The gray wolf or grey wolf (Canis lupus) is a species of canid native to the wilderness and remote areas of North America, Eurasia, and North Africa. It is the largest member of its family, with males averaging 43--45 kg (95--99 lb), and females 36--38.5 kg (79--85 lb). It is similar in general appearance and proportions to a German shepherd, or sled dog, but has a larger head, narrower chest, longer legs, straighter tail and bigger paws. Its winter fur is long and bushy, and predominantly a mottled gray in colour, although nearly pure white, red, or brown to black also occur.

Within the genus Canis, the gray wolf represents a more specialised and progressive form than its smaller cousins (the coyote and golden jackal), as demonstrated by its morphological adaptations to hunting large prey, its more gregarious nature and its highly advanced expressive behavior. It is a social animal, travelling in nuclear families consisting of a mated pair, accompanied by the pair's adult offspring. The gray wolf is typically an apex predator throughout its range, with only humans and tigers posing a serious threat to it. It feeds primarily on large ungulates, though it also eats smaller animals, livestock, carrion, and garbage.

The gray wolf is one of the world's most well researched animals, with probably more books written about it than any other wildlife species. It has a long history of association with humans, having been despised and hunted in most agricultural communities due to its attacks on livestock, while conversely being respected by some Native American tribes. It is the sole ancestor of the dog, which was first domesticated in the Middle East. Although the fear of wolves is prevalent in many human societies, the majority of recorded attacks on people have been attributed to animals suffering from rabies. Non-rabid wolves have attacked and killed people, mainly children, but this is unusual, as wolves are relatively few, live away from people, and have been taught to fear humans by hunters and shepherds. Hunting and trapping has reduced the species' range to about one third of its original range, though its still relatively widespread range and stable population means that the species is not threatened at a global level, and is therefore classified by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Πρέπει να καταχωνιάσεις τα όνειρά σου μέσα σε απαγορευμένες σκέψεις και απωθημένα, πρέπει να τα κρύψεις καλά στον πάτο ενός μπουκαλιού και να τα αφήσεις να χαθούν για πάντα στην θάλασσα, με αντάλλαγμα μια “καθώς πρέπει” ζωή.

Ο Πορτογάλος Mr.Dheo παλεύοντας ακόμα ένα βράδυ με τα όνειρά του ξυπνάει στο μαγευτικό βοτσαλάκι της Μυκόνου, στο μέρος όπου ο θρυλικός Ηρακλής μόνος του τερμάτισε τη δυναστευτική κυριαρχία των γιγάντων κατατροπώνοντας τους σε μια μάχη δίχως αύριο. Δίπλα του βρίσκεται ένα από τα εκατομμύρια μπουκάλια που ταξιδεύουν ανά τους ωκεανούς χωρίς τελικό προορισμό ή παραλήπτη και μέσα τους φυλάνε τα όνειρα και τις ελπίδες μας.

Στο όμορφο πρόσωπο της μυστηριώδους κοπέλας που απεικονίζεται στο χαρτί που βρίσκει στο μπουκάλι ο Mr.Dheo βλέπει την απόλυτη ελευθερία και ξεγνοιασιά που κρύβει ο ωκεανός και λείπει από τη ζωή μας. Χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη βουτάει στο νερό προς αναζήτησή της κι εκείνη του χαρίζει μια στιγμή μόνο πραγματικής ελευθερίας -μια στιγμή που δεν ανταλλασσέται με όλο το χρυσάφι του κόσμου- και χάνεται ξανά στο απόλυτο γαλάζιο.

Αναδυόμενος στην επιφάνεια βρίσκεται στην όαση του Βοτσαλάκι resort, ενώ πλεόν στο νερό επιπλέουν Spray cans. Inside the bottle he finds the sketch of a mysterious beautiful girl and MrDheo sees in her eyes the perfect freedom form that is hidden deep in the ocean and is missing from our lives.

Without thinking twice he jumps into the ocean to find her and she gives him a single moment of true freedom, a moment that all the money in the world cannot buy and...she vanishes again in the deep blue. Emerging on the surface MrDheo finds himself alone in the magic oasis of Votsalaki resort and his spray cans floating on the water. He instantly depicts the look of perfect freedom on the wall and then he throws the bottle entrapping her back in the water. Maybe the next recipient manages to keep her forever with us...

The Gray Wolf (Canis lupus; also spelled Grey Wolf, see spelling differences; also known as Timber Wolf or Wolf) is a mammal in the order Carnivora. The Gray Wolf shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), as evidenced by DNA sequencing and genetic drift studies.

Gray wolves were once abundant and distributed over much of North America, Eurasia, and the Middle East. Today, for a variety of human-related reasons, including widespread habitat destruction and excessive hunting, wolves inhabit only a very limited portion of their former range. Though listed as a species of least concern for extinction worldwide, for some regions including the Continental United States, the species is listed as endangered or threatened.

Wildlife: Japan Calls Off Whaling Ships

Are you against whaling? If so, then you will be happy to hear that anti-whaling activists are putting up a real fight over in Japan. Recently, the Japanese ended its whaling season early, bringing all of the ships back to port due to “harassment” from environmental activists, such as Sea Shepherd. Since Japan fisheries could no longer ensure the safety of the whalers, they were forced to end the season early. Although the whaling has only ended for the season, this is a huge step in whale protection because it shows that activists are making whaling very difficult for places like Japan.

