Position: Project Associate / Project Coordinator for Electronic Surveying and Information Technology (IT)

IPA’s WASH Benefits Project is a five year study to evaluate the health benefits of sanitation, hygiene, household water treatment and nutrition using a large-scale, randomized evaluation that will take place in Western Province.

We are currently seeking a Project Associate or Project Coordinator (title to be determined by experience and qualifications of selected candidate) to manage all IT-related aspects of the WASH Benefits project, primarily focusing on computer-assisted interviewing (CAI) for field surveys.

Other relevant project components include: hardware and software support for digital data collection in the field, database architecture and maintenance, and SMS communication and surveying with study promoters and participants.

The position will be based in Kakamega, but will require frequent travel to project offices in Bungoma and accompaniment of field survey teams into some rural areas.

The PA/PC will work closely with the WASH Benefits management team, including Project Coordinators (PCs), Project Associates (PAs), and Project Managers. The PA/PC may also periodically work or coordinate with the IPA-Kenya headquarters’ IT and Data personnel.

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

Digital Data Collection

Serve as primary liaison between WASH Benefits survey management staff and IPA support personnel in New Haven, USA, as well as any IT or programming consultants retained by the project
Compile and maintain organized documentation for all programming and electronic surveying activities
Contribute to survey programming, testing, and debugging in Blaise software package
Liaise with IPA support personnel to format and/or create hard disk image for hardware devices to maximize survey capabilities and efficiency
Assist in development of manual and trainings for proper hardware usage and maintenance
Train field survey staff in proper use of survey devices and software and provide survey teams with ongoing feedback
Assist with organization of data quality checks
Organize and streamline the process of retrieving data from collection devices, storing in a secure database, and facilitating upload into STATA analysis software
Provide technical support and troubleshoot any hardware or software issues arising in the course of digital data collection

Database Management

Set up and maintain an organized, efficient, and secure database for all pilot and project data
Ensure proper encryption and storage procedures are followed with regard to all personal identifying data
Help coordinate consistent database design, maintenance, and access issues with project collaborators in the United States and Bangladesh SMS Communication System
Work with WASH management staff to oversee an existing system for SMS communication and MPESA payments to community intervention assistants

General

Provide general technical support and troubleshooting assistance for the WASH management team
Research and make recommendations on any computer-related project purchases

Qualifications:

Terms of Reference: Climate Change Adaptation among Pastoralists of Tana River Project Baseline Survey

Introduction and Background
The effects of climate change are here with us and their evidence is prominent. The same sentiments are echoed in the National Climate Change Response Strategy that “the evidence of climate change in Kenya is unmistakable’’. Temperatures have become risen throughout the country.

Rainfall has become irregular and unpredictable and when it rains, down pour is more intense. Currently, 80% of Kenya is Arid and Semi Arid Lands and by extension most of her population depend on these lands for livelihood support. Kenya also derives over 40% of her GDP from the environment and natural resource based sectors such as agriculture, energy, forestry, tourism and water.
Climate change is expected to exacerbate the already serious challenges to food security and economic development, especially on the rural agriculture dependent populations that are already struggling to meet challenges posed by existing climatic variability (IPPC, 2007).
Climate change and rainfall patterns already have significant impacts on agricultural productivity (for instance, increased occurrences of crop failures, low yields, extreme temperatures, etc). Most climate modelling scenarios indicate that the ASALs of Kenya, for instance, will be severely affected by droughts and high temperatures in the years to come. A greater frequency of droughts and flash floods has already been observed in recent years.
In response the government of Kenya in 2010 formulated and adopted a National Climate Change Response Strategy for Kenya. This provides a road map for proposed and ongoing adaptation and mitigation strategies. However, the marginalised communities like pastoralists could be left behind in this noble process.
Therefore it is imperative for a people driven approach to climate change adaptation and mitigation. The project intends to address policy gaps as evident in the National climate change response strategy.
Project Description
In view of the above, TPF implements this project in Tana Delta District and covers Garsen, Tarasaa and Kipini Divisions.
In total at the local level, the project covers 15 administrative locations and 32 Sub – locations.
The overall project objective is to enhance the understanding and ability of communities to participate in climate change adaptation and mitigation through awareness creation, advocacy and lobbying. The project duration is 24 months.
Overall Project Goal: The overall project goal is to enhance capacities of Tana pastoralist communities to cope with impacts of climate change.
Objectives of the project

Objective 1: To increase the participation of pastoralist communities in the adaptation to climate change for sustainable development in Tana Delta District.
Objective 2: Creating linkages with relevant institutions that will promote resilience on climate change among communities within Tana Region.
Objective of the baseline
The main objective of the baseline study is to provide reliable baseline information on climate change adaptation, impacts on livelihoods for the target localities in the regional administrations which will be used as benchmarks against which changes and progress of achievements can be measured and evaluated using verifiable indicators presented in the logical framework during the project implementation phase.
Scope of work and methodology
The consultant shall carry out the following activities:
Activity 1 – Revision, design and field test of the base line survey instrument:

Review of key documents, logic model, project proposal, etc
Consultation with local partners and TPF on survey plans
Preparation of draft instrument
Final draft of the instrument for the survey, translation, field test and adjustments.
Consultation with TPF staff on modifications to the survey instrument before and after field testing.

