<p>There is something deeply unsettling about the premise of this novel. In my review of <em>Time to Burn</em> by Ellery Lloyd, I want to focus on how the idea “perfecting” time travel from tech entrepreneur Inigo Frank only to sell tickets to the Blitz is a haunting reflection of the worst parts of human nature. It is hard not to draw a parallel to the spectators of World War II who watched mass shootings in Europe as if they were public events, even bringing their children to witness the horror.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exploring the Dark Side of Wealth in Time to Burn by Ellery Lloyd</h2>



<p>In Lloyd’s novel, the wealthy tourists of Tempus Tours treat 1941 London as a playground, proving how foolish and twisted the elite can be when they have the money to turn someone else&#8217;s tragedy into a polished enterprise for entertainment. To help market his new venture, Frank hires award-winning filmmaker Phoebe Hunt to capture the historic moment on camera. She is there to film the homecoming of a billionaire property developer and his family, providing a front-row seat to what should be the ultimate luxury experience. However, the scene Phoebe records is far from the triumphant return Frank imagined. The group emerges from the past bloodied and in shock, and it quickly becomes clear that one traveler—a woman named Sasha—has been left behind in 1941.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Personal Vendetta Across the Timeline</h2>



<p>The story takes a sharp turn when Phoebe realizes that Sasha is an impostor. Phoebe recognizes her immediately, and their shared history is filled with enough bitterness to make her presence a warning sign. The revelation that Sasha has sinister, personal motives for staying in the past shifts the book from social commentary into a<a href="https://amzn.to/3P6au3v" type="link" id="https://amzn.to/3P6au3v" rel="nofollow"> high-stakes thriller</a>. As Sasha’s actions in 1941 cause the present-day timeline to warp and shift, the danger becomes immediate for everyone close to Phoebe. It is a race against a changing timeline where the past is being used as a weapon of revenge.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">My Final Thoughts</h2>



<p>As I have noted in this review of<em> Time to Burn</em> by Ellery Lloyd, the author has delivered a propulsive, genre-bending page-turner that forces us to look at the ethics of technology and the persistent gap between the &#8220;haves&#8221; and &#8220;have-nots.&#8221; It is a chilling reminder that some parts of history should remain untouched, especially by those who only wish to use it as a backdrop for their own amusement.</p>



<p><em>Time to Burn</em> is expected to be published on August 4, 2026. If you are looking for a mystery thriller that challenges your perspective on history and wealth, this is one to add to your preorder list. <p>I’ve been spending a lot of time lately looking at the way we talk to ourselves in the mirror, especially as we see old, restrictive media trends start to creep back into our feeds this year. It feels like we are all caught in a tug-of-heart between two different philosophies, leading many of us to weigh the merits of body neutrality vs body positivity. While one tells us we must love every inch of ourselves at all times, the other offers a quieter, perhaps more sustainable path. For me, rethinking this relationship isn&#8217;t just about semantics; it’s about finding a &#8220;sane&#8221; way to live when the bar for self-love feels just a little too high to reach.</p>

This is an important thing to keep in mind.</p>

We can’t always love what we see, and honestly, that’s okay. What we can do is start paying attention to the way we talk to ourselves. When a negative thought about your body pops up, try to stop and identify it. Ask yourself: &#8220;Does this thought really make me feel good, or is it just making me feel small?&#8221; If it isn&#8217;t serving your best interests, try reframing it into something more honest that’s much more helpful than constantly punishing yourself.</p>

<p>While we often scrutinize our skincare for &#8220;clean&#8221; ingredients, the products we apply close to our eyes frequently escape the same level of caution. This is where cosmetovigilance comes in. It is the scientific study of how these everyday products affect our safety, and when it comes to the delicate surface of the eye, the findings are eye-opening.</p>

<p>To really understand why our makeup choices can be so destructive, we have to talk about the tiny &#8220;oil factories&#8221; living inside our eyelids called the meibomian glands. Every single time you blink, these glands are supposed to release a specific oily substance that coats the surface of your eye.</p>

