Festival da Cachaça, Cultura e Sabores de Paraty 2012

DE 16 A 19 DE AGOSTO DE 2012

Seis alambiques participam do festival, com estandes, são eles: Corisco, Coqueiro, Engenho D’Ouro, Paratiana, Maré Cheia, Pedra Branca. Os visitantes podem apreciar antigos e curiosos sabores como a pinga pura (branquinha), envelhecida, caramelada e de banana, além de aproveitar as comidas típicas do local.

Sendo a única do Brasil a receber a indicação de procedência “Paraty” para a cachaça, em 2007, o produto tem conquistado cada vez mais o mercado brasileiro e internacional. A Associação dos Produtores e Amigos da Cachaça de Paraty (Apacap) comemora o momento e convida paratienses e turistas a participarem de mais uma edição do festival.

HISTÓRIA

A aguardente de cana foi o primeiro produto colonial brasileiro a desbancar similares europeus no mercado internacional. Quase tão antiga quanto o Brasil, a cachaça foi uma conseqüência natural da implantação da agroindústria do açúcar pelos colonizadores portugueses.

Sua produção em Paraty, por diversas vezes proibida em vão, foi de tal modo bem sucedida que a cidade, já em 1600, exportava pinga para a Europa e chegou a ter, no final do século XVII, cerca de 160 engenhos de aguardente em pleno funcionamento.
Sua utilização como escambo garantia a preeminência brasileira no tráfico negreiro. Hoje a cachaça é a bebida mais consumida no Brasil e o terceiro destilado mais consumido no mundo.

Mais que uma real contribuição para a economia do município, que hoje tem na industria do turismo sua principal fonte de recursos, a pinga significa muito para a comunidade paratiense.

Astro de 'Piratas do Caribe', Stellan Skarsgaard filma em Paraty

O ator sueco Stellan Skarsgaard, que fez “Piratas do Caribe” (foto abaixo), gravou sua as primeiras cenas como Villegagnon perto de Paraty, no litoral do Estado do Rio. A sequência - que mostrará o desembarque dos franceses na Baía de Guanabara, em 1551 - faz parte de “Vermelho Brasil”, uma coprodução internacional da Conspiração com a Pampa Films, a Globo Filmes, a RioFilme e a France 2.

Além de Skarsgaard, o elenco conta com o português Joaquim de Almeida (de “Velozes e furiosos 5”) e Giselle Motta, atriz do filme de Selton Mello “O palhaço”.

A superprodução vai ao ar na TV Globo em dois episódios de 90 minutos.

Programação do Rock in Rio 2011

O maior festival de música do país, O Rock in Rio, vai ganhar uma nova edição em 2011. O anúncio oficial reuniu artistas e organizadores do festival. O novo Rock in Rio será em uma área de 150 mil metros quadrados e durante seis dias vai reunir mais de cem atrações nacionais e internacionais. Os dias serão 23, 24, 25 e 30 de setembro, e 1 e 2 de outubro de 2011.

O primeiro Rock in Rio foi em 1985. Houve edições na Espanha e em Portugal, mas há dez anos o festival não acontecia no Brasil. Em breve, programação completa do Rock in Rio 2011. Segundo Ricardo Medina, serão 126 grupos que vão se apresentar nos seis dias do evento.

1º Dia - 23 de setembro de 2011

O Primeiro Dia do Rock in Rio será dedicado a música POP e terá grandes atrações, confira abaixo:

Rock In Rio - Por um Mundo Melhor

O Rock in Rio é o maior festival de música e entretenimento do mundo. Sempre zelando pela qualidade das atrações, o conforto do público e uma infraestrura impecável, é um evento feito para todas as tribos que movimenta a indústria fonográfica, o turismo e a economia.
A ideia vem do empresário brasileiro Roberto Medina, que realizou no mês de janeiro de 1985 sua primeira edição, em plena transição da ditadura para a democracia: o Rock in Rio convidou o Brasil a comemorar a liberdade.
Em suas nove edições, sendo três no Brasil (1985, 1991 e 2001), quatro em Portugal (2004, 2006, 2008 e 2010) e duas na Espanha (2008 e 2010), o Rock in Rio reuniu mais de 5 milhões de pessoas, que aplaudiram ao vivo 656 bandas. Foram mais de 780 horas de música com transmissão para mais de 1 bilhão de telespectadores em 80 países.
Com o mote Por um Mundo Melhor, o Rock in Rio sempre buscou o pioneirismo em seu modelo de negócios, visando uma atuação sustentável e socialmente responsável. Essa atitude vai desde a compensação das emissões de carbono até a escolha de parceiros com atuação socioambiental. O festival procura, além disso, o apoio direto a diversos projetos de sustentabilidade - ao longo dos últimos 10 anos, foram 4.803.357,00 de euros destinados a ações de educação e conscientização ambiental.
Porém, mais importante que essa atuação direta, é a mensagem que o festival busca espalhar: a ideia da união de todos através da música - estamos juntos e nossas pequenas atitudes no dia a dia têm grande impacto sobre o futuro do planeta.

At 8:45 a.m., September 11^th, 2001, the first of two airlines struck the World Trade Center in New York, in the first of a series of coordinated terrorist attacks on the United States. At 9:03, a second plane crashed into a second World Trade Center tower, and exploded. With both buildings ablaze, hundreds of rescue personnel rushed to the scene.
At 9:43 a.m., a third passenger plane crashed into the Pentagon, in the world’s largest office building. At 10:05, the south tower of the World Trade Center collapses, plummeting into the streets below. A massive cloud of dust and debris forms and slowly drifts away from the building. Five minutes later, a portion of the Pentagon collapsed. At 10:28, The World Trade Center's north tower collapses from the top down, releasing a tremendous cloud of debris and smoke. At 10:48 police confirm that a fourth passenger jet had crashed in western Pennsylvania.

Background

In the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil, hijackers crashed passenger planes into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center towers in New York, toppling the 110-story twin towers, killing all aboard the jets and more than 3,000 people on the ground.
Learning from History
In ordinary times, many students question the value and relevance of history. After all, knowledge of history doesn't seem as practical or rewarding as knowledge of medicine or physics or economics. The normal justifications for studying history seem rather vague: to learn about the development of our society and our cultural heritage; to develop the skills characteristic of history as a discipline, such as the ability to undertake research, to read and interpret primary sources, to write clearly and analytically.
But in times of crisis and tragedy we are reminded of the more profound reasons why we study history. We study history:

In Order to Learn from the Mistakes of the Past so We do not Repeat Them.
Because Knowledge of the Past is Essential to Understanding the Present and Shaping the Future.
To Remind Ourselves that Nothing is Inevitable, but is the Product of Human Action and Choices But also of Chance.
To Remember Acts of Heroism and of Villainy.
Because History Contributes to Moral Understanding and Reminds Us about the People who Weathered Adversity and Acted with Courage.

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 underscore the need for historical perspective, and provide the history teacher with an opportunity to remind students of why historical knowledge is indispensable in navigating through present-day challenges and preparing for the future.
What, then, do the events of September 11, 2001 teach us about history?

To Expect the Unexpected

No one predicted on September 10, 2001 that the next day would witness an unprecedented act of terrorism, just as no one in 1941 anticipated an attack on Pearl Harbor and no one in 1991 guessed that the Soviet Union would collapse. Similarly, no one guessed that the outbreak of world war in 1914 would result in the collapse of five empires or the Communist Revolution in Russia.
Today, no one can predict the outcome of the events that took place on September 11, 2001. But history does remind us that consequences of a terrorist attack or an assassination are rarely those that the perpetrators of violence have sought. Those who destroyed the World Trade Center and attacked the Pentagon hoped to demoralize the American population, disrupt our economy, and discredit the United States in the eyes of the world. Despite the destruction they wrought, it seems unimaginable that the terrorists will succeed in those goals.

To Remember that Nothing is Inevitable What happened on September 11, 2001, was not preordained. The tragic events that occurred that day were the product of a train of individual events that might have turned out differently. Nothing better underscores the unpredictability of events better than the actions of the brave passengers on United Airlines Flight, who learned about the attacks on the World Trade Center and sacrificed their own lives in order to prevent their airplane from striking Washington, D.C.

To Understand Why In recent years, we have come to recognize that most acts of aggression and fanaticism in the contemporary world are rooted in a sense of historical grievance. In areas as diverse as the Balkans, Israel and Palestine, Northern Ireland, and Zimbabwe memories of the past are strong and fuel contemporary conflicts. History does not have the power to resolve those conflicts, but it can help us understand why antagonisms are so deeply rooted.

To Prevent History from Repeating Itself Over time, we will understand why the intelligence apparatus failed to uncover the terrorist plot and why our security systems failed to prevent the attacks. As we learn from past mistakes, we may be able to prevent similar acts of terror from recurring in the future.
To Remember

History is our collective memory. It is an indelible record of acts of bravery and of treachery, of leadership and of cowardice. We study history in order to keep these memories alive.

Festa para Rogério tem ônibus 'carregado', balão gigante e placa especial

A movimentação no estádio é grande desde o início da tarde, situação que complica o trânsito na região. A expectativa é que cerca de 60 mil torcedores compareçam no estádio

Balão gigante homenageou Rogério Ceni, que nesta quarta completa 1000 jogos pelo clube

A quarta-feira é toda de Rogério Ceni. O goleiro são-paulino foi homenageado de todas as maneiras antes e também depois de a bola rolar no Morumbi para o confronto diante do Atlético-MG, que marca 1000 jogos do atleta com a camisa tricolor. Balão gigante, ônibus praticamente carregado pela torcida na chegada ao estádio e placa pelo feito foram algumas das imagens vistas.

Logo de frente ao portão principal da arena tricolor, um balão gigante lembrava a marca apenas alcançada na história do futebol pelos também brasileiros Pelé, pelo Santos, e Roberto Dinamite, pelo Vasco, e pelo zagueiro irlandês Noel Bailie, hoje já ex-boleiro e com 40 anos, este defendendo o Linfield, da Irlanda do Norte.

Quando a delegação tricolor chegou ao Morumbi, um frenesi tomou conta do local. A torcida cercou totalmente o ônibus que trazia os jogadores e praticamente colocou o veículo para dentro do estádio, com muitos gritos e agitação de bandeiras.

Já dentro de campo, ainda minutos antes de a partida começar, Rogério recebeu das mãos do presidente do clube, Juvenal Juvêncio, e de Laudo Natel, ex-mandatário tricolor, uma placa comemorativa pelos 1000 jogos com a camisa do time.

Nas arquibancadas, lotadas, já que os pouco mais de 60 mil ingressos foram totalmente vendidos, a torcida fazia sua parte gritando o nome do goleiro e cantando uma tradicional música que coloca Rogério como o melhor arqueiro do Brasil. Com a bola rolando, cada vez que ele pegava na bola, mais manifestação de apoio.

FESTA DE NOSSA SENHORA DOS REMÉDIOS

História

A devoção a Nossa Senhora dos Remédios foi introduzida em Portugal por religiosos franceses da Ordem Hospitalar da Santíssima Trindade, que estiveram em Lisboa no início do século XIII. A finalidade desta Ordem era a Redenção dos cativos no oriente e sua padroeira era Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Esta confraria se espalhou pela Europa, especialmente na Península Ibérica. Até o século XVIII já havia libertado 900.000 prisioneiros.

Os irmãos da Santíssima Trindade trouxeram para o Brasil a mesma devoção, erguendo capelas em sua honra em várias províncias do Nordeste e nas regiões barrocas de Minas Gerais. No entanto, os santuários mais famosos se encontram em Paraty, São Paulo e Fernando de Noronha.

Por ocasião da fundação do povoado, no final do século XVI, ergueu-se uma pequena capela dedicada a São Roque sobre o atual Morro do Forte, onde então se encontravam construídas as primeiras moradias. Porém, em 1646, Dona Maria Jácome de Melo doou a área situada entre os rios Perequê-açu e Patitiba para a construção do novo povoado, surgindo assim a “Vila de Paraty”, exigindo que nele se construísse uma capela dedicada a Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, santa de sua devoção.

Esta primeira capela, de pau a pique, foi demolida em 1668 e, em seu lugar, construída uma igreja maior, de pedra e cal, obra que só terminou em 1712. Contava a nova Matriz com sete altares, sendo duas capelas internas. Em l787, por ser a igreja pequena para a população, cerca de 2.700 pessoas, foram iniciadas as obras de um novo templo em local próximo ao antigo. Essa obra, por ser grandiosa, custou ao povo grande soma de dinheiro e, por falta de ajuda financeira, teve sua construção paralisada várias vezes. Custeou e administrou sua finalização a piedosa senhora paratiense, Dona Geralda Maria da Silva, que por isto recebeu do Imperador Dom Pedro II o título de “Dona do Paço”. Seu pai, Roque José da Silva, encontra-se sepultado sob a escada do coro desta igreja.

A sete de setembro de 1873 foi a igreja entregue ao culto público, precedendo à sua benção uma procissão em que se transladaram as imagens deste Templo que estavam guardadas na Igreja Santa Rita, a qual serviu de Matriz no período da construção atual, para a nova Matriz, costume que se conserva até hoje, por ocasião da festa da padroeira.

De estilo neoclássico, sobressai por sua imponência e apresenta a sobriedade e o despojamento característicos deste estilo, em que as grandes massas se contrapõem ao ritmo dos vãos. Destacam-se nesta igreja a imponência da edificação, suas torres inacabadas, as imagens das antigas capelas, os frontais de altar das capelas internas do Século XVIII e a pia batismal do Século XVII. São dignas de especial atenção as imagens da Semana Santa, em tamanho natural, de vestir ou de roca. Detalhe curioso são as torres inacabadas e o fundo da edificação por terminar. Acredita-se que isso aconteceu não só pela falta de recursos e mão-de-obra escrava, mas também porque a igreja teria afundado, inclinando-se perigosamente para frente, devido ao seu peso e à inconsistência do terreno.

A Igreja possui planta de traçado característico do século XVIII, com dois corredores laterais ligados à nave central. Fachada dividida por pilastras em cantaria e cunhais do mesmo material. Frontão de linhas retas com óculo central e cruz de ferro. Clarestórios em arco, típico do século XIX. Destaque, entre outras, para a imagem de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, possivelmente de origem portuguesa, do século XVIII, que fica no nicho central do altar-mor ladeada pela imagem de Santana e São Joaquim, Senhor dos Passos com braços articulados, e o arcaz da sacristia em jacarandá maciço.

Em 1863, o imperador D. Pedro II em visita a Paraty registrou em seu diário sobre essa igreja: “É grande e faltam torres e consistório. Pedem auxílio (financeiro) à província.”

Entronizada dentro do nicho fica a imagem do Senhor dos Passos, utilizada na Procissão do Encontro na Semana Santa.

4) Altar de São Francisco de Paula – cujo atributo do santo no retábulo é composto por resplendor aplicado, em madeira entalhada com raionado e cajado, com um círculo ao centro com a inscrição “CHARITAS”. Possui entronizada a imagem de São Francisco de Paula, em madeira policromada do século XVIII.

5) Batistério – possui teto com pintura decorativa, uma pia batismal do século XVII, que pertenceu, provavelmente, à igreja anterior.

6) Altar de São Roque – cujo atributo do santo no retábulo é simbolizado por um chapéu e um cajado do qual pende uma cabaça. Possui entronizada a imagem de São Roque em madeira policromada/dourada do século XVIII.

7) Capela do Sagrado Coração de Jesus – possui no retábulo um resplendor aplicado, em madeira entalhada com os símbolos eucarísticos (cálice e hóstia). Possui entronizada imagem do Sagrado Coração de Jesus em madeira policromada/dourada do século XX. Esta capela era, anteriormente, dedicada à adoração perpétua ao Santíssimo Sacramento.

8) Púlpito – em madeira policromada.

9) Altar de Nossa Senhora do Terço – cujo atributo da santa no retábulo é composto por resplendor aplicado, em madeira entalhada com rainonado e nuvens tendo ao centro um anagrama “AM” simbolizando Ave Maria. Possui entronizada a imagem de Nossa Senhora do Terço em madeira policromada/dourada do século XVIII, e duas imagens de roca: São Francisco de Assis e São Domingos de Gusmão.

Destacam-se nesta Igreja a imponência da edificação, suas torres inacabadas, as imagens das antigas capelas, o retábulo das capelas internas do século XVIII e a pia batismal, do século XVII.

Sua planta tem traçado característico do século XVIII; nave única e dois corredores laterais compartimentados e ligados à nave central.

São dignos da especial atenção as imagens da Semana Santa, de vestir e de roca.Entre as imagens destacam-se a de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, provavelmente adquirida na Espanha no século XIX, e as imagens da Via Sacra , todas em tamanho natural

Um detalhe curioso são as torres inacabadas e o fundo da edificação por terminar. Acredita-se que isso aconteceu não só pela falta de recursos e mão-de-obra escrava, mas também porque a Igreja teria afundado, inclinando-se perigosamente para a frente, devido a inconsistência do terreno onde foi construída.

A Matriz era a igreja freqüentada pela burguesia branca de Paraty. As irmandades do Santíssimo Sacramento, de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de São Roque e de São Miguel das Almas já funcionaram ao lado da Confraria do Terço.

Em São Paulo, a igreja dos Remédios, com seu frontispício de azulejos e sua história recheada de lendas, estava situada na praça João Mendes. Era o refúgio dos escravos perseguidos e, nos últimos tempos do Império, o reduto preferido dos abolicionistas. Em 1941 ela foi demolida para o alargamento da praça, conhecida antigamente como Largo dos Remédios.

A única igreja existente na ilha de Fernando de Noronha é consagrada à Senhora dos Remédios, construída em estilo colonial português em 1737, logo depois da expulsão dos franceses. Fica próxima à sede do governo da Vila dos Remédios, sob a proteção, hoje simbólica, do forte do mesmo nome.

A festa de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios é uma festa secular que se realiza anualmente, no domingo anterior à Ascensão, na cidade de Tortosendo, em Portugal. Por ser uma celebração bem peculiar, com um histórico pitoresco, deter-nos-emos sobre a mesma, apresentando informações conseguidas na internet:

Os Tortosendenses continuam a ser ardorosos devotos, acorrendo em grande número à sua festa que se realiza, anualmente, no domingo anterior à Ascensão, situada num local bem aprazível e de onde se pode desfrutar um dos mais belos panoramas da região. Mas muitos são ainda aqueles que lembram, com saudade, o tempo em que a Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios se realizava em quinta-feira da Ascensão, juntando a essa saudade uma certa mágoa pelo fato da festa ter mudado de dia, ainda antes da Ascensão ter deixado de ser dia santo de guarda, não encontrando assim justificação aceitável.

Todavia, a celebração da Festa nesta data era uma situação excepcionalíssima no país, não era um direito adquirido pelos Tortosendenses, já que um dia destinado no calendário litúrgico cristão a uma celebração tão importante como a subida de Cristo ao Céu, não deveria ser partilhada com qualquer outra "para que não perdesse de forma alguma o seu brilho". Assim sendo, todos os anos algum tempo antes da Festa, ia o Prior de então, reverendo Padre Ardérius, com elementos da comissão das Festas, pedir uma autorização especial ao Senhor Bispo da Guarda, "com o argumento de que era tradição a realização da festa nesse dia" e, ano a ano, acedia o digníssimo Prelado, correspondendo, desta forma, ao desejo do povo do Tortosendo.

Mas num determinado ano o senhor Prior, invocando "que a lei deveria ser cumprida que em algum ano havia que começar", resolveu não ir à Guarda e decidiu que a festa passasse para o domingo seguinte. Não aceitou bem a Comissão de Festas tal decisão e demitiu-se, não obstando, no entanto, a que a mesma se celebrasse, por iniciativa do Pároco. Estranhou o povo tal mudança e estranhou, mais ainda, o fato de, contrariamente ao que acontecera, os campos e pinhais à volta da Capela estarem vedados, argumentando os proprietários que "era dos usos e costumes da região que as sementeiras se iniciassem logo após a Ascensão", pelo que os trabalhos já haviam sido iniciados, nesse ano. Facilmente esta dificuldade foi ultrapassada nos anos seguintes, pois passou, então, a Festa a ocorrer, no domingo anterior à Ascensão, para que os romeiros pudessem merendar livremente nos campos e pinhais circundantes.

Para dar "mais pompa e luzimento" à Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios constituiu-se, cerca de 1940, uma Comissão que se compunha de um Juiz, um Tesoureiro, Gerentes e outros colaboradores e durante vários anos não sofreu grandes alterações.

Tinha a comissão a seu cargo, toda a organização da Festa e ainda um trabalho muito cuidadoso, o da "atualização automática do Caderno dos Mordomos e Mordomas de Nossa Senhora": havia a preocupação de inscrever imediatamente as crianças que nasciam ou aquelas outras pessoas que vinham de novo para o Tortosendo, sendo assim nomeados mordomos ou mordomas, chegando-se a 231 e 188 respectivamente, num total de 419, número bastante representativo.

