Information from the National Institute of Mental Health:

What is Depression?
Depression is a common but serious illness. Everyone occasionally feels sad or down; however, these feelings are usually short-lived and pass within a couple of days. When you have depression, it interferes with daily life and causes pain for both you and those who care about you.

Signs and Symptoms Include:
• Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings
• Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
• Irritability, restlessness
• Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
• Fatigue and decreased energy
• Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
• Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
• Overeating, or appetite loss
• Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
• Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment

The severity, frequency, and duration of symptoms vary depending on the individual and his or her particular illness.

To help Your Friend or Loved One:
• Offer emotional support, understanding, patience, and encouragement.
• Talk to him or her, and listen carefully.
• Never dismiss feelings, but point out realities and offer hope.
• Never ignore comments about suicide, and report them to your loved one's therapist or doctor.
• Invite your loved one out for walks, outings and other activities. Keep trying if he or she declines, but don't push him or her to take on too much too soon.
• Provide assistance in getting to the doctor's appointments.
• Remind your loved one that with time and treatment, the depression will lift.

To Help Yourself:
• Do not wait too long to get evaluated or treated. There is research showing the longer one waits, the greater the impairment can be down the road. Try to see a professional as soon as possible.
• Try to be active and exercise. Go to a movie, a ballgame, or another event or activity that you once enjoyed.
• Set realistic goals for yourself.
• Break up large tasks into small ones, set some priorities and do what you can as you can.
• Try to spend time with other people and confide in a trusted friend or relative. Try not to isolate yourself, and let others help you.
• Expect your mood to improve gradually, not immediately. Do not expect to suddenly "snap out of" your depression. Often during treatment for depression, sleep and appetite will begin to improve before your depressed mood lifts.
• Postpone important decisions, such as getting married or divorced or changing jobs, until you feel better. Discuss decisions with others who know you well and have a more objective view of your situation.
• Remember that positive thinking will replace negative thoughts as your depression responds to treatment.
• Continue to educate yourself about depression.

Protein Waffles - Some people comment that they LOVE the Protein Waffles made with almond flour. I have one mother who writes me all the time on how that is the only way for her picky eaters to eat protein at dinner. But there are a few of you who comment that they are too crispy and dry. I have made waffles out of coconut flour before and they are too soft and rubbery, but I have found the solution! The protein powder makes these waffles soft on the inside and crispy on the outside!

TIP: I make a triple batch of waffles whenever I make them and store them in the freezer. If I get home late from work, we have waffles and eggs! All I have to do is toast the waffles like an Eggo Waffle and fry a few eggs...dinner is ready in 5 minutes! If you would like to see a video of me making the waffles

TIP: Make sure your waffle iron is hot hot hot before adding any batter or it will stick.

"HEALTHIFIED" PROTEIN WAFFLES
1/2 cup coconut flour
1 cup JAY ROBB vanilla egg white or whey protein
1/2 tsp Celtic sea salt
1 TBS aluminum free baking powder
1 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
4 eggs
4 TBS butter or coconut oil, melted

Preheat waffle iron to high. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl. Combine the wet ingredients in another bowl. Slowly add the wet ingredients into the dry. Let sit for 5 minutes. Bake according to your waffle iron directions (I spray my waffle iron with THIS Coconut oil spray). Enjoy! Serve with Nature's Hollow Xylitol syrup. Makes 10 waffles.

NUTRITIONAL COMPARISON (per waffle)
Traditional Waffle = 223 calories, 8.5g fat, 5g protein, 27 carbs, 0.7g fiber (26.3 effective)
"Healthified" Waffle = 144 calories, 8g fat, 12.2g protein, 4g carbs, 2.1g fiber (1.9 effective)
In what ways can you lose weight quickly without exercise?
How can you remove quickly without sports? This question is frequently presents in an amount of compounds. Laziness is not always the backdrop to this very question. For many people, for other reasons is only a sport without removing the sole views. There is also a majority on its own environment and so many are wondering: How can I lose weight quickly without exercise and without effort to the work? Simply remove the sport without a lot of people are hoping that limited health should not exert himself physically. "How can I remove quickly without sports?" is why for many, a serious question.

Slimming without sporting and tension for the end of work
When you think of dieting, then you know that rapid weight loss is possible without exercise. The bad thing here though, that they therefore often becomes thick again. However, keep the weight at the fast weight loss is also a decisive result. With a healthy and balanced diet must be fast and does not just something for the character and health. Certainly there are people who do not easily removed simply by eating a balanced diet without exercise. In addition, many working people lack the time to get good healthy diet. Support may also be a good night's sleep you lose weight without exercise. While sleeping the body burns calories too. In order to stimulate the metabolism in sleep once more, even a small evening walk goes before bedtime.

