ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR SUPERIOR FUEL ECONOMY
The 2012 Accent’s all-aluminum 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder engine utilizes the latest engine technology to deliver a class-leading 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque and a best-in-class standard 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway fuel economy rating.

The engine’s most notable feature is its use of GDI, a first for the subcompact category. By precisely controlling the injection of fuel, GDI allows for better fuel economy, increased power and reduced emissions. The application of Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts allows for increased efficiency, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Other elements resulting in reduced fuel consumption include an Alternator Management System, an offset crankshaft design, variable induction system and electronic throttle control. To reduce lifetime operation costs and increase reliability, the Gamma features a maintenance-free silent roller timing chain. The Gamma also uses innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating.

Several other systems have been improved over the outgoing model, each contributing to increased fuel efficiency. The 2012 Accent can be equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transaxle with SHIFTRONIC manual control, delivering smooth and efficient power delivery. Low-rolling resistance silica tires and a slippery shape (0.30 cd) reduce friction with the road and the air. This aerodynamic shape also includes a kicked up trunk edge, wheel arches which shield the tires and an optimized engine undercover. Finally, the ActiveECO function modifies engine and transmission control to smooth out throttle response. By turning on the ActiveECO function, drivers can realize up to a seven percent increase in real-world fuel economy.

Despite the additional content, safety features and technology packed into the all-new Accent, Hyundai has avoided the typically associated penalty of increased weight. A low curb weight corresponds to an improvement not only in fuel economy but all other dynamic areas. In fact, Accent offers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class by far, providing drivers with both low fuel consumption and responsive performance. Highlights which contribute to a low curb weight include the 1.6-liter Gamma GDI engine with aluminum block that is more powerful and 40 lbs lighter than the outgoing 1.6-liter Alpha engine, monotube shock absorbers, integrated parking brake and a super flat torque converter.

40 MPG – AN 18 PERCENT IMPROVEMENT IN FUEL ECONOMY
The 2012 Accent’s highway fuel economy of 40 mpg is an 18 percent improvement over its predecessor’s 34 mpg highway manual transmission fuel economy rating.

Accent’s fuel economy is 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, with the six-speed automatic transmission or manual transmission. These figures give Accent a highway-only driving range of up to 456 miles.

Hyundai doesn’t believe consumers should have to pay a premium for safety, so a long list of safety features is included as standard equipment on all 2012 Accent models. A total of six airbags protect occupants in the event of a collision, including two front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and curtain side-impact airbags for front and rear passengers. Accent’s new standard front-seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant’s head and the head restraint during certain rear collisions and are highly recommended by safety organizations such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Active front head restraints are not available on Fiesta, Yaris, Aveo or Mazda2.

Collision Load Dispersion

The Accent’s underlying structure is engineered to protect occupants using a Collision Load Dispersion mechanism and the rear doors have internal beams. The vehicle’s structure distributes the force of an impact in three ways to minimize floor deformation and maintain the integrity of the cabin.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control work together to help deliver confident handling in all conditions. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) integrates control of the ESC and motor-driven power steering (MDPS) to provide handling assistance in slippery conditions or in sudden cornering scenarios. The system can deliver up to eight Newton-meters of counter-steering effort when required to assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle.

Vehicle Stability Management

A key safety element for any vehicle is its braking system. Accent is the only car in the subcompact segment to offer four wheel disc brakes as standard equipment. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) featuring Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) is also included. EBD examines the effect of vehicle load on weight distribution and apportions the braking force between front and rear axles to maximize stopping ability. In the event of a panic stop, BA ensures that maximum braking force is applied.

SMALL ON THE OUTSIDE, BIG ON THE INSIDE

All Accents ride on a 101.2 inch wheelbase, 2.8-inches longer than the previous generation. The 66.9-inch width on all 2011 models increased by 0.2 inches for 2012. The Accent 4-door’s overall length has increased by 3.5 inches to 172 inches. Total length of the new five-door version is 162 inches. As a result, Accent enjoys superior interior volume and passenger space. While the car’s exterior dimensions are consistent with those of traditional subcompacts, Accent is classified by the EPA as a compact sedan thanks to its interior volume. Toyota Yaris and Ford Fiesta are classified as subcompact cars. In addition the Accent five-door has best-in-class cargo volume and more cargo capacity than the Nissan Juke and Infiniti EX 35 crossover. The Accent has best-in-class front and rear shoulder room and the five-door also has more cargo volume than many of its compact five-door competitors.

