One of the things David said in the workshop was that we should watch commercials, occasionally, with the sound off. The point of this exercise was to examine if the footage, we see regularly, was strong enough to convey a message on its own. You should try it and let me know what you think…?!?!

Anyway ...! On the flip side choosing the write score for your video can either detract from or enhance your footage. I remember shooting some test footage with a Canon HV30, which I posted and one comment said, in jest, that “...Foliage never before seemed so dramatic...”. Lets take a look!

I used royalty free music from AudioJungle for that specific video. However, I found lots more through an episode of Film Riot, which elaborated on this very point...

If you’re like me, today is one of those days that you have a “million and one things” todo. Which poses the question “How do I get all these things done in 24hrs?”

We’ll first we must come to terms with the fact that we wont get everything done and will have to prioritize our todo list, strategically.

Burning the Midnight Oil vs The Early Bird
Instead of planning to stay up all night and burn the candle at both ends, go to bed earlier than you would. Set your alarm clock, or cell phone, an hour or two earlier than you would normally wake. Nothing beats a fresh start!

I’ve spent many nights working late and found myself rendered totally useless the next day, even if I get up later than usual. When you start late out of the blocks the odds are always against you.

The Process
Once you’re up make a list of all the things that you have todo, as quickly as the come to mind. Take a few minutes to review the list and group similar tasks. Some may take you on the road, others may require you to send several e-mails or make phone calls.

The tasks are now grouped and must now be weighed in order of priority. Here a few questions I ask myself:

Will this task take me on the road and if so how long will I be on the road?

What time of day is most appropriate to get this task done?

Can this task be postponed to another day?

Should I send my client(s) an update / progress report?

In essence its about how many birds I can kill with one stone. By sifting the tasks we can now progress...

Plot a Course
We have our todo list and we are about to turn the ignition on for our work day but there a few things we must consider. There should be a clear demarkation for work and play time. Make a note of what time you will go for lunch, check e-mails, make and answer telephone calls, check your twitter feed and facebook pages. Lest you get sucked into the black-hole of unproductiveness. Remember time is crucial and you don't have to answer every phone call or respond to every e-mail or status update immediately.

Also, get yourself a time tracking application like timeEdition. This will help us to be aware of how our time is spent. Trust me, you’re going to be surprised!
<!--

A few months ago The Gist sponsored the artwork for an event, my wife and I were invited to the gala night. While at the show I couldn't help but notice the photographer, with a monopod, all the way in the back. Being a skeptic I thought "those photos aren't gonna come out good". I did get a chance to see some of the photos and those taken from the back of the play house came out just as I expected. Why? The photographer was using kit lenses in a low light setting but didn't know how to get the best capture.

I am a hobbyist photographer and found myself in the same situation, in the exact same play house, with only kit lenses for the DSLR I use. Not all my photos came out perfect either but I learned from the experience ( click here to see samples ).

When shooting and event under low light conditions and you only have kit lenses here are some things you can do:

Get a seat in the front row

Use the kit lens that gives you the largest aperture (this is usually the wide angle lens)

Increase your ISO

Set your camera to "aperture priority" mode

Set your auto focus to continuous (since the subjects may be moving)

Set your shutter release to continuous

Use a tripod/monopod if you have one (try not to impede the movement of patrons)

It's a great thing to be able to afford a prim lens but until that day comes one has to learn how to use what he already owns to give the best results possible.
<!--

Here's a tip you may find useful if you've ever been asked to record an event, like a play, dance/variety show over an extended period and only have access to one camcorder. Especially, if renting or borrowing and additional camera is not an option.

Try and attend the event, 2 to 3, times while its running and record from different angles. Remember that the footage being captured may be viewed by individuals who weren't present at the event and by having different POVs you engage them more.

Also, take into consideration that on each staging of the event the cast/players may change and you want you footage to be as consistent as possible.

What if the event is being staged only once?
Attend the as many rehearsals as possible, scout the venue and look for opportunities to move from one position to the next between scenes/sets or find a good location and record from there for the duration of the event.
<!--
Since my iMac was stolen I've been playing catch-up on almost all my projects. Especially, since I didn't back-up the last 3 months of work. Though my workload is crazy, out of sheer idleness and wanting a lil break I decided to change my Facebook profile photo... this eventually lead to this desktop wallpaper - iDream of Macs. I really do! I work on a Window XP computer now and I can't stop day dreaming about macs.

A few weeks ago my home office was broken into and several items were stolen. Two of which were iMacs. My wife and I were privileged to assist law enforcement retrieve some of the items, one of which was a 20" iMacs. In light of this I have a few tips that will help you if you should suffer the same fate.

