September is a good month to remember that many of the gay men who came of age after Stonewall helped create the bars, clubs, publications, organizations, and cultural spaces that younger LGBTQ+ people sometimes take for granted.

The first gay-rights organization in the United States was founded in September.
The Society for Human Rights, founded in Chicago in 1924, is generally recognized as the first documented gay-rights organization in the United States. It was inspired partly by Germany's pioneering gay-rights movement.

For gay men who love clothes, September is basically the Super Bowl of fashion. The major fashion calendar moves into the Spring/Summer following year shows, while stores are filling up with fall clothing. Translation: It's officially time to judge everyone's coat.

September is a huge month for New York culture.
Broadway, museums, galleries, fashion, restaurants, nightlife and concerts all come roaring back after summer. For LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, September can feel like the city has turned the volume back up.

First things first, honey: the Rainbow Diet has absolutely nothing to do with the rainbow flag.

Zero. Zilch.

Different category, darling. The “rainbow” in the Rainbow Diet simply refers to eating a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables,

because different naturally occurring plant pigments are associated with different beneficial compounds and nutrients.

Can we talk about how MANY people take pictures in public bathrooms?

Like… whole photo shoot.

You walk in to wash your hands and somebody in the mirror is giving Vogue, BET Awards, Met Gala, and “I just left the function” all at the same time.

And you know what?

They’re not in there because they love toilets.

They found the lighting.

That bathroom said:

«“Baby, come stand right HERE. I got you.”»

And honestly?

The bathroom is onto something.

When you take enough pictures, you start noticing real quick that lighting is EVERYTHING.

You can have the outfit.

Hair laid.

Face beat.

Fresh cut.

Angles working overtime.

And then the light hits you from the wrong direction and suddenly you look like you owe somebody money.

That’s why when the sun hits just right, people automatically stop.

“WAIT WAIT WAIT—DON’T MOVE.”

CLICK CLICK CLICK.

Because your brain knows:

GOOD LIGHT = GOOD PICTURE.

And public bathrooms accidentally teach us a whole lesson about photography.

They usually have:

BIG bright light sources

Light bouncing off white walls

Mirrors everywhere

Light coming from more than one direction

Bright, clean surfaces throwing light back onto you

So let me put you onto some home-studio game.

You do NOT need to turn your crib into NASA.

You just need to understand what the bathroom is doing.

1. MAKE THE LIGHT BIG AND SOFT

Here’s the first rule:

Big light = softer light.

A tiny bare bulb can have you looking like you just got interrogated by the FBI.

But a big softbox?

Now the light wraps around your face.

You can also bounce a light off a white wall or ceiling.

That turns the wall into one giant light source.

That’s the cheat code.

And if you’re using diffusion, use something actually made for lighting/photography when possible.

We are creating content.

We are NOT auditioning for “Who Burned Down the Apartment?”

2. STOP MAKING ONE LIGHT DO ALL THE WORK

One light can work.

But multiple lights?

Now we cooking with gas.

Put your main light slightly in front of you and above eye level.

That’s your key light.

Then use another softer light, or bounced light, from the other side.

That helps calm down those deep shadows under your eyes and chin.

That’s your fill.

Then hit the wall behind you with a little light if you want.

Now your background doesn’t look like it’s sitting in witness protection.

That’s background light.

You just created depth.

Congratulations.

You got a little studio now.

Nobody had to call the landlord.

3. COLOR MATTERS

Here’s another piece of game:

Not all white light is the same.

Some lights are warm.

Some are cool.

Some lights will make your beautiful brown skin look like you’ve been marinating in orange juice.

For a daylight-style setup, lights around 5000K–6500K can give you that cooler daylight look.

But here’s the important part:

MATCH YOUR CAMERA TO YOUR LIGHT.

If your lights are around 5500K, you can set your camera white balance around 5500K too.

That helps keep your colors looking right.

And when you’re buying lights, look for a high CRI, ideally around 95+ if accurate skin color matters to you.

Because we are trying to show the outfit.

Not invent a new skin tone.

4. YOUR WALLS ARE FREE LIGHTING EQUIPMENT

This part is mad underrated.

White walls?

Free reflector.

White sheets?

Free reflector.

Mirrors?

Potentially useful for bouncing and spreading light.

Bright surfaces can throw light back onto you and make the whole room work harder.

That means you don't always need another $300 light.

Sometimes you just need to look around your house and say:

“Hold up…this wall been working here this whole time?”

THE REAL LESSON

A “home studio” sounds expensive.

It sounds like:

Cameras.

Lights.

Backdrops.

Tripods.

Computers.