Convenient storage spaces are included throughout the cabin, including bottle holders in the front doors and a storage tray at the base of the center console. A sliding armrest storage console is available, which is a segment first. Split and fold 60/40 rear seats are standard for increased cargo flexibility when transporting longer items. Not only does Accent have multiple storage areas, but it delivers more useable storage capacity.

The first step toward confident driving dynamics is a rigid structure. To this end, the 2012 Accent employs high-tensile strength steel to deliver a strong, light and stiff body which is 22 percent stiffer than the previous generation. Increasing the stiffness of the structure allowed Hyundai engineers more flexibility in terms of suspension tuning. The end result is a better balance between handling precision and ride comfort. Accent employs a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and twin-tube gas shock absorbers. The rear suspension is a torsion axle setup with coil springs and monotube shock absorbers.

All Accents have column-mounted, motor-driven electric power steering that adjusts instantly to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional steering system. Accent’s turning diameter of 34.1 feet is better than Versa, Fiesta and Fit. The SE five-door model has a unique steering calibration for a sportier feel.

The 2012 Accent joins the Hyundai line-up sporting the company’s increasingly popular “Fluidic Sculpture” design. The vehicle’s exterior lines are intended to be futuristic, dynamic, and sleek. In a segment typically associated with staid designs, Accent stands out from the crowd. While the styling provides an attractive form, it’s also functional, featuring a slippery 0.30 coefficient of drag for Accent sedan and .31 for Accent five-door. Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille and detailed swept-back headlights give Accent a compact athletic face. Five-door SE models include a sporty roof-mounted spoiler and vertical taillights. For an assertive stance, 16-inch alloy wheels are available on GLS and standard on SE.

COLOR PALETTE
The 2012 Accent GLS is available with gray or beige two-tone interior. The five-door GS and SE trims are available with a gray interior or a monotone black interior. All Accents have cloth-like pillar trim made of fibrous tissue and volcanic rock for a premium look and feel.

The Accent has long been at the bottom of the automotive food chain, the absolute cheapest car at the rental car counter. It had a decent ride but was slow and basic safety equipment, such as antilock brakes, was hard to find. Stability control wasn’t even offered and crash tests weren’t good.

Now manufacturers are paying a lot more attention to their small cars, making them feel more substantial and adding more equipment. The redesigned Accent follows this trend. Its styling resembles the larger Sonata and Elantra, carrying on current Hyundai themes. There’s also more equipment now including the mandatory-for-2012 stability control.

From the various reviews and details floating around on the web, it seems that the Hyundai’s all new Verna is a champion when it comes to the overall class levels, selection of engines, the equipment level and best ride quality. That leaves us with all significant things that can make or break purchasing decisions, the price. 2011 Hyundai Verna’s top level diesel model could be priced at approx Rs. 10.5 Lakh, (Ex-Showroom) & this is the indicative cost at the dealers end. Now, consumers are not sure if that the value pricing for the top level diesel variant even though they have to confess that the top level diesel new Verna comes with the automatic transmission gearbox too.

The recent segment leader & a comparable variant to the new Verna diesel premium model, the 2011 Volkswagen Vento highline price approx rupees 9.25 Lakh (ex-showroom of Delhi) & based on this the new Verna appears a bit pricey at first glance. But then, the Vento does not have a start stop switch a reverse camera & more importantly the automatic transmission gearbox. So, allowing for the equipment on offer, new Hyundai Verna might handle to find itself enough customers but price tag of rupees 50000 and would have made the Verna superb value-for-money. All believed that this information is not the official release by Hyundai Motors.

Hyundai is recalling 7,829 Tucson crossover vehicles because of failure to comply with a federal safety standard. The photometry requirements of the rear reflectors installed in rear bumpers don't meet federal standard number 108.

Hyundai is asking owners to bring their Tucson into their dealer for free replacement of the reflectors. Owners may also contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 for more information.

Long Term Update 6: 2010 Hyundai Tucson

At the Hyundai Tucson’s price range, value is the factor that is most critical to a crossover’s success. There are so many crossovers with a price tag of $25,000-$30,000 that what differentiates one from the rest of the pack is the features. And the Hyundai Tucson has tons of ‘em.

Our topline Limited AWD comes with enough goodies that one staffer, having not driven the Tucson for a while, logged, “When it comes to the cabin, this Tucson has everything! Heated seats, Bluetooth audio, power everything, satellite radio, nav system, rearview camera, huge sunroof. I kept finding myself thinking, ‘Oh, yeah-it has that, too.’” The steering-wheel-mounted controls also received kudos; they’re well-placed on the wheel, and the layout is nicely uncluttered. As digital integration director Mike Floyd noted, “This is a really nicely designed set of controls that have proven simple and effective and rest roughly at the 9 and 3 positions, making it easy for thumbs to reach and operate.”

