A Norwegian nonet that rocks 35 instruments onstage and smashes Afrobeat, prog, film music, cheesy fanfares and Steve Reich arpeggios together against a backdrop of gigantic slot machine fruit? The odds of that happening are "No friggin way!" But as it turns out, one such nonet does exist.

What's even more shocking is that Jaga Jazzist (pronounced "yaga yazzist") has made this demented formula supremely successful.

Over its 17-year career, Jaga Jazzist has garnered international and critical acclaim, played countless rock, jazz and electronic music festivals, and received praise from music luminaries, including The Mars Volta and Flying Lotus.

The group's first album, A Livingroom Hush (Warner Music Norway, 2001), was named the best jazz album of 2002 on BBC.com. Yet, how is it that so few Americans know about them?

During its lengthy existence, Jaga has only played six shows in the U.S., and its upcoming North American tour that begins on June 21, is only its second in the States.

Wily mastermind and principal composer Lars Horntveth, 31, says Jaga has remained largely unknown in the U.S. because of the band's "no bullshit" and "maximalistic" modus operandi.

"What Jaga represents is a complex, melodic and no bullshit attitude, not being as commercial as so many other people are," he says. "I guess we represent some kind of alternative scene in Norway. It's an attitude of not making things simple or selling out."

The term "maximalistic" is Horntveth's personal antonym for "minimalist." It refers to his goal of making each Jaga song as complex and energetic as possible, yet still euphonious.

Manically shifting among as many as five time signatures in one song, the band's members often seem to want to challenge the listener as much as their own technical skills.

Other times the nine instrumentalists offer an unusual orchestral experience via stunning crescendos played from their rock/jazz/electronic/progressive perspective.

In "Toccata" from the band's 2010 album, One-Armed Bandit (Ninja Tune), they accomplish this with trumpet, tuba, trombone, double-bass, lap steel, Fender Rhodes, church organ, drums and vibraphone.

With its non-mainstream music, the ensemble simply hasn't had the funds to tour extensively and build a massive following in the States. Jaga, as its members like to say, is largely a nonprofit group that creates art for art's sake.

Finances have been so slim in the past that band members have had to maintain other jobs in the health care industry, or as album producers and band members for other well-known Norwegian groups such as Turbonegro and Motorpsycho.

Nevertheless, the nonet has powered through 17 years, about 30 band members, six albums and three EPs for two main reasons—friendship and passion for music. Six members have been with the band since the beginning. In the mid-'90s, they all grew up as teenage friends in the quiet, Oslo suburb of Tonsberg.

Its core members have been Horntveth, who founded the group at age 14, his older brother Martin and older sister Line. The age range of the band is now 29 to 35.

Over the years, Horntveth never received formal musical training, but several other members are trained jazz musicians. Still, as a self-taught musician, Horntveth has produced numerous albums for other top Norwegian acts and composed music for theater, film and radio.

As a film composer, Horntveth cites Bernard Herrmann's dizzying theme song for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958) as a major influence. That largely explains the often dramatic, supremely restless quality of Jaga compositions. We can imagine a superhero flying across the ends of the earth to save mankind from a nefarious villain or an Aston Martin speeding down a highway in some spy flick.

His film composing experience came in handy for One-Armed Bandit, as he painstakingly scored music for every instrument on each track. With all that sheet music, the album took an entire year to complete. This was just another example of the band's "maximalistic" approach, the most intriguing aspect of which is perhaps Horntveth's more idiosyncratic method of songwriting.

Like the sixteen discs which Sony have already reissued, pianist and composer Randy Weston's Blue Moses has not previously been released on CD in the US or Europe (though there was a 2006 Japanese issue). On paper, the fusion of his back to the roots, Maghrebi-drenched aesthetic and Taylor's svelte Manhattan sophistication—here delivered by a twenty-piece, brass-heavy ensemble—might look like a non-starter. In the event, Taylor and Weston pulled it off. Opposites do, sometimes, attract.

