Dear friends

Tuscany is undoubtedly one of the safest areas of Italy to visit in times of Covid. Our region is characterized by small cities (except Florence) and many small towns surrounded by beautiful hills. The population density is low compared to other places in the world which makes a trip in our lands safer, so if you are reading these lines why are you thinking of visiting them this season, below you will find some routes and tips that can help you.

1 - Establish the base in an Agriturismo or Apartment in town.

Tuscany is a region that during the 80s and 90s had a significant rural tourism boom and since those years the amount of accommodation available in rural houses and small towns has increased every year. If your trip is from May to October my advice is to search among the many possibilities of rural houses that are on the internet. Most of them offer furnished apartments with kitchen and swimming pool and are perfect for a family getaway since they will allow you to have lunch and dinner at home. If, on the other hand, your trip in Tuscany is designed more for the winter months, perhaps an excellent option that is also very economical is to stay in town apartments. One of them that I recommend for its price, location and quality are those of Belle Viste, although if you search on websites like airbnb you will find many and at excellent prices.

2 - Routes through the villages

As I mentioned in the introduction, Tuscany offers many places of interest, in particular its small towns and its fairytale landscapes. Both activities are relatively safe in times of Covid since there are many panoramic routes that you can do with your car and visits to the towns are relatively safe because you will not find a large number of people.

3 - Travel with your own car.

The best way to get to know Tuscany is precisely with a car because most towns are difficult to access by public transport so this season the trip through Tuscany by car is not only more comfortable but it is much safer.

4 - Take a Covid Test with ease and safety for yourself and for others.

The Tuscany region offers many places to take the covid test at a price of around € 50. These tests can easily be found at the same airport in Florence or Pisa. There are also many medical centers that offer it at a slightly higher price throughout the territory. In these days taking the test is compulsory.

Hello friends, in this post I would like to tell you about Tuscany as the preferred destination for bikers from all over the world. Tuscany, it is a region that lovers of two wheels are equally passionate about both the beauty of its sinuous curves and the spectacular landscapes that are even better on the bike.

For those who travel from north europe there are two good options for bikers, either reach Tuscany through the France or trough the Alps.

Although the number of landscape roads could be said to be infinite, it is true that one of the areas that most fascinates the biker is the south of the region. If someone is thinking of a motorcycle trip my advice would be to look for a "general headquarters" in a small village in southern Tuscany and from there go touring the different localities in the area. One of my friends who traveled by motorbike from Paris chose to stay at Villa Vignacce and from there he went on day trips to the different villages in the surroundings. I have also coincided with groups formed by several motorcycles that prefer to go route and sleep every day in one place. This option is recommended in the months of spring and autumn but somewhat less in the month of August when the area is much more crowded and it may be more difficult to find accommodations available in each place visited.

One of the most recommended routes for lovers of two wheels is the area of Valdorcia, and especially the roads from places such as the small and unique Buonconvento lead to the charming Pienza. They are kilometers and kilometers of spectacular landscapes that allow to contemplate the magical Tuscan hills lined with cypress trees lined with a perfection that borders on excellence. An unforgettable tour for those who travel by motorbike to Tuscany.

Another route of curves and incredible scenery is the route that leads from Valdorcia to Montalcino (cradle of one of the most delicious and exclusive wines of the region: the famous Brunello di Montalcino), and from there the road that leads to the fabulous Abbey Sant'Antimo nestled in a wonderful place where it seems that the world has suddenly stopped. This is an excursion that should not be missing in the road book of any biker.

While these roads are crossed it is necessary to bear in mind that in some of the routes that cross the most natural places it is possible that more than one animal crosses at a great speed in your way so it is very important to travel with the five senses put in driving.

A great advantage of traveling on two wheels is especially at the entrance of crowded towns such as San Gimignano where it is possible to park in areas enabled for motorcycles outside the towers, and that allows access to the city without No doubt, something that does not always happen with those who travel by car. In fact due to the large number of bikers who travel the region it is always very easy to match other travelers who travel by motorcycle, share routes and advice.

The Tuscany that is the paradigm of the perfect destination with all the ingredients to satisfy the most demanding traveler, is also a unique paradise for bikers.

Lucca in one day

It goes without saying that Lucca, the city of 100 churches, can not be visited in a single day, although one day may be enough to enjoy its essence, admire its artistic beauty and awaken the desire to return, to discover the most hidden and mysterious that this wonderful city of Tuscany offers.

The itinerary that I propose requires a full day therefore the ideal would be to spend the night before in a B & B or a hotel in the city (even outside the walls), to leave early and have a minimum of 8 hours to know and enjoy Lucca. Our Lucca itinerary begins with what are, from my point of view, the most beautiful in the city; the historic walls. The Walls are an inseparable element of the city that make it unique and known throughout the world. In fact, they are the only walls in the world that are completely walkable, both on foot and by car (although circulation to road traffic is currently prohibited).

Four kilometers is the duration of the panoramic walk from where incredible views of the city of Lucca are contemplated. From the top it is possible to appreciate its hidden corners always in the shade of centennial trees that accompanied you during the whole walk. Secret passageways, hiding places and bastions enclose the historical memory of a city that has a lot to tell, as well as marvelous incredible places such as Botanical Garden, a kind of public garden that, in addition to being a floristic heritage of the Walls of Lucca Park, hosts a library, a herbalist and much more.

After the walk through the walls you reach the heart of the city. Lucca is also known as the city of 100 churches because of the large number of religious buildings present, beautiful artistic and architectural examples that are difficult to visit in a single day. I recommend, therefore, focus on the main thing that includes especially the Duomo (the Cathedral of San Martín), where some beautiful works of art are preserved, such as the tomb of Ilaria carretto by Jacopo della Quercia and a wooden crucifix of the Santa Faz - ancient symbol of the city. Another church that deserves to be visited is the Basilica of San Frediano - from where the most important processions of the city come out, such as the one that takes place on the occasion of the Feast of the Holy Cross.

From San Frediano you can get to any part of the historic center and if the weather is fine I recommend enjoying a pleasant walk that will make you discover the best places in the city such as the Plaza del Anfiteatro. The square is an authentic Roman gem of Lucca (in fact, here was the old forum, and it is precisely in the original elliptical structure typical of the Roman amphitheatres where the current square was built). The buildings surrounding the square are full of small restaurants typical of the Lucca area and shops with local crafts.

Leaving the Amphitheater, you can visit the famous Guinigi Tower well known for having a giant albor at its top. If you do not have much time you can avoid the climb to the top as you will have enjoyed the views of the city from the walls. At the top of the tower for those who decide to visit it there is a tree and a hanging garden very beautiful and unique since it is located in a medieval tower.

Before leaving the historical center, I recommend that you make a break to Piazza Napoleone, known as Piazza Grande, especially if you visit the city during the Christmas period since in this square an ice rink is installed where it is possible to skate. If you like museums my advice is that you visit the National Gallery of Art located in the Palazzo Mansi from the 17th century, where you will find important works by Italian artists, mostly from the Renaissance. If you are interested in gastronomy, during the walk through the streets of Lucca I recommend a stop, even short, in one of the many shops that sell the famous "buccellato", the bread with raisins, try it because it is one of the most characteristic local products from the city. And in this way we have reached the end of our virtual visit to the city of Lucca, we have recommended what we believe are the fundamental places without which you could not say you have been in Lucca, but the attractions that you can see obviously do not end here . It is true that accumulating too many places to see would make the visit an anxious race against time, so the advice is to savor and enjoy calmly a city that still retains the appearance of past time and stop and try the typical products. Renting a bicycle or a tandem could be a good alternative to accelerate the tour of the city, you will find them at every corner at affordable prices. Discovering the secrets of Chianti Classico

Villages, castles and of course ... rows of vineyards!

Few territories can offer a panorama as rich and evocative as the Chianti Classico: green hills populated by kilometers and miles of vineyards, olive groves, narrow villages that arise between wide medieval walls, winding streets, castles and fortresses. The Chianti called Classico is the one that extends between Florence and Siena and includes the municipalities of Greve, Panzano, Gaiole, Radda, Castellina and Castelnuovo Berardenga.

The mini guide we propose highlights the main aspects of each location, with some useful links to obtain even more detailed information. In the lower part of the article, you will also find a map showing the various villages, all located between Siena and Florence.

The travel time for the whole itinerary, starting from Greve in Chianti or Castelnuovo Berardenga (without intermediate stops) is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, so even if some stops are included to take pictures or visit the places calmly, this itinerary is perfect to do it in a day.

The villages to visit in the Chianti Classico

Greve in Chianti

Our trip could only start from Greve in Chianti, considered the entrance to the Chianti area. This lively city is famous for its unique square, which since the Middle Ages was the central market for the villages, castles and farms of the surrounding hills.