But that isn’t the whole story. While it has plenty of features, when it comes to attention to detail, the Tucson leaves some editors wanting. There are complaints of road noise at freeway speeds, steering that’s too lifeless, some poorly placed controls, and structural creaks when the Hyundai goes over speed bumps or enters driveways. There is definitely room for improvement, which is why we had mixed feelings about this long-termer. As copy editor Zach Gale explains, “This Tucson is impressive, considering the vehicle it replaces, but solid design carries this small SUV only so far.” And considering how far this crossover has come in just two generations, we expect Hyundai will get the bugs out for the next one.

There are many reasons Hyundai is thriving, when most of the other carmakers have been floundering, and the new Tucson crossover adds one more reason.

We’ve been testing Hyundai models since the Excel first came into the U.S. in 1986. After a shaky start the first few years Hyundai begin to refine and grow, and over the last decade we’ve been amazed by the advancements in quality, innovation and value. Each new model or new generation has shown a significant leap forward.

Progress started to show even more in 2006 when Hyundai advanced to third place in the J.D. Power and Associated Quality ratings, just behind Lexus and Porsche. In 2009, the Hyundai Genesis was picked as the North American Car of the Year and for 2010 and Consumer Reports ranked Hyundai (and Kia) as the fourth best automaker in the U.S.

For 2010, the second-generation Tucson debuts with a new fluid European design from Hyundai’s Frankfurt-based design and technical center.

Inside the Tucson has a spacious and stylish interior. The controls and gauges positioned high on the center stack and the attractive three-spoke steering wheel have a positive high-quality feel. We thought the extra little visor over the high-mounted navigation system looked like an afterthought in an otherwise well-designed dash. We did like the ice blue dash lighting that added a sophisticated touch at night.

To keep the interior air clean, the Tucson Limited has a CleanAir Ionizer that automatically cleans the air when the heater or air conditioner is running.

Powered by Hyundai’s efficient Theta II 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine, the Tucson earns an EPA rating of 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for the four-wheel drive model with a six-speed automatic transmission (or up to 31 mpg for the 2WD version with manual transmission). The 176-hp engine drives this smallest of the Hyundai crossovers from 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds.

To increase fuel economy, the 4WD system automatically activates when needed, distributing the power equally between the front and rear wheels. The system includes a driver-selectable AWD lock allowing for a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels for off-road and very slippery conditions.

The Tucson is available in two trim levels, GLS and Limited. GLS pricing starts at $19,790 for the front wheel drive version with six-speed manual transmission, including the destination charge. The six-speed automatic transmission is $1,000 extra. The very well equipped Limited is $25,140 for the FWD and $1,500 more for the 4WD version.

The Hyundai 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty has added an extra level of buyer confidence for the last few years, and it continues on the Tucson.

The Tucson has a solid stable feeling even on the winding mountain roads. It’s much more quiet and comfortable on the highway than we expected it to be.

We especially liked the tight 34.7-foot turning radius, the six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual shifting and nicely designed interior. We found nothing we didn’t like.

The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, expected to hit  dealerships later this year, is the South Korean company’s first hybrid  in the US market.  Apparently, Hyundai took its time, scrutinized the  hybrid competition, and attempted to outdo it in every respect.  At a  price below $26,000, Hyundai has produced a mainstream mid-size hybrid  sedan that provides real competition for class-leading fuel economy.   Hyundai expects the Sonata Hybrid to achieve 37 miles per gallon in the  city and 39 mpg on the highway.

The company is taking direct aim at the Toyota Camry Hybrid (33/34) and Ford Fusion Hybrid  (41/36), the two most popular regular-looking mid-size hybrid sedans.   While the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid does not look exactly like its  conventional sibling—more about that in a moment—Hyundai decided not to  copy the unique aero-look of the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.    Moreover, Hyundai went its own direction on technology—by developing  an original proprietary hybrid architecture to reduce weight and to  improve highway fuel economy.

"The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is the new kid on the block, but it's not a  follower," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America.  "Its full parallel hybrid configuration and breakthrough lithium  polymer batteries offer a new take on traditional hybrid design, while  its unique design sets it apart from the mid-size hybrid pack."
  