By 1972, Weston's approach had evolved from the hard bop style, much influenced by fellow pianist Thelonious Monk, that he had played when he began recording eighteen years earlier. His palette had broadened as it grew to reflect his fascination with African music, and by the late 1960s he had found his own, Africanized voice. (Traces of Monk have, however, continued to be heard in his music. "He was the most original I ever heard," says Weston. "He played like they must have played in Egypt five thousand years ago").

Weston learnt about African music first hand. In the mid-1960s—supported by publishing royalties from widely covered compositions such as "Hi-Fly" and "Saucer Eyes"—he left the US and traveled extensively in north and west Africa. In 1968, he settled in Rabat, Morocco, where he ran a nightclub for four years. Blue Moses was made at Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio, at the end of the Rabat sojourn. By this time Weston had acquired deep knowledge of Maghrebi styles, and in particular Moroccan gnawa—a percussive trance and ritual music originated by black African musicians from the far south of the country.

Personnel: Randy Weston: piano, electric piano; Freddie Hubbard: trumpet; Grover Washington Jr.: tenor saxophone; Hubert Laws: flute, alto flute, bass flute, electric flute, piccolo; Romeo Penque: oboe, English horn, clarinet, flute, alto flute, bass flute; George Marge: English horn, clarinet, flute, alto flute, bass flute; David Horowitz: Moog; Ron Carter: bass (1, 2, 4); Bill Wood: bass (3); Bill Cobham: drums; Phil Kraus: percussion; Airto Moreira: percussion; Azzedin Weston: percussion; John Frosk: trumpet, flugelhorn; Alan Rubin: trumpet, flugelhorn; Marvin Stamm: trumpet, flugelhorn; James Buffington: French horn; Brooks Tillotson: French horn; Wayne Andre: trombone, baritone horn; Garnett Brown: trombone; Warren Covington: trombone; Paul Faulise: bass trombone; Madame Meddah: vocals.

There's a lot of that going on in New York City and Escreet is elbow deep in it. He's very keen on forging his own voice, on his instrument and compositionally.

"The real goal is to basically create your own genre, without wanting to sound too pretentious or anything. Really, all my favorite musicians are successful at that," Escreet says. "Even though people may not view it like that, but it's technically what you're doing. If you aren't as strong as that you really kind of failed. Because if somebody wants your sound or wants you on a gig or recording, and you're the only one that can come close to achieving that sound, then the person in question only has the option to hire you.

Source: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=40093

Bill Evans pioneered a trio approach that favored more equality in instrumental input. In his late 1950s and early 1960s trio, it was bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian joining the pianist. La Faro's death in a car crash shortly after the recording of the two live albums resulted in a "what might have been" lament, but Evans forged on, releasing always good and sometimes great albums over the years with several different trios that never, in the minds of many, achieved the level of creativity and innovation of the Evans/La Faro/Motian team.

This perception may be, in part, true; once that innovative leap was made, nothing afterward seemed so daringly fresh. But building on the initial evolutionary leap, the best of Evans' later work sparkled with breathtaking beauty and unsurpassed harmonic depth melded to his exquisitely crisp, crystalline touch and adept feel for melodies perfectly suited to his style.

The bassist and composer had one of the most wide-ranging careers of anyone in jazz, and no album resembles any of the others. While this may be frustrating for someone looking for another recording just like, for instance, Mingus Ah Um (Columbia, 1959), Mingus' eccentricities ensure that every album has a few surprises. This compilation offers up four Mingus albums that showcase the variety of styles Mingus employed throughout his career. One is an acknowledged classic, the others are lesser-known gems.