A whole damn production company.

But a studio is really just a place where you control the environment.

You don't need a Hollywood setup.

You need to understand:

Where is the light coming from?

How hard or soft is it?

What color is it?

What is it bouncing off?

What shadows is it creating?

Once you understand THAT?

Now you can walk into a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, hallway, parking garage, or somebody’s grandma’s living room and start seeing the lighting different.

You stop asking:

“Where can I take a picture?”

And start asking:

“Where can I MAKE the light?”

And THAT'S the home studio.

The room ain't the magic.

You controlling the light is the magic.

you do not have to be a fashion model, a designer, or somebody who thinks “couture” is a new medication to enjoy a good fashion show. Watching the shows for the upcoming season is actually one of the easiest ways to get your style together before the season even arrives.

And let’s be honest: sometimes we need a little inspiration. Because there is nothing wrong with wearing the same black T-shirt we have worn 47 times, but at some point that shirt is going to start wondering if it has a retirement plan.

Fashion shows give us ideas.

You might see a designer put together colors you never thought would work. Maybe olive green with pink. Brown with blue. Orange with purple. Suddenly you are looking at the clothes in your own closet thinking, “Wait a minute... I already have this stuff.”

And THAT is where fashion shows can really help.

You don't have to run out and buy an entirely new wardrobe every season. Please. Some of us have enough clothes in our closets to dress a small Broadway chorus. The trick is learning how to wear what you already own in a new way.

That jacket you always wear with jeans? Try it with trousers.

That shirt you normally wear under a sweater? Wear it open over a T-shirt.

Those pants you bought because they looked fabulous in the store and then spent six months hanging in the closet looking at you like an unpaid bill? Put them on!

Fashion shows can also teach you something really useful: how colors work together.

That's one of the best things about watching fashion shows. They can make you look at your own clothes differently.

You might see a model wearing a jacket with a pair of pants and suddenly think, “Wait a minute. I have that jacket!”

You've been wearing it with the same jeans since the Bush administration, but now you see it differently. Try it with different pants. Put a shirt underneath it. Wear it open. Add a necklace. Change the shoes.

Boy, suddenly that old jacket has a new job.

You start noticing why certain colors look great together. You begin seeing how one little pop of color can wake up an entire outfit. You learn that sometimes the difference between “I got dressed” and “Oh, he's looking GOOD today” is one very smart color choice.

And don't even get me started on layering.

A sweater doesn't always have to be worn the same boring way. A button-down shirt can become part of a completely different outfit. A jacket you've worn to dinner can suddenly look casual with jeans and sneakers.

Fashion shows remind us that clothes don't have only one job.

And neither do we.

Maybe you've always dressed one way. That's fine. But it's fun to shake things up every now and then. Try something a little sharper. A little sexier. A little more playful.

You don't have to become a fashion victim. Nobody is asking you to leave the house dressed like a chandelier.

Just experiment.

Because here's the secret: you don't have to buy a whole new wardrobe to look like you've stepped up your game.

Sometimes you just need to stop wearing the same five combinations you've been wearing since 2018.

Gay Pride started as a response to the Stonewall uprising, which was a series of protests in New York City in June 1969.

At that time, police regularly raided LGBTQ+ bars, and the Stonewall Inn was one of the places hit by one of those raids.

But this time, the people inside and around the bar pushed back instead of quietly taking it, and that resistance sparked days of protest and became a turning point for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

The first Pride march happened about a year later, on June 28, 1970, as a way to remember Stonewall and to celebrate queer people refusing to hide. So Pride began as both a protest and a promise: “We’re not going anywhere, and we deserve to live openly and with dignity.

Now, if you're under thirty, you may think Pride has always been giant parades, rainbow merchandise, shirtless men on floats, drag queens doing death drops, and corporations suddenly discovering they have a "deep commitment to diversity" every June.

Bless your hearts.

Pride started as something much bigger—and much braver.

Today, Pride is celebrated all over the world.

In enormous cities, tiny towns, tropical islands, snowy countries, and places where LGBTQ+ people are still fighting for basic rights.

The celebrations may look different, but they all share one purpose: reminding us that we exist, we belong, and we're worthy of being seen.

In many countries, Pride takes the form of parades. Thousands—or sometimes millions—of people march through city streets waving rainbow flags, carrying signs, dancing, singing, and celebrating the simple but revolutionary idea that being yourself shouldn't require permission.

In places like Madrid, São Paulo, Toronto, Sydney, Amsterdam, and London, Pride events attract enormous crowds.

