You didn't need to watch the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night to know exactly what was going down, with far better and more colorful commentary and variety than the program itself had to offer. With a hobbled Jessie J leading the house band through various covers going into and out of the endless stream of commercials (seriously, I'm never eating Taco Bell again), the show was certainly a skippable mess in which MTV pretended to care about music again for one night. What wasn't skippable, however, was the Twitter conversations that took place in real time as the events unfolded.

It's 2011, the age of the real-time worldwide experience, yet MTV still thinks it makes any sense whatsoever to throw a three-hour delay on the West coast feed. Hell, thanks to Twitter half the world knew before the show even aired that Katy Perry would take Video Of The Year for "Firework," that her & Kanye West would win Best Collaboration for their "E.T." jam, and that Foo Fighters were on the winner's list for Best Rock Video for their new single "Walk". We didn't need to wait for the awkward intro by Britney Spears to find out that Lady Gaga would win Best Video With a Message and Best Female Video for "Born This Way".

Oh, and the fact that Lady Gaga dressed as a man as she posed as "Joe Calderone" for a strange monologue intro? Bizarre. She never once broke character the entire evening. The commentary had us all in stitches, with claims she was impersonating actor Adam Goldberg doing a Marisa Tomei impersonation, among other colorful interpretations.

Although losing Video of the Year to Katy, Adele came away a big winner with a total of four awards: Best Art Direction, Editing, Cinematography, and Direction, for her "Rolling in the Deep" video. She also sang "Someone Like You," and it was four minutes of sonic ambien.

Beyonce's pregnant, revealing what appears to be about a 4-month baby bump as she strutted her stuff to a fantastic 80s-styled neo-soul blast of "Love on Top" that marked the talent high point of the night. At the end of her set, she popped opened the jacket to her sequined-blazer-and-tuxedo-shirt combo, caressing her belly with a smile. The cameras cut to Jay-Z, who was beaming with pride as Kanye excitedly laughed alongside him - with Gaga acting manly next to Tony Bennett in the background.

Another significant moment came during Jay-Z & Kanye West's "surprise" collaborative performance of the Watch The Throne track "Otis," complete with pyrotechnics and a massive American flag. Just the way the two men orbited one another onstage made it difficult not to want to go buy tickets to The Throne tour immediately.

After a passionless tribute to Amy Winehouse, crooner Bruno Mars knocked out a fantastic rendition of the late songstress' track "Valerie," complete with four-part backup harmonies. Tremendous stuff. It was the opposite of the tribute itself, which after a strange introduction by Russell Brand and a disconnected sentiment from Tony Bennett, showed that the gravity of Winehouse's limited but tremendous accomplishment just doesn't pull strongly enough to earn more than a cursory reflection.

Katy Perry remains atop the Billboard Hot 100 for a second week with "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," her historic fifth No. 1 from her album "Teenage Dream," while Lil Wayne leaps onto the survey at No. 3 with the latest single from his forthcoming album "Tha Carter IV."

Exclusive: Katy Perry Responds to Making Hot 100 History

"Friday" registers a second week at the Hot 100's apex despite dips in airplay and sales. The song slips 1-2 on Radio Songs with 140 million all-format audience impressions (down 6%), according to Nielsen BDS. It holds at No. 4 on Digital Songs with 154,000 downloads sold (down 1%), according to Nielsen SoundScan.

With the song's ascension to No. 1 last week, Perry became the first woman, and second artist overall, following Michael Jackson ("Bad," 1987-88), in the Hot 100's 53-year history to send five songs from an album to the top spot.

Like summer's end, MTV's 2011 Video Music Awards are fast approaching. If the show's 26-year legacy is any indication, we're in for superstar collabs and elaborate sets come Sunday (Aug. 28). To celebrate the annual MTV spectacular, we asked Billboard.com readers to pick the best performances in VMA history -- and not surprisingly, pop megastars including Michael Jackson,Madonna, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga came out on top of the tally. Read on to find out where they ranked, and relive all the showstopping performances.

10. Rihanna, 2008

"Disturbia"/"Seven Nation Army"

Subtly sampling the beat from the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" with her own haunting pop, Rihanna kicked off the 2008 VMAs with "Disturbia." Naturally, an onslaught of "Thriller"-esque dance-zombies and Ri-Ri performing from within a metal float rounded out the eerie gig.

9. Eminem, 2000

"The Real Slim Shady"/"The Way I Am"

Performing amidst a sea of Eminem lookalikes, Marshall Mathers made his point loud and clear at the 2000 VMAs: He is and will always be the Real Slim Shady. In an image etched into our minds, Em led his the imitators through Radio City, later busting right into "The Way I Am."