The square is almost triangular and is flanked on three sides by large porches, which protect from rain and sun during shopping.

In the center is the statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano, discoverer of the Bay of New York. In the narrow part is the church of Santa Croce, of medieval origin but with neo-Renaissance forms that houses some beautiful works of sacred art, including a triptych with the Virgin and Saints of Bicci di Lorenzo.

Greve also offers the opportunity to taste and taste many typical Chianti products. Under the arcades of the square there are many shops of craftsmen, bars and restaurants, where you can taste excellent wines and other typical products of the area such as their famous sausages.

Panzano in Chianti

A few kilometers from Greve is Panzano, a popular city of Chianti. From the 12th century Panzano played an important role in the defense of the territories of Florence. The Panzano Castle was in fact an important bulwark in defense of the Republic of Florence in the wars between Florence and Siena.

It is nice to walk through the old town and breathe its atmosphere of past times, then stay in the main square to have a glass of wine. In fact, in Panzano there are some wine bars and restaurants that offer tastings of wines and typical products. In addition, there is the Ancient Butcher Cecchini, famous for its excellent Florentine steak, which is cut by decanting the Divine Comedy.

Castellina in Chianti

Continuing towards Siena is Castellina in Chianti, whose origins are very old, as evidenced by the Etruscan tombs of Montecalvario.

The favorable position at the intersection of four areas of Chianti made this city an important strategic and military capital between Florence and Siena. As proof of this function, it is still the imposing fortress that dominates the central square and the charming Via delle Volte that crosses the town and offers breathtaking views. Strolling through the city you can also admire beautiful palaces belonging to important families of Siena and Florence.

It is also worth seeing the Church of S. Salvatore, rebuilt after the Second World War, which houses a beautiful fresco of the late fourteenth century of a Tuscan master. Without any doubt, it is worth visiting also the Chianti Senese Archaeological Museum, which traces the ancient history of this area and preserves the Etruscan finds of Montecalvario.

In Castellina, of course, you can taste the local wines in one of the many bars in the town and enjoy the taste of the Chianti butcher shop where salami is made with an unforgettable flavor.

Radda in Chianti

Leaving the Chiantigiana road and taking the SR429 state road, you reach Radda in Chianti, which preserves its original medieval appearance. The ancient walls still protect the center of the city, which develops in a labyrinth of concentric streets.

The Palazzo del Podestà dominates the center of the village together with the Church of S. Niccolò of Romanesque origin. The palace was used for four centuries by the Captain of the Chianti Lega, as the many coats of arms on the façade recall. On the outskirts of the village is the former convent of the Franciscans of S. Maria in Prato.

Gaiole in Chianti

Not far from Radda is the village of Gaiole in Chianti, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Gaiole for its position halfway between Chianti and Valdarno had become an important market for the various castles in the vicinity. Gaiole still plays an important role in the area, as a major tourist attraction. In fact, there are many farms, wineries and farms that offer their products and their hospitality.

Around Gaiole there are some fortified castles and rocks that deserve a visit such as the Castello di Vertine, the Castello di Meleto, the Pieve di Spaltenna or the Castello di Brolio, today residences for stays in the Chianti region and to taste their products.

Castelnuovo Berardenga

The southernmost part of the Chianti Classico area often remains in the shadow of the frenzy and the curiosity of the first places that are found when entering the region, but these from my point of view are even more beautiful to be out of the routes main.

Castelnuovo Berardenga, founded in 1366, is located on the border between Florence and Siena; Built by the latter, it remained under its control until 1555, when the city was defeated by the Medici family. In Piazza Petrilli, you can still see the remains of the tall tower, transformed in 1755 into the clock tower of the city. The plaza offers a wide open space where you can enjoy the atmosphere of other times and the total tranquility that dominates this place; Along with the Vicolo dell'Arco and its characteristic red brick arches, it is one of the places to stop and admire what surrounds us in this charming little town in Chianti.

South point of Chianti Classico, Castelnuovo Berebenga

Just outside the city, is the charming city of San Gusmé, a small and characteristic town that seems to have stopped at a distant time and offers endless opportunities for wonderful photos.

I also recommend the trip to Certosa di Pontignano, not only because it is an impressive monastery where events are organized, but also because it represents an important part of local history: it served, in fact, as a refuge for Jews and political dissidents during the Second World War. World. Do not forget, finally, add Pieve Pacina to the itinerary, less than 3 km from the city center, perhaps one of the oldest churches in the area, almost certainly existed long before the year 714!

Tastings in the Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico is not only synonymous with memorable landscapes but also with excellent wines.

Take all the time necessary to walk the beautiful rural roads that characterize the landscape and stop from time to time, especially when you see the signs that say "direct sales": to taste the local wines.

The 10 most charming beaches in Tuscany

Tuscany is a diverse region that offers its visitors art, culture, gastronomy, wine and pristine beaches where travelers can relax after getting to know the area’s history-filled cities and picturesque countryside.

No matter what kind of beach you’re looking for, you’ll find it in Tuscany: white sandy beaches, resorts ideal for families traveling with small children, quiet hidden gems, and exclusive destinations where you can rub elbows with the VIPs that gather here every summer.

Costa degli Etruschi

This stretch of coastline in the province of Livorno (Leghorn) takes its name from the ancient peoples who inhabited the region before the coming of the Roman Empire. You’ll find traces of the Etruscans’ presence dotted throughout the coast. The golden beaches in this area range from the well-known Baratti and San Vincenzo beaches to lesser-known gems such as Piombino.

The Costa degli Etruschi is also home to one of the more peculiar beaches in Tuscany, the Caribbean-like Rosignano Solvay beach, which owes its fairy-white color to a local baking soda manufacturing plant.

Near Livorno in Quercianella you’ll also find beautiful rocky beaches like the natural pools of Castiglioncello.

Versilia

Beaches in Versilia (in the province of Lucca) are, in my opinion, not particularly beautiful but are probably the best in the area for visitors looking for entertainment and nightlife.

The best-known beaches in the area (Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio and Lido di Camaiore) are all private beaches that sunbathers must pay to access. VIPs anchor their yachts up and down the coast to take advantage of this area’s nightclubs and Michelin-starred restaurants. The beaches are golden, wide, and offer a range of services.

Spiagge di Pisa

In the province of Pisa the beaches are narrower and the currents tend to be strong, especially around Pisa’s harbor. If you have children with you, the best beaches to visit are Tirrenia and Calambrone.

Argentario and the Grossetano

This is one of my favorite stretches along the Tuscan coastline, boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Italy.

Marina Alberese, a beach at the end of a pine forest, is the perfect spot for families traveling with children.

Cala Violina near Scarlino is a hidden gem, and can only be reached after a 20 minute walk. The bay is spectacular, the sand is a fine white and the water is pure turquoise. This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire country.

In the Argentario and the bay of Orbetello you’ll find Cacciarella, a small beach which gives way to Cala Grande and the gorgeous Cala Gesso, which is ideal for snorkeling. The walk to reach these secluded beaches is more than worth it.

Feniglia and Giannella on the other hand are beautiful golden beaches which are easy to reach and ideal for families with children. Nearby you’ll also find the Bagni di Diocleziano which take their name from a Roman villa in the area. At low tide you can reach ancient roman pools which were used to farm fish.

10 Things to do on a trip to Tuscany

If you are planning a trip to Tuscany here area 10 things which you simply cannot miss!

1 – A walk through the vineyards and a wine tasting

Any time of the year is valid for this activity; however, probably the best time is between the months of April and November, which is when the vines are at their best. There are thousands of places to do a wine tasting although, from my point of view, there are three particularly attractive areas. The first is the area of Brunello (near Montalcino), the second is the Vino Nobile (Montepulciano) and obviously the last is the Chianti region. All three are very different and equally beautiful but if you like the historic castles Chianti is surely the most beautiful in this sense, whereas if you like landscapes and hills that are lost to the horizon then the best area is probably Brunello and Vino Nobile.

2 – Bathe in the thermal baths

Tuscany is a land rich in thermal spas, which are found throughout the region. If you prefer a more Spa type of thermal baths then you should visit the Querciolaia Rapolano Terme di San Giovanni or, instead, if you prefer baths in the middle of nature then you can visit BagnoVignoni and especially those of Saturnia, known worldwide for their beauty. This activity can be done throughout the year. A particularly magical moment is a snowy winter evenings spent in a thermal bath. For those lucky enough to enjoy their holidays at this time of year the most beautiful view is located in southern Tuscany.

3 – A hot-air balloon ride

Balloon tours are usually very expensive, about 250-300 euros per person. However, they are a very nice investment in your memories and an emotion that your loved one will remember for a lifetime. The prettiest tours are those which are carried out in the area of Siena, specifically in Valdorcia. Seeing Tuscany from a hot-air balloon in perfect silence, watching beautiful vineyards, castles and small towns is something that you will remember forever as a truly magical experience. This type of activity can only be done with good weather conditions, therefore, the time of year that I recommend would be between the months of May and September.