Some cities host festivals lasting several days or even weeks. There are concerts, community fairs, art exhibits, film screenings, health resources, political activism, educational programs, drag performances, dance parties, and enough glitter to be visible from low Earth orbit.

One of the beautiful things about Pride is that there's no single right way to celebrate it.

Some people march.

Some volunteer.

Some attend educational events to learn LGBTQ+ history.

Some support queer-owned businesses.

Some spend the day with chosen family.

Some go to church services that affirm LGBTQ+ people.

Some attend memorials honoring those we've lost to hate, violence, discrimination, and the AIDS epidemic.

Some simply show up as themselves for the first time.

Never underestimate how courageous that last one can be.

For a person who has spent years hiding, walking into their first Pride event can feel like stepping onto another planet—a planet where nobody asks them to apologize for existing.

That matters.

Now here's the part many people forget.

Pride isn't just a party.

It's a celebration because there was something worth surviving.

The reason Pride exists at all is because generations of LGBTQ+ people faced discrimination, criminalization, rejection, violence, and exclusion. Every rainbow flag you see is connected to countless people who stood up and said, "Enough."

Some were famous.

Most weren't.

Most were ordinary people who decided they deserved dignity.

Frankly, history is often made by people who were simply tired of nonsense.

Not every Pride happens in a giant city.

Some of the most moving Pride celebrations happen in small towns.

A few hundred people gather in a park.

A local drag performer hosts bingo.

Someone's aunt brings too much potato salad.

A teenager attends their first LGBTQ+ event.

An older couple holds hands publicly for the first time.

Those moments may not make national headlines, but they're powerful.

Sometimes changing the world looks less like a parade float and more like a folding chair under a community-center tent.

Progress has happened, absolutely. Rights have expanded in many places. Visibility has increased. Representation has improved.

But Pride remains important because visibility matters, community matters, and history matters.

Every generation inherits freedoms it didn't personally fight for and then becomes responsible for protecting them.

That includes yours.

New York City

Now, let's talk about the grand diva herself.

New York City.

If Pride celebrations around the world are stars, New York is one of the brightest constellations.

Why?

Because modern Pride traces its roots directly to events in Greenwich Village, where LGBTQ+ people resisted police harassment and demanded to be treated like human beings.

Those acts of courage sparked a movement that spread across the United States and eventually around the globe.

Today, Pride in New York City is more than a parade.

It's a living history lesson wrapped in a celebration.

Millions of people visit every year.

The city comes alive with Pride events, rallies, cultural programs, performances, community gatherings, youth events, family activities, nightlife celebrations, and commemorations honoring LGBTQ+ history.

You'll see rainbow flags hanging from skyscrapers.

You'll hear dozens of languages spoken by visitors from around the world.

You'll meet people who came out last week and people who have been marching for fifty years.

You'll encounter drag queens, activists, artists, couples, families, allies, tourists, and enough fabulous outfits to make a peacock question its life choices.

Most importantly, you'll witness something bigger than any individual celebration.

You'll see generations standing together.

The people who fought.

The people who benefited from those fights.

And the people who will carry the story forward.

That's what makes New York Pride special.

It's not just a party.

It's not just a parade.

It's a reminder that every rainbow flag waving above the city represents someone who dared to hope for a better future—and someone else who helped make that future possible.

So whether you're celebrating in New York City, a small town, another country, or simply in your own heart, remember this:

Pride isn't about being better than anyone else.

It's about refusing to believe you're less.

And brothers and sisters, after all we've been through as a community, that's worth celebrating every single year.

Before we part ways, I want to speak directly to those of you who may be carrying more than most people can see.

Maybe you've been mocked by strangers who know nothing about you.

Maybe you've heard cruel words from people who were supposed to protect you.

Maybe you've spent years trying to earn love that should have been given freely.

Maybe you've sat alone in your room wondering if things will ever get better.

If that's you, I want you to know something.

There are millions of us who understand more than you realize.

Not because we've lived your exact life, but because many of us have known what it feels like to be judged before being known, criticized before being understood, or made to feel like we had to hide pieces of ourselves just to be accepted.

Some of us survived school hallways that felt like battlefields.

Some of us survived families that couldn't give us the support we desperately needed.

Some of us survived loneliness so heavy it felt like carrying a grand piano up a staircase by ourselves.

And if you've ever tried carrying a piano alone, you'll know that's a ridiculous image. Yet somehow many of us spent years trying to carry our burdens exactly that way.

Here's the truth we eventually learned:

You were never meant to carry it alone.

That is one of the gifts of Pride.

It reminds us that we belong to one another.

It reminds us that family can be created through love, friendship, kindness, and shared experience.