The Japanese whaling fleet consists of 180 people spread out among four ships. If allowed to continue whaling during the southern winter season, the fleet was expected to kill around 945 whales. Commercial whaling was banned in 1986, but Japan is allowed to continue whaling because it receives permits to hunt whales for scientific research. Although most people in Japan have tried whale meat at one point, most do not eat whale meat on a regular basis. The Japanese who do eat whale meet regularly argue that international powers have no right interfering with their cultural traditions. Australia and New Zealand are very strong opponents to whaling and Australia is even in the process of going through the International Court of Justice to fight Tokyo over whaling.

Upon doing research on this topic, I discovered an interesting article from 2007 highlighting a bowhead whale thought to have lived to about 130 years old! The whale had been hunted off the coast of Alaska and a 130-year-old spearhead had been found stuck in its side. This implies that the whale was hunted once before as a calf, but since traditional whale hunters did not capture calves, the whale escaped. Biologists claim that this evidence helps support the idea that the bowhead whale is the oldest living mammal on earth. Keep an eye out for more anti-whaling news to help preserve this awesome mammal!

World's Most Intelligent Animals

1. Chimpanzee

This animal can be found in wet tropical forests and savannas of West and Central Africa. Chimpanzee are able to learn, perform the tasks of thinking organization, and has a better memory then any other animal. They have been known to beat the college educated in the memory test. They can be taught to use computers to solve numerical problems. These animals can quickly adapt and perform sign language to communicate with humans. Chimpanzees have been observed using advanced knowledge tools.
This includes a spear to take animals out of small holes in trees, using branches to lure and catch prey, using stones to break nuts, and leaves a sponge to absorb water. They have seen an attack using tactical maneuvers, such as flanking prey. They often use mental manipulation within their families. Chimpanzee Genome Project is completed in 2005. This shows that chimpanzees share 98% genetically the same DNA as humans. It was approximately four to six million years since humans and chimpanzees that deviate from the evolution of their common ancestor. More recently, chimpanzees have been seen teaching sign language to their babies without human intervention. We were just beginning to understand the mental abilities of chimpanzees.

2. Bottlenose Dolphin

Bottlenose Dolphin lives in the warm waters worldwide and is the most intelligent species of dolphins. It has a very large brain and the cerebral cortex and the frontal lobe is 40% larger than humans. Cerebral cortex is a part of the brain responsible for social communications, abstract information processing, problem solving, and intelligence of a higher level. Dolphin bottle very easily trained. They have been found to have the ability to think, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas, and learn from previous experiences.

They use echolocation to hunt prey, and certain forms of squeaks and whistles to communicate with one another. It is also interesting to see that in many occasions this dolphin show remorse for the other species and the signs of consciousness. In a story recently, the local dolphin named Moko saved two Pygmy sperm whales stranded on New Zealand. Whales had been stranded for hours when Moko appeared and led the pair through the bars of sand for safety. It is a beautiful sight for locals and become national news

3. Rhesus Monkey

Rhesus monkeys are known for intelligence and it has been widely used in biological and medical research. It has great memory, the ability to learn, and make decisions for themselves. They use facial expressions very similar to human and understood by humans. Rhesus Monkey's have demonstrated suicidal tendencies, planning attacks, and highly complex social animals. They have a detailed system of shared vocal similarities to human communication. Research on the genome sequencing of the Rhesus Monkey in 2007, conclude that humans and apes share 93% of their genetic DNA. Humans and apes chromosome mosaic each other.

4. Elephant

There are three living species of elephants, African Bush Elephant, African forest elephant and Asian elephant. All the offspring is expected to inherit the same genetic genius. In many cultures the elephant is seen as a symbol of wisdom and known for their extraordinary memories. They create a mental map and is said to remember the exact location of water holes that feeding them after not visited for years. Elephant brain is the largest of all land animals. Elephants have exceptional hearing and they use their ears and trunk to listen. They communicate with the bellows, roars, like a trumpet call, and can even send voice remotely using the land.

This animal is one of the few species that has shown mirror self-recognition and identify themselves as independent. This test is considered as the higher basis for empathy, altruism, and social interaction in some other species. Elephants have noted a variety of behaviors. Including actions associated with grief, making music, love, play, and the use of sophisticated equipment. Elephants have extraordinary taste for artistic achievement. They can paint a portrait that expresses itself.

5. African Grey Parrot

African gray parrot is a species found in West and Central African rain forest. Parrots is famous to show that they can imitate human speech, but the African Gray can associate words with meaning and form small sentences. This bird communicate with each other through songs, calls, and body language. African Gray's can easily be trained to have conversations and activities. They can be managed to imitate, create voices and imitate sound of household perfectly.

One specific example is Alex birds. Alex can identify more than fifty objects, seven colors, five shapes, and a numeric value to six. Alex understands the difference between large and small, above and below, and even show emotion understanding by telling handlers "to go away" when he became bored with the test. Then there is the story of the African Gray Parrot in Nagarey, Japan lost from the owner, wounded, and sent to the animal hospital. While in hospital the bird began to speak with the vet says "I'm Mr. Yosuke Nakamura." He also provides a complete home address to the last number. Pretty sure he was right and returned to the house, but not before entertaining the hospital with a song and dance.

6.. North Pacific Giant Octopus

This animal live in the depth of the sea. They belong to cephalopods molluscs class. All types of cephalopods are known to have exceptional intellectual ability. Octopus is considered the most intelligent invertebrate life. In the experimental conditions, these animals have shown short and long term memory. They have an extraordinary observation learning and problem solving skills. Octopus nervous system has a very large, but only partially found in their brains. In about two-thirds of octopus, neurons can be found on the rope around and the arm.

There are arm that has a very large autonomy. They are masters of mimicry and camouflage. They are professional escape artist and can often be found in the hull crabs, eat the catch. This animal is very keen eyesight, sense of touch, and very fast. There was a report from the North Pacific Giant Octopus that reach 600 pounds, with a range of hands 30 feet.

