India is now world’s third largest Internet user after U.S., China

India has bypassed Japan to become the world’s third largest Internet user after China and the United States, and its users are significantly younger than those of other emerging economies, global digital measurement and analytics firm comScore has said in a report.

India now has nearly 74 million Internet users, a 31 per cent increase over March 2012, the report says.

The numbers are lower than other recent estimates, possibly reflecting comScore’s methodology that only factors in PC and laptop-based Internet usage.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) pegged the number of Internet subscribers in India at 164.81 million as of March 31, 2013, with seven out of eight accessing the Internet from their mobile phones.

The comScore report, on the other hand, puts mobile and tabled-based Internet traffic at just 14% of the total.

“Mobile phone based Internet usage is a key component of Indian Internet usage, and I’d say the recent growth is being driven by mobile Internet usage,” Nilotpal Chakravarti, spokesperson of the Internet and Mobile Association of India told The Hindu on Thursday. In addition, many Netizens were using dongles to access the Internet.

Three-fourths of India’s online population is under 35 as against just over half worldwide, the comScore report, India Digital Future in Focus 2013, says, possibly reflecting India’s more recent improvements in literacy.

Men under 35 and women between 35 and 44 are heavier users. But women account for less than 40 per cent of all Indian users, a far lower sex ratio than that of other countries.

A quarter of time spent online is on social media, the comScore report says, and another 23 per cent on email.

While Google sites have the most unique visitors, Net users spend the most time on Facebook, which is at second place as far as unique visitors are concerned.

Yahoo, Microsoft and Wikimedia sites follow in unique visitor numbers.

Among social media sites, Linkedin and Twitter are the next most popular, while Orkut is in decline. Google is by far the most popular search engine, accounting for 90 per cent of all searches in India.

Online retail is on the rise, with domestic retail sites being the most popular, the report notes. For online travel websites too, domestic websites are the most popular, the Indian Railways’ website being by far the most popular destination. Yahoo is also the most popular site for news.

The locus of online dominance has moved steadily towards Asia, which now accounts for 41% of all Internet users; from having 66% of all users in 1996, the United States now accounts for just 13%.

China has the world’s biggest online presence; Its Internet users outnumber Indians by a ratio of 5: 1. Brazil’s Internet presence grew faster than India’s over the last year.

Facebook plans to roll out online purchase just by using log-in details, could rival PayPal

Facebook is planning to roll out a service that will allow you to make online purchases through your mobile devices just by using your Facebook log-in details. AllThingsD reported that the service would allow any online shopper to make purchases on partnering e-commerce mobile apps without entering billing information. The shopper however needs to provide credit card information to Facebook. The world’s largest social networking company will simplify online shopping for users. The users do not have to enter their credit card details each time and can shop with just their Facebook log-in details. The product is still to be tested and the testing will begin in the next month or so. According to the report, JackThreads, a shopping site for young men, is the pilot partner and they will conduct the initial testing. If the product is successfully tested it would also potentially give Facebook keen insight into the shopping habits and preferences of the users. This pilot system could give competition to PayPal which pioneers e-commerce right now. Associated Press reported that spokeswoman Tera Randall said in an e-mailed statement that Facebook has a "great relationship with PayPal, and this product is simply to test how we can help our app partners provide a more simple commerce experience." The test, she added, won't involve moving payment processing "away from an app's current payments provider, such as PayPal." If this service does see the light of the day then Facebook would indeed earn big in mobile commerce. It will also help the company collect useful data about its customers.

62 million Indians access Facebook through mobiles

Exponential growth of affordable handsets in India has helped social networking giant Facebook clock 62 million mobile phone users by June 2013 in the world's second most populous country. The California-based firm reported a healthy growth of 5 per cent in its monthly active users (MAUs) in India to 82 million as of June 30, 2013 from 78 million in June 30, 2012. "As of June 30, 2013, 62 million people in India accessed Facebook through their mobile phones. It has 82 million MAUs in India and the firm believes that the next billion users are going to come through mobile," Facebook India Country Growth Manager Kevin D'Souza told PTI. Globally, mobile MAUs rose by 51 per cent to 819 million as of June 30, 2013 from 543 million as of June 30, 2012, the company said while presenting its quarterly results. "In all regions, an increasing number of our MAUs are accessing Facebook through mobile devices, with users in India, Brazil and Indonesia representing key sources of mobile growth over the second quarter of 2013 as compared to the first quarter of 2013," Facebook had said. Mobile MAU is a user who accessed Facebook via a mobile app or via mobile-optimised versions of the website, whether on a mobile phone or tablet during the period of measurement. "Feature phones consists of a large chunk of mobile phone users in India and with low price points these devices are becoming the first Internet connected device many people will own," D'Souza said. Research firm IDC pegged the mobile phone market in India at about 218 million units last year, growing by 16 per cent year-on-year. Of this, 16.3 million units were smartphones. According to CyberMedia Research (CMR), Indian mobile phone market is seeing a spurt in sales, growing 20.8 per cent to 221.6 million handsets in 2012. Feature phones registered a sales growth of 19.9 per cent to 206.4 million in 2012 from 172.2 million in year-ago period. Irrespective of the platform Facebook's focus is towards connecting people whether it's through desktop, laptops, feature phones or smartphones, he added. "Facebook has evolved from a 'mobile first' to 'mobile best' company as it becomes the primary reason for many to access the Internet. Our priority is to ensure that people have access to Facebook regardless of platform or device," he said. Mobile is the perfect platform for Facebook as both were built for connecting, a constant companion that can capture and share moments anywhere, anytime, D'Souza said. Smartphones outsell basic mobiles for the first time