4 – A trip to the Isla de Elba

All of the Tuscan coast is especially nice but the southern region from Talamone to Mount Argentario is beautiful, particularly reaching its peak on the island of Elba. This island is located a short distance from the coast and can be reached by ferry and would make a lovely one day excursion. Elba has magnificent beaches with beautiful fondales where you can enjoy the beautiful sea of Tuscany. This activity is ideal from June to September.

5 – Florence and a visit to the Uffizi and the Accademia

Both museums are in Florence, the first was built by the Medici family and preserves many works of art that the lords of Florence collected over hundreds of years. The Accademia instead retains the world famous emblem of the city and Tusany; Michelangelo’s David. A visit to these places is complimented by a comprehensive visit to the city of Florence. This activity can be carried out throughout the year.

6 – Siena Cathedral and a coffee in the Piazza del Campo

A visit to the Cathedral of Siena and the city in general is something that should be included in a visit to Tuscany. The Cathedral of Siena is positively amongst one of the most beautiful of all Christianity, and incredible works of art are preserved inside. The visit to the Cathedral can be complemented with a walk through the amazing old town accompanied with a coffee at one of the many bars that surround its beautiful Piazza del Campo. Enjoy a unique experience with a sunset on the square. This type of activity can be done at any time of year.

7 – A road trip through the scenic roads of Crete Senesi, Valdichiana and Valdorcia

All secondary roads of Tuscany have their charm, however, Crete Senesi is one of my favorites because of the sweet silhouettes of its hills which make this place a true Tuscan feast for the senses.

Another wonderful route is the Valdichiana, which could start from Bettolle. The first part of the route is going to Lucignano and then continue to Cortona and Lake Trasimeno.

The last route I would propose leaving from Bettolle, which passes through Valdorcia, where people have taken the most photos of Tuscany which you will find online. Stops along this road will include Montepulciano and Pienza whilst enjoying the people of Valdorcia.

These roads are very nice at all times of the year, in winter with snow and fog in the background it is very beautiful, especially during the misty mornings.

8 – A walk through the New York of the Middle Ages

Known for its beautiful and well preserved towers San Gimignano can be considered as the New York of the Middle Ages as its rich merchants used to build ever taller towers as a symbol of their power and wealth. Today many of these are still preserved and a walk in San Gimignano will take you back in time. The city also retains a beautiful cathedral. From the top of the village you can enjoy beautiful views of the countryside and vineyards that surround it. This activity can be made throughout the year.

9 – A rib-eye and a plate of sausages by Dario Cecchini

Although the World Heritage Organization has classified the red meat and sausages as products to avoid, this recommendation is unlikely to be followed by the Tuscans who are consumers and producers of great meats and red meat nonetheless remains one of the villages more lived on the planet with the Japanese. Throughout Tuscany you will find many restaurants to eat these delicacies, but there is one, Dario Cecchini, especially singular that I like very much and I want to recommend. 10 – Dizzy yourself up the Tower of Pisa

I could not finish this article without mentioning one of the most famous sights of Tuscany and Italy in the world: the leaning Tower of Pisa.

You will enter a spiral staircase that takes you to the top. You may become a little dizzy and tired but your effort will be worth it for the view from which you enjoy, and it is so incredibly beautiful that this view gave the name to the square under the tower “Piazza dei Miracoli” (Square of Miracles). This activity can also be done throughout the year.

35 Charming Villages in Tuscany!

Dear friends,

First of all, welcome back to the blog!

With today’s article I propose to share an interesting insight to some thirty-five Tuscan villages. Among this selection are the villages, divided by provinces, which I esteem to be of the greatest interest while traveling through Tuscany.

My desire is to help my readers in their search of places of interest, and above all, the top places to visit during a short period in Tuscany.

I hope that I don’t forget any important villages along the way…and we start with:

PROVINCE OF FLORENCE

1 – Barberino Val d’Elsa (Florence)

Barberino Val d’Elsa is a beautiful medieval town situated in the Chianti Fiorentino area. The village is surrounded by ancient walls and retains the original elliptical. Barberino Val d’Elsa has two medieval gates and a main road that connects the two entrances of the Porta Romana (which faces South to Rome) and the Porta Fiorentina (which faces North to Florence).

2 – Certaldo (Florence)

The famous Tuscan writer “Boccaccio”, author of such works as ‘Decameron’ and ‘Dante’s Life’ was born here in Certaldo!

Certaldo is a great place to enjoy authentic Tuscany, especially during September/ October, during the Festival Boccaccesca, which is a major food and wine festival in the area.

During the month of July there is the interesting popular festival Mercantia.

3 – Vinci (Florence)

In Vinci, everyone talks of Leonardo: his birth house, the church where he was baptized, the museum and library dedicated to him. As well as the beauty of the landscape, which Leonardo had seen, and which possibly was the true inspiration for the artist.

4 – Fiesole (Florence)

A few km from Florence you will find Fiesole, a little town from where you can appreciate Florence and the hills surrounding the city. Fiesole can easily be reached by car or bus from Florence’s centre.

PROVINCE OF LUCCA

5 – Barga (Lucca)

Barga is a must if you are going to explore northern Tuscany. This medieval town is a real hidden gem because of its location; just off the main tourist route between the hills of Tuscany and the Apennines. Barga with its 410 metres above sea level is a town worth visiting.

6 – Montecarlo (Lucca)

The city of Montecarlo is located in the province of Lucca and its territory covers an area of 1,559 hectares and a population of about 4,335 habitants.

The old town is very well preserved and surrounded by beautiful walls. Monte Carlo hill is covered with vineyards and olive groves and boasts a production of olive oil and wines of remarkable quality.

PROVINCE OF PISA

7 – Volterra (Pisa)

Surrounded by medieval walls, Volterra dominates from the top of this beautiful part of Tuscany. City of Roman origin, it has conserved its beautiful theater from the year 13 DC. The city has been used as the setting for numerous films, for example in one of the settings from the saga “Twilight”.

8 – Peccioli (Pisa)

The medieval city of Peccioli is situated in the region Valdera between Pisa and Volterra. The city of medieval design and narrow streets has a beautiful central square where there is the Romanesque church of San Verano. This church houses an important painting of St Nicholas and nineteenth-century bell tower which was built by the architect Bellincioni. Peccioli is found on the ‘Wine Route’ and there are many places visitors can sample locally produced wines.

9 – Lari Casciana Terme (Pisa)

The small town of Lari has been inhabited since Etruscan times.

Lari is situated in an area where three peaks join together in the hills of Pisa. The castle looms over the city centre and its construction dates back to medieval times. Most of the current structure is from the mid-seventeenth century. This castle was an important military settlement for the Republic of Pisa because of its dominant position, since its location can be seen from various hills from Pisa to Volterra. From the area that overlooks the coast you can see the village of Peccoli. In this town you can enjoy natural hot springs.

10 – Casale Marittimo (Pisa)

On the hill of Poggio al Bruno, with beautiful views of the coastal plains, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and grain fields Casa Marittimo is a place which has been known since the eighth-century for its old Church of San Andres.

Torn between Casale Vecchio and Casale Nuovo, the city is a fortified medieval town of which still stands are the wall and the two gates. This ancient village is immersed in a wonderful landscape of tinted green near the sea.

11 – Castelnuovo Val di Cecina (Pisa)

Located among some of the most beautiful hills of Tuscany Castelnuovo Val di Cecina emerges as a well-preserved medieval village that extends along the line of valleys Possera and Pavone streams.

The village built on a steep hillside, with its stone houses, narrow alleyways, small arches and steps is undoubtedly one of the most romantic places in Tuscany.

PROVINCE OF AREZZO

12 – Anghiari (Arezzo)

With its colossal walls and winding and steep streets, tunnels and towers, Anghiari is the quintessence of the hills of the Tuscany countryside. It was here, in 1440, on the plain beneath the fortress that is preserved in the town where the Florentine army defeated the Milanese at the Battle of Anghiari. This victory was recreated and celebrated by Leonardo da Vinci in his “Lost Masterpiece”, which now seems to have been found in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

13 – Lucignano (Arezzo)

Lucignano is a small medieval village overlooking the Val di Chiana, halfway between Siena and Arezzo. It is known for the Tree of Love, a masterpiece of Gothic jewelry decorated with coral, enamel and rock crystal. Its streets and monuments make Lucignano a place that people should not miss on a tour of Tuscany.

14 – Castiglion Fiorentino (Arezzo)

Situated between Arezzo and Cortona, Castiglion Fiorentino origin dates back to the Etruscan period. The present appearance is a walled medieval town of the thirteenth century. The town is known for the towers that mark the boundary of the old city. The central Town Hall Square is the heart of the city where, under the arches built by Vasari, one can enjoy a splendid view over the Val di Chiana.

