Squeezed-together titles

As you enter information into the search box of the NHAIS ILL System, suggestions appear below the box. You may select one of the suggestions to complete your entry. The suggestions are drawn from the indexes for the system's union catalog, the NHU-PAC. This week we're seeing words of titles getting squeezed together in those "type-ahead" suggestions..

The more you type, the more words get "smushed" together. Auto-Graphics is aware of this and looking into fixing it. It doesn't affect performance: choosing one of the squeezed-together titles will give the same results as if un-smushed.

Brief ILL outage Tue 8/18 10pm

The NHAIS ILL System will be offline briefly starting at 10 o'clock tonight (Tuesday, Aug. 18) to update software.

For requests marked for deletion, the Borrower Requests and Lender Requests lists will now show a trashcan icon next to the title.

This will allow staff to see at a glance from these pages if a request is marked for deletion without needing to open the full request record and look for a note that says "Request Number 110562 has been scheduled for deletion."

Requests marked for deletion will still need to wait for overnight processing in the system before they disappear. Actually, deleted requests are archived and invisible to users while still being counted in statistics reports.

NHAIS ILL System issues Wed 8/5 update

Wednesday, Aug. 5, 9:40 a.m.: In the past hour, the NHAIS ILL System appears to be functioning normally with testing on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Auto-Graphics is still looking into what happened earlier this morning.

Wednesday, Aug. 5, 7:55 a.m.: The NHAIS ILL System is not having a very good morning. Pages aren't loading properly. "Unable to perform search" and "Unable to load Full Record" messages are common and logging in may be impossible. The issues are being reported to Auto-Graphics.

Headings on shipping labels

The NHAIS ILL System will be offline briefly tonight (Tuesday, August 4) starting at 10 o'clock. One fix is part of this software update: on system-generated shipping labels, the DELIVERY and RETURN headings were in a smaller font size after a recent release.

Shipping labels printed after tonight's update will have the original, larger font size.

Much ado about due dates--updated

Following recent changes to how Undo Shipped works and how notes are indicated, this is an update of a November 2022 post about due dates.

Due dates in the NHAIS ILL System are calculated from the day a request is marked Shipped. By default, the system assigns a date 42 days (6 weeks) in the future. You can set different default loan periods for different formats and for renewals vs. initial loans if you fill out the Lending Policy form.

BUT there are times you may wish to have a special due date on an individual request. That's usually when the borrower has requested an extended loan period, often for a book group. Always look for the "note" icon to the left of the title in the Lender's Pending List--that tells you you should click on the title to see the Borrower's Notes in the Lender's Full Record Display.

To change the note icon from "unreviewed" to "reviewed," you'll need to choose Review Notes when looking at the full record display...

...then choose the Acknowledge Notes button when you've read the note(s)..

You can submit a custom due date at the SAME TIME the status change to Shipped is submitted. You MUST be viewing the Lender's Full Record Display, not the Lender's Pending List, to enter a custom date.

If you realize after the request is Shipped that you should have entered a custom due date, you can use Undo Shipped to change the status back to Pending and get a do-over.

Undo Shipped is available until the borrower marks the request Received. Once a request is Received by the borrower, you have another opportunity to change the due date by choosing the Renewed by Lender option.

If you're responding to a Renew Pending request from the borrower, you have the option to enter a custom due date at the SAME TIME you submit the Accept Renewal status change. If you don't submit a custom date with the approval, the system will assign a due date that is 42 days (or whatever default renewal period you've specified on the Lender Policy form) from the CURRENT DATE rather than adding to the original due date. (If you accidentally submit Reject Renewal instead of Accept Renewal, there's an undo for that!)

Now that you know, (with apologies to Cole Porter) do do that "due" voodoo that you do so well. Adieu.

Enhancement for ILL participants in union catalog

The NHAIS ILL System will be offline briefly starting at 10 o'clock tonight (Tuesday, July 21). This software update includes an enhancement that will affect only the 33 public libraries and 17 school and special libraries that still maintain holdings in the system's union catalog (the NHU-PAC). These libraries either have no automated catalog or have one that cannot serve as a Z39.50 target in the ILL system. With tonight's update, they'll see a "My Library Owns" indicator where that applies in search results. Users will be able to see at a glance whether their library owns a title without opening the full record.