<img height="240" the feel of a car going too fast, always in danger of running off the road. It's basically a less polished version of the classic Mingus Ah Um and as you can gather from the song titles, Mingus is drawing heavily from two of his big inspirations: the blues and the church. Complete with moans and shout outs from the bassist, the band tears through six numbers with fierce passion, to a more than holy rolling effect. And what a band it is: alto and tenor saxophonists Jackie McLean, John Handy and Booker Ervin in the front line with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams and trombonists Jimmy Knepper and Willie Daniels providing depth to the bottom end. The rhythm section of pianist Horace Parlan (or Mal Waldron) and perennial Mingus sideman, bassist Dannie Richmond, fan the flames from the back. Mingus is at his most energetic here, leading a band that was fully in line with what he was up to. It's hard to imagine a Mingus outfit that ever sounded better.

Mingus Three/Trio (Blue Note) is a 1957 trio recording with pianist Hampton Hawes and Richmond and is surprising in how conventional it is. If you were going to put Mingus in a trio setting, it seems likely you would pick a more idiosyncratic player to hold down the piano bench (like Jackie Byard or even Carl Perkins, if you had to stick with the West Coast). However, Hawes it is, and it's about as good of a trio session as you could ask for. Hawes is a fine pianist and this is more his record than anybody's, as the group works through a series of standards that never threaten to get too abstract. There's plenty of interplay to go around, with Mingus getting a steady helping of solos, showcasing how splendid an accompanist he is.

Jazz Portraits (Blue Note) is one of the neglected classics in the Mingus canon. It's a live date from 1959 featuring a stellar front line of McLean, Ervin and Handy stretching out on four tunes. "No Private Income Blues" is one of Mingus' catchiest recordings while "Alice's Wonderland" is one of his prettiest melodies. Mingus gets plenty of solo room here as well, and as much recognition as he gets as a composer, it's easy to forget what a mighty good bassist he was. You'll hear why here. Richard Wyands was a last minute substitute for Parlan at the piano and does little other than comp in the background, perhaps intimidated by the company.

And it's back to 1954 for Jazzical Moods, the kind of high concept recording that is heavier on composition than improvisation (the presence of the cello is a pretty good indication that we're deep in the land of high art.) Even the liner notes state that this is not music to be grasped in one listen. Very few can pull off an album of this kind without seeming pretentious (or creating a series of songs no one will listen to more than once.) However, Jazzical Moods is pretty good, helped no doubt by an unusual, yet proficient cast. This is the sort of intellectual project John LaPorta would jump at the chance to be involved in, and Teo Macero is also along playing tenor alongside Thad Jones' trumpet. So we get some unusual orchestrations of two standards ("What Is This Thing Called Love" and a wonderfully weird "Story Weather") and "Minor Intrusion," a blues without the usual chord pattern, and the eerie "Abstractions." "Thrice Upon A Theme" is pulled in from the second volume of the collection to fill up the remaining space.

This double CD is a fine collection of one or two albums that many people have probably already heard along with a couple that most probably haven't. Mingus was always heading off into many different directions; here are four of the more interesting ones he pursued.

Primarily co-written and performed with multi-instrumentalist Samy Bishai along with pianist Zoe Rahman, a chamber orchestra and 20-piece Turkish ensemble, Mounqaliba is most likely the clearest representation of Atlas' ambitious vision so far. "What I hope I have achieved is to match the lyricism of classical music with the inherent poetry of Arabic," she says, "through the juxtaposition of western classical string sections with traditional Arabic instruments, classical Arabic poetry against abstract impressionism, traditional Arabic percussion with smoky jazz kits..."

The strings, percussion and other instrumentation—especially Rahman's unaccompanied and gorgeous "Bada Al Fajr" solo—prove quite complementary and evocative, but Atlas' voice dominates their colorful landscape with a sound that's simply magic and is both timeless and modern. Her voice curtsies to, then dances with, the twirling strings of the Arabic traditional "Muwashah Ozkourini," to call the instrumentation together beneath its wings, then swims in Arabic harmonic and melodic pools more than four centuries deep. Atlas directly juxtaposes this Arabic traditional against her hypnotic treatment of Nick Drake's somber elegy "Riverman."