8. Taylor Swift, 2009

"You Belong With Me"

Country gal Taylor Swift got a taste of the big city life at the 2009 VMAs, performing "You Belong With Me" on the uptown F train before emerging from the subway and climbing on top of a taxi. Swift was riding high from the innovative performance, until Kanye West proceeded to bring her down a peg later that night with his "I'm gonna let you finish..." rant.

7. Beyoncé, 2009

"Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)"

The world gave a collective "whoa" when Beyonce unleashed her "Single Ladies" video, but to see those dance moves come to life at the 2009 VMAs was beyond eye-popping. It started small -- with just Bey alone on stage -- but soon enough she's joined by her two faithful back-up dancers, and finally, an army of lookalikes (a trick she's pulled in the past).

6. Madonna, 1990

"Vogue"

Talk about a cultural mashup: Madonna and co., clad in 18th century Marie Antoinette garb, taught the world how to Vogue, a performance style popularized in underground gay dance clubs of the '80s. Cue in one incredibly animated pants-less dancer, and VMA magic is made.

5. Bon Jovi, 1989

"Livin' On A Prayer"/"Wanted Dead or Alive"

In a performance largely credited with inspiring MTV's massively popular "Unplugged" series, Bon Jovi brought its hair pop-metal down to earth for some acoustic jams. Jon snapped and strummed along with Richie Sambora's double guitar, as the two brought down the house with the band's biggest hits, portrayed this time in a more modest light.

4. Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera; 2003

"Like A Virgin"/"Hollywood"

The Madonna-Britney kiss! Could we talk about anything else the day after the 2003 VMAs? And poor Christina, the camera cutting away as her and Madge lip-locked. The memorable medley kicked off with Britney andChristina Aguilera paying homage to Madonna's infamous "Like a Virgin" performance at the 1984 VMAs, topped off with Madonna -- dressed as a groom -- performing "Hollywood." But let's be real, the kiss was all that really mattered to the masses

3. Lady Gaga, 2009

"Paparazzi"

In what may be Gaga's best awards show performance (tied with her 2010 Grammy pair-up with Elton John), the Mother Monster riffed on her "Paparazzi" video with a treatment as equally epic. Instead of the video's paralyzing fall, Gaga takes one in the chest, dripping (faux) blood on stage and being strung up from the ceiling. Even for Gaga, this was gasp-worthy.

2. Britney Spears, 2001

"I'm A Slave 4 U"

All sexy and grown-up, Britney busted out in a big way at the 2001 VMAs, channeling the sauna vibe of her "I'm A Slave 4 U" video with a jungle-themed performance. Coincidentally, she also channeled the very un-sexy Jack Hanna, sauntering around with a bright yellow boa constrictor around her neck.

1. Michael Jackson, 1995

Medley

Michael Jackson proved, yet again, just why he's the King of Pop at the '95 show. Not only did he give MTV viewers a 10-minute medley of many of his biggest hits; he did it with on-stage costume changes, Moonwalking, Slash shredding on guitar, dance-fighting, enough crotch-grabbing for the whole of the '90s, and a speech in the middle to boot. Such was the awesome power of the memory of this spectacular MJ performance that Billboard.com was inundated with thousands and thousands and thousands of fans voting for this 16 year old moment.

Brand princess Rihanna is currently in London promoting her Reb’l Fleur fragrance at the House of Fraser. Although raking in an impressive $29 million last year, she wore a familiar get-up.

Pop singing activist Lady Gaga showed up to New York’s Roseland Ballroom to support her good friend Beyoncé, as she performed for the third night on her “4 Intimate Nights with Beyoncé” concert.

The “Born This Way” singer sported a black and white laced attire, only Cruella de Vil would envy, as she watched “Honey B” perform.

Katy Perry has scored her fifth number one single from a single album, with her latest hit “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” She becomes the first woman and second artist, next to Michael Jackson, in the 53-year history of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart to accomplish this feat.

In an interview with Billboard, the 26-year-old poster child for bubblegum pop gushed about her latest achievement.

“Hitting No. 1 is always a great moment, but when it turns into a small piece of history, you’re reminded of how many millions of people are connected to each other by even one tiny event,” she says. “Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. Ever since I was 9 years old, singing into my hairbrush, I’ve dreamed very big dreams, but today is bigger than my dreams. What a nice first birthday present for ‘Teenage Dream’!”

Michael Jackson’s 1987 album Bad spawned 7 US singles, 5 of which reached the top of the charts. Read more on Perry’s number ones here.