Similarly, dietary supplements can be used for quick weight loss without exercise. Sound are natural food supplements and weight loss without exercise are at the most easily absorbed by the body also. There are dietary supplements containing different types of effects that can be brought to a rapid weight loss without exercise are used. Are easy to remove without it, for example, sports nutrition supplements that can replace a meal. These include shakes are nutritious, but no fat and no fattening foods and are therefore helpful in weight loss without exercise. Another effect is the binding of the fat from the diet. This must not be burned, and is excreted. We could take to lose weight without exercise as well to dietary supplements, which have complementary effects and thus can still be effective.

Protein is the most important element when it comes to building muscle. Protein consists of 20 amino acids, 10 essential and 10 non-essential and semi-essential. The difference is that the non-essential can be built up by the body itself, but must be taken regularly by the food.

The most important thing when it comes to the absorption of protein, the biological value. This refers to how well a protein building block can be absorbed by the body. The biological significance of a protein building block is high when there is a balanced amino acid profile, ie there are all the essential amino acids in the same proportion. Is any food an amino acid underrepresented, so the protein components are included only in a certain percentage. An egg, for example, a balanced protein profile and biological value of 100 Foods with missing amino acids can be supplemented with other foods, so that they complement each other in their biological activity. This amounts to attach special importance to. Potatoes and whole eggs in a mixing ratio of 65:35 to achieve a biological value of 136 meat and full-grain rice in a mixing ratio of 55:45 and a value of 128 well-known, beans plus corn in the ratio of 52:48 a biological value of 98

The bottom line is that we should not only pay attention to the amount of protein, but also on their value and their combinations with suitable food.

Pumpkin Protein Waffle - Do you need a little encouragement to help you stay on track over the Holidays?

GLUTEN FREE AND INFLAMMATION

One issue that comes up is, how to eat gluten free and heal the gut with all the "gluten-free" junk out there!

Yes, these waffles "gluten-free." But I have a few reasons why I don't suggest them. First off, it will still cause inflammation and weight gain. The initial indicator of almost every illness is inflammation of our cells. Therefore it is critical for us to get a better understanding of what causes inflammation and choose the right foods prevent it from happening!

Inflammation is usually associated with pain, swelling, and heat. BUT it doesn't always show externally; "silent inflammation” is more dangerous because we usually dont' know we have it until an illness falls upon us. Everyday issues like headaches, sinus problems, allergies, skin disorders, acne, heart disease, stroke, aching joints and back, arthritis, and cough are nothing more than a physical manifestation of silent inflammation. By the time we notice and address the symptoms, our cells have already been inflamed for a long time.

One of the reasons so many people are dealing with inflammation is because a rapid rise in blood sugar, which causes biochemical changes in the cell. Choosing low carbohydrate foods is one of the best ways to decrease inflammation. When blood sugar rises, sugar attaches to collagen in a process called “glycosylation,” increasing inflammation (and increases wrinkles!) Athletes also mistakenly eat too many carbohydrates that hinder their healing and recovery time because they are constantly inflaming their joints.

When I tell clients to eat “gluten free” they often grab all the “gluten-free” pre-packaged foods on the shelf…but that most likely will cause weight gain and slow the healing process in your gut. Rice flour, the common flour substitute in gluten-free products, is higher in calories, higher in carbohydrates, and lower in nutrients than regular flour. It can cause more inflammation in our body. So my recommendation is to use make your own healthier options by using almond flour and coconut flour, which are very easy to digest. The healthy fats in nuts actually are nourishing to our brain.

Using high quality fats is also essential to reduce inflammation in the body. Omega-6 fats, found in margarine, soybean, corn and safflower oils, are inflammation-causing fats; these are found in salad dressings, most pre-made pesto sauces, Jiff peanut butter, ALL pre-packaged cookies and cracker, frozen dinners... In contrast omega-3 fats, found in fish (sardines, anchovies, salmon), vegetables, grass-fed butter, and free range eggs, have an inflammation-suppressing effect.

Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is a healthy omega-6 fat that enhances the anti- inflammatory effect of omega-3 fats. Both GLA and omega-3 fish oils are helpful in healing arthritis, eczema, and other inflammatory issues. GLA is found in leafy green vegetables, olive oil, walnut oil, macadamia oil, avocados, and nut butters.

