Catch and Release means Bigger Muskies!

Every year the number of 48″ muskies caught is larger. This is do to a higher size limit and increased voluntary release of legal size fish. Yearly in Wisconsin 96% of all muskies caught are released. Muskies very seldom reach adult size. Nearly 600,000 muskie are stocked for every muskie that survives to 18 months at a cost of about $800 per fish, according to a 1986 study. The cost drops to $70 per survivor if stocked as fall fingerlings, or $27 per survivor when stocked as spring yearlings. Muskie populations are low, even in the best waters, because muskies are the top predators and have a low reproduction rate. Good muskie lakes average 1 adult fish per 3 surface acres, compared to approximately 20 adults per 3 acres in walleye

Lake Vermilion and that Dam Lodge.

Last fall (2011) I made my first trip to Lake Vermilion one of the hottest Musky lakes around. It was a 4 day weekend trip with a stay at the famous Lake Vermilion Dam Lodge. The weather was cool and windy with little sun. As many of you know Lake Vermilion gives up big Musky every year in the close to 60" range. We were not so lucky with 2 northern (33 & 34") and one lost fish that felt real nice. But I mean but, what a beautiful lake with a million places to fish and not only for Musky but big walleye and northern too (30" walleye caught the week before we arrived).

I had a nice chat with Ed the Vermilion Dam Lodge owner that was quit interesting. As many of you know I'm a big fan of Len Hartman Musky history. Ed back in the 1980's had a chance to fish with Mr. Hartman. Len told Ed that big muskies feel like a log when first hooked in deep water because most of them have never been caught before. This fall the Vermilion Dam Lodge is hosting the Annual Larry Ramsell Muskie Outing . This is a great chance for many of as to meet and talk with the greatest muskie historian of all time Larry Ramsell. Larry has written several books on record muskies. Great prices and great fishing on a great musky lake.

Leech Lake – Home of the Muskie Rampage!

It all started on a HOT day on Leech Lake MN July 16 1955 when guide Danny Chalich and Bob Neururer and his nephews Chucky and Peter set out for a morning’s fishing. Before long, Peter was battling a 35-pound muskie. People saw muskies on the lake surface exploding on the heat-stressed tullibees. The Muskie Rampage was on. The local’s say, more than 100 muskies had been caught in Portage Bay alone in 8 days. Around July 23 a massive storm blew in and the Muskie Rampage was over.

Has this happened again? In September 1986 Don Pursch remembers fishing a 10-day period where he boated multiple big fish each day. July 1999 guide Rusty Lilyquist’s caught 14 fish between 47 and 53 inches in five days. Four being over 50 inches. In July 2002, Leech Lake muskies were at it again. Guides and anglers say that in four days, 30 legal muskies were caught by four boats in Walker Bay and the Pelican Island area alone!

Some times we just look twice and say WTF. That happened to us in 2016 on Lake of the Woods during a Musky fishing trip. This picture was taken from/of a Lowrance HDS 12 Side Scan (800kHz.). We will put the GPS coordinates below with the hope that one of our many Musky Buddy's that fish LOTW can verify this as well as to see if there is any other underwater (UFO) Art in the area. Lowrance Post-Update Fixers

We have received lots of emails and calls about data readouts and things missing (not on sonar display) after Lowrance software updates. This is only happening (?) on the touchscreen HDS and Elite Ti units. Below is fix-er-uppers for the issues we know about. Please be careful and back-up waypoints, routes and trails as needed. These fix-er-uppers are for the Lowrance touchscreen HDS and Elite Ti units ONLY.

Missing all waypoints, Readouts, etc. (make sure transducer is plugged into unit.)

Push these

Page >> Settings >>Restore Defaults. Caution: Only have top 3 boxes checked. You will lose data by checking other boxes. Turn off other units if on network. Than push OK. Unit may restart.
To Re add/add Overlay readouts: Push Power >>Edit Overlay >>Menu Than add or edit as needed. Don't forget to save.

Only have top 3 boxes checked

Missing just Temperature readout on screen. (make sure transducer is plugged in to unit.)
If only dash marks for Temperature (- - -) show in screen. No Dash marks? Page up to Missing all.

