Up North: When in Laoag

The Ilocos Region, especially Pagudpud, has been on my bucket list because I like the beach and a bit of Spanish Era feels (and because of the pictures posted online!). And when Cebu Pacific had a sale I didn't think twice and booked our tickets for Ilocos to fulfill my bucket list. This will also be a celebration for my parents birthdays! We stayed in Ilocos Region for 4 days and 3 nights and I tried to squeeze in all tourist destinations of Laoag City and its surrounding towns, North and South Pagudpud, and Vigan! Whew, it was exhausting but it was all worth it!

Day 1 - A bit of Laoag City at Night

7pm - Our plan was to take the plane to Laoag from Manila and take the 10-hour bus trip from Vigan to Manila. From Laoag International Airport to Hotel Tiffany we boarded a van for Php100/person which was more convenient and comfortable for us (there is a free shuttle bus mentioned in most of the blogs, but it was not available at that time). They say the tricycles had the same rate, but I could not prove this. The trip took around 10-15 minutes, and the van dropped us off at the hotel. Though initially there was a problem with our reservation, we had a pleasant overnight stay in Hotel Tiffany. I was happy because the hotel was just a few blocks away from most of the destinations in Laoag City proper and also from the local market, Puregold, SM Savemore, and Hypermarket (plus points for my mother. Haha).

7:30pm - We had dinner at La Preciosa and we ordered the much recommended Ilokano dishes of the restaurant: Poqui-Poqui, Igado, Pinakbet Chicharon, Crispy Dinuguan, Pansit Lusay, and Gamet Omelet. All were tasty, the goodness of home cooking! I particularly loved the Poqui-Poqui or grilled eggplant omelet. Gamet omelet was similar to poqui-poqui unfortunately. The pansit lusay was more wet than what we are used to in a pansit (maybe because it has tomatoes). The restaurant is also known for their cakes, but we were so full I could not make room for it anymore.

8:30pm - After dinner we decided to walk off what we ate towards the Capitol, which was around 10 minutes. While my mother was buying something from SM Hypermarket I dragged my father across to Aurora Park and took pictures of him at the fountain and Tobacco Monopoly Monument. When my mother was done with grocery, we took pictures at the Ilocos Norte Capitol.

We passed by Dap-ayan and we thought it was the bus station! It was only when we got back to the hotel that I realized what it was. I think the place is like an open food court and I have read in a blog that this is where you could get a tasty Laoag empanada (Alicia's).

9pm - And because my cousin and I wanted to ride the kalesa ever since we arrived, we asked around where we could find one. Unfortunately it was a little bit late but thankfully there were two kalesas waiting in front of Puregold. ( I think these two kalesas are in front of Puregold every night waiting for late night passengers because we saw them again the next night. Maybe the drivers are bestfriends. Hehe. So if you can't see a kalesa, better head to Puregold).

We paid Php 150 for a trip around the city, but there was nothing interesting. But we were able to feel the quietness and laidback feel of Laoag at night which reminded me of my hometown 20 years ago (my town is being eaten away by modernization). I also could not help but imagine the life during the Spanish era with each clip-clop of the horse's feet. Btw, you could also ride a kalesa to any destination within Laoag City for Php15. (I feel bad for the horses because they have to stand all day and get exhausted from pulling passengers)

The kalesa dropped us off in front of our hotel and we tucked in for the night, to have some rest and be ready the next day for an adventure at LaPaz sand dunes and a tour of Laoag City and its surrounding towns!

FILIPINO STREET FOOD: INASAL, ISAW, and the many others

Wherever you go in the Philippines, hunger will always be satisfied. There are lots of sari-sari store, karinderia/turo-turo, local fastfood, and of course the never absent street food vendors. I myself love street food because it's more economical, fun, and admittedly flavorful. And take note, there are those inasalan who became well-known and are linked to a destination because of their tasty food.

THE INASAL
Inasal means grilled, and the Filipino has transformed almost all parts of the chicken to this. The head, neck, body parts, and almost all the internal organs of the chicken was not spared by the ingenuity of the Filipino. Pork is also a common meat in the inasalan. Prices range from Php 3 to Php 50. Here is an example of what you may encounter in the insalan:

isaw - hog/chicken intestines
proven - chicken proventriculus
ewe/pwet ng manok - chicken ass
adidas - chicken feet
tenga - pig's ears
maskara - meat from face area of a pig

And the list is endless! The more familiar internal organs are also present, like the liver, gizzard (balun-balunan, my favorite), and chicken skin. Pork meat and chicken meat are also available. These are all either grilled over hot charcoal or maybe coated with flour and deep-fried. And because Filipinos are fond of putting sauces in every dishes for an extra kick (i'm soooo guilty!!), all inasalan comes with their versions of sauces (sweet, hot, spiced vinegar, or you can mix all) where you can dip the cooked inasal.