My suggestion is to make a triple batch of these and keep in your freezer for an easy breakfast. Just pop one in the toaster like you would the chemical-filled Eggo Waffle.

TIP: Make sure your waffle iron is hot hot hot before adding any batter or it will stick.

"HEALTHIFIED" PUMPKIN WAFFLES
1 cup blanched almond flour (or 1/2 cup coconut flour)
1 cup vanilla egg white or whey protein (Jay Robb)
1/2 tsp Celtic sea salt
1 TBS aluminum free baking powder
3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk (1 1/2 cups if using coconut flour)
2 eggs (4 eggs if using coconut flour)
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1 tsp stevia glycerite (or 4 TBS Swerve)
1 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat waffle iron to high. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl. Combine the wet ingredients in another bowl. Slowly add the wet ingredients into the dry. Let sit for 5 minutes. Bake according to your waffle iron directions (I spray my waffle iron with THIS Coconut oil spray). Enjoy! Makes 6 servings.
Cholesterol Myth
This post is by Craig, Maria's husband. I am a science geek but like to research and put things in easy to understand format. In this post (and the next one) I will break down the whole issues of cholesterol. There is a hypothesis that says eating food high in cholesterol and saturated fat causes high cholesterol in your blood which causes coronary artery disease (CAD). It's called the Lipid Hypothesis. This is what the majority of Doctors and Cardiologists believe. So lets break it down piece by piece and expose the myths that lie in every leg of the Lipid Hypothesis.

What is Cholesterol
First, lets talk about Cholesterol and what it's purpose is in our bodies. Cholesterol is our bodies main repair mechanism. It comes into action whenever there is inflammation to repair that inflammation. Saying you need to lower cholesterol is killing the messenger. It's like killing half the firefighters that come to put out a fire. It won't help put out the fire or what caused the fire, it will make it harder.

There are two main forms of cholesterol. Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL). In the Lipid Hypothesis it is generally thought that HDL is the good cholesterol and LDL is the bad cholesterol. The general theory is that if your total cholesterol is above 200, you are in danger and need to go on a statin drug to lower your cholesterol (more on that later). But the total cholesterol is HDL+LDL. So too much of a good thing (HDL) can lead to a bad thing (too high total cholesterol)? This is the first of many contradictions of the Lipid Hypothesis. If you start digging into the science, it get even more confusing. Recent studies have shown that there is Bad Bad cholesterol (small dense LDL), Good Bad cholesterol (large fluffy LDL) and intermediate LDL (which can be good or bad depending on when they occur). Then there is Good Good cholesterol (HDLs 1 &2) and Bad Good cholesterol (HDL 3). Now the Total Cholesterol number looks even more convoluted.

Saturated fats and cholesterol make the membranes of the cells firm—without them the cells would become flabby and fluid. Cholesterol and saturated fat act as the conduits enabling all of the cells in our body to communicate. Cholesterol and stiff saturated fatty acids form "lipid rafts", which make little parking spots for every protein in the membrane and enabling it to perform its functions. Without cholesterol and saturated fats, our cells would not be able to communicate with each other or to transport various molecules into and out of the cell. As a result, our bodies would not be able to function the way they do. The human brain is particularly rich in cholesterol: around 25 percent of all body cholesterol is accounted for by the brain. Every cell and every structure in the brain and the rest of our nervous system needs cholesterol, not only to build itself but also to accomplish its many functions

One of the most abundant materials in the brain and our entire nervous system is a fatty substance called myelin. Myelin coats every nerve cell like the coating on electric wires. It provides nourishment and protection for our brain and nervous system. People who lose this protective coating develop a condition called multiple sclerosis (MS). Myelin is composed of over 20% cholesterol.

Many of the hormones in our body are made from cholesterol (testosterone, progesterone, pregnenolone, androsterone, estrone, estradiol, corticosterone, aldosterone and others). In our stressful modern lives we consume a lot of these hormones which can lead to Adrenal Fatigue. In addition every sex hormone in our bodies is made form cholesterol. So without it, we wouldn't be able to have children.

Our livers make bile out of cholesterol, so even digestion and our ability to absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins is dependent on cholesterol. Cholesterol also plays a vital role in our immune health. And most importantly (back to our original point), the liver sends cholesterol to the site of an injury or inflammation. This is one of cholesterol's most vital roles. Cholesterol and fats are essential in removing toxins and healing. This is why blood cholesterol levels go high after a surgical procedure. The liver is sending out lots of LDL cholesterol to clean and heal the cuts and damage from the surgery. LDL also goes up when dealing with an infection, bacteria or viral attack.

