WHY I HATE RELIGION BUT LOVE JESUS

Interestingly I posted this yesterday when it had 300 views. Today for some reason it has over 6 million. Funny thing this internet.

With all the views comes all the buzz, comes the sides comes the analysis, comes the you get what I mean. However a man I highly respect and admire (Kevin DeYoung) posted a critique of this video going line by line. I'd invite you to read it, chew on what he's saying and let me know your thoughts.

"The word “religion” occurs five times in English Standard Version of the Bible. It is, by itself, an entirely neutral word. Religion can refer to Judaism (Acts 26:5) or the Jewish-Christian faith (Acts 25:19). Religion can be bad when it is self-made (Col. 2:23) or fails to tame the tongue (James 1:26). But religion can also be good when it cares for widows and orphans and practices moral purity (James 1:27). Unless we define the word to suit our purposes, there is simply no biblical grounds for saying Jesus hated religion. What might be gained by using such language will, without a careful explanation and caveats, be outweighed by what is lost when we give the impression that religion is the alloy that corrupts a relationship with Jesus."

What is the Elephant Room conference?

The Elephant Room isn't about men side stepping around real issues the church faces.

It is however disrupting the way we think, the way we lead, and the way we do church with the intent to God's word as our standard rather than pragmatics or popularity.

I think its safe to say we believe uncomfortable conversations, passionate discussion, tense dialogue can sometimes lead us to see Jesus more clearly. Getting tied up in church work we tend to even at times looses sight to the work of the church. I believe Pastor James' heart for this day isn't making friends or even being nice, his heart in all of this is to open up a space where real dialogue can happen and we can lay the facts on the table about what God has clearly laid out in His word for us.

This conference isn't for the church goer looking to be a fly on the wall, its way more than that! It's for the church leader looking to seek wisdom and council from men just like you and I who desire to make our life and ministry count for the Kingdom.

January 25, 2012 is going to be Round 2, a new roster of leaders, more in-your-face conversations and at the end we believe a greater understanding of truth and unity.

LIFT UP YOUR EYES

We may not always know the reason for someone's--including our own--suffering. And really in the end, this is not the goal anyways. Rather than wasting time by trying to figure out the root cause of suffering in a given instance, the important thing is to maintain a humble, repentant attitude, and like Jesus, to see instances of suffering around us as opportunities for the work of God to be displayed in people's lives, including our own. To believe that any good can come out of evil takes faith and turns this worlds wisdom that bad is bad no matter what upside down.

It doesn't take faith in self, in a church, in a book you read. It takes faith in Jesus who can-and does-work miracles and in a God who allowed Jesus (who was perfect and innocent) to die a cruel criminal's death on a cross in order to bring salvation and eternal life to us....US! (who were perfectly guilty). Thank God Jesus knew he was dying for our sins and not his own, He knew that God would ultimately overcome and triumph the evil that was upon him, he trusted himself "to him who judges justly" (1 Peter 2:23).

Im praying I would do the same and defy simplistic analyses of other people's-my own-suffering or trials, and see them as opportunities for God's glory to be revealed.

When Jesus saved my life I actually was filled with faith to believe He had great things in store for my life. I read all these amazing stories of God moving in the Bible and would say to the Lord, "Do that in my life".
I am not a Christian to sit on the sidelines.
I long to see God do awesome things in me and through me for His glory.

My brother sent me this song and I listened to it a couple times but then when I took it to rehearsal and actually sang the words from my own lips God made it my new anthem. I love the heart behind the verses and the prayer asking God to show me new things.
Show me miracles. Show me his Greatness.

We're teaching it to our church this Sunday night at our LIFT night of Worship. I'm praying it rocks people to the core and reminds us to ask the GREAT I AM for more of HIS greatness in our lives!

Ruth attends Harvest with her family. Her story came to us on the weekend Robbie preached on Luke 7. It was used greatly!

Excited to announce the release date of our new single called "Your Kingdom Come". This is the second studio single from our church and was introduced last year in our sermon series, "Secrets of the Kingdom". Its a song for the church about the church and our hope in the promise that Christ is building something that can not be stopped.
Excited that a lot of our talented volunteers played on this tune and more excited for you to hear it!

We are working on recording 5 other songs for a early 2012 studio release from Harvest Worship, a ministry of Harvest Bible Chapel in Oakville.