PROVINCE OF SIENA

15 – Casole d’Elsa (Siena)

Famous for its rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves Casole d’Elsa is at an altitude of 417m and has a population of about 3,000 inhabitants.

Visitors can enjoy a visit to the church of Santo Spirito and Palazzo Pretorio (old town hall), which is decorated with coats of terracotta from noble families throughout the centuries that have ruled the town. Other places of interest are Palacio Casolani – Berlingheri – Scheggi, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the church of San Pedro and San Nicolas.

16 – Castelnuovo Berardenga (Siena)

Castelnuovo Berardenga, situated near Siena, is a medieval village famous for its villas and the beautiful gardens. In fact, the city and its surrounding area breath charm, character and history. Castelnuovo Berardenga in the Chianti wine area is also an excellent starting point to explore this wine region of Tuscany.

17 – Cetona (Siena)

Between the Val di Chiana and Val d’Orcia close to the boarder with Lazio and Umbria is where travelers will find the town of Cetona. The town is a resort chosen for personalities from various fields to enjoy their vacation in complete tranquility and far from the main tourist routes.

18 – Chiusi (Siena)

Chiusi is a very small town in the southern province of Siena and has numerous places of interest among which are: an extraordinary necropolis, the labyrinth of Porsenna, and the NationalArchaeological Museum, which houses a treasure trove of Etruscan findings and Greek and Roman pottery.

The Etruscans of Chiusi worked a special type of ceramic, a ceramic called Bucchero that is very dark and imitates metal.

Chiusi Lake (located northeast of the city) is a perfect place for nature lovers and sport. Among the products of the earth, we must mention without a doubt the olive oil DOP Terre di Siena and the wine Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG, IGT Toscana.

19 – Montalcino (Siena)

The town of Montalcino, surrounded by ancient walls, dominates from the top of a hill of Val d’Orcia. Located a few kilometers from Pienza and the Crete Senesi, and not far from Mount Amiata, which is world renowned for its wine, the famous Brunello di Monatalcino.

A fairytale place ideal for a day immersed in the history of the Tuscan tale, this village boasts stunning views over the surrounding valleys.

20 – Montefollonico (Siena)

At the top of a lonely hill in front of Montepulciano, sits a picturesque medieval village in Tuscany: Montefollonico.

Its position away from the busy roads and the beaten track Montefollonico makes an especially charming and attractive village for a traveler. Located between the Val d’Orcia and the Val di Chiana, southeast of Siena, the city has ancient origins.

The name itself derives from the Latin word “fullones”, a name given by the Romans to the artisans working with fabric.

The town is well preserved and is surrounded by high walls and guarded by seven cylindrical towers that have remained unchanged over time, along with the beautiful Torre del Cassero, which dates back to the thirteenth-century. Also in perfect condition are the three main entrances of the city, the Palacio de Jusiticia and the thirtheenth-century church of San Leonardo. The old water cistern of the city, found on the main street, is really beautiful.

21 – Montepulciano (Siena)

Montepulicano is located south of Tuscany, in the province of Siena and is in a limestone hill 605 meters above sea level. It is world famous for its Vino Nobile, a wine of great excellence. In addition to wine there are many things worth visiting in Montepulciano starting with its squares, monuments and cathedrals. The city is known as “the jewel of the sixteenth century” thanks to its splendid typical architectural style of the Renaissance.

22 – Monteriggioni (Siena)

The history of Monteriggioni, a municipality in the province of Siena, has ancient origins. The walled city was built on a hill by the Sienese in the eighteenth-century to protect their defensive line against their historic rivals, the Florentines, who sought to expland their borders.

Considered one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Italy, Monteriggioni boasts magnificent walls of the majestic fourteen protruding towers.

Monteriggioni is important both architecturally and culturally and has been mentioned in the Inferno of DanteAlighieri’s Divine Comedy.

The town of Monteriggioni seems suspended in time. As you enter through one of two doors and you are in the heart of the village. The main square is called Piazza Roma (Rome Square) and there is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. The village is small and consists of wine shops, gun shops, medieval and small hotels and restaurants serving traditional Tuscan cuisine and wine of the area.

23 – Murlo (Siena)

Murlo is an ancient small medieval village in the Metallifere hills and near the river Crevole. In Murlo there are many monuments and historic buildings to visit; from the municipality, the castle and the Church of San Fortunato and Palazzone. The archaeological site of Poggio Civitate where they have unearthed many Etruscan remains very close by.

24 – Pienza (Siena)

Pienza is a small town located in the Vald’Orcia, in the southern part of Tuscany. It is only 15km from Montepulciano and 20km from Montalcino; two places worth visiting in this area. Known as one of the jewels of Italian Renaissance Pienza was built by architect Rossellino and financed by Pope Pius II of the Piccolomini family.

25 – Bagno Vignoni (Siena)

Immersed in the beautiful Val d’Orcia at the foot of Mount Amiata lies this small spa town. The village, perfectly preserved in its main square retails a large thermal bath which is not open to the public.

In the Posta Hotel located in the same village there is access to the hot springs (for a price), however, in the summer you can enjoy outdoor hot springs just outside the village.

26 – San Quirico D’Orcia (Siena)

Halfway between Pienza and Bagno Vignoni in one of the most beautiful roads in the whole of Tuscany is located the town of San Quirico D’Orcia. The village and others of the area retain a medieval appearance.

27 – Radda in Chianti (Siena)

Radda is the so-called “Triangle of Chianti”, comprising the municipalities of Castellina in Chianti, Radda in Chianti and Gaiole in Chianti. Chianti medieval village located in the centre of a beautiful hillside, Radda is an excellent base for exploring the Chianti area and its castles such as Brolio and Meleto.

28 – Radicofani (Siena)

In the south of the beautiful Natural Park of the Val d’Orcia boarder, one of the most impressive and spectacular medieval fortresses in all of Italy rises. For centuries, the imposing Fortress of Radiconfani has been the symbol of the defense and control of the Via Francigena, on the boarder between Tuscany and Lazio. Radicofani besides being of great military importance was also an obligatory stop for pilgrims and travelers.

This powerful fort was built in 978 AD, although its origins date back even further in time. Before climbing the tower I recommended a walk in the pine forest which surrounds the fortress, where you can see the remains of arches and wells partially hidden by vegetation at first sight.

The majestic tower of 37 meters high and rebuilt in the last century, boasts wonderful views across the park of Val d’Orcia and Mount Amiata.

The vast and overwhelming panorama can be classified as one of the most beautiful of Tuscany; the view tretches to the mountains of the Apennines, Lake Trasimeno and Lake Bolsena.

29 – San Gimignano (Siena)

San Gimignano needs no introduction. Known worldwide for its high towers is one of the most visited towns in Tuscany and all of Italy. In the Middle Ages, this city was defended by 72 towers, which only 15 of them are now preserved. These towers, a symbol of power of the wealthiest families of the city, are part of the UNESCO world heritage.

30 – Trequanda (Siena)

The medieval village of Trequanda is located in one the most pristine areas of the province of Siena and extends around a thirteenth-century castle. Trequanda is located on a hill, immersed in a natural setting of forests vineyards and olive groves.

The historic centre dominated by the splendid Romanesque church dedicated to St. Peter and St. Andrew was built in the thirteenth-century. The façade is of white stone slabs and inside there is a “Ascension” with frescoes by Giovanni di Paolo.

31 – San Casciano Bagni (Siena)

This town is of Etruscan origin and its name reflect the presence of hot springs (Italian for Bathrooms is Bagni. Legend has it that Porsenna, the Etruscan ruler of Chiusi, bathed in the hot springs. The thermal waters of San Casciano dei Bagni containing sulfur, calcium and fluoride, have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Through inhalation which works with the respiratory system with anti-inflammatory effects. They also have a ”peeling” effect on the skin.

PROVINCE OF MASSA

32 – Fosdinovo (Massa Carrara)

Fosdinovo is a town of Massa Carrara, located about 15 km northwest of Massa. Fosdinovo owes its importance in history of its natural location between the sea and the mountains, the village is a hotspot between ports and inland areas of the region.

Founded by the Romans significantly increased the shelf life of the area. Since the Middle Ages, Fosdinovo is strengthened thanks to the most powerful family in the Lunigiana Malaspina and even Dante, the great poet, lived for some time in Fosdinovo.

The opening to the sea was at the same time the fortune and misfortune of Fosdinovo: first the opportunity to earn money from trading, on the other hand, it was the front line in time of wars and struggles, including the two World Wars.

Fosdinovo is today a village rich in art and history that undoubtedly deserves a visit.