It reminds us that somewhere out there is someone who understands your struggle, someone who would gladly save you a seat at their table, someone who is rooting for you even if they've never met you.

Today, consider me one of those people.

And consider this community your family.

Not a perfect family—we're far too opinionated for that—but a family nonetheless.

A family that celebrates your victories.

A family that grieves your losses.

A family that believes your life has value.

A family that is better because you're part of it.

If the world has been unkind to you lately, hold on.

The chapter you're in is not the entire story.

There are friendships you haven't made yet.

There are people who will love you exactly as you are.

There are moments of joy you haven't experienced yet.

There are reasons to hope that you cannot see from where you're standing today.

I never cried so much writing a blog post as I did writing this today.

How Exercise Makes Your Face More Attractive (The Science Behind the Glow-Up)

Hey NubianNewYorkers!

I’ve been meaning to say this to you for a minute, and you know it’s coming from love.

I know we joke about looks and getting older and all that, but real talk—getting some regular exercise in could do more for you than you think, especially when it comes to how you look and feel. And yeah, I’m including your face in that conversation too.

Think of your body like a whole city, right? Your face is just one neighborhood. You might not be “working out” your face directly, but when the whole city starts running better, that neighborhood levels up too.

When you start moving your body—lifting a little, doing some cardio, even just stretching—you’re improving everything under the surface. Your skin, your circulation, your sleep, your stress… all of that shows up in your face whether you realize it or not.

Like with weights—when you build a little muscle and burn some fat, it’s not just your body that changes. Your face can slim out a bit too. Jawline gets a little sharper, cheeks less puffy, neck looks cleaner. You don’t even have to touch your face for that to happen.

And posture? Don’t get me started. Standing up straighter—stronger neck, shoulders, back—that alone can make you look more put together, more confident. It literally changes how your face sits on your body. Folks notice that, even if they can’t explain it.

Then there’s the inside stuff. Better sleep, less stress, more balanced hormones. You know your skin repairs itself when you sleep, right? So when you’re resting better, your face starts looking less tired, less worn down. Stress goes down, breakouts calm down, eyes look more alive.

And cardio—walking, biking, whatever you’ll actually stick with—that gets your blood moving. More oxygen, more nutrients getting delivered to your skin. That’s where that “glow” comes from. Not magic. Just your body working the way it’s supposed to.

Plus, it helps with inflammation. A lot of what we think is just “our face” is really puffiness, stress, not enough rest, maybe holding onto water. When you start taking care of your body, that stuff eases up. Your face starts looking calmer, leaner, more like you on your best day.

Even the lighter stuff—stretching, resistance bands—that helps more than people think. Loosens up tension in your jaw, your forehead, your neck. You’d be surprised how much we carry stress in our face. When that relaxes, you look younger, softer, more approachable.

And here’s the real part: people can tell when somebody is taking care of themselves. Clearer skin, better posture, more energy, brighter eyes. All those little things add up, and folks read that as “he looks good.” It’s not just about muscles—it’s about health showing through.

Now I’m not saying exercise is gonna magically change your bone structure or turn you into somebody else. That’s not real. But it will change how everything you already have shows up—less puffiness, better skin, more definition, more presence.

It’s like two trees. One gets water, sunlight, care. The other doesn’t. The apples didn’t get worked on directly—but one tree is still gonna produce better-looking fruit.

That’s all I’m saying. Take care of the whole system, and your face comes along with it.

I’m not coming at you sideways—I just want you feeling good, looking how you deserve to look, and sticking around healthy for a long time. We not 25 no more, you know? We gotta be a little more intentional now.

If you want, we can even start something light together. Nothing crazy. Just consistency.

Here’s a little piece of advice I try to live by: introduce good people to good people. You never know what kind of magic comes from those connections.

That’s exactly why I’m starting a series of interviews with some truly incredible men and women in music. First up is someone I’ve respected for a long time— Christian DiCristino.

I met him years ago through another New York DJ, Frankie Paradise. I was already working with Frankie, but getting to meet DiCristino was a whole experience in itself. We talked a bit, sure—but honestly, I mostly just listened.

And that’s where it clicked.

Not only is he a genuinely great guy, he has a style that’s completely his own. When he DJs, you can feel the artistry in it. It’s not just mixing tracks—it’s like he’s painting something in real time, building a picture with sound. The kind of picture you don’t see… you hear.

DiCristino began his DJ career in the 1980s and has been producing electronic dance music since the early 1990s. He is the founder of the record label Bklyn Sessions Trax.

With a long list of original productions and remixes under his belt, he brings extensive experience and confidence to the DJ Booth AND the studio.