Entretanto já perto da Festa, a Comissão enviava-lhes uma carta-circular, apelando à sua generosidade, de modo a angariar mais fundos.

Alguns dias antes, era Nossa Senhora trazida da sua ermida, sem procissão, até à Igreja Paroquial, onde o andor era então, enfeitado com flores artificiais, sedas e cetins nas cores branca e azul, os quais haviam sido cuidadosamente guardados de um ano para outro. E era imediatamente a seguir à celebração da Missa da Hora que se dava início à única Procissão, com as imagens de Nossa Senhora e de S. José. Abriam-na dois altos e pesados estandartes, um de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios e outro do Santíssimo, cada um deles levado por um homem bem possante, coadjuvado por mais dois companheiros que, segurando em cordas que pendiam lateralmente do alto, os ajudavam a equilibrar, todos eles envergando as opas pertencentes à Comissão, que ficavam ao longo do ano à guarda do Juiz.

Os Anjos espalhavam-se pela Procissão, mas sempre à frente da Nossa Senhora. Atrás deste andor seguiam pessoas com suas ofertas de: galinhas, coelhos, pombos, pães-de-ló que "eram dadas pelas pessoas que viviam bem e por todas as que faziam promessas por doenças, quando os filhos iam para a tropa ou por qualquer afronta". Também já se cumpriam promessas indo descalço ou levando velas da altura respectiva. "A procissão do dia era assim imponente". Na Capela havia missa cantada com três padres e sermão, e fazia-se a leitura dos nomes dos mordomos e mordomas.

Somente em plena segunda Guerra, e com a intenção muito especial de se pedir pela paz, é que se resolveu fazer uma Procissão das Velas, à noite, na véspera da festa, tendo vindo Nossa Senhora em procissão o que aconteceu pela primeira vez, mas veio afinal a tornar-se na expressão máxima da devoção a Nossa Senhora. Nessa ocasião, e pela primeira vez, "o andor foi enfeitado com flores naturais (exclusivamente novelos)" que se pediram em várias casas. Nesta Procissão as senhoras vinham em duas filas, com velas e terminava com o andor de Nossa Senhora e os homens, em grande número seguiam atrás cantando.

Michael Joseph Jackson^[1] (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, dancer, singer-songwriter, musician, and philanthropist. Referred to as the King of Pop, Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by Guinness World Records. His contribution to music, dance, and fashion, along with a much-publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene along with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5, then the Jacksons in 1964, and began his solo career in 1971.
In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller", were credited with transforming the medium into an art form and a promotional tool, and the popularity of these videos helped to bring the relatively new television channel MTV to fame. Videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream" made him a staple on MTV in the 1990s. Through stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style have influenced numerous hip hop, pop, contemporary R&B, and rock artists.
Jackson's 1982 album Thriller is the best-selling album of all time. His other records, including Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), also rank among the world's best-selling. Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He was also inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame as the first (and currently only) dancer from the world of pop and rock 'n' roll. Some of his other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records; 13 Grammy Awards (as well as the Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award); 26 American Music Awards (more than any other artist, including the "Artist of the Century"); 13 number-one singles in the United States in his solo career (more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era); and the estimated sale of over 750 million records worldwide. Jackson won hundreds of awards, which have made him the most-awarded recording artist in the history of popular music.
Jackson was a notable humanitarian and philanthropist, donating and raising hundreds of millions of dollars for beneficial causes and supporting more than 39 charities. According to David Winters, Jackson also donated tens of millions of dollars to many children’s charities anonymously, and spent a lot of his time visiting seriously ill children tirelessly going from hospital to hospital meeting these children just to brighten up their lives. When Jackson finished the visits he would ask the hospital nurses and the doctors what was needed at the hospital in terms of equipment for the children and would then make anonymous donations to the hospital to purchase expensive equipment or whatever else was needed.^[2]
Aspects of Jackson's personal life, including his changing appearance, personal relationships, and behavior, have generated controversy. In 1993, he was accused of child sexual abuse, but the case was settled out of court and no formal charges were brought. In 2005, he was tried and acquitted of further sexual abuse allegations and several other charges after the jury ruled him not guilty on all counts. While preparing for his concert series This Is It, Jackson died of acute propofol intoxication on June 25, 2009, after suffering from cardiac arrest. Before his death, Jackson had been administered drugs including propofol and lorazepam. The Los Angeles County Coroner declared his death a homicide, and his personal physician pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter. Jackson's death triggered a global outpouring of grief, and as many as one billion people around the world reportedly watched his public memorial service on live television. In March 2010, Sony Music Entertainment signed a $250 million deal with Jackson's estate to retain distribution rights to his recordings until 2017, and to release seven posthumous albums over the decade following his death.

Life and career

Early life and The Jackson 5 (1958–1975)

Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, the eighth of ten children in an African American working-class family who lived in a small 3-room house in Gary, Indiana,^[3] an industrial city near Chicago. His mother, Katherine Esther Scruse, was a devout Jehovah's Witness, and his father, Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson, was a steel mill worker who performed with an R&B band called The Falcons. Jackson had three sisters: Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet, and five brothers: Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Randy.^[4] A sixth brother, Brandon, died shortly after birth.^[5]
Jackson had a troubled relationship with his father, Joe.^[6]^[7]^[8] Joseph acknowledged in 2003 that he regularly whipped Jackson as a boy.^[8] Jackson stated that he was physically and emotionally abused during incessant rehearsals, though he also credited his father's strict discipline with playing a large role in his success.^[6] Jackson first spoke openly about his childhood abuse in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, broadcast in February 1993. He admitted that he had often cried from loneliness and he would vomit on the sight of his father. Jackson's father was also said to have verbally abused Jackson, saying that he had a fat nose on numerous occasions.^[9] In fact, Michael Jackson's deep dissatisfaction with his appearance, his nightmares and chronic sleep problems, his tendency to remain hyper-compliant especially with his father, and to remain child-like throughout his adult life are in many ways consistent with the effects of this chronic maltreatment he endured as a young child.^[10]
In an interview with Martin Bashir, later included in the 2003 broadcast of Living with Michael Jackson, Jackson acknowledged that his father hurt him when he was a child, but was nonetheless a "genius", as he admitted his father's strict discipline played a huge role in his success. When Bashir dismissed the positive remark and continued asking about beatings, Jackson put his hand over his face and objected to the questions. He recalled that Joseph sat in a chair with a belt in his hand as he and his siblings rehearsed, and that "if you didn't do it the right way, he would tear you up, really get you".^[11]^[12]
In 1964, Michael and Marlon joined the Jackson Brothers—a band formed by brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine—as backup musicians playing congas and tambourine. Jackson later began performing backup vocals and dancing. When he was eight, Jackson began sharing the lead vocals with his older brother Jermaine, and the group's name was changed to The Jackson 5.^[4] The band toured the Midwest extensively from 1966 to 1968, frequently performing at a string of black clubs known as the "chitlin' circuit", where they often opened stripteases and other adult acts. In 1966, they won a major local talent show with renditions of Motown hits and James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)", led by Michael.^[13]
The Jackson 5 recorded several songs, including "Big Boy", for the local record label Steeltown in 1967, before signing with Motown Records in 1968.^[4] Rolling Stone magazine later described the young Michael as "a prodigy" with "overwhelming musical gifts," writing that he "quickly emerged as the main draw and lead singer."^[14] The group set a chart record when its first four singles ("I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save", and "I'll Be There") peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.^[4] Between 1972 and 1975, Michael released four solo studio albums with Motown, among them Got to Be There and Ben, released as part of the Jackson 5 franchise, and producing successful singles such as "Got to Be There", "Ben", and a remake of Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin". The group's sales began declining in 1973, and the band members chafed under Motown's strict refusal to allow them creative control or input. Although they scored several top 40 hits, including the top 5 disco single "Dancing Machine" and the top 20 hit "I Am Love", the Jackson 5 left Motown in 1975.^[15]

Move to Epic and Off the Wall (1975–81)

In June 1975, the Jackson 5 signed with Epic Records, a subsidiary of CBS Records^[15] and renamed themselves the Jacksons. Younger brother Randy formally joined the band around this time, while Jermaine left to pursue a solo career.^[16] They continued to tour internationally, releasing six more albums between 1976 and 1984, during which Michael was the lead songwriter, writing hits such as "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", "This Place Hotel," and "Can You Feel It".^[13] In 1978, he starred as the scarecrow in the musical, The Wiz, a box-office disaster. It was here that he teamed up with Quincy Jones, who was arranging the film's musical score. Jones agreed to produce Jackson's next solo album, Off the Wall.^[17] In 1979, Jackson broke his nose during a complex dance routine. His subsequent rhinoplasty was not a complete success; he complained of breathing difficulties that would affect his career. He was referred to Dr. Steven Hoefflin, who performed Jackson's second rhinoplasty and subsequent operations.^[18]
Jones and Jackson produced the Off the Wall album together. Songwriters for the album included Jackson, Rod Temperton, Stevie Wonder, and Paul McCartney. Released in 1979, it was the first solo album to generate four U.S. top 10 hits, including the chart-topping singles "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You".^[19]^[20] It reached number three on the Billboard 200 and eventually sold over 20 million copies worldwide.^[21] In 1980, Jackson won three awards at the American Music Awards for his solo efforts: Favorite Soul/R&B Album, Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist, and Favorite Soul/R&B Single for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough".^[22]^[23] That year, he also won Billboard Year-End for Top Black Artist and Top Black Album and a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, also for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough".^[19] Jackson again won at the American Music Awards in 1981 for Favorite Soul/R&B Album and Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist.^[24] Despite its commercial success, Jackson felt Off the Wall should have made a much bigger impact, and was determined to exceed expectations with his next release.^[25] In 1980, he secured the highest royalty rate in the music industry: 37 percent of wholesale album profit.^[26]

Thriller and Motown 25 (1982–83)

In 1982, Jackson contributed the song "Someone In the Dark" to the storybook for the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial; the record won a Grammy for Best Recording for Children in 1984. In the same year he won another seven Grammys and eight American Music Awards (including the Award of Merit, the youngest artist to win it), making him the most awarded in one night for both award shows.^[27]^[28] These awards were thanks to the Thriller album, released in late 1982, which was 1983's best-selling album worldwide^[29]^[30] and became the best-selling album of all time in the United States,^[31] as well as the best-selling album of all time worldwide, selling an estimated 110 million copies so far.^[32] The album topped the Billboard 200 chart for 37 weeks and was in the top 10 of the 200 for 80 consecutive weeks. It was the first album to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles, including "Billie Jean", "Beat It," and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'."^[33] Thriller was certified for 29 million shipments by the RIAA, giving it Double Diamond status in the United States. The album won also another Grammy for Best Engineered Recording – Non Classical in 1984, awarding Bruce Swedien for his work.^[34] Jackson's attorney John Branca noted that Jackson had the highest royalty rate in the music industry at that point: approximately $2 for every album sold. He was also making record-breaking profits from sales of his recordings. The videocassette of the documentary The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller sold over 350,000 copies in a few months. The era saw the arrival of novelties like dolls modeled after Michael Jackson, which appeared in stores in May 1984 at a price of $12.^[35] Biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli writes that, "Thriller stopped selling like a leisure item—like a magazine, a toy, tickets to a hit movie—and started selling like a household staple."^[36] In 1985, The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller won a Grammy for Best Music Video, Longform.^[27] In December 2009, the music video for "Thriller" was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, "Thriller" is the first music video ever to be inducted.^[37]^[38]^[39]
Time described Jackson's influence at that point as "Star of records, radio, rock video. A one-man rescue team for the music business. A songwriter who sets the beat for a decade. A dancer with the fanciest feet on the street. A singer who cuts across all boundaries of taste and style and color too".^[35] The New York Times wrote that, "in the world of pop music, there is Michael Jackson and there is everybody else".^[40]
In March 1983, Jackson reunited with his brothers for a legendary live performance which was taped for a Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever television special. The show aired on May 16, 1983, to an audience of 47 million viewers, and featured the Jacksons and a number of other Motown stars. It is best remembered for Jackson's solo performance of "Billie Jean". Wearing a distinctive black sequin jacket and golf glove decorated with rhinestones, he debuted his signature dance move, the moonwalk, which former Soul Train dancer and Shalamar member, Jeffrey Daniel had taught him three years before. The Jacksons' performance drew comparisons to Elvis Presley's and The Beatles' appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.^[41] Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times later wrote, "The moonwalk that he made famous is an apt metaphor for his dance style. How does he do it? As a technician, he is a great illusionist, a genuine mime. His ability to keep one leg straight as he glides while the other bends and seems to walk requires perfect timing."^[42]

Pepsi, "We Are the World" and business career (1984–85)

On January 27, 1984, Michael and other members of the Jacksons filmed a Pepsi Cola commercial, overseen by executive Phil Dusenberry,^[43] from ad agency BBDO and Pepsi's Worldwide Creative Director, Alan Pottasch at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. In front of a full house of fans during a simulated concert, pyrotechnics accidentally set Jackson's hair on fire. He suffered second-degree burns to his scalp. Jackson underwent treatment to hide the scars on his scalp, and he also had his third rhinoplasty shortly thereafter.^[18] Jackson never recovered from this injury. Pepsi settled out of court, and Jackson donated his $1.5 million settlement to the Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, California, which now has a "Michael Jackson Burn Center" in honor of his donation.^[44] Dusenberry later recounted the episode in his memoir, Then We Set His Hair on Fire: Insights and Accidents from a Hall of Fame Career in Advertising.
On May 14, 1984, Jackson was invited to the White House to receive an award from President Ronald Reagan for his support of charities that helped people overcome alcohol and drug abuse.^[45] Jackson won eight awards during the Grammys that year. Unlike later albums, Thriller did not have an official tour to promote it, but the 1984 Victory Tour, headlined by The Jacksons, showcased much of Jackson's new solo material to more than two million Americans. He donated all the funds (around $8 million) raised from the Victory Tour to charity.^[46] He also co-wrote the charity single "We Are the World" in 1985 with Lionel Richie, which was released worldwide to aid the poor in the U.S. and Africa. It became one of the best-selling singles of all time, with nearly 30 million copies sold and millions of dollars donated to famine relief. In 1986, "We Are the World" won four Grammys (one for Jackson for Song of the Year). American Music Award directors removed the charity song from the competition because they felt it would be inappropriate, but recognised it with two special honors (one for the creation of the song and one for the USA for Africa idea). They are the only AMAs that Jackson won as non-solo artist.^[47]^[48]^[49]^[50]

In 1984, ATV Music Publishing, which had the copyrights to nearly 4000 songs, including the Northern Songs catalog that contained the majority of the Lennon/McCartney compositions recorded by The Beatles, was put up for sale by Robert Holmes à Court.^[51] Jackson had become interested in owning music catalogs after working with Paul McCartney in the early 1980s: Jackson had learned McCartney made approximately $40 million a year from other people's songs.^[52] In 1981,^[53] McCartney was offered the ATV music catalog for £20 million ($40 million).^[52]^[54] According to McCartney, he contacted Yoko Ono about making a joint purchase by splitting the cost equally at £10 million each, but Ono thought they could buy it for £5 million each.^[52]^[54] When they were unable to make the joint purchase, McCartney let the offer fall through, not wanting to be the sole owner of the Beatles' songs.^[53]^[54]
According to a negotiator for Holmes à Court in the 1984 sale, "We had given Paul McCartney first right of refusal but Paul didn't want it at that time."^[55] Also, an attorney for McCartney assured Jackson's attorney, John Branca, that McCartney was not interested in bidding: McCartney reportedly said "It's too pricey"^[52]^[53] But there were several other companies and investors bidding. In September 1984, Jackson was first informed about the sale by Branca and sent a bid of $46 million on November 20, 1984.^[51] Jackson's agents thought they had a deal several times, but encountered new bidders or new areas of debate.^[51] In May 1985, Jackson's team walked away from talks after having spent over $1 million on four months of due diligence and on the negotiations.^[51]
In June 1985, Jackson and Branca learned that Charles Koppelman's and Marty Bandier's The Entertainment Co. had made a tentative agreement with Holmes à Court to buy ATV Music for $50 million.^[51] But in early August, Holmes à Court's team contacted Jackson and talks resumed. Jackson raised his bid to $47.5 million and it was accepted because he could close the deal more quickly, having already completed due diligence of ATV Music.^[51] He also agreed to visit Holmes à Court in Australia, where he would appear on the Channel Seven Perth Telethon.^[51]^[55] Jackson's purchase of ATV Music was finalized August 10, 1985.^[51]

Appearance, tabloids, Bad and films (1986–87)

Jackson's skin had been a medium-brown color for the entire duration of his youth, but starting in the mid 1980s, it gradually grew paler. The change gained widespread media coverage, including rumors that he was bleaching his skin.^[56] According to J. Randy Taraborrelli's biography, in 1986, Jackson was diagnosed with vitiligo and lupus; the vitiligo partially lightened his skin, and the lupus was in remission; both illnesses made him sensitive to sunlight. The treatments he used for his condition further lightened his skin tone, and, with the application of pancake makeup to even out blotches, he could appear very pale.^[57] Jackson was also diagnosed with vitiligo in his autopsy.^[58] Several surgeons speculated that he had undergone various nasal surgeries, a forehead lift, thinned lips, and cheekbone surgery—although Jackson denied this and insisted that he only had surgery on his nose.^[59] Jackson claimed that he had only two rhinoplasties and no other surgery on his face, although at one point he mentioned having a dimple created in his chin.^[60] Jackson lost weight in the early 1980s because of a change in diet and a desire for "a dancer's body".^[60] Witnesses reported that he was often dizzy and speculated that he was suffering from anorexia nervosa; periods of weight loss would become a recurring problem later in life.^[61]
During the course of his treatment, Jackson made two close friends: his dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein, and Klein's nurse Debbie Rowe. Rowe eventually became Jackson's second wife and the mother of his two eldest children. Long before becoming romantically involved with her, Jackson relied heavily on Rowe for emotional support. He also relied heavily on Klein, for medical and business advice.^[62]

Jackson became the subject of increasingly sensational reports. In 1986, the tabloids ran a story claiming that Jackson slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to slow the aging process; he was pictured lying down in a glass box. Although the claim was untrue, according to tabloid reports that are widely cited, Jackson had disseminated the fabricated story himself.^[63]^[64] When Jackson bought a chimpanzee called Bubbles from a laboratory, he was reported to be increasingly detached from reality.^[65] It was reported that Jackson had offered to buy the bones of Joseph Merrick (the "elephant man") and although untrue, Jackson did not deny the story.^[63]^[64] Although initially he saw these stories as opportunities for publicity, he stopped leaking untruths to the press as they became more sensational. Consequently the media began making up their own stories.^[64]^[66]^[67] These reports became embedded in the public consciousness, inspiring the nickname "Wacko Jacko," which Jackson came to despise.^[68] Responding to the gossip, Jackson remarked to Taraborrelli:

Why not just tell people I'm an alien from Mars. Tell them I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight. They'll believe anything you say, because you're a reporter. But if I, Michael Jackson, were to say, "I'm an alien from Mars and I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight," people would say, "Oh, man, that Michael Jackson is nuts. He's cracked up. You can't believe a single word that comes out of his mouth."^[69]

Jackson collaborated with Francis Ford Coppola on the 17-minute 3-D film Captain EO, which debuted in September 1986 at both the original Disneyland and at EPCOT in Florida, and in March 1987 at Tokyo Disneyland. The $30 million movie was a popular attraction at all three parks. A Captain EO attraction was later featured at Euro Disneyland after that park opened in 1992. All four parks' Captain EO installations stayed open well into the 1990s: Paris' installation was the last one to close, in 1998.^[70] The attraction would later return to Disneyland in 2010 after Jackson's death.^[71]
In 1987, Jackson disassociated himself from the Jehovah's Witnesses, in response to their disapproval of the Thriller video.^[72] With the industry expecting another major hit, Jackson's first album in five years, Bad (1987), was highly anticipated.^[73] It did not top Thriller as a commercial or artistic triumph, but Bad was still a substantial success in its own right.
The Bad album spawned seven hit singles in the U.S., five of which ("I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana") reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. This was a record for most number one Hot 100 singles from any one album, including Thriller.^[74] Although the title track's video was arguably derivative of the video for the earlier single "Beat It", the "Bad" video still proved to be one of Jackson's iconic moments. It was a gritty but colorful epic set against the backdrop of the New York City Subway system, with costuming and choreography inspired by West Side Story. As of 2008, the album had sold 30 million copies worldwide.^[75] Thanks to the Bad album, Bruce Swedien and Humberto Gatica won one Grammy in 1988 for Best Engineered Recording – Non Classical and Michael Jackson won one Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form for "Leave Me Alone" in 1989.^[27]^[34] In the same year, Jackson won an Award of Achievement at the American Music Awards because Bad is the first album ever to generate five number one singles in the US, the first album to top in 25 countries and the best-selling album worldwide in 1987 and in 1988.^[76]^[77]^[78]^[79] In 1988, "Bad" won an American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Single.^[80]
The Bad World Tour began on September 12 that year, finishing on January 14, 1989.^[81] In Japan alone, the tour had 14 sellouts and drew 570,000 people, nearly tripling the previous record of 200,000 in a single tour.^[82] Jackson broke a Guinness World Record when 504,000 people attended seven sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium. He performed a total of 123 concerts to an audience of 4.4 million people. The Bad Tour turned out to be the last of Jackson's concert tours to include shows in the continental United States, although later tours did make it to Hawaii.