Push these

HDS Gen-3 Update BOO BOO (sonar version omitted by mistake)

Just an FYI! On the HDS Gen-3 update, the Sonar Version was omitted by mistake. This will not affect the performance of your sonar unit. It will read 0.0.0 on the About Page. Lowrance will fix this on the next Software update.

4. And that picture would go to a waypoint with depth, location, and speed with input options.
5. One would need an App to download/interface/share all this waypoint info.
6. See both Trolling motor and Transom mount transducers on one screen when trolling. (Now Can)
7. Would be nice to have an app on the fishfinder to track "time fishing or time on the Water".

A Word on Big Walleye’s in Deep Lakes

Something to think about during the off season?

Three years ago my son and I were talking to a gentlemen (at the boat ramp) from northern Wisconsin about walleye fishing. This man was telling us how he locates big fish on the bottom in 60 plus feet of water (on his sonar) then jigs for them. He then said he had caught two 15 plus pounder’s over the years using this method. When he told us his name, I remembered reading about him and one of his fish in the Lakeland newspaper.

More things to think about!!

Back in the mid 1980′s I purchased a book called Guides of the Wisconsin Northwoods by Tom Hollatz. On page 92 is an article about Al Linder who started his guiding in northern Wisconsin before moving to Minnesota. Here is a few lines from that article: “I like those rocky sunken islands about 20 feet deep down surrounded by 50 feet of water. Excellent walleye magnet.” And an eye opener: “My average walleye fishing is 40 feet and many times deeper. I wouldn’t hesitate to drop down to 65 feet.”

As most of us know the Chippewa Flowage Musky strain is one of the fastest growing. Yes it is one of the most fished body's of water in the Musky world. But! After reading the Chippewa Flowage Musky Study again this spring, the Musky size to depth relationship got me thinking. Do Musky over 45" spend most of their time in that 13 to 20 foot range? Is that why many crank baits are made to run in the 8 to 16 foot range? And yes! If you read the whole article, Musky do feed in deeper water on lakes like the Chippewa flowage. Are Huge St. Lawrence River Muskies Back?

Sept 3, 2011 - As many of us know, 16 of the heaviest Muskies ever caught came from the St Lawrence river. Yes the Hartman’s and Lawton’s did it way back in the 1940′s, 1950′s and 1960′s. But there is good news from Muskie scientist Dr. John Casselman. He says the VHS (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia) that killed off a lot of the river Muskie from 2005 to 2008 is helping the growth rate. The VHS had killed off mostly old and slow growing muskies. The remaining fish are growing at a rate of 50 inches in just 12 years. WoW! According to Dr. Casselman the minimum estimate of ultimate size for St. Lawrence river female muskies has increased to 57 inches. That is the highest in Ontario, Canada surpassing Lac Seul, Lake of the Woods and Eagle/Wabigoon. Does the St. Lawrence hold the next world record?

Update: It has been 6 years sense the VHS kill-off on the St. Lawrence river and the big fish numbers are up. 8 of the top 14 Muskies reported to Muskies Inc. in 2017 are from The Larry!

Warm Water Musky Fishing. The Issues!

With water temperatures at or near 80 degrees in part of our Musky Fishing Waters, here is a re post on warm water effect on Muskies.

Warm Water and Muskie Questions!

Here is part of a great article by Elmer Heyob on the dangers of fishing for muskie in hot water conditions.

Delayed mortality may occur from the combination of stressors a fish experiences during a catch and release fishing event along with any associated tissue damage and blood loss. Our lake conditions since the Fourth of July have become a major factor because the sustained hot weather conditions have warmed the surface waters above 80-degrees (morning temperature) and caused that temperature to reach all the way down to the thermocline. The dissolved oxygen at the thermocline depth drops below 4 ppm. This is a key point because once the coolest water available to a “cool-water” species like muskies goes above the 80-degree range or below 4-6 ppm oxygen, the fish reach a stressful situation. That’s why the odds for delayed mortality go up under these conditions. The fish are already at the point of stress before being caught. A muskie stressed by warm water or low oxygen will continue to feed to a point, making them vulnerable to angling. In fact, being cold-blooded means their metabolism is greater at higher temperatures, but eventually the stress shuts their feeding down and they start to lose body condition.