1. What was the first track that made you fall in love with music and made you want to DeeJay?

I’ve had a lifelong passion for music, rooted in my early exposure through my father, who worked as a DJ and as a bouncer at renowned clubs such as Paradise Garage, The Fun House, Better Days, and The Loft.

If I had to pinpoint a specific song that sparked my interest and pushed me toward DJing, it would be Love Is The Message. Years later, that influence came full circle when my former partner Oscar P and I created a remix, which was released on his label, OpenBar Music, in 2012 called “The Message” under my prior artist name C. Scott.

2. When it comes to House music, How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you before?

My sound is highly distinctive, defined by deep emotional expression that runs through all of my music, combined with a strong technical edge. Since beginning my production career in 1996, I’ve developed a discography that spans a wide range of genres.

3. What’s one moment in your DJ career that you’ll never forget?

One of my most unforgettable moments was performing at a rave in Holland alongside Omar Santana for a crowd of over 15,000 people. It was an incredible and energizing experience.

4. What’s a mistake you see new DJs make all the time?

I often notice DJs who barely use headphones or do not use them at all, even though they are a fundamental technical tool. Having started DJing in the early 80s with vinyl, headphones were essential and there was no alternative.

I am currently working on several new tracks that are scheduled for release on my record label in 2027.

5. What are you working on right now? How can I share your stuff to new people? What are your social media handles and ways people can hear or get your stuff live or online?

The most effective way for me to share my music is by directing listeners to my artist or label pages on platforms like Beatport, Traxsource, and Spotify, as well as my official website.

I maintain an active and professional presence across all social media platforms, where I regularly share updates through posts and stories.

6. What would you say to someone out there who feels called to music but hasn’t taken that first step yet?

For individuals interested in music production, I recommend first identifying the production software that best suits your workflow, along with the VST plugins, synthesizers, and drum machines that will help you master the fundamentals. Building a strong technical foundation is essential.

It is also important to conduct thorough online research and seek guidance from experienced professionals whenever possible. Their insight can significantly accelerate your growth.

Most importantly, immerse yourself in music that inspires you, evokes positive emotions, aligns with your artistic vision, and creates a sense of community. That connection will naturally shape your unique sound and guide your creative journey.

You know, the sun doesn’t show up all at once.
It kind of sneaks in—first as a soft warmth on your face during a spring walk, then it hangs around a little longer each day. Before you know it, it’s summer, and your skin remembers what heat feels like again.

If you’ve got black or brown skin, you might’ve heard you’re “naturally protected.” And yeah, melanin helps a bit—but it’s not a full shield. It’s more like a thin, beautiful veil: helpful, but not unbeatable.

So don’t stress about changing everything right away. Start small. The kind of small that’s almost too easy to skip.

Just notice.
Go outside for a few minutes—no phone, no distractions. Feel where the sun touches you first. Your nose? Your forehead? Maybe your ears? The sun doesn’t spread out evenly; it has favorite spots. Once you notice that, you’re already paying attention in a way that protects you.

Next, add one tiny habit.
Get a sunscreen you actually like—something light, something that blends right into your skin. Use it once a day, in the morning, just like brushing your teeth. That’s it. Let it become normal, almost boring. The best habits usually are.

Also, pay attention to heat, not just sunlight.
If your face feels warm or tight after being outside, that’s your skin asking for a little help. Rinse with cool water, pat on a bit of moisturizer, take a short break in the shade. Tiny things, but they matter.

Try thinking about time, too.
The sun’s strongest around midday, from about 11 to 3. You don’t have to hide from it—just shift a bit. Maybe take your walk earlier or do errands a little later. Sometimes protecting yourself just means standing in a smarter spot.

And clothes can help more than you think.
Loose shirts that breathe. Sleeves that cover your shoulders. A hat that looks good and keeps the light off your face. When you do it right, it doesn’t look like caution—it looks like style.

If you’ve ever noticed dark marks or scars that stick around longer, don’t be surprised. Melanin-rich skin holds onto color a little more. So give healing spots an extra dab of sunscreen, or find some shade when you can. It’s not a big deal—just care in the right direction.

And water—don’t forget water.
Warm weather slowly dries you out, even when you don’t feel it. So drink up and use light lotions or gels that keep your skin happy. Balance on the inside and outside.

When you do all these small things, you start to build your own rhythm.
It’s not about fearing the sun—it’s about understanding it.
By the time summer really hits, you’ll step outside feeling ready, not worried. You’ll have your habits, your balance, your skin feeling like home.

That’s the point—nothing fancy, nothing perfect—just care that feels comfortable and yours.