Autobiography, changing appearance and Neverland (1988–1990)

In 1988, Jackson released his first and only autobiography, Moonwalk, which took four years to complete and sold 200,000 copies.^[83] Jackson wrote about his childhood, The Jackson 5, and the abuse he had suffered.^[84] He also wrote about his facial appearance, saying he had had two rhinoplastic surgeries and a dimple created in his chin.^[60] He attributed much of the change in the structure of his face to puberty, weight loss, a strict vegetarian diet, a change in hair style, and stage lighting.^[60] Moonwalk reached the top position on The New York Times best sellers' list.^[85] The musician then released a film called Moonwalker, which featured live footage and short films that starred Jackson and Joe Pesci. The film was originally intended to be released to theaters but due to financial issues, the film was released direct-to-video. It saw a theatrical release in Germany, though. It debuted atop the Billboard Top Music Video Cassette chart, staying there for 22 weeks. It was eventually knocked off the top spot by Michael Jackson: The Legend Continues.^[86]
In March 1988, Jackson purchased land near Santa Ynez, California, to build Neverland Ranch at a cost of $17 million. He installed Ferris wheels, a menagerie, and a movie theater on the 2,700-acre (11 km²) property. A security staff of 40 patrolled the grounds. In 2003, it was valued at approximately $100 million.^[14]^[87] In 1989, his annual earnings from album sales, endorsements, and concerts was estimated at $125 million for that year alone.^[88] Shortly afterwards, he became the first Westerner to appear in a television ad in the Soviet Union.^[86]
His success resulted in his being dubbed the "King of Pop".^[89]^[90]^[91]^[92] The nickname was popularized by Elizabeth Taylor when she presented him with the Soul Train Heritage Award in 1989, proclaiming him "the true king of pop, rock and soul."^[93] President George H. W. Bush designated him the White House's "Artist of the Decade".^[94] From 1985 to 1990, he donated $500,000 to the United Negro College Fund, and all of the profits from his single "Man in the Mirror" went to charity.^[95]^[96] Jackson's live rendition of "You Were There" at Sammy Davis Jr.'s 60th birthday celebration received an Emmy nomination.^[86]

Dangerous, Heal the World Foundation and Super Bowl XXVII (1991–93)

In March 1991, Jackson renewed his contract with Sony for $65 million, a record-breaking deal at the time,^[97] displacing Neil Diamond's renewal contract with Columbia Records.^[98] He released his eighth album Dangerous in 1991. As of 2008, Dangerous had shipped seven million copies in the U.S. and had sold 32 million copies worldwide. The Dangerous album was co-produced by Teddy Riley, one of the pioneers of "new jack swing" which convinced Michael to feature a rapper on his album for the first time, the act worked and it turned out to be the best-selling album associated with that movement.^[99]^[100]^[101] In the United States, the album's first single "Black or White" was its biggest hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining there for seven weeks, with similar chart performances worldwide.^[102] The album's second single "Remember the Time" spent eight weeks in the top five in the United States, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.^[103] At the end of 1992, Dangerous was awarded 1992's best-selling album worldwide and "Black or White" was awarded 1992's best-selling single worldwide at the Billboard Music Awards. Additionally, he won an award as best-selling artist of the '80s.^[104] In 1993, Jackson performed the song at the Soul Train Music Awards in a chair, saying he had suffered an injury in rehearsals.^[105] In the UK and other parts of Europe, "Heal the World" was the biggest hit from the album; it sold 450,000 copies in the UK and spent five weeks at number two in 1992.^[103]
Jackson founded the Heal the World Foundation in 1992. The charity organization brought underprivileged children to Jackson's ranch to enjoy theme park rides that Jackson had built on the property. The foundation also sent millions of dollars around the globe to help children threatened by war, poverty, and disease. In the same year Jackson published his second book, the bestselling collection of poetry, Dancing the Dream. While it was a commercial success and revealed a more intimate side to Jackson's nature, the collection was mostly critically unacclaimed at the time of release. In 2009, the book was republished by Doubleday and was more positively received by some critics in the wake of Jackson's untimely death. The Dangerous World Tour grossed $100 million. The tour began on June 27, 1992, and finished on November 11, 1993. Jackson performed to 3.5 million people in 67 concerts.^[103]^[106] He sold the broadcast rights to his Dangerous world tour to HBO for $20 million, a record-breaking deal that still stands.^[107]
Following the illness and death of Ryan White, Jackson helped draw public attention to HIV/AIDS, something that was still controversial at the time. He publicly pleaded with the Clinton Administration at Bill Clinton's Inaugural Gala to give more money to HIV/AIDS charities and research.^[108]^[109] In a high-profile visit to Africa, Jackson visited several countries, among them Gabon and Egypt.^[110] His first stop to Gabon was greeted with a sizable and enthusiastic reception of more than 100,000 people, some of them carrying signs that read, "Welcome Home Michael."^[110] In his trip to Côte d'Ivoire, Jackson was crowned "King Sani" by a tribal chief.^[110] He then thanked the dignitaries in French and English, signed official documents formalizing his kingship and sat on a golden throne while presiding over ceremonial dances.^[110]
In January 1993, Jackson made a memorable appearance at the halftime show at Super Bowl XXVII. The performance began with Jackson catapulting onto the stage as fireworks went off behind him. As he landed on the canvas, he maintained a motionless "clenched fist, standing statue stance", dressed in a gold and black military outfit and sunglasses; he remained completely motionless for a minute and a half while the crowd cheered. He then slowly removed his sunglasses, threw them away and sang four songs: "Jam", "Billie Jean", "Black or White" and "Heal the World". It was the first Super Bowl where the audience figures increased during the half-time show, and was viewed by 135 million Americans alone; Jackson's Dangerous album rose 90 places up the album chart.^[56] Jackson was given the "Living Legend Award" at the 35th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. "Black or White" was Grammy-nominated for best vocal performance. "Jam" gained two nominations: Best R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song.^[103] The Dangerous album won a Grammy for Best Engineered – Non Classical, awarding the work of Bruce Swedien and Teddy Riley. In the same year, Michael Jackson won three American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Album (Dangerous), Favorite Soul/R&B Single ("Remember the Time") and was the first to win the International Artist Award, for his global performances and humanitarian concerns. This award will bear his name in the future.^[27]^[34]^[111]

First child sexual abuse allegations and first marriage (1993–94)

Jackson gave a 90-minute interview to Oprah Winfrey in February 1993, his second television interview since 1979. He grimaced when speaking of his childhood abuse at the hands of his father; he believed he had missed out on much of his childhood years, admitting that he often cried from loneliness. He denied tabloid rumors that he had bought the bones of the Elephant Man, slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, or bleached his skin, stating for the first time that he had vitiligo. The interview was watched by an American audience of 90 million. Dangerous re-entered the album chart in the top 10, more than a year after its original release.^[12]^[56]^[103]
In the summer of 1993, Jackson was accused of child sexual abuse by a 13-year-old boy named Jordan Chandler and his father, Dr. Evan Chandler, a dentist.^[112]^[113]^[114] The Chandler family demanded payment from Jackson, and the singer initially refused. Jordan Chandler eventually told the police that Jackson had sexually abused him.^[115] Dr. Chandler was tape-recorded discussing his intention to pursue charges, saying, "If I go through with this, I win big-time. There's no way I lose. I will get everything I want and they will be destroyed forever ... Michael's career will be over". Jordan's mother was, however, adamant that there had been no wrongdoing on Jackson's part.^[114] Jackson later used the recording to argue that he was the victim of a jealous father whose only goal was to extort money from the singer.^[114]
Later that year, on December 20, Jackson's home was raided by the police, and Jackson submitted to a 25-minute strip search.^[116] Jordan Chandler had reportedly given police a description of Jackson's intimate parts, notably claiming that his bleach-damaged penis was circumcised; the strip search revealed, to the contrary, that Jackson was actually uncircumcised,^[117] a fact confirmed in his autopsy.^[118] His friends said he never recovered from the humiliation of the strip search. The investigation was inconclusive and no charges were ever filed.^[119]^[120] Jackson described the search in an emotional public statement, and proclaimed his innocence.^[112]^[116]^[121] On January 1, 1994, Jackson's insurance carrier settled with the Chandlers out of court for $22 million. A Santa Barbara County grand jury and a Los Angeles County grand jury disbanded on May 2, 1994 without indicting Jackson.^[122] After which time the Chandlers stopped co-operating with the criminal investigation around July 6, 1994.^[123]^[124]^[125] The out-of-court settlement's documentation specifically stated Jackson admitted no wrongdoing and no liability; the Chandlers and their family lawyer Larry Feldman signed it without contest.^[126] The Chandlers' lawyer Mr. Feldman also explicitly stated "nobody bought anybody's silence".^[127] A decade after the fact, during the second round of child abuse allegations, Jackson's lawyers would file a memo stating that the 1994 settlement was done without his consent.^[124]

Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley, in 1994.

In May 1994, Jackson married the daughter of Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie Presley. They had first met in 1975, when a seven-year-old Presley attended one of Jackson's family engagements at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, and were reconnected through a mutual friend.^[128] According to a friend of Presley's, "their adult friendship began in November 1992 in L.A."^[129] They stayed in contact every day over the telephone. As the child molestation accusations became public, Jackson became dependent on Presley for emotional support; she was concerned about his faltering health and addiction to drugs.^[130] Presley explained, "I believed he didn't do anything wrong and that he was wrongly accused and yes I started falling for him. I wanted to save him. I felt that I could do it."^[131] She eventually persuaded him to settle the allegations out of court and go into rehabilitation to recover.^[130]
Jackson proposed to Presley over the telephone towards the fall of 1993, saying, "If I asked you to marry me, would you do it?"^[130] They married in the Dominican Republic in secrecy, denying it for nearly two months afterwards.^[132] The marriage was, in her words, "a married couple's life ... that was sexually active".^[133] At the time, the tabloid media speculated that the wedding was a ploy to prop up Jackson's public image.^[132] The marriage lasted less than two years and ended with an amicable divorce settlement.^[134] In a 2010 interview with Oprah, Presley admitted that they spent four more years after the divorce "getting back together and breaking up", until she decided to stop.^[135]

HIStory, second marriage and fatherhood (1995–99)

In 1995, Jackson merged his ATV Music catalog with Sony's music publishing division creating Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Jackson retained half-ownership of the company, earned $95 million upfront as well as the rights to even more songs.^[136]^[137] He then released the double album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. The first disc, HIStory Begins, was a 15-track greatest hits album, and was later reissued as Greatest Hits: HIStory, Volume I in 2001, while the second disc, HIStory Continues, contained 15 new songs. The album debuted at number one on the charts and has been certified for seven million shipments in the US.^[138] It is the best-selling multiple-disc album of all-time, with 20 million copies (40 million units) sold worldwide.^[102]^[139] HIStory received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.^[140]

The first single released from the album was the double A-side "Scream/Childhood". "Scream" was a duet, performed with Jackson's youngest sister Janet. The song fights against the media, mainly for what the media made him out to be during his 1993 child abuse allegations. The single had the highest debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number five, and received a Grammy nomination for "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals".^[140] "You Are Not Alone" was the second single released from HIStory; it holds the Guinness World Record for the first song ever to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.^[88] It was seen as a major artistic and commercial success, receiving a Grammy nomination for "Best Pop Vocal Performance".^[140] In late 1995, Jackson was rushed to a hospital after collapsing during rehearsals for a televised performance; the incident was caused by a stress-related panic attack.^[141] "Earth Song" was the third single released from HIStory, and topped the UK Singles Chart for six weeks over Christmas 1995; it sold a million copies, making it Jackson's most successful single in the UK.^[140] The track "They Don't Care About Us" became controversial when the Anti-Defamation League and other groups criticized its allegedly antisemitic lyrics. Jackson quickly put out a revised version of the song without the offending lyrics.^[142] In 1996, Jackson won a Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form for "Scream" and an American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist.^[27]^[143]
The album was promoted with the successful HIStory World Tour. The tour began on September 7, 1996, and finished on October 15, 1997. Jackson performed 82 concerts in 58 cities to over 4.5 million fans, and grossed up a total of $165 million. The show, which visited five continents and 35 countries, became Jackson's most successful in terms of audience figures.^[81] During the tour, Jackson married his longtime friend Deborah Jeanne Rowe, a dermatology nurse, in an impromptu ceremony in Sydney, Australia. Rowe was approximately six months pregnant with the couple's first child at the time. Originally, Rowe and Jackson had no plans to marry, but Jackson's mother Katherine persuaded them to do so.^[144] Michael Joseph Jackson Jr (commonly known as Prince) was born on February 13, 1997; his sister Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson was born a year later on April 3, 1998.^[134]^[145] The couple divorced in 1999, and Jackson got full custody of the children. The divorce was relatively amicable, but a subsequent custody suit was not settled until 2006.^[146]^[147]
In 1997, Jackson released Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix, which contained remixes of hit singles from HIStory and five new songs. Worldwide sales stand at 6 million copies as of 2007, it is the best selling remix album ever released.^[148] It reached number one in the UK, as did the title track.^[148]^[149] In the US, the album was certified platinum, but only reached number 24.^[99]^[140] Forbes placed his annual income at $35 million in 1996 and $20 million in 1997.^[87] Throughout June 1999, Jackson was involved in a number of charitable events. He joined Luciano Pavarotti for a benefit concert in Modena, Italy. The show was in support of the nonprofit organization War Child, and raised a million dollars for the refugees of Kosovo, FR Yugoslavia, as well as additional funds for the children of Guatemala.^[150] Later that month, Jackson organized a set of "Michael Jackson & Friends" benefit concerts in Germany and Korea. Other artists involved included Slash, The Scorpions, Boyz II Men, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, A. R. Rahman, Prabhu Deva Sundaram, Shobana, Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti. The proceeds went to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, the Red Cross and UNESCO.^[151]

Label dispute, Invincible and third child (2000–03)

At the turn of the century, the American Music Awards honored Jackson as Artist of the '80s.^[152] Throughout 2000 and 2001, Jackson worked in the studio with Teddy Riley and Rodney Jerkins, as well as other collaborators. These sessions would result in the album Invincible, released in October 2001. Invincible was Jackson's first full-length album in six years, and it would be the last album of new material he released while still alive. The release of the album was preceded by a dispute between Jackson and his record label, Sony Music Entertainment. Jackson had expected the licenses to the masters of his albums to revert to him sometime in the early 2000s. Once he had the licenses, he would be able to promote the material however he pleased and he would also be able to keep all the profits. However, due to various clauses in the contract, the revert date turned out to be many years away. Jackson discovered that the attorney who represented him in the deal was also representing Sony.^[149] Jackson was also concerned about the fact that for a number of years, Sony had been pressuring him to sell his share in their music catalog venture. Jackson feared that Sony might have a conflict of interest, since if Jackson's career failed he would have to sell his share of the catalog at a low price.^[153] Jackson sought an early exit from his contract.^[149] Just before the release of Invincible, Jackson informed the head of Sony Music Entertainment, Tommy Mottola, that he was leaving Sony.^[149] As a result, all singles releases, video shootings and promotions concerning the Invincible album were suspended.
In September 2001, two 30th Anniversary concerts were held at Madison Square Garden to mark the singer's 30th year as a solo artist. Jackson appeared onstage alongside his brothers for the first time since 1984. The show also featured performances by Mýa, Usher, Whitney Houston, 'N Sync, Destiny's Child, Monica, Luther Vandross, and Slash, among other artists.^[154] The second of the two shows took place the night before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.^[155] After 9/11, Jackson helped organize the United We Stand: What More Can I Give benefit concert at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The concert took place on October 21, 2001, and included performances from dozens of major artists, including Jackson, who performed his song "What More Can I Give" as the finale.^[153] Jackson's solo performances were omitted from the televised version of the benefit concert, although he could still be seen singing background vocals. This omission happened because of contractual issues related to the earlier 30th Anniversary concerts: those concerts were boiled down into a two-hour TV special entitled Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration: The Solo Years which debuted in November 2001.
In spite of the events preceding its release, Invincible came out in October 2001 to much anticipation. Invincible proved to be a hit, debuting atop the charts in 13 countries and going on to sell approximately 13 million copies worldwide. It received double-platinum certification in the US.^[99]^[102]^[156] However, the sales for Invincible were lower than those of his previous releases, due in part to a lack of promotion, no supporting world tour and the label dispute. The album also came out at a bad time for the music industry in general.^[153] The album cost $30 million to record, not including promotional expenditures.^[157] Invincible spawned three singles, "You Rock My World", "Cry" and "Butterflies", the latter without a music video. Jackson alleged in July 2002 that Mottola was a "devil" and a "racist" who did not support his African-American artists, using them merely for his own personal gain.^[153] He charged that Mottola had called his colleague Irv Gotti a "fat nigger".^[158] Sony refused to renew Jackson's contract, and claimed that a $25 million promotional campaign had failed because Jackson refused to tour in the United States.^[157]
In 2002, Michael Jackson won his 22nd American Music Award for Artist of the Century.^[159] In the same year, Jackson's third child, Prince Michael Jackson II (nicknamed "Blanket") was born.^[160] The mother's identity is unknown, but Jackson has said the child was the result of artificial insemination from a surrogate mother and his own sperm.^[146] On November 20 of that year, Jackson brought his newborn son onto the balcony of his room at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin, as fans stood below, holding him in his right arm, with a cloth loosely draped over the baby's face. The baby was briefly extended over a railing, four stories above ground level, causing widespread criticism in the media. Jackson later apologized for the incident, calling it "a terrible mistake".^[161] Sony released Number Ones, a compilation of Jackson's hits on CD and DVD. In the US, the album was certified triple platinum by the RIAA; in the UK it was certified six times platinum for shipments of at least 1.2 million units.^[99]^[162]

Second child sexual abuse allegations and acquittal (2003–05)

Beginning in May 2002, Jackson allowed a documentary film crew, led by British TV personality Martin Bashir, to follow him around just about everywhere he went. Bashir's film crew was with Jackson during the "baby-dangling incident" in Berlin. The program was broadcast in March 2003 as Living with Michael Jackson, and painted an extraordinarily unflattering portrait of the singer.
In a particularly controversial scene, Jackson was seen holding hands and discussing sleeping arrangements with a young boy.^[163] As soon as the documentary aired, the Santa Barbara county attorney's office began a criminal investigation. Jackson was arrested in November 2003, and was charged with seven counts of child molestation and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent in relation to the 13 year old boy shown in the film.^[163] Jackson denied the allegations, saying the sleepovers were not sexual in nature. The People v. Jackson trial began on January 31, 2005, in Santa Maria, California, and lasted five months, until the end of May. On June 13, 2005, Jackson was acquitted on all counts.^[164]^[165]^[166] After the trial, in a highly publicized relocation he moved to the Persian Gulf island of Bahrain, as a guest of Sheikh Abdullah.^[167]

Closure of Neverland, Final years and This Is It (2006–09)