Gartner said that in the second quarter 225m smartphones were sold, compared with 210m basic handsets, known in industry jargon as feature phones. Smartphones have outsold feature phones in developed economies such as Britain and the United States for almost two years following the boom sparked by the introduction of Apple's iPhone in 2007. Demand for cheaper feature phones in developing economies has kept their sales higher on a global basis until now, however. Google's Android operating system extended its lead as the most popular smartphone software in the second quarter, Gartner said. Some 79pc of smartphones sold were based on it, up from 64.2pc in the same period a year ago. A slew of cheap Android handsets from Chinese brands, some costing less than $100, has helped smartphones overtake feature phones, via growth in developing markets. Apple's iOS software, which runs on the iPhone, accounted for 14.2pc of global sales, down from 18.8pc last year. The company has long been rumoured to have a cheaper version of the iPhone in development to respond to Android's growth at the lower end of the market.

Delayed Monsoon Worries India

MUMBAI -- India's monsoon rains may advance into the grain bowl northwest region only by July 9, the state-run India Meteorological Department said Monday.

The delay is intensifying worries of a shortfall in summer-sown output of staples such as rice, oilseeds and sugar, leading to higher inflation despite adequate grain stocks, which are in danger of rotting due to poor storage facilities.

Monsoon rains have failed to advance from the oilseeds-growing central region to northern states such as Punjab and Haryana in the last 8-10 days.

The progress of the monsoon, which hit the mainland after a delay of four days, has been erratic this year. The seasonal rains usually covers most of the country by July 1.

"By this week, if we don't have enough rainfall, we are looking at a problem. The situation is already at a critical stage," Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Care Ratings, a ratings agency, said.

If the rains don't arrive on time, farmers will shift to other crops from water-intensive rice, the main summer-sown staple foodgrain, he added.

"I think it is quite worrying for summer-sown crops like rice, oilseeds and sugar. These are the three major crops likely to be affected," D.H. Pai Panandikar, who heads RPG Foundation, a private think-tank, said.

The rice shortfall could be between 7 million and 8 million metric tons. Due to the delayed rains, the government isn't likely to meet its targeted harvest of over 100 million tons.

The timing, distribution and quantity of rainfall are crucial to a robust harvest. But rainfall has so far been deficient in 83% of the crop areas.

A shortfall in output may worsen food inflation and limit policymakers from cutting lending rates to boost industrial growth.

"Food inflation is around 10% [now]. It may go up to 12%-15%, depending on the monsoon in the first half of July," Mr. Panandikar said.

Google urges governments to share data for better disaster management

By Mohit sexena : Google on Monday urged governments to get better at sharing information to allow citizens and first responders to make better use of the Internet during natural disasters.
At a conference in quake-prone Japan, Rachel Whetstone, the firm's senior vice president of public policy and communications, said some countries hesitate over disclosing data.

She said this prevents civil society from creating new services to help citizens in need.

"We certainly have found access to data has enormously improved many of our products, including maps," she said at Google's "Big Tent" conference, designed to discuss issues related to the Internet and society.

Roughly 430 participants gathered for the first "Big Tent" in Asia, held in this northern city, which was badly hit by the deadly earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

"We are still seeing quite a few governments globally who are quite closed with their data. If we could have... greater access to that data, I think we could do even more amazing things," Whetstone said.

Tokyo was criticised for not publishing data it had as reactors at Fukushima went into meltdown, spreading radiation over a large area and forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes.

Public officials have said they were worried about sowing panic with information that was not readily understandable.

Engineers at the Google event also complained how Japan initially released radiation contamination data in PDF format, making it difficult for scientists around the world to easily edit and analyse them.

The global rush to access the data also caused the science ministry's servers to crash, prompting private IT firms and academics to scramble to help disseminate the data in easy-to-use formats with English translations.

"Scientists were very eager to attack this data if it could be organised," Brian McClendon, Google vice president of technology.

Google strengthened its disaster response operations after Hurricane Katrina hit the southern United States in 2005.

The IT giant offered "person finder" services in Japan to help reunite families along Japan's northern Pacific coasts which were hit by the 9.0-magnitude quake and subsequent deadly tsunami, triggering the Fukushima nuclear meltdown.

It also actively mapped areas hit by the tsunami, publishing photos of communities before and after the natural disaster.

But useful data from governments around the world in crises are difficult to collect, McClendon said.

"One of the challenges we have discovered in Katrina remains today, which is open data and being able to get it and deploy it and lay it on top of other data. It is what really makes a difference," he said.

Masaakira James Kondo, country manager for Twitter Japan, said he is now helping the Japanese government draft new guidelines for releasing information in crisis situations.

"There are not a lot of examples, where an earthquake of this scale hit a high-income nation that has Internet readily available," Kondo said.

"The government probably was the single entity that lost the public trust the most," he said.

The chaos in Japan after the triple disaster was amplified by fear of unknown health effects from the nuclear crisis, said Margareta Wahlstrom, UN special representative for disaster risk reduction.

