different PC or by creating a bootable USB flashdrive.

To create a bootable CD you need to have another PC with a cd writer and a spare CD. Download the ISO: Download | UBUNTU

For a bootable USB flashdrive your PC will need to support booting off a USB Stick. If it does go to Download | UBUNTU

Select a location then begin the download.
Save the file onto your PC – remember where you saved it so you can find it again to create the image bootable CD.

Do not copy the ISO file onto a CD – you have to use the ISO to create a bootable CD.
The CD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO. If not – use the free program ImgBurn

When the UBUNTU CD boots you will see a screen with Language on the left panel and two option images labelled:

Try ubuntu without any change to your computer

Install ubuntu.

You can try Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer directly from this CD by using OPTION 1 Try ubunto without any change to your computer

Only this option will run from the CD and not install onto your hard drive – be careful, if you do install onto the PC you will wipe the data and software off your hard drive.. so to repeat, only use Option 1.

Now you should see a Ubuntu desktop
This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working

You may see your hard drive on the desktop – if not have a look in the places on the tool bar at the top of the screen.
Once booted, at the top left corner of the screen in the tool bar, click on path, then click on computer. Once the computer window is opened, it should show all the drives mounted on the computer, and hopefully the bad one will show.

If you can see your hard drive see if you can find your data files.
If you are using Windows XP look in documents and settings under the user name you had on the PC.
If you are using Vista/Windows 7 look in users under the user name you had on the PC.

Now if you have a USB flash drive or external hard drive you should be able to copy your data from the hard drive onto the USB device or the external hard drive.