In March 2006, the main house at the Neverland Ranch was closed as a cost-cutting measure.^[168] There were numerous reports around that time that Jackson was having financial problems. Jackson had been delinquent on his repayments of a $270 million loan secured against his music publishing holdings, even though those holdings were reportedly making him as much as $75 million a year.^[169] Bank of America sold the debt to Fortress Investments. Sony reportedly proposed a restructuring deal which would give them a future option to buy half of Jackson's stake in their jointly owned publishing company (leaving Jackson with a 25% stake).^[137] Jackson agreed to a Sony-backed refinancing deal in April 2006, although the exact details were not made public.^[170] Jackson did not have a recording contract in place with Sony or any other major record label at the time.
In early 2006, there was an announcement that Jackson had signed a contract with a Bahrain-based startup called Two Seas Records. However, nothing ever came of that deal, and the CEO of Two Seas, Guy Holmes, later stated that the deal had never been finalized.^[171]^[172] Throughout 2006, Sony repackaged 20 singles from the 1980s and 1990s as the Michael Jackson: Visionary series, which subsequently became a box set. Most of those singles returned to the charts as a result. In September 2006, Jackson and his ex-wife Debbie Rowe confirmed reports that they had settled their long-running child custody suit. The terms were never made public. Jackson continued to be the custodial parent of the couple's two children.^[147] In October 2006, Fox News entertainment reporter Roger Friedman said that Jackson had been recording at a studio in rural Westmeath, Ireland. It was not known at the time what Jackson might be working on, or who might be paying for the sessions, since his publicist had recently issued a statement claiming that he had left Two Seas.^[172]^[173]
In November 2006, Jackson invited an Access Hollywood camera crew into the studio in Westmeath, and MSNBC broke the story that he was working on a new album, produced by will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas.^[102] Jackson performed at the World Music Awards, in London on November 15, 2006, and accepted a Diamond Award for selling over 100 million records.^[102]^[174] Jackson returned to the United States after Christmas 2006 to attend James Brown's funeral in Augusta, Georgia. He gave one of the eulogies, saying that "James Brown is my greatest inspiration."^[175] In the spring of 2007, Jackson and Sony teamed up to buy yet another music publishing company: Famous Music LLC, formerly owned by Viacom. This deal gave him the rights to songs by Eminem, Shakira and Beck, among others.^[176] Jackson recorded extensively during this period in New York with songwriter and producer will.i.am and also in Las Vegas with producers Akon and RedOne.^[177]^[177]^[178] In March 2007, Jackson gave a brief interview to the Associated Press in Tokyo, where he said, "I've been in the entertainment industry since I was 6 years old, and as Charles Dickens would say, 'It's been the best of times, the worst of times.' But I would not change my career ... While some have made deliberate attempts to hurt me, I take it in stride because I have a loving family, a strong faith and wonderful friends and fans who have, and continue, to support me."^[179]
In September 2007 Jackson was reportedly still working with will.i.am, but the album was apparently never completed.^[180] However, in 2008, Jackson and Sony released Thriller 25 to mark the 25th anniversary of the original Thriller. This album featured the previously unreleased song "For All Time" (an outtake from the original sessions) as well as remixes, where Jackson collaborated with younger artists who had been inspired by his work.^[181] Two of the remixes were released as singles with only modest success: "The Girl Is Mine 2008" (with will.i.am) and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" (with Akon). The first single was based on an early demo version, without Paul McCartney. The album itself was a hit, however.^[181]^[182]^[183]^[184] In anticipation of Jackson's 50th birthday, Sony BMG released a series of greatest-hits albums called King of Pop. Slightly different versions were released in various countries, based on polls of local fans.^[185] King of Pop reached the top 10 in most countries where it was issued, and also sold well as an import in other countries (such as the United States.)^[186]^[187]
In the fall of 2008, Fortress Investments threatened to foreclose on Neverland Ranch, which Jackson used as collateral for loans running into many tens of millions of dollars. However, Fortress opted to sell Jackson's debts to Colony Capital LLC. In November, Jackson transferred Neverland Ranch's title to Sycamore Valley Ranch Company LLC, which was a joint venture between Jackson and Colony Capital LLC. This deal cleared Jackson's debt, and he reportedly even gained an extra $35 million from the venture. At the time of his death, Jackson still owned a stake in Neverland/Sycamore Valley, but it is unknown how large that stake was.^[188]^[189]^[190] In September 2008, Jackson entered negotiations with Julien's Auction House to display and auction a large collection of memorabilia amounting to approximately 1,390 lots. The auction was scheduled to take place between April 22 and April 25.^[191] An exhibition of the lots opened as scheduled on April 14, but the actual auction was eventually cancelled at Jackson's request.^[192]
In March 2009, Jackson held a press conference at London's O₂ Arena and announced a series of comeback concerts titled This Is It. The shows would be Jackson's first major series of concerts since the HIStory World Tour finished in 1997. Jackson suggested possible retirement after the shows; he said it would be his "final curtain call". The initial plan was for 10 concerts in London, followed by shows in Paris, New York City and Mumbai. Randy Phillips, president and chief executive of AEG Live, stated that the first 10 dates alone would earn the singer approximately £50 million.^[193] The London residency was increased to 50 dates after record breaking ticket sales: over one million were sold in less than two hours.^[194] Jackson rehearsed in Los Angeles in the weeks leading up to the tour under the direction of choreographer Kenny Ortega. Most of these rehearsals took place at the Staples Center, which was owned by AEG.^[195] The concerts would have commenced on July 13, 2009, and finished on March 6, 2010. Less than three weeks before the first show was due to begin in London and with all concerts being sold out, Jackson died after suffering cardiac arrest.^[196] Some time before his death, it was widely stated that he was starting a clothing line with Christian Audigier; due to his death, the current status of the label remains unknown.^[197]^[198]
Jackson's first posthumous single was a song entitled "This Is It" which Jackson cowrote in the 1980s with Paul Anka. It was not on the set lists for the concerts, and the recording was based on an old demo tape. The surviving brothers reunited in the studio for the first time since 1989 to record backing vocals. On October 28, 2009, a documentary film about the rehearsals entitled Michael Jackson's This Is It was released.^[199] Even though it ran for a limited two-week engagement, it became the highest grossing documentary or concert movie of all time, with earnings of more than $260 million worldwide.^[200] Jackson's estate received 90% of the profits.^[201] The film was accompanied by a compilation album of the same name. Two versions of the new song appear on the album, which also featured original masters of Jackson's hits in the order in which they appear in the movie, along with a bonus disc with previously unreleased versions of more Jackson hits as well as a spoken-word poem entitled "Planet Earth".^[202] At the 2009 American Music Awards Jackson won four posthumous awards, two for him and two for his album Number Ones, bringing his total American Music Awards total to 26.^[203]^[204]

Death and memorial

On June 25, 2009, Jackson died while in his bed at his rented mansion at 100 North Carolwood Drive in the Holmby Hills district of Los Angeles. Attempts at resuscitating him by Conrad Murray, his personal physician, were unsuccessful.^[205] Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics received a 911 call at 12:22 (PDT, 19:22 UTC), arriving three minutes later at Jackson's location.^[206]^[207] He was reportedly not breathing and CPR was performed.^[208] Resuscitation efforts continued en route to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and for an hour after arriving there at 1:13 (20:13 UTC). He was pronounced dead at 2:26 local time (21:26 UTC).^[209]^[210] Jackson's death triggered a global outpouring of grief.^[205]
The news spread quickly online, causing websites to slow down and crash from user overload. Both TMZ and the Los Angeles Times suffered outages.^[211] Google initially believed that the input from millions of people searching for "Michael Jackson" meant that the search engine was under DDoS attack. Twitter reported a crash, as did Wikipedia at 3:15 p.m. PDT (6:15 p.m. EDT).^[212] The Wikimedia Foundation reported nearly a million visitors to Jackson's biography within one hour, probably the most visitors in a one-hour period to any article in Wikipedia's history.^[213] AOL Instant Messenger collapsed for 40 minutes. AOL called it a "seminal moment in Internet history", adding, "We've never seen anything like it in terms of scope or depth."^[214]
Around 15% of Twitter posts—or 5,000 tweets per minute—reportedly mentioned Jackson after the news broke,^[215]^[216] compared to the 5% recalled as having mentioned the Iranian elections or the flu pandemic that had made headlines earlier in the year.^[216] Overall, web traffic ranged from 11% to at least 20% higher than normal.^[215]^[217] MTV and Black Entertainment Television (BET) aired marathons of Jackson's music videos.^[218] Jackson specials aired on multiple television stations around the world. The British soap opera EastEnders added a last-minute scene, in which one character tells another about the news, to the June 26 episode.^[219] Jackson was the topic of every front-page headline in the daily British tabloid The Sun for about two weeks following his death.^[220] During the same period, the three major U.S. networks' evening newscasts—ABC World News, CBS Evening News, and NBC Nightly News—devoted 34% of their broadcast time to him.^[221] Magazines including Time published commemorative editions.^[222] A scene that had featured Jackson's sister La Toya was cut from the film Brüno out of respect toward Jackson's family.^[223]
Jackson's memorial was held on July 7, 2009, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, preceded by a private family service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park's Hall of Liberty. Jackson's casket was present during the memorial but no information was released about the final disposition of the body. While some unofficial reports claimed a worldwide audience as high as one billion people,^[224]^[225]^[224] the U.S. audience was estimated by Nielsen to be 31.1 million, an amount comparable to the estimated 35.1 million that watched the 2004 burial of former president Ronald Reagan, and the estimated 33.1 million Americans who watched the 1997 funeral for Princess Diana.^[226]
Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, John Mayer, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Jermaine Jackson, and Shaheen Jafargholi performed at the event. Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson gave eulogies, while Queen Latifah read, "We had him," a poem written for the occasion by Maya Angelou.^[227] The Reverend Al Sharpton received a standing ovation with cheers when he told Jackson's children, "Wasn't nothing strange about your daddy. It was strange what your daddy had to deal with. But he dealt with it anyway."^[228] Jackson's 11-year-old daughter, Paris Katherine, cried as she told the crowd, "Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine ... I just wanted to say I love him ... so much."^[229] Reverend Lucious Smith provided a closing prayer.^[230] On August 24, several news outlets quoted anonymous sources as stating that the Los Angeles coroner had decided to treat Jackson's death as a homicide; this was later confirmed by the coroner on August 28.^[231]^[232] At the time of death, Jackson had been administered propofol, lorazepam and midazolam.^[233] Law enforcement officials conducted a manslaughter investigation of his personal physician, Conrad Murray.^[234] On February 8, 2010, Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter by prosecutors in Los Angeles.^[235] Jackson was entombed on September 3, 2009, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.^[236]

On June 25, 2010, the first anniversary of Jackson's death, fans came to Los Angeles to pay their tribute to him. They visited Jackson’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and his family’s home, as well as Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Many of the fans were carrying sunflowers and other tribute items to drop off at the sites. Members of the Jackson family and close friends arrived to pay their respects.^[237]^[238] Katherine returned to Gary, Indiana to unveil a granite monument constructed in the front yard of the family home. The memorial continued with a candlelight vigil and a special performance of "We Are the World."^[239]^[240] On June 26, there was a protest march in front of the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division at the old Parker Center building and a petition with thousands of signatures demanding justice was delivered.^[241]^[242] The Jackson Family Foundation in conjunction with Voiceplate presented "Forever Michael", an event bringing together Jackson family members, celebrities, fans, supporters and the community to celebrate and honor his legacy. A portion of the proceeds were presented to some of Jackson's favorite charities. Katherine also introduced her new book "Never Can Say Goodbye."^[243]^[244]^[245]

Death aftermath

After his death, Jackson became the best-selling albums artist of 2009; in the United States selling over 8.2 million albums and a total of 35 million albums worldwide in the 12 months that followed his death.^[246]^[247] Following this surge in sales, Sony announced that they had extended their relationship with his material. The distribution rights held by Sony Music were due to expire in 2015.^[248] On March 16, 2010, Sony Music Entertainment, in a move spearheaded by its Columbia/Epic Label Group division, signed a new deal with the Jackson estate to extend their distribution rights to his back catalogue until at least 2017, as well as to obtain permission to release ten new albums with previously unreleased material and new collections of released work. On November 4, 2010 Sony announced the release of Michael, the first posthumous album set to be released on December 14, with the promotional single released to the radios on November 8, entitled "Breaking News".^[249] The deal was unprecedented in the music industry as it is the most expensive music contract pertaining to a single artist in history; it reportedly involved Sony Music paying $250 million for the deal, with the Jackson estate getting the full sum as well as its share of royalties for all works released.^[248]^[250] Video game developer Ubisoft announced it would release a new dancing-and-singing game featuring Michael Jackson for the 2010 holiday season. The game entitled Michael Jackson: The Experience will be among the first to use Kinect and PlayStation Move, the respective motion-detecting camera systems for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 due out later that year.^[251] Cirque du Soleil announced on 3 November 2010 that it would launch "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" in October 2011 in Montreal, while a permanent show will reside in Las Vegas.^[252] The 90-minute US$57M production will combine Jackson's iconic musical oeuvre and choreography with the Cirque's signature artistry, dance and aerial displays involving 65 artists.^[253] The tour was written and directed by Jamie King^[254] and centers on Jackson's "inspirational Giving Tree – the wellspring of creativity where his love of music and dance, fairy tale and magic, and the fragile beauty of nature are unlocked."^[255]
In April 2011, Jackson's longtime friend and billionaire businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed, chairman of Fulham F.C., unveiled a statue of Jackson outside the club's stadium, Craven Cottage.^[256] Fulham fans were however bemused by the statue and failed to understand the relevance of Jackson to the club.^[257] Al Fayed however defended the statue and told the fans to 'go to hell' if they didn't appreciate the statue.^[258]

Artistry

Jackson's music took root in R&B, pop and soul. He had been influenced by the work of contemporary musicians such as Little Richard, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Diana Ross, David Ruffin, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis, Jr., The Isley Brothers, the Bee Gees and the West Side Story dancers, to whom he made a tribute in "Beat It" and in the "Bad" video.^[259] According to David Winters, who met and befriended Jackson while choreographing the 1971 Diana Ross TV Special "Diana!", (which was also Jackson's first solo debut outside of The Jackson 5), Jackson watched West Side Story almost every week and it was his favorite film.^[2]^[260]^[261] While Little Richard had a substantial influence on Jackson,^[262]^[263] James Brown was Jackson's greatest inspiration. In reference to Brown, Jackson declared: "Ever since I was a small child, no more than like six years old, my mother would wake me no matter what time it was, if I was sleeping, no matter what I was doing, to watch the television to see the master at work. And when I saw him move, I was mesmerized. I had never seen a performer perform like James Brown, and right then and there I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life because of James Brown."^[264]
The young Michael Jackson owed his vocal technique in large part to Diana Ross. Not only a mother figure to him, she was often observed in rehearsal as an accomplished performer. He later expressed: "I got to know her well. She taught me so much. I used to just sit in the corner and watch the way she moved. She was art in motion. I studied the way she moved, the way she sang – just the way she was." He told her: "I want to be just like you, Diana." She said: "You just be yourself."^[265] But Jackson owed part of his enduring style—especially his use of the oooh interjection—to Ross. From a young age, Jackson often punctuated his verses with a sudden exclamation of oooh. Diana Ross had used this effect on many of the songs recorded with The Supremes.^[266]

Musical themes and genres

Unlike many artists, Jackson did not write his songs on paper. Instead he would dictate into a sound recorder, and when recording he would sing the lyrics from memory.^[267] In most of his songs, such as "Billie Jean", "Who Is It", and "Tabloid Junkie", he would beatbox and imitate the instruments using his voice instead of playing the actual instruments, along with other sounds. Jackson noted that it is easier to sing a drum line, or sing a bass, instead of playing a drum line or a bass with an instrument. Several critics have said that Jackson's distinct voice was able to replace any instrument convincingly. Steve Huey of Allmusic said that, throughout his solo career, Jackson's versatility allowed him to experiment with various themes and genres.^[268] As a musician, he ranged from Motown's dance fare and ballads to techno and house-edged new jack swing to work that incorporates both funk rhythms and hard rock guitar.^[14]
According to Huey, Thriller refined the strengths of Off the Wall; the dance and rock tracks were more aggressive, while the pop tunes and ballads were softer and more soulful.^[268] Notable tracks included the ballads "The Lady in My Life", "Human Nature" and "The Girl Is Mine"; the funk pieces "Billie Jean" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'"; and the disco set "Baby Be Mine" and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)".^[268]^[269]^[270]^[271] With Thriller, Christopher Connelly of Rolling Stone commented that Jackson developed his long association with the subliminal theme of paranoia and darker imagery.^[271] Allmusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine noted this is evident on the songs "Billie Jean" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'".^[270] In "Billie Jean", Jackson sings about an obsessive fan who alleges he has fathered a child of hers.^[268] In "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" he argues against gossip and the media.^[271] "Beat It" decried gang violence in an homage to West Side Story, and was Jackson's first successful rock cross-over piece, according to Huey.^[14]^[268] He also observed that the title track "Thriller" began Jackson's interest with the theme of the supernatural, a topic he revisited in subsequent years.^[268] In 1985, Jackson co-wrote the charity anthem "We Are the World"; humanitarian themes later became a recurring theme in his lyrics and public persona.^[268]

"Smooth Criminal"

A single from the album Bad, released 1988, "Smooth Criminal" features digital drum sounds, keyboard-created bass lines and other percussion elements designed to give the impression of a pulsing heart.^[272]

In Bad, Jackson's concept of the predatory lover can be seen on the rock song "Dirty Diana".^[273] The lead single "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" is a traditional love ballad, while "Man in the Mirror" is an anthemic ballad of confession and resolution.^[73] "Smooth Criminal" was an evocation of bloody assault, rape and likely murder.^[73] Allmusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine states that Dangerous presents Jackson as a very paradoxical individual.^[274] He comments the album is more diverse than his previous Bad, as it appeals to an urban audience while also attracting the middle class with anthems like "Heal the World".^[274] The first half of the record is dedicated to new jack swing, including songs like "Jam" and "Remember the Time".^[275] The album is Jackson's first where social ills become a primary theme; "Why You Wanna Trip on Me", for example, protests against world hunger, AIDS, homelessness and drugs.^[275] Dangerous contains sexually charged efforts such as the multifaceted love song, "In the Closet".^[275] The title track continues the theme of the predatory lover and compulsive desire.^[275] The second half includes introspective, pop-gospel anthems such as "Will You Be There", "Heal the World" and "Keep the Faith"; these songs show Jackson opening up about various personal struggles and worries.^[275] In the ballad "Gone Too Soon", Jackson gives tribute to his friend Ryan White and the plight of those with AIDS.^[276]
HIStory creates an atmosphere of paranoia.^[277] Its content focuses on the hardships and public struggles Jackson went through just prior to its production. In the new jack swing-funk-rock efforts "Scream" and "Tabloid Junkie", along with the R&B ballad "You Are Not Alone", Jackson retaliates against the injustice and isolation he feels, and directs much of his anger at the media.^[278] In the introspective ballad "Stranger in Moscow", Jackson laments over his "fall from grace", while songs like "Earth Song", "Childhood", "Little Susie" and "Smile" are all operatic pop pieces.^[277]^[278] In the track "D.S.", Jackson launched a verbal attack against Tom Sneddon. He describes Sneddon as an antisocial, white supremacist who wanted to "get my ass, dead or alive". Of the song, Sneddon said, "I have not—shall we say—done him the honor of listening to it, but I've been told that it ends with the sound of a gunshot".^[279] Invincible found Jackson working heavily with producer Rodney Jerkins.^[268] It is a record made up of urban soul like "Cry" and "The Lost Children", ballads such as "Speechless", "Break of Dawn" and "Butterflies" and mixes Hip-Hop, Pop and R&B in "2000 Watts", "Heartbreaker" and "Invincible".^[280]^[281]

Vocal style

Jackson sang from childhood, and over time his voice and vocal style changed noticeably. Between 1971 and 1975, Jackson's voice descended from boy soprano to high tenor.^[282] Jackson first used a technique called the "vocal hiccup" in 1973, starting with the song "It's Too Late to Change the Time" from The Jackson 5's G.I.T.: Get It Together album.^[283] Jackson did not use the hiccup technique— somewhat like a gulping for air or gasping— fully until the recording of Off the Wall: it can be seen in full force in the "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" promotional video.^[15] With the arrival of Off the Wall in the late 1970s, Jackson's abilities as a vocalist were well regarded. At the time, Rolling Stone compared his vocals to the "breathless, dreamy stutter" of Stevie Wonder. Their analysis was also that "Jackson's feathery-timbred tenor is extraordinarily beautiful. It slides smoothly into a startling falsetto that's used very daringly".^[284]^[285] 1982 saw the release of Thriller, and Rolling Stone was of the opinion that Jackson was then singing in a "fully adult voice" that was "tinged by sadness".^[271]

"Black or White"

The lead single from Dangerous, the danceable hard rock song "Black or White" was one of Jackson's most successful recordings.^[286]^[287]^[288] It contains many features of Jackson's vocal style, including the vocal hiccup he is known for.

