We're using an alternative approach to rice farming. MPD ( multi purpose detergent ) is aloe vera-based and the good thing about using this is we don't have to use pesticides and fungicides anymore in the rice field.

It happened about a year ago.
My brother-in-law was about to board his plane from Manila to Tacloban.
As he reached his designated seat near the front of the plane, somebody who looked familiar had already taken his seat and she was busy chatting with the person beside her.

This somebody is a well-known Television personality.

"Excuse me, that's supposed to be my seat," said my brother-in-law, or something to that effect.

The well-known tv personality just looked at him from head to foot, then ignored him and continued chatting with her companion.

"Excuse me miss, that's my seat number..." said my brother-in-law.
"Hindi mo ba ako kilala?" asked miss tv personality in a haughty tone.

"Hindi." Well...actually, he does.

Who doesn't?

She's a regular co-host of an evening talk show.

"Doon ka na lang sa likuran, maingay kasi doon..."

"Ba't di mo palipatin dun 'yang kasama mo? Kaya ko nga pinili 'yang seat na 'yan kasi ayoko rin dun..."

Then he called the stewardess over to settle the matter at hand.
The result? Miss tv personality had to vacate my brother-in-law's seat and walked to her own designated seat at the back.

The moral of the story?

Never utter the words, "Hindi mo ba ako kilala?" As if you already have the right to step on other people's toes.
If you think, just because you already achieved celebrity status, you already have the right to have your own way with people...and you think you can get away with it, then you got another think coming.

Young voters line up on the last day of registration (for the 2010 Sangguniang Kabataan Elections) at the back of the Ormoc City Super Dome.

I still think that the Sangguniang kabataan is a breeding ground for corrupt government officials of the future. This is where the youth learn how to buy votes. This is where they learn the meaning of tong-pats from various SK projects.

And we'll all be doomed to endure endless barangay basketball tournaments, barangay beauty contests, amateur singing contests, and the usual barangay street light projects, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Sangguniang kabataan Officials.

I'm absolutely sure the national government's funds will be money well-spent if they scrap the Sangguniang Kabataan.
And instead, build more school rooms, improve school facilities and hire more qualified teachers so that this country may yet see some improvement in the quality of its education system.

Congratulations! You are now a college graduate. You are now also a part of the hundreds of thousands of unemployed. Kind of depressing, isn't it?

Don't worry, it's just the way things are. Unless you are at the top twenty of your graduating class and unless you're a product of a well-known university, chances are, you'd probably end up as a salesclerk in some big department store.

A friend of mine who used to work in a big power-generation company confided to me,"First thing we do is determine what university a job applicant comes from."
His point?

Where you get your college education is an important factor in the employer's selection process.

Even if you're the valedictorian in your graduating class but you come from some second rate school or worse, from some "diploma mill college," while your competition might be at the twentieth spot but it so happens he graduated from the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University or de la Salle...who do you think the employer would choose?

It's not a surprise to see sales clerks in big department stores with college degrees in education, accounting, business administration, etc. At least they have a job. But do you think it's fair? No, it's not.

How do you think your parents would feel...and how would you feel when after all the time, effort and money you spent to acquire your college degree, you end up earning minimum wage as a contractual worker?

Fortunately, we were created by God equally. He gave each person on earth exactly twenty four hours in one day.

David vs. Goliath - Song Writer Gary Granada's Complaint Against GMA7

Gary Granada vs GMA Kapuso by dosomethingworthwhile

Pinoy song writer and composer Gary Granada may have been taken advantaged of by broadcast network giant GMA7 through its Kapuso Foundation.

The Kapuso Foundation wanted to use Gary's music services, because of his expertise in jingle writing, to do a jingle on its "Tripid Handog Edukasyon" campaign with Procter and Gamble.

So, they gave him the commission.
They gave him the lyrics which he was supposed to set to music with a length of sixty seconds.

He edited the lyrics in such a way as to fit in with his music.

Unfortunately, GMA 7 rejected his final study and contacted another song writer to do the jingle for them. And...here's where things got interesting, they used Gary's edited lyrics and musical structure in their final product.

What amuses me is that GMA 7 is quite active in the campaign against piracy in the music industry.

Amazing Aloe Vera- An Alternative Approach to Rice Farming

The Aloe Vera plant has been around for thousands of years. It is known to have medicinal value and is widely used as a main component in pharmaceuticals and in cosmetics. The Aloe Vera plant consists of 275 species and it is divided into two families:

* Cactus- which is regarded as false aloe, has 32% -38% medicinal potency

* Liliaceae- which is regarded as the true aloe, has a 100% medicinal value and it has 200 bio-active nutrients.

You might ask, “What is the role of Aloe Vera in organic farming?”

In the Philippines, hundreds of rice farmers now use a multi-purpose detergent, which has Aloe Vera as its main ingredient, in spraying their rice fields instead of using harmful pesticides, with amazing results.