Balancing Highway and City MPG  
Unlike hybrid systems from Ford and Toyota, the Hyundai system does  not use a continuously variable transmission with integrated electric  motors and generators. Instead Hyundai is using its new six-speed  automatic transmission with an electric motor that takes the place of  the torque converter.  The Sonata Hybrid's six-speed automatic transmission could be its powerful secret weapon.  What’s the difference? It means that Hyundai is trying to address the  common complaint that hybrids are boring to drive—and provide great  mileage for city driving conditions, but not so much for highway  driving. 

“Unlike traditional [power-split] hybrids that trade off highway fuel  economy for higher city ratings, the Sonata Hybrid delivers  best-in-class highway fuel economy, while still delivering about a 40  percent improvement in city fuel economy compared to a Sonata equipped  with the Theta II GDI engine,” said Krafcik. “We think this is a better  balanced approach for the majority of car buyers.”

The full hybrid architecture allows the vehicle to operate on an  electric motor only, a gasoline internal combustion engine only, or a  combination of the two depending on driving conditions and driver  demands. The approach also results in a total combined output of the  engine and motor of 209 horsepower—beating out the Camry Hybrid (187 hp)  and the Ford Fusion Hybrid (191 hp).

The hatchback Toyota Prius, with its combined 50-mpg rating, is still  way ahead of the pack on both highway and city efficiency numbers—but  shoppers are more likely to put the Sonata Hybrid in the larger mid-size  sedan (with trunk) category along with the Camry and Fusion.
  
Lithium Polymer Batteries and Lighter Weight  
Hybrid critics have complained that the need to tote heavy batteries  means one step forward and two steps back.  Hyundai deals with that  issue by using lightweight lithium polymer batteries.  The lighter  batteries, and other weight reductions make the Sonata Hybrid the  lightest vehicle in the segment, at just 3,457 pounds—263 pounds lighter  than the Fusion Hybrid. Combined with Sonata’s best-in-class horsepower  rating, Sonata Hybrid has a significant advantage in power-to-weight  ratio.

The Sonata Hybrid’s 1.4 kilowatt-hour pack battery pack weighs just  95.9 pounds versus the Camry Hybrid’s 123.9 pounds. The compact battery  pack resides in the forward portion of the trunk to maximize cargo  space.  Compared with nickel metal hydride batteries, lithium polymer  batteries deliver the same power with 20 to 30 percent less weight, 40  percent less volume and 10 percent greater efficiency over the nickel  metal hydride batteries found in today’s hybrids.  The battery cells,  supplied by LG Chem, are similar to the cells that General Motors are  using in the Chevrolet Volt.
   
Slick and Slippery  
If Hyundai can undercut the price of the Fusion and Camry hybrids, it  will deliver a more powerful and efficient vehicle at a better value.   But what does it look like?  On that front, Hyundai puts form in service  of function—better aerodynamics. The most dramatic design flair is an  all-new front fascia, with anthropomorphic lizard-eye headlights.  New  wheels and extended rocker panels improve airflow across the flanks.  In  the back, the bumper cover has been reshaped with sharp creases at the  corners to minimize drag. These changes drops the hybrid's projected  drag coefficient from the standard Sonata's already slippery 0.28 to  just 0.25—matching the 2010 Toyota Prius’s drag coefficient.

Stylish 2011 Hyundai Sonata plays a richer tune

The affordably priced 2011 Hyundai Sonata features details that many would expect only in much more expensive sedans.

While most car companies were being hammered in 2009, Hyundai sold more than 100,000 vehicles – one of only six companies to reach that mark – and managed to increase its market share from 4.9 to 7.1 per cent.

Sales executives would sell their grandmothers for a tenth of a point of share; to grab 2.2 points, an increase of more than 40 per cent – well, lighting candles at Lourdes is not out of the question.

It was partly good luck (the economic crisis tends to favour carmakers who build low-cost high-value products) and partly good management (Hyundai happened to have the new compact Elantra sedan and Touring crossover entering hot market segments just as the poop hit the financial fan, bolstered by the publicity generated by its Genesis luxury sedan winning both the Canadian and North American Car of the Year awards).

Last month continued that roll, with Hyundai's sales up more than 30 per cent compared to January 2009, putting it sixth overall, just behind Honda whose sales dropped 15 per cent.

The car market is a tough master, never mind Hyundai's bosses. Next month, both will ask, "What have you done for me lately?''

Two parts of that answer are the new Tucson compact crossover launched late last year, and the new Sonata "mid-size'' sedan, which is arriving in showrooms as you read this. Prices start at $22,649.