Blood cholesterol levels of between 200 and 240 mg/dl are actually quite normal. In older women, serum cholesterol levels greatly above these numbers are also quite normal, and in fact they have been shown to be associated with longevity. In this study it is shown that the higher the number, the less mortality by all causes, heart disease, cancer, etc.

So as you can see cholesterol and saturated fat are vital to our bodies and our health. We wouldn't be able to live without them.

Myth 1: Eating Cholesterol and Saturated Fat leads to High Cholesterol
This is actually pretty easy to dispel. The longest running study and perhaps most significant study on heart disease is the Framingham Heart Study (followed 15,000 participants over 3 generations). It has shown that dietary intake of cholesterol has absolutely no correlation to heart disease. This chart shows the results and as you can see there are nearly identical rates of heart disease among men and women regardless of their cholesterol intake (above or below average).

The Framingham study also found the same to be true about saturated fat intake:

"In Framingham, Mass., the more saturated fat one ate, the more cholesterol one ate, the more calories one ate, the lower the person's serum cholesterol. The opposite of what… Keys et al would predict"

Even Ancel Keys, the father of the Lipid Hypothesis said in 1997:

"There’s no connection whatsoever between the cholesterol in food and cholesterol in the blood. And we've known that all along."

Gary Taubes wrote a great piece on why this became the "law of the land" and the politics behind it.

Myth 2: High Cholesterol causes Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
So this is where we are killing the messenger. Yes, high cholesterol is present, but it is not causing the problem, it is there to fix the problem (inflammation, more on that in our next post). There are numerous studies that dispel this myth. First, there is no correlation by country. Here is a video that shows how countries with the highest cholesterol levels (like Switzerland) have low heart disease rates and people like the Australian Aboriginals who have one of the highest rates of heart disease also have one of the lowest blood cholesterol levels.

Another example is the Conference on Low Blood Cholesterol which reviewed 11 major studies including 125,000 women and determined that there was absolutely no relationship between total cholesterol levels and mortality rate from cardiovascular or any other causes.

There are also more than 40 trials performed to determine whether lowering cholesterol levels can prevent heart disease. In some trials the rates went up, others they went down. But on average, when all taken together, just as many people died in the groups taking cholesterol lower drugs as those with no treatment.

Potassium phosphate is defined as a potassium phosphate, which is important for different areas of the body. These include in addition to the red blood cells, also the blood fluid, tissue, and the nerves, - brain, - and muscle cells.

Signs that require the use of potassium phos.
The body has too little potassium in the blood, it comes to fatigue of the organs. This often manifests itself in depression, memory loss and other mental disorders. These phenomena are often used potassium phos, since it is well suited for treatment. A person suffers from a nervous stomach and weak nerves, this may also require the use of potassium phos. Even a buzz or a hum in the ears may indicate a potassium deficiency. An affected often suffer from bad breath and a coated tongue. A potassium deficiency is detected by a blood test at the doctor.

Treatment ranges from potassium phos.
The drug is mostly used for fatigue, but also for nervous insomnia it can be used. Among other things, potassium phos is also used for the treatment of heart disease of organic kind, but also weakness and loss of strength after an infectious disease. In case of diarrhea, a nervous stomach and headaches or burn-out can also be applied potassium phos.

Potassium is a nerve agent phos, which is particularly useful for the treatment of young people. The drug acts primarily on the central nervous system. With plenty of peace and serenity, and slight movement of the work is supported potassium phophoricum. Conversely act mental effort and a lot of frequent movement and loud noises. Especially in the morning, one should start the day calm and not rush.

Kids Health, kids healthy snacks, kids healthy recipes, kids healthy lunch ideas, kids healthy meals.

Kids Health - It is Monday morning and the whole family is running late. The bus is about to pick up the kids and they haven’t eaten anything yet. So you pour them a glass of no-sugar added, “all natural” grape juice and toss
a Pop-Tart their way. But they made it onto the bus and no one was late, WHEW! Thank goodness for pre-packaged “food.”

No time for breakfast meant no time to pack their lunch either, so your children ate school lunch that day; chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, a bun, fruit cocktail and chocolate milk. After school programs and sports keep your kids at school until 4:30, so they grab a granola bar and Gatorade from their backpack to keep their energy up. Once all of the activities are over, mom is tired from driving all over the place and picking up the kids so she throws in frozen pizza with a side of garlic bread with some skim milk. Then a bowl of Lucky Charms for a bed-time snack (they are made with “Whole Grains” now). Does that sound like you?

