Saph's Review:

Elena is a teenager forced to live with her aunt, uncle, and cousin after the deaths of her parents. She is transplanted across the ocean from Colorado to Transylvania and away from everything that is familiar. And to top it off she has one of "those" uncles....After her aunt dies, Elena's cousin Jenica confides in her about the awful things her dad has done to her over the years; things that he has hinted that he wants to do to/with Elena, things that have become more apparent since Jenica ran off in the middle of the night with a local boy. After Elena's uncle (by marriage only-he makes sure to point out) indicates that he wants to marry Elena and suggests an engagement she flees, in the middle of the night, to a castle off in the distance. Here she discovers that it's not an empty, abandoned castle, but very much inhabited by an immensely good-looking man, named Drake, who allows her to stay but disappears during the day and for most of the night.

Elena then hatches a plan to ask Drake to marry her, thus preventing her uncle from forcing her to marry him. Drake heartily agrees to this arrangement and quickly arranges everything to happen the next evening. Unfortunately for Elena, Drake has a secret, lots of them actually. First and foremost--he's a vampire. While you would think the rest of the secrets would pale in comparison to the fact that Drake's a vampire, they actually are very important and life-threatening to both Drake and Elena.

Bound By Night is a really good vampire romance novel. I enjoyed Elena and Drake's story very much. I found Elena to be extremely naive, inexperienced, and just not on an even keel with the ways of the world--all things that can be blamed on her deranged uncle. The scenes that feature Elena and her uncle are creepy, disturbing, and written as good as that story angle could be. I felt Elena's fear, disgust, and helplessness each time he came into the picture or was even mentioned. Drake is a great hero and takes wonderful care of his human, Elena. There are some parts that happen at the Fortress (the home of Drake's coven) that almost had me in tears on multiple occasions....keeping in mind that I was at work, on my lunch break, at my desk so tears weren't an option.

The main story revolves around Elena and Drake but there are other side stories entwined within the pages of what I consider to be a well written vampire/mortal romance. I found the book to be a cross between a historical romance - location, some clothing choices, speech patterns - and modern day paranormal romance. The scenes containing intimacy were tastefully written and adult language was minor. Some of the scenes seemed rushed and choppy but not bad enough to prevent me from reading through it. I enjoyed "Bound By Night" and can't wait to read "Bound By Blood."
