MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

When Angie happens upon her best friend and her boyfriend the night of prom, all hell breaks loose. Lizzie, known as the Ice Queen, for being untouchable in their social circle of entitled, popular cheerleader- sport star set, becomes the victim of bullying, led by Angie. When Lizzie commits suicide soon after, Angie's anger turns to guilt. When the word "slut" appears on Lizzie's locker and soon reappears again in what seems to be Lizzie's script, Angie becomes determined to find out exactly why Lizzie ended her life. Parts of Lizzie's diary also are being circulated, pointing out the culprits that lead Lizzie to become so depressed that she can see no other way out.

This is part mystery, part social commentary, as Angie tries to pin down who is spreading Lizzie's diary around the school. We also get to know Lizzie a bit more through these little insights. The uncovers a horrible truth about surviving high school with all of the twists and turns of bullying and mean girls. Although the picture painted is pretty bleak, the author does offer some hope for those who feel they are different. This is really a heartfelt read and speaks to an important problem that teens face today. Parents: mentions of alcohol, suicide and as well as some sexual situations.

PAGE MORGAN has been fascinated with les grotesques ever since she came across an old, black-and-white photograph of a Notre Dame gargoyle keeping watch over the city of Paris. MY THOUGHTS

LOVED IT

Ingrid Waverly has embarrassed herself and her family when the boy she expects to propose asks her best friend instead at a large party. When her friend's house catches on fire, she thinks it is because she knocks over a candelabra. At the same time, her brother has been banished from London by their father and by luck, her mother decides now is the opportune time to open an art house in Paris. So, with her younger sister, Gabby, the family leaves England for France to the former site of an Abbey that her brother thinks would be an excellent location for the gallery. Then things start to get really strange when her brother is missing and girls start disappearing as well. As Ingrid starts to unravel exactly what happened to her brother, she stumbles on angels, demons and a few creatures in between. Her younger sister, Gabby is a breath of fresh air and being the younger won't stand for being pushed into the background. Ingrid and her sister are no damsels in distress, they won't back down.

As they get closer to finding their brother, they find themselves in danger. Ingrid soon discovers, the Rectory they have moved to is surrounded by gargoyles which provide more protection than the myth would have you believe. When Ingrid realizes that she has her own personal guardian gargoyle in the form of a hot guy named Luc ,the sparks really fly. There is of course a human side of good that are fighting the demons, the Alliance, which tolerates the gargoyles, but believes them less than humans. The first hundred pages are mostly set up for the stories to come. The last part of the book is really a page turner and non stop action.

I adore Gothic tales and this one is especially a treat since it has a really hot hero mixed with a young woman that doesn't take no for an answer. If you enjoy historical paranormal mystery with some really wonderful characters this has all the set up for a wonderful series. I haven't read a decent story with gargoyles since Shanna Swendson put one in her Enchantments, Inc. series. Now, I suppose I will have to wait another year for the next installment. Parents: this is best suited for teens since there is some violence, but probably safe for most horror fans. There are also a ton of wonderful themes about feminism, racism and I am sure everyone will be asking for there own personal gargoyle.

Here is my Luc, well this one has never been named, but I got him after a trip to Paris and knew I needed a gargoyle of my own and this one had the face of a dog!

Cate of the Lost Colony by Lisa Klein, a wonderful historical YA about the Roanoke Colony. And Ian Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, to the kids.

A nice man comes on Mondays and handles that, lest I kill all the plants.

“What do the eggs look like in the Dragon Story app?” I’m so addicted to that game!

When people say, “Oh, you write kids’ books? I bet if you set your mind to it, you could write for adults, too!”

LOVED IT

Welcome to Mars! Somewhere in the future, we meet Zenn in the opening act where her mother disappears along with Indra (snake-like creature with immense natural powers of energy) and the world quickly builds from there. Through Zenn we are introduced to a host of strange animals that populate this world as she trains to be an exovet like her family. As she trains, strange things start to happen to her, she connects with the animals, in fact so much, she can feel their disease. Back in the Ciscan Cloister Exovet Clinic, a sort of monastery city, she meets Liam, a new student, and she doesn't even register that he is attracted to her. She has very little filter between her mouth and her brain and this leads to trouble at times.