Some stalls have even evolved to restaurants just to cater the ever growing patrons of their delicious food. (Click here to read about the famous chicken inasal of Bacolod City!)
Warning though. Because the preparation of food may be unsanitary, and because it's being displayed and cooked in the streets, some stomachs could not endure the bacteria that may be proliferating in these foods. Consult your medical doctors ASAP when signs of diarrhea and dehydration are felt :).

Filipino food may seem to be exotic, gross, or a mish-mash of everything to the point of disgust, but once tasted you'll always ask for more because the flavors just bursts in your taste buds and become etched in your memory forever. Many have said that Filipino food is under-represented, so that's why I am now letting the whole world know why it's more fun to eat here in the Philippines!

Negros Occidental is known to be the "Sugarbowl of the Philippines", where sugarcane is planted and harvested in its rich and vast plains. The region is also blessed with mountains, and with these comes the many resorts which made the beauty of the mountainside accessible to those who want to enjoy the scenery. " I have seen the view myself and it was so amazing! I could even see the port where seacrafts from Iloilo City docks. Yes, it was spectacular!

You may choose a day trip, where you can stay at their cottages or huts (Php 500-Php1000), or stay overnight and experience the chilly fresh air of the mountain. BALESIN ISLAND CLUB: Ultimate Indulgence

It's popular among the stars - numerous weddings, pre-nups, and maybe a quiet getaway, and recently this place has made headlines because of its "Yaya Meals". But one thing's for sure, once you've seen and experienced the beauty of Balesin you'll always be forever mesmerized and daydream about this place. I know because until now I can't get over this jewel of an island!

We were so lucky to have been invited to visit this members' only private island getaway and enjoy its pristine white-sand beaches. Balesin Island Club is by Alphaland Corporation, just 20 minutes away from Manila by chartered plane and, quoted from their official website, "offers villas and amenities patterned after some of the most luxurious beachside resorts around the world." It has seven themed villages, where architecture, the food, and everything was recreated. The seven themed villages are Balesin, Bali, Phuket, Mykonos, St. Tropez, Costa del Sol, and Toscana. Recently the Balesin Royal Villa was added, and true to its name it has such opulence fit for a royalty.

Rico's Hideaway

It was the ultimate indulgence, luxury, or whatever you may call it! We were in Paradise! At each village we went into we couldn't help but be amazed, and of course we took a loooooot of pictures! The pristine white sand-beaches, the view, the architecture, the design, the food. Everything was perfect!

My most favorite beach was at Balesin Village because it reminds me of Boracay 15years ago. The calm, clean, and pristine waters just makes you want to take a dip the moment you set eyes on it.

Costa del Sol

We stayed in Costa del Sol which features Spanish architecture and of course, Spanish food (I seem to be craving for paellas these days) . It has two swimming pool: one is saltwater, the other one is freshwater. And this could be an inspiration to my dream home: high arched and open windows to let in the fresh air, and verandas and terraces for lounging. Siesta galore!

Each of the villages has its own restaurant so we get to taste Asian, Greek, Spanish, and Italian food and get a glimpse of how each meal may be served in each culture.

For the villages the best view for me was at Toscana, inspired by Tuscany in Italy. (This is where the reception for Heart and Chiz's wedding was held).

Phuket Village

Means of transportation in the island are jeepneys (which are free of charge) and golf carts (which can be rented) and is available 24 hours. Wi-Fi at the Clubhouse has a strong connection but gets slow at the other villages. My SmartBro mobile had the strongest connection over the main roads but gets weak or is lost over our villa at Costa del Sol. Same goes I think for Globe .

St. Tropez, as they say, has the best view of the sunrise. Unfortunately we haven't had the chance to witness such event because it means we have to be awake by 4:30 am. Hehe. Don't judge us. We were so exhausted in visiting the seven villages under the heat of the sun :)

To visit the Balesin Royal Villa, one must book a tour at the main Clubhouse to check if there are events scheduled because the place is intended for private functions. At the other villages you can come and go as you please and use all the amenities.

All in all, it was a pleasant experience. The staff are courteous and ever ready to assist in any way they can.

Rainy Dabaw: A 3-day itinerary

When Cebu Pacific had their seat sale, we grabbed the opportunity to book and visit the most disciplined city in the Philippines, where else but Davao City. It was our family's first time in Mindanao and tough it was raining, our spirits weren't dampened. I tried to squeeze all the must-visit and must-do but alas, due to the rain and time constraints we weren't able to do all. It was so bitin! But still we had fun and memories (our favorite Tito was there to guide us). Check-out our trip for 3 days and 3 nights.

Weather was fair, the skies were gray but the sun is peeping through. It was our first time after how many years to see once again our favorite Tito! Spirits were up and everyone was excited.

SANDBAR RESORT: Back to basics

My sister was home and she wanted to go to the beach. It was (un)timely because the father of our cousin's wife E recently passed away and the wake and burial will be at Concepcion, Iloilo. And because the said place is home to some of the popular islands of Northern Iloilo, we headed to Sandbar Resort in Bolobadiangan Island to stay overnight and have a chance to attend the burial scheduled the next day.