<p>When we look at the breakdown of honesty in our society, we have to distinguish between someone who has simply practiced deception their whole life and the complex relationship between pathological lying and dementia. Both situations can look similar on the surface, but the &#8220;why&#8221; behind them tells two very different stories about the state of our social contract.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Complex Roots of Deception and the Death of Civility</h2>



<p>Following up on my recent look at <a href="https://www.beautycookskisses.com/2026/04/why-good-manners-are-the-basis-for-a-more-just-world.html" type="link" id="https://www.beautycookskisses.com/2026/04/why-good-manners-are-the-basis-for-a-more-just-world.html">why good manners are the basis for a more just world</a>, I’ve been thinking about the &#8220;flip side&#8221; of that coin. If manners are about respect and shared reality, then habitual lying is the ultimate way to disrespect the person standing in front of you. It makes one wonder if some people are simply &#8220;wired&#8221; for deception, or if they are actually losing their grip on reality as they age.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Childhood Blueprint for Dishonesty</h2>



<p>Research published in <em>Frontiers in Psychology</em> suggests that for many, this isn&#8217;t a new hobby. It often starts in childhood. <a href="https://www.iamifeel.co.uk/post/the-psychology-of-lying-how-childhood-learning-shapes-adult-behaviour" type="link" id="https://www.iamifeel.co.uk/post/the-psychology-of-lying-how-childhood-learning-shapes-adult-behaviour">When children aren&#8217;t taught how to handle their emotions or when they feel they have to &#8220;perform&#8221; to be loved, they develop lying as a coping mechanism.</a></p>



<p>Over time, that &#8220;white lie&#8221; muscle gets stronger until it becomes a lifelong reflex. It is essentially a total breakdown of internal manners. Instead of valuing the truth, these individuals put their own ego above all else. This behavior frequently carries over into their professional lives, even as they ascend into leadership roles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">When the Brain CEO Starts to Fail</h2>



<p>We must also look at the neurological side of the coin. There is also a darker, more clinical side to consider. Research on <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21512737/" type="link" id="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21512737/"><em>PubMed</em> highlights the role of the frontal lobe</a>—the brain’s &#8220;CEO&#8221; responsible for decision-making and social behavior—and how its decline can trigger these deceptive patterns. When this area is damaged or begins to decline, we see a rise in pathological lying and dementia.</p>



<p>This is where it gets tricky for us as observers. Is someone being intentionally deceptive because of a lifelong habit, or is their brain physically unable to distinguish fact from fiction anymore? In medical terms, this is often called <a href="https://www.nccdp.org/understanding-confabulation-in-dementia/#:~:text=These%20fabrications%20are%20not%20deliberate,of%20incomplete%20or%20missing%20information." type="link" id="https://www.nccdp.org/understanding-confabulation-in-dementia/#:~:text=These%20fabrications%20are%20not%20deliberate,of%20incomplete%20or%20missing%20information.">confabulation</a>. The brain is essentially making it up as it goes to fill in the blanks left by memory loss. While we feel for the individual, it is hard to ignore how this mirrors the confusion we see in larger social structures today.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Social Cost of a Fractured Reality</h2>



<p>Whether it is a lifelong habit born in childhood or a symptom of cognitive decline, the effect on a just society is the same. It creates a &#8220;gaslighting&#8221; effect where the public is forced to live in a world that doesn&#8217;t make sense. If we cannot agree on what is real, we cannot have manners, and we certainly cannot have justice.</p>



<p>True civility requires us to be &#8220;present&#8221; and honest. The social contract depends on truth. When that honesty disappears, regardless of whether the cause is a moral failing or a medical decline, the foundation of our society breaks. It leaves us with a difficult question to ponder: How do we maintain our own manners when the person in charge of the conversation is living in a different reality entirely?</p>