7. Border Collie

Border Collie is widely regarded as the most intelligent dog breed in the world. They usually spend their time tending sheep and cattle handling various forms, but It's also a great pet. With physical exercise and various forms of mental stimulation this dog is the fastest to learn. The dog is originated in Scotland, Welsh, and English border and the dogs make a direct impact on the agricultural industry. It has been reported that in certain areas Australian Outback, a trained collie can do five times the amount of work that usually done by human. Border Collie dominate over all breeds in dog sports.

They excel in the high jump, utility classes, flying-ball, and even can take first place in dog dancing competitions. They have an extraordinary sense of smell and is widely regarded as the great dog. They can be trained as helper dogs, or in search and rescue as well. This dog obviously will recognize you as an individual personality, they will learn your routine, anticipate what will happen next, and find a way to get what they want.

8. Ravens & Crows

These two animals is mentioned together because both are members of the family Corvidae birds. This family is widely regarded as the most intelligent of all birds. Peak crow IQ scale, which is a scientific test to determine the intelligence of birds. They can count, distinguish complex shapes, and perform observational study tasks. Crows are social creatures and will be involved in the air to form a jousting sequence power. Wild hooded crows in Israel have learned to use bread crumbs as bait fish, think in advance and anticipate the catch.

The New Caledonian Crow have been studied for its ability to use tools in looking for food everyday . This includes creating a knife that cut the leaves and stems of grass. They are also using advanced picking, smoothing, and bending of twigs and grass stems to produce a variety of food substances. Raven is similar to the crow, but larger size. Both species are black and the main difference is in their vocalizations. Ravens do a lot of the same behavior as crows, but they have been recognized for their ability to drop the beans, clams, muscles, and oysters on the highway, waiting for cars to run them over.

9. Rats

There are hundreds of species of rats in the whole world. Rat is one of the most studied and tested the animals on this planet. They have been the subject of research and experiments for various well-known and influential physiological studies. The reason for this is that mice is similar to the psychology of human. All rats learned new behaviors and tricks easily. A 2007 study found that mice have metacognition, which is a mental ability previously only been documented in humans and some primates.

Mice have a remarkable sense of smell and hearing. They have been trained to detect landmines and bombs. Research and latest technology has been suggested that mice could even smell and identify human sputum samples infected with TB. This is a wonderful animal to solve the maze. Rats are social animals and show signs of remorse, joy, loss, and stress. They dream in a very similar way as humans. They also demonstrate exceptional organizational and technical maintenance. Just remember, mice are intelligent and friendly creatures so don't afraid of them.

10. Portia Labiata Jumping Spider

This species is a member of the genus Portia, kind of spiders and smallest creatures in the list. Also known as the White-whiskered Portia, they inhabit the critical areas and secondary forests in Africa, Asia, and Australia. This spider has shown the ability to learn in laboratory tests and the bug has been labeled the smartest in the world. They perform surprisingly well in various tasks of solving problems. One of the principles of their other charming skills of spider webs to their food.

To do this they will pull the rhythm in the corner of the web to mimic the trapped bug or insect intruders. Πληθαίνουν οι επιθέσεις άγριων ζώων σε χωριά κυρίως απομακρυσμένων περιοχών της Ρωσίας, εξαιτίας της έλλειψης τροφής. Μπροστά σε αυτή την κατάσταση, οι τοπικές Αρχές συνιστούν στους πολίτες να μην κυκλοφορούν τις νύχτες, ενώ τα επιθετικά ζώα πυροβολούνται, ακόμη και από ελικόπτερα.

Η κατάσταση επιδεινώνεται όταν πιάνουν τα κρύα. Υπάρχουν περισσότερα πεινασμένα ζώα, που τους είναι όλο και πιο δύσκολο να βρούν τροφή στο δάσος. Γι’ αυτό μπαίνουν στα χωριά. Στην Καμτσάτκα (ρωσική Απω Ανατολή), για παράδειγμα, καταγράφηκε φέτος ένας ασυνήθιστα μεγάλος αριθμός από αρκούδες που δεν είχαν πέσει σε χειμερία νάρκη. Θύματα των αφυπνισμένων σαρκοβόρων έχουν ήδη πέσει τρία άτομα, και υπάρχουν και δύο σοβαρά τραυματισμένοι.

Αλλά πιο συχνά οι αρκούδες επιτίθενται σε οικόσιτα ζώα και πουλερικά. Οι ειδικοί και οι κυνηγοί στην περιοχή, πιστεύουν ότι οι αρκούδες δεν μπορούν να κοιμηθούν από την πείνα. Τα ποτάμια της Καμτσάτκα είχαν φέτος λίγα ψάρια, και τα δάση είχαν λίγα μούρα. Πολλά ζώα δεν πρόλαβαν να συσσωρεύσουν λίπος και τώρα γυρεύουν τροφή, ακόμη και κοντά σε οικισμούς. Ωστόσο πιο συχνά το φόβο σπέρνουν οι λύκοι, που περιφέρονται στους δρόμους των οικισμών τη νύχτα. Τα πρώτα τους θύματα είναι τα μαντρόσκυλα που είναι δεμένα στις αυλές με σιδερένιες αλυσίδες και δεν μπορούν να αντισταθούν. Έτσι στη Δημοκρατία των Κόμι, τα άγρια ζώα έχουν σκοτώσει ήδη τρία σκυλιά. Στην περιοχή του Καλινινγκράντ οι λύκοι έφαγαν 35 πρόβατα και άλλα 20 οικόσιτα ζώα. Στην Τουβά καταγράφηκαν 15 περιπτώσεις επιθέσεων λύκων σε οικόσιτα ζώα. Στην περιοχή του Λουγκάνσκ, οι λύκοι σκότωσαν 9 πρόβατα. Σύμφωνα με τους ντόπιους, πρόκειται για την πρώτη φορά που οι λύκοι επιτίθενται σε οικόσιτα ζώα στα όρια ενός οικισμού.