A distinctive deliberate mispronunciation of "come on", used frequently by Jackson, occasionally spelt "cha'mone" or "shamone", is also a staple in impressions and caricatures of him.^[289] The turn of the 1990s saw the release of the introspective album Dangerous. The New York Times noted that on some tracks, "he gulps for breath, his voice quivers with anxiety or drops to a desperate whisper, hissing through clenched teeth" and he had a "wretched tone".^[275] When singing of brotherhood or self-esteem the musician would return to "smooth" vocals.^[275] When commenting on Invincible, Rolling Stone were of the opinion that—at the age of 43—Jackson still performed "exquisitely voiced rhythm tracks and vibrating vocal harmonies".^[290] Nelson George summed up Jackson's vocals by stating "The grace, the aggression, the growling, the natural boyishness, the falsetto, the smoothness—that combination of elements mark him as a major vocalist".^[272]

Music videos and choreography

Referred to as the King of Music Videos,^[291] Steve Huey of Allmusic observed how Jackson transformed the music video into an art form and a promotional tool through complex story lines, dance routines, special effects and famous cameo appearances; simultaneously breaking down racial barriers.^[268] Before Thriller, Jackson struggled to receive coverage on MTV, allegedly because he was African American.^[292] Pressure from CBS Records persuaded MTV to start showing "Billie Jean" and later "Beat It", leading to a lengthy partnership with Jackson, also helping other black music artists gain recognition.^[293] MTV employees deny any racism in their coverage, or pressure to change their stance. MTV maintains that they played rock music, regardless of race.^[294] The popularity of his videos on MTV helped to put the relatively young channel "on the map"; MTV's focus shifted in favor of pop and R&B.^[293]^[295] His performance on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever changed the scope of live stage show; "That Jackson lip-synced 'Billie Jean' is, in itself, not extraordinary, but the fact that it did not change the impact of the performance is extraordinary; whether the performance was live or lip-synced made no difference to the audience" thus creating an era in which artists re-create the spectacle of music video imagery on stage.^[296] Short films like Thriller largely remained unique to Jackson, while the group dance sequence in "Beat It" has frequently been imitated.^[297] The choreography in Thriller has become a part of global pop culture, replicated everywhere from Indian films to prisons in the Philippines.^[298] The Thriller short film marked an increase in scale for music videos, and has been named the most successful music video ever by the Guinness World Records.^[88]
In the 19-minute music video for "Bad"—directed by Martin Scorsese—Jackson began using sexual imagery and choreography not previously seen in his work. He occasionally grabbed or touched his chest, torso and crotch. When asked by Oprah in the 1993 interview about why he grabbed his crotch, he replied, "I think it happens subliminally" and he described it as something that was not planned, but rather, as something that was compelled by the music. "Bad" garnered a mixed reception from both fans and critics; Time magazine described it as "infamous". The video also featured Wesley Snipes; in the future Jackson's videos would often feature famous cameo roles.^[66]^[299] For "Smooth Criminal", Jackson experimented with an innovative "anti-gravity lean" in his performances. The maneuver required special shoes for which he was granted U.S. Patent No. 5,255,452.^[300] Although the music video for "Leave Me Alone" was not officially released in the US, in 1989, it was nominated for four Billboard Music Video Awards, winning three; the same year it won a Golden Lion Award for the quality of the special effects used in its production. In 1990, "Leave Me Alone" won a Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form.^[86]
The MTV Video Vanguard Artist of the Decade Award was given to Jackson to celebrate his accomplishments in the art form in the 1980s; the following year the award was renamed in his honor.^[103] "Black or White" was accompanied by a controversial music video, which, on November 14, 1991, simultaneously premiered in 27 countries with an estimated audience of 500 million people, the largest viewing ever for a music video.^[102] It featured scenes construed as having a sexual nature as well as depictions of violence. The offending scenes in the final half of the 14-minute version were edited out to prevent the video from being banned, and Jackson apologized.^[301] Along with Jackson, it featured Macaulay Culkin, Peggy Lipton and George Wendt. It helped usher in morphing as an important technology in music videos.^[302]
"Remember the Time" was an elaborate production, and became one of his longest videos at over nine minutes. Set in ancient Egypt, it featured groundbreaking visual effects and appearances by Eddie Murphy, Iman and Magic Johnson, along with a distinct complex dance routine.^[303] The video for "In the Closet" was Jackson's most sexually provocative piece. It featured supermodel Naomi Campbell in a courtship dance with Jackson. The video was banned in South Africa because of its imagery.^[103]
The music video for "Scream", directed by Mark Romanek and production designer Tom Foden, is one of Jackson's most critically acclaimed. In 1995, it gained 11 MTV Video Music Award Nominations—more than any other music video—and won "Best Dance Video", "Best Choreography", and "Best Art Direction".^[304] The song and its accompanying video are a response to the backlash Jackson received from the media after being accused of child molestation in 1993.^[305] A year later, it won a Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form; shortly afterwards Guinness World Records listed it as the most expensive music video ever made at a cost of $7 million.^[140]^[306]
"Earth Song" was accompanied by an expensive and well-received music video that gained a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video, Short Form in 1997. The video had an environmental theme, showing images of animal cruelty, deforestation, pollution and war. Using special effects, time is reversed so that life returns, wars end, and the forests re-grow.^[140]^[307] Released in 1997 and premiering at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, Michael Jackson's Ghosts was a short film written by Jackson and Stephen King and directed by Stan Winston. The video for Ghosts is over 38 minutes long and holds the Guinness World Record as the world's longest music video.^[140]^[149]^[308]^[309]

Jackson throughout his career transformed the art of the music video and paved the way for modern pop music. Daily Telegraph writer Tom Utley described Jackson in 2003 as "extremely important" and a "genius."^[310] For much of his career, he had an "unparalleled" level of worldwide influence over the younger generation through his musical and humanitarian contributions.^[142] Jackson's music and videos, such as Thriller, fostered racial diversity in MTV's roster, helped to put the relatively new channel into public awareness, and steered the channel's focus from rock to pop music and R&B, shaping the channel into a form that proved enduring. Jackson's work continues to influence numerous hip hop, rock, pop and R&B artists, including Patrick Stump,^[311] Beyoncé,^[312] Mariah Carey,^[313] Usher,^[314] Green Day,^[315] Britney Spears,^[313] Madonna,^[316] Justin Timberlake,^[153] and Ludacris, among others.^[317]
Allmusic's Steve Huey describes Jackson as "an unstoppable juggernaut, possessed of all the skills to dominate the charts seemingly at will: an instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility and loads of sheer star power".^[268] In the mid-1980s, Time magazine's pop music critic, Jay Cocks, noted "Jackson is the biggest thing since The Beatles. He is the hottest single phenomenon since Elvis Presley. He just may be the most popular black singer ever".^[35] In 1990, Vanity Fair cited Jackson as the most popular artist in the history of show business.^[86] In 2007, Jackson said, "Music has been my outlet, my gift to all of the lovers in this world. Through it, my music, I know I will live forever."^[318]
Shortly after Jackson's death, on June 25, 2009, MTV briefly returned to its original music video format to celebrate and pay tribute to his work.^[319] The channel aired many hours of Jackson's music videos, accompanied by live news specials featuring reactions from MTV personalities and other celebrities. The temporary shift in MTV's programming culminated the following week in the channel's live coverage of Jackson's memorial service.^[320] At the memorial service on July 7, 2009, founder of Motown Records Berry Gordy proclaimed Jackson as "the greatest entertainer that ever lived."^[321]^[322]^[323]
In 2010, two university librarians found that Jackson's influence extended into academia, and was detectable in scholarly literature pertaining to a range of subject matter.^[324]^[325] The two researchers combed through various scholars' writings, and compiled an annotated bibliography of those writings that appeared to meet at least one of several criteria. Among these criteria were appearance in a peer-reviewed journal, and the provision of insight into the nature of "popular icons including Jackson".^[326] The bibliography located references to Jackson in research reports concerning music, popular culture, and an array of other topics. The bibliographers identified as their most peculiar finding an argument that certain aspects of chemistry can be effectively taught by altering and imitating elements of Jackson's singing.^[327] One of the research librarians later reflected that "the fact that someone would take a Michael Jackson song and co-opt it as a means to convey chemistry concepts just shows the pervasiveness of Jackson's influence".^[324]

Michael Jackson was inducted onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1980 as member of The Jacksons and in 1984 as solo artist. Throughout his career he received numerous honors and awards, including the World Music Awards' Best-Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium, the American Music Award's Artist of the Century Award and the Bambi Pop Artist of the Millennium Award.^[154]^[328] He was a double-inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1997 and later as a solo artist in 2001. Jackson was also inducted in several other hall of fames, including Vocal Group Hall of Fame (as The Jackson 5 member) in 1999, Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and Hit Parade Hall of Fame (with his brothers) in 2009.^[154]^[329] In 2010, Jackson was inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame as the first (and currently only) dancer from the world of pop and rock 'n' roll.^[330] His awards include many Guinness World Records (eight in 2006 alone),^[331] 13 Grammy Awards (as well as the Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award), 26 American Music Awards (24 only as a solo artist, including the "Artist of the Century", but not the poll of "Artist of the '80s")—more than any artist—, 13 number one singles in the US in his solo career—more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era^[332]—and estimated sales of up to 750 million records worldwide, making him the world's best selling male solo pop artist.^[27]^[88]^[102]^[152]^[203]^[204]^[333]^[334]^[335]^[336]^[337] On December 29, 2009, the American Film Institute recognized Jackson's passing as a "moment of significance" saying, "Michael Jackson's sudden death in June at age 50 was notable for the worldwide outpouring of grief and the unprecedented global eulogy of his posthumous concert rehearsal movie This Is It."^[338] Michael Jackson also received a Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from the United Negro College Fund ^[339] and also an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Fisk University.^[340]

Lifetime earnings

His total lifetime earnings from royalties on his solo recordings and music videos, revenue from concerts and endorsements have been estimated at US$500 million; some analysts have speculated that his music catalog holdings could be worth billions of dollars.^[87]^[341] This speculation however is contradicted by financial documents obtained by the Associated Press, which showed that as of March 31, 2007, Jackson's 50 percent stake in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog (his most prized asset) was worth $390.6 million and Michael Jackson's net worth was $236 million.^[342] Billboard has estimated that Jackson has generated at least $1 billion in revenue in the year following his death.^[343]

RPM dá 'bolo' na festa de aniversário do SBT

Sem avisar que não viria, o grupo deixou os convidados da festa de 30 anos da emissora esperando

Contratada para animar a comemoração do aniversário de 30 anos do SBT, a banda RPM, de Paulo Ricardo e Luiz Schiavon, não deu as caras no hotel Jequitimar, no Guarujá, litoral de São Paulo. A informação é da coluna Flávio Ricco, do UOL.

Segundo a publicação, o motivo do não comparecimento não foi esclarecido. O ''bolo'' em Silvio Santos e toda a direção da emissora - além dos respectivos familiares - teve que ser remediado com a improvisação de um grupo formado por membros do departamento comercial da casa.

Por outro lado, quem não havia sido convidado e compareceu à festa foi o apresentador José Luiz Datena, da Band. Ele teria ido até o resort para encontrar velhos amigos que trabalham no canal de Silvio Santos. Apesar da surpresa, ele foi bem recebido e elogiou o clima agradável que encontrou.

Revoluções por Minuto (também conhecida somente por RPM) é um grupo de rock brasileiro surgido em 1983, tendo sido um dos mais populares do país nos anos de 1984 a 1987. Foi um dos grupos mais bem sucedidos da história da música brasileira. Na segunda metade dos anos 80, conseguiram bater todos os recordes de vendagens da industria fonográfica brasileira. A suposta visão crítica e bagagem cultural do letrista Paulo Ricardo foi um argumento de marketing na vendagem dos discos da banda. A banda vendeu mais de 5 milhões de discos em sua carreira.

História

Formação

Tudo começou em 1976, em São Paulo, quando Paulo Ricardo namorava Eloá, que morava em frente à casa onde Luiz Schiavon ensaiava com May East. O casal resolveu um dia visitar os vizinhos, que estavam num ensaio crucial que decidiam entre cantar em inglês ou português. Paulo Ricardo deu seu voto, opinando pelas letras em português e assim conheceu Luiz Schiavon. Neste dia conversaram muito sobre música. Paulo estava começando sua carreira como crítico musical e Schiavon era um pianista clássico, que buscava um novo caminho, mais popular, mas sentiu dificuldade em encontrar alguém. Foi assim que Paulo recebeu o convite para integrar o "Aura", uma banda de jazz-rock que ainda tinha Paulinho Valenza na bateria. Depois de três anos de ensaios e nenhum show, Luiz encantou-se pela música eletrônica e pela tecnologia de novos sintetizadores, enquanto Paulo decidiu morar na Europa – primeiro na França e depois em Londres, de onde escrevia sobre novidades musicais para a revista Somtrês e se correspondia com freqüência com Schiavon. Este choque de personalidades impulsionou a criação do RPM depois que o trabalho da dupla foi retomado em fins de 1983, já em São Paulo.
Juntos, criaram as primeiras canções. As primeiras foram "Olhar 43", "A Cruz e A Espada" e a música que batizara a banda que ali nascia: "Revoluções por Minuto". Gravaram uma fita demo destas músicas com uma bateria eletrônica e encaminharam à gravadora CBS, que considerou-as ambíguas e difíceis de tocar nas rádios.
O nome 45 RPM (45 rotações por minuto) foi sugerido inicialmente em uma lista de nomes feita por uma amiga. Schiavon e Paulo gostaram do nome, mas tiraram o 45 e mudaram o Rotações por Revoluções. Convidaram o guitarrista Fernando Deluqui (ex-guitarrista da cantora May East, ex-integrante da Gang 90 e as Absurdettes) e o baterista Charles Gavin (ex-Ira!, futuro baterista dos Titãs) para completar o grupo. Já batizados de RPM, conseguiram um contrato com a gravadora Sony Music, com o compacto de 1984, que viria com as faixas "Louras Geladas" (a música virou um hit das danceterias e das paradas de sucesso das rádios) e "Revoluções por Minuto" (que foi censurada na época). "Louras Geladas" caiu no gosto do público de todo o país e levou a banda a gravar o seu álbum de estreia, já com o baterista Paulo P.A. Pagni (ex-Patife Band), que entrou para o RPM como convidado, no meio da gravação do LP, o que explica a sua ausência na capa do disco "Revoluções Por Minuto". Charles Gavin havia saído do grupo para se integrar aos Titãs.

[editar] 1985: Revoluções por Minuto

No mês de maio chega às lojas Revoluções Por Minuto, no vácuo de um país ainda perplexo com a morte de Tancredo Neves. O misto de paixão platônica e pretensa declaração de amor de "Olhar 43" emplaca nas rádios e abre caminho para que outras faixas, mais politizadas e/ou conceituais, façam o mesmo. As faixas do disco tratam também de temas como política internacional e transformações sócio-econômicas. As músicas são marcadas pela forte presença da bateria eletrônica e pelo clima soturno dos arranjos de Luiz Schiavon. O sucesso do álbum é tanto que o RPM emplaca rapidamente uma seqüência de hits no rádio (oito entre as onze faixas do álbum) e chega à marca de 100.000 LPs vendidos (disco de ouro). Revoluções por Minuto chegou a vender 300 mil cópias.

[editar] 1986: Rádio Pirata Ao Vivo

Logo depois dos primeiros shows de divulgação, o RPM fecha contrato com o megaempresário Manoel Poladian, que procurava uma banda em ascensão no rock brasileiro para o seu elenco de artistas platinados de MPB. Os costumeiros palcos das danceterias são trocados por uma megaprodução, com direito a Ney Matogrosso assinando luz e direção, canhões de raio laser e multidões espremidas em ginásios e estádios. A esta altura, Paulo Ricardo já é sex symbol: estampa diversas capas de revistas e enloquece garotas histéricas.
Sem “futuros hits” na manga e para manter a banda em alta, Poladian, músicos e gravadora lançam em julho de 1986, um novo álbum, com parte do registro de dois shows da histórica turnê. O repertório de Rádio Pirata Ao Vivo traz quatro gravações inéditas (sendo duas covers) e cinco faixas de Revoluções Por Minuto. Com a ajuda dos preços congelados do Plano Cruzado, 500 mil cópias são vendidas antecipadamente. As vendas de Rádio Pirata Ao Vivo disparam e chegam a 2,2 milhões. O RPM transforma-se na banda de maior vendagem da indústria fonográfica nacional até então.
Porém, o vocalista Paulo Ricardo passou a ser conhecido apenas como "sex symbol" e procurado e visto por jornalistas e fãs como se fosse modelo e não músico.

[editar] 1987: a primeira separação

Mesmo com todo o sucesso no Brasil e em países como França e Portugal, a banda, que inclusive ganhou uma edição especial do Globo Repórter em 1986, passava por uma situação difícil.
Em junho, houve o lançamento oficial de um disco mix, intitulado RPM & Milton, com a participação do cantor Milton Nascimento.
O fracasso do projeto RPM Discos, um selo próprio do grupo, acabou causando conflitos entre seus integrantes. Chegou-se a produzir um LP com o grupo paulista Cabine C (liderado pelo ex-Titã Ciro Pessoa), que prensado e distribuído pela RCA, foi um grande fracasso comercial. Ainda em 1987, Paulo Ricardo, Fernando, Schavion e P.A. anunciaram a separação oficial do grupo.

[editar] 1988: Quatro Coiotes

O grupo retomou as atividades em 1988, com o álbum "RPM" (mais conhecido como Quatro Coiotes), com uma tiragem inicial de 250 mil cópias. Na gravadora, o RPM ainda tinha destaque, pois chegara a empatar com Roberto Carlos em termos de vendagem, ainda a maior fonte de receita da empresa.
Separados há mais de seis meses, a banda ressurgia aparentemente mais amadurecida, com um disco basicamente com base na percussão (do brasileiro Paulinho da Costa, radicado nos EUA). O som é estritamente alto, com o instrumental sobrepondo-se às letras (todas, exceto "Ponto de Fuga", de Paulo Ricardo). Destacam-se também o erotismo de A Dália Negra e também a critica social de O Teu Futuro Espelha Essa Grandeza, com participação de Bezerra da Silva. O disco contou com tiragem inicial de 250 mil cópias (na época, disco de platina), que foram bem vendidas. Apesar disso, o número era um fracasso para os padrões do RPM, que se separa novamente.
Não se sabe a ocasião, mas o grupo ainda viria a realizar a regravação de "A página do relâmpago elétrico", de Ronaldo Bastos, em 1989.

[editar] 1993: Paulo Ricardo & RPM

Apesar de não contar com o tecladista Luiz Schiavon e com o baterista Paulo P.A. Pagni, este disco é considerado por muitos como o terceiro disco de estúdio da banda. Com Paulo Ricardo (voz e baixo), Fernando Deluqui (guitarras), Marquinho Costa (bateria) e Franco Júnior (teclados), este é o disco mais pesado da banda. Sem a influência de Schiavon a banda aposta em guitarras pesadas e solos bem construídos por Deluqui. O disco, mesmo apresentando excelente qualidade musical, não refletiu o sucesso nos palcos e nas vendas. Muitas bandas do rock brasileiro dos anos 80 caíram no ostracismo, principalmente com o fenômeno da música sertaneja e do axé music. Após a malfadada turnê do disco, Paulo e Fernando resolveram seguir caminhos diferentes. O guitarrista gravaria um disco solo e, em 1995, tocaria com os Engenheiros do Hawaii. Paulo Ricardo, por sua vez, trilharia os caminhos da MPB.

[editar] 2002: MTV RPM 2002

Em 2001, os quatro músicos do RPM se encontraram novamente para ensaiar, sem maiores pretensões, os antigos sucessos. Percebendo o entrosamento perfeito e a vontade de todos de estarem juntos novamente nos palcos, deram início ao retorno do RPM, inclusive com o retorno do empresário Manoel Poladian, considerado o "quinto coiote".
Em 2001 é lançado o single "Vida Real", um cover da música "Leef" do Holandês Han van Eijk, o tema oficial da primeira edição do mundo do reality show Big Brother, que foi escolhido como tema de abertura da edição brasileira do mesmo.
A banda voltou à mídia com o CD e DVD MTV RPM 2002, gravado no Teatro Procópio Ferreira, em São Paulo, nos dias 26 e 27 de março de 2002. Além dos grandes sucessos, a banda apresenta canções inéditas, como Carbono 14, Rainha, Vem Pra Mim e Onde Está o Meu Amor (gravada em estúdio e incluída na trilha sonora da novela Esperança, da (Rede Globo). Destacam-se também as participações do músico pernambucano Otto, no instrumental Naja (incluído apenas no DVD); de Roberto Frejat, do Barão Vermelho, na regravação de Exagerado, sucesso de Cazuza; e a participação virtual de Renato Russo na canção A Cruz e a Espada. O CD vendeu mais de 300.000 mil cópias, obtendo o disco de platina.
Em 2003, novamente com a MTV, participaram do projeto Luau MTV.

[editar] 2003: Nova separação

O grupo, com o sucesso do projeto da MTV, começou então uma nova turnê por todo o Brasil, que não durou muito tempo. Especulações dizem que a banda se separou após os outros integrantes descobrirem que Paulo Ricardo havia registrado todos os direitos em seu nome, iniciando uma disputa judicial pela marca RPM. Outros dizem que houve divergências quanto à sonoridade da banda.
Ainda nessa época seria lançado um novo CD do RPM, porém, com as divergências quanto a banda, o projeto foi abandonado.
Luiz Schiavon e Fernando Deluqui, juntamente com André Lazzarotto, lancaram o álbum LS&D (Viagem na Realidade) (2000 cópias foram lançadas). A música "Madrigal", que foi tema de abertura da telenovela Cabocla, foi bem executada.
Paulo Ricardo e o baterista Paulo P.A. Pagni formaram a banda PR.5. Mesmo com o fracasso do cd Zum Zum, Paulo Ricardo lançou a música Eu Quero Te Levar.
Paulo Ricardo lançou em 2006 o CD e DVD Acoustic Live, com covers de clássicos internacionais, como "Beautiful Girl" (INXS) e "Love Me Tender" (Elvis Presley). Nesse mesmo ano, no segundo semestre Paulo Ricardo, P.A e Luiz Schiavon tocaram juntos no programa Domingão do Faustão, um encontro memorável que relembrou grandes sucessos da banda RPM.