1. Store Documents in a Safe Place

With the purchase of your computer comes booklets, pamflets, stickers and tons of paper. Some of which you may consider pointless but don't be so eager to throw them out. Sift through all the documents you've received and ensure that you have a receipt, the serial number, MAC address and whatever else is unique to your computer.

Once you've identified all these documents place them in a waterproof container and store them on a elevated surface (like a shelf). DO NOT store in your laptop bag or the box the computer was shipped in! If possible scan the documents and save them in a cloud app like Google Docs. This information will be vital the minute your laptop gets stolen.

2. Implement a Back-Up System

It's great to have a external drive to back-up your files. However, in the event you drive is with your computer at the time when it's stolen say "Bye Bye".

I highly recommend the use of a third-party service, like Mozy, CrashPlan or LogMeIn Back-up, to archive your files. The ideal thing would be to use a desktop application to back-up to your external hard drive and then mirror that using web-based back-up service.

3. Install a Tracking Software

It's now time to ensure that wherever you computer goes you know. Install a tracking application like Prey Project, Adeona, Locate PC or LoJack for Laptops. The features will vary with each software, from giving you a screenshot to taking a photo of the perp. But one thing they all have in common is that they will notify you once your computer comes online, giving you an IP address - this you need to give to your ISP who will give the account details to the local police only.

While installing the tracking application be careful not to create a desktop shortcut, taskbar icon or a menu listing. You want the application to run in the background unbeknown to the perpetrator.

If you can afford to by LoJack for Laptops I recommend you do. Why? One of the main features of this application is that it writes itself onto the bios of your computer, which means that even if the thief wipes your hard drive and installs a another OS the tracking application will send out a distress signal while on the internet.

4. Auto Login (Optional)

Auto Login! Are you crazy? Yes I am... if the thieves boot up your computer and they are unable to access the computer due to a username & password they're just going to wipe your system and install a new operating system. If you computer boots up and gives them instant access to your desktop they'll get the feeling that it's smooth sailing and let their guard down. The minute they start browsing is the minute you'll get an ip address. That's what we want.

They may delete a few files and applications. However, you can protect your most important files by password protecting them.

5. Get Insurance (Optional)

If your computer is for more than recreation give a call to your local insurance company, choose an appropriate premium and insure your investment. In the event you don't get your computer back you can acquire another and use your archived files to quickly regain equilibrium.

Among the culprits is photography. It has become a regular habit to ski over the mountainous pages of the internet looking for ideas and inspirations... things I can try, even though don't own a DSLR (the camera I use belongs to my Father-in-law. Thanks Mr. A!).

I like Columbus wanted to prove that my world isn't flat, 2 dimensional and boring through a viewfinder... but before I could set sail I had to learn from those who have gone "to infinity and beyond!"

During the 28 RAW challenge I have discovered many a paradise and I have made a treasure map for 'mi mates'...

What's dwelling in my niggin...?
I've come to realize that as much as photography is the art of capturing light some photographers don't limit themselves to the initial capture but take it one step further in post processing. They let their imagination handle the strokes of their brush on the canvas of photoshop as they retouch pictures creating masterpieces.

This adds new dimensions to my voyage... I must now find the equator between the traditional and the modern. Though some purists may object, what is true is that "one enhances the other" - Danah Cameron... there is so much to learn but the voyage continues...
<!--
I had some spare time on my hands and attempted to recreate the Google Nexus in Adobe Photoshop. My wife challenged me to do it in Adobe Illustrator - she is crazy good with Illustrator, a guru! - but I had to call it quits. I'm more comfortable with Photoshop than with Illustrator.

What the heck do you get in the layered psd? The phone body (flattened), screen and glass/reflection. Hope you find the file useful!

In an attempt to sharpen my tailoring scissors, I flipped through a few web pages to find a suitable concept, that would spawn inspiration. I observed a few well known myspace pages - Kanye West, John Legend, Lil Jon, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys - just to name a few and nothing assaulted my attention, though the all had elements I liked. Therefore, I resorted to many popular web 2.0 template sites and galleries. But again, nothing!

Finally! I left the uptown; the upscale, posh, new, trendy websites and went downtown where it all originated. And there oozing with creative aspirations was a deviant, I was attracted to her and she gave me what I craved - INSPIRATION.

Below are 21 inspirational websites I found on DeviantArt:

A few weeks back I played a board game, Cash Flow, created by the author of ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’, Robert Kiyosaki. To me the game is a warped version of Monopoly. The concept of the game is that we are living in world filled with expenses, budgeted and unexpected. The ‘Rat Race’. And the only way to get out is to have a passive income that is more than your current expenditure. Then and only then can you chase your dreams.