Activity 2A – Sampling:

Design sampling strategy based methodology
Calculate sample size agreed-upon methodologies
Conduct sampling
Include the above in the final report to TPF

Activity 2B– Plan, design, and implement training of enumerators and supervisors:

Recruitment of sufficient number of enumerators.
Preparation of training plan, field work protocols according to agreed methodologies.
Implementation of training for enumerators including responsibility for logistics – venue, snacks, equipment, etc.
Creation of the data entry plan entry, cleaning, and analysis.
Discussion with local partners and CIP/Staff.

Activity 3– Implement and supervise field data collection, data input and cleaning:

Coordination with TPF staff
Preparation of materials and equipment
Notification to partners and communities
Deployment of enumerators to the field.
Conduct data processing: (1) primary processing , comparison and validation of files, clean files, tabulations

Activity 4 – Analyze and synthesize data; and prepare report

Preparation of initial results in output tables.
Discussion with TPF on initial results
Data analysis and synthesis.
Revision of impact indicators and discussion
Report preparation in English

Activity 5 – Conduct final presentation.

Qualification and Technical Competencies

A degree in Environmental Management and/or related fields with bias in project planning and management, monitoring and evaluation or community development.
Knowledgeable in climate change adaptation and mitigation advocacy.
Having good understanding and clear knowledge of environmental planning and management (especially climate change).

Experience

Extensive knowledge and at least 5 years’ development experience on environmental management or related issues.
At least 5 years of comparative experience at progressively senior levels in the design, planning and implementation of projects, especially those associated with environmental protection and management.
Excellent communication skills (written & oral English) are an essential requirement.
Sound analytic and technical competence in analyzing and proffering solutions to environmental problems.
Knowledge of the Tana River County particularly the communities’ resident there.

Job Summary
The Senior Manager Retail will be responsible for growth of the Bank’s Retail Business across all branches. The position will also be responsible for coordination of sales and marketing efforts and service delivery across the country.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement the Bank’s Retail Business strategies in line with the overall strategic plan;
Prepare yearly retail budgets for approval by the Board;
Set targets for branches and monitor performance providing the necessary support;
Monitor set performance targets and assist with corrective action;
Ensure excellent service delivery by branches and take up service delivery issues with Customer Service Manager;
Assist Branch Managers in identifying target markets and exploring new opportunities to generate business;
Effective management of the branch network to achieve targets in deposits, financing and ensure efficient service delivery;
Lead and develop retail team.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field;
Diploma in sales & marketing will be an added advantage;
Minimum of 5 years experience, 3 of which should have been in a business development role, such as branch manager;
Strong analytical, problem solving, communication, negotiating and leadership skills;
Commercial awareness.

Reports to: Marketing Manager
Location: Nairobi with frequent travel to field offices
The Agency Manager will provide leadership to ensure that corporate marketing strategies are implemented in a profitable manner. He/she will ensure that there is adequate capacity to drive the sales activities of the direct sales personnel.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Implementation of marketing strategies aimed at achieving the projected production and market share.
Ensure the Agency has adequate capacity through recruitment, selection, motivation supervision, training, development and management of the Unit Managers and Agents  To achieve production, sales force growth, and expense objectives for the Agency force.
Establish training and development guidelines for Agents and Units Managers in accordance with established business plans.
Ensure maximum utilization and accountability of all available company resources in all areas of management, administration and development of the Agency.
Prepare and transmit periodic reports to the Marketing manager.

Experience and Qualifications

A University graduate in a relevant area of business, insurance or marketing. An MBA would be an added advantage.
Have seven (7) years experience in the insurance/financial services sector, three of which should be at the managerial level.
Track record of dealing with motor and non motor insurance business.
Possess strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
Proven experience at leading teams to achieve sales targets.
Self driven individual with impeccable integrity.

Position Ref MKT/1/12

Location: Within Kenya
The person takes charge of the Company’s branch office to ensure the office runs efficiently; coordinates and supervises the branch team within his/her jurisdiction; drives the marketing, Sales and customer service functions in the designated branch; and ensures that the Company’s key performance measures are properly understood and monitored.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Ensure premium payment for direct business and/or business introduced by intermediaries are accepted strictly on “cash” basis.
Ensure that all cash premiums are receipted, policyholder accounts properly updated and banking efficiently undertaken daily.
Ensure that yearly business acquisition targets for each individual Marketing Executive are met through strict monitoring and measurement of performance activities, using the tools provided by the Company
Ensure customers’ service standards are met in the primary focus areas namely, market identification, acquisition, retention and growth
Design and implement marketing and sales planning, goal setting and targeting strategies
Identify, target and penetrate niche markets through brokers, agents and direct clients