Οι τοπικές αρχές κάθε περιοχής αποφασίζουν για τα μέτρα που πρέπει να ληφθούν, προκειμένου να αντιμετωπίσουν τα άγρια ζώα που αποτελούν κίνδυνο για ανθρώπους και τα οικόσιτά τους ζώα. Εξάλλου, κάποιο πρόγραμμα για ολόκληρη τη χώρα δεν υπάρχει. Βέβαια, στις περιοχές όπου οι επιθέσεις των λύκων είναι μεμονωμένες, οι αρχές δεν εκδίδουν επίσημες άδειες για χρήση όπλων. Στους φοβισμένους κάτοικους συνιστάται να τηρούν απλούς κανόνες ασφάλειας. Να μην βγαίνουν το βράδυ από το σπίτι, να μην αφήνουν παιδιά στον δρόμο χωρίς επιτήρηση, να κλείνουν τα σκυλιά στο σπίτι, και όταν συναντήσουν ένα άγριο ζώο να τηλεφωνούν σε κυνηγούς. Οι αξιωματικοί δεν διευκρινίζουν συνήθως τι πρέπει να κάνει κανείς όταν βλέπει απέναντί του ένα λύκο, και ο κυνηγός δεν απαντά στο τηλέφωνο.

Πώς αντιμετωπίζεις την αρκούδα;

Οι αρκούδες, σε αντίθεση με τους λύκους, επισκέπτονται σπανίως τους οικισμούς. Γι’ αυτό οι προφυλάξεις είναι διαφορετικές. Να μην πηγαίνει κανείς μόνος του στο δάσος, την ώρα που βρίσκεται στο δάσος να μιλάει δυνατά ή να τραγουδάει, ώστε τα ζώα να τον ακούσουν και να μην πλησιάζουν τους ανθρώπους, και μόλις διακρίνει κανείς μια αρκούδα, να μην κάνει απότομες κινήσεις, αλλά να αρχίσει να υποχωρεί αργά-αργά. Σε περίπτωση επίθεσης από αρκούδα, καλύτερα να πέσει κανείς στο έδαφος και να προσποιηθεί τον νεκρό. Οι δυνατότητες να σωθείς από μια αρκούδα τρέχοντας, ή ανεβαίνοντας σ’ ένα δέντρο, είναι ελάχιστες. Όμως υπάρχουν και περιοχές όπου οι οδηγίες από μόνες τους δεν είναι αρκετές. Ο αριθμός των ζώων υπερβαίνει όλα τα αποδεκτά όρια, και επιβάλλεται να μειωθεί δραστικά.

Σύμφωνα με τη νομοθεσία, απαγορεύεται η αδικαιολόγητη εξόντωση των ζώων, για την οποία προβλέπεται πρόστιμο ύψους από 2 έως 5 χιλιάδες ρούβλια (45-115 ευρώ). Το ρωσικό υπουργείο Φυσικών Πόρων και Οικολογίας, παρέχει άδεια για κυνήγι με σκοπό την «ισορροπία» του πληθυσμού των ζώων. Η χρήση όπλου επιτρέπεται σε αστυνομικούς και κυνηγούς.

«Κυνήγι» από ελικόπτερα!

Η ομοσπονδιακή νομοθεσία προβλέπει μόνο τον τουφεκισμό των λύκων. Η χρήση παγίδων και δηλητηρίων είναι απαγορευμένη. Οι τοπικές αρχές έχουν ειδικό προϋπολογισμό γι’ αυτούς τους σκοπούς. Έτσι, στη Γιακουτία θα διατεθούν τα 32 εκατομμύρια ρούβλια (περίπου 744 χιλιάδες ευρώ) για την αντιμετώπιση των λύκων. Εκτός από τα τουφέκια, οι τοπικές αρχές επιθυμούν να χρησιμοποιήσουν ελαφρά αεροσκάφη και ελικόπτερα για βολές στους λύκους από αέρος.

Στην περιοχή του Ιρκούτσκ, η απόσταση μεταξύ των οικισμών είναι μεγάλη, και υπάρχει έλλειψη αστυνομικών που θα έσωζαν τους κατοίκους από τους λύκους. Στο μεταξύ, τα ζώα που εντοπίζονται στην περιοχή πλεονάζουν κατά τρεις φορές. Φτάνουν τις τέσσερις χιλιάδες, ενώ το αποδεκτό όριο αντιστοιχεί σε 800. Γι’ αυτό τον λόγο οι ντόπιοι κάτοικοι φροντίζουν την ασφάλειά τους από μόνοι τους. Καθένας που σκοτώνει έναν λύκο επιδοτείται από το κράτος με περίπου 450 ευρώ. Για έναν χωρικό της περιοχής του Ιρκούτσκ, αυτό είναι ένα μεγάλο ποσό, όταν ο μέσος μισθός εδώ αντιστοιχεί σε περίπου 620 ευρώ. Ο προϋπολογισμός της περιοχής διαθέτει 6 εκατομμύρια ρούβλια (περίπου 140 χιλιάδες ευρώ) γι’ αυτές τις πληρωμές.