We boarded a small fishing boat (owned by cousins of E) to transport us to Bolobadiangan Island, which took about 30 minutes. We have to wade in the waters because it was low tide when we arrived. For convenience, I recommend to contact Sandbar Resort for your transportation because they have a bigger boat for their guests and they leave from the main port of mainland Concepcion.

Just as we were nearing the island, a drizzle started. And thankfully it was all that. We were able to enjoy the island and had some fun before the night prevents us so. Take note that electricity by generator runs only from 5pm-10pm. We stayed on a closed cottage provided with mattresses, pillows, and blankets. A simple comfort room and bathroom is also available for use. However, water for bathing is sold at Php 25/container.

We bought our own food, but the resort can also prepare food if you will tell them days before. You can also grill your own food on the island or you can have them cook for you for a small price. Some fishermen will dock on the island and sell fish if they know there are guests staying. You can also have these cooked for you. Bummer for us because no fishermen docked for the whole time we stayed there. Also you have to buy all that you need from the mainland because there's no store in the island.

Because of exhaustion and there was literally nothing else to do, we slept even before the lights were off. But it was an uneasy sleep for me because of the sound of the waters rushing in for high tide. Aside from that, the night was peaceful. However, morning was another story. We woke up around 6am and we were greeted by such a beautiful dawn! It was a promise that the coming morning will be much fun. And we were not dismayed!

We were not able to do some island hopping because the resort's boat was made to fetch some guests and they arrived late. We didn't have the time because we still have to attend the burial. I really hope that we can be back here and explore more the other islands. Fingers crossed!

This was what we were all looking forward to. The cool and clean waters, bright sand reflecting the equally bright sun, the peacefulness of the surrounding, and the blueness of the sky makes it a perfect weekend. We had fun exploring the areas of the beach at low tide and when the waters slowly crept up for high tide, it was time for us to swim until forever!

This is not like Boracay, so don't expect the crowds and the nightlife. However if you want a quiet getaway, to get a taste of simple island living, and just appreciate and marvel at the wonders of the Philippines, then this is for you. When we stayed here we were the only guests. But the next day, which was Saturday, a lot of families were coming in which shows the popularity of the island.

Most of the resort's infrastructure was damaged by Typhoon Yolanda and they are slowly rebuilding using the money from their income. So plan your trip now to Sandbar Resort to help them and also to enjoy!

PLAYA DE PARAISO: Continuation of Paradise

Playa De Paraiso was such a paradise that I will surely be back here to relax and unwind. Check the rates below and see how affordable their prices are.

Rates as of August 2014

The Standard Queen is good for 6 persons and comes with a complimentary breakfast (I don't know if the complimentary is also good for 6 persons).

What I did not enjoyed was the mosquitoes at night (we ended up turning the light on for the rest of the night) and that the blanket was not that comfortable (I don't know if one can ask for additional linens from the desk. We haven't asked because the desk was already closed for the night).

Battered Chicken

We had a limited selection of food for our dinner: we only had Battered Chicken and Beef Teriyaki because these were the only ones available. Our mistake was that we haven't ordered in advance, which is what one should do if you're thinking of spending the night here.

Food is priced at Php 150-200 and can serve 2-3 persons. They have a wide selection of food to choose from: chicken, pork, and seafood.

You can either choose to dine at the restaurant located at the second floor and have a good view of the resort, or you could just dine near the pool which we did.

To get here, we commuted and boarded a Cabano-bound van (or jeep, whichever comes first in the line) that was waiting in Buenavista port. Tell the driver to drop you off inside the resort. The fare is Php 35. Check in is by 12nn. Because of scarcity of jeepneys passing by, ask the driver if you could have his number so that he could pick you up on you return home. Or you could wait for a motorcycle, which we did, to take you to Buenavista port. We paid the motorcycle driver Php 180.

Whenever you're in Iloilo City or Guimaras, I highly recommend Playa De Paraiso for that serene and much needed rest from the stress of life. :)

PLAYA DE PARAISO: Another Paradise within Paradise

The heavens have connived: schedule and weather permitted us to have a taste of paradise on Ghost Month (that is August, where there will always be rain and typhoon lurking around the corner). And so one hot hot afternoon, we head to Buenavista, Guimaras and traveled to Playa de Paraiso.

And i was captured by the place from the moment I set my eyes on it! It was my dream place! The house, the pool, and it was (duh) beside the beach! I could never tire of this place, and I'll keep coming back here (it's worthy to note this early on).

From the receiving area, I was already captured by the beauty of the place. I couldn't wait to explore more what it has to offer!

THE POOL

The deepest part of the pool is 7 feet, so I got a chance to dive in which felt great! There was a kiddie pool but I didn't get the chance to take a picture of it. The pool is open 8am-8pm and of course requires proper attire before one could take a dip into it.

THE BEACH

The sand was not powdery white, and it was low tide when we arrived so all we did was some photo shoot. We also got a chance to take a closer look at the mangroves which was situated at the left side of the beach.