Experts at the conference also stressed the importance of keeping a free flow of information on the Internet, even if it risked possible distribution of false information.

Meanwhile, consumers of information must also be educated to maximise the benefit of IT in disasters, said Wahlstrom of the United Nations.

"There is enormous work to do with the users -- communities, individuals, organisations, local governments -- about how to apply this data, and what to do with the knowledge actually at their fingertips today," she said

IPL auction: Ravindra Jadeja costliest buy at $2 mn; VVS goes unsold

By -mohitsexena : All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was the biggest draw for the franchises with Chennai Super Kings buying him for a whopping Rs 9.72 crore but struggling veteran VVS Laxman found no takers in the players' auction for the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League here.

The 23-year-old, whose base price was USD 100,000, went to Chennai after the tie-breaker clause was invoked when two teams -- CSK and Deccan Chargers -- bid the maximum (USD two million) for the Saurashtra player.
Both the franchises were asked to bid a secret amount in the tie-breaker and it was Chennai which managed to outbid Deccan in the final round.
But the cricketer himself will be paid USD 950,000 as per the contract he had signed with the now-disbanded Kochi Tuskers Kerala last year and even the secret amount that was bid on him by Chennai would go into the BCCI coffers.
Laxman, in contrast, expectedly remained unsold after a string of poor performances on the tours of England and Australia.
Laxman started his IPL stint as Deccan Chargers captain in 2008 but at 37 right now, age and reputation of being a Test specialist could also have been factors for the franchises' snub.
Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene, incidentally the KTK captain last season, was also a big draw going to Delhi Daredevils for USD 1.4 million (approx Rs 6.8 crore).
Jayawardene will, however, get USD 1.5 million as per his contract last year.
Some surprise beneficiaries at the auction were West Indian spinner Sunil Narine, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for USD 700,000 (Rs 3.40 crore) and Indian paceman Vinay Kumar, taken by Royal Challengers Bangalore for USD one million (Rs 4.86 crore). Narine had a modest base price of USD 50,000.
A total of 146 players went under the hammer with a purse of USD16.94 million between the eight teams after Pune Warriors did not turn up following Sahara's decision to give up on the franchise's ownership.
Each team had a maximum cap of USD two million, which Chennai exhausted by spending on Jadeja.
Other big gainers at the auction were New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum was bought for USD 900,000 by Kolkata Knight Riders. McCullum's base price was USD 400,000.
Indian stumper Parthiv Patel went for USD 650,000 to Deccan Chargers, which was quite high from his base price of SD 200,000.
Among others who went unsold in the auction were England's James Anderson, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara and Matt Prior, West Indies' Ramnaresh Sarwan, Adrian Barath and Darren Bravo and South Africa's Mark Boucher.
Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan, who was with Chennai Super Kings and Kochi in the previous editions, was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for USD 220,000 (approx. Rs 1.06 crore).
South Africa's veteran opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs, who was released by Deccan Chargers, fetched USD 50,000 (approx. Rs 24 lakh) from Mumbai Indians, while Australian batsman Brad Hodge was taken by Rajasthan Royals for USD 475,000 (approx Rs 2.3 crore).
Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson went to Mumbai Indians at his base price of USD 300,000 (approx Rs 1.4 crore). West Indies Andre Russell fetched USD 450,000 from the Delhi
Daredevils, a substantial hike from his base price of USD 50,000.
Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal was turned out to be a bargain buy for Rajasthan Royals, who bought him at his base price of USD 50,000. Jadeja was supposed to be the highlight of the auction today and so it turned out to be with almost all franchises placing their bids on the all-rounder.
Ironically, just two years ago, Jadeja was banned for a year after trying to negotiate a deal with Mumbai Indians while still on contract with Rajasthan Royals.
Dubbed the "rockstar" by Australian spin legend and Rajasthan captain-cum-coach Shane Warne, Jadeja was bought by Kochi for USD 950,000, and he did well by making 283 runs at a strike rate of 124.12, and taking eight wickets at an economy rate of 7.26.
Another big gainer in the auction was Karnataka pacer R Vinay Kumar who was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping USD one million against a base price of USD 100,000.
Pacers R P Singh and S Sreesanth, who were part of India team not so long ago, were bought by Mumbai Indians for USD 600,000 and by Rajasthan Royals for USD 400,000 respectively. Their base prices were USD 200,000 and USD 400,000.
RP Singh was bought by now defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala for USD 500,000 in the IPL auction last year while Sreesanth had fetched USD 900,000.
Off-spinner Ramesh Powar was bought by Kings XI Punjab for USD 160,000 against a base price of USD 100,000 while Australian Brad Hogg was sold to Rajasthan Royals for USD 180,000 against a base price of USD 100,000.

By Mohit Sexena-A clueless India were heading towards another humiliating series defeat with their struggling top order batsmen surrendering meekly in the third cricket Test against Australia in Perth on Saturday.

Trailing by 208 runs in the first innings, India were reeling at 88 for four in their second innings at stumps on the second day on a bouncy WACA pitch.

The visitors now face the possibility of another innings defeat as they trail by 120 runs with six second innings wickets in hand after Australia had made 369 all out in their first innings, riding on David Warner's blistering 180.

Australia, on the other hand, are on the verge of claiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a possible win of the third Test inside three days to go 3-0 up in the four match Test series.