"Riverman" flows into another pool of churning modern and ancient streams: "Batkallim," a swirling undertow of hip-hop and traditional Arabic rhythm that sputters and loops back into itself, rising and falling beneath her singing as she surfs its surface, then speared through by Rahman's thunderous piano and convulsing to full stop. Her piano introduction to the title track emerges as the ghost of these closing chords, a regal fluted melody ornamented by layers of strings and vocals that float down within the arrangement. "Mounqaliba" beautifully realizes Atlas' ambition of harmonizing the frameworks of Arabic and European classical music.

The group features Jack Wyllie on saxophones and electronics, Milo Fitzpatrick on double bass, Duncan Bellamy on drums and piano, and Nick Mulvey on percussion and hang drums. The hang -- a steel drum from Switzerland shaped like a UFO -- induces the state of elation. The London group tries to harness what it describes as "world music from the future," a contemporary sound that cannot be easily traced to a specific genre or discipline. Isla features tunes that slowly build in atmosphere and drama: "Line" begins with a sparse rhythmic pattern and progressively layers in complexity. --SR

Witness Juan-Carlos Formell and Johnny's Dream Club, a group that's bred a different strain of Afro-Cuban jazz. Loud, rambunctious dance music this is not: It centers on Formell's acoustic guitar and wistful, almost spoken singing. His tunes feel like a sort of original folk music, seemingly tossed off with casual mastery, but they wouldn't be what they are without studied jazz improvisers, some of whom are from Formell's native Cuba. The net result is seemingly meant to evoke a hazy dream, an imagined memory of a Havana long ago -- the key word is "imagined," but it's no less arresting for it. --PJ

This is the approach of Maurice Brown, a trumpeter bred in Chicago, who lived in New Orleans and found sanctuary -- after Hurricaine Katrina -- in the city of New York. His band, the Maurice Brown Effect, signifies his musical journey across America, picking up saxophonist Derek Douget in the Big Easy and pianist Chris Rob in the Windy City along the way. On his latest album, Home, Goldberg's band turns melodic and balladic when it wants to, or suggests Latin grooves, or becomes a hyperkinetic post-bebop hydra. The take on "I Mean You," by Thelonious Monk, shows off the latter nicely. --Patrick Jarenwattananon

Where he does play, he plays well, reprising 'Ode to a Kudu' from Beyond The Blue Horizon, for example, and tossing in a quote from the Gershwins' 'I Got Rhythm' during the title cut. The liner notes imply that the live tapes, recorded over two nights at the Roxy, were later enhanced in the studio.
Recorded live at the Roxy, Hollywood, California on September 30 and October 1-2, 1977.
Born in India, raised in the U.S. and Japan, and now residing in New York, Gupta sews together sounds from all over the world. He plays a half-standard drum set with half tabla percussion, weaving in swing with Indian raga. His heritage is clearly apparent on his second release, Namaskar, which means "give respect" in Sanskrit. The album pays homage to the Golden Era of Bollywood: "Salaam" is featured in the 1980 classic filmDostana. Like his music, his band is a mix -- a blend of American and Indian musicians. In this track, jazz pianist Marc Cary gives an inspired performance on Fender Rhodes. --Simon Rentner, WBGO
Listen:
I'm goin' home
Down there among the fields of cotton,
Down where the folks have not forgotten me
I feel blue just for a little girl I'm strong for,

Just for a certain one I long to see.
I'm goin' down aroun' my ALABAMY HOME
I'm gonna see the bee that makes the honey comb
The brindle cow will wag her tail,
As I fill up the pail I'll chase the flies and
I surmise she'll moo, "Thanks to you."
I'll feed the chicks, and mix some barley with their corn
They love it so, I know they'll cluck for luck each morn
Then I will lie amid the hay
And call it all a day
Way down aroun' my ALABAMY HOME.

By: Jessica Moorhill

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the same goes with what musicians consider as the best trumpet.