Tuesday was a better day. Everyone had time for breakfast so the kids had Honey Nut Cheerios (10 tsp sugar), Skim milk (3 tsp sugar) and a banana sliced on top (6 tsp sugar). You packed a lunch of Lunch-ables turkey and cheddar sub (14.75 tsp sugar), Goldfish crackers (4.75 tsp sugar) and a juice box (6.75 tsp sugar). The after school snack was yogurt covered raisins (5 tsp sugar) and Gatorade (3.5 tsp sugar). You had time to make dinner so you made spaghetti (10.75 tsp sugar) with a side of garlic bread (5.5 tsp sugar), salad with fat-free French dressing (2.25 tsp sugar) and skim milk (3 tsp sugar) for dinner…oh, and fat-free frozen yogurt (5 tsp sugar) for dessert! You think you did better today…but did you? That comes to a total of 80.25 teaspoons of sugar in the blood for the day (4g effective carbs equals 1 tsp of sugar in the blood). Do you know what a normal blood sugar level is? 1 cup? 2 cups? NO, 1 TEASPOON of sugar is a normal blood sugar! For adults, children, teens and babies. Blood sugar increases insulin and insulin is TOXIC to our bodies and cells. I feel terrible for the kids diagnosed with ADD and ADHD... maybe it is just too much sugar.

Dr. Stephen Sondike, Program Director for NEW (Nutrition, Exercise and Weight Management) Kids Program at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, disagrees with the assertion that low-carb diets make kids sluggish. He says the opposite is true. “Kids get tired when they eat a breakfast high in carbohydrates and their blood sugar drops at around 10:00 am.” Sondike says that a breakfast consisting of a bagel and a
glass of orange juice—both high-carb items—causes a temporary spike in blood sugar for a high-energy
early morning, but results in a mid-morning “crash” that leaves bodies listless and craving sugar. “When you eat more sugar, your body makes less sugar, so you need more sugar,” Sondike explains. “The candy and coke makers love it when people eat high-carb breakfasts because they need that fix around 10:00 am when their sugar drops.” We need to start healing our body with food so adult diseases don’t happen. We are too accepting to put a “Band-Aid” on our issues once the problem has already happened. We need to fix the source of the problems.

Insulin and its counterbalancing hormone, glucagon, are in charge of controlling metabolism. The word insulin may immediately call up an association with diabetes, and this is totally valid. Controlling blood sugar is insulin’s most important job. Many people with heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure in their families have inherited a tendency for their insulin sensors on the cells to malfunction by years of high sugar and starch consumption. As these sensors become tired, insulin resistance develops. Since it’s essential to get the sugar out of the blood and into the cells, the pancreas overcompensates by making more and more insulin to force the tired sensors to work. This starts a detrimental cycle of needing ever more insulin to keep the process going. If we start our children on a diet of high starch, they become so resistant to insulin that the amount necessary to make the sensors respond and clear the sugar from the blood is more than their pancreas can make; they becomes diabetic.

Excess insulin causes a variety of other detrimental problems; it increases the production of cholesterol in the liver; thickens the walls of the arteries, causing high blood pressure; the kidneys retain salt and fluid; and it tells our fat cells to store excess starch and sugar.

Insulin’s actions are countered by glucagon. Glucagon alerts the liver to slow down triglyceride and cholesterol production, for the kidneys to release excess salt and fluid, to the artery wall to relax and lower blood pressure, and to the fat cells to release stored fat to be burned for energy. But, insulin is a stronger hormone and when it is high, it suppresses glucagon’s actions. After a childhood of sugar and starch consumption, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance happens. This is why what we feed our children is so important.

What we eat controls the production of these hormones. In my recipes, you will be able to stimulate glucagon by keeping insulin low, which will allow the metabolism to heal and the malfunctioning sensors to regain sensitivity. Once this healing occurs, the metabolic disturbances that elevated insulin has caused will improve or disappear; cholesterol and triglycerides return to normal, blood pressure returns to normal, blood sugar stabilizes and you can achieve a normal body weight. There’s no need to spend huge amounts of money on medications to put a “band-aid” over these problems. I have seen it time and time again; nutrition is key to a healthy body. You can pay the doctor or you can pay the farmer.

Sure, it takes time planning and preparing meals, but we all make priorities with our time... When your kids attitude and grades improve (as well as YOU lose weight, feel great and look amazing), you will never regret the time you put into it!