The hosts had beaten India in the first Test in Melbourne by 122 runs and clinched the second Test in Sydney by an innings and 68 runs.

Out of form openers Gautam Gambhir (14) and Virender Sehwag (10) were once again sitting ducks to the new ball while Sachin Tendulkar (8) -- out to a debatable LBW decision, and VVS Laxman (0) followed them quickly in the hut.

Rahul Dravid (33) and Virat Kohli (21) then saw through the day and have so far put on 37 runs for the unseparated fifth wicket.

Rupee goes below 53, more dips foreseen

Mohit sexena : THE pressure on the rupee will continue as long as the stalemate in the European debt crisis lasts and the policy paralysis continues in India, according to forex experts. That the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) does not have sufficient reserves to support the rupee will add to the woes in the coming days, say bankers.

The economic slowdown, rising fiscal deficit and the widening current account deficit will continue to dent investor confidence.

Worries that the European debt crisis could exacerbate the slowdown in India will continue to put pressure on the risk-averse foreign institutional investors (FIIs). This is resulting in dollars being drained out from emerging economies like India.

On Tuesday, the rupee fell to record low of Rs 53.52 a dollar but pared some of the losses to close at Rs 53.23, down 0.7 per cent from Monday’s close of Rs 52.84.

Jamal Mecklai, chief executive officer of Mecklai Financial Services, told Financial Chronicle that the rupee was being battered by the European crisis. “We are no longer insulated from the European crisis, and unless some solution to the debt crisis emerges there seems to be no support for the rupee. The lack of reforms and inflation will continue to make investors risk averse.” He, however, did not hazard a guess on where the rupee could go.

The currency fell to Rs 52.73 on November 22, and is down nearly 17 per cent from its peak in July. In November alone, it lost 7 per cent, the worst monthly fall in over 15 years.

The volatility of the exchange rate is a reflection of the health of the economy and the confidence, or rather the lack of it, that foreign investors have in India’s growth.

K Prabhakar, senior vice-president and research head of Anand Rathi, recently told Financial Chronicle that the situation would worsen immediately.

“RBI cannot intervene since it does not have enough money to do so. The rupee is expected to fall further to Rs 56 to Rs 58 in a few months,” Prabhakar said.

Vivek Mhatre, trading head of Union Bank of India, said, “Companies which have foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs) will be impacted first, particularly if the conversion is near, as the stock markets are down and they will have to settle the dues in dollars. Even exporters and software companies that have bought forward hedges will suffer, as they could not have hedged beyond Rs 49 or Rs 50 to a dollar. The volatility in the exchange rate is the reflection of the overall state of the economy.”

Partha Bhattacharyya, group treasurer with Essar Investment said, “On account of faltering domestic economic fundamentals like widening trade deficit and slowing growth, coupled with global risk aversion triggered by euro zone debt crisis, the outlook for rupee remains bearish in the short run. The weak rupee would add to the inflationary pressures in the economy. The outlook may reverse if the risk sentiment improves globally and Indian policy makers initiate measures to spur growth, which would attract foreign capital flows into India. Fundamentally, India continues to be a good investment destination."

Exporters aren’t really cheering. Sanjay Budhia, MD, Patton group and chairman of the CII national committee on exports, said, “It’s a myth that exporters gain when Indian currency falls. A falling rupee does not necessarily mean a gain for exporters. The ground reality is that as much as 90 per cent of this gain is taken away by imports or import parity rates. Extreme volatility on any side is not good for anybody.”

Ramu Deora, president of the Federation of the Indian Export Organisation, said, “About 50 per cent of exporters who had hedged their currency are at a loss as the cost of imported raw materials has gone up significantly. Exporters are not able to book raw material contracts or make long-term commitments on exports. This has resulted in lower industrial production.”

Companies across the board will be impacted as they would have an import or export or foreign currency borrowing or a forward contract.

Auto companies, already reeling under of rising commodity costs, are specially worried. “The falling rupee is hitting the bottom line the hardest as the industry is heavily dependent on imports. Manufacturers have no option but to increase car prices and most companies have already decided to do so in January,” said P Balendran, vice-president of General Motors India. General Motors plans to raise prices of its cars by up to 2 per cent. The increase for its highest selling Beat will be Rs 15,000.

Shashank Srivastava, chief general manager of marketing of Maruti, said both the falling rupee and the yen appreciation had put a huge pressure on the company’s margins. “We have to increase prices but when and by how much is what we have to decide.”

Anna's call for Right to recall has no takers

By Mohit Sexena : Anna Hazare's new call for the Right to recall parliamentarians isn't receiving much political support. Political leaders and constitutional experts say it cannot be implemented - But is there an example in other democracies?
Having called off his 13-day long fast on Sunday, Anna Hazare is now giving a lot of food for thought to parliamentarians. He now wants to work on a Right to recall - an idea that has already been rejected by elected representatives.
What if a MP is elected with 30 percent vote, 70 percent would then jump and seek recall. It was an idea that was dismissed by JP, said Subramaniyam Swamy, President, Janata Party.
It's impractical, can't implement even at Panchayat level. People who are advocating this need to understand India first," said Vyalar Ravi.
The first successful recall took place in 1911 of Mayor of Seattle, the recall of elected representatives is already in existence in 9 states in America.
Hollywood Star Arnold Schwarzenegger was amongst the most high profile individuals to have been elected in 2003, in a special recall election to replace then Governor Gray Davis.
In India, states of Bihar, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh are some of the states that has Right to recall at the Panchayat level.
Anna also wants the government to look at the possibility of evolving a Right to reject for the voters. It implies that at the time of voting, voters should also have the option - none of the mentioned parties.
"Right to reject seems relatively more practical," said Congress leader Salman Khurshid.
"When the larger issue of electoral reforms comes in, it can be considered in the larger interest of politics," said BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.
The government would definitely try to avoid another confrontation with Anna Hazare, it would not want to be on the wrong side of any people's movement. So in case of electoral reforms, it may well take a lead and not be caught on the back foot again.