Τα ζώα και η ισορροπία της φύσης
Ο επικεφαλής της Διεύθυνσης «για την προστασία και την αξιοποίηση της φύσης, των υδάτινων πόρων και της περιβαλλοντικής ασφάλειας» της περιοχής του Οριόλ, Νικολάι Βισεγκορόντσκι, θεωρεί ότι η βίαιη «ρύθμιση» του πληθυσμού των λύκων πρέπει να γίνεται μόνο σε εξαιρετικές περιπτώσεις. «Οι άγριοι λύκοι σπανίως επιτίθενται σε ανθρώπους», λέει ο Βισεγκορόντσκι. «Το 60% της διατροφής τους αποτελούν οι αρουραίοι και άλλα μικρά ζώα. Φοβούνται τους ανθρώπους».

Σύμφωνα με τον ίδιο, οι λύκοι έχουν έναν σημαντικό ρόλο στην διατροφική αλυσίδα, γιατί έχουν κεντρική θέση σ’ αυτήν. «Ας πάρουμε, για παράδειγμα, την περιοχή του Οριόλ. Μόλις εμφανιστεί ένας λύκος, αμέσως μειώνεται ο αριθμός των αδέσποτων σκυλιών, γατών και αλεπούδων με λύσσα», συνεχίζει ο Βισεγκορόντσκι. «Καμιά φορά οι λύκοι τρώνε κατοικίδια. Όμως από την άποψη της φυσικής επιλογής, πρόκειται για μια φυσιολογική διαδικασία. Τα σκυλιά είναι κοινωνικά προσαρμοσμένα από τον άνθρωπο, και ανεπαρκώς προσαρμοσμένα για τη ζωή στην άγρια φύση, γι’ αυτό τα σκοτώνει ένας πιο δυνατός κρίκος της διατροφικής αλυσίδας, ο λύκος, ή ο τίγρης στην Άπω Ανατολή».

Ο Βισεγκορόντσκι υπογράμμισε ότι όταν μειωθεί σημαντικά ο αριθμός των λύκων στην περιοχή, τη θέση τους θα πάρουν οι αρουραίοι, οι αλεπούδες και τα άγρια σκυλιά που θα αναλάβουν τον ρόλο του αρπακτικού, και επίσης θα επιτίθενται σε ανθρώπους. Και σημειώνει ότι σ’ αυτή την περίπτωση οι λύκοι αποτελούν μάλλον τον «καλό της υπόθεσης».

Η εποχή όπου οι λύκοι ευημερούσαν και ήταν εξαπλωμένοι σε ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη, μας πάει αιώνες πίσω και συγκεκριμένα στο Μεσαίωνα. Όμως, από τη στιγμή που εμφανίστηκαν οι πρώτες οργανωμένες ανθρώπινες κοινωνίες με την παράλληλη άνθιση της γεωργικής εκμετάλλευσης και της κτηνοτροφίας, άρχισε και το συνεχές κυνήγι των λύκων που είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την εξόντωσή τους σε πολλά μέρη της Ευρώπης, όπως και στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία.

Σ’ αυτό συνέβαλε ο φόβος και η άγνοια των ανθρώπων γι’ αυτό το ζώο της άγριας φύσης. Αυτό φαίνεται από το γεγονός ότι πολλοί βασιλιάδες των αγγλοσαξονικών χρόνων, σύμφωνα με ιστορικές καταγραφές σε χειρόγραφα που φυλάσσονται στο Βρετανικό μουσείο, εξαπέλυαν κυνήγι λύκων με αντάλλαγμα διάφορα χρηματικά ποσά και εκτάσεις γης.

Συγκεκριμένα, αναφέρεται ότι ο Κωνσταντίνος της Ουαλίας πλήρωνε ετησίως φόρο υποτελείας στο βασιλιά Έντγκαρ της Αγγλίας 300 δέρματα λύκων, νούμερο ωστόσο αμφίβολο καθώς δε ξέρουμε αν υπήρχαν τόσοι λύκοι εκείνη την εποχή. Επίσης, διάφοροι Νορμανδοί βασιλιάδες (κυριάρχησαν κατά το διάστημα 1066-1152 μ.Χ.) χρησιμοποιούσαν δούλους με σκοπό τη θανάτωση λύκων αλλά και πρόσφεραν εκτάσεις γης σε όσους εκπλήρωναν αυτό το σκοπό.

Η επόμενη αναφορά σε λύκο έγινε το 1212 μ.Χ και οι καταγραφές συνεχίστηκαν μέχρι το 1281 μ.Χ όταν ο Έντουαρντ Ι (κυριάρχησε το διάστημα 1272-1307 μ.Χ) διέταξε την ολική εξολόθρευση των λύκων της Αγγλίας. Η εκστρατεία εξόντωσης ήταν επιτυχής και, έτσι, οι αναφορές σε λύκους μειώθηκαν, ενώ η τελευταία ήταν το 1290 μ.Χ. Οι καταδιώξεις όμως συνεχίστηκαν κατά τη βασιλεία του Ενρίκου ΙV (1422-1460μ.Χ) και μέχρι το 1500 μ.Χ είχαν εξαφανιστεί από την Αγγλία ολοσχερώς.

Ωστόσο, στη Σκωτία οι λύκοι επέζησαν μέχρι τον 17^ο αιώνα λόγω του πιο άγριου και βραχώδους τοπίου καθώς και του μικρότερου ανθρώπινου πληθυσμού και όχι εξαιτίας της έλλειψης καταδίωξης, η οποία άρχισε το 1283 μ.Χ. και διήρκησε μέχρι το έτος 1743 μ.Χ. κατά το οποίο, σύμφωνα με καταγραφές υπάρχουν ισχυρισμοί πολλών και διαφορετικών ανθρώπων πως σκότωσαν τον τελευταίο λύκο της Σκωτίας σε διάφορα μέρη.