In this case, the beauty of a trumpet depends on the ears of the beholder and the audience. The best

trumpet for a musician can be considered a matter of perspective. For some musicians, the best trumpet could be made of brass; the best can be colored black, gold or silver; some musicians consider piston valve trumpets to be the best as opposed to rotary valves.

Musicians also consider a particular brand of trumpet to be the best and wouldn't play anything else. The best trumpet can also be determined by general point of view and not just the whim of the

musician. The Bb trumpet is the best trumpet for students who want to learn playing trumpets. Gold or silver colored trumpets are best used for special occasions and C trumpets are the best trumpet for orchestral performances.

Depending on where a trumpet will be used and what it will be used for, the best trumpet is determined by trumpet type:

. Bb trumpet - is the best trumpet for amateur trumpet players or for players who want to start learning to play the trumpet. This type of trumpet is considered as a student trumpet. It allows beginners to learn higher key instruments without having to learn new fingering techniques

because it teaches amateur players the technique of transposition.

. C trumpet - is the best trumpet to use when playing in orchestras. The C trumpet is so named because it normally plays the key of C which is commonly played in orchestra music.

. Piccolo trumpet - with its four valves is the best trumpet for tight musical performances especially Baroque music. The four valves make it easier for players to lower the pitch by a fourth.

. Pocket trumpet - is the best trumpet for kids who want to learn trumpet music. It is a smaller form of bb trumpet which makes it ideal for teaching. It has a reduced form factor, a reduced bell and its tube has been wound more tightly to maintain tube length.

On a professional level, musicians prefer their own selected brands of trumpet. Musicians hail certain brands as their best trumpet.

. King trumpet - is one of the best trumpet brands available. They are finely crafted, and have rich

sound because of their silver bells. These trumpets are strictly dedicated to professional musicians

or to anyone who appreciates rich sounding music. The best trumpet for old style jazz bands is the

King Cornet. Like the King trumpet, its fine craftsmanship makes it the ideal partner for lifetime jazz musicians.

. Monette Trumpet - is considered by many musicians to be the best trumpet in terms of

manufacturing quality and sound. Unique among Monette trumpets are their specially made

mouthpieces. They allow the musician to play naturally and not strain themselves when producing

high notes. Monette trumpets are constructed in a balanced way so that musicians need not move

around so much to produce higher notes to make great music.

. Yamaha trumpet - When it comes to musical instruments, Yamaha is synonymous to technology and quality. Many musicians consider Yamaha trumpets as the best trumpet because of quality construction and high-tech manufacturing techniques that produce brilliant sounds not just in their trumpet line but other brass wind instruments as well.

. Bach Stradivarius trumpet - is an exquisite finely crafted line of trumpet from the company of master craftsman Vincent Bach, Bach Brass. It's the best trumpet for those who favor classical music as well as classical-looking instruments.

Tickets are $27.50, $32.50 and $37.50 and are on sale now at the Weinberg Center box office, by phone at 301-600-2828, or online at

www.weinbergcenter.org

It is virtually impossible to determine what came first: Maceo Parker or the funk. From James Brown to the Mothership’s George Clinton to Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Maceo has played with each and every leader of funk. Maceo began his solo career in 1991 and now, almost two decades later, is enjoying blistering success and has built a new funk empire that is fresh and stylistically diverse.

Legendary soul master James Brown lives again through the music of Maceo. Maceo sings with a James Brown-like perfection and his style has been called a synthesis of Brown’s 1960’s soul and George Clinton’s 1970’s freaky funk with a hint of mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop. The result is something of a wildly jazzy, impossibly funky jam.

Maceo fell in love with the saxophone at an early age and his love for it has only grown. Maceo grew up admiring saxophonists such as David “Fathead” Newman, Hank Crawford, Cannonball Adderley and King Curtis. By the time Maceo was 15, he had forged his own style on the tenor sax. It was the birth of the “Maceo sound” that is so well known and loved.