Em 2007, Paulo lança o CD Prisma, com uma pegada pop rock com as faixas "Diz" e "A Chegada", contando com os membros do PR.5 como músicos de apoio, inclusive o baterista Paulo P.A. Pagni e a participação de Luiz Schiavon na música "O dia D, A hora H".
Ainda em 2007, o grupo RPM tocou junto com todos os seus integrantes em São Paulo, com grande sucesso.
A banda anunciou o lançamento de uma caixa com os 3 primeiros álbuns da banda e mais um CD com remixes, covers e faixas não lançadas, junto com o DVD Rádio Pirata - O Show, contendo o registro de um show realizado em Dezembro de 1986, em São Paulo, filmado pela Rede Globo. Enquanto todos esperam o lançamento oficial, Paulo Ricardo, Luiz Schiavon, Fernando Deluqui e Paulo P.A. Pagni andam tocando juntos.
Luiz Schiavon até 2011, dirigiu, junto com o músico Marco Pontes (Caixote), um grupo musical no programa Domingão do Faustão, da Rede Globo.

Recentemente, após o lançamento da caixa Revolução! RPM 25 Anos, e após o especial Por Toda Minha Vida na Rede Globo, no fim de 2010, Paulo Ricardo postou em seu Twitter que a banda irá se reunir para gravar um novo álbum em 2011^[1]^[2]. Schiavon diz que estão vendo possibilidades para a volta aos palcos, já que sua banda no Domingão do Faustão não irá continuar em 2011.
Dias após aos boatos, Schiavon confirma em seu twitter que a banda já está compondo para o novo álbum. O álbum terá 13 faixas. Segundo Paulo Ricardo, a banda quer fazer um som que lembre bandas atuais que misturam rock com música eletrônica como Muse, The Killers, Blur, entre outros^[3]. Houve alguns boatos em relação ao produtor Liminha, que foi responsável pela produção de grande parte das bandas da década de 80 e 90, como Titãs, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Ultraje a Rigor, Ira!, Kid Abelha, Cidade Negra, Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, O Rappa, entre outros. Mas o álbum foi produzido por Paulo e Schiavon. Além disso, os shows terão a direção de Ulysses Cruz e a banda irá se apresentar na quarta edição do Rock In Rio que acontece em setembro^[4].
A pré-estreia da Tour 2011, aconteceu no honrado evento de São Paulo "Virada Cultural". Um mês após esta apresentação, foi divulgado o título do álbum, chamado Elektra e foi disponibilizado quatro músicas para download no site oficial da banda.^[5]
A estreia da nova turnê será no dia 20 de maio de 2011, no Credicard Hall, em São Paulo. No entanto, no dia 15 de maio de 2011 a banda se apresentou no programa Domingão do Faustão.

Em dezembro de 2007, o livro "Revelações Por Minuto" foi lançado, contando os detalhes da trajetória da banda, desde seu início (1984) até o fim (1989). O livro foi promovido em uma grande coletiva de imprensa em São Paulo, contando com a presença do autor, Marcelo Leite de Moraes, e os quatro integrantes da banda.

Luan Santana começou a cantar aos três anos de idade, na sua cidade natal, Campo Grande – MS, ele já chamava atenção de toda a família com os acordes afinados das músicas sertanejas que não parava de cantar. Percebendo o seu talento, o pai deu de presente um violão, para incentivar ainda mais o pequeno cantor. A partir desse momento as apresentações ganharam uma atração a mais, Luan cantava e ‘tentava’ dedilhar algumas notas musicais no instrumento, que se tornou inseparável a partir daí.

2008-2009: Início da carreira e Tô de CaraJá que a agenda lotada não permitia que Luan Santana parasse e entrasse em estúdio para gravar o segundo CD, ele decidiu que o trabalho seria ao vivo e gravado em diversas cidades do Brasil por onde apresentava seu show. Assim que o CD ficou pronto, duas músicas começaram a aparecer como as preferidas do público de Luan Santana – “Tô de Cara” e "Meteoro" com isso ele começa a ser um dos artistas mais executados das rádios do Brasil e em poucas semanas o vídeo “Meteoro” atinge a marca de 10 milhões de acesso no Youtube. No verão de 2009, começa a explosão do jovem cantor, Luan quebra todos os recordes de público pelas cidades onde se apresenta, conquistando cada vez mais fãs e seguidores por onde passa.

Com o sucesso das músicas deste CD, em agosto ele novamente é convidado a participar da ‘Festa do Peão de Barretos’ e desta vez, se apresentou para um público de 50 mil pessoas, que cantam junto com ele seus principais sucessos. Luan recebeu destaque da mídia especializada de Barretos que o consideraram um dos maiores exemplos de ‘fenômeno da música sertaneja’. Viajando por todo Brasil para mostrar seu novo trabalho, Luan leva para estrada um espetáculo de luzes, som e efeitos especiais com uma grande produção, digna de um grande artista, que o Brasil já começa a conhecer, através do inconfundível timbre de voz e pelo carisma que tem no palco - marca registrada deste jovem, que promete mexer com o mercado sertanejo. Luan Santana participa de grandes eventos sertanejos como Caldas Country, Festa do Peão de Barretos, além das principais Festas de Peão e Exposições Agropecuárias de todo Brasil. 2009-2010: Luan Santana Ao VivoContratado pela gravadora Som Livre, em novembro Luan lança seu primeiro DVD que foi gravado em 25 de agosto de 2009 no Parque das Nações Indígenas em Campo Grande que chegou as lojas no inico de Dezembro. Em 13 de fevereiro de 2010, foi hospitalizado na cidade de Araranguá, em Santa Catarina, com fortes dores no estômago, sendo diagnosticado com uma gastroenterite combinada com uma virose, fazendo com que sua participação no Carnaval de Salvador fosse cancelada. Neste dia Luan Santana reuniu 85 mil pessoas para esta sua única apresentação e bateu seu próprio recorde de público, que antes era de 70 mil pessoas em um show realizado em junho do mesmo ano no Parque de Exposições de Campo Grande MS. Em Janeiro de 2010 Luan Santana faz uma participação de uma semana na Novela da Rede Globo, Malhação, interpretando ele mesmo, e participa de todos os maiores programas da Tv Brasileira como o primeiro ídolo Teen Sertanejo. Em participação recente no prêmio Melhores do Ano, no Domingão do Faustão da Rede Globo, Luan consagrou-se vencedor na categoria Revelação do Ano.[6]

2011-Atualmente: Desempenho nacional e segundo DVDO segundo álbum ao vivo do Luan Santana, intitulado Luan Santana Ao Vivo no Rio foi gravado no dia 11 de dezembro de 2010 na HSBC Arena, na Barra da Tijuca, zona oeste do Rio de Janeiro. O cantor apresentou uma megaprodução que teve direito a até uma catapulta-a mesma que Michael Jackson usaria em seu show This Is It antes de morrer em junho de 2009- O músico apresentou 15 canções inéditas, entre elas A Bússola, Não Era pra Ser, Super-Herói e Palácios e Castelos, o cantor também recebeu Ivete Sangalo para cantar outra música inédita: Química do Amor Ele também cantou, além de Adrenalina, outras quatro músicas de seus três primeiros CDs: “Tô de Cara”; "Meteoro";"Você não Sabe o que É Amor" e Vou Voar (essa com mais efeitos visuais).

Sob a assessoria do ilusionista Issao Imamura, o cantor "voou" bem alto até o teto da arena, içado por uma corda de aço. Depois de Ivete, ele se apresentou ao lado da espanhola Belinda, cantora naturalizada mexicana, na canção Meu Menino, Minha Menina, mais uma exclusiva.Luan também cantou com Zezé di Camargo & Luciano. Segundo a assessoria de Luan, foram investidos R$ 4 milhões na produção do DVD, que ainda contou com um staff de 800 profissionais e em torno de 25 carretas para transportar equipamentos.

Luan santana deixou bem claro que uns dos seus sonhos de duetos era cantar com Ivete Sangalo e agora sua meta é estar no palco do 3° DVD que tem prévia para 2013 e quer fazer um lindo dueto com Joelma Mendes Do Calypso.

The Bio History of Michael Joseph Jackson began when he was born on the 29th of August 1958 in Gary, Indiana. He was the 7th of nine children. (brothers: Sigmund "Jackie", Toriano "Tito", Jermaine, Marlon, Steven "Randy", and sisters Rebbie, Janet and La-Toya Jackson.

Michael began his musical career at the age of 5 as the lead singer of the Jackson 5 who formed in 1964. In these early years the Jackson 5, Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon and lead singer Michael played local clubs and bars in Gary Indiana and moving further afield as there talents grew and they could compete in bigger competitions. From these early days Michael would be at the same clubs as big talented stars of there days, such as Jackie Wilson and would be learning from them even back then.

In 1968 the Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers discovered the Jackson five and from there they got an audition for Berry Gordy of Motown Records. The Jackson 5 signed for Motown and moved to California. Their first 4 singles, "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save", and "I'll Be There" all made US No1 hits. The Jackson 5 recorded 14 albums and Michael recorded 4 solo albums with Motown.

The Jackson 5 stayed with Motown until 1976, wanting more artistic freedom they felt they had to move on and signed up with Epic. The group name Jackson 5 had to be changed as it was owned by Motown, so they reverted to The Jacksons as they had be known in the early days. Brother Jermaine married Berry Gordy's daughter and stayed with Motown. Youngest brother Randy joined in his place. The Jacksons had a number of hit records and in total made 6 albums between the years of 1976 and 1984.

In 1977 Michael made his first film debut when he starred in the musical 'The Wiz' playing Scarecrow with Diana Ross in the lead role of Dorothy. It was at this time Michael met Quincy Jones who was doing the score for the film.

Michael teamed up with Quincey Jones as his producer for his first solo album with Epic Records. The album titled "Off The Wall" was a big success around the world and the first ever album to release a record breaking 4 No1 singles in the US.

In 1982 Michael Jackson released the world's largest selling album of all time, 'Thriller'. This album produced 7 hit singles, breaking yet again more records, and went on to sell over 50 million copies worldwide. Michael was keen to use music video or short films as he called them to promote his singles from the album. He worked with the best directors and producers, using the latest technology and special effects for the hit song 'Billie Jean' The short film 'Thriller' used the latest make-up artists technolgy combined with fantastic dancing and cherography, to produce a 14 minute video, with a start, a middle and an ending. So successful was this video that 'The Making Of Michael Jackson's Thriller' became the world's largest selling home video combined with soaring album sales. In 1983 Michael performed the now legendary moonwalk for the first time on the 'Motown 25 years' anniversary show. This performance alone set Michael undoubtable into the realm of a superstar.

In 1984 Michael won a record breaking 8 Grammy awards in one night. The awards were for his work on the 'Thriller' album and his work on the narrative for the 'ET Storybook'.

On December 9th 1984 at the last concert of the Jackson's Victory Tour, Michael announced he was splitting from the group and going solo.

In 1987 Michael released his much awaited third solo album, titled 'Bad', and lauched his record breaking first solo world tour. 1988, Michael wrote his first autobiography, Moonwalk, talking for the first time on his childhood and his career. At the end of the 1980s Michael was named 'Artist Of The Decade' for his success off of his 'Thriller' and 'Bad' albums.

In 1991 Michael signed with Sony Music the largest ever recording contract and released his fourth solo album, 'Dangerous'. He toured world again in 1992, taking his concerts to countries that had never before been visited by a pop/rock artist. Also Michael founded the 'Heal the World Foundation' to help improve the lives of children across the world.

In 1994 Michael married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of rock legend Elvis Presley. The marriage only lasted for 19 months, as they divorced in 1996.

1995 saw Michael release a fifth solo album, 'HIStory', which was a double album, first half new material and second half half greatest hits. Michael toured again over a legs covering a 2 year period. In between legs of the tour on November 14th 1996, Michael married for his second time to Debbie Rowe who was a nurse that Michael had met in the treatment of his skin pigment disorder. Together they had their first child Prince Michael Joseph Jackson jr born on February 13 1997 and a daughter Paris Michael Katherine Jackson born on April 3rd 1998.

In 1997 Michael released the remix album 'Blood On The Dance Floor' which also contained 5 new song linked with a 38min film "Ghosts". This film Michael played 5 roles using the latest special effects and make-up artistry, combined with his dance and music.

In September, 2001 Michael celebrated his 30th anniversary as a solo artist with two concerts to be held in New York, USA. Many artists such as Whitney Houston, Usher, Destinys Child, Shaggy and many more performed there own and Michael Jacksons past songs. Michael then reunited with all of his brothers and performed there biggest hits. Michael then went onto perform solo some of his biggest hits.

In October 2001 Michael released the album 'Invincible' releasing only 2 singles including the big hit "You Rock My World". Shortly after the albums release there were rumours of a rift with Sony Music and a clear lack of promotion of the album. The second single "Cry" was released with a very poor music video which did not feature Michael and no other singles were released.

In November 2003 a new single "One More Chance" was released as a single and was also a track on new compilaition album "Number Ones".

In March 2009, Michael annouced a shock comeback tour at the O2 Arena in London to start in July 2009, intially for 10 dates but the total grew to a sold out 50 dates with over 750,000 tickets sold. All sold tickets sold out within minutes of being released.

On June 25th 2009 Michael Jackson died suddenly of a reported cardiac arrest. He was 50 years old.

Michael Joseph Jackson, (Gary, Indiana, Estados Unidos, 29 de Agosto de 1958 - 25 de Junho de 2009), foi um grande cantor, compositor, dançarino, ator, produtor, empresário e filantropo, que em pouco tempo se tornou a figura mais talentosa e aclamada da música pop, fazendo videoclipes e performances sempre elogiadas e batendo milhares de recordes.

O rei do pop vendeu mais de 750 milhões de álbuns, emplacando sucessos desde pequeno, é tido como o maior revolucionário do videoclipe e da dança e o maior artista de todos os tempos (certificado pelo Guinness Book). Em 45 anos de carreira e milhares de fãs espalhados pelo mundo, ainda foi reconhecido por seus escândalos na vida pessoal e por ser dono do álbum mais vendido de todos os tempos: Thriller, com cerca de 65 milhões de cópias vendidas e após sua morte chegando a incrivel marca de 100 milhões de cópias, até 2010.

Foram cerca de 30 milhões de cópias vendidas, nada igual a Thriller, mais uma marca muito considerável, tornando-se o álbum mais vendido daquela época. Nas paradas, o álbum bateu recordes, colocando 5 músicas direto no 1° lugar (entre elas Bad e The Way You Make Me Feel e Man In The Mirror). Em 2001, após 6 anos sem lançar um álbum inédito, lançou Invincible que, graças a brigas entre ele e a gravadora Sony, teve uma baixa divulgação e não obteve o sucesso esperado. Com 8 milhões de cópias vendidas até hoje, sendo 5.5 milhões delas nos 2 primeiros meses, Invincible ainda conseguiu emplacar o hit You Rock My World.

Muitas polêmicas giravam em torno de sua vida pessoal. Sua infância foi marcada pelas agressões que ele e seus irmãos recebiam do seu pai Joseph Jackson, mais tarde também passou por problemas com sua aparência, devido à puberdade e acidentes em ensaios.

Na vida adulta, mais problemas: em 1993 o cantor foi acusado de abusar de um menor de 13 anos e, apesar de se declarar inocente, pagou uma alta quantia em dinheiro para a família do adolescente, que retirou a acusação. Segundo o cantor, ele queria apenas terminar com aquele pesadelo e seguir sua carreira sem precisar manchá-la ainda mais com problemas.

Em 2003 foi acusado novamente pelo mesmo motivo, e, apesar de ter sido muito criticado pela mídia, que criava boatos constantemente, o cantor foi à julgamento, sendo inocentado da acusação. Apesar da absolvição, a imagem do cantor ficou ainda mais “manchada”.

Outras polêmicas cercavam sua vida, como o dia em que ele mostrou seu 3º filho pela janela aos fãs que gritavam em frente ao hotel, ou então das plásticas que mudaram completamente o seu rosto e ainda sobre a cor de sua pele, que segundo ele, ficou branca por causa da doença vitiligo e outras não comentadas. Com 50 anos e 3 filhos, em fevereiro de 2008 a SonyBMG lançou Thriller 25th Anniversary, o relançamento do álbum mais vendido da história da musica. Em uma nova versão com remixes inéditos e que já vendeu mais de 3 milhões de cópias pelo mundo.

Em março de 2009 anunciou a volta aos palcos, após quase uma década, para uma série de 50 shows em Londres chamada This Is It que iniciaria-se em julho do mesmo ano e que daria ao cantor a sua aposentadoria. Incrivelmente, todos os 1 milhão de ingressos disponíveis foram vendidos em algumas horas, um marco nunca ocorrido antes na história do showbiz. Um novo álbum de inéditas também era esperado, porém uma tragédia fatal ainda estaria por vir:

No dia 25 de Junho de 2009, poucos dias antes de iniciar a megaturnê “This Is It”, deu entrada no UCLA Medical Center em Los Angeles, depois de sofrer uma parada cardíaca. Após várias notícias desencontradas, por volta das 18:00 (Horário de Los Angeles) foi anunciada oficialmente a morte do Rei do Pop. Foi vítima de uma parada cardiorrespiratória em sua casa, na vizinhança de Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, CA, Estados Unidos. Os serviços de emergência médica socorreram o cantor em sua casa, na tentativa de reanimá-lo. Porém, como Jackson se encontrava em estado de coma profundo, ele foi levado às pressas para o hospital universitário da Universidade da Califórnia em Los Angeles (UCLA). Desde sua internação, rumores haviam se espalhado pela imprensa confirmando seu falecimento.

Às 2h e 06min UTC-8 de 25 de junho de 2009, o site Los Angeles Times tornou-se um dos primeiros a divulgar a morte do astro. Seu falecimento teve uma repercussão internacional instantânea, sendo motivo de preocupação por parte dos fãs em muitas partes do mundo. Defronte ao hospital da UCLA, muitos fãs do cantor cercaram o prédio à procura de informações sobre a suposta ‘morte’ de Michael. Porém, pouco tempo depois da internação, sua morte foi absolutamente confirmada pelo porta-voz do Instituto Médico Legal de Los Angeles, Fred Corral. Uma posterior análise por peritos e um exame toxicológico estarão sendo feitos no corpo do cantor para saber o horário e a razão de sua morte.

Após a sua morte, voltou a bater recordes nunca acontecidos antes, em menos de seis horas, seu nome apareceu no topo das buscas de agregadores de blogs de MP3 (como o Hype Machine), de redes sociais (como a própria Last.fm) e de lojas online (como a Amazon e iTunes). Na Amazon, o rei do pop conseguiu mais um feito espetacular, mesmo depois de morto. Nada menos do que 18 discos entre os mais vendidos da loja eram ou do cantor ou de sua banda com seus irmãos, o The Jackson 5. Segundo notícia do Financial Times, nas 24 horas após a morte do Popstar a Amazon vendeu um numero de álbuns de Michael semelhante ao que tinha vendido nos últimos 11 anos. E a varejista de música HMV diz que os cds do cantor venderam 80 vezes mais. Além das vendas terem crescido repentinamente, os serviços e acessos na internet também sofreram impacto.

A notícia mexeu com a internet de forma que não bastasse ter derrubado os servidores do Twitter no breve intervalo entre o anúncio de que Michael estava sendo transportado para um hospital em uma ambulância e a confirmação de sua morte, a rede social tornou-se o principal canal para saber o que estava acontecendo com o cantor. Todos linkavam todos e logo que sua morte foi confirmada, dominou nove dos 10 tópicos de discussão do dia - na décima posição, a pantera Farrah Fawcett, que também morreu no mesmo dia. Foi o suficiente para que o Twitter não suportasse a quantidade de acessos. Não foi só o Twitter. Segundo Shawn White, diretor de operações da Keynote System, empresa que monitora o tráfego na web, “a velocidade média de download em sites de notícias dobrou de menos de quatro segundo para quase nove segundos”, disse em entrevista à BBC.

No dia 7 de julho de 2009 foi feito um memorial e funeral para o cantor nos Estados Unidos. Exibido nos canais de todo o mundo, foi uma das maiores audiências já vistas em todos os tempos. Além disso é sinônimo de uma época em que o sucesso de um artista era medido em discos vendidos - uma era que metaforicamente morre junto com ele.

O Festival da Pinga Foi criado em 1982 pela associação comercial e industrial de Paraty com a finalidade de divulgar a tradicional aguardente local. A data escolhida, o terceiro final de semana de agosto, tem a intenção de atrair turistas em um mês considerado de baixa estação. Consta de stands dos engenhos produtores de cachaça e de shows musicais. A produção de aguardente em Paraty data do séc. XVII e de tão famosa incorporou o nome da cidade: Paraty é sinônimo de pinga. Em sua fabricação se destila o caldo de cana fermentado e não o já fervido para apurar o açúcar.