Gadgets: A look at Galaxy Tab 10.1, covers and a deal of an app

It's only taken tablets a short time to dominate the electronic market and now Samsung's website advertising the new Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 says "It's Time for a Better Tablet."
It's impossible for me to review any portable tablet these days and not compare it to an iPad, especially since I have an iPad and I've been a very dedicated Apple product user for some time.
Despite that, I must admit the Galaxy is a close second to the iPad and in some ways it's even better.
Physically, the tablets look similar side by side but the number one difference, to me, is that Galaxy is equipped with Flash, which obviously is not in the iPad.
Working everything on the Galaxy is simple: a home button gets you to the home screen where apps are lined up and ready to use on the very responsive touch screen.
Without a stopwatch or any scientific devices, I placed the Galaxy side by side with my iPad 1 on the same network and downloading apps was a lot easier on the Galaxy.
There is no competition as far as the quantity of apps available between the two devices; the Apple iTunes App Store wins easily but the Galaxy's Market Store has a great selection and is growing every day.
Using the Galaxy on a Wi-Fi network, I was very pleased with all my web browsing, email, gaming and shopping never was there an issue.
But since I have a history with Apple products I loaned the Galaxy to a few others to learn their thoughts.
First off was my 10 1/2-year-old niece, who has an addiction to her iPod iTouch and has played with my iPad at times.
Her thoughts surprised me, as she preferred the Galaxy to the iPad because she found their app store much easier to work to find free games.
She liked that after downloading games, "The Galaxy placed the shortcuts in a very easy location to find once you hit the home button."
In addition, she felt the Galaxy touch screen was much more responsive and worked faster in general.
She also added that when choosing a game to play on the iPad, "it takes a long time to load but on the Galaxy it takes a lot less time and takes you right to the game."
I also loaned the Galaxy to friends (mid-30s) who are power users, especially when it comes to gaming.
They are probably in the group of about 100 people alive who have not used an iPad, but they are iPhone users and said the Galaxy's ease of use compares to the iPhone.
Some of their other thoughts included that it had a brilliant, crystal-clear display and navigating was easy and intuitive. They didn't like the keyboard, as it seemed hard to type, causing them to make numerous typos.
They didn't download any apps but looked at what was available in the Market and found a lot of the popular apps they liked for the iPhone are available for the Galaxy.
This was a big concern to them since they are big iTunes users.
Just as I felt the presence of Flash on the Galaxy was a big advantage, they thought the same and felt Web browsing was so much easier with Flash included.

KB Covers are a nice concept since they protect Apple laptop and desktop computer keyboards but also provide instant access to shortcuts for many software applications for photography and graphic designing.
I tried the covers for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom and couldn't believe how much they helped my workflow.
After using them for just a few minutes you don't even know they are there and they do a great job of keeping dirt and dust from inside the keyboard, especially if it's a laptop.
The covers have shortcuts for the specific programs written onto the keys that are needed to press to access that specific shortcut.

I'm sure I am not the only one consumed with all the deals of the day.

Two train accidents kill 35, injure over 200

Mohit sexena : New Delhi: At least 35 people were killed and over 200 injured on Sunday when over dozen coaches of two superfast Express trains got derailed in Uttar Pradesh and Assam, raising concerns once again about the patchy safety record of Indian Railways.
Thirty-five have been confirmed dead and over 140 injured as the Howrah-Delhi-Kalka Express got derailed near Fatehpur Malwa in Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place around 12:30 pm. Approximately 1200 people were travelling on board Kalka Mail.
The train was travelling from Howrah to New Delhi and was moving at the speed of 108 Km/Hr when the driver used emergency brakes to slow it down, which led to the derailment, sources claimed.