Though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the new Sonata qualifies for "large car'' status because of its total interior room (passengers plus cargo), it will compete against the usual suspects in the mid-size segment, notably (by Hyundai's reckoning) Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Fusion. Hyundai doesn't mention Mazda6 or Subaru Legacy, but they are players here, too.

Hyundai has been trying for some time to become "aspirational" – to make cars people WANT to buy, not just HAVE to buy.

Sure, the company wants to maintain its value story: low price, easy on fuel, lots of features, excellent warranty. But it is seeking more emotional commitment from its owners, stressing things like class-leading J. D. Power Initial Quality ratings, technological leadership in fuel-efficiency and more modern, more attractive styling.

Perhaps the best indication of success here is that the Automotive Lease Guide, one of the most important determiners of residual value for lease calculations, believes the new Sonata will be worth 53 per cent of its new-car price at the end of a 36-month lease. That compares well to Accord's class-leading 55 per cent, and very well to Altima's 53, Fusion and Camry's 49 and Malibu's 46.

Why is Automotive Lease Guide so keen on the new Sonata?

First, it looks good. Hyundai makes a lot of noise about "fluidic sculpture" being the inspiration and design theme for their new cars. Uh-huh.Whatever – it does look modern, sleek and stylish, both outside and in.

At a time when most cars in this class are skimping on interior finish and materials, Hyundai has upped the ante in Sonata, creating quite a luxurious and well-appointed cabin.

Lots of standard kit as well, among the most praise-worthy items being active front seat headrests to reduce whiplash.

Heated seats front and rear are standard or available in all but the most base trim level.

Six airbags and a stronger, stiffer structure also give Sonata "good'' ratings for all four collision types by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Sonata also checks my other big safety box, making Electronic Stability Control standard across the board. Likewise ABS brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Emergency Brake Assist, Cornering Brake Control and Traction Control. Bluetooth connectivity is another standard feature.

Mechanically, Hyundai is making a fairly brave bet by offering only a four-cylinder engine in the new Sonata. It is a very good four-cylinder, the company's Theta II GDI 2.4 litre with direct fuel injection, variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts, and a variable air intake system to boost mid-range torque.

The primary numbers – 198 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque – handily outpace the four-cylinder competition, and Sonata's power-to-weight ratio, the prime determinant in acceleration performance, leads the class too.

Despite the extra go, Sonata's fuel use is more than competitive too, due at least in part to six-speed transmissions across the board.

Hyundai figures that V6 penetration in this segment runs at less than 10 per cent (except apparently for Accord), and that the powerful four is up to the task for most customers.

The hills east of San Diego offer loads of interesting roads to evaluate a car.

The initial impression inside the Sonata is that it costs more than it does. I found the seats comfortable and supporting, although the non-height-adjustable front passenger seat seems awfully low in the car.

The rear seat is spacious too, the steep roofline not unduly compromising headroom.

On cold fire-up, you will likely notice a slight engine rattle, almost diesel-like. For good reason: direct injection, also featured on diesels, tends to be noisier.

Once warmed up and running at typical driving speeds, the four is reasonably civilized. It does get louder as revs rise, and a four will seldom deliver the smoothness of a six. But you'll hardly ever feel under-gunned, and you are going to enjoy that fuel economy.

The Hyundai-designed and -built automatic works well. A manual six-speed is offered only on the base GL trim level, and none were available for us to try.

The suspension gives the new Sonata a solid feel on the road. It is probably not the softest riding car in the field, but without the benefit of back-to-back comparisons, I'd venture to say Sonata gets the ride-handling balance as good as any, and better than most.

At first blush, it is tempting to say that the new Sonata runs at the very head of this very competitive pack.

At the very least, if you're in the market for a sedan in this class, you will have to park any prejudices you may have developed towards Korean cars and put the new Sonata on your shopping list.

The most important thing about the new Sonata is what it's not--boring. Hyundai has made a habit these days of studying the benchmark in a class of vehicle, and nearly duplicating the style and performance of that car for far less money. The midsize sedan MVP, at least in terms of sales, has traditionally been the Toyota Camry--not the most exciting pony in the barn. So Hyundai could have emulated the Toyota's milquetoast formula. Not so. The new Sonata looks upscale, like a cross between a Mercedes-Benz CLS and a Lexus ES 350. But more importantly, it's roomy, powerful and returns better EPA fuel-economy numbers than most of the midsize sedans in the class. Next time around, Hyundai might actually end up benchmarking itself.