Αξιοπρόσεχτο είναι το γεγονός ότι παρατηρήθηκε μια επανάκαμψη του πληθυσμού των λύκων το 1577 μ.Χ., καθώς βρήκαν καταφύγιο στα πλούσια δάση των Highlands. Όμως, τότε πολλά δάση κάηκαν και δέντρα κόπηκαν για να μην μπορούν να κρυφτούν οπότε ο αριθμός τους μειώθηκε δραματικά. Μέχρι περίπου το 1760 μ.Χ. όλος ο πληθυσμός των λύκων στα Βρετανικά νησιά είχε εξολοθρευτεί ολοκληρωτικά.

Παρολαυτά, έπειτα από πολλά χρόνια και αφού οι άνθρωποι άρχισαν να αναπτύσσουν μεγαλύτερη οικολογική ευαισθησία και να μαθαίνουν όλο και περισσότερα για το άγριο αυτό πλάσμα ξεκίνησαν και οι προσπάθειες επανένταξής τους σε αρκετές χώρες.

Είχε γίνει πλέον αντιληπτό πως το τίμημα της απουσίας των λύκων γινόταν όλο και μεγαλύτερο, καθώς καταστρεφόταν η φυσική ισορροπία εξαιτίας της θέσης που κατέχει ο λύκος στην κορυφή της τροφικής αλυσίδας και γι’ αυτό έχει το δικαίωμα να υπάρχει σε βιώσιμους πληθυσμούς στην άγρια φύση.

Συγκεκριμένα, στα Highlands της Σκωτίας ο πληθυσμός των κόκκινων ελαφιών και ζαρκαδιών τα οποία είναι η φυσική λεία των λύκων, αυξήθηκε υπερβολικά με αποτέλεσμα τη μείωση της βλάστησης λόγω της υπερβόσκησης και τη μετέπειτα αδυναμία αναγέννησης της χλωρίδας και του δάσους. Επιπλέον, τα ελάφια, χάνοντας τον φυσικό τους θηρευτή, έπαψαν να εξελίσσουν τα ευκίνητα και ελαφρά χαρακτηριστικά τους.

Οι προσπάθειες αυτές άρχισαν στα τέλη του 1960 και τις δεκαετίες του ‘80 και ’90, όταν η βρετανική κυβέρνηση υπέγραψε συμβάσεις στις οποίες δεσμευόταν να εξετάσει την επανένταξη των λύκων στη Βρετανία και να ενημερώσει τους πολίτες. Παράλληλα, η ιδέα αυτή υλοποιήθηκε το 1989 στις νοτιοανατολικές Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες με την επανένταξη του κόκκινου λύκου και το 1995 στο Εθνικό Πάρκο Yellowstone με την επανεισαγωγή του γκρίζου λύκου.

Έχοντας ως παράδειγμα την επανεισαγωγή στο Yellowstone σχεδιάζει και η Βρετανία μια αντίστοιχη επανένταξη. Καταλληλότερο έδαφος για την πραγματοποίηση αυτού του σχεδίου θεωρήθηκαν τα Highlands της Σκωτίας και λόγω του προβλήματος που υπάρχει με τον υπερπληθυσμό των ελαφιών που είναι άφθονη τροφή για τους λύκους αλλά και λόγω της τεράστιας έκτασής της, περίπου 25.000 , και του συγκριτικά πολύ μικρού αριθμού ανθρώπων (200.000).

Η έκταση αυτή είναι συνάμα απομονωμένη και τραχιά: η τέλεια περιοχή για να ευδοκιμήσει το είδος τους. Το σχέδιο, λοιπόν, σύμφωνα με μια εκτίμηση που προφανώς θα απέχει απ’ την πραγματικότητα έχει ως εξής: πρωταρχικό μέλημα κάθε σχεδίου για να πετύχει είναι η ενημέρωση του ευρύτερου κοινού για τη φύση αυτού του ζώου. Αυτό ίσως να επιτευχθεί με την ίδρυση ενός επιμορφωτικού κέντρου περιβαλλοντικής συνείδησης που αφορά στους λύκους.

Στη συνέχεια, θα πρέπει να βρεθεί μια περιοχή 500 όσο το δυνατόν χωρίς πρόβατα και να εισαχθούν για αρχή 2 λύκοι ώστε να επιβεβαιωθεί η ομαλή διαβίωσή τους και, αν όλα πηγαίνουν καλά, να εισαχθούν και άλλες μικρές ομάδες ως πυρήνας που αργότερα θα μπορούν να αναπαραχθούν και να επεκταθούν σε όλη την περιοχή. Όλα αυτά, βέβαια, προϋποθέτουν τη σωστή διαχείριση και συνεχή παρακολούθηση των λύκων.

Κατά προσέγγιση ο αριθμός των λύκων που θα μπορούσαν να φιλοξενήσουν τα Highlands είναι 250 λύκοι που θεωρείται αρκετά μεγάλος. Σε αριθμούς αυτό σημαίνει 25.000 των Highlands, 500 για κάθε λύκο και περίπου 5 λύκοι σε κάθε ομάδα οπότε 25.000/ 500×5= 250 λύκοι. Με το σχέδιο αυτό θα αναπτυχθεί και ο οικοτουρισμός της Σκωτίας και οι λύκοι θα προσελκύσουν κόσμο με αποτέλεσμα να επωφεληθούν οικονομικά και οι ίδιοι οι κάτοικοι από την επιστροφή τους.

