The 2016-17 WACC VISTA Team participated in a National Day of Service in honor of Dr. King by organizing service projects or volunteering for existing events in their communities. VISTA members rolled up their sleeves to make applesauce, shovel mulch, read to kids, collect food donations, and ask neighbors what their dream is for their community. “BAN THE BOX” PHILANTHROPY CHALLENGE

Ban the Box Philanthropy Challenge

Every day, many Americans are denied the opportunity to compete for quality jobs that can provide stability and security for their families—all because of a prior history of convictions or arrests. This form of employment discrimination has a disproportionate impact on men of color, who are more likely to be incarcerated as a result of rampant over-criminalization. Addressing this problem requires the involvement of a wide spectrum of stakeholders. All employers can play a role, including those in the philanthropic sector.

In August 2015, foundation leaders affiliated with the Executives’ Alliance for Boys & Men of Color submitted a letter to President Obama urging him to issue an executive order to “Ban the Box” in federal government hiring and in federal contractor hiring, which would open countless employment opportunities in the private sector. In November 2015 President Obama took action to move toward banning the box in the federal government’s hiring process—an important step that set the stage for more work to come.

The Executives’ Alliance is now expanding this effort by issuing a challenge to all U.S. philanthropic institutions to take action by adopting fair chance hiring policies and ensuring that questions about criminal convictions do not appear on applications for employment with their foundations.

From Philanthropic Support to Action

While many foundations routinely provide funding to not-for-profit organizations engaged in important policy initiatives, it is less common for foundation Presidents and CEOs to use their leadership voice in support of those same initiatives. Through the

Ban the Box Philanthropy Challenge, the Executives’ Alliance offers them an important opportunity to be vocal leaders, publicly aligning their foundations’ business practices with their core values and the missions of their grantee partners.

As part of the Challenge, Executives’ Alliance members and their allies have worked ensure that their own hiring policies and practices comply with the civil rights and consumer laws regulating criminal background checks for employment. They have also challenged their colleagues in other foundations to do the same. Over 40 foundations have already joined the call to action. Click here for a list of participating foundations.

In addition, the Executives’ Alliance has commissioned the National Employment Law Project to develop a Model Fair Chance Hiring /”Ban the Box” Policy and Toolkit to provide technical assistance to its members and other foundations seeking to update their hiring practices. Designed specifically for employers in the philanthropic sector, the model policy will include components featured in the strongest fair change hiring laws in the country.

By adopting fair hiring policies, foundations are playing their part as employers to ensure that they are removing the stigma associated with a record, and setting an example for other foundations and their grantees to follow. By encouraging other foundations to consider these simple implementations and fund job creation initiatives to assist people with records, enormous progress can be made to advance economic opportunity for formerly incarcerated individuals and also reduce recidivism.

Americorps VISTA - MLK Day 2016

Pierce Community College - MLK Day 2016

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is about doing something positive for others. This is something our Americorps VISTA Members take very seriously. For this MLK Day our members planned and participated in various events throughout their communities with the overarching goal of helping others. Below is just a small glimpse of the many wonderful things they are doing for their communities.

Washington State University: Ashley Hope

Washington Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Ashley Hope, worked with WSU students and community members on a SLO (Sustainable Local Organic) Food Drive for MLK Day. The drive aimed for higher quality, nutritious foods as well as to educate locals on food insecurity rates of the community. At the end of the week-long events, we had collected 585.5 lbs. of food (which is about 488 meals) with 60 lbs. being fresh produce. There were 63 student volunteers that worked 127.8 hours. There was a total cash donation of $39.25 and about 200 reusable SLO tote bags were handed out.

Spokane Falls Community College: Elon Ron

On MLK Day student volunteers completed five different service projects for non-profits and social service organizations throughout Spokane. At Spokanimals Humane Society volunteers cleaned out and organized an animal food storage unit. Volunteers at the Transitional Living Center successfully reorganized and cleaned a community store and bagged clothing for donation. Students at the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center assisted custodial staff in sanitizing common areas and helping eliminating the contraction of hospital acquired illnesses. Volunteers moved furniture and reorganized office spaces at Nexus Inland NW, a resource center for blind and deaf individuals. Many students and faculty also assisted in Spokane’s annual Homeless Connect, an event that allows the homeless in Spokane access to food, clothing, health care, and other essential resources.

Everett Community College: Blake Nakatsu

Blake Nakatsu, Washington Campus Compact VISTA member and two Everett CC AmeriCorps members coordinated and led a group of students, both high school and community college, to historic Everett High School where they picked up litter, cleaned window, disinfected doors and classrooms. After the clean-up they led a student reflection on the significance and impact Dr. Martin Luther King has had on communities large and small and our role in our own community.

Eastern Washington University: Aunja Norland

Eastern Washington University’s Washington Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA member, Aunja Norland, helped to organize MLK Day events this year by putting together a planning committee with other Spokane campuses (Gonzaga, WSU-Spokane, Spokane Falls and Whitworth University). Each institution invited students to attend the City of Spokane’s MLK Day Unity Rally and Unity March in downtown Spokane and thereafter organized and placed students at local non-profits to spend the day serving the community. Other AmeriCorps members from Spokane were invited and served at locations Aunja coordinated for them

EWU placed 87 student volunteers at nine different non-profits and contributed 261 hours of volunteering. Aunja also organized service projects for 12 other AmeriCorps to participate in. Groups were led by Aunja’s Student Leadership Team, a group of 14 students she’s been training throughout her service term to facilitate various projects. Volunteers received lunch, a t-shirt, and transportation to and from their non-profit project site.

Big Bend Community College: Ruben Miranda-Juarez

Washington Campus Compact VISTA member Ruben Miranda-Juarez worked together with Service USA to deliver furniture to low-income families in Moses Lake.