The Sonata's careful Weight Watchers program combined with the six-speed transmissions and slippery 0.28 coefficient of drag means engineers were able to deliver exceptional EPA fuel-economy numbers. Manual Sonatas return 24 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, and automatic ones hit 22 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.

The Drive Sonatas are available in three trim levels, the base GLS that starts at $19,195, the sporty SE at $22,595 and the Limited at $25,295. We spent the majority of our day-long drive in the mountains east of San Diego with a GLS model. The might be the "base" equipment level, but it didn't feel that way. The interior materials, switches and knobs all feel fairly expensive, solidly crafted and look handsome. It's tough to say who offers the most luxurious and upscale interior in this class of car, but the Hyundai is certainly in the running for top honors. The front seats are very comfortable, but at times they felt as though they were perched too high--like we were sitting on top of the Sonata, not in it. The rear seat provides excellent head- and legroom. But a back-to-back seat test with the Accord revealed that the Honda has a more comfy rear seat, thanks to a more generous rake.

It seems as though Hyundai likes the suspension tune of the Honda Accord too. On the highway or in the mountains, the GLS strikes a nice balance between firmness and agility, just like the Accord. You will not mistake the Sonata for a sport sedan when you push it hard, as we did on the tight and twisty road up Mount Palomar, or for the exceedingly fluid and crisp-handling Mazda6. It is docile, obedient and good-natured--even with the stability control turned off. We noticed too, that the Sonata's electric power steering wasn't really noticeable. That's a compliment. Many electric steering systems today feel artificial and don't pickup the nuances of what the front tires are doing in a corner. The Sonata's steering was closer to a traditional system than most. We particularly liked the location of the shifter, skewed close to the driver instead of centered in the car, for quick, manually controlled shifts. The sportier SE trim, with its 18-inch wheels, firmer suspension, paddle shifters and quicker steering, does move the Sonata a few notches closer to Mazda territory.

Hyundai says the Sonata holds a distinct advantage in terms of power-to-weight ratio. Indeed, the 198-hp four-cylinder is the most powerful base engine in the class. The direct-injected engine is smooth and relatively quiet. But in the real world, the Sonata doesn't feel like it leaps and bounds quicker than the competition. The seats of our pants said it was about the same as, yes, a four-cylinder Accord but with a less coarse engine note. On mixed roads and with mixed driving styles (with plenty of hard acceleration) throughout the afternoon, we averaged just north of 29 mpg. Not too shabby.

The Bottom Line Does the Sonata reset the midsize-sedan benchmark? The marketplace and a true comparison test with all its rivals will determine that. But it does seem as though the Sonata's engineers and designers have cherry-picked the best traits of its rivals and improved on them. And with a turbo four-cylinder and hybrid models coming soon, the Sonata is certainly poised to take a big bite out of the most competitive car segment in the U.S.

The Specs Most auto executives get excited about how their new cars clinic in focus groups. John Krafcik, Hyundai USA's President and CEO is most proud of the fact that his new Sonata not only weighs less than most of the competition, but weighs less than the smaller, outgoing Sonata too. That's a difficult task with increasing levels of safety of luxury equipment. The Sonata is not only lighter, but its structure is more robust too, with a 25 percent improvement in torsional stiffness and a 19 percent improvement in bending. Bolted to that chassis are MacPherson struts up front and a multilink suspension at the rear. The sporty SE grade's spring rates are increased by 23 percent in the front and 8 percent in the rear, with damper rates 24 percent in front and 14 percent out back.

The 3200-pound Sonata is only an inch longer than the old model, yet it provides more interior volume than any midsize sedan and at 16.4 cubic feet, nearly matches the Mazda6's trunk space--the class's cargo-hauling leader.

The midsize-sedan powertrain formula has traditionally been to offer a standard four-cylinder engine--which make up the majority of sales--and a V6 for the handful of buyers that want more power. Hyundai will blaze a different path. The new Sonata won't offer a V6. Instead, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, with "well north of 250 hp" according to Krafcik, will become an option this fall.

For now, every Sonata will motor along with a 2.4-liter direct-injected Four paired either to a six-speed manual (on base GLS models only) or a six-speed automatic which will make up around 90 percent of sales. In either case, the Sonata produces 198 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. (Sporty SE models gain dual exhaust, 2 more hp and 2 more lb-ft of torque.) Amazingly, the 2.4-liter, which operates at a rather lofty 11.3:1 compression ratio, does not require premium fuel. The new six-speed automatic, also used in the Tucson crossover weighs about 26 pounds less than the old five-speed.