PROVINCE OF GROSSETO

33 – Massa Marittima (Grosseto)

Massa Marittima is a jewel of Tuscany. Beautiful city with panoramic views located just 50 km from Grosseto in southern Tuscany. The historic centre of the city is of Etruscan origin and many signs of the past are still recognizable in the perfectly preserved walls, the narrow streets and in urban and architectural complexes. The history of this place is strictly linked to mining because there are mines of iron, mercury, lignite and copper here.

34 – Pitigliano (Grosseto)

Pitigliano in the Maremma is hallway between Florence and Rome on top of a volcanic tuff. Its unmistakable profile makes it stand out kilometers away with its unique charm which is almost surreal. It is also known as Little Jerusalem (Piccola Gerusalemme) due to the presence throughout the history of an important Jewish community, Pitigliano has an interesting historical and cultural past.

35 – Sorano (Grosseto)

Sorano is a picturesque village situated on a hill slope hanging from tufa stone. Of Etruscan origin Sorano preserves a beautiful old town. Wandering through its streets and enjoying the beautiful views over the valley is definitely an experience that travelers should not miss.

And so far that’s all!

I tried to mention the most important towns and I apologize for missing some because I am certain there are more that are wort emphasizing.

Dear friends,

We are in September so I'll try to summarize the advantages and disadvantages (very few) of travelling during this month around Tuscany.

Advantages:

1 – Climate

September is probably the best month of the year, along with June, as regards to temperature. With a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 27 degrees Celsius this climate makes it extremely enjoyable to tour Tuscany during this month.

Below I have attached an annual table where you may see the minimum and maximum monthly average temperatures during the course of the year in Tuscany.

2 – Rainy Days

September is characterized by a period of very low rainfall, the average is only 6 days of rain during the entire month, which also tends to be concentrated towards the end of September. Pleasant temperatures and sunny days make September an ideal month to visit Tuscany.

Therefore, I will also provide a table with the forecast of rainfall per month/ year so that you can use this guide to plan for any other month.

3 – Hours of Daylight

The daylight hours are also an important factor to consider when planning a trip to Tuscany. September enjoys plenty of light; exactly 13 hours at the beginning of the month and 12 hours following the 17^th of September.

At the beginning of September the sunrises at 06:37 and the sunsets at 19:54 whereas towards the end of the month the sunrise is at 07:13 and sunset is at 18:58.

4 – Colours of the fields and nature

September is a month of changing hues during which the fields and the hills of Tuscany leave behind yellow fields of sunflowers and wheat of July and August to reach brown hues of ploughed fields and reddish discolouration of the vineyards (the latter is much more accentuated during the month of October).

With the imminence of autumn also brings the colour change to yellow in most other native plants.

5 – Holiday Homes and Hotels

The vast majority of tourists are concentrated in Tuscany during the month of August. Although September is not off-season it is definitely a month in which you can find better prices, greater availability and certainly some of the best deals. A holiday apartment in a small town can be a very economical solution to get to know the region at very affordable prices.

6 – Art Cities, Tourist Attractions and Restaurants

The great art cities such as Florence, Siena and Pisa are also much less crowded with tourists. You will be able to spend less time in queues and enjoy the artistic heritage of Tuscany with much more peace and quiet.

The restaurants also offer great availability and better service considering the lower influx of travellers.

Disadvantages

We really cannot say that there are any clear disadvantages whilst travelling to Tuscany during the month of September, with the exception that for most people in September means that they are returning to work and are unable to travel.

My journey through Tuscany

Dear Friends,

Today I will publish a letter from a reader of my blog that I think may be helpful to everyone:

"Hello Giorgio, we have just returned from a 5 day trip to Tuscany and after using your blog to help us navigate the area I thought I would share my travel experience´s with you.

After looking at many rural houses that can be found on various websites, we decided to trust your suggestion and we stayed at Villa Vignacce Annalicia.

The truth is that it was a huge success; the place is great and everything is perfectly maintained. I stayed in the apartment Granaio with my wife where we celebrated 10 years of marriage. Upon arrival we found a bottle of Italian sparkling wine (prosecco), some strawberries from the garden of the house, and a home-made dessert which we enjoyed with our breakfast.

Day 1:
You explained that May is a wonderful time to go to Tuscany and the truth is that the flower garden in Vignacce gave us a spectacular view every morning as well as the fields and the countryside around the house which was full of beautiful flowers.

The first day we where a little tired from traveling and so only in the afternoon we began exploring Tuscany, we decided to go to Lake Trasimeno which is just 20 minutes from Vignacce. We took our Fiat 500 and in less than half an hour we were enjoying an ice cream at the gelateria tropical Passignano sul Trasimeno.

From Passignano we took a boat that took us to the Isola Maggiore on Lake Trasimeno where we enjoyed a beautiful walk through the castle and admired a wonderful sunset. On the way back it was almost dinner time and so we stopped at a restaurant in a village called the Fischio del Merlo. We ate excellent pasta with black truffle and fish from the lake that was the best I have ever eaten; truly exquisite.

Day 2:
We woke up enjoying a spectacular sunrise from our room in Cortona which is just in front of the house, we showered, had breakfast at home and a good Italian coffee with cake made by Annalicia, we thanked her and her friendly dog Billy and we headed towards Florence.

We arrived in Florence in under an hour and parked in the Central Station. We had arranged time to dedicate the morning to visit the Uffizi museum while in the afternoon we walked through the main tourist attractions: the Ponte Vecchio, Il Palazzo Pitti, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza Santa Croce and obviously il Duomo. As for following your recommendations we stopped to eat at Restaurant Da Mario. Simply spectacular!

Late in the afternoon we were heading back to Bettolle but took the opportunity to stop at the Incisa-Valdarno Outlet" Mall" where obviously my wife could not resist the temptation to spend all our savings on a nice Gucci bag at 70% off!

As you can imagine we arrived at the Villa very tired after our amazing but long day and so we rested before a walk through the village of Bettolle, which is located just 5 minutes walk from the Betulia restaurant, here we had a excellent Bistecca alla Fiorentina!

Day 3:
The time is going so fast on our trip, yet we head out to enjoy a spectacular sunrise and with our umbrella in hand we visited San Gimignano. We wondered around the charming medieval town which was only an hour and a quarter away. Here we spent a couple of hours walking through it. Then it began to rain so we decided to take the car back towards Monteriggioni where we ate at Bar del Orso! excellent recommendation! Thanks Giorgio.

In the afternoon it was time to visit Siena where we visited the spectacular cathedral! I recommend everyone to pay the € 10 entry because it is really wonderful, we went to Piazza del Campo and then again back to the Bettolle direction.

At night we had dinner at Santorotto in Sinalunga, also an excellent restaurant where we ate some local cuisine (a pasta typical of the area) ragout!

Day 4:

In the morning it was a sunny day once again and so we headed to the nearby Valdorcia. From Bettolle Montepulciano the drive is wonderful! Just 20 minutes separating the two places yet there are an endless delight of landscapes amongst them.

This could be a postcard of Tuscany. Montepulciano desepcionó was a little change for us. The city has many ups and downs and to reach the Piazza Grande we got a little lost. After this we continued to drive towards Pienza and the scenery was even more beautiful. We could not help stop several times to take beautiful souvenir pictures of Tuscany.

Finally we got to Pienza, the city we loved right away and actually in our opinion deserves the nickname Renaissance jewel. Following your advice we ate at Il Chiostro di Pienza where a friendly waiter named Alfonso served us very beautifully. From the restaurant we enjoyed a magnificent view of the entire Valdoricia and Mount Amiata.

We later visited Montichiello, Bagno Vignoni and climbed back through San Quirico d'Orcia! It is really wonderful! I fully understand why the Tuscan people protect their heritage and environment so carefully because it is awe inspiring.

Day 5:

As with every morning we where warmly greeted by a friendly Annalisa and her playful dog Billy. We drove to Pisa with the feeling that we had missed several days to enjoy the pool and the garden of the house. We also missed out on a visit to Umbria which is really close and Annalicia had recommended to us to visit as well as other beautiful areas of Tuscany which we read about in your Blog.

We arrived at Pisa late in the morning and found traffic around Florence but still plenty of time to visit the beautiful Piazza dei Miracoli and its Leaning Tower. In the afternoon at 18:00 we left for the airport and our flight back home with a sense of sadness and returned home promising ourselves to return back soon and get to know and further enjoy this beautiful land that is Tuscany and Umbria.

The Tuscan countryside offers the perfect landscape for cycling because it has a number of routes for walking and these are all accompanied with incredible views.

In addition to this, the bicycle is a great means of transport for those who want a deeper experience of the Tuscan countryside as it introduces travellers to the region more closely.

Once cycling visitors can admire the wonderful views of the landscape in depth and are able to improvise as they go along, stopping to take a photo or for a bite to eat at a local restaurant.