Maceo’s signature style helped further define James Brown’s brand of funk and the phrase, “Maceo, I want you to blow” passed into the language. Maceo's albums Funk Overload, Dial M-A-C-E-O and Made by Maceo entered the top 40 in the European charts upon release. Maceo’s third solo album, Life on Planet Groove, in 1992, boosted Maceo’s contemporary career as a solo artist and brought him his catch phrase, “2% Jazz, 98% Funky Stuff”.

High energy, groovy and emotionally powerful, Maceo is recognized as one of the early pioneers of the modern funk and hip-hop scene. So be sure not to miss this fun, funky performance and join us for a truly transcendent experience.

From music to medical school and back to music, Helmerson is a well rounded artist who let his creativity take him to new heights which ultimately resulted in him creating his own genre of music which he dubs Progressive Fusion; a combination of long songs with virtuosos performed in complicated time signatures, elaborate melodies and harmonies that are built on pentatonic scales that are neither major nor minor. This musical mastermind fuses jazz and rock to create a sound that amazes listeners with the power of superior technique and great composing. His success was far from overnight, however.

Born in Sweden in 1959, Helmerson studied classical music in Sweden and Denmark while playing in various short-lived bands in the 1970s. He recalls a time, while studying in Stockholm he recorded a few electronic music with two friends of which some of his teachers wanted to hear, "they insisted on hearing it, so I played it for them, once I turned the tape recorder off, they stared at me. They said absolutely nothing. A couple of days later I was dismissed from school."

Helmerson took a steady self-imposed exile from music and composing altogether in 1981, after a failed attempt with "The End of Illusion," his debut album. He went on to attend medical school in Sweden, then worked as a surgeon in Copenhagen and finally as a cruise ship doctor to realize that his true passion lay, with music.

Through his travels, Helmerson would make his new home in Rio de Janeiro, and it is here that he revitalized his love for music. The array of Brazilian music coupled with the backing from one of Brazil's premier progressive labels, "Som Interior Productions," Helmerson, recorded the album, "Fields of Inertia," of which he described as "having the classical influences with a blend of techno." Fast forward eight years later and Helmerson is proud to release his five track album, "Triple Ripple," which he was able to masterfully compose by drawing on his love for synthesizers and progressive music. With Bryan Beller on bass and Marco Minnemann on drums, this jazz rock fusion is a tour de force that truly radiates with his progressive fusion genre.

Anders Helmerson's music seems to change with the time and thus he cannot be packaged in a box. His sound is unique and his creativity is limitless as evidenced with his creation of progressive fusion. With his relentless energy and steady fusion of synthesizers, anyone with an appreciation of testing and pushing the limits is sure to enjoy his inimitable style. When asked his opinion of Triple Ripple, he eloquently stated, "1,876 bars measured to perfection. Making of Triple Ripple is done. It was a real journey." With his talent and ability to invent new genres and the luck that makes turns a musical flop into a cult-like success, Anders Helmerson's journey is almost certainly just beginning.

http://www.endofillusion.com/

January 20—Jorge Drexler Meets Berklee

Oscar-winning singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler matches a world music sensibility with the rhythms of his native Uruguay. Artists such as Mercedes Sosa, Shakira, Omara Portuondo, Maria Rita, Ana Belén, Victor Manuel, and Zélia Duncan have recorded on his songs. Drexler released his first album, La Luz Que Sabe Robar in 1992, the same year he earned a doctorate from the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. His albums have received a combined total of seven Grammy and Latin Grammy award nominations, and he's won two Spanish Music Prizes. Drexler became the first Uruguayan to win an Academy Award with Best Original Song "Al Otro Lado del Río," from the internationally acclaimed film The Motorcycle Diaries. Drexler's recent work includes the soundtrack for James Ivory's film The City of Your Final Destination. Jorge Drexler Meets Berklee is produced by Bass Department professor Oscar Stagnaro and arranged and conducted by Contemporary Writing and Production chair Matt Nicholl.