A tranquil place and a good view indeed makes this place a paradise. Plus points for me is that the place is well-kept, it has a wi-fi and cable TV (which does not work once it rains unfortunately), aircon rooms (though it does not make the room that cold), and hot/cold shower (yes I really love hot showers!).

BALING HAI BEACH RESORT: Your quiet spot in Boracay

We stayed in BalingHai in Boracay(courtesy of Sir Otik through my sister) before the summer sun sets this year. It was a break from the stress and the noise of the White Beach. If you want to meditate, a quiet time in Boracay, and to just relax away from all the partying BalingHai Beach Resort is the one for you.

Carved in a cliff, BalingHai was one of the first beach resorts established in Boracay way back in the '80's. Through the vision of the owner Sir Otik, he has combined nature and modern facilities to suite every visitor's need and at the same time reminding all for the need to preserve nature and its inhabitants. At night you will be amazed by the sunset view and be lulled to sleep by chirping cicadas, and come morning you will be awaken by the waves crashing along the beach line and to a beautiful sunrise.

One fun thing in BalingHai is the pulley basket. It serves as the transport system for the food from the main restaurant to the beach side bar 50 meters below.

One could swim without hustle in the resort's private, pristine cove. Nature lovers will surely enjoy the lushness of the flora and the abundance of the fauna.

And once in a while you'll get a visit from some of the resort's mainstay, the hermit crabs!

Explore nooks of BalingHai's cliff and discover some hidden treasures. Also look for the gateway to Diniwid beach (but let the staff know first if you could pass through it ^_^)

BACOLOD CITY: FELICIA's Pastry Cafe

Every time I search for things to do in Bacolod City, the name Calea always pops-up. It is famous for its chocolate cakes and cheesecakes. But since I was not satisfied the last time I've eaten a Calea chocolate cake I've decided to try out another brand.

A friend who has lived in the City of Smiles for over a year recommended Felicia's in Lacson St. She said their chocolate cake tasted better than Calea's so I told K to take me there before we enjoy ourselves in L's wedding.

Located in 6th street, Felicia's storefront reminded me so of an elegant and formal cafe. Upon entering the cafe was cozy, and the pastry display would already fill your eyes with such inviting colors and decorations. What's more to like (for me and K) was the quietness of the place, unlike Calea that bustles with tourists and locals.

I asked the very accommodating staff behind the counter what their cake best sellers, so I ordered one slice each of Sans Rival and Chocolate cake (what I came for in the first place).

The Sans Rival was heavenly. It was just with the right sweetness and I appreciate it because it's not too buttery for my taste.

Felicia's Chocolate cake was moist, but I think I want mine with more sweetness in it. For me, MerNel's chocolate cake is still the best so far ^_^ (click here to read about MerNel's).

French Macaroons, Php 40 each

And I couldn't resist the eye-catching and delectable colors of the French macaroons so I ordered a take out. Upon arriving home, the macaroons were almost crumbly but the fillings were good, though I don't like the strong mint taste though. (So maybe it is best to put these into the fridge.)

After searching the web, I found out that Felicia's ensaymada is also a must-try. But I found this out too late. Hehe. But after going through their Facebook page their cakes are available in Steps of Rome restaurant here in Iloilo City, so maybe I'll take a peek there and see what other goodies they have from Felicia's ^_^. And Felicia's also serves full meals, from breakfast to dinner.

And one more thing, Manong Guard was so attentive that he hailed a cab for us and offered us a shade in his umbrella (which unfortunately didn't even shaded us, but still I'm satisfied with his service).

BACOLOD CITY: AIDA'S chicken

Bacolod City is well known not only for its sugar but also for its chicken inasal (grilled chicken). A trip to the City of Smiles is not complete without having a taste of this famous inasal, where else, but in Manokan Country.

Located beside SM City Bacolod and near Bacolod seaport, Manokan Country houses several native-style stalls made up of wood and bamboo that serves the delicious chicken inasal and other grilled food. Friends who have lived in Bacolod will always let us eat in Aida's, one of the stalls inside Manokan Country.

Actually I don't know what made this chicken house famous, that it even made the list of Esquire Philippine magazine's Best Restaurants of 2012. Maybe it's the taste of their chicken, the service, or even the place itself.

Because it was high noon, me and K satisfied our hunger here in Aida's. As we enter the restaurant, the staff who were waiting near the door approached us and took our orders right away. I ordered their pecho (breast part) chicken inasal while K ordered pork inasal and chorizo. And because it was blazing hot (the day made even hotter by the boxing title fight of Donaire. Unfortunately he lost to Rigondeaux) we also ordered 1 Liter of soda.

As our order arrived the waitress asked if we would use utensils, we said yes and she went to the kitchen to fetch the utensils. (In chicken inasal houses it's customary to just use the hands for eating because its the native way and for added experience. But if you are not comfortable you can always ask for the utensils. Also as you will notice, a bottle filled with oil is within the condiments tray. It is chicken oil, and you may pour it into your rice for added flavor).