The cycle experience will make for an unforgettable stay in Tuscany and it promises a real adventure for those of all abilities.

Tuscany is a unique place in the world where the beauty of the landscape, art, culture and cuisine come together in perfect harmony. From the Middle Ages Tuscany has accumulated centuries of diverse history and great artistic culture that we have a duty to safeguard and protect. Its unique environment and heritage has been preserved for generations and continues to remain un-spoilt to this day.

FLORENCE

From 1982 UNESCO introduced Florence to the list of World Heritage sites and today the list includes six areas and cities of Tuscany and the Villas and Gardens of the Medici .

PISA

The historic center of Pisa is yet another UNESCO site which was added to the list in 1987. In this town you can admire many works of art and amongst them are the world famous emblem of Italy; the leaning Tower of Pisa.

SAN GIMIGNANO

Since 1990 San Gimignano became part of the world heritage list. From its privileged position in the heart of Chianti this small walled city still retains many of its medieval towers. These where an expression of wealth and opulence for its merchants centuries ago. Rich and famous since the middle Ages the city preserves numerous works of art. Its location in the hills of Tuscany makes this place a must see on any trip to Tuscany.

SIENA

In 1995 the stunning Siena also became part of the group of sites protected by UNESCO. Siena, with its perfectly preserved historic center is definitely one of the cities of Tuscany and Italy that best preserves its cultural heritage. The city is also famous for the Palio horse competition that takes place twice a year at the main square, Piazza del Campo. PIENZA

The following year, in 1996 it was the turn of Pienza, a jewel of Italian Renaissance declared an "ideal Renaissance city" and built by Pope Piccolomini in 1459. It is said that the Pope almost had a fit when the architect Rosellino, designer of this very unique place gave him the bill. They also note that the Popes anger faded when he came to see the true beauty of the work upon completion. Are you curious to know Pienza? VALDORCIA

In 2004 it is the turn of the Valdorcia, which also happens to be considered as a World Heritage location and therefore a part of Unesco. The landscape of the Valdorcia is definitely the typical area that appears on most postcards of Tuscany. VILLE MEDICEE AND TWO GARDENS

Villa Medici became part of the UNESCO World Heritage organization in 2013 and consists of some 12 villas and 2 gardens built by the powerful Medici family. These villas were summer residences for hunting of one of the most powerful in Europe during the Renaissance and families today and still retain immensely and incalculable treasures of art. Today I will introduce an activity that is perfect for individuals that wish to soak in some mesmerizing landscapes and indulge in Tuscan cultural traditions at firsthand; the Via Francigena. Via Francigena is a route through the countryside ideal for nature lovers, hikers, and explorers. It is like the road to Santiago!

I will present below some detailed information concerning this exciting route so you will have a better representation of not just the path but also its history.

ORIGIN

Via Francigena was first discovered by the Archbishop of Caterbury. The use of this route was similar to the famous Camino de Santiago in Spain. Besides religious and pilgrimage purposes, the route was more or less used for individuals traveling to Rome.

The origin of this journey dates far back to the time of the Lombards who created a path to the old port of Luni and Tuscia. They created this path at a safe distance from the routes controlled by their implacable enemies- the Byzantines. Over time, this road became an important trade route and also the base of wealthy cities like Siena and Lucca.

ASPECTS OF THE PATH

Via Francigena runs through some major cities and towns of Tuscany and through this route, you can visit significant monuments like the Cathedral of Lucca or the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, and so on.

This path offers the opportunity to relive the past through the footsteps of ancient traders crossing beautiful Tuscan hills while acknowledging many towns and cities filled with artistic treasures. This exhilarating journey allows the traveler to not only feel disconnected by the surrounding nature but to also be educated by various cultural traditions between towns while consuming quality authentic food and wine.

STROLL WITHOUT HURRY

The journey passes through the valleys of Tuscany between Altopascio and Fuccechio where the Arno River crosses. This path leads you through the old town of San Miniato then through the Val d’Elsa known for its rolling hills and cultivated land filled with olive trees and vineyards. The walk passes through the medieval town of San Gimignano which then passes through Siena along the white roads of Val d’Arbia that connects to the city of Val d’Orcia Buonconvento. Finally, this captivating route will bring you to the fortified medieval village of San Quirico.

Overall, the Via Francigena is not just a path to take, but it is an experience for both religious individuals and for individuals seeking for an enriching journey filled with history, culture, and natural surroundings that sparks all your senses.

Tuscany Markets

Dear Friends,

Today I will discuss one of the many activities to do when you travel to Tuscany; Tuscany Markets. Personally, I find this very fascinating and I think you will like it as well. Similar to many parts of the word, these markets are held regularly in different cities and towns of Tuscany exhibiting different themes of endless products.

Markets are certainly a wonderful way of depicting culture and traditions represented by each area through all kinds of handicrafts, art, souvenirs, jewelry, flowers, traditional food, etc. Moreover, the surrounding ambiance is another key factor that contributes to the success of these markets. It is always a pleasure just to simply admire the festive environment filled with an atmosphere that captures all your senses.

Here are a few markets that are held in major cities of Tuscany and that you can include in your travel route:

1. Markets in Lucca

The Mercato dell 'Antiquario is held in the old part of the city on the third Saturday of each month, and it is where you will find mostly antiques and decorative items. This market takes place in the urban core of the city through medieval streets and squares that brings out its cultural feel.

2. Markets in Siena

The Mercato San Giuseppe is held every Wednesday morning from 8.30 to 13.30 and it fills the streets around the fortress with numerous shelves where you can find clothes, decorative objects, fruits, vegetables, etc.

In the same town an antique market, much like the first (dell 'Antiquariato) is also present on the third Sunday of each month. Furthermore, this city offers annual markets commemorating Santa Lucia (December 13) that is a truly wonderful celebration.

3. Markets in Florence

This city captures some of my favorite markets! The first to name is the Mercato delle Cascine, the largest market in Florence. This all day event runs every Tuesday in the Parco delle Cascine, a park that extends through part of Florence. This market offers all kinds of items ranging from food to souvenirs to electronics.

If you are looking for a particular item that encompasses memories of the city, I would propose you to take a look at delle “Pulci” trail located in Piazza dei Ciompi. This market is open every day from 9 in the morning until 19:30 in the evening. The best day to visit this lovely market is the last Sunday of each month where you can find a wider range of goods from furniture to jewellery, clothing, music, and so on.

Lastly, my favorite market of Tuscany is the Christmas market in Florence. This joyful festival located in S. Crocce Piazza runs from early December until Christmas Eve, the 24^th. Like most Christmas markets, you can find plenty holiday goodies from delicious sweets to festive decorations.

The beach in Monte Argentario - Porto Santo Stefano

Hello Friends,

One common discussion that rises during trip planning to Tuscany in the summertime is the contemplation between Tuscany’s inland countryside and the coastal beach areas. As Tuscany is known for its rural landscapes, lush hills, and medieval villages, its beautiful coastlines are often forgotten.

Tuscany is comprised of many mesmerizing beaches but today we will focus on Monte Argentario, a highly recommended region that is truly breathtaking. Personally, my favorite Tuscan beach is located on the island of Elba (The Paolina) in Porto Santo Stefano.

Porto Santo Stefano is part of Monte Argentario in southern Tuscany and it undoubtedly offers some of the best beaches in the region. In my opinion, Cala Gelso is one of the most enchanting beaches among the many coves and beaches in the area accentuated by the pure majestic beauty of crystal clear waters. These enticing coves and beaches can be accessed along a scenic route around the peninsula of Argentario where one can soak in the captivating ocean view en-route to your desired beach. Although the way to the beaches is not the most convenient route, I assure you that it’s worth the walk!

Four hidden gems around Siena

Tuscany is an highly iconic region, Florentine sculptures, medieval walled villages, hilly lunar
landscapes and flowered balconies. A constant stream of visitors captured those iconic images and posted on sketches, books, videos, blogs and other media.
Still, even if we live in an era where all the information is accessible and every place can be easily geolocated, measured and digitally explored, there are some places that have been spared by this mayhem.
Lucignano d’Asso, placed in on the hill aside the river Asso valley at short distance (40 min) from Siena. Once entirely belonging to an aristocratic family , this village is now a hideaway for few lucky residents and some visitors that can rent one of the houses. It is definitely worthy a visit especially if you are coming from Pienza along the long gravel road crossing the most pristine landscapes of Tuscany

Montefollonico, once a walled castle extreme outpost of Siena Republic facing the enemy town of Montepulciano under the Florentine dukes. In fact the view of the renaissance town of Montepulciano from Montefollonico is outstanding and virtually unchanged since early 1500.

San Gusme’ another hidden gem within Siena surrounding. Coming from south (Rome) and heading
Florence through the Chianti wine region, San Gusme’ is one of the first villages we found entering the celabrated area. This village could fit in one of the Disney park as it could be the background of a fairy tale.