February 3—Songs of Richard Smallwood

Six-time Grammy Award–winner and Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee Richard Smallwood will perform with Berklee's gospel choir, led by associate professor Dennis Montgomery III. Combining a talent for gospel with a love for r&b, pop, soul, and classical, Smallwood creates music that reflects his varied background as a classical pianist and gospel aficionado. After graduating ***** laude from Howard University, the pianist, singer, music director, composer, and arranger released his first album, Richard Smallwood Singers (1982), which spent 87 weeks on Billboard's Gospel chart. Smallwood won his first Grammy for his production on the Quincy Jones's gospel project Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration. Smallwood's music has been recorded by major artists including Destiny's Child, Yolanda Adams, and Karen Clark-Sheard. The concert is part of Berklee's Warrick L. Carter Lecture Series and will honor Smallwood for his contributions to gospel music. Dr. Teresa Hairston, publisher of Gospel Today and gospel archive donor to Berklee, will be the guest emcee. The concert is produced by Africana Studies students and faculty, led by Bill Banfield, director of Africana Studies.

February 27—Great American Songbook: The Sounds of Nashville

Berklee students and faculty will tell the story of the Nashville music scene through the songs of acclaimed American country artists like Jimmie Rodgers, Charley Pride, Hank Williams, Ray Charles, Patsy Cline, Reba McEntire, LeAnn Rimes, Alan Jackson, and more. A full rhythm section with a string orchestra, woodwinds, and horns will accompany student and faculty vocalists. Great American Songbook: The Sounds of Nashville is produced by Berklee professor Ken Zambello.

Mattea, a repeat Country Music Association Award winner, has recorded 17 albums and has charted more than 30 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks charts. In 1986, Mattea released her breakthrough hit, a cover of Nanci Griffith's "Love at the Five and Dime" off her heavily folk-influenced album Walk the Way the Wind Blows. The same album yielded three other top-ten songs, and Mattea went on to release a myriad of other acclaimed singles and albums. Mattea's music has been covered by artists including Kenny Rogers, Wynonna Judd, and Reba McEntire. In late 1988, Mattea's "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" became the first single by a solo female to spend multiple weeks at number one on the Billboard Country Singles chart since Dolly Parton's 1979 "You're the Only One." Kathy Mattea Meets Berklee is produced by Music Production and Engineering Department professor Stephen Webber, who co-hosts an annual student spring break trip to Nashville.

It was his first jazz & poetry album, and a remarkable meeting between two great poets. The sessions feature a collaboration between Baker and renown Norwegian poet Jan Erik Vold, and includes guitar legend Philip Catherine. The initiative came from Jan Erik Vold, who’s been working with leading jazz musicians since the late sixties, reading his poetry along with Jan Garbarek’s early groups, and later with pianist Egil Kapstad, bringing in Swedish tenorists like Nisse Sandstöm and Bernt Rosengren, as well as Americans like bass player Red Mitchell and guitarist Doug Raney. Chesney

Henry "Chet" Baker, Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter, flugelhorn player and singer. Baker established a large following, based in part on his matinee idol beauty, emotionally remote performances, and well publicized drug habit. He died in 1988 after falling from a second-story window of a hotel in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Baker's earliest notable professional gigs were with saxophonist Vido Musso's band, and also with tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, though he earned much more notoriety in 1951 when he performed a series of West Coast engagements with Charlie Parker. In 1952, Baker joined the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, who's version of "My Funny Valentine", featuring a memorable Baker solo, was a major hit, and became a song with which Baker was closely associated. The Quartet lasted less than a year because of Mulligan's arrest and imprisonment on drug charges. In 1953, Pacific Jazz released Chet Baker Sings, a record that increased his profile but alienated traditional jazz fans; he would continue to sing throughout his career. Baker formed quartets with Russ Freeman in 1953-54 with bassists Carson Smith, Joe Mondragon, and Jimmy Bond and drummers Shelly Mann, Larry Bunker, and Bob Neel. In 1954 Chet Baker won the Downbeat Jazz Poll. Because of his chiseled features, Hollywood studios approached Baker and he made his acting debut in the film Hell's Horizon, released in the fall of 1955. He declined an offer of a studio contract, preferring life on the road as a musician. Over the next few years, Baker fronted his own combos, including a 1955 quintet featuring Francy Boland, where Baker combined playing trumpet and singing. Baker's 1956 recording, released for the first time in its entirety in 1989 as The Route, with Art Pepper helped further the West Coast jazz sound and became a staple of cool jazz. Baker continued to record and perform throughout the '60s, '70s and 1980s. He died in 1988 after falling from a second-story window of a hotel in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

