Well, we have arrived at the end of another school year, and what an exciting and busy year it has been, with exhibitions, mystery hangouts, mini-exhibitions, school productions, presentations and international school trips - whew! How did we fit all that in?

It has abeen a great year. Sadly, some of our learners are leaving us for other destinations in the world so all of us in 5G wish them "Happy trails."

As they say in Ireland,

                                  May the road rise to meet you,
                                  May the wind be always at your back,
                                  May the sun shine warm upon your face..

Safe journeys to all for the summer, have a safe and fun holiday.

Heads Up!

In our unit on Rainforests, we have been learning about how rainforests are created, which animals live there and why they are so important to the earth and humans. This is part of our UOI programme at school. Here are some images of the biomes we have created. Some have already sprouted! Now, thinking about your learning, what is a biome? Why do you think some have sprouted and others haven't? How does a Rainforest work?

Bintan Field Trip (AKA Loola!)

About two weeks back we had a trip to Bintan.

This image shows where Bin Tan Island, Indonesia is from Singapore.

Travelling there took way too long because we had to take a bus from school then a ferry to Bintan island then another bus to the Activity Center.

The resort was called "Loola". When we first arrived, we unloaded our luggage but after that, we had the most yummiest lunch ever (well I thought it was)! After the most delicious lunch we had our first activity was being eco friendly. 10 people were picked to do something (road building). I was 1 of the 10 who had to go to a house in the jungle. We had to make their backyard ready for a new sanitation system and a garden.

When we arrived, there was a huge square hole in the ground. All of us put on work gloves and started loading it up with gravel. We kept on doing this until the gravel filled the hole half way ... it took forever! By the time we finished, late in the afternoon, we had to walk back to the camp.

Finally, it was dinnertime, yahoo! Then bed time! Yay! (normally I hate sleeping). At breakfast time, I had a feeling that it would be the best day of our trip.

First off, we got to do something called Sky Walking. I was super brave, and a risk taker, but in the inside I was terrified. Mikey in Year 6, my best buddy, helped by encouraging me. When I jumped off, it felt like I was still on the platform but my body fell.

Next, was rock climbing. It was so easy but I was a bit scared at first. I got to the top in 70 seconds - a new record! I BEAT everybody else's time.

During lunch time, I sat with some of the year 6s. It was awesome and I mean, awesome because I was the only Year 5 there. After lunch, I had no clue what we were doing next until the teacher told us. It was a real surprise when we found out we were making our own rafts with barrels, big wooden sticks and rope. When we were done we had to take it into the water and try it out. Ours just broke apart when we put it in the water. It was fun building it though and I showed the PYP attitude of teamwork.

The next activity was my favorite, Boom Netting, when you jump off a BIG boat into a large net by the side of the boat. There is a second level on the boat as well (for the best canon balls!).

I was being a risk-taker because I thought it was going to hurt when jumping off the second level. Afterwards, I was SO TIRED I could barely stand. After Boom-Netting we went back to the camp for Dinner then showers then to bed. You know how I said I hate sleeping? Now, I love sleeping!

Next morning, I was up and ready for what I knew would be another fun day. At the breakfast table we were told that we were going to go Dragon Boating,Wicked! I thought. Then I heard we were also going canoeing, double wicked!

It was a great few days and I enjoyed it a lot. But I was glad to be back and see my family again.

Wow! The Netball Team Won Silver!

In 5G we are very proud of the Nexus Netball team! We have several members of the team in our class and they were showing off their silver medals today in school!

Great job girls, a completely undefeated season and lost in the last game for Gold! Fabulous effort, great enthusiasm!

Recently, we started learning how to use DoodleCast Pro on our iPads. This is a great way for us to show our learning and to help others who might not understand how to do something.

In this video, Hannah and Daisy explain how to use the formula for calculating the volume of a cuboid.

In this Pause for Thought, we'll be looking at another one of the PYP Attitudes, cooperation.

In Year 5 we are beginning our preparations for our mini-exhibition later this month. There is a lot to do and not much tme to do it in. This will be the first time many of us have done anything like this before. All of the learners have been put into groups which generally focus on their topics of interest and wth the guidance of their mentors, they will work together asa team to both seperately and together, build their understanding and extend their learning.

That's where cooperation comes in. Cooperation means, "the action or process of working together to the same end." But it also means to do something when asked. In this mini-exhibition situation, cooperation (both meanings) will be very important. Those who do it well, will learn a great deal not only about their chosen topic, but also about themselves, and their ability to do well and to take responsibility for their learning. Cooperation is a very important ability which is often key to being successful in achieving your goals.

Happy Earth Day!

Today, 5G wrote their pledges on how each of us are going to make a change in our own lives to help save the Earth and improve everyone's life. A pledge is more than simply a promise. It is something we agree to do and are committed to seeing it happen.We've placed those pledges on small green leaves which are now being put up on a tree outside the Staff room. In two weeks, we'll have a look to see how well we kept our pledges!

This week was a big week for 5G and Year 6 as TechKids began providing tech support to other learners around the school. In a nutshell, TechKids are upper primary school learners who have very good mentoring and technology skills who volunteer their time to help support and teach tech skills and coping methods for children in the same or lower year groups and, even teachers!

Pause for Thought: Enthusiasm

This week's Pause for Thought is about enthusiasm. Being enthusiastic means more than being just "rah, rah!" at a big game or competition. While it is important to cheer on your team mates, that's not the sole idea behind being enthusiastic.

As a learner, being enthusiastic means being interested in learning. It means going that extra distance to answer those nagging questions about a topic you've learned in or outside of school. Enthusiasm is infectious. It builds bridges, and results in action.

Be enthusiastic about something which makes this world better.

I chose this video because it is enthusiasm in the form of a small boy. What an effort he made and he didn't give up - and what about that cheer he gave at the end. When we are enthusiastic, we get that extra joy of a job well done.

So, thinking about your learning, what are you enthusiastic about? Why are you enthusiastic about it? What have you learned by being enthusiastic about your chosen topic?