• It is biodegradable and environment friendly

• Loaded with bio-active nutrients which enhance soil health

• Non-health hazard to farmers

• Proven improved harvest yield

• Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers by 50%

• Reduces soil acidity

It is found to be effective against rice pests such as the brown plant hopper, stem borer, green leaf hopper, rice bug and defoliators such as army worms and rice leaf folders because of the presence of Thiamine, which acts as insect repellant. This disinfestant/disinfectant action works in three ways:

• Systemic action--because of the lignin, which is a deep-penetrating agent, surfactants and solubilizers

• Contact action--because of the thiamine, surfactants and solubilizers

• Stomach action--because of the surfactants and solubilizers

Method of application:
Time is a major factor in the method of applying the detergent in the rice field. The ideal time to spray is at 4pm or when the sun is low on the horizon and the temperature cools down. Many farmers who did their spraying in the morning soon found out to their horror that the sun’s rays burned the detergent-drenched stalks which turned yellowish in color. Consequently, their harvest yielded a low average per hectare. In addition to that, farmers soon learned and refrained from spraying the detergent during the flowering stage because the spikelets tend to fall away from the panicles.

Economical:
One to two bottles(at 1.89 li/bottle)of multi-purpose detergent per hectare is good news to rice farmers because they don't have to buy costly pesticides and fungicides anymore. All it takes is one cap-full of detergent per 16 liters of water inside a back-pack type sprayer which is commonly used by farmers throughout the Philippines.

A farmer friend of mine whose PSB Rc82 variety previously yielded only 80 cavans per hectare became a convert when her rice harvest improved to 148 cavans per hectare after she used the multi-purpose detergent.

The presence of minerals in the detergent such as potassium, magnesium, iron, sodium, carbon, zinc, manganese, copper and chromium makes it a good substitute for liquid fertilizers.
Furthermore, it has anthraquinones, monosaccaharides, polysaccharides and enzymes that make it a good resistance builder and highly effective in combating rice diseases such as tungro, rice blast, stem rot, downy mildew, leaf spot, and dieback.

This multi-purpose detergent, which is made in the USA, is marketed in the Philippines as , you guessed it, a multi-purpose detergent.

Ultimately, it is the farmer, being the end user, who has the final say on whether or not what he sprays on his rice farm is beneficial to him and his environment.

*The Marketing System – Many so-called network marketing companies ask for big registration fees and pay a commission each time a network marketer recruits someone into the business. The Department of Trade and Industry says that if a network marketing company does this, you should be wary because this is an indication of a pyramiding scam. A real network marketing company pays a commission to its associate only if he or she has sold a product or has recruited someone into the business as a consequence of that individual having bought and sold the products himself.

*Attitude- In my mind, this is the most important factor that determines a distributor's success or failure in network marketing. If you want to succeed in this business, you must have a good learning attitude. This means study and learn as much as you can about your products, your company, your marketing plan, etc. Stay away from negative people, you know, the ones who constantly discourage you and tell you why you cannot succeed in life. By the way, it is better that you go with positive people because in MLM, you constantly encounter truckloads of rejection.

On the bright side, being a network marketer means more income- if you work hard and follow the marketing system.

The reality though, is, for every successful network marketer, there are hundreds, if not thousands who fail in the business due to some reason or another.

Being a network marketer offline can be very humiliating when friends and family get tired of your recruiting tactics and consider you a pest. There are also others whose unscrupulous practices make network marketing a bad name.

The Shawshank Redemption - my view

I must have viewed the DVD copy of this movie more than five times already. The first time, I was ready to dismiss it as just another prison movie. I was wrong.

This movie is actually about hope, friendship, and keeping one's dignity in spite of the extremely difficult circumstances one finds himself in.

There are those of us who unconsciously wallow in our own personal Shawshank prison...a bad marriage... broken relationships... unfulfilled dreams...dead-end jobs, rejection, etc.
This movie shows us hope, and yes, redemption.

Tim Robbins stars as Andy Dufresne, a banker who gets wrongly convicted and incarcerated at Shawshank Prison in 1947 for the murder of his wife and her lover.

Inside the prison walls, his demeanor earns him the respect of Red(Morgan Freeman), the prison fixer. The movie features powerful performances by the entire cast; two supporting characters stand out in the persons of Brooks(James Whitmore) and Warden Norton(Bob Gunton) who reeks of hypocrisy...he quotes passages from the Bible while he engages in graft and corruption at the same time.

The screenplay is an adaptation and is well crafted by Frank Darabont from Stephen King's novella "Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption."

Police recently arrested four students who allegedly took part in repeatedly raping a 16 year old Marketing student inside a classroom in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines last June 25, 2008.

The suspects, aged 15-16 years, one of whom is a girl, happen to be classmates of the victim. The female suspect is accused of conspiring with the other three in doing the dastardly act.

The victim told authorities that she was forced to drink liquor laced with drugs, and then they took turns in raping her. Apparently not contented with just raping the poor girl, these juvenile monsters uploaded a compilation of photos of the alleged gang rape in YouTube. The sons of bitches probably
hoped to earn bragging rights.

Instead, what they did will probably strengthen the case against them.