The accident occurred when the driver of the train applied emergency brakes, said AK Jain, additional director general of the railway police.
Jain said he feared the death toll would go up, as injured passengers were being admitted in nearby hospitals.
Meanwhile, some coaches of the Guwahati-Puri Express got derailed at Nalbari district in western Assam Sunday, officials said, adding that casualties were feared. Nearly 50 people were injured in the incident.
The accident occurred near Ghograpara at around 8:30 pm as the train was on its way to Puri. Police and railway teams were rushing to the spot.
An IED blast on the railway track caused the derailment of the train.
In Uttar Pradesh, local sources confirmed that gas cutters arrived at the accident spot and that the mangled bogies were being cut open to take out the injured.
Seven bogies were badly mangled while three more bogies have capsized. The badly damaged bogies are - three AC 3 tier cars, one pantry car, five sleeper cars and two general cars.
The train driver is said to be among the injured. Reports also claim that the count of injured will rise as some bogies have not yet been cut open for the rescue efforts.
The Ministry of Railways has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those dead, Rs 1 lakh for those critically injured and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condoled the death of the victims.
The train was passing through Malwa station when its engine and 12 bogies got derailed, sources said. The injured have been taken to the Fatehpur District Hospital.
Sources say that three rescue trains including one from Allahabad and Kanpur have rushed to the spot. One relief train reached the spot. The National Disaster Relief Force said it was sending three teams from Delhi, even as the Army was being called in for medical support.
Mukul Goel, IG National Disaster Relief Force, said, Three teams of total 100 people are going to the accident spot. These teams are specialised in collapse structure rescue. We are waiting for the Indian Air Force plane."
The Commissioner of Railways Safety PK Vajpayee will conduct an enquiry into the derailment of the train.
The busy Delhi-Howrah route has been hit and many trains on the route have been cancelled or diverted. Twelve trains were cancelled and 23 trains were diverted.
On July 7, at least 31 people were killed when a train rammed into a bus driving over a level crossing which did not have a gate or an attendant, typical of several such crossings in India.
Latest government data showed that 336 people were killed and 437 injured between April 2010 and mid-January 2011.

Google doubling Google+ population

By mohit sexena : The Google+ team, facing strong demand for the new social-networking service, has expansion on its mind.

Google briefly let Google+ users invite new members last night in a plan to double the social network's population. And Google has begun detailing its plans for letting business users, not just individuals, use the service starting later this year.

Google has been limiting the individual sign-up rate, leading to frustration among many who want to get in. But Dave Besbris, the Google+ engineering director, said last night it was time for another growth spurt.

"Things are going well with the systems right now so we feel comfortable enough to open up invites for a brief period. Our goal is to double the user base in the field trial from its initial group," he said in a Google+ post.

Apparently the moment was indeed fleeting, because I couldn't find an invitation mechanism by the time I woke up here in England. That means Lutz Beyer's amusing cartoon about Google+ exclusivity remains relevant.

Google had opened invitations briefly last week, shortly after the mostly-closed beta test began. I've had success getting quite a few people in by a somewhat circuitous Google+ invitation route that involves sharing a Google+ post by e-mail with their Gmail addresses.

It's been an irregular process: some people told me they never got an invitation, and sometimes the message took days to arrive. And because Google throttles the sign-up rate, many of those I've invited had to check back several times before they happened to click when the window was open.

In a comment, Besbris apologized for the sporadic availability.

We are also ensuring, as we grow, things keep working well, so occasionally we may have to pause/slow down/speed up the signup rate to keep the service smooth and fast. The combo can make it seem unpredictable," he said. "I'm sorry [about] that and thanks for your patience.

An official invitation clearly would be a far better way to handle this than the e-mail technique. Google, though, is proceeding cautiously.

I wanted to take a moment to explain why we're growing the system slowly," Besbris said. "First, we want to make sure our infrastructure scales so the service remains fast and reliable. Second, we want to ensure that bugs are fixed while there are still a relatively few people in the field trial.

Google has made a couple tweaks--shutting down the ability to publicly share an initially private post last week, for one thing. Another change came yesterday involving profile pictures. "Changing your public profile picture or scrapbook photos will no longer generate a public post to the stream, just to the people you have in your circles. So only people in your circles will engage in discussions about the photos you post," Google+ product manager Shimrit Ben-Yair said in a Google+ post.

1.7 million Google+ users so far?
Besbris wouldn't say how many people are using Google+ right now, but it's certainly in the thousands at least. Paul Allen, founder of Ancestry.com and president of FamilyLink.com, estimated that there were 1.7 million people on Google+ on Monday, a figure based on a statistical extrapolation from the frequency of surnames. "My model uses surname distribution data from the U.S. Census Bureau and compares it to how many Google+ users there currently are with a small sampling of surnames in the U.S. and in the world," he said of his method.

Google+ is a sprawling product, too, and it's taken time for people to grasp its many mechanisms for organizing contacts, sharing posts publicly or selectively, and figuring out details such as, say, the difference between the default stream of contacts' posts (which shows posts from people in all your circles) and the "incoming" stream (which shows posts from people who put you in one of their circles). And Google+ can be used either through a sophisticated Web app or a full-featured Android app; an iOS app for Google+ has been submitted for approval.

No wonder then that newbie guides are popping up. My favorite compendium so far is one from Andrew Shotland. I also liked this flowchart showing how comments are shared with others on Google+.

Google+'s tentacles extend well beyond Google+ itself. Google Docs notifies you of updates. E-mail invitations arrive frequently with word of new followers and discussion replies. The Google home page features a link to your Google+ page. People's Google Profile pages now anchor their Google+ identities--and in a sign that Google is serious about this social networking thing, Google will delete any profiles that aren't made public by July 31. (Here's an idea: why doesn't Google send anybody in that situation an automatic Google+ invitation to try to win them over?)

It's not clear when Google will open up the invitations again, though clearly it will. When it does, Besbris advises you proceed cautiously, too.

"We continue to throttle invites, so please don't mass invite folks as it won't work," he said. "If you invite a handful of your most important friends and family you're much more likely to get these folks into our system."

Business demand, too
Google also is wrestling with business demand for Google+--something to match Facebook pages that need not be tied to a single individual.