Unfortunately, Katy’s triumph is turmoil for the music industry according to singer-songwriter Linda Perry. The 46-year-old former lead singer of 4 Non Blondes and hit songwriter for Christina Aguilera (“Beautiful”), P!nk (“Get the Party Started”) and Alicia Keys (“Superwoman”) had a few choice words for the reigning pop queen. Before hitting the stage at the Ford Amphitheater in Hollywood, entertainment host Heath Daniels asked Linda about the ever-changing music industry and its current state; Grungy Perry responded:

“It’s different. Like when you listen to the Adele record – I’m not a huge fan of Adele, but it’s a solid record… and it’s selling,” she explains. “It means people are still buying records.”

Linda continues her explanation by criticizing Katy’s success, which is achieved in a multi-polar approach, as it relates to Adele’s.

“It’s the crap… like, who wants a f*cking Katy Perry record? I’m sorry. You know, you’re gonna get the two songs that are probably the hits that are good, but the rest of the album is gonna be crap. It is, it’s gonna sound like sh*t, and who cares about buying that record? So people download the single and then that’s it.”

The brash rocker then attempts to clean up her commentary, however she leaves a bulk of residue.

“[I'm] not saying Katy is bad – she’s great for what she does, but she’s not reinventing the wheel – she’s not giving substance. She’s just giving microwave popcorn for you to feast on at this moment. […] She’s not looking to change the world musically. […] that is part of the reason why the music business is in turmoil.”

Sorry to say, but Linda is wrong; there are three good songs on the album.

Some won’t agree with Linda’s statements, and I’m sure Katy’s Candy land fans have bombarded Linda with hate-mail and threats, but one must admit the older Perry’s opinion is supported by a firm foundation.

Artists such as Katy, Rihanna, Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj release gimmick-ridden material that won’t be remembered tomorrow, yet receive wide success and acclaim; whereas artists like Brandy, JoJo, Ashanti and Ciara, who embody some form of talent and offer something musically artistic, struggle to garner a mere illegal download.

While reading one of the sticky notes attached to my mind, I recalled a 2009 interview Katheryn Hudson participated in during a tour stoup in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was hosted by eccentric interviewer Nardwuar the Human Serviette, where Katy discussed writing with Linda. (action starts at 6:53)

What went wrong?

For the record: to date, Katy’s Teenage Dream has earned an estimated $50 million, sold some 1.7 million copies and sold over 20 million singles downloads (according to Nielsen SoundScan).

'Justin Bieber Way' sign stolen two days after Texas mayor for the day, 11, renamed Main Street

A street near Dallas renamed Justin Bieber Way after the teenage heart throb has been stolen - less than 48 hours after an 11-year-old 'mayor for the day' renamed the road.

Caroline Gonzalez served as 'mayor' of Forney, Texas after winning an essay contest organised by the town, and her first major act in office was renaming Main Street in honour of her favourite pop star.

The sign was scheduled to remain in place through the weekend, but residents reported it missing on Thursday morning.

Caroline's father, Tony Gonzalez, told The Dallas Morning News he had 'never seen her so mad.'

The town's real mayor, Darren Rozell, vowed to replace the sign.

Mr Rozell said: 'It may be someone's idea of a joke. But we're not going to leave this little girl's summer on a sour note.'

The temporary sign went up on Tuesday during a brief ceremony after Caroline won a contest meant to get young people interested in municipal government.

She's active in student council, recycling and community service projects, according to Pegasus News.

Though town officials wanted to invite the Baby singer along to the ceremony, they were not able to reach him to give him an invitation or for a comment.

Baby: Justin Bieber was not at the ceremony and has not commented on the Texas street named after him for the day

Winner: The temporary sign went up today during a brief ceremony after Caroline won a contest meant to get young people interested in municipal government

Bieber, 17, is not from the U.S. but in fact Ontario, Canada.

The sign only cost the town about $20 and would only be displayed today for one day.

Forney - known as the 'antique capital of Texas' has a population of about 15,000 and is located east of Dallas.

Lady Gaga Confirmed to Perform at 2011 MTV VMAs

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will feature live performances by many of today’s biggest artists, and now the network has confirmed that Lady Gaga has been added to the lineup.
The ‘Born This Way’ singer joins the likes of Adele, Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown and Young the Giant, who have also been announced as performers for the star-studded evening. MTV is expected to unveil the names of additional artists who will take the stage in the coming days.
On Thursday, Aug. 18 at 7:49PM, the pop star will appear on MTV and LOGO for ‘MTV First: Lady Gaga.’ The program will feature a special VMA announcement by the singer, as well as the premiere of her new VMA promo.
Gaga is nominated for four awards this year, including Best Female Video (‘Born This Way’), Best Art Direction (‘Judas’), Best Choreography (‘Judas’) and Best Video With a Message (‘Born This Way’). She is also rumored to be participating in the hush-hush VMA tribute to Britney Spears, which may incorporate appearances by Madonna, Kesha, Katy Perry and more.
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 9PM ET/PT on MTV and MTV.com.