TIKRIT, Iraque, 28 Jul 2011 (AFP) -Pelo menos 12 pessoas morreram e 28 ficaram feridas nesta quinta-feira em um atentado com um carro-bomba e um ataque de um kamikaze que carregava explosivos dentro de seu casaco na frente de um banco em Tikrit, a 160 km ao norte de Bagdá, informou um responsável pelos serviços de saúde da província.

"Às 11h45m (horário local, 08h45m GMT), um carro-bomba explodiu e mais tarde um homem cometeu um atentado suicida em frente ao banco Rafidain, no centro de Tikrit", contou à AFP Rad al Juburi, chefe do Departamento de Saúde da província de Salahedin.

União Estável entre Homossexuais

Pesquisa do Ibope mostra que 55% dos brasileiros são contra união estável entre homossexuais

RIO - O Ibope divulgou nesta quinta-feira uma pesquisa em que revela que 55% dos brasileiros se declararam contra a união estável entre pessoas do mesmo sexo. Com isso, a maioria se demonstrou contra a decisão do Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) que, em maio deste ano, reconheceu por unanimidade a união civil entre homossexuais.

Entre os homens, 63% disseram ser contra a decisão do STF. Já entre as mulheres, esse percentual é de 48%. Entre os jovens de 16 a 24 anos, 60% são favoráveis à união estável entre homossexuais e, entre os maiores de 50 anos, 73% se disseram contrários.

A pesquisa também fez perguntas sobre a opinião dos entrevistados com relação à adoção de crianças por casais homossexuais: 55% se declaram contrários. Entre os homens, 62% disseram não concordar que casais do mesmo sexo adotem uma criança.

A pesquisa ouviu 2.002 pessoas entre os dias 14 e 18 de julho.

Tragedy in Norway

Last Friday in central Oslo, Norway, a massive explosion ripped through government buildings and sent debris flying through the streets, killing eight people and wounding 15. Some 90 minutes later, Anders Behring Breivik, the man accused of building and detonating that bomb, boarded a ferry to a small island that was hosting a Labour Party youth camp. Breivik, reportedly dressed as a policeman, lured the young campers close and opened fire. The shooting spree went on for more than an hour. By the time police finally arrived and arrested Breivik, at least 68 of the campers had been killed. Norway spent the weekend in mourning, and the country will face more difficulty in the weeks ahead as funerals and criminal proceedings take place. Amy Jade Winehouse (14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011) was an English singer-songwriter known for her powerful contralto vocals[1] and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz.[2]

Winehouse's 2003 debut album, Frank, was critically successful in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album, Back to Black, led to six Grammy Award nominations and five wins, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British female to win five Grammys,[3][4] including three of the "Big Four": Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. On 14 February 2007, she won a BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist; she had also been nominated for Best British Album. She won the Ivor Novello Award three times, one in 2004 for Best Contemporary Song (musically and lyrically) for "Stronger Than Me", one in 2007 for Best Contemporary Song for "Rehab", and one in 2008 for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for "Love Is a Losing Game", among other distinctions. The album was the third biggest seller of the 2000s in the United Kingdom.[5]

Winehouse was credited as an influence in the rise in popularity of female musicians and soul music, and also for revitalising British music. Winehouse's distinctive style made her a muse for fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld. Winehouse's problems with drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and her self-destructive behaviours were regular tabloid news from 2007 until her death. She and her former husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were plagued by legal troubles that left him serving prison time. In 2008, Winehouse faced a series of health complications that threatened both her career and her life.[6][7]

Winehouse died at the age of 27 on 23 July 2011, at her home in London;[8][9] police have said that the cause of her death is "as yet unexplained".[10][11][12] Winehouse's family and friends attended her funeral on 26 July 2011 to pay their tributes.[13][14]

Early lifeWinehouse was born in the Southgate area of north London to a Jewish family,[15] who were influential toward her interest in jazz.[16] Winehouse was the daughter of Mitchell Winehouse, a taxi driver, and Janis Winehouse (née Seaton), a pharmacist. She had one brother, Alex, who was four years older than her.[17] Mitchell often sang Frank Sinatra songs to young Amy, who also took to a constant habit of singing to the point that teachers found it difficult keeping her quiet in class.[18] Winehouse's parents separated when she was nine.[19]

When Winehouse was nine years old, her grandmother, Cynthia, suggested she attend the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School for further training.[20] At age ten, Winehouse founded a short-lived rap group called Sweet 'n' Sour with childhood friend Juliette Ashby.[21] She stayed at the Earnshaw school for four years before seeking full time training at Sylvia Young Theatre School, but was allegedly expelled at 14 for "not applying herself" and for piercing her nose.[17][22] With other children from the Sylvia Young School, she appeared in an episode of The Fast Show in 1997.[23] She later attended The Mount School, Mill Hill, the BRIT School in Selhurst, Croydon, Southgate School and Ashmole School.[24][25][26][27]

Music careerEarly careerAfter toying with her brother's guitar, Winehouse received her first guitar when she was 13, and began writing music a year later. She began working soon after, including as a showbiz journalist for the World Entertainment News Network, in addition to singing with local group the Bolsha Band.[17][28] Her boyfriend at the time, soul singer Tyler James, sent her demo tape to an A&R person.[16] Winehouse signed to Simon Fuller's 19 Management in 2002. While being developed by the management company, the artist was kept an industry secret.[29] Her future A&R representative at Island/Universal, Darcus Beese, heard her by accident when the manager of The Lewinson Brothers showed him some productions of his clients on which Winehouse featured as vocalist. When he asked who the singer was the manager told him he was not allowed to say. Having decided that he wanted to sign her it took several months of asking around for Beese to eventually discover who the singer was. By this time Winehouse had already recorded a number of songs and signed a publishing deal with EMI. Through the publishers she formed a working relationship with the producer Salaam Remi.[29]

Beese introduced Winehouse to his boss, Nick Gatfield, and the Island head shared his enthusiasm in signing the young artist. Winehouse was signed to Island/Universal as rival interest in Winehouse had started to build, with representatives at EMI and Virgin also starting to make moves. Beese told HitQuarters that he felt the reason behind the excitement over an artist who was an atypical pop star for the time was due to a backlash against reality TV music shows with audiences becoming starved for genuine young talent.[29]

Winehouse's greatest love was 1960s girl groups. She borrowed her "instantly recognisable" beehive hairdo (a weave[30]) and Cleopatra makeup from The Ronettes.[31]

Major label success and Frank

Performing at the Bowery Ballroom, New York City in 2007Winehouse's debut album, Frank, was released on 20 October 2003. Produced mainly by Salaam Remi, many songs were influenced by jazz and, apart from two covers, every song was co-written by Winehouse. The album received positive reviews[32][33] with compliments over the "cool, critical gaze" in its lyrics[2] and brought comparisons of her voice to Sarah Vaughan,[34] Macy Gray and others.[2]

The album entered the upper levels of the UK album chart in 2004 when it was nominated for BRIT Awards in the categories of "British Female Solo Artist" and "British Urban Act". It went on to achieve platinum sales.[35] Later in 2004, she won the Ivor Novello (songwriting) Award for Best Contemporary Song, alongside Salaam Remi, with her contribution to the first single, "Stronger Than Me".[36] The album also made the short list for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize. In the same year, she performed at the Glastonbury Festival, the V Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival (7 July 2004, at the Club Soda), and on the Jazzworld stage. After the release of the album, Winehouse commented that she was "only 80 percent behind [the] album" because of the inclusion by her record label of certain songs and mixes she disliked.[16] Additional singles from the album were "Take the Box", "In My Bed"/"You Sent Me Flying" and "Pumps"/"Help Yourself".

International success and Back to BlackIn contrast to her jazz-influenced former album, Winehouse's focus shifted to the girl groups of the 1950s and 1960s. Winehouse hired New York singer Sharon Jones's longtime band, the Dap-Kings to back her up in the studio and on tour.[37] In May 2006, Winehouse's demonstration tracks such as "You Know I'm No Good" and "Rehab" appeared on Mark Ronson's New York radio show on East Village Radio. These were some of the first new songs played on the radio after the release of "Pumps" and both were slated to appear on her second album. The 11-track album was produced entirely by Salaam Remi and Ronson, with the production credits being split between them. Ronson said in a 2010 interview that he liked working with Winehouse because she was blunt when she did not like his work.[38] Promotion of Back to Black soon began and, in early October 2006, Winehouse's official website was relaunched with a new layout and clips of previously unreleased songs.[35] Back to Black was released in the UK on 30 October 2006. It went to number one on the UK Albums Chart numerous times, and entered at number seven on the Billboard 200 in the United States. It was the best-selling album in the UK in 2007, selling 1.85 million copies over the year.[39]

The album spawned a number of singles. The first single released from the album was the Ronson-produced "Rehab". The song reached the top ten in the UK and the US.[40] Time magazine named "Rehab" the Best Song of 2007. Writer Josh Tyrangiel praised Winehouse for her confidence, saying, "What she is is mouthy, funny, sultry, and quite possibly crazy" and "It's impossible not to be seduced by her originality. Combine it with production by Mark Ronson that references four decades worth of soul music without once ripping it off, and you've got the best song of 2007."[41] The album's second single and lead single in the US, "You Know I'm No Good", was released in January 2007 with a remix featuring rap vocals by Ghostface Killah. It ultimately reached number 18 on the UK singles chart. The title track, "Back to Black", was released in the UK in April 2007 and peaked at number 25, but was more successful across mainland Europe.[42] "Tears Dry on Their Own", "Love Is a Losing Game" and "Just Friends" were also released as singles, but failed to achieve the same level of success.[43]

A deluxe edition of Back to Black was also released on 5 November 2007 in the UK. The bonus disc features B-sides, rare, and live tracks, as well as "Valerie". Winehouse's debut DVD I Told You I Was Trouble: Live in London was released the same day in the UK and 13 November in the US. It includes a live set recorded at London's Shepherds Bush Empire and a 50-minute documentary charting the singer's career over the previous four years.[44] Frank was released in the United States on 20 November 2007 to positive reviews.[45][46] The album debuted at number 61 on the Billboard 200 chart.[47]

In addition to her own album, she collaborated with other artists on singles. Winehouse was a vocalist on the song "Valerie" on Ronson's solo album Version. The song peaked at number two in the UK, upon its October single release. The song was nominated for a 2008 Brit Award for "Best British Single".[48][49][50] Her work with ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena, "B Boy Baby", was released on 17 December 2007. It served as the fourth single from Buena's solo debut album, Real Girl.[51]

Continued success and acclaim

The singer won 2008 Grammy Awards in the categories of Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the single "Rehab", while her album Back to Black was nominated for Album of the Year and won the Best Pop Vocal Album award.[52][53] Producer Mark Ronson's work with her won the award in the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical category.[54] The singer also earned a Grammy in the Best New Artist category. This earned Winehouse an entry in the 2009 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Grammy Awards won by a British Female Act.[55] She performed "You Know I’m No Good" and "Rehab" at the awards ceremony via satellite, as her visa approval came through too late for her to travel to the US. She said "This is for London because Camden town is burning down", in reference to the Camden Market fire.[56] After the Grammy Awards, album sales increased catapulting Back to Black to number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 after initially peaking at number seven.[57] On 13 January 2008, Back to Black held the number one position on the Billboard Pan European charts for the third straight week.[58] In January 2008, Universal Music International said it believed that there was a correlation between number of albums sold and the extensive media coverage the singer had received.[59]

The original edition of the album resided at the number 30 position, in its 68th week on the charts, while "Frank" charted at number 35.[60] By 12 March, the album had sold a total of 2,467,575 copies, 318,350 of those in the previous 10 weeks, putting the album on the UK's top 10 best-selling albums of the 21st century for the first time.[61] On 7 April, Back to Black was residing at the top position on the pan-European charts for the sixth consecutive and thirteenth aggregate week.[62] Back to Black was the world's seventh biggest selling album for 2008.[63] These sales helped keep Universal Music's recorded music division from dropping to levels experienced by the overall music market.[64]

At the 2008 Ivor Novello Awards, Winehouse became the first artist to receive two nominations for the top award, best song, musically and lyrically. She won the award for "Love Is a Losing Game" and was nominated for "You Know I'm No Good".[65] "Rehab", a Novello winner for best contemporary song in 2006, also received a 2008 nomination for best-selling British song.[66] Winehouse was nominated for a MTV Europe Award in the Act of The Year category.[67] Amy Winehouse – The Girl Done Good: A Documentary Review, a 78-minute DVD, was released on 14 April 2008. The documentary features interviews with those who knew her at a young age, helped her gain success, jazz music experts, as well as music and pop culture specialists.[68][69] A clip of Winehouse's music was included in the "Roots and Influences" area that looked at connections between different artists at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC, which opened in December 2008. One thread started with Billie Holiday continued with Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige and finished with Winehouse.[70] In a poll of United States residents conducted for VisitBritain by Harris Interactive that was released in March 2009, one fifth of those polled indicated they had listened to Winehouse's music during the previous year.[71] Winehouse performed with Rhythms del Mundo on their cover of the Sam Cooke song "Cupid" for an Artists Project Earth benefit album that was released on 13 July 2009.[72][73]

Final projectsWinehouse and Mark Ronson contributed a cover of Lesley Gore's "It's My Party" to the Quincy Jones tribute album Q Soul Bossa Nostra released 9 November 2010.[74] Winehouse and drummer ?uestlove of the Roots had agreed to form a group. Winehouse's problems obtaining a visa delayed the still unnamed group from working together. Producer Salaam Remi had already created some material with Winehouse as part of the project.[75] According to a newspaper report, Universal Music pressed her regarding new material in 2008. According to that same report Winehouse as of 2 September had not been near a recording studio. It was noted that she had touring obligations during the summer and also that if an album was quickly recorded, it would be at least a year before an album could be released.[64] In late October, Winehouse's spokesman was quoted as saying that Winehouse had not been given a deadline to complete her third album, for which she was learning to play drums.[76]

During her 2009 stay in Saint Lucia, Winehouse worked on new music with producer Salaam Remi. Island claimed that a new album would be due in 2010; Island co-president Darcus Beese said, "I've heard a couple of song demos that have absolutely floored me".[77] In July 2010 Winehouse was quoted as saying her next album would be released no later than January 2011, saying "It’s going to be very much the same as my second album, where there's a lot of jukebox stuff and songs that are... just jukebox, really." Mark Ronson said in July 2010 that he had not started to record the album.[78]

American singer Tony Bennett recorded a song with Winehouse for his forthcoming album, Duets II, which is scheduled for release on 20 September 2011 (almost two months after her death).[79]

Influence on the music industryBritish singer Adele had credited Winehouse's success in the United States for making her and fellow British singer Duffy's journey to the United States "a bit smoother".[80] American singer Lady Gaga credited Winehouse with paving the way for her rise to the top of the charts. She appeared to be using a metaphorical analogy to explain that Winehouse made it easier for unconventional women to have mainstream pop success.[81] The "Winehouse phenomenon" has been credited by Sebastian Danchin, author of Encyclopedia of Rhythm & Blues and Soul, of kick-starting a revival of soul music that has been ongoing since 2000. Danchin quoting Raphael Saadiq, Anthony Hamilton, and John Legend said "Amy Winehouse was produced by people who wanted to create a marketing coup. The positive side is that it reacquainted an audience with this music and played an introductory role for others. This reinvigorated the genre by overcoming the vintage aspect".[82]

The release of Back to Black and the emergence of Lily Allen has been credited by The Sunday Times as directly creating the market for the media proclaimed "the year of the women" in 2009 which has seen five female artists nominated for the Mercury Prize. After the album was released record companies sought out female artists with a similar sound and fearless and experimental female musicians in general. Adele and Duffy were the second wave of artists with a sound similar to Winehouse's. A third wave of female musicians that has emerged since the album was released are led by VV Brown, Florence and the Machine, La Roux and Little Boots.[83] In February 2010, rapper Jay-Z credited Winehouse with revitalising British music, saying, "There's a strong push coming out of London right now, which is great. It's been coming ever since I guess Amy (Winehouse). I mean always, but I think Amy, this resurgence was ushered in by Amy."[84] In March 2011 the New York Daily News ran an article attributing the continuing wave of British female artists that have been successful in the United States to Winehouse and her absence. Spin magazine music editor Charles Aaron was quoted as saying "Amy Winehouse was the Nirvana moment for all these women," "They can all be traced back to her in terms of attitude, musical styles or fashion". According to Keith Caulfield chart manager for Billboard "Because of Amy, or the lack thereof, the marketplace was able to get singers like Adele and Duffy," "Now those ladies have brought on the new ones, like Eliza Doolittle, Rumer and Ellie."[85]

Live performances

Amy Winehouse with her band backstage, March 16, 2009Winehouse toured in conjunction with the Back to Black album's release. She performed headlining gigs in September and November 2006, including one of the Little Noise Sessions charity concerts at the Union Chapel, Islington. On 31 December 2006, Winehouse appeared on Jools Holland's Annual Hootenanny and performed a cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" along with Paul Weller and Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. She also performed Toots & the Maytals' "Monkey Man". She began a run of another 14 gigs beginning in February 2007. At his request, Bruce Willis introduced Winehouse before her performance of "Rehab" at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. Winehouse made awards organizers nervous when she went on a Las Vegas jaunt in the hours before the show.[86] During the summer of 2007, Winehouse performed at various festivals, including UK's Glastonbury Festival,[87] Chicago's Lollapalooza festival, Rock Werchter and Baltimore's Virgin Music Festival.

Winehouse's tour, however, did not go as well. In November 2007, the opening night of a 17-date tour was marred by booing and walkouts at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. A music critic for the Birmingham Mail said it was "one of the saddest nights of my life...I saw a supremely talented artist reduced to tears, stumbling around the stage and, unforgivably, swearing at the audience."[88] Other concerts ended similarly, with, for example, fans at her Hammersmith Apollo performance saying that she "looked highly intoxicated throughout",[89] until she announced on 27 November 2007, that her performances and public appearances were cancelled for the remainder of 2007, citing doctor advice to take a complete rest. A statement issued by concert promoter Live Nation blamed "the rigours involved in touring and the intense emotional strain that Amy has been under in recent weeks" for the decision.[90]

On 20 February 2008, Winehouse performed at the 2008 BRIT Awards, performing "Valerie" with Mark Ronson, followed by "Love Is a Losing Game". She urged the crowd to "make some noise for my Blake."[91] In Paris, she performed what was described as a "well-executed 40 minute" set at the opening of a Fendi boutique.[92] Although her father, manager and various members of her touring team reportedly tried to dissuade her, Winehouse performed at the Rock in Rio Lisboa festival in Portugal in May 2008.[20] Although the set was plagued by a late arrival and problems with her voice, the crowd warmed to her. In addition to her own material she performed two Specials covers.[93] Winehouse performed at Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday Party concert at London's Hyde Park on the 27 June,[94] and the next day at the Glastonbury Festival.[95] On 12 July at the Oxegen Festival she performed a well-received 50 minute set[96] which was followed the next day by a 14 song set at T in the Park.[97] On 16 August she played at the Staffordshire leg of the V Festival, and the following day played the Chelmsford leg of the festival. Organizers said that Winehouse attracted the biggest crowds of the festival. Audience reaction was reported as mixed.[98] On 6 September she was the headliner at Bestival. She performed what was described as a polished set which ended with her storming off the stage. Her hour late arrival caused her set to be cut off at the halfway point due to a curfew.[99]

In May 2009, Winehouse returned to performing at a jazz festival in Saint Lucia amid torrential downpours and technical difficulties. During her hour long set it was reported she was unsteady on her feet and had trouble remembering lyrics. She apologised to the crowd for being "bored" and ended her set by walking off the stage in the middle of a song.[100][101] To a cheering crowd on 23 August at the V festival, Winehouse sang with The Specials on their songs "You're Wondering Now" and "Ghost Town".[102]

In July 2010, she performed "Valerie" with Mark Ronson at a movie premiere. She sang lead but forgot some of the song's lyrics.[78] In October Winehouse performed a four song set to promote her fashion line. In December 2010 Winehouse played a 40 minute concert at a Russian oligarch's party in Moscow. Guests included other Russian tycoons and Russian show business stars. The tycoon hand picked the songs she played.[103]

During January 2011, she played five dates in Brazil, with opening acts of Janelle Monáe and Mayer Hawthorne.[104][105] On 11 February 2011, Winehouse cut short a performance in Dubai following booing from the audience. Winehouse was reported to be tired, distracted and "tipsy" during the performance.[106]

On 18 June 2011, Winehouse started her 12-leg 2011 European tour in Belgrade. Local media described her performance as a scandal and disaster, and she was booed off the stage due to her apparently being too drunk to perform. It was reported that she was unable to remember the city she was in, the lyrics of her songs or – when trying to introduce them – the names of the members of her band.[107][108] The local press also claimed that Winehouse was forced to perform by her bodyguards, who didn't allow her to leave the stage when she tried to do so.[109] She then pulled out of performances in Istanbul and Athens which had been scheduled for the following week.[110] On 21 June it was announced that she had cancelled all shows of her European tour and would be given "as long as it takes" to sort herself out.[111]