JAN ERIK VOLD, born 1939 in Oslo, is a prominent Norwegian writer, having published 20 books of poetry, as well as numerous publications of literary essays, biographies and editorial works. In his youth he was a jazz journalist. He translated the American poets William Carlos Williams and Wallace Stevens, Robert Creeley and Frank O’Hara, Richard Brautigan and Bob Dylan. His own poetry has been widely translated, also into English. Twelve Meditations (2004) is out in a bilingual edition at Gyldendal’s, Oslo. For his literary achievements he received an Honorary Doctorate at the University of Oslo 2000. As a jazz & poetry performer, Jan Erik Vold has been constantly active for more than forty years, since his first album Briskeby Blues was produced. With Jan Garbarek he made three albums 1969--1977, and with Egil Kapstad eight albums 1986--2008. Love, Rain (1974) is a radio play based on the poetry of Robert Creeley. Rainy Day Women (1977) is a translation of 70 Bob Dylan songs, which resulted in the Dylan song album Stones. Rains (1981), in cooperation with blues guitarist Kåre Virud. The Day Lady Died (1986) is an album featuring the poems of Frank O’Hara. Storytellers (1998) brings international poetry by Rimbaud, D. H. Lawrence, Paul Celan, Ekelöf, Szymborska. Enclosed is Jan Erik Vold's liner notes on Chet Baker.

”Chet Baker was a character all of his own,” recalled Jan Erik Vold. ”You could see it from the very moment he entered the stage, trumpet in hand, sat down on a wooden chair, closed his eyes, and started playing. His horn close to the microphone, his back slightly curved, left knee resting on the right – beating time with his sneaker. If his eyes weren't closed, they were fixed on a point deep inside of him – or far beyond us – on the horizon towards which all his music seemed to stretch. It was beautiful music, intensely so – and at the same time intimate, confidential, a warm voice speaking to us. We believed in it. It told us that life is a dark journey, and beautiful music is the light along the way. And that everything enduringly beautiful has its price.”

The original title of the album was BLÅMANN! BLÅMANN!, which refers to a beloved Norwegian folk tune about a young boy’s search for his blue-shagged goat (blåmann=blue body), lost in the hills of Telemark. In Norway, this has been a best-selling album for more that twenty years. The English version of the poems, translated by the poet, was read and edited 2009 in Rainbow Studio, Oslo.

CHET BAKER was very happy about the recording sessions in Paris. He wrote to producer Jon Larsen: "Had a great a time, thank’s so much". To the Norwegian poet: "We must do this again soon". Of the possibility of translating the poems: Of course, that would give you a much larger audience". “The recording sessions went easy,” related Jan Erik Vold, “unbelievably easy. Any tension about the musicians getting to the studio, whether their mood would be right, the personal chemistry – then it turned out it was the Norwegian trio who arrived at Studio Sysmo far too late, after a long wait for a taxi big enough to hold a double bass with its huge plastic case! Randi Hultin and Jon Larsen had been sitting with Chet Baker and Philip Catherine at the cafe across the street for an hour, drinking coffee and enjoying themselves.”

TELEMARK BLUE is Jan Erik Vold's first international CD release.