As we were eating, I commented to K that there was nothing different with the taste of their chicken inasal to others that I have eaten. I also said that maybe because Aida's has been a favorite both by locals and tourists is maybe because of its taste (this I could not compare to other stalls because I have only eaten in Aida's), the quality of their service, and also the well-maintained place.

There are also peddlers of talaba but we didn't bother to try it out. I think K mentioned that a saucer-sized serving may cost Php 50.

And so we emerged with a full stomach and a satisfied hunger, ready to face the scorching heat before L's wedding.

BACOLOD CITY: The City of Smiles Half Day Only

It was one of my bestfriend's wedding, and we have no choice but to travel to Bacolod for it. Hehehe. Prior to this day I already researched on what to do in the City of Smiles (which as many says to be about food and old houses), but unfortunately because of time constraints (and Filipino time of being late) we haven't done so much sightseeing so I will share of what little we did there ^_^.

From Iloilo City we were supposed to be on the 9:50 am trip of Weesam Express (click here for their schedule) but because as I say due to Filipino time, we arrived too late. So we took the 10:45 am trip of Ocean Jet instead.

We arrived after about an hour of rolling in the waves (they say at this time of day the waves are usually rolling so better prepare your anti-motion sickness tablets if you may ^_^), and upon seeing the coastline of Bacolod I couldn't wait to get out of that roller coaster ride!

Upon arriving we were greeted by our friend, the groom himself, and ushered us to the van that will take us to where he booked us for the night, at Check Inn Pension Arcade which is just minutes away from Bacolod seaport.

Because we arrived a little too early for check-in time and there were no rooms available at that moment, me and my friend K decided to eat lunch at, where else, but the famous Manokan Country of Bacolod for that taste of chicken inasal. Since K has lived for over a year in the City of Smiles she became my tour guide, so she brought us to Aida's which has become the most famous of the many stalls located in Manokan Country. So obviously I satisfied my hunger with a chicken petso (breast) while K dined in on pork barbecue and chorizo.

After some errands we had dessert at Felicia's Pastry Cafe on Lacson St. for a change from the usual Calea. We had the chocolate cake and sans rival, and both tasted good. And look at the time, it was almost 3 pm and the wedding will start at 4:30 pm so we rushed back to Check Inn to get ready.

La Costa Brava

Because it was a Greek-themed wedding it was held in La Costa Brava, the first Spanish-inspired residential resort in Negros Occidental (according to their website). Uhm although not a Greek-inspired resort, it still comes close to being Greek because of its still Mediterranean concept. And especially during sunset when the sun casts its soft glow, you'll be imagining yourself in Santorini.

And as that day unfolds, two hearts and souls were paired forever and they may be true to their vows to be with each other through thick and thin for as long as they live. And for us their friends, we were so happy to see them both smiling and being kilig with each other. All of our expenses were worth it (the dress, fare, accommodation, effort! but greatly acknowledged ^_^) just to be a witness to that glorious day and also to see each other for longer than usual. So long Bacolod, hope to see you soon (for housewarming perhaps. hehe)!

BONIFACIO HIGH STREET in BGC

In television especially in talk shows, and in magazines I could often hear or read something about this and that store in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) being advertised to be a must visit, or this restaurant in BGC is a must-try. Well, I was wondering what BGC looks like at that time. And before I went home to our hometown my sister brought me to Bonifacio High Street for a change from the usual malls around Manila. And as I step down the cab, I was full of wonder. I couldn't get enough of the sights of stores with popular brands and those not yet known but with pretty store fronts! I was like let loose in the candy store :)

Bonifacio Global City (or BGC for short) used to be where Fort Bonifacio is, a permanent headquarters of the Philippine Army, was located. Today, it is a premiere highly urbanized district in Taguig City where offices of major corporations, upscale condos, and of course retail outlets and great food are found. One of the shopping areas in BGC is the Bonifacio High Street. Here you can see retail stores of international and local brands lining both side of the park. Tired after your shopping or strolling? No problem because a number of restaurants, coffee shops, and bars are also located here. We chose to dine in Elias which serves Filipino food, and had some rock salt blended tea in Happy Lemon.

Many artworks are scattered around BGC and even in Bonifacio High Street. One of these is the Specific Gravity by Reg Yuson. It serves as a fountain and signifies the connection between the audience as the mobile participant and their primordial affinity to gravity.

PH-INDONESIA RORO TRIPS THIS 2013

According to ABS-CBN News, a Philippine roll-on, roll-of (or RORO) will start its trips which will utilize the Davao-GenSan to Bitung, Indonesia route to start in the middle of this year. The Philippine Chamber of Commerce stated that this project between the two countries will improve trade, tourism, and connectivity. This is also our country's first RORO service to an ASEAN country. The project was pursued after a memorandum of cooperation between Davao City and Manado (Indonesia) chambers of commerce was signed last November.

Hmmmmm. A wonderful news for those backpackers and travelers, and especially to the business sector. A new adventure for thrill seekers and a new route for budget travelers. And reading on further news Super Shuttle, which is a Cebu-based company, committed to initially service the Davao-Bitung route once a week (read source here).