Από την άλλη, όμως, υπάρχουν πολλοί πολέμιοι αυτού του σχεδίου με πρωτοπόρους τους προβατοτρόφους οι οποίοι ισχυρίζονται ότι οι λύκοι θα επιτίθενται στα ζώα τους και θα τα σκοτώνουν προκειμένου να τραφούν, αν και υπάρχουν αναφορές ότι το 2005 υπήρχαν στη Σκωτία 8 εκατομμύρια πρόβατα, και κανένα από αυτά δεν έχει αντικρίσει λύκο τα τελευταία 240 χρόνια. Σύμφωνα με μελέτες στις ΗΠΑ έχει παρατηρηθεί ότι αγέλες λύκων περνάνε κοντά από κοπάδια χωρίς να τα ενοχλούν και σπάνια τρέφονται με αυτά παρά μόνο όταν δεν βρίσκουν άγρια λεία. Επιπροσθέτως, από τον Ιανουάριο του 2005 άλλαξε το σκηνικό για την προβατοτροφία στην Σκωτία, και συγκεκριμένα οι επιχορηγήσεις που δίνονται στους κτηνοτρόφους δεν αναλογούν πλέον στον αριθμό των ζώων που εκτρέφονται αλλά είναι ανεξάρτητες από το ζωικό κεφάλαιο.

Έτσι, μετά από αυτή την αλλαγή θα είναι πιο εφικτή η δασική αποκατάσταση του αρκετά υποβαθμισμένου περιβάλλοντος της Σκωτίας, ιδιαίτερα του Καληδονιακού δάσους, ώστε να δημιουργηθούν βιότοποι κατάλληλοι για να φιλοξενήσουν και άλλα εξαφανισμένα θηράματα αλλά και θηρευτές με κορυφαίο το λύκο.

Άλλοι πολέμιοι της ιδέας ισχυρίζονται ότι η έκταση δεν φτάνει για να μπορέσουν να ζήσουν άνθρωποι και λύκοι αρμονικά και, τέλος, διαμαρτύρονται και οι πεζοπόροι που θεωρούν ότι θα πέσουν θύματα των λύκων παρόλο που σε πληθυσμό 1.000.000.000 ανθρώπων (Ευρώπη, Ρωσία, Βόρεια Αμερική) μόνο 17 άτομα σκοτώθηκαν από λύκο τα τελευταία 50 χρόνια.

Το σχέδιο που περιγράφηκε παραπάνω αλλά και οποιοδήποτε παρόμοιο τεθεί σε εφαρμογή ίσως δώσει την ευκαιρία στο γκρίζο λύκο να ζήσει και πάλι στα μέρη, όπου ανήκει, και που του στέρησε άδικα τόσα χρόνια το ανελέητο κυνήγι από τον άνθρωπο.

Εξάλλου τώρα πλέον γνωρίζουμε ότι ο λύκος δεν είναι το επικίνδυνο και αιμοβόρο θηρίο του παραμυθιού που όλοι νόμιζαν και μ’ αυτό τον τρόπο και θα εξιλεωθούμε για την περιφρονητική συμπεριφορά μας και θα μπορέσουμε να τον αφήσουμε στα χέρια της επόμενη γενιάς αφού αποτελεί ένα θεμελιώδες μέρος της φυσικής μας κληρονομιάς. Αυτή θα είναι λοιπόν μια σημαντική προσπάθεια να απομυθοποιηθεί αυτό το “τέρας”.

This edition of COSMIC JOURNEYS explores the still unfolding story of Earth's past and the light it sheds on the science of climate change today. While that story can tell us about the mechanisms that can shape our climate. it's still the unique conditions of our time that will determine sea levels, ice coverage, and temperatures.

Ice, in its varied forms, covers as much as 16% of Earth's surface, including 33% of land areas at the height of the northern winter. Glaciers, sea ice, permafrost, ice sheets and snow play an important role in Earth's climate. They reflect energy back to space, shape ocean currents, and spawn weather patterns.

But there are signs that Earth's great stores of ice are beginning to melt. To find out where Earth might be headed, scientists are drilling down into the ice, and scouring ancient sea beds, for evidence of past climate change. What are they learning about the fate of our planet... a thousand years into the future and even beyond?

30,000 years ago, Earth began a relentless descent into winter. Glaciers pushed into what were temperate zones. Ice spread beyond polar seas. New layers of ice accumulated on the vast frozen plateau of Greenland. At three kilometers thick, Greenland's ice sheet is a monumental formation built over successive ice ages and millions of years. It's so heavy that it has pushed much of the island down below sea level. And yet, today, scientists have begun to wonder how resilient this ice sheet really is.

Average global temperatures have risen about one degree Celsius since the industrial revolution. They could go up another degree by the end of this century. If Greenland's ice sheet were to melt, sea levels would rise by over seven meters. That would destroy or threaten the homes and livelihoods of up to a quarter of the world's population.

With so much at stake, scientists are monitoring Earth's frozen zones... with satellites, radar flights, and expeditions to drill deep into ice sheets. And they are reconstructing past climates, looking for clues to where Earth might now be headed... not just centuries, but thousands of years in the future.

Periods of melting and freezing, it turns out, are central events in our planet's history.
That's been born out by evidence ranging from geological traces of past sea levels... the distribution of fossils... chemical traces that correspond to ocean temperatures, and more.

Going back over two billion years, earth has experienced five major glacial or ice ages. The first, called the Huronian, has been linked to the rise of photosynthesis in primitive organisms. They began to take in carbon dioxide, an important greenhouse gas. That decreased the amount of solar energy trapped by the atmosphere, sending Earth into a deep freeze.