Lucignano in Valdichiana not to be confused with the first one is formally under Arezzo province but easily accessible from Siena and conveniently located close by the main highways system. its historic center has been miraculously preserved from alteration giving the entire village a consistent mediaeval look but this is not the only reason you should indulge in a stroll or a cappuccino in one of the few terraces. In Lucignano there was found an interesting and mysterious artefact. A small tree covered in gold leaves and decorated with the finest goldsmith made by talented artists some 500 years ago. Popular legends call it the Tree of Love and attributes special power in preserving love within couples and newly married.

Badia a Passignano

Dear Friends,

I just returned from visiting the wonderful Badia a Passignano, located in the Chianti region. Badia a Passignano is an impressive monastery complex found in the eleventh century, just a short distance from Montefioralle and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The Abbey belongs to the order of Vallombrosa, a Benedictine congregation. The monks of Vallombrosa live a strict lifestyle dedicated to worship. Their intellectual qualities were distinct and for centuries, they were devoted to study various branches of science, oriental languages, music and literature.

Galileo Galilei is a perfect example. Galileo began his scientific training at a young age in the Abbey of Vallombrosa. He then later returned to visit his past teachers and at the same time to contribute his time in teaching the young monks during the academic year of 1587-8.

Its founder, San Giovanni Gualberto, came from a noble family but would not be more than a monk as he did not want to achieve a prominent place in society.

In 1049, construction of the monastery began. Over time, the neighboring castle and the adjacent buildings became part of the monastery. This huge religious complex is portrayed as a square castle with a tower at each corner.

The beautiful Abbey has a wide road that is surrounded by cypress trees that leads to the majestic inner courtyard. The lovely courtyard has an open atrium that further leads to the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, built in the thirteenth century which was later restored. The well kept Church has maintained all its medieval features along with its high slender steeple. The interior has a semicircular apse of a dome that was completely frescoed by Antonio Fabbrini and Antonio Donati.

In the sixteenth century, Fray Michele Confetto, a scholar of oriental languages, recorded the wooden choir stalls with inscriptions in Greek and Hebrew.

Furthermore, the Church has retained magnificent works of art, such as the “Trinity” by Lorenzo Lippi located on the high altar. There is also a majestic organ made in the beginning of the 19th century by the Tronci of Pistoia. There are three splendid interior chapels of the church that holds many outstanding works such as “The Conversion of St. Paul” by Cesare Dandini in the 17th century or even the classy marble floor in the “Chapel of the Ten Holy Souls”. The vestry, which in itself is already a work of art, has a portrait of San Giovanni Gualberto, a work done by Raffaellino del Garbo in the 16th century and a terracotta by Della Robbia.

On the opposite side of the church, there is an access road that leads to the monastery. Through the main entrance, visitors will see a square yard that encompasses a medieval appearance with two impressive towers. Personally, this imagery is almost impossible to imagine and this entrance leads you to the Monastery.

The captivating Monastery has a tower constructed from the 15th century with two cloisters: the “Cloister of Mascherone” and “Cloister della Meridiana”.

The main structures of the Monastery are: the enormous library filled with valuable old books, the Chapter House, the large dining hall, and the famous well preserved art collection of the Abbey- “The Last Supper”, a masterpiece by the two brothers, Domenico and Andrea Ghirlandaio, and also the terracotta by Santi Bouillon.

In 1986, after more than 100 years of secularization of the Abbey, the monks of Vallombrosa returned to integrate. Currently, it is a small community composed of about 40 monks.

The Abbey can be visited only on Sundays. After or before visiting, visitors can plan a picnic on the lovely field, or, there is an excellent and unique restaurant that is located very close to the Abbey- the “Osteria di Passignano”.

This lovely restuarant holds the reputation as one of the best restaurants in the Chianti region. The kitchen is of Tuscan tradition but it is meals are prepared creatively with top notch local ingredients. From my personal experience, I started the meal with a mushroom cream cheese which was fine and aromatic. I then proceeded the course with a baked pheasant pechuguitas aderazadas with a Chianti wine sauce which were a true delicacy. All washed down with one of his own red cultivation and production: "Marchesi di Antinori" designation of origin of Chianti Classico. The wine was simply spectacular. To finish the course, I had a delicate and smooth "tiramisu" that was homemade as with all desserts.

What a nice and relaxing day I had, it was much needed.

Barga; one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany

Situated on the hill between Lucca and Remeggio Garfagnana is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy- the village of Barga. Not far from Barga is a village known as Castelvecchio where the Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli purchased Villa Cardosi Carrara. Through the inspiration of the tolling bells from Collegiate Church of St. Christopher, he wrote "Time for Barga", a composition of well known songs of Castelvecchio.

Through archaeological findings, it is evident that the Barga region was inhabited during the prehistoric times. Ancient settlements of the Ligurians was apparent, then conquered by the Romans and finally by the Lombard where in the tenth century built the first fort in the village. During the course of the eleventh century, several manors were altered until the powerful Lucca took control of the village.

Despite many attempts to revolt, under the dominance of Lucca the city experienced significant economic development. In 1272, Barghesano di Bonaventura invented the spinning wheel for silk which helped increase trade activity in the area.

Many traders began arriving in Barga and Lucca due to the growing production of silk. This lead to an increase in taxes on all imported goods which ultimately lead to the downfall of Lucca in 1298. In 1316, Barga was restored through Castruccio Castracane whom invested in the reconstruction of the town. During the middle ages, the town faced constant siege caused by Pisa and Lucca until 1341 when it voluntarily joined the Florentine Republic and was eventually annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Sightseeing in Barga

The most significant building in Barga is the Saint Christopher Cathedral. This original building, prior to modifications, dates all the way back to before the year 1,000. This cathedral has an architectural style and decorative elements that range from a Romanesque to a Gothic appreciation.

The Arringo is the meadow that lies between the Cathedral and the Praetorian Palace, where the medieval community meetings were held. From the Saint Christopher cathedral you can enjoy a captivating panoramic view of the Apennines, Pizzorne mountains, and the Apuan Alps.

The Church of the Holy Cross is the oldest building after the Cathedral. Although the original building was constructed in the thirteenth century, the current facade is from the sixteenth century. Other buildings and places of interest are: the Academy of St. Elizabeth (the former Convent of the Poor Clares which is now used as a nursing home), the Church of the Annunciation, Puerta Real, Puerta Macchiaia, and the Tea.

As previously mentioned at the beginning of Article l, the Pascoli House or Villa Carrara Cardosi is recommended for visit and it is about 5 km away from Barga. This building still contains furniture, a library, and manuscripts that previously belonged to the poet. In this beautiful friendly village is also the chapel where the poet was buried along with his sister Mary. The home of the past poet is open to the public every day except on the mornings of Mondays and Tuesdays. The Tuscan Blossom

Dear Friends,

As you all know Tuscany as famous for its cities filled with art history, its authentic and delicious cuisine, its elegant wine, but Tuscany is also famous for its stunning landscapes. Thus, I dedicate this article to the plants and flowers that you will find if you visit Tuscany in spring.

Beginning of spring (March)

In this period, the landscape is characterized by intense colors where brown trees that have not bloomed are contrasted with the green of the wheat plants and the green fields that grow after the winter rain.

The plants that you will find in this period are blooming primroses, tulips and violets. On a walk through the forest you will also find mushrooms that have grown after a few days of rain during the sunny days.

March is a lovely time to visit Tuscany mainly because of the low number of tourists during this month.

Spring (April)

In this period many plants and flowers bloom, it is the awakening of nature after winter. April is a month of strong color contrasts. A multitude of plants and fruit trees that sprout during this period, such as cherry trees.

The days are becoming warmer but also can produce the last snowfall of the season. If you are not traveling during Easter, April is usually a food month for both daylight hours and for the lower prices of accommodation and the few number of tourists.

End of spring (May)

This is definitely the best time to see Tuscany at its best, the colors of the fields no longer contrasted with plants that have bloomed and all the plain is a harmony of colors. The days are long and sunlight is especially beautiful at dawn and dusk as they are more reddish and warm.

In the fields of wheat flourish alongside poppies and the beautiful contrast of the fields where the intense green of the wheat plant is mixed with red poppies. Also flourishing in this period are Fritillary saxatilis, the yellow plants that are very much appreciated (see photo).

Today we will discuss the 5 major events or holidays in Tuscany that are worth the trip to visit and enjoy.