Winehouse's last public appearance took place at Camden's Roundhouse, London on 20 July 2011, when she made a surprise guest appearance on stage to support her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, who was singing "Mama Said" with The Wanted.[112]

Club nightsOn 10 July 2008, Winehouse launched her own club night, Snakehips at the Monarch, in the Camden Monarch venue in London. Although billed as a DJ battle between her and another DJ, she stayed behind the decks swaying as another person actually played 1960s music.[113] She appeared at another Snakehips event at the Monarch on the night of 11 September. After reportedly arriving two hours late she spun music and played a short acoustic set.[114]

Other venturesWinehouse joined a campaign to stop a block of flats being built beside the George Tavern, a famous London East End music venue. Campaign supporters feared the residential development would end the spot's lucrative sideline as a film and photo location, on which it relies to survive.[115] As part of a breast cancer awareness campaign, Winehouse appeared in a revealing photograph for the April 2008 issue of Easy Living magazine.[116] Winehouse had an estimated £10m fortune, tying her for tenth place in the 2008 Sunday Times listing of the wealth of musicians under age 30.[117] The following year her fortune had dropped to an estimated £5m.[118] Her finances are run by Mitch and Janis Winehouse.[119] It was reported she earned about £1m singing at two private parties during Paris Fashion Week.[120] as well as another £1m to perform at a Moscow Art Gallery for Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.[121] Winehouse loaned a vintage dress used in her video for "Tears Dry on Their Own" as well as a DVD to the British Music Experience, a new museum dedicated to the history of British pop music.[122] The museum, located in The O2, opened on 9 March 2009.[123][124]

In January 2009 Winehouse announced that she was launching her own record label. The first act on her Lioness Records is Winehouse's 13-year-old goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield. Her first album, featuring covers of classic soul records, was released on 12 October 2009.[125] Winehouse is the backing singer on several tracks on the album and she performed backing vocals for Bromfield on the television programme Strictly Come Dancing on 10 October.[126]

Winehouse and her family are the subject of a 2009 documentary shot by Daphne Barak titled Saving Amy.[127]

Winehouse entered into a joint venture in 2009 with EMI to launch a range of wrapping paper and gift cards containing song lyrics from her album Back to Black.[128]

On 8 January 2010 a television documentary, My Daughter Amy, aired on Channel 4.[129]

Saving Amy was released as a paperback book in January 2010.[130]

Winehouse has collaborated on a 17 piece fashion collection with the Fred Perry label. It was released for sale in October 2010. According to Fred Perry's marketing director "We had three major design meetings where she was closely involved in product style selection and the application of fabric, colour and styling details,” and gave "crucial input on proportion, colour and fit”. The collection consists of "vintage-inspired looks including Capri pants, a bowling dress, a trench coat, pencil skirts, a longline argyle sweater and a pink-and-black checkerboard-printed collared shirt".[131][132]

Personal lifeWith the paparazzi taking photographs of her wherever they could, Winehouse obtained an injunction against a leading paparazzi agency under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, the resultant court order banning them from following her.[133] Photographers were also banned from following her within 100 metres of her home and photographing Winehouse in her home or the home of her friends and family. According to a newspaper report, sources close to the singer said legal action was taken out of concern for the safety of Winehouse and those close to her.[133]

RelationshipsShe married on-off boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil (born August 1978), a former video production assistant,[134][135] on 18 May 2007, in Miami, Florida. Fielder-Civil was a "dropout" of Bourne Grammar School, who moved to London at aged 16 from his native Lincolnshire.[20] In a June 2007 interview, Winehouse admitted she was sometimes violent towards him when she had been drinking, stating "if he says one thing I don't like then I'll chin him".[136] In August 2007, they were photographed, bloodied and bruised, in the streets of London after an alleged fight, although she contended her injuries were self-inflicted.[137] Equality campaigner Glenn Sacks criticised Winehouse for "bragging" about abusing her husband, noting how a male abuser would have been "locked up, stigmatised, and vilified".[138]

Winehouse's parents and in-laws publicly reported their numerous concerns, citing fears that the two might commit suicide, with Fielder-Civil's father encouraging fans to boycott her music.[139] Fielder-Civil was quoted in a British tabloid as saying he introduced her to crack cocaine and heroin.[140] During a visit with Mitch Winehouse at the prison in July 2008, Fielder-Civil reportedly said that they would cut themselves to ease the pain of withdrawal.[20]

From 21 July 2008 to 25 February 2009, Fielder-Civil was imprisoned following his guilty plea on charges of trying to pervert the course of justice as well as a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent.[141][142][143] The incident, in July 2007, involved an assault on a pub landlord that resulted in a broken cheek.[144] According to the prosecution the landlord accepted £200,000 as part of a deal to "effectively throw the [court] case and not turn up". The prosecution testified that the money used to pay off the landlord belonged to Winehouse,[145] but that Winehouse pulled out of a meeting with the men involved in the plot, because she had to attend an awards ceremony.[146]

Winehouse was spotted with aspiring actor Josh Bowman on holiday in Saint Lucia in early January 2009, saying she was "in love again, and I don't need drugs."[147] She commented that the "whole marriage was based on doing drugs" and that "for the time being I've just forgotten I'm even married."[147] On 12 January, Winehouse's spokesman confirmed that "papers have been received" for what Fielder-Civil's solicitor has said are divorce proceedings based on a claim of adultery.[148][149] On 25 February, Blake Fielder-Civil was quoted as saying that he planned to continue divorce proceedings to give himself a drug-free fresh start.[143] In March, Winehouse was quoted in a magazine as saying, "I still love Blake and I want him to move into my new house with me – that was my plan all along ... I won't let him divorce me. He's the male version of me and we're perfect for each other."[150] Uncontested,[151] the divorce was granted on 16 July 2009 and became final on 28 August 2009.[151] Upon his request Fielder-Civil received no money in the settlement.[152] She is believed to have been dating director Reg Traviss shortly before her death.[153]

Substance abuse and mental health issuesWinehouse's battles with substance abuse were the subject of much media attention. In various interviews, she admitted to having problems with self-harm, depression and eating disorders.[17][154] In 2005, she went through a period of drinking, heavy drug use, violent mood swings and weight loss.[20] People who saw her during the end of that year and early 2006 reported a rebound that coincided with the writing of Back to Black.[20] Her family believes that the mid-2006 death of her grandmother, who was a stabilising influence, set her off into addiction.[20] In August 2007, Winehouse cancelled a number of shows in the UK and Europe, citing exhaustion and ill health. She was hospitalised during this period for what was reported as an overdose of heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and alcohol.[155]

Winehouse told a magazine that the drugs were to blame for her hospitalisation and that "I really thought that it was over for me then."[156] Soon after, Winehouse's father commented that when he had made public statements regarding her problems, he was using the media because it seemed the only way to get through to her.[157] In an interview with The Album Chart Show on British television, Winehouse said she was manic depressive and not alcoholic, adding that that sounded like "an alcoholic in denial".[158]

On 2 December 2007, images of the singer outside her home in the early morning hours, barefoot and wearing only a bra and jeans, appeared on the internet and in tabloid newspapers. In a statement, her spokesman blamed paparazzi harassment for the incident.[159] The spokesman reported that the singer was in a physician-supervised programme and was channelling her difficulties by writing a lot of music.[160] The British tabloid The Sun posted a video of a woman, alleged to be Winehouse, apparently smoking crack cocaine and speaking of having taken ecstasy and valium. Winehouse's father moved in with her,[161] and Island Records, her record label, announced the abandonment of plans for an American promotion campaign on her behalf.[162] In late January 2008, Winehouse reportedly entered a rehabilitation facility for a two-week treatment program.[163]

On 23 January 2008, the video was passed on to the Metropolitan Police,[162] who questioned her on 5 February.[164] No charges were brought. On 26 March 2008, Winehouse's spokesman said she was "doing well" and denied a published report in a British tabloid that consideration was being given to having her return to rehab.[165] Her record company reportedly believed that her recovery remained fragile.[166] By late April 2008, her erratic behaviour, including an allegation of assault, caused fear that her drug rehabilitation efforts have been unsuccessful,[167] leading to efforts by Winehouse's father and manager to seek assistance in having her sectioned.[168] Her dishevelled appearance during and after a scheduled club night in September sparked new rumours of a relapse. Photographers were quoted as saying she appeared to have cuts on her legs and arms.[114]

In an interview released in June 2009 Winehouse's father said the singer was in a drug replacement programme. He said she was gradually recovering but that heavy drinking was causing "slight backward steps". A documentary shot early in 2009 shows Winehouse apparently intoxicated according to a newspaper report.[169] Pictures published by a magazine in July 2009 upon her return to the United Kingdom from her extended stay in Saint Lucia appeared to show that Winehouse had gained weight and that her complexion was improved.[170] In an October 2010 interview Winehouse said she had been drug-free for three years, saying "I literally woke up one day and was like, 'I don’t want to do this anymore.'”[171]

Winehouse entered the Priory Clinic on 25 May 2011, where she stayed for one week.[172]

Violence and legal difficultiesIn 2006, Winehouse admitted punching a fan in the face for criticising taking Blake Fielder-Civil as a husband. She then attacked her spouse as he attempted to calm her down, kneeing him in the crotch.[173]

In October 2007, Winehouse and her then-husband were arrested in Bergen, Norway for possession of seven grams of marijuana. The couple were later released and fined 3850 kroner (around £350).[174] Winehouse first appealed the fines, claiming she was "duped" into confessing,[174][175] but later dropped the appeal.[176]

On 26 April 2008, Winehouse was cautioned after she admitted to police she slapped a 38 year-old man in the face, a "common assault" offence. She voluntarily turned herself in and was held overnight. Police said, at her arrival she was "in no fit state" to be interviewed.[177] Winehouse was arrested on 7 May 2008 on suspicion of possessing drugs after a video of her apparently smoking crack cocaine was passed to the police in January,[178] but was released on bail a few hours later because they could not confirm, from the video, what she was smoking.[155][179] The Crown Prosecution Service considered charging her with possessing a controlled drug and allowing her premises to be used for the supply by others of a controlled drug, but she was cleared when the service could not establish that the substance in the video was a controlled drug.[180] In reaction to the decision, former police commander John O’Connor said it is an "absolute scandal that nothing could be done" about Winehouse "cocking a snook at the law".[181] Some members of Parliament also reacted negatively.[181][182] Two London residents were subsequently charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine and ecstasy to Winehouse.[183] One of the pair was sentenced to two years in prison on 13 December 2008, while the other received a two-year community order.[184]

On 5 March 2009, Winehouse was arrested and charged with common assault following a claim by a woman that Winehouse hit her in the eye at a September 2008 Prince's Trust charity ball.[185] At the same time, she was reported to have spat at the English socialite Pippa Middleton and to have headbutted a photographer.[186] Winehouse's spokesperson announced the singer cancelled a scheduled United States Coachella Festival appearance in "light of current legal issues".[187] Swearing in under her legal name of Amy Jade Civil, Winehouse appeared in court on 17 March to enter her plea of not guilty.[188] On 23 July her assault trial began with prosecutor Lyall Thompson charging that Winehouse acted with "deliberate and unjustifiable violence" while appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or another substance. The woman, Sharene Flash, testified that Winehouse "punched me forcefully in my right eye. She used a fist, her right one.” Winehouse testified that she did not punch Flash, but tried to push Flash away from her because she was scared of Flash. Winehouse cited her worry that Flash would sell her story to a tabloid, Flash's height advantage, and Flash's "rude" behaviour as reasons for her fear of Flash.[189][190] On the 24 July, District Judge Timothy Workman ruled that Winehouse was not guilty of the charge. Workman cited the facts that all but two of the witnesses were intoxicated at the time of the incident and that medical evidence did not show "the sort of injury that often occurs when there is a forceful punch to the eye".[191]

On 19 December 2009, Winehouse was arrested again on charges of common assault, plus another charge of public order offence. Winehouse assaulted the front-of-house manager of the Milton Keynes Theatre after he asked her to move from her seat.[192] On 20 January 2010, she admitted common assault and disorderly behaviour. She was given a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 court costs and £100 compensation to the man she attacked.[193]

Respiratory problemsOn 23 June 2008, Winehouse's publicist corrected earlier misstatements by Mitch Winehouse that his daughter had early stage emphysema, instead claiming she had signs of what could lead to early-stage emphysema.[7] Mitch Winehouse had also stated that his daughter's lungs were operating at 70 percent capacity and that she had an irregular heartbeat. Mitch Winehouse said that these problems had been caused by her chain smoking and crack cocaine use. The singer’s father also reported that doctors had warned Winehouse that, if she continued smoking crack cocaine, she would have to wear an oxygen mask and would eventually die.[194] In a radio interview, Mitch Winehouse said the singer was responding "fabulously" to treatment, which included being covered with nicotine patches.[195] British Lung Foundation spokesman Keith Prowse noted this type of condition could be managed with treatment. Prowse also said the condition was not normal for a person her age but "heavy smoking and inhaling other substances like drugs can age the lungs prematurely".[196] Norman H. Edelman of the American Lung Association explained that if she stopped smoking, her lung functions would decline at the rate of a normal person, but continued smoking would lead to a more rapid decline in lung function.[197] Photographs of the singer with a cigarette in her mouth, taken 23 June 2008, were widely published.[198]

Winehouse was released from The London Clinic 24 hours after returning from a temporary leave to perform at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday and at a concert in Glastonbury, and continued receiving treatment as an outpatient.[199] In July, 2008 Winehouse stated that she had been diagnosed with "some areas of emphysema" and said she is getting herself together by "eating loads of healthy food, sleeping loads, playing my guitar, making music and writing letters to my husband every day".[200] She also kept a vertical tanning bed in her apartment.[30] Winehouse began precautionary testing on her lungs and chest on 25 October 2008[201] at the London Clinic for what was reported as a chest infection. Winehouse was in and out of the facility and was granted permission to set her own schedule regarding home leave.[76] She returned to the hospital on 23 November 2008 for a reported reaction to her medication.[202]

Death

Tributes outside Amy Winehouse's home at Camden Square on the evening of her death on 23 July 2011At 3:54 pm BST (15:54 UTC+1) on 23 July 2011, two ambulances were called to Winehouse's home in Camden, London.[203] Winehouse had been found by a member of her security team[204] and was pronounced dead at the scene. Shortly afterwards, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that she had died.[205][206] A post mortem was carried out on 25 July. The results were inconclusive and no cause of death could be established.[207] An inquest was adjourned until 26 October, and results of further toxicology tests will take two to four weeks.[204][207] A private funeral was planned for 26 July 2011 for friends and family.[208] After her death was announced, media and camera crews appeared as crowds gathered near Winehouse’s residence to pay their respects. Forensic investigators entered the flat as police cordoned off the street outside.

Winehouse's record label, Universal Republic, released a statement that read in part: "We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer."[209][210] Among the number of music artists who paid tribute to Winehouse include U2, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, George Michael, Adele and Kelly Clarkson.[211]

Family and friends attended Winehouse's funeral on 26 July 2011 at Edgwarebury Lane cemetery in north London.[13][212] Her mother and father, Janis and Mitch Winehouse, close friend Kelly Osbourne, producer Mark Ronson, and her boyfriend were among those in attendance at the private service led by Rabbi Frank Hellner.[13][212] Her father delivered the eulogy, saying "Goodnight, my angel, sleep tight. Mummy and Daddy love you ever so much."[13] Carole King's "So Far Away" closed the service with mourners singing along.[213] She was later cremated at Golders Green Crematorium. The family planned to sit a two-day Shiva.

ControversyWinehouse's dichotomous public image of critical and commercial success versus personal turmoil proved to be controversial. The New Statesman magazine called Winehouse "a filthy-mouthed, down-to-earth diva,"[214] while Newsweek magazine called her "a perfect storm of sex kitten, raw talent and poor impulse control."[215] Karen Heller with The Philadelphia Inquirer summarised the maelstrom this way:

She's only 24 with six Grammy nods, crashing headfirst into success and despair, with a codependent husband in jail, exhibitionist parents with questionable judgement, and the paparazzi documenting her emotional and physical distress. Meanwhile, a haute designer Karl Lagerfeld appropriates her dishevelled style and eating issues to market to the elite while proclaiming her the new Bardot.[216]

By 2008, her continued drug problems threatened her career. Even as Nick Gatfield, the president of Island Records, toyed with the idea of releasing Winehouse "to deal with her problems", he remarked on her talent, saying, "It’s a reflection of her status [in the U.S.] that when you flick through the TV coverage [of the Grammys] it’s her image they use."[162] Post-Grammys, some questioned whether Winehouse should have been honoured with the awards given her recent personal and drug problems,[217][218][219] including Natalie Cole, who introduced Winehouse at the ceremony. Cole (who battled her own substance-abuse problems while winning a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1975[220]) remarked, "I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it's not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too. She needs to get herself together."[220] In an opinion newspaper commentary, Antonio Maria Costa, executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, said that the alleged drug habits of Winehouse and other celebrities send a bad message "to others who are vulnerable to addiction" and undermine the efforts of other celebrities trying to raise awareness of problems in Africa, now that more cocaine used in Europe passes through Africa.[221] Winehouse's spokesperson called Costa a "ludicrous man" and noted that "Amy has never given a quote about drugs or flaunted it in any way. She's had some problems and is trying to get better. The U.N. should get its own house in order."[222] Graeme Pearson, the former head of Scotland's drug enforcement agency, criticised Winehouse and Kate Moss for making going to rehab a badge of honour, thus giving the false impression that quitting drugs is easy, because many cannot afford to go to clinics.[223]

Winehouse became a staple in popularity polls. The 2008 NME Awards nominated Winehouse in the categories of "Villain of the Year", "Best Solo Artist", and "Best Music DVD"; Winehouse won for "Worst Dressed Performer".[224][225] In its third annual list, Glamour magazine named Winehouse the third worst dressed British Woman.[226] Winehouse was ranked number two on Richard Blackwell's 48th annual "Ten Worst Dressed Women" list, behind Victoria Beckham.[227] In an April 2008 poll conducted by Sky News, Winehouse was named the second greatest "ultimate heroine" by the UK population at large, topping the voting for that category of those polled under 25 years old.[228] Psychologist Donna Dawson commented that the results demonstrate women like Winehouse who have "a certain sense of vulnerability or have had to fight against some adversity in their lives” receive recognition.[228] Winehouse was voted the second most hated personality in the United Kingdom in a poll conducted one month later by Marketing magazine.[229]

The sale price for the sculpture is listed at US $100,000. Perego said of the sculpture "Rock stars are the sacrificial animals of society." Winehouse’s spokesperson said "It’s a funny kind of tribute. The artist seems in thrall to a tabloid persona that is not the real Amy. People often use her image to sell their work."[235]

Winehouse attracted a number of musical tribute acts including Paula Delany, based in Southport, Merseyside, who styled herself "Amy Housewine".[236]

O corpo da cantora Amy Winehouse foi cremado nesta terça-feira, após uma cerimônia fechada ao público, no norte de Londres.

Familiares e amigos foram até o cemitério de Edgwarebury em um comboio de veículos. Apesar das tentativas de manter o público longe da cerimônia, o caminho até a entrada do cemitério ficou tomado por fotógrafos e alguns fãs.

Nessa segunda-feira, a Polícia Metropolitana de Londres (Scotland Yard) disse que a autópsia realizada no corpo da cantora não determinou imediatamente a causa da morte, sendo necessário aguardar os resultados dos exames toxicológicos, que devem sair no prazo entre duas a quatro semanas.

A polícia informou que um inquérito judicial sobre o caso, aberto pelo tribunal encarregado de investigar mortes não-esclarecidas, foi adiado até 26 de outubro.

De acordo com a funcionária do tribunal Sharon Duff, a polícia investigou o local onde o corpo de Amy foi encontrado, considerando a cena da morte "não suspeita".

Na segunda-feira, a mãe, o pai e o irmão de Amy Winehouse estiveram em frente à casa da cantora no bairro de Camden Town, no norte de Londres, onde ela foi encontrada morta.

Na noite de sábado, o guitarrista dos Rolling Stones, Ron Wood, dedicou seu programa de rádio na Grã-Bretanha à cantora. Wood disse que a morte "é uma perda muito triste de uma grande amiga com quem passei muito tempo junto".

Dilma confirma presença na Flip

De acordo com o registro em diversas mídias, a assessoria da presidência da República confirmou ao presidente da Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, Galeno Amorim, que Dilma irá à abertura da Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty, no dia 6 de julho. Com isso, ela pode se tornar a primeira presidente do Brasil a participar da Festa Internacional de Literatura durante o mandato. O ex-presidente Fernando Henrique Cardoso participou da conferência de abertura na Flip 2010.
