First of all, hello! Are there many of you still reading here? (Let me know in the comments, if you have time!) I've been in Germany since around May, and had lots of adventures, none of which I have bothered to post here. Now that winter is here, I might make a post with some of my instagram photos. We've been lucky to see some special people, places, and wonderful works of art.

Some of you followed my oil painting journey of a hundred and something paintings a couple of years ago, and know that I did that other little experiment last year of 60 acrylic paintings in a row. My rough calculations tell me that the tally must be at over 200 little 'from life' paintings.

A couple months ago, after letting that sit dormant for a while, I suddenly felt like painting the still life again. The story is that we went to the Wallraf museum in Cologne and I fell head over heels in love with this painting by, German painter, Georg Flegel. It was so enjoyable to spot motifs in the still life section that are still being used by artists today (the peeled lemon, for one thing!) I've also been inspired by some magnificent cosmic displays: meteor showers, the ill-fated Comet ISON, Venus shining bright this month. And while we were in Bavaria: Watching the last rays of sun make the clouds pink behind one mountain, as the moon rose behind the other.

This time around, I went with black backgrounds. I don't know why, but I knocked that first one out so quickly that it felt like all the work is finally starting to pay off. They are still difficult, but they feel a bit easier.

A few sold at Retrospect's booths at the European Art Fairs, and a couple I have for sale (direct buy and auction) on my DailyPaintworks gallery. At the moment, I'm keeping them small, in case I have to bring any back with me.

Walker Books Australia asked me to illustrate Maree Fenton-Smith's magical novel for children! This was such a dream come true. I have long admired Walker Books, because of the stories they publish, and because of their logo of the bear walking around with a candle stick. You can imagine how excited I was to work on this!

It has approx. 14 black and white internal illustrations and is the first book I've ever illustrated.

I worked with a great team at Walker, and with a wonderful story by Maree. It's something I would have liked to read at the age of 10 or 11 - I had dark hair and my cousin had red hair and glasses, and we loved playing detectives, meeting under the staircase and telling ghost stories (this book has mystery, cats, scary creatures!). October 1st was the publication date, so it should be available at all good book retailers in Australia.

I have lots more to post here, if I can ever get around to it! I do keep my facebook page and instagram updated, if you are curious about what I'm up to or my travels at the moment.

I'm actually working on a very exciting project at the moment, and then in 17 days or so, I'm going to Germany for a wedding, to see family, friends, and a bit of travelling. Lots to look forward to. I also have ideas about making a new series of still life/landscapes while I'm over there, spurred on a bit by my painting 60 days in a row last year. We'll see!

MILK Japan project

Last year, Japanese fashion label, MILK, approached me about making a pattern for clothing. They had seen my illustration for Nylon, and wanted something similar. As with the Nylon illustration, I was given plenty of creative freedom, and with the input from MILK, this is what we came up with. I had the best time working on this, and it's one of my favourites and a complete dream gig! KIRARA, SHINGO and my agent, Jacky Winter were a delight to work with.

The dresses and skirts will be available from May 2013, in MILK stores in Japan and on their website.

painting the still life

Last year, I made about 60 acrylic paintings from life, in approx. 60 days, under my surname. I don't have a reason other than because I enjoy mixing things up, 'leveling up', and more than anything else: having a secret project. I tend to think of painting and drawing as solving a series of problems or games. However, I find that painting realistically is quite meditative, because once the subject is in front of me, I just have to mix and choose colours.

I was especially proud of that apple. It took me a few days to get through it, and get the transparency I wanted. I used a piece of transparent red plastic to see my values on most of these - a great tip from Lindsey Carr. For this series, I also tried out holding the tip of my loaded paintbrush/palette knife next to my subject to compare colours, and I even tried pre-mixing colours. That was a revelation, because for me, once the colours are right, the rest is just so much easier.

Thought it might be fun to show you all an illustration from concept to print. I chose the NYLON illustration I did for last May's issue. So, here goes!

The brief I got from art director, Evan Campisi, was SUGAR SWEET SUNSHINE, and to go hyper girly, pastel colours, candy etc. I was so excited about this, especially because I do happen to like daisy and hello kitty! I went ahead and researched the themes, and this is the thumbnail I came up with.

It had to be revised because of the gutter in the magazine, which I wasn't aware of, but it was no problem to shift the items away from the centre. This is the thumbnail that got approved.

Here is the final refined sketch. This was approved, and I went straight to colour.

This illustration was such a joy to work on. It pushed me to try new colours and subject matter, and go outside my comfort zone. It definitely made me think more about using brighter colours, just because I loved their intensity on the paper. You can see that in the more recent gallery work I made for Petits Travaux. I have already had one other illustration gig that was inspired by this drawing, and it was just as much fun. I'll share that one with you in a month or so. I love this kind of work, and hope 2013 will send me a few more like it!

A little photo of it in real life. I know this has a filter, but I can't find my other photos of it. Anyway, it's a lot better than scans can capture, (but that's always been my opinion about everything I draw.) I think the original art always has something special which can't be captured digitally.

Thank you for all of your lovely support, comments, likes, emails, thoughts, in 2012. I'd like to wish you all a wonderful 2013!

2012 has been truly amazing for me - lots of dream illustration gigs and exhibitions.
It exceeded all of my expectations, by huge margins, and I'm truly thankful for that!

Here is a recap of my work-related highlights:

Worked with the wonderful teams at Energy BBDO and Hornet Inc, to bring to life an amazing campaign and animation for Oxfam America. I even got to draw Aziz Ansari as a goat!

I met up with the lovely people at Retrospect Galleries early in 2012, and they began representing my work. They showed my work at art fairs all around the globe including New York, Europe and Asia, and released limited edition prints.

The Prisma Artist Collective invited me to join the club, which I feel so honoured to be part of!

Approximately 13 cm/5.25 inches at the highest point, 8 cm/3 inches wide.
It fits comfortably in the palm of my hand (to give you an idea of size).

I cut out approximately 22 pieces of wood on the scrollsaw, to make this diorama and then hand painted them. (The turned piece of wood it sits on, I didn't make, however.) This one was a real labour of love, and I honestly don't mind if it continues to sit in my collection, however, it is available here, if you want to make it yours.