Of course, there must be a bit of a mystery to keep the plot going so Zenn tries to discover why her father seems to ignore her most of the time, leaving her training to her uncle as she progress to her being fully invested as an exovet. There are increasing threats to her society as robbers ply their trade and the citizen are about to give up on their city. Since this is the initial book in the series, there is a lot of world building necessary to plot the upcoming installments and are a bit slow in places. Overall, this is a great start to a new Sci-Fi series, something I haven't seen in a long time.

About the AuthorChristian Schoon grew up in Minnesota, and worked his way through college in a succession of rock bands before earning his degree from the U of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Journalism. Following a stint as an in-house copywriter/scriptwriter at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, he supplied freelance copy for the entertainment industry and scriptwriting for live-action and animated TV. Currently, he writes from his 150-year-old farmstead in Iowa which he shares with a fluctuating number of horses (generally less than a dozen, but not always), 30 or so cats, a dog, three ferrets and a surprisingly tolerant wife. 1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

Well, memory, as research has shown pretty unequivocally lately, turns out to be the very essence of an unreliable narrator; a messy little serpent’s-nest of neurons who have a way of re-routing themselves when you’re not paying attention. But, my current memory-config tells me one of the earliest books I read was Beautiful Joe by Saunders. It’s a tough read, emotionally, for a youngish kid – Joe lives a true dog’s life, especially at first. But the story is just so unforgettable and humane (as opposed to human). A real classic and a heart-breaker and a life-affirmer.

2. What are you reading right now?

I’ve just started in on my copy of Playing Tyler by fellow Strange Chemistry author T.L. Costa; it jumps off to a brilliant beginning. She has SO captured the teen-boy voice. I’m hooked. It’s gonna be quite a ride, I can already tell!

3. How does your garden grow?

Is this a tricksie question? Hmmm… my garden is the sort that receives the bare minimum of tending so it grows tangled and briary-fruitish-vegetable-y-leafy and amusingly-mutated but not so thorny-dystopic-pointy-rooted you can’t walk around barefoot.

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

The name of the author of Beautiful Joe (*looks sheepish* Yes, I'm fessing up here; I read it back in grade school, but I should still have remembered the author’s name. My apologies.)

5. What makes you cringe?

Seeing any life form - human, non-human, imaginary, alien - in pain. I seem to have a really visceral reaction to this sort of thing. Of course, after the brief cringing, I'll try to do whatever's in my meager capability-range and skill-set to remedy the situation.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Stephen has lived his whole being invisible to every one without knowing exactly why. When he is a young teen, his mother dies and he exists in New York City, the perfect place to be unseen. That is until a new girl moves into his apartment building and shocks him to his very core. Elizabeth can see him and although she has major family and attitude issues, Stephen starts to fall for her. As the pair become closer and closer, Elizabeth realizes that something is not quite right with her new boyfriend. When he finally confesses that no one else can see him, she does what any loving girlfriend would do: she breaks up with him.

It is so lucky that if Stephen really tries, he can be heard, so when he reveals himself to her brother, Laurie, he convinces Elizabeth that she should not abandon him because of his uniqueness. Elizabeth isn't one to back down from a fight which is exactly what landed the family in New York after her brother comes out in their small town in the Mid-West. So, with something new to fight for, Elizabeth decides to find out how he became invisible and fix it. Or at least learn to live with it. It seems that Stephen has been cursed by his grandfather and there the story really takes off in a break neck pace.

Winding though New York's Central Park and other landmarks, the trio track down a lady who can see spells and Elizabeth is gifted in this manner, thus explaining why she is the only one who can see him. One major highlight for me is there is a dachshund named Tigger - sorry, you have to read the story to find the dog. I really enjoyed this tale quite a bit and would love to follow up on Elizabeth and Stephen to see if the pair continue on in any new adventures. Parents: this is best suited for mature teens because of implied sexual situations handled with taste and some language.

LOVED IT

Elijah and Holly and separated by their parents before they can date in ninth grade. They are also told they have MAD - Mental Adolescent Dysfunction - a mental disorder with noted feelings of being able to read minds or think they can fly, which can lead to hallucinations and looking crazy. Drugged for the last seven years and hiding their devastating disease, they both try to assume normal adult lives. Holly is finished with college and is her father's assistant in his chart topping magic show in Las Vegas. Elijah is a carpenter at the same casino and lives with two roommates. When the two cross paths again, the spark they had as fourteen-year-olds is still there. So now Elijah is reaching out to Holly to get his hands on some of her medication since the pharmacy can't get the drug to him.