SARIWON KOREAN BARBECUE: An nyoung!

It was my friend's birthday and we wanted to eat out for a late lunch. It was a Saturday and we wanted a place where there will be minimal traffic and people: where else but in Bonifacio High Street. We decided to try Sariwon Korean Barbecue.

This is my first time in a Korean resto and I was very excited since I have been a fan of Korean dramas. I can now eat what my favorite characters are having. :)

Sariwon is nice. The lighting and furnitures used are pleasing to the eye. Each table has 4 seats and just right for family dinners and for couples. We were given dehydrated towels. These are thumb-sized tablets which transform into towels when hot water is poured over them. We were amazed!

We ordered Bibimbap and Galbi

Galbi is marinated beef and was grilled in front of us. Good thing that the grill was smokeless! It was a nice experience watching the waitress cook your food. After cooking, the meat was cut into bite-sized pieces. It was delicious and I ate it wrapped in the greens.

We were given fresh greens and lots of side dishes. And these were unlimited! They have the sweetened anchovies (or dilis), sweet potato (or kamote), marble potatoes (I think honeyed), and of course kimchi. There were two other side dishes but I did not recognize them (radish I think).

Bibimbap is a rice dish mixed with sauteed vegetables and topped with egg. It was delicous and have a way better taste than what I usually get from a stall in Megamall. The rice was flavorful and the vegetables were not oily.

After our meal, we decided to order Soju to celebrate my friend's birthday and also to compete our Korean experience. Man, it is so strong! One bottle took us around 2 hours to finish, considering we are seasoned drinkers. And we had the unlimited side dishes as pulutan. Our favorites were the marble potatoes and the sweet potato (this is just a coincidence that they are all potatoes :).

Overall, the dining experience in Sariwon Korean Barbecue was very good. Food was great but pricey although sulit because we stayed in the place for a good 3 hours.

WHEN SOMETHING STINGS: A guide on bee/wasp sting

I was busy tending my farm in Farmville 2 at 2 AM in my room, when suddenly, something landed near me and I reacted quickly! For you know, I don't like any insects crawling around my bed because it could get inside my ears! What I saw was an unfamiliar visitor in my room, a wasp.

Actually I'm not familiar with how wasps look like, so I immediately Googled it and indeed it was a wasp. I didn't know how it got into my room, and I tried shooing it (or better yet, squishing it before it stings me) but it was faster than me. I got up and there was no sign of it.

But suddenly I felt this pain in my left knee, a pain that I couldn't quite figure where exactly in my knee. It was, as they say, burning all over. Then I saw this pinpoint stab in my knee.

Although I was at home, this could very likely happen to anyone who's traveling especially now that Summer is here. Don't take it lightly because bees and wasps stings could lead to severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) which can cause death. So here's a brief note about bees and wasp sting and how to treat it.

Hymenoptera Stings, Harrison's Internal Medicine 17th ed.

Uncomplicated stings can cause immediate pain, a wheal and flare reaction, and local edema and swelling that subsides in a few hours. Multiple stings can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, generalized edema, dyspnea, hypotension, and collapse. Serious allergy reactions may be rapidly fatal, and usually begins within 10 min of the sting and only rarely develop after 5 h.

In my case, the hypersensitivity reaction was caused by the venom from the wasp, and thankfully it was an uncomplicated one.

Other signs and symptoms to watch out for:
Mild allergy reactions: nausea, abdominal cramping, generalized urticaria, flushing, and angioedema.
Serious allergy reactions: difficulty in breathing, low blood pressure, shock.

Treatment:
1. Stingers from honeybees imbedded in the skin should be removed ASAP by any method to limit the spread of the venom.
2. Site should be cleansed and disinfected.
3. Ice packs should be applied to slow the spread of venom.
4. For relief of symptoms: elevate the affected site; analgesics and antihistamines; topical calamine lotion
5. For patients with multiple stings, they should be observed in a hospital for 24H.
6. For severe allergy reaction, patient should be brought to the nearest medical facility for anaphylaxis treatment.

Upon googling wasp sting, I clicked the article from webmd.com and here's how to do first aid:

If the person does not have severe allergy symptoms:
1. Remove the Stinger

Scrape the area with a fingernail or use tweezers to remove it.

Don't pinch the stinger -- that can inject more venom.

2. Control Swelling

Ice the area.

If you were stung on your arm or leg, elevate it.

Remove any tight-fitting jewelry from the area of the sting. As it swells, rings or bracelets might become hard to get off.

3. Treat Symptoms

For pain, take an over-the-counter painkiller like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Do not give aspirin to anyone under age 18.

For itchiness, take an antihistamine. You can also apply a mixture of baking soda and water or calamine lotion.