After playing the game I was desirous of applying some of these principles to my life. But the thought of making a passive income from designing website templates did not seem feasible. Until I saw this:

“Since joining ThemeForest I'm making enough passive income a month to cover my mortgage and its afforded me to buy a new BMW M3”

- Contempoinc (from ThemeForest)

I know the guy probably lives in Europe where its cheaper to by a BMW than it is to buy one in Jamaica (W.I.). However, it’s clear that this is Contempoinc’s experience.

To Sell or Not to Sell
I pride myself on being able to understand what a client wants and designing a website that fits like a glove. Which means that it’s not very often that I get a file rejected that I can slice up, package and put on a shelf for resale.

But I fought tirelessly with the thought of selling my templates on someone else’s network. Why not create my own? I can make more money that way than have someone dictate the price of my work?

True! But there are some advantages to consider. While it may seem better to do my own thing if I were to sell in a marketplace (like Envato’s) I’d get a lot of opportunities. I would:

Gain the ‘right of passage’ to an existing client database

Have the support of a reputable company behind my product

Showcase all my products

Attract a following

Be able to network with potential clients and associates

The short of it is. I get access to a client base that I would have to spend money to attract. Not to mention I’ll be using and existing marketplace instead of slaving hours to create or spending money I don’t have to develop.

The key that unlocks the flow of Passive Income
What is the science behind designing websites as a passive income and being successful? Well the answer is hard work, dedication, volume and customer service.

Hard work and dedication go hand in hand, there is no separating the two. A designer/developer has to be committed to honing his skill in order to produce work of the highest standard. The challenge is never to out do another designer, it’s to out do yourself - your last project. John Maxwell puts it this way “If what you did yesterday still looks big to you, you haven’t done much today.”

Finding a rhythm and a effective workflow makes it possible to increase your product line. The more items you have, the larger your volume of work and the greater the possibility of making a sale grows.

Sales can also be affected by your design. Many may think designing a website similar to the top sellers is the key but it’s often those who are thinking outside the box, fusing tradition with creativity, that make an impact, winning the hearts of buyers.

Though making a passive income in the traditional sense doesn’t include servicing clients, selling templates does. You can provide all the documentation in the world but the use of your template will vary with each customer. Providing support is critical because happy clients return or recommend you to their associates.

The Short of It
What the heck am I trying to say? It’s possible to get passive income by designing a few web templates for resale but it requires commitment. And the best place to start is in one of Envato's Marketplaces like ThemeForest.

Just remember what they say in the technology world, if you put garbage in, you’ll get garbage out.
<!--
Over the last few years I haven't spent much time savoring the designs of others but I managed to chisel out some time recently and I came across a few website I like.

All the sites I'm about to list use WordPress; the use of WordPress as a Content Management System (CMS) has been growing over the past few years. I'm fairly new to WordPress (I normally use CuteNews or Joomla), but what I've observed is that a lot of the designs are similar (and tend to be monotonous or boring). Now the websites I've included below have elements that may be similar to a lot of websites you've seen. However, what you will notice is that their layouts - use of colour & graphical elements and content structure are slightly different - which makes them stand out among the rest. Lets take a look!

I've been designing for 5+yrs and recently got my first template, iConstructive, on ThemeForest. In celebration of that I'd like giveaway an e-mail template, YuuuMovie, inspired by the newsletter I get from my DVD rental store, Movie Express.

I did 2 versions of YuuuMovie and they are now yours for FREE! In the zip files you'll find a valid HTML file, Layered PSD and documentation on how to edit the files.

Enjoy!

Preview: YuuuMovie v2

As a freelancer / small business owner time is everything! For a long time I've been using Kronos to keep track of jobs I do, the total time and the cost of the job. Kronos is not bad but I've always wanted a way to export my data and change the currency from € to $.

The developers of MAMP have an application the call TimeEdit. Though I've been using MAMP for a while but it never occured to me to try TimeEdit until now.

TimeEdit is great! It helps to streamline my workflow and to be more effective. With TimeEdit I can add clients, regular tasks and attach my hourly rate to each task. As if that wasn't enough, I can TimeEdit it to my Google Calendar or iCal and once I've completed a task it makes an entry into the calendar.

At the end of each month I can look at a report showing how many hours I've worked and how much I should have earned. I can also export the data as a Microsoft Excel file.