The pair soon figure out that a conspiracy against them has taken place and the their "hallucinations" are not that at all. Holly has the power to levitate and move objects with her mind, while Elijah can actually read minds. To say they are upset with the parents is an understatement. Holly's roommate, Kaylee is also in charge of the casino security and as a mind changer, she is pretty much on top of everything. She has also escaped from the Rez, a group of malevolent young teens and adults, bent on destruction and living a sort of Lord of Flies existence. Kaylee knows that the pair are a high target for the group to use and take over the casino, given a chance.

I adore the almost spit personality of Holly, she can be super sweet and docile but has a backbone when riled up. The zen-like calmness of Elijah is a perfect balance to keep her literally grounded. Yes, literally makes complete sense in this case since Holly can pretty much walk on air. I know fans of Echols' young adult novels will probably have some cross words for this book, but I love it when authors try new things. I give her tons of credit for taking the chance and writing a darn good paranormal romance with lots of humor. I was a bit shocked when I was laughing instead of crying while reading this since her books usually wring the emotion out of me. This is a perfect summer read when something light is just what you need. Parents: there are some adult situations since this is a New Adult novel.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

I am such a huge fan of this series and I cannot, WILL NOT, believe that this is the end of the story. Even though the story happened just as I hoped, I was still a bit surprised at exactly how it all worked out. Amy had come such a long way and my fears that Elder wasn't quite right for her seem to be playing out. I really want to say that when they finally get to Centauri - Earth, I was having Land of the Lost flashbacks - complete with bad special effects and everything, which, in my opinion was the BEST! Talk about being able to lose yourself in a book! There is a mini love triangle just to spice things up and the fact that the planet has been inhabited by Earthlings for centuries, just answers all of your Sci_Fi fantasies. I really don't want to let these characters go, so maybe Revis will have pity on me and let them explore this new planet.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

How many times have you wanted to just get revenge and take out your fury at the injustices you have suffered quietly? Well, these three young teens go for it even though they find there are consequences to your actions. Meg, quietly stoic, is a foster child. living with daily abuse from her guardian, who refuses to feed or clothe her properly even though the state pays her. Stephanie, an outspoken activist, who weeps for the earth and all of the damage that is being done to it. Alix is an anger surfer girl, outraged by the bullies that abound in the sea. Together they channel their anger and seek revenge on those who have wronged them and others.

This is a smart and updated version of the Greek Furies mythology of three females who were put on earth to avenge the weak and those causing evil. These girls are a modern spin with each one tackling current issues of ecology, bullies, and the poor. I really enjoyed the connection these girls had together and how that bond made them stronger. Although they soon realized that the power could be used for evil as well. The characters are all nicely developed and I would really like to read more about them.

Not quite as well as I'd like, actually. I live in Louisiana. I don't have gutters on my house. The water runs off the roof and hits my flowers like blade. My hanging plants did pretty well last year though.

5. What makes you cringe?

Most things having to do with styrofoam. The sound hurts clear to my soul. Also, instant replay of athletes breaking something. And that moment a child does something I know will hurt, but I also know I can't stop it.--

MY THOUGHTS
REALLY LIKED IT - BOARDING ON LOVE

Maddy is set to go to Northwestern University and is all packed when she has second thoughts after an event (spoiler!) and decides to stay and become a Guardian. Contacting Jacks to help her through the rough spots, he becomes moody and withdrawn as she becomes a star. Of course, we are introduced to a new mean girl, Emily, a Downunder mega-angel-in-training as well, since Vivian now has a new boy under her influence and Jacks is damaged goods. Detective Sylvester is sensing some evil presence and with that the bodies are stacking up. The new president of the USA is ganging up with world leaders to outlaw the angel's pay for protection service.

While Maddy is in training, she is having major issues with her flying since she is a late bloomer in the wing department. Tom, a decorated pilot, is brought in to help her with her issues and faster than you can say "Love Triangle", things get weird in Angel City. Jacks is mopey and despondent since he is no longer the center of attention. It seems that Maddy's star is shining brighter now and that doesn't sit well between the two. Bring in the evil doers and we are all set for a major showdown. Well, that almost happens, but this one also ends with a major cliffhanger to keep you tuned in for the last (hopefully!) installment.

Well, I had some major issues with this book since I adored the first one so much. Maddy seemed a bit too into herself rather than being so selfless in the first book. By the end of the story, the old Maddy is shining through. I only hope Jacks can recover as much in the next installment. Tom is an interesting character and between those two boys, there could be some interesting fireworks to come. Parents: this is pretty much any teen show on television.