The second major ice age began 580 million years ago. It was so severe, it's often referred to as "snowball earth." The Andean-Saharan and the Karoo ice ages began 460 and 360 million years ago. Finally, there's the Quaternary... from 2.6 million years ago to the present. Periods of cooling and warming have been spurred by a range of interlocking factors: the movement of continents, patterns of ocean circulation, volcanic events, the evolution of plants and animals.

The world as we know it was beginning to take shape in the period from 90 to 50 million years ago. The continents were moving toward their present positions. The Americas separated from Europe and Africa. India headed toward a merger with Asia. The world was getting warmer. Temperatures spiked roughly 55 million years ago, going up about 5 degrees Celsius in just a few thousand years. CO2 levels rose to about 1000 parts per million compared to 280 in pre-industrial times, and 390 today.

But the stage was set for a major cool down. The configuration of landmasses had cut the Arctic off from the wider oceans. That allowed a layer of fresh water to settle over it, and a sea plant called Azolla to spread widely. In a year, it can soak up as much as 6 tons of CO2 per acre. Plowing into Asia, the Indian subcontinent caused the mighty Himalayan Mountains to rise up. In a process called weathering, rainfall interacting with exposed rock began to draw more CO2 from the atmosphere... washing it into the sea. Temperatures steadily dropped.

By around 33 million years ago, South America had separated from Antarctica. Currents swirling around the continent isolated it from warm waters to the north. An ice sheet formed. In time, with temperatures and CO2 levels continuing to fall, the door was open for a more subtle climate driver. It was first described by the 19th century Serbian scientist, Milutin Milankovic.

He saw that periodic variations in Earth's rotational motion altered the amount of solar radiation striking the poles. In combination, every 100,000 years or so, these variations have sent earth into a period of cool temperatures and spreading ice.

They act like an immense battery that can store and release energy over long periods of time, while transporting heat from warm to cool regions. The oceans are set in motion by the unevenness of solar heating... due to the amount of sunlight striking the tropics versus the poles, along with the cycles of day and night and the seasons.

That causes warm, tropical winds to blow toward the poles, and cold polar air to push toward the equator. Wind currents, in turn, drive surface ocean currents. This computer simulation shows the Gulfstream winding its way north along the coast of North America. This great ocean river carries enough heat energy to power the industrial world a hundred times over.

It breaks down in massive whirlpools that spread warm tropical waters over northern seas. Below the surface, this current mixes with cold deep currents that swirl around undersea ledges and mountains. When heat builds within tropical oceans in late summer, it can be released in a fury.

The new film, created by the Museum, is part of an exhibition, Visions of the Cosmos: From the Milky Ocean to an Evolving Universe, at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan through May 2010.

Under the Antarctic Ice - Beauty of The Nature

The Antarctic ice sheet is one of the two polar ice caps of the Earth. It covers about 98% of the Antarctic continent and is the largest single mass of ice on Earth. It covers an area of almost 14 million square km and contains 26.5 million cubic km of ice. That is, approximately 61 percent of all fresh water on the Earth is held in the Antarctic ice sheet, an amount equivalent to 70 m of water in the world's oceans. In East Antarctica, the ice sheet rests on a major land mass, but in West Antarctica the bed can extend to more than 2,500 m below sea level. The land in this area would be seabed if the ice sheet were not there.

The icing of Antarctica began with ice-rafting from middle Eocene times about 45.5 million years ago and escalated inland widely during the Eocene--Oligocene extinction event about 34 million years ago. CO2 levels were then about 760 ppm and had been decreasing from earlier levels in the thousands of ppm. Carbon dioxide decrease, with a tipping point of 600 ppm, was the primary agent forcing Antarctic glaciation.

The glaciation was favored by an interval when the Earth's orbit favored cool summers but Oxygen isotope ratio cycle marker changes were too large to be explained by Antarctic ice-sheet growth alone indicating an ice age of some size.The opening of the Drake Passage may have played a role as well though models of the changes suggest declining CO2 levels to have been more important.

Ice enters the sheet through precipitation as snow. This snow is then compacted to form glacier ice which moves under gravity towards the coast. Most of it is carried to the coast by fast moving ice streams. The ice then passes into the ocean, often forming vast floating ice shelves. These shelves then melt or calve off to give icebergs that eventually melt.

If the transfer of the ice from the land to the sea is balanced by snow falling back on the land then there will be no net contribution to global sea levels. A 2002 analysis of NASA satellite data from 1979--1999 showed that while overall the land ice is decreasing, areas of Antarctica where sea ice was increasing outnumbered areas of decreasing sea ice roughly 2:1.

The general trend shows that a warming climate in the southern hemisphere would transport more moisture to Antarctica, causing the interior ice sheets to grow, while calving events along the coast will increase, causing these areas to shrink. A 2006 paper derived from satellite data, measures changes in the gravity of the ice mass, suggests that the total amount of ice in Antarctica has begun decreasing in the past few years.

Another recent study compared the ice leaving the ice sheet, by measuring the ice velocity and thickness along the coast, to the amount of snow accumulation over the continent. This found that the East Antarctic Ice Sheet was in balance but the West Antarctic Ice Sheet was losing mass. This was largely due to acceleration of ice streams such as Pine Island Glacier. These results agree closely with the gravity changes.

The estimate published in November 2012 and based on the GRACE data as well as on an improved glacial isostatic adjustment model indicates that an average yearly mass loss was 69 ± 18 Gt/y from 2002 to 2010. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet was approximately in balance while the East Antarctic Ice Sheet gained mass. The mass loss was mainly concentrated along the Amundsen Sea coast.