For example, both Alum Creek and Caesar’s Creek Lakes currently have conditions where the 80-degree water has reached all the way down to the 4 ppm oxygen levels at the thermocline. With continued hot weather conditions, it will only become worse. The oxygen in warm upper layer the (epilimnion) that doesn’t mix with the colder water below it with little or no oxygen (hypolimnion) will continue to reduce in depth, making the thermocline shallower and forcing the muskies into hotter water and even more stressful conditions.

At what temperature is the "Stop Fishing Musky Temp"?

Yes this is a good question so if you got comments, please do below. Our stop fishing temp for musky is 81 degrees. With that said, we also think the deepest one should fish is 16 to 20 feet down. If a Musky is caught a fast release is a must.

Is the thermocline shallower in warm water lakes?

As Elmer said above it does. In our local lakes the thermocline during hot summers is around 20 to 32 feet. This summer it appears to be about 15 to 20 feet (with surfaces temp's between 81 & 87 degrees). What does this mean? Most fish will be on the cooler side of the lake (usually the up wind side) and with the thermocline shallower in a more concentrated area. But with Musky, does this mean the bait fish are abundant and easier to feed on?

Wisconsin Motor Trolling Law - Starting July 1st, 2015

On July 1, 2015, trolling will be allowed on all inland waters with 1 hook, bait or lure per angler (and 2 hooks, baits or lures maximum per boat), Musky World - all of Vilas county: 1 line trolling per person with a max. of 2 per boat. Oneida County the same but with the 5 lakes listed below allowing 3 lines per person.
Musky anglers, this new law means we can trail live bait (sucker)behind a boat, while casting with another rod on all Wisconsin lakes (only 1 and max. 2 per boat in listed waters).
"One key goal of the proposal, sought by musky anglers, was to legalize the practice of trailing live bait behind a boat, while casting with another rod. Under current rules(before July 1, 2015), trailing a sucker or other minnow behind the boat while under power, however briefly, is considered trolling in counties that do not allow trolling.."

1. 2015-2016 Ceded Territory Walleye Size Limits. With the exception of Wisconsin-Michigan and Wisconsin-Minnesota boundary waters, all inland lakes wholly or partially within, and all river segments within the Ceded Territory have a daily bag limit of Three walleye. The total statewide daily bag limit is five walleyes. In the Ceded Territory no more than three walleye may be taken from any individual water, but you can fish other waters to fill your statewide daily bag limit. While fishing, you cannot possess fish in excess of that lake or river’s daily bag limit. Therefore, remember to remove all fish from your boat prior to fishing on a second lake or river. In any Ceded Territory water NOT listed in this pamphlet, only walleye and sauger from 15” but less than 20” may be kept, except one fish may be over 24”. More Ceded Territory info here.
2. Proposed Wisconsin statewide trolling rule. A proposed rule to allow motor trolling on all inland Wisconsin waters is unlikely to be in place for the opening of the regular fishing season on May 2, officials from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday. More info here.

Minnesota: Free fishing weekend: 6/5/15 - 6/7/15
1. Waters seasonally closed to taking fish. Spring 2015. The following waters in the portions designated are closed to the taking of all fish during the periods specified to protect fish spawning areas. Look for signs at access sites and in the areas as noted. All dates are inclusive. Click here.
2. Mille Lacs Lake Regulations. This lake has special fishing regulations that differ from statewide or border water regulations for those species identified below and take precedence. Michigan: Free fishing weekend: 6/13/15 & 6/14/15
1. Green Bay Walleye Regulations Change (Note 3, page 17 of printed guide): Expand the boundary line for the early walleye season (March 2 – Friday before the 1st Saturday in May) in the Michigan waters of Green Bay to lengthen the zone approximately six miles north of the Cedar River. 2. Due to the Natural Resources Commission’s unforeseen loss of regulatory authority, several

regulations were not determined in time for the start of the 2015-2016 angling year (April 1) and were subsequently not printed in the hard-copy version of the Michigan Fishing Guide.