Business accounts will be coming later this year, Google product manager Christian Oestlian said yesterday in a Google+ post. He also noted that Google will shut down existing non-individual accounts--well, most of them at least.

"Right now we're very much focused on optimizing for the consumer experience, but we have a great team of engineers building a similarly optimized business experience for Google+. We're very excited about it and we hope to roll it out later on this year," Oestlian said in a video about the option.

Several corporations have already jumped onto Google+, but it's not "optimally suited" for them, Oestlian said, and Google is shutting them down even as it plans to test what it hopes to actually launch:

The business experience we are creating should far exceed the consumer profile in terms of its usefulness to businesses. We just ask for your patience while we build it. In the meantime, we are discouraging businesses from using regular profiles to connect with Google+ users. Our policy team will actively work with profile owners to shut down non-user profiles.

Over the next few months we are going to be running a small experiment with a few marketing partners to see the effect of including brands in the Google+ experience. We'll begin this pilot with a small number of named partners.

Given that companies had already jumped aboard, it appears that at least some businesses would prefer a suboptimal experience to none at all. A measured debut is a sensible way of heading off problems before they're big, but Google also would do well to tap into the Google+ enthusiasm while it's still strong.

Not keen on running a parallel govt: Anna

A day after the 9th and last Lokpal meet, representatives of civil society spoke to the media again.
Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal all spoke out against the government's draft of the Lokpal bill which they say is not enough.

Anna categorically said that he is not interested in running a parallel government and the talk about parallel government was only a delaying tactic by the UPA.
"We are not interested in a parallel government. The nexus between the bureaucracy and the politicians is more dangerous than the Pakistan threat," said Anna Hazare.
"There is nothing for the common man in the government draft. Today, the common man doesn't have any sysytem to lodge his complain," said Kiran Bedi.

Sonia rebuffs Anna’s complaint

By mohitsexena : NEW DELHI: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi rebuffed Anna Hazare's protest letter with a six-line, 62-word reply, telling the Gandhian she had already clarified the issues raised by him while steering clear of his complaint that AICC was defaming him by calling him a front for RSS. The Congress chief also made her displeasure known about Hazare's camp making the letter public.

She wrote, "I received your letter dated June 9, 2011. Since I was not in Delhi I could not reply. In the meantime, you have also made it public. I will get information in this regard (on the issues raised). As far as the other issues raised in the letter are concerned, I have already made my views clear in my letter dated April 19, 2011."

The terse reply, coming a day before the crucial final meeting of the joint drafting committee on Lokpal bill on Monday, showed that Congress was not willing to review its hard line on the Hazare camp. The party has launched a fierce attack on Hazare and Baba Ramdev, calling them "RSS mask" and unleashing key voices on civil society. A rattled Hazare complained to Sonia in a letter on June 9.

However, Sonia's decision to steer clear with a brief reply reflects the ruling camp's displeasure with Hazare for calling the government a bunch of cheats and frauds. In contrast, in her reply on April 19, Sonia had assured Hazare of her commitment to fight corruption and assured that she did not support smear campaigns.

Civil society and the government are in a deadlock over the demand for including the PM in the Lokpal ambit. With the Hazare camp not ready to budge, the issue may not end with the Centre drafting the bill.

The Centre is likely to call an all-party meeting after the June 30 deadline of finishing the draft, to discuss the contentious issue with other parties.

The political class is chafing at Hazare's camp tarring the entire tribe with "corrupt" brush but has stayed silent lest its intervention helps Congress which is facing the brunt of the perception of promoting corruption. This, despite Congress's attempts to rally larger political opinion by dubbing rivals BJP and CPM as legitimate political forces having a "vision for the system" in opposition to civil society whose ideology was not known.

Though BJP remained tightlipped, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury's statement questioning the rationale of civil society by asking if others were uncivil, came as a relief for the isolated ruling camp.

BJP remained unmoved, making it clear that it would not give its views on Lokpal even at the all-party meeting unless Congress and the government made their stand clear. However, CPM chief Prakash Karat's demand for a copy of the draft bill before the meeting relieved government that the Left was ready to discuss the issue.

Congress leadership discussed the controversy threadbare at the meeting of the core group on Friday and Saturday, and remained firm against the inclusion of PM, higher judiciary and MPs' conduct inside Parliament in the Lokpal ambit. The five ministers on the drafting panel led by Pranab Mukherjee met on Sunday to discuss their strategy for Monday's meeting.

Union minister Kapil Sibal earlier tried to find a compromise by saying that the government could agree to the PM's prosecution after he demitted office.

The government has already said that in the absence of a consensus, two drafts could be sent to the Cabinet to make a decision on the final shape of the Lokpal bill.

Anil-Ajay action scene in 'Tezz' put on hold

Mohit sexena : Ajay Devgn and Anil Kapoor were supposed to do a man-to-man combat sequence for Priyadarshan's Tezz, but the makers have decided to shoot it later.
Shooting fight scenes are not as easy as it sounds - both the stars need to be in their best physical shape to shoot the action sequence, which, according to a source, will throw an even meaner punch than the Salman Khan-Sonu Sood fight in Dabangg.
Tezz producer Ratan Jain, who is in Europe for the film's shoooting, admits the Ajay-Anil action sequence will be shot in Mumbai.
At the moment we're shooting other really complex action sequences on trains, cars and helicopters with Ajay, Anil, Sameera Reddy and Suniel Shetty. Boman Irani and Mohanlal have completed their work and gone back," said Jain.
"Zayed Khan was here. He is gone back to Mumbai. Kangana Ranaut will be joining us soon. This is a schedule that got postponed earlier due to inclement weather. They are all action sequences. Yes, we're shooting the big Ajay-Anil action sequence on a set representing a tunnel in Mumbai," he added.
At this point of time, it isn't very clear whether Anil and Ajay will be bare-chested for the fight to the finish between the protagonist and antagonist in Tezz.