This will display in both the list view (above) and gallery view (below).

North Country Van Route Update

We continue to refine and improve our plan to continue service to libraries who receive inter-library loan delivery through North Country routes. Please see below for a list of current hub libraries and our suggestions about where libraries can drop off. If your library would prefer to use a different hub, that is fine, please just let us know so that we are sure we get the bin to the right location. Please note, there are a few changes from last week.

I want to acknowledge that this is no one’s preferred method of operation. I also want to thank you for your patience as we’ve been building the plane while flying the plane. I’d like to share some factors and facts with all of you so that you can understand what we are doing and why:

1. The usual North Country routes driver lives in the area. This means that many days during the week she can start or end her day near the libraries in Coos, Carroll, and Grafton Counties. When we have a substitute van driver, that person starts and ends the day in Concord.

2. In the past, we have had a roster of five circulation/reference staff members who, under “other duties as assigned”, were able to fill in on routes when drivers took vacation or were out for medical reasons. Today we have a roster of three— Diana, me, and one substitute driver. Additionally, when Diana drives, that requires us to find people who can fill in for her at the circulation desk that day. Sometimes that is not achievable.

3. At this time, we do not know how long we will have to operate like this. I acknowledge that is its own difficulty, and I am sorry for that.

4. The North Country routes, while the most affected, are not the only inter-library loan routes affected lately. Libraries in the southwest corner of the state have also recently dealt with multiple cancelled routes and reduced deliveries for several weeks while we sought to hire a new driver. A director on the seacoast is making the trip to Concord tomorrow to drop off and pick up bins for three libraries because their usual driver is on vacation.

5. I am deeply appreciative of the work and effort that Diana and Jen have put into this plan. However, these decisions are mine and mine alone. Please direct any questions, comments, or concerns directly to me.

6. I would like to propose that for two weeks we all give this plan a chance to work. Then, on 7/29, I will make myself available via Zoom to take your collective feedback, ideas for improvement and virtual rotten vegetables.

Sorting fix and request form enhancement coming Thu 7/9 10pm

The NHAIS ILL System will be offline briefly starting at 10 o'clock tonight (Thursday, July 9) to allow installation of program updates.

With tonight's update, locations listed in the Where To Find It area will once again be sorted by town/library name rather than HSA code.

On the request form, some lines (including ISBN and ISSN) have 3 fields and these fields are blank if the source record has no relevant information. These fields will now show placeholder text, illustrating the expected input for more intuitive entry by users.

This will likely be most useful when requesting journal articles, where you're currently faced with lines like this on the request form:

Public Access to 1.2 Million Historic Government Records Dating Back to 1895

The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) has launched public access to more than 1.2 million newly available records of historic U.S. Government publications, making it easier than ever to find documents published between 1895 and 1976. The records are now live in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP) and are available to the public at no cost. This launch improves search and discovery and opens the door to decades of Government publications that were previously difficult to locate online.

“Making these 1.2 million records available is an investment in the future of public access to Government information,” said GPO Superintendent of Documents Scott Matheson. “Researchers, students, librarians, and the public can now more easily find and use historic Government publications, and we look forward to seeing how the library community puts these records to work.”

Historic highlights from this launch include:
1. Hearings on the causes of the Titanic disaster, 1912
2. “Plant a Victory Garden, Our Food is Fighting” World War II poster urging Americans to grow their own food to support the war effort, 1943
3. Hearings on the Apollo 13 accident, 1970

The new records come from the Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, often called “MoCat.” They were converted from the print catalogs to a searchable form and freely licensed to the public by Proquest, part of Clarivate. For many years, MoCat served as the official list of publications produced by GPO. Published from 1895 through 2004, it helped libraries and the public track Government publications. After MoCat ended, the CGP became the primary tool for finding Government publications. While newer publications have long been searchable online, many older publications had limited or no digital records.