Other PUP students condemned the arrests because they say the suspects were humiliated in front of their fellow students. Child rights advocates meanwhile cautioned authorities in handling the case because all those involved are minors. They stressed that the suspects also have rights under the Juvenile Justice Law.

Here’s what I think of the whole mess:

Those students who were more concerned with the suspects’ arrests as “humiliating” must have a very warped sense of values.
Look here assholes, the victim was herself put under intense humiliation when her rapists uploaded photos of the gang rape on YouTube. They destroyed her not just physically but also emotionally.

I’m sure when the perpetrators’ lawyers come into the picture, they’ll dazzle the court with their intensive knowledge of legalese and put the victim to more shame than she’s experiencing now.
So, what happens next if after all is said and done in court, and what the perpetrators all get are light sentences on account of their being minors?

Here’s what will happen…they’ll surely find other potential victims on campus.

So, if by chance the Philippine Justice system only manages to punish these juvenile rapists with a slap in the wrist,
Then I wish some vigilante group somehow manages to put the names of these teen aged rapists on their death list.

3am…. ”Mickey, come in….”

No reply.

After 10 minutes, nitubag si Mickey, “…nitawag ka boss?”

“Location nimo…?”

“Dia ko nag-check conveyor system nato boss…”

“Ah ok…”

Didto ra gani si Mickey sa yarda, naglingkod-lingkod sa suod sa payloader, daa piyong-piyong ginagmay.
In fairness, dili man gyud tu-od kalikayan ning matagpilaw ta inig duty ug night shift.
Pero, wa lang pod kahibawo si Mickey nga nag-roving diay si Sir Luck niadtong orasa.

Converter Furnace- An Insider Account of Training day in a Copper Smelter

Sometime in the mid-80’s, cadet engineers were assigned to our section of the smelter department for a few days, to observe firsthand the process of converting molten matte into 95% blister copper.

These bright young men were orientated by management in the various stages of copper smelting and refining; they were groomed to become the company’s future supervisors and managers.

So, this day, the cadets, there were three or four of them, were observing the slag blow stage, wherein a huge volume of air is blown into the converter furnace, in the range of 35,000 normal cubic meters per hour, in order to oxidize and separate the iron content from the molten matte.

They were kind of mesmerized as they watched the punching machine in operation, unmindful of the ear-splitting noise.

The punching machine is a contraption used to regulate the volume of air blown into the converter furnace.

Once the air pressure increases and the air flow rate drops lower than 35,000 normal cubic meters per hour, the operator sitting inside it aims for the tuyeres, these are actually pressurized holes which line the sides of the furnace, and lets loose four punching rods, in a quick back and forth motion, at the touch of a button. He does this repeatedly to four sets of holes simultaneously while the machine moves sideways from one end of the furnace up to the other end until the air pressure drops and the air flow rate normalizes.

One cadet sidled up to our leadman, whom I call Mickey(not his real name) and asked,

“Dong, how do we know when to use the punching machine?”

I don’t know if he just wanted to make chit-chat or what, I’m sure they covered this topic already in the training center before they came over.

Maybe it’s just human nature, but some of my co-workers, who were Japan-trained, were not too generous in sharing what they know of the finer points in the Converter process.

Mickey replied, “ When your butt gets itchy…”

End of story.

Lollipop-sucking Jorge "Travieso" Arce won over Thailand's David Lookmahanak in the main event of Top Rank's "Latin Fury" championship boxing card held in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

I watched that main attraction on television via Solar Sports and even though I'm not technically well-versed in boxing, the way I saw it, Lookmahanak clearly won the fight.

True, Arce dropped the Thai in the 7th round with a body shot followed by a left hook but the Thai fighter continued to be the aggressor and landed the more telling blows all throughout the later rounds. After twelve rounds, Lookmahanak won the bout...or so I thought.

But when the official scorecards were announced, the scores were: 114-114, 115-113, 115-114

...and the winner by majority decision: Jorge Arce

Shameless judges...

...or did the Mexicans give the Thais a dose of their own medicine?
You see, if a foreign boxer wants to win in Thailand, he has to win by knockout because otherwise, chances are, he'd be just another statistic in its notorious list of hometown decisions.

You look at your ticket every now and then, while watching the lotto draw live on tv.
Then you stare in utter disbelief as every number in your ticket finds its way on the screen. You've just won the Jackpot prize, now, what would you do?
Yell out loud and let the whole world know you're now a millionaire?

Big mistake.

When the ordinary, average guy wins the big money, chances are, he's overwhelmed by it all.

Suddenly, he finds out he has many friends and relatives who materialize at his doorstep and congratulate him for his good fortune. Of course, they also expect him to hand out cash gifts.
Chances are, he spends money on drinking sprees with his buddies and attracts more hangers-on because of the way he parts with his cash.

A family friend once told me her brother-in-law once won five million pesos in the lottery.
That was years ago.
Apparently, he and his family were not able to cope with their new-found wealth and squandered their money.
Now, he's back to zero.

There must be a lesson there somewhere.
