The report analyzed 43 mass shootings—nearly one per month—that occurred in 25 states between 2009 and 2013.

It found that:

Fewer than 1 percent of gun murder victims were killed in incidents that included four or more victims.
Shooters killed a current or former intimate partner or spouse in at least 40 percent of cases.
Assault weapons or high-capacity magazines were used in 28 percent of the shootings and when they were, more than twice the number of people were shot.
No more than 33 percent of the incidents occurred in public places that were so called "gun-free zones".

"These findings challenge some of the conventional wisdom about mass shootings, and the report highlights the areas in which further attention and research are needed," a representative from the bipartisan coalition, which formed in 2006, says in the study.

One of Chicago's "mass" incidents as defined by the study included convicted murderer James A. Larry, 33, of Madison, WI, who was reportedly angry his family would not convert to Islam, as he had done while serving a Wisconsin prison sentence for a weapons conviction.

He traveled to Marquette Park in April 2010 and used a shotgun to slay his mother, pregnant wife, infant son and two nieces, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

The other shooting—in September 2010—reportedly involved Raul Segura-Rodriguez, 36. Police say he murdered four people, execution style, in a garage in the 6100 block of South Kildare Avenue in West Lawn. Officials say he was part of a drug-trafficking crew that had been involved in at least 10 other killings, according to the report.

Chicago currently has some of the strictest gun laws on the books, according to the Huffington Post, but police data reported by the New York Times shows that more than 15,000 of the police-traced guns came from just outside the city limits as well as from neighboring towns that permit gun stores.

"Guns in Chicago flow from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Guam," Huffington Post reports. "The majority of guns come to Chicago from other areas in Illinois, but a large portion also come from southern states."

North Side Rep. Mike Quigley (IL-05) introduced the Trafficking Reduction and Criminal Enforcement Act last week, which cracks down on the illegal gun market by improving gun tracking data. The bill also repeals the Tiahrt Amendments, which hamper law enforcement’s pursuit of criminals who buy and sell illegal guns.

“The TRACE Act is the type of commonsense gun control reform we need to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people,” Quigley said. “Our law enforcement officials face a sea of illegal weapons flooding our streets, but the TRACE Act will close the loopholes that allow criminals to obtain illicit guns and choke off the supply to traffickers.”

Local 43rd Ward Ald. Michele Smith asked that residents "get serious about gun control."

"I, like you, have watched with shock, sadness, and anger as instances of gun violence continue to rock our country," she said, in a statement, later endorsing Emanuel's new gun control legislation which includes stiffer penalties for breaking the laws. "As a parent, I feel that more needs to be done. As a former federal prosecutor and a current member of a legislative body, I know how we must begin."

Chicago Police Chief Garry McCarthy recently met with President Barack Obama and top cabinet members, after which he told ABC, "There seems to be a consensus among police—and a popular consensus—that the reasonableness of gun laws has to be examined."

McCarthy held a press conference afterward, in which ABC recorded him as saying that within the first three weeks of the month, "two of Chicago's 22 police districts seized more illegal guns than were collected in all of New York City."

Two men in their 20s sustained gunshot wounds in separate South Side shootings Wednesday, police said.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the right arm about 1:30 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Princeton Avenue in Englewood, police said.

He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital before being transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center, police said.

About 6:55 p.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the 8100 block of South Exchange Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood.

He exchanged words with three others before one of the three pulled a handgun and opened fire, police said, hitting the man in the back side of his thigh.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition, police said.

Nobody is in custody and detectives from Area Central and Area South are investigating

A federal judge Monday afternoon granted a temporary restraining order putting a stop to the arrests of Occupy Nashville protesters on Legislative Plaza. In a surprise move, the state did not oppose it.

A preliminary injunction hearing is set for Nov. 21.

U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger said she would have issued the order, even if it had been opposed.

"I can't think of a more quintessential public forum than Legislative Plaza," she said, adding that the new policy represented "clear prior restraint of free speech rights."

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor will deliver a speech titled, "A Fair Shot at the American Dream and Economic Growth," if you are leader of the GOP

Progressive activists and one chubby middle age blogger on Wednesday continued to organize against House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's upcoming visit to Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management.
The No. 2 Republican in the House will be speaking about income inequality 12:15 to 1 p.m. Friday at the Allen Center, 2169 Campus Drive, Kellogg spokeswoman Megan Washburn confirmed Tuesday.
In the wake of that announcement, at least four groups are planning coordinated protests Friday, according to their representatives and Facebook postings.
Occupy Northwestern will be forming a picket line outside the Allen Center starting noon Friday, said one of its organizers, graduate student Lauryn Flizeer. She added some Occupy Chicago participants will be traveling north to join the campus-based group.
Flizeer said she was "inspired by UPenn" to challenge Cantor's on-campus appearance, pointing to his recent lecture cancellation at the Ivy League school after Occupy protesters showed up in force.
The Facebook event page for the Occupy Northwestern protest urges participants to give Cantor the "same kind of welcome they gave him at UPenn."
Flizeer cited Cantor's views on the minimum wage, bank bailouts and tax cuts as why his visit needs to be challenged.
"He's the staunchest advocate of the 1 percent," she said, using the Occupy movement's term for the country's top income-earners. "He's against everything that people of conscience stand for in this country."
Occupy Evanston protester Jack Sigel was similarly critical of Cantor's political convictions. He said he has been in touch with other Occupy groups and will be gathering other city demonstrators for Friday's speech.
Sigel added it is especially pertinent NU students pay attention to Cantor's beliefs and how they could negatively impact their generation.
"I think it's huge for the students to know who Eric Cantor is," Sigel said. "He's leading the charge to eliminate Pell grants. This is not someone who is on the students' side."
But Sigel downplayed turnout numbers Wednesday, saying Occupy attendance is naturally difficult to anticipate.
"It's in the nature of Occupy movements not to have top-down leadership," he said, adding "as many in my group who can come" will be present.
Weinberg freshman Tom Cui agreed Cantor's campus visit should not go uncontested. He said he will try to appear at as many protests as possible Friday.
Cui also mentioned a potential protest by local MoveOn members Friday, recalling a recent exchange with a MoveOn coordinator.
Messages left with two representatives from the Illinois 9th Congressional District MoveOn Council were not immediatedly returned Wednesday night.
Regardless of Friday's turnout, Cui said Cantor's speech serves as a valuable opportunity to grow Northwestern and Evanston's Occupy involvement.
"It can definitely sustain," he said. "Get 1,000 kids out on campus and pay attention. I know there are some people on campus who want to get involved but just need the spark to get things going."
A Politico article published Wednesday morning focused on Cantor's sometimes controversial public appearances. Authors Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan touched on his recent speech back-out at UPenn as a prime example of their topic.
"But the event was canceled when the Service Employees International Union and the Occupy Philadelphia protest movement threatened to fill the 300-person audience," the authors wrote. "That won't stop Cantor — has upcoming speeches at Northwestern University and Rice University."

Records show the bank — sued by the state late Thursday for allegedly defrauding state and local pension funds out of $40 million — began donating the maximum amount under federal law to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s PAC and reelection campaign beginning in May 2010. Cantor’s wife, Diana, joined the VRS board in April of that year, and was appointed board chairwoman June 2010.

Bank of New York Mellon spokesman Kevin Heine declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Cantor did not immediately respond to a message.