Palio di Siena

It is no doubt that Palio di Siena is the most beautiful and spectacular event held in the region of Tuscany and you really have to experience it at least once in your life. The Palio is an event organized for tourism: it is a popular festival that has been endured by the people of Siena for quite some time. Its origins are truly ancient where rules and regulations have been created since 1644, the year in which the first Palio course with horses were kept. In 1729, the governor, Violante of Bavaria, defined formal boundaries in which the city was divided into seventeen districts. Each district is a small state, governed by a Prior and a captain and are assisted by two or three people in each neighborhood called "Mangini." Each territory has its church with an adjoining office where the trophies are kept. The Palio is a competition between these 17 neighborhoods where each neighborhood is represented by a rider. The riders race each other around the village square from 10 to 10 in two annual competitions that take place on July 2 and August 16. Il Calcio Fiorentino

Similar to the medieval and Renaissance chivalry-like orders, the Moral Code Calcio Fiorentino follows the route of moral integrity of the Warriors and the Medieval Knights. This event is held every June 24 on the day of San Juan in the city of Florence. The Calcio Histórico is the Palio of Siena as a tradition in medieval origins which still retains old rules and is certainly one of the most spectacular events in Florence. Il Saracino

La Giostra del Saracino is the most important festival in the city of Arezzo. The event was originated in the Middle ages and today it takes place twice a year: the second Saturday of June during the evening (Giostra di San Donato) and the first Sunday of September during the daytime (Giostra della Madonna del Conforto). The competition attracts thousands of visitors that are fascinated by the historical parade.
Hundreds of people participate in this parade and are dressed in medieval costumes with dozens of horses marked by the sound of trumpets along with the movements of the flags. Through the activities of the different districts of the city, Il Saracino maintains a tradition that has persisted for centuries where the colors of each neighborhood enforces the spirit of identity and belonging. Festa Medievale di Monteriggioni

Another interesting event that is held every year is only a few kilometers from Siena. The event takes place at the castle of Monteriggioni, where it is decorated for the holidays of the lords and commoners.

During the event you will find many participants such as magicians, jugglers, acrobats, theatrical and improvisational rhyming, noble maidens, contortionists, snake charmers, and the highly recognized folk traditional artists of Tuscany. There is also a space inspired by the Middle Ages for children in addition to countless other fantastic surprises.

La Fioritura di Castelluccio

Although Castelluccio is located in Umbria and not Tuscany, the Fioritura party is an event of incredible beauty that is far worth watching. Castelluccio is located in a valley between Umbria and Marche where it is completely surrounded by mountains. Dear Friends,

June is on its way and soon we will be in the month that from my point of view is without any doubt the best one to go visit Tuscany.

The reasons why I consider June as the best period to go are the following:

1 – The month June has for sure the longest day of the year and with more sunny hours. The sun rise up at 4:30 am and the sunset is around 9:30 pm. Having a lot of sunny hours while you travel is without any question helping to enjoy your journey at the finest.

2 – The temperatures are excellent. During the month of June are registered the warmest day with minimum temperature of 16 degree Celsius to a maximum heat of 28. Obviously the closer we get to the end of the month, the warmer the temperature go since we are getting to the pick of summer. Having moderate temperature is definitely nice and ideal for going through the cities of Tuscany weather.

3 - Rainfall may be present early in the month but are usually decreasing as we approach mid-month because in this period usually enter the Azores anticyclone and usually stays all summer ensuring hot sunny days.

4 - Another reason why I consider June the best month of the year to visit Tuscany is because of the low tourist inflow recorded during this month of the year. June is a month where even during the working days you can enjoy our cities of art without having to suffer of the usual large tourist crowds present in July and August. Thus you can enjoy museums without queuing too. If you want to visit the Uffizi Museum and the Academy of Florence, it is advisable to book your ticket and entry time via internet to avoid long queues.

5 - Another great advantage of traveling in June is to be able to enjoy more affordable prices. June is considered as middle season and many hotels still offer relatively inexpensive alternative to travel during this month of the year. The tickets are also usually much cheaper than in July or August.

6 - Finally I personally

find that June is the most beautiful month of the year thank to its colors. A trip to Tuscany is not only a trip to the cities of art but also a journey through beautiful landscapes. During the months of June the strong colors of spring leave the landscape to give space for the sweeter color of this season. The green wheat fields are mixed with red poppies as well as other flowers and make June the most spectacular month for its colors.

In Tuscany there are hundreds of small hotels or villas where you can sleep for a reasonable price, I personally know very well Villa Vignacce which is a country house divided into apartments with pool. The house has only 3 apartments and is almost always full so I would advise you if you like this villa to contact the owner well in advance.

On another side, you will find many portals on the internet who offered houses, but the one I highly recommend as they have very charming villa is YourTuscanVilla. This company does a selection of nice villas and help to find the perfect home for a charming holiday.

4 – Which restaurants would you advise me to go to?

In Tuscany, you will have a nice meal in almost every restaurant you will go to as long as you avoid the very touristic restaurants on the main cities. I have my personal selection of the 5 best restaurants in Tuscany.

After some of you have asked me to give advice on routes to do in Tuscany, I have decided to post this article where I suggest you an itinerary for one week in Tuscany that will give you a chance to see some of the best places of our wonderful region.

I will divide the itinerary by days but obviously depending on where you are in Tuscany routes there will be more comfortable one than others, depending on the distances per day.

1- Florence

Florence is the capital of Tuscany and an essential stop. To know what to do, you can read the following article regarding what to visit when you are in Florence for a day

2- Siena y San Gimignano

With their proximity those two cities are worth seeing together. In Siena, you should not miss to visit to wonderful Duomo (Cathedral of Siena) one of the most beautiful in Italy and therefore in the world. It is worth to go even if it costs 10 EUR because its beauty lies especially in the works of art that is inside of the cathedral.

Another must see in Siena is the Piazza del Campo, the famous places where they organize the city festivals twice during the summer: The Palio. If you have time I would advise you to climb to the top of the Torre del Mangia from where you can admire one of the most beautiful panoramas of the city.

3-Pienza, Montepulciano and Bagno Vignoni.

Concerning these three locations that are very close at a geographic level, we have talked a lot too, for more information on each visit the links.

4-Montalcino y Volterra.

These two villages also deserve a visit, the first for their wineries and stunning Abbey Sant'Antimo a few kilometers from the village, and the second for its great Etruscan ruins.

5-Cortona y Arezzo.

The first is famous because the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" was filmed in Cortona and its international cultural festival "Tuscan Sun Festival" which takes place during the month of August, while Arezzo is famous for its beautiful churches and museums, and the scene of many of the scenes from the movie "La Vita e 'Bella".

6- Pisa y Lucca.

The first is famous for the Leaning Tower and the second very famous for having some of the most beautiful places in Italy.

7- A walk through the Chianti: Castillo de Brolio , San Gusme , Tavernelle Val di Pesa

Passing through Cortona

A few weeks ago I talked about the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” and its close relationship with the beautiful city of Cortona, a city that I can describe only by superlatives adjectives for how beautiful it is.

Cortona captivated me from the first day I saw her, probably because it was a sunny winter morning and I remember as if it was today (it's been five long years ...) the smell of burning wood that blended neatly with the stove where some expert hands began to prepare some specialties of the area.

Cortona has been a tourist destination since travelers began to discover the beautiful Tuscan countryside and were seduced by this unique city built on a buttress of Mount S. Egidio. Numerous legends are told about its foundation, so that today it does not seem to be questioned by any sources that this is a city founded by the Etruscans.

For those of you are going to visit Tuscany this summer do not miss the chance to visit this lovely city, count on the great advantage of not being too big if your organize well your visit time throughout the day (maybe a couple of days) and whether or if you don’t fency visiting so much, you will always be able to enjoy not only the beauty of the place but the beautiful panoramas. Among the main places that you have to visit is the Duomo (Cathedral of Cortona), the Church of San Francesco and Santa Maria delle Grazie the Calcinaio (the Sienese architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini). It is also a "must" to visit the Palazzo Comunale and Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the Diocesan.

Also you have to get to the highest part of the city and go the fantastic balcony that opens on the unique landscape of the Val di Chiana from Cortona. Also you will enjoy spectacular views of the Val d'Orcia, Lake Trasimeno and the Amiata Mountains and Cetina .

If the time allows it, and uniting culture to pleasure,you may have the time for shopping in small shops in the city where you will find from top brand clothing to marvellous craft shop where you will find the most beautiful notebooks, diaries , books, worked in leather and can cost (as happened to me) half of your vacation budget on them.

If your tour program gives you the opportunities to get close to Cortona from the 2 to the 10 August you will doubly fortunate to enjoy one of the most anticipated musical events of the year, in the panorama of classical music. In those days there will be the Festival del Sole. A music event that will bring together the best classical orchestras internationally, and has program in concerts of chamber music, violin and piano. Photographic exhibitions as well as literary events are also held.

One last tip to regain strength ... two of the restaurants in town that will surely go out of more than pleased: La Locanda del loggiato in full square of Cortona and the Hosteria del Teatro.