4. Follow-Up
It might take 2-5 days for the area to heal. Keep it clean to prevent infection.

If the person does have severe allergy symptoms (anaphylaxis):

1. Call 911 (or in my case and for those without 911, go immediately to a nearest hospital).Seek emergency care if the person has these symptoms or a history of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), even if there are no symptoms:

Difficulty breathing or wheezing

Tightness in the throat or a feeling that the airways are closing

Hoarseness or trouble speaking

Nausea, abdominal pain, or vomiting

Fast heartbeat or pulse

Skin that itches, tingles, swells, or turns red

Anxiety or dizziness

Loss of consciousness

2. Inject Epinephrine ImmediatelyIf the person has an anaphylaxis action plan from a doctor for injecting epinephrine and other emergency measures, follow it.

I only applied ice pack on the wound (hehe), and after some few agonizing seconds, the pain starts to go down. But I can't be at the safe side yet. I have to be vigilant because a rapid allergy reaction may take place. I hope not.

The province of Iloilo in Western Visayas has always been a part of Philippine history, one way or another. The Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legaspi even moved his headquarters from Cebu to Oton, Iloilo. Thus as the leading province during this period Iloilo is widely known for its old-world architecture especially the grand Spanish colonial churches, which can be seen in almost all towns of the province.

MIAG-AO CHURCH

The Church of Sto. Tomas de Villanueva was built in 1797 and is one of the four baroque churches in the Philippines to be declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church served as a fortress against Muslim raiders, thus the church is also known as the Miag-ao Fortress Church. It has been damaged both by man and nature twice, and the church was restored in 1962.

The church is made from yellowish limestones, and it is known for the intricate design of its facade and the pyramidal bell towers.

While an integral part of the Philippine landscape, the coconut tree is also the subject of lore. According to an old Philippine legend, the coconut tree was the only bequest from a loving mother to her two children, a tree which sustained them for life. TIGBAUAN CHURCH

St. John Sahagun Church of Tibauan, Iloilo is also constructed by forced labor in 1867 using reddish coral limestone. Its facade is unique because of its Spanish churrigueresque design.

It is a design named after a Catalan sculptor which is rare, thus making Tigbauan church one of the few churches outside Spain and Latin America to have this design.

GUIMBAL CHURCH

The St. Nicholas of Tolentino Parish in Guimbal, Iloilo is one of the oldest church in the country, and it is the first structure that tourists and passersby will see as they are about to enter the town proper. It was constructed in 1773 through forced labor or polo.

Guimbal church is made from yellow adobe (igang) quarried within the town, and coral stones from Guimaras Island.

HOW TO save money while traveling

No this is not a post about budget travel, but on how to additionally save while traveling. I got this idea from two of my friends, which both involves the 5 and 10 peso coins.

A high school friend of mine once shared that the best way to save coins is by saving those with higher amount, the Php5 and Php10 coins. It will save more space in your piggy bank and it will give you higher yield. I decided to try her advise, but I keep on spending my coins and the peso and centavo coins are the ones usually left. An epic failure for me :).

Another friend reintroduced me in saving those 5 and 10-peso coins. I noticed that she always uses her bills for fares and when she buys something and does not spend her 5 and 10 coins. I also found out that she purposely exchanges some of her bills for those coins, so her savings of coins surely piles up.

Hmmmmm. I tried it because I was by this time serious in saving up, and I also noticed my purse would be sometimes filled up by these coins. And surely enough it works. Even if I only have 3 five-peso coins left behind at the end of the day, I will drop it in my piggy bank made from used 1-liter plastic water bottles, and at the end of the month I can't believe I have saved that amount! Which I could never do if I've decided to save up my paper money.

This may or may not work for you, but it surely worked for me. So whenever I travel I make sure to think of my savings and separate those five- and ten-peso coins. Motivation and willingness is surely one key to save this way. Who knows, maybe next time my coins will finance a trip to my own Paradise Falls without the help of balloons ~_^.

PHILIPPINE BEACHES!

Here are some of the beaches I've been to but unable to write about. Some are from pre-blogging days. Other places are ordinary ones that sometimes we forget to appreciate. And this just shows that however insignificant the place is, I'm just happy and proud to say that I've been there. Some of the pictures may have links to guide you about the place. Enjoy! From time to time I'll be adding new beaches worth mentioning ^_^.

SICOGON ISLAND

During 1970s to early 1980s, Sicogon Island which is part of the Gigantes group of islands was famous for its long stretch of white sand beach which was said seven kilometers longer than Boracay. The 70's film "Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa" (The Most Beautiful Animal in the World) starring Gloria Romero was filmed here.

What I loved about this place located in Carles, Northern Iloilo aside from the inviting blue waters and white sand beach, were the sandbar. This was my first time to appreciate this wonder. I could only imagine how ancient people from Borneo traveled here in our country using land bridges :)

GUISI BEACH AND LIGHTHOUSE

It was built by the Spanish government in 1894 -1896 as part of the Master Plan for the lighting of the Maritime Coasts of the Philippine Archipelago. Known as Faro de Punta Luzaran, the lighthouse served as a navigational aid to the fishermen and sailors cruising Panay Gulf.