Masand: 'Shaitan' is a brave, engaging film

Hindi cinema seldom makes films about unapologetically amoral characters. The protagonists in director Bejoy Nambiar's 'Shaitan' are a group of five wayward youngsters who snort cocaine, get drunk, and drive around recklessly through the streets of Mumbai. This is a group of mostly 'poor-little-rich-kids' who're emotionally estranged from their families. When they mow down two innocent people in a rash-driving accident, they must come up with big money to close the case. Going to their parents is not an option; hence one of them, Amy (played by Kalki Koechlin), an NRI with unresolved mommy issues, suggests that her friends fake her kidnapping so they can demand ransom from her dad. Expectedly their plan spirals wildly out of control, and that's when the devil inside each of them decides to rear its ugly head.
First-time-feature director Nambiar tells his story confidently and stylishly, and uses various narrative devices like voice-overs and flashbacks-within-flashbacks to keep things from getting predictable. One of the film's most exciting sequences is a shootout and subsequent chase in a crowded chawl cut to a remixed version of the classic song 'Khoya khoya chand'.
But Nambiar punctures the narrative repeatedly with Kalki's visions of her mother, and those flashbacks serve no purpose but to justify and apologize for Kalki's eccentric personality, which in turn is a disservice to the very bravura of this film. It's hard also to connect with these characters or empathize with their condition when Nambiar seems to be putting all his effort into distracting you with his fancy technical skills.
He has more luck when he shifts his focus to the track involving the tightly wound cop (played by Rajeev Khandelwal) who remains unfalteringly committed to his job, even as his marriage is coming apart. There is a smoldering intensity to those wordless scenes in which Khandelwal watches his wife leave their home, or when he loses his patience with a bureaucratic officer in the divorce court. Khandelwal is easily this film's biggest strength, and even his tiniest moments have something to offer - like that scene in which he kicks a resistant auto-rickshaw driver into action.
The film's other key weapon is its remarkable soundtrack that is credited to as many as five composers. Nambiar uses music cleverly to maximize dramatic impact. Of the central cast, the three boys - Neil Bhoopalam as Zubin, Shiv Pandit as the rakishly charming Dash, and Gulshan Devaiya as KC - get a better shot than the girls at realizing their characters. But the film itself goes south post intermission, with giant loopholes in the plot and repetitive scenes, not to mention that cop-out climax. What could have been a terrific, thrilling film is ultimately an impressive first-time feature. Nevertheless, Nambiar makes a confident debut and delivers a brave, engaging film that shouldn't be missed.
I'm going with three out of five for director Bejoy Nambiar's 'Shaitan'. It isn't as daring as Anurag Kashyap's debut 'Paanch' whose themes it clearly mirrors, but it's got many moments that'll surprise you.

Mohit sexena : Lucknow, June 13: The alleged rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl at a police station on Friday night has triggered a firestorm of political protests against the Mayavati government.

Sonam, a watchman’s daughter, was found hanging from a tree in the compound of the Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur-Kheri district, 175km from Lucknow, on Saturday morning.

The Samajwadi Party launched an agitation this morning, and the Congress and the BJP have threatened to join in.

After the protests began, the Bahujan Samaj Party government suspended all the 11 personnel at the police station to try and control damage ahead of next year’s elections.

Sonam’s father Intezam Ali, 41, has alleged in the FIR that three policemen had raped and killed his daughter and tried to make it look like a suicide by hanging her body from a tree.

District police chief D.K. Rai would not rule out suicide and said the policemen were suspended for dereliction of duty.

He confessed himself “puzzled” and said two inquiries had been ordered, one by a magistrate and the other by the additional superintendent of police.

Samajwadi leaders have accused the police of trying to hush up the case and demanded immediate registration of a murder case against the policemen. Local party leaders, led by MLA R.A. Osmani, have staged a sit-in outside the police station’s gates and senior Samajwadi leaders from Lucknow are to join in.

A Congress team is scheduled to reach Lakhimpur tonight and the BJP too has threatened to turn the incident into a big issue.

Rai said the post-mortem had identified hanging as the cause of death. “Till the investigation concludes that it was rape and murder, we cannot start a murder case,” he said.

“How can she commit suicide in full view of the policemen who live in the compound?” asked Ali, who has named the station house officer and two sub-inspectors as key suspects.

Ali is a night-watchman at a site where a new building for the police station is coming up, circle inspector Enayetullah Khan said.

“His home is within 100 metres of the police station, separated from it by only a gate,” Khan said. “The policemen knew the family.”

Sonam’s mother Tarannum Begum, 35, said her daughter went missing on Friday evening.

“She had left home to graze cattle in a nearby field. When she failed to return till late in the night, we began looking for her. On Saturday morning, I went out in search of her again and found her hanging from a tree in the police station compound,” Tarannum said.