TimeEdit has tons more features to make job tracking easier. It works on both Windows and Mac OS. I love this application because it doesn't require internet access and the best thing of all is that TimeEdit is FREE.
<!--

My wife and recently registered our business, The Gist, and I started working on our portfolio using WordPress. Somehow the theme doesn't fit our image, and I'm back at the drawing board.

I thought about selling the theme on ThemeForest but instead I'll make it available for free. That's right I said free!

The name of the theme is Gistfolio. I like the fact that it uses a lightbox to display the projects, adds a 'new' ribbon on projects with the new tag and adds icons to highlight the apps I use on each project.

You can download and tell me what you think. Enjoy!

Download: Gistfolio
<!--

After much delay PocketSite is now ready for release. The rationale behind this project is simple. I needed a simple web app that could generate a website without the use of a complex MySQL driven CMS, which some of my clients cannot afford and this was the solution. With PocketSite it's easy to turn any ThemeForest template into a PocketSite theme within minutes.

Whats good about PocketSite is that it's:

Light weight (generates content from .txt files)

Doesn't use a MySQL (to create dymanic content)

Easy to theme

Download: PocketSite v2.6.3
Preview: PockeSite v2.6.3 (will be up until the end of this week)
<!--

That has been my motto for a while. So when I'm about to develop a website I think Joomla or WordPress?

For me both are in two different categories. Joomla is built to be a CMS, which can be used like a blog and Wordpress is a Blog, which can be used like a CMS. I remember having a discussion about Joomla with a web programmer, from the Gleaner Online, who exclaimed "Joomla is an overkill..." for some projects. I agreed, but somehow found myself, always, using Joomla (and sometimes CuteNews) on my projects, promising myself that one day I'd use WordPress. Well that day has come!

I recently bought 2 excellent books, WordPress 2.7 Complete & RockStar WordPress Designer, which helped me to better understand how to use WordPress as a CMS. I also read some tutorials on Theme Forest's Blog - In the Woods. And I'm now more educated, my eyes have been opened! I'm now using WordPress on my latest project and for my company portfolio - The Gist (coming soon).

Is Joomla better than WordPress or is WordPress better than Joomla? I know this has been an ongoing debate across the internet. What's my resolve is? None is better than the other, as I said before they are in 2 different categories, you can't compare apples with oranges. When developing a website you have to consider the scope of the project carefully as well as the budget and choose the web application most suitable.

The truth is that WordPress has more readily available documentation but Joomla is a little more robust. I love both applications and now feel comfortable to use either of them on any project.
<!--

My wife (business partner) and I have been in discussions about what expenses we can afford this month, a screencast application is not on our priority list. So I started looking for free options.

I've used Jing before but didn't like the fact that it only allows me to save the screencasts as flash files (.swf) with the free version. Though US$14 a year is reasonable that's not an option right now.

Jing allows me 5mins to record a screencast which you can be save to my hard drive or uploaded to a web server using FTP. I think 5mins is sufficient timing for a screencast but I want to be able to add an intro frame and possible background audio.

With this in mind I went Googling for "free screencast apps for mac" which lead me to CamTwist. The application isn't bad, it just has one hang up. The video quality is poor. In order to get a better video quality I have to by QuickTime Pro for US$29+.

The truth is if I had to spend US$29+ I'd simple by a screencast application like iShowU. However, at the end of the day Jing came out on top. It works best!
<!--

However, on completion of the 1st build I've dubbed the app PocketSite.

PocketSite was designed to help me quickly implement a website using .txt files with HTML code and a simple php templates. Eliminating the need for me to use a complex cms.

I've been working on the default template and have decided to give you a sneak peak of what PocketSite will look like.

There is a lot more to come ;) ... Well my work load has been crazy as of late, I must give God thanks that I have work in this recession time.

'Any-who!' I was finishing up a project and noticed an e-mail in my inbox from Apple. It was about the new iPod nano.

I've wanted an iPod for a while, from the very 1st day I gave away my Sony Walkman, but I just couldn't decide on which one. Primarily because I wanted a portable mp3 player with a radio and iPods didn't have that feature. Well guess what? They do now!

The new iPod nano has a host of kool features including video recording and fm tuner. With the fm tuner you can pause live listening. Yes! Pause live listening...in a developing country like Jamaica a portable radio is a must have. Especially during hurricane season! Not to mention listening to Full House Fridays, with Francois and the gang on FAME FM.

The iPod nano starts at US$149, for the 8GB and goes up to US$179, for the 16GB. That is roughly JM$13,500 and it's worth every penny of it.

I'm definitely gonna get one before the year ends...trus' me!
<!--