This was already popular when we visited this piece of paradise in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, but I first heard about it five years before that. What can I say? Paradise with history is such a perfect combination. Imaginations may run wild ^_^. The only downside was transportation because, in my opinion, anywhere in Guimaras island it is a big problem.

Though not white sand, beaches along the the southern Iloilo coastlines (Oton, Tigbauan, Guimbal, Miag-ao, and San Joaquin) are haven for Iloilo summer outings. One beach we frequent is Shamrock Beach Resort in Guimbal and Reynaldo's in Tigbauan for their affordable and nice place. Recently a new resort, Bearland in Tigbauan has been attracting local visitors.

ANHAWAN BEACH

The old Anhawan beach in Oton, Iloilo was a popular high-end beach destination way back in the '80s as my mother told me. As I was growing up (in Iloilo) and whenever we go to the beach we would pass by the ruins of Anhawan and we can see their man-made lagoon near the hi-way (and I imagine how grandiose Anhawan at that time). The year 2009-2010 saw the revival of that grandiosity of the resort as the management renovated the area (the lagoon was not part of it anymore).

PADRE PIO OF PIETRELCINA CHAPEL

Padre Pio was a Capuchin Italian priest, has been canonized in 2002, and is famous for bearing the stigmata. The chapel has a strict dress code, and due to its solemnity even the lightest sound seemed amplified. The chapel houses relics of St. Pio, and testimonials of persons that has been touched miraculously by the saint. ST. JUDE THADDEUS CHURCH MALACANANG

St. Jude Thaddeus is the Catholic patron saint of lost causes and hopeless cases. The National Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus is one of the three parishes erected for the Chinese. Weekly novena, especially on Thursdays is popular among board examination reviewees. The church is open daily from 8am-12nn and 1:30pm-5pm. Although the church is accessible to all vehicles, security is tight at the entrance gate of Malacanang compound.

ARCHDIOCESAN SHRINE OF JESUS, SM MALL OF ASIA

This was not a part of our church visit in 2011, but I attended my cousin's wedding here last year 2012. According to the church's official website, The Archdiocesan Shrine of Jesus, The Way, The Truth, and The Life and Pope John Paul II Youth Center is a fulfillment of the late Pope John Paul II's dream. The Shrine was a project of the late Jaime L. Cardinal Sin, previous Archbishop of Manila, and the lot and church was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sy Sr. of the Shoemart Group of Companies (thus located beside Mall of Asia).

It is customary for those taking the board exams to pray for guidance, and last 2011 we did our church visit to ask our Lord to help us get that most coveted "passed" mark. Some of my pictures were lost, and I've added some links to help you out if you ever plan to go on a spiritual trip. Enjoy! BACLARAN CHURCH

The National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, also known as the Redemptorist Church, or commonly known as Baclaran Church is one of the largest Marian churches in the Philippines, and is open 24/7. It houses the image of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, one of the most venerated and celebrated Marian image. Baclaran Day happens every Wednesday, where a Perpetual Novena is offered for the Virgin Mary's miraculous aid and intercession. Click here for the mass schedule and to learn more about the church.

How to get there by MRT/LRT

From EDSA, go to Taft Avenue by MRT then proceed to LRT (maximum fare for both is Php 15) and get off at Baclaran station. From the station you'll be in the midst of the famous Baclaran market (beware of pick pocketeers), so just ask for the way to the church, which is just about 10 minutes away.

QUIAPO CHURCH

The Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, also known as Saint John the Baptist Church, and commonly called Quiapo Church is famous for enshrining the Black Nazarene (black-colored Jesus), where many devotees claim to have miraculous powers. Devotees also get to touch the Nazarene's feet at the back of the church. Personally, I have been touched by the Black Nazarene. It was the only church that made me cry every time I look at the image of Jesus at the altar, as though the Lord tells me that it's alright to unburden all my problems to Him.

How to get there by MRT/LRT

From EDSA, ride the MRT to Taft Station then transfer to LRT and get off at Carriedo Station. From there just like in Baclaran, you will be greeted by market stalls and you may ask around to point you in the direction of the church, which is about less than ten minutes away. OUR LADY OF MANAOAG

Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag is the patroness of Manaoag, Pangasinan. She is the patroness especially of the sick, the helpless, and the needy, and because of her miraculous powers she is not only popular in the Philippines but also in foreign lands. How to get to Manaoag, Pangasinan

We hired a van from Quezon City to bring us to Manaoag Church, which is recommended if you are in groups because the travel time is approximately four hours and we left around 4am.

REGINA ROSARII

We got to know the existence of the center of the Dominican Sisters of the Regina Rosarii through our friend whose aunt is one of the sisters. One of its feature is a giant Mary, Regina Rosarii statue atop their roofdeck in Quezon City, where a peaceful respite awaits. We were prayed over by Sr. Eppie herself.

With their mission the Regina Rosarii Institute for Contemplation in Asia (commonly known as Regina Rica) in Tanay, Rizal has been established. The place features the 71-feet tall image of Regina Rosarii, and a place best for devotion and contemplation.
